Britain’s biggest brood - 10 years on

In October 1999 The Link was the first media anywhere to carry the story of Sue and Ian Povey's 13th child, they have had two more children - and now also have five grandchildren. Joy Aldred went to meet Sue. Sue and Ian (now 50 and 52), from Grange Park, and their increasing number of children, were dubbed in a TV programme as ‘Britain's biggest brood.’ Following our story the Poveys made several TV appearances whilst the local and national press scrambled for their story. Over 50 people attended the Redhouse Residents’ Association meeting on 8 September at Red Oaks Primary School to discuss the possibility of increased traffic congestion as a result of proposed development north of Redhouse and Oakhurst at Tadpole Farm. “People are very concerned about the proposed link road between Tadpole Lane and Holland roundabout at the top of Addinsell Road,” said association chairman David Raymond. “The safety of children, pedestrians and cyclists is a major issue, as well as residential parking in the area. At the moment the roads are not suitable for heavy traffic, and the residents do not want to face parking restrictions.” The Tadpole Farm development area is earmarked for the construction of 2,000 homes as part of Swindon’s Core Strategy to provide a further 36,000 homes by 2026. “The residents are keen to voice their concerns about the new development and the impact it will have on them,” said David. “Everybody took away a response form from the meeting, and the association looks forward to a government inspectorate meeting in Spring 2010, subject to political elections, to express our concerns.” Swindon councillor Justin Tomlinson and Peter Heaton-Jones of Haydon Wick Parish Council attended the meeting to listen to viewpoints.

Youngsters picked for making changes

Over 1,000 pupils aged 6 to 16 years attending schools managed by Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contractors in North Swindon were given the chance to enter the John Laing Personal Achievement Awards in the last school year.

The aim of the award was for all pupils to make a difference in their lives through changes in personal, social and health education. They recorded their progress over a four month period noting their level of exercise, healthy eating or self-esteem in a personal achievement diary. Ten finalists from each of the six schools - Isambard Community School, Brimble Hill, Uplands, Orchid Vale, Moredon and Nova Hreod - were selected to attend a ceremony to be given award certificates. Two lucky winners from each

school were then chosen to receive a weekend break at Centre Parcs at Longleat with a parent. Sharon Savage, compliance manager at John Laing, said, “the children recorded their achievements in so many different ways. Some succeeded both at school and at home by being more active and cooking healthy meals for the family. They also detailed how their confidence had grown, especially when volunteering at school and trying new activities. “It was humbling to read what they wrote.”

It’s all buzzing at Oakhurst

The Link has pictured the first children at every new school in North and West Swindon since Windmill Hill opened in 1987 and we’re pleased to record the opening of Oakhurst Primary School. There’s certainly work in progress. Whilst building of the permanent 420 place school goes on apace ready for opening in September 2010, the staff are establishing a community amongst the first children and parents in temporary buildings on Pioneer Road. Forty five children started in Reception and Year 1 in September, but in a year’s time, children will be able to join in all year groups, as well as a fifty place nursery unit. “We’ve settled down so well,”

Mr Buckley comes to Abbey Meads from Chippenham, where he was head of St Paul’s Primary School for 11 years. Prior to this he was deputy head at Robert le Kyng School in Swindon, and ran the Swindon Primary Schools’ football team. Bob confesses to being very happy in Chippenham. “I only wanted to move to a school which matched my own ethos and philosophy,” he said, but admitted any feelings of reticence soon fell by the wayside. “It was a very easy decision to make. I was sure within ten minutes of being inside the school when I came for interview. The children here are fantastic and the staff are wonderfully committed.” Mr Buckley intends to continue in the footsteps of his predecessor Marilyn Brown and make sure full consideration is given to the child as a whole. “Of course test results are important,” Bob explained. “Yet there are more ‘r’s than just results - resilience and reciprocation are important qualities to bring out in children. Swindon-based creative writing tutor and memoir specialist Jill Sharp will facilitate the day in the Highworth Council offices from 10am to 4pm. Regeneration is going nowhere until this is sorted out says Trust

Since he took ownership in 2001, Matthew Singh, has made several unsuccessful planning applications to convert the institute into a commercial venture with a large hotel at the centre of his project. However the Trust resolutely argued that such permission would have contravened the Grade II* listed building status and English Heritage stepped in to remind Swindon Council’s planning committee of its responsibilities on a number of occasions. The Grade II* status puts the Mechanics’ into the top five per cent of listed buildings in the country and it was the Trust itself in the late 1980s which persuaded English Heritage to upgrade the listing in recognition of the cultural history of the building funded by railways workers in the 19th Century. Now, after years of increasing deterioration and a marked reluctance by the council to take on the owner, it has served notice on Mr Singh that it will take remedial action to stabilise the derelict structure and charge him for the work. “We have always sought to establish a positive and constructive

relationship with the council on this issue,” said Daniel. “It has never been our policy as a Trust to expect the council to fund any restoration work on the Institute, even though the council’s argument has often been that tax-payers’ money cannot be used for the building.” South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove has spoken about the Mechanics’ Institute in Parliament, and was due to meet the board of New Mechanics’ Trustees in late September. “The Mechanics’ Institute represents such an important part of Swindon’s story,” said Daniel. “The cultural activities that used to take place there are things that the town still needs today. I don’t see how we can move forward as a town until this issue is dealt with.” Coun PhilYoung, cabinet member for regeneration, said, “the council’s commitment is to make the building safe. Negotiations with the owner for the required works to be undertaken have not been successful, so we are left with little choice other than to serve the urgent works notice to put in place the necessary protection.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Wiltshire Group is calling on readers to support a number of fundraising events. Group founder Shirley Garman who died on 7 September, was instrumental in Breakthrough supporters in Swindon and Wiltshire raising over £700,000 since 1995, putting the group in the top ﬁve of 50 local Breakthrough groups in Britain. Marcus Moore is too modest to claim to be an Ironman, but the expara turned fire-fighter who works at Stratton Fire Station has been putting in some hard miles for the Fire Fighters Charity this year, writes Sam Vaughan. At July’s open day to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Swindon Fire Station, Marcus ran 30 miles on a treadmill, running the last mile in full fire-fighter kit. On 1 November he’ll be joining 30 colleagues from around the country to run the New York marathon. Marcus, who lives at Shaw Ridge, has raised £2,300 in sponsorship but wants to boost his total. Swindon Chernobyl children support to grow wider and deeper Link readers will have followed the story of Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline in Swindon since 2006 when Gin McGiffin became involved in helping poor and sick children from Belarus affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. Now Gin, from Oakhurst, explains that she is moving on to develop Chernobyl Children In Need (CCIN) in the Swindon area. Janet Garrett, owner of Janet’s Puppy Skool, has passed with credit to achieve the advanced diploma in the practical aspects of companion animal behaviour and training. The prestigious qualification of international renown is awarded by the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology. “It was something I’d wanted to do for a while but I kept putting it off,” said Janet. “I’m by no means an old dog, but it does go to show even they can learn new tricks.” The course involved a combination of residential and home study, and concluded with a case study dissertation, including video evidence. Janet’s tutor was Peter Neville, the famous animal behaviourist, well known for his big cat safaris on TV. Credit crunch or Credit Union?

Clivey Credit Union in North Swindon and Steam Ahead Credit Union, covering the south of the town have received a grant from Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation to help residents through the economic down turn. These two ‘community banks’ provide a local, safe and cheap way through the financial ups and downs of life with the opportunity to take out loans from a pool of money that belongs to everyone who puts their savings into it. Anyone who lives or works in Swindon can join one of the credit unions for just £1. Once members have saved regularly for three months, they can borrow twice the amount saved, at an interest rate of only 1 per cent per month on the reducing balance. The interest payments cover the small administrative costs of the credit union, and an annual dividend payment. “The reason our loans are so easy to repay is because we keep our costs down,” said Dorothy Brown, chair of Clivey Credit Union. “We are all volunteers and we take good care of our funds. So once a year we can divide the surplus between our members according to how much has been saved. Everyone is a winner.” With a tight, uncertain Christmas in prospect for many people across the town, the credit unions will be spending their grant on expanding their membership, publicising the benefits of credit unions and attracting new volunteers to help to run the organisations. New volunteers will receive training and support, gaining skills that they can take with them when applying for jobs or further training. “We’re hoping to make a real difference in Swindon by helping people get through the credit crunch by joining their local credit union,” said Dorothy. What a bad thing to do, you might think. But some trees grow better and last longer if they are regularly cut - and you can have fun doing it. The Peatmoor Community Woodland Group meets every month to manage Peatmoor Copse by the lagoon. The wood is a remnant of the ancient Braydon Forest which was once a royal hunting ground. To many nowadays, it’s a secret green oasis within West Swindon. Over 21 years ago, as houses were built and occupied around it, volunteers started to bring the woodland back to life by coppicing the hazel, ash, alder, hornbeam and willow. This old management technique has encouraged a wide variety of bird, mammal and insect life to return and increased the lifespan of the trees. The group meets on the ﬁrst Sunday of the month, 10am to 1pm, and newcomers who want to do something for the environment, try something practical outdoors and learn about woodland management are needed. Children are welcome but have to be accompanied by an adult. An important pedestrian and cycle route north of Shaw Forest Park has reopened, giving access from Sparcells to the River Ray Parkway. The route was closed in April so that a £700,000 drainage and reed bed system to ﬁlter contaminated rain water running off the park could be built by Swindon Council. Work is now largely complete and a new footpath running between the reed beds will provide fascinating views of bird and insect life as the new eco-system becomes established.
