Dealing with discrimination Age Concern Swindon will be raising its profile during a national week of activity, from 25 September to 2 October, focussed on how the organisation helps older people make more of life in the community, whilst highlighting the needs of the elderly across the land. The theme of the week is ageism or age discrimination and will be marked by the publication of a booklet: "Ageism exists. Haydon Wick residents living close to the Shield & Dagger pub on Thames Avenue are worried that their peace and quiet is going to be disturbed if a public entertainment licence is granted. The application to be heard in October covers seven days a week, but those living nearby feel it should be restricted to weekends. Residents are also objecting to a planning application to turn part of the car park into a garden seating area. Several remember the noise several years ago when an area fronting Thames Avenue was used for this purpose. Landlady Sharon Racken has told The Link that the only entertainment proposed is a solo singer/guitarist (with electronic backing). Futhermore entertainment is currently provided on a Saturday night and she does not plan to increase this. She clarified that the garden seating would be to the side of the building, further away from residents than before.

Bristol diocesan education director Caro Barker-Bennett agreed. "A church aided school was first planned as part of Swindon's northern expansion well over ten years ago. Propelling youngsters into performers A new theatre arts group for children is aiming for its first show in under three months. Launched in early September by Gemma Pixton and Richard Abrams, who met whilst students in the Jenny Sullivan Dance Company, the Propel Theatre Arts Academy has started Saturday classes for 6 to 18 year olds at Even Swindon Community Centre in Jennings Street, Rodbourne. Awareness of archives in October Film premiers capture living history of area which was once West Swindon The people of Rodbourne and local churches have worked with staff from the National Monuments Record Centre, Wiltshire and Swindon Records Office, as well as Swindon libraries, Steam and Swindon Council heritage team to produce two films which will add to the Rodbourne Living Story Project. Circus. which also provides the venue for monthly surgeries held by an archivist from the Wiltshire and Swindon Records Office who can guide users through the range of resources available. These visits take place on the last Thursday of each month from 10am to 12 noon.

The films, charting the changes in Rodbourne look at the original work of speculative developers and builders, the architecture and the layout of the streets and the early inhabitants, as well as the subsequent changes in shops and trade. Life and medieval times in the town Historical research by a group of 16 to 25 year olds has helped them discover what it was like to live in Swindon in times gone by. The work by residents of The Foyer supported housing in Old Town can be seen in a multi-media exhibition titled Re.'Evolutioninthe Swindon Museum in Bath Road. It features aspects of medieval life, including what people ate. the clothes they wore and what they did for entertainment. Objects on display include a model of a medieval house, replica costumes and objects from the museum's collection including pottery and musical FoyerresidentDavidMalone dressed up to try his hand at falconry instruments. Swindon plans Brunel's birthday spectacular The town's debt to the engineer who came second in the BBC Greatest Britains poll will be marked during 2006 by a range of events which will be part of a major regional celebration. Last month The Link asked what is being planned to mark the 200th anniversary of Brunel's birth. Swindon Council's arts officer Helen Miah has let us know that a range of events will be outlined at a meeting of arts and heritage organisations on 11 October. Andrew Kelly, head of Bristol's unsuccessful City of Culture 2008 bid, is consultant to Swindon's

Helen said although details will not be made public until 11 October, the events being considered will be spectacular on a scale not seen in Swindon for some time and will enable everyone to get involved. Drop into Swindon Museum & Art Gallery, Bath Road, on Saturday 16 October and draw your favourite object in the museum or one of the town's famous collection of paintings. On Saturday 23 October Swindon people are asked to visit Coate Water Country Park to draw their favourite part, and its wildlife. After all the park was voted the town's favourite place in a Civic Trust poll last year.

Capturing Swindon's image Swindon Council's Artscape is planning a first ever imaging festival which will bring together the best of traditional photographic techniques with still and moving images created with digital cameras and computers - from Thursday 4 November to Sunday 14 November. The festival will take art out into the street as well as showing work in more conventional gallery spaces. For example, a projection screen in the town centre will show work by well known photographers John Goto and John Kippin.

Events are being planned in collaboration with New College, University of Bath in Swindon, Cre8 Studios, Bishopstone School., North Swindon and West Swindon li braries, with exhibitions taking place in venues around the town. Artists using photography are invited to apply for an open exhibition in the Wyvern Theatre Lower Foyer on the theme of Regeneration. "As a parent I know how difficult it is to provide a nutritionally balanced packed lunch, so it is really important children have the opportunity to have a hot meal at school during the day. We turned to the Soil Association for advice and help in preparing a business plan which the school governors accepted. "We no longer serve chips and deep fried animal shapes. For the same price we prepare meals from raw ingredients supplied by farms near Swindon. using less fat, salt, sugar and chemical preservatives." After the first week of term. Lets Do Lunch was serving 180 children, compared with forty at the end of the last school year. Christopher Hayward, 9, said, "the food tastes much better than

schools to make children aware of the link between health and food. Policy director Peter Melchett said children will select the healthy option if given the choice. "Children actually love good food that is well-prepared. Organic food is much better for them as it doesn't contain antibiotics, chemicals, preservatives or colourings." Hoop dreams Two young basketball players from West Swindon are the only entrants from the town to have been selected to play for regional squads and are setting their hearts on playing in the USA at college level.

Chris Kelly, 16, from Grange Park, and Michael Martin, 15, from Middleleaze, players for the Swindon Sonics under 18s, were put forward for the South West England under 19s and under 17s

squads respectively. They will be training at different centres around the region before playing tournaments against other regions, as

However, help is at hand for frantic furry friends with the launch of the first ever sound therapy CD for pets. 'Crash, bang, wallop' is described as a densensitisation programme which helps pets get used to forty sound effects. Developed by animal behaviourists Dogdayz, the CD comes with a training booklet to help owners introduce their pets to loud noises and improve their reaction and behaviour. On Friday 10 September people from across the public, community and business sectors in Swindon met to discuss climate change and what we are going to do about it here in our town. The event Swindon — The Day After Tomorrow was a joint venture between Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Swindon Borough Council and Swindon Strategic Partnership and included a showing of the Hollywood blockbuster 'The Day After Tomorrow,' followed by a discussion session with a panel of climate change ex-

perts. The main aim of the event was to start developing a Climate Change Action Plan for Swindon Borough. Yet we can't leave it all up to the experts. Tackling climate change is urgent and requires everybody to be involved. Over half of all the UK's carbon dioxide emissions (the main gas contributing to climate change) come from the energy we burn to heat our houses, run our appliances and travel around. Vast amounts of this energy can easily be saved, by doing simple things like fitting low energy light bulbs and installing insulation. The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust's Switch On Swindon project is giving people personalised advice on what they can do to save energy at home. Refugees and asylum-seekers discover the delights of Lydiard

Ninety refugees and asylum-seekers living in Swindon were welcomed at a barbecue organised by the town's Roman Catholic Deanery group and The Harbour Project at Lydiard Park on 4 September.

The five member churches of the Partnership of West Swindon and the Lydiards will be looking at what it means to be 'United' in their annual joint service on Sunday 17 October,10.30am, at Oliver Tomkins Schools. Adults will meet in the junior school and there will be activities for young people and children in the infants. Members of the ecumenical team will be joined by speakers Derek Collins, the Methodist Superintendent for Swindon and Marlborough, and Mike Haslam, the Anglican Ecumenical officer who will help them explore the theme of United We Stand. Newcomers to faith as well as regular churchgoers will be welcomed. For details call the partnership office on 874221.

Helper Robert Barrett said that a dozen languages were spoken that afternoon by people with origins in Afghanistan, Eritrea, the Congo, Iran, Turkey, Kosovo, Albania, Somalia and many other places. "There was conversation about conditions in the Congo, religious persecution in Afghanistan and about the problems of dealing with the British Home Office. But there was much more talk about the glorious weather, the food being cooked - both halal and Asda's best- and about living in Swindon. "As refugees live all over the town, this was a chance to meet each other and to see the beauty of Lydiard Park. They met ordinary people from Swindon and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon in each other's company. So many refugees had good things to say about Swindon and the people who live here. In fact many of them sounded more positive than some native Swindonians I know. "Meeting refugees and asylum seekers puts all the newspaper reports and harsh headlines in perspective. It should come as no surprise that refugees and natives

Pack a Christmas parcel - for another child What could you get into a shoebox which will make Christmas special for a child you'll never meet? The Partnership of Churches in West Swindon & the Lydiards are again taking part in Operation Christmas Child which sends gifts to children in Eastern and Central Europe. Readers are asked to fill a shoebox with items which will bring surprise and joy to a child who is unlikely to have much, when most children in Britain will have more than enough. The project is run by Samaritan's Purse which last year sent

one million gifts from the UK; world-wide 6.5 million shoeboxes were distributed to hospitals, orphanages, refugee camps, homeless shelters and impoverished neighbourhoods in 100 countries, regardless of nationality, political background or religious beliefs, requiring nothing from them, their families, or communities in return.
