It now runs every 20 minutes during the day on both the 15 and 15A routes, with an hourly late evening service running on the 15A until 11.10pm. Passengers will also be able to travel into the town centre earlier in the morning, with a new 15A journey that arrives at the bus station at 6.10am. Taw Hill residents will beneﬁt from a more convenient bus service as the 15A now travels the full length of Queen Elizabeth Drive. North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson said, “I’m delighted that Thamesdown Transport has improved this vital bus service. As a Taw Hill resident myself, I know how important the 15/15A route is for many people. “Bus services have been under pressure recently and I’ve always pushed for them to be maintained,

both as the local councillor and now as MP for the area. Revealed: where some of the North Swindon developers’ cash has been spent The March Link asked where the millions paid by house developers in North Swindon to Swindon Borough Council has been spent. Originally, when planning permission to build North Swindon was granted in the 1990s, the developers agreed to contribute £17.1 million for the provision of infrastructure like transportation links, education and community facilities under what is known as Section 106 (S106) of planning legislation. However many of the projects identified in the legal agreement were very specific and as the years passed they could not be built within the timescales laid down. Originally there was to be a major contribution to the extension of Thamesdown Drive to Great Western Way, but this project is no longer in Swindon’s capital expenditure programme because the estimated £100 million cost cannot be covered without major funding input from central government. In mid-2008 the developers and the council struck a deal to change the original S106 agreement to give the council more flexibility in the way the money could be spent in different parts of the town which

would beneﬁt residents of North Swindon. To achieve this greater ﬂexibility the council and the North Swindon Development Company agreed the reduced amount of £14.375 million. So where has it been spent? To say the least the process is not transparent but an incomplete list seen by The Link shows allocations to: Highways and infrastructure: • £10.47 million on major alterations at Bruce Street Bridges and additional works on Great Western Way roundabouts towards the town centre; • £302,000 for Haydon Brook flood alleviation; • £40,000 for improvement to the embankment at Tadpole Bridge over the River Ray;

Social contributions: • £6,311 on design works for a sculpture at Junction 1 on Thamesdown Drive which was not completed because of projected overall costs; • £246,000 on changing rooms for use by community teams at Orchid Vale Primary School; • £128,000 on the Lydiard Park Visitor Centre; • £60,000 on ﬂood relief work;

Ridgeway Farm 800 homes a major threat Swindon residents called to Wiltshire meeting Wiltshire Council’s Strategic Planning Committee will debate whether Taylor Wimpey’s proposal for 800 houses north of Peatmoor and Sparcells at Ridgeway Farm should go ahead or not on 19 October. Because Ridgeway Farm is in Wiltshire the application will be heard by a committee in Chippenham, although the proposed housing will have an enormous effect on the infrastructure of West Swindon. Shaw resident Kevin Fisher is calling North and West Swindon residents to attend the meeting to show their opposition to the application. “Despite 1,000 written objections, opposition from Swindon councillors, both of the town’s MPs, as well as Wiltshire councillors representing Cricklade, Purton and Lydiard Millicent, plus residents living in those areas, we should all worry that this could go ahead. “The Ridgeway Farm proposal

Nostalgic visit for former farm children to West Swindon educational and cultural centre

In early August Phyllis Webb, 80, and younger sister Molly, 66, returned to Lower Shaw Farm, the place of their childhood, for a trip down memory lane, and to tell current residents Matt and Andrea Holland and their children about their recollections of growing up there in the 1930s and during the war. Foundry-worker turned farmer Charlie Webb, and his wife Ivy from Motcombe in Dorset, moved into the farm in 1933, with their two children Phyllis and Bobby. Seven more children were born at the farm and all had to do their bit as soon as they were old enough. Phyllis recalls helping to milk the farm’s 40 cows by hand. “We each had a three legged stool and it would take two hours in the morning; I never liked getting up on the frosty mornings but you got quite warm leaning up against the cows and squirting the milk into the bucket.

I didn’t know there were wooden floorboards. “We had to use a chemical toilet in an outhouse and at night we all had chamber pots under the bed which we would empty in the morning. The children had a bath once a week in a tin bath in front of the kitchen Rayburn, using the same water.” Molly has fond memories of the walk-in larder, which is the same as it was in her childhood, and of their Sunday jaunts in the milk cart.

“After milking I would go to school in Lydiard Millicent and afterwards I would look after the babies, then do another two hours in the milking parlour. “We were usually in bed by 8pm because we were tired out.” Looking around the farmhouse and at the staircase in the front hall, Phyllis recalled the war years. “The gas masks were kept in the cupboard under the stairs, which was our air raid shelter. It was a very small space for all 11 of us. “One day I was upstairs with scarlet fever and a German bomber flew over; my father was outside in the field and I watched him run for cover between two hay ricks. We were all quite frightened. “The room where the television is now used to be where my father would hang the pig to cure, and there used to be a huge marble slab down one wall used for cutting up the meat.” The biggest surprise for Matt, director of the Swindon Festival of Literature, was that the front parlour, now his office, was the birthplace for five of the Webb children. Phyl-

“Father would clear it out and put seats all around the side and the shire horse would take us on a ride around the area. It was lovely on a Spring or Summer day “It’s wonderful that Lower Shaw Farm lives on, it’s changed very little over the years. You get the sense of the slower pace of life we enjoyed when we were children, but it has a modern purpose which families enjoy now.” The visit of the Webb sisters came fifteen years after their mother Ivy had come to see the farm for one last time. Matt said, “I’ve retold the stories that Ivy gave me to visitors; it was terrific to have them corroborated by Phyllis and Molly. When they saw how we’re using what was their farm today, nearly half a century later, I was reminded how important continuity is for people. “Places like Lower Shaw Farm provide real and tangible links between the generations. Continuity and community go hand in hand. To feel Phyllis and Molly’s appreciation of that and their joy at seeing their home so well used by so many people was magic.”

Tregoze artists show off their studies of classic work

Children at Tregoze Primary School have applied their own interpretation to a 16th Century painting and exhibited their ideas to parents. As part of the National Gallery ‘Take One Picture’ scheme youngsters spent a week understanding the classical Greek story of King Darius just after his defeat by Alexander the Great as portrayed by Paola Veronese in his 1565 painting The Family of Darius before Alexander. Each class concentrated on different ﬁgures and animals in the work and produced their own paintings and artefacts like model animals and puppets, using a wide variety of materials, including a recycling project

Pupils join forces with Intel staff in aid of Help the Heroes Staff at Intel in Swindon are assisting Tregoze Primary School to raise money for Help the Heroes and raise awareness about the reality of war, in line with their curriculum study of World War II. Delivering good results early at Isambard

North Swindon’s secondary school has blazed a path by delivering very successful GCSE results one and two years early. In 2006 when Isambard School headteacher Rachael Mattey was meeting parents and year 6 pupils, she told them that children were a lot more capable than was realised and teachers were being appointed to deliver the curriculum to allow youngsters to enter their exams early. Four years later the school has delivered.

Excellent Ofsted for Orchid Vale

Orchid Vale Primary School in Haydon End is celebrating an outstanding Ofsted report after an inspection in July, with special commendation for the pupils’ behaviour and eagerness to learn, as well as the excellent leadership provided by headteacher Debbie Kalynka and her team.

In a letter to pupils lead inspector Joyce Cox highlighted the importance of continuing to work hard, and for the teachers to make sure they consistently communicate what the pupils are to learn, and how well they have performed in their written work. The report noted the above average number of parent questionnaires returned for the inspection, with the vast majority of respondents expressing a high level of satisfaction with their children’s progress, safety and school experience. Mrs Kalynka, pictured with children above, said teamwork is behind the Ofsted success. “Every member of staff and every parent has made an important contribution to Orchid Vale; they all hold the children’s futures close to their hearts.”

Butterflies official opening in half term Parents invited to join in with fun activities Butterflies Children’s Centre is North Swindon’s focal point for groups and activities involving parents and children from birth up to five years, and will hold its official opening at its purpose built facility attached to Abbey Meads Primary School on Friday 28 October, 2pm to 4pm. West family centre returns to its roots

The West Swindon Family Centre held a summer party in August to celebrate the return to its original name, after several years as the West Swindon Children’s Centre. The original family project started at Toothill Farm in September 1982

It’s all down to the skills of the sound engineer working after the film has been made - adding tiny sound snippets or big sweeping music to enhance and embellish what you’re viewing. And with so many films using special visual effects after the actors have done their performances against a green background, or with animation where all the sound is added afterwards, the post-production people with huge imagination and computer wizardary contributes a vast amount to the final images seen on the screen. Wootton Bassett media company Dreambase Studios has been building a strong reputation in the business, offering high quality audio post production for feature films, and TV, as well as producing films with schools, businesses and individuals. Company directors Mark Kenna and Alex Hudd have extensive post-production experience in the international film industry, having been involved in work for the likes of George Lucas and Tim Burton. Their soundproofed studio is filled with high powered computers, screens and speakers so they can match sounds to film action. In an adjacent studio they have trays filled with sand, gravel and bark to record different kind of footsteps and boxes of bits of everyday items like bottles, cans and plastic to create effects. When necessary Mark and Alex are outside capturing the sounds they need to illustrate a scene, whether it is road noise or birds twittering. Mark, who lives in Redhouse, said, “we’ve recently produced a 30 minute documentary film for Uplands School in North Swindon, and we have also been involved in a comic espionage film, Eliminate: Archie Cookson, shot and produced entirely in the West Country and starring Paul Rhys and Claire Skinner. at the Minghella FilmFestival on the Isle of Wight.” In November Mark and Alex will be adjudicating a brand new Short Film category for all age groups at the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. New holistic health centre opens

The Swindon Yoga & Massage Centre is offering a range of classes, including yoga for all ages and treatments such as massage and Reiki as well as providing space for meetings and workshops, healing and therapy sessions. In August former Greendown pupil Kayleigh Hill started a six month internship, one of two applicants offered a placement out of two hundred. She took a year out after school but decided the catering trade wasn’t for her. After a university access course at New College Kayleigh spent three years at De Montfort University in Leicester, graduating with a degree in footwear design. “Adidas is a world leader on the sports field through to fashion footwear, I was very keen to work with them,” said Kayleigh. “The call from the Adidas placement coordinator came out of the blue. I was told they usually interview applicants but they liked my final degree portfolio and asked me to join them. Melissa Butler from Westlea is following her father Norman by achieving challenges that other children would shy away from. In October 2001, when she was just six weeks old, Norman started a marathon row across the Atlantic in a two man boat called the Spirit of Swindon. Over the last two years Melissa and Norman have climbed Mount Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in the Lakes and in May this year scaled Ben Nevis in Scotland, adding a stone to the mountain tops in memory of her grandad Cyril Edmonds. Melissa has raised £140 for SMASH, the Swindon youth counselling and mentoring service from her mountain treks. Football trial for girls of excellence Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust has taken over the Wiltshire Girls Centre for Football Excellence in partnership with Swindon Council and is holding trials for girls on Saturday 1 October. Girls will have the opportunity to develop within a structured environment under the guidance of high quality STFC qualified UEFA A license and B licenced coaches. They will be able to continue to represent their local clubs as well as attending the centre. Those accepted will be asked to commit to one training session per week at the Croft Sports Centre and to play a minimum of 10 games per season against other football league clubs and centres. Storm brings gridiron back to Swindon After 15 years absence in the town, a new American Football team Swindon Storm - has been formed with the aim of entering league competition in 2012. Try-out scrimmages are taking place so that league representatives can assess whether the team can hold its own on the ﬁeld. They are also looking at the club’s ﬁnancial, management and health and safety records.

Two new gymnastic champions at Esprit

World and Commonwealth training venue Esprit Gymnastic Academy in Stratton has further boosted Swindon’s reputation as a centre of excellence in gymnastics by producing junior champions in the English and Welsh national competitions. Newly crowned English Junior Champion Stephanie Sherlock lives in Russia but splits her time between Moscow and Swindon, training alongside Esprit gymnasts and her Russian compatriots. She gained four gold medals across all her disciplines, as well as the overall title, at the English Championships in Birmingham in June. Meanwhile Welsh-born Laura Halford from Cricklade became Welsh National Champion in Cardiff for an impressive ﬁfth time, and Laura Holford and Steph Sherlock secured gold medals in hoop, ball, Dowe, Gabriela Caruso and Fleur clubs, and ribbon. Forest finished, but former landfill will have to settle down before it opens

The three year project to build the last phase of Shaw Forest Park came to an end in August, but the public will have to view it from the completed parts of the area to the west, as the fenced off phase three won’t be able accessible for at least ﬁve years.

When fully opened in 2016 to 2018, the 25 year long project will have created a 170 acre park out of a landfill site which closed in the 1970s, less than two miles from Swindon town centre. The £2.8 million project has seen contractors moving around a million tonnes of mud and top soil, raising the site by 10 metres. Some 750,000 tonnes of material was brought onto the site, about a third of it when an adjacent hill was turned into a flood storage area. Bob Fisher, site manager for Swindon Commercial Services said, “before we could bring in any covering earth the original landfill site had to be covered in a metre of impermeable Kimmeridge clay, compacted using a special machine which locked layers together to prevent contaminated water penetrating lower levels of the landfill. Rain water flows off into the reed beds built to filter it before it can be released into the River Ray. In extreme weather, water will be stored in the depression made after we removed the hill which was formed in the 1980s when Peatmoor Lagoon was excavated as a flood storage area.” He added that the first task had been to install a gas and leachate extraction system. “There are pipes buried deep into the site fed by compressed air to push out methane gas which is collected in a ring main and fed into a flare station close to the River Ray parkway which separates

the open part of Shaw Forest with the part that’s just been ﬁnished. We’re monitoring the quality of the gas. If it’s good enough in the right quantity there will be a case for installing a power plant to generate electricity for the grid.” He said that the site might contribute energy in vegetable form and start to pay back the cost of building the park. “There is potential for planting it with bio-mass grass which can be cropped, baled and transported for burning in energy plants. “In about ﬁve years, when the level of gas in the soil has been monitored, we can start planting trees and allow the public in, but the whole area has to settle down. “Shaw Forest 3 has been a really interesting project. I think it will be an asset to the people of Swindon for a long time to come.” • The public parts of Shaw Forest Park is still unknown to large numbers of Swindon people. Access by cars is off Mead Way and there are several foot and cycle entry points.

Blunsdon parish calls for residents to assist in formation of strategic plan

Blunsdon Parish Council has initiated action to develop objectives for the parish to work towards over the next five to ten years, writes parish council chair Stuart Boyd. The objectives will reflect the needs and priorities of residents and once adopted will be used to inform and influence decisions concerning our area by both the parish and borough councils. To be valid and to reflect the desires of the community the objectives must be developed by residents themselves and not by the parish council in isolation. To that end a steering committee of ten residents and two parish councillors is being formed to co-ordinate the gathering of information for the plan. We currently have four volunteers and two councillors on the group but more volunteers are needed from Redhouse, St Andrew's Ridge, Blunsdon St Andrew and Abbey Meads. With a £1 million investment over the next ten years it gives local residents the opportunity to shape and develop Toothill. Clean start for mum of three

Angharad Wheeler from Redhouse took the plunge out of corporate life at the beginning of the year to set up her own business with Domestique, a domestic and commercial cleaning franchise – and declares it to have been the best decision she could have made in terms of the flexibility to be able to spend more time with her young children aged 5, 4 and 1. “Although I am working much harder than I did in my job as a procurement manager for BT, I can chop up my day, and I’m available to pick up my children from school,” she said. Having taken voluntary redundancy she was keen to inject all her commercial experience into the new venture. “The business is growing really quickly and I have 15 or so selfemployed cleaners working with me,” said Angharad. “I love getting to know people. Once I’ve met a new customer and understood their cleaning requirements I can then place the most suitable cleaner with them. The Swindon Business Mums group, established in June 2010 provides working mums with a child-friendly place to network and get support and will meet on 14 October at Next Generation Kids in Kembrey Park, Swindon. Organiser Laura Golding said “the meetings are really informal and very useful; we bounce ideas off each other and discuss any pitfalls we’ve come across or successes. It’s a united spirit created by women trying to juggle being a mum and running a business.” Angharad Wheeler, above, proprietor of Domestique cleaning services, joined the group in March, just before establishing her company. “It’s a really positive group which helped me make the transition from full-time work in an organisation to setting up my own business,” she said. Girl Guides in Swindon are looking for women to assist groups across the town providing positive activity and life-skills learning for girls aged 5 to 14 in a safe place where they can grow in confidence, self esteem and make new friends. More volunteer leaders are needed to provide the opportunity for girls to participate.
