Schools hold back exam results
Greendown School is to recognise the bravery of 14 year old Paula Brooks fromFreshbrook who died in the summer holidays aftera long struggle with Cystic Fibrosis. School governors have agreed an endeavour award for pupils should be created to remember her tenacity and courage. Deputy headteacher Phil May said, 'Paula always tried so hard and wouldn't give in. She took part in all activities and always replied 'I'm alright.' Her memory is an example to us all." The school has made Cystic Fibrosis its charity for the year.
Secondary schools across Swindon have refused to release this year's GCSE results to the media. In the last two years the October edition of The Link magazine has published a summary of GCSE resuits supplied by Bradon Forest, Gmandown and RidgewaySchools, along with a commentary on performance written by the schools. The Swindon headteachers say that the results will be made available in league table form by the
Government and for publication in local and national newspapers in November. Parents can also find them in prospectus' published by individual schools. Screen writers show talent There were over 60 entries to a sern writing competition run by the Shaw Ridge MGM in con junction with Thamesdown Media Arts earlier in the year. Youngsters at secondary schools around the town had to come up with an original film plot which were judged by a panel of media experts. GP soon to get permanent home Another new doctor's surgery is heading for permanent premises. Work started on 14 September to build a new surgery for Dr Rod Houseman next to the Link Centre, for completion in March next year. The ÂŁ300,000 building will replace the temporary mobile surgery which the practice has been using on an adjacent site since 1990. In the last three years the patient list has grown from nothing to 2,000 people and there are plans to appoint a lady doctor once in the new building. In the long term Dr Houseman hopes to set up a 20 bed cottage
hospital on the site to provide basic nursing care in the community for people recovering from illness, and those requiring post-natal and postoperative recovery facilities near to home. Surgery staff and patients from Friends of the Link Surgery support group watched Dr Houseman try his hand at clearing the site. The Friends organisation provides a communication link between patients and the surgery and has committed itself to raising money to provide a children's corner in the new building.

A pilot scheme for a Junior Youth Club in Toothill has proved so successful over the summer that the organisers want to run it on a more permanent basis. Thirty children have turned up every Thursday evening since the beginning of July to play games, take part in activities organised for them or read books and play board games in a quiet room. However to enable the club for children aged 6 to 12 years to continue, a rota of volunteers to work with the children needs to be built Chris and Phil Court and helpers who replaced nuisance shrubs outside theirhome up. The club will meet every Thurday from 7pm to 9pm at Toothill Farm, Bodiam Drive. The volunteers will not be expected to attend every week and there will be training sessions organised so that the less experienced can pick up ideas to make the club interesting. 'We've had good fun since we started in July and the children want us to keep going; but we badly need more volunteers," said helper Caroline Bennett. For the safety of the children in

We've had a very busy month at Tootleabrook WI. First we had a visit to Book Club Associates where we were made very welcome. We were given a slide show followed by a touramund the packing, despatching and warehouse departments. Fmallywe were given a wonderful supperwith wine and fruit juice. Mrs J Lane, the speaker at our September meeting, called her talk 'Sleeping in Strange Beds' and this proved to be as entertaining and intriguing as the name suggested. She was a professional actress and toured in rep. for many years. She entertained us very expertly with stories of her life backstage, in digs, and on the road. Truly an
evening to remember. A few days later we all met at the Village Inn, Shaw for a meal and a night out together. On 1 October held a cake stall the West Swindon Centre, by Asda, where we sold our renowned produce Profits from this will go to Prospect Hospice, our charity of the year. The Link Magazine October 1993 5 Toothill Church rejoiced on Saturday 11 September at the Induction of our new Minister, the Revd. George Gibson, nearly a year since theRevd. Ian Handscomb and Revd. Anne Thomas departed. It was so good to see the church full, and to hear the sound of music and many voices singing. George himself seemed pleased to be with us and we were delighted to welcome him and his wife Tricia. We sang, clapped and almost danced. Cynthia Dowdesweli, our Chairperson, spoke of the unanimous decision of the Church Committee, the full Church Meeting and the other interested groups to invite George

to Toothill. He will also be the Free Church Minister for the whole of West Swindon, representing Baptist and Methodist denominations as well as his own, the United Reformed Church. He has come to serve not only the church members, but all the people of West Swindon who need spiritual help. The presiding Ministerat theservice was Revd. Michael Hubbard, Moderator of the South Western Province of the United Reformed Church. Also present were the leaders of the Baptist, Methodist and
Anglican churches in the area, members of the Family Church of Swindon, the Mayor of Thamesdown, George's family and friends and members of the five churches of the West Swindon Ecumenical parish. Varied music was provided by Toothill Church musicians who played organ, guitars, piano, clarinet and flute. We sang old hymns and some modern Christian songs. A good tea was provided and, as when Jesus fed the five thousand, there was still plenty of food left when we had eaten our fill. At the end of the service we sang the song that has so quickly become the favourite of many Christians: 'Shine, Jesus, shine, Fill this land with the Father's glory; Blaze, Spirit, blaze, Set our hearts on fire...' The Holy Spirit did indeed set our hearts on fire with joy and hope that day.

Well qualified playgroup staff Sheila Mitchell visited Westlea Playgroup to find out their progress in a training experiment
The autumn term at Westlea Playgroup all the staff having achieved the National Vocational Qualifications level two, with supervisor, Caroline Belson at NVQ level three. The staff at the playgroup have been involved in a pilot scheme in conjunction with Wiltshire Training and Jigsaw Nurseries who have been assessing their progress.
Swindon is one of the first areas in the country to undertake such a scheme and its success has therefore been well monitored. Much of the assessment took place at the Playgroup but other specialized sessions wereundertakenat theJigsawNursery at Windmill Business Park. There were also extensive discussions during the staff's free time
where their experience relating to various playgroup situations could be assessed. It is hoped that in the future all those involved with the care of preschool children will have achieve the NVQ standard, thus assuring parents of a standardized child care wherever they decide to send their children.

Fun day brings in crowds Shaw Village Centre was packed out with fun makers and fund misers on 4 September for the annual Shaw Village Fun Day. Micra. Setting the standard The small car buyer is really spoilt for choice nowadays - and there is hardly a dud among them says Peter Swinyard
Now established on the UK market after a year's sales is the new-shape Nissan Micra, produced in Sunderland for the European market. The old Micra made a good driving school car, with its light controls and good visibility and reliability but that was about as far as its virtues ran. It was dull to look at, dull to drive and not as cheap to run as you might imagine - insurance companies penalised it over rivals. What a change with the new model! The styling is trend-setting, with a soft, organic shape which appeals to young and old alike and themechanical components are bang up to date. Powered by a choice of 1-litre and 1.3-litre 16-valve engines, fitted of course with catalytic convertors, even the cheapest model is quite nippy about town and reasonably refined on the motorway. The 1300, with 75bhp is quite brisk, with a top speed over 100mph and a 0-60mph

acceleration time of 101 seconds. The automatic transmission option is technically interesting, being the best-yet interpretation of the continuously variable transmission pioneered by DAF in the 1960's. Remember the little 2-cylinder Daf Daffodil? Unlike the DAF, and later Volvos, the drive is by steel bands running over variable diameter cones which can alter the gears infinitely between quite low and very high. Driving the automatic is a real pleasure. There is none of the feeling of slippage of a conventional automa tic and the drive seems very positive and responsive. The pickup from rest is much more refined than that of the Ford Fiesta with a similar but less sophisticated system. So good is the automatic that sales have been much higher than anticipated - about 10% of British orders. The car is light to handle, as you would expect and there is even the option of power steering on the top of the range models. There is as much space inside as any other supermini-only the Vauxhail Corsa with similarly rounded shape is much bigger inside - and the seats and driving position are comfortable for long journeys. It is hard to think of any major criticism of the Micra. The trim materials of the low-line versions do tend to remind you of your lowly status in life and you have to go for the expensive SLX to get really nice trim but all the essentials are there in the L. I would go for the 1.3 LX automatic as the best of the range for pleasure of driving, equipment and value for money but if money were no object, I would cheerfully go for the SLX auto with all the options. Resale time will bring a steady demand for any model and residuals should be up to class normal although it is a bit early to judge just yet. The only model which should probably be avoided is the pseudo-sporting 1.3 Super S. which is mechanically identical to the ordinary 1.3 but has a much more limited appeal. Go for red or pay extra for metallic paint for the easiest resale. Other carson the shortlist? Check out the Citroen AX, Peugeot 106 and Vauxhall Corsa or wait until next year for the promising Fiat Punto - half a class upfrom the Uno.

Comeback to run 10k Debbie Tilley from Castle Dore, Freshbrook achieved a goal on 12 September when she completed a ten kilometre race, raising £90 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. A year ago she had lost four stone after a serious illness and started to attend Lee Hogan's Bodies by Design fitness class to regain strength. "I felt confident I could do the race after going to the classes but I needed building up for running," said Debbie. "Lee gave me weekly training programme and came out on runs - I couldn't have done it without his support. He's very good at setting you achievable goals."

Duke's Award call for young people The organisers of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme are looking for more young people aged 14 upwards to take part. Locally the scheme is run from Greendown School, but is available to all young people living in West Swindon, even if they attend another secondary school. The group meets on Wednesday

Officers and members of the Cotswold Division of the Girls' Brigade, including the First West Swindon company which meets at Toothill Church, visited the Bible Society in Westlea recently. They had raised the considerable sum of £3,500 over the past three years to provide Bibles to people in the WestlndiesandCaribbean. Each of the 20 companies of girls aged between 5 and 18 raised the money in various ways including having a Wishing Well and holding coffee mornings. The girls were taken on a tour of Bible House and saw how the Bibles were prepared with special presentation bookplates from the Division and packed for mailing.

GCSE Results A statement from the Headteachers of Bradon Forest, Greendown and Ridgeway Schools As a result of a decision taken by all Swindon secondary school headteachers, GCSE results will not be published this year in any form other than that required by the law. Therefore TheLink will not be printing the summary table of results from the three secondary schools serving the West Swindon area. Parents of Year 6 pupils at primary schools will receive prospectuses from Bradon Forest, Greendownand RidgewaySchools over the next few weeks which will include details of exam results. Now they are underway Eileen is launching a Spanish class in early November which will be taught using games, songs and activities. TV studies at Edinburgh Louise Wilkes from Grange Park was one of a select band able to attend a television conference for young people at the Edinburgh Festival in August. Here she describes the event On Thursday 26 August I found myself embarking on an eight hour train journey to Scotland. My destination: The Edinburgh International Television Festival. The television festival takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend, and kicks off on the Friday evening with the 'Mactaggart Memorial Lecture'. This year's guest speaker being the controversial playwright and director Dennis Potter. Running parallel with the television festival was the TVYP (Television and Young People) event, a four day course aimed at young people aged between l6 and 2l who wish to pursue a career in the television industry. Until recently the opportunity to take part in the TVYP event had been limited to people living in Scotland, but for the first time application forms were this year distributed all over the country. As a delegate on the course I therefore got to meet a huge variety of people, all from different parts of the UK. The aim of the course was to give young people the opportunity to meet with, and get practical advice from, people working in all areas of the industry. Workshops, which ran throughout the day were coordinatedby producers, editors, script writers and actors, thus givingTVYP delegates the opportunity to take part in the workshops they felt would be most beneficial to the area of work they personally wished to
go into. The most popular workshop this year was brought to TVYP by Brookside Productions, and was run by 7 key personnel from all areas behind the scenes, as well as an actor from the series. To compliment the workshops all TVYP delegates were issued with special passes, allowing them free entrance to any of the main TV festival events. This also included the opportunity to attend the festival parties in the evening, giving delegates the chance to rub shoulders with TV greats such as Paul Merton, Ester Ranson, Tracy Ullman and Michael Grade. TVYPis sponsored by various media organisations and is completely free to those who manage to obtain a place on the course. Accommodation with year was in the student halls of residence at Heriot-Watt University. Due to increased popularity next year the TVYP event is going to be open to applications from Europe also, and with only 150 places, competition is bound to be high! However, if you are thinking of applying for next year don't let this put you off, Edinburgh provides the backdrop for an opportunity of a lifetime, and one not to be missed. On two Thursday mornings in September members of the Breakaways amet for an insight into various first aid techniques, provided by a qualified first aider. In the first session there was a demonstration of how to use the recovery position and also how to give the 'kiss of life.' Everyone was encouraged to try out the procedures on a dummy and agreed it was a lot harder and more tiring than it looked.

Then think again, says Maureen Jones Access is the name of a course run by Swindon College, to enable people from all walks of life to study and acquire the necessary skills to cope with degree level work in Humanities or Science. No formal qualifications are needed. The course runs for one year full time, and two years part time. Students are required to choose four out of ten available subjects in Humanities, which include Psychology, Sociology, Politics and History. Physics, Chemistry and Biology make up the Science course, with additional classes in computing techniques. Also included in the package, is Maths and English LanguageGCSE for those who missed out at school. Graham, 29, of Liden, is an excellent example of the determination and co-operation of the students. He is profoundly deaf, and the College has enlisted the help of two students who write subject notes for him. Graham hopes to attend Bristol
University to study Psychology of the Deaf and eventually teach children with hearing problems. "We need more deaf professionals who understand the problems faced by deaf people," he states. Full time student Pat Hume, 44, of Haydon Wick, studying Humanities, said, "I have finally decided which subjects to take, but found ita very difficult choice to make as they are all very interesting." Pat, who has two school age children found the hours, 930am to 3pm fitted in very well with her family commitments. Also on the agenda, are tutor periods where students are encouraged to work together as a group. A concessionary grant from Wiltshire County Council is available to most people. This will cover the tuition fees, and if the student lives more than five miles from the College, travel expenses as well. Local work for computer experts When Paul Jameson, from Shaw, started his computer staff agency two years ago, he looked into the future and had a great deal of faith in the economy getting better - one day. After a quiet start, Paul's business Outsource UK is developing into a major supplier of computer contract staff to the large companies in the town. And because Outsource is the only business of its kind based in and dedicated to the needs of Swindon companies, Paul believes that the quality of service provided is higher than competitors based elsewhere. "The poor state of the economy has put pressure on companies to cut costs by making people redundant, but at the same time the market for temporary computer contract staff has been growing," said Paul. "With fewer permanent computer personnel, companies have to call in temporary contract workers for specific projects. Now they are gearing up for expansion they need computer staff, but don't necessarily want the long term commitment of full time employment." Setting up Outsource was a deliberate move on Paul's part. After working as a computer operator he placed contract professionals for a computer staff agency, before deciding he could provide abetter service based on local knowledge of busi-
ness needs in Swindon. Since the recession started his largercompetitors have had to respond to the changing marketby reducing in size. Inefficiencies often take place, with computer experts living inSwindon taking up contracts in London and other cities, and contractors living miles away travelling into the town. "We took a low key approach in promoting Outsource in order to concentrate on developing personal contact with companies and contract staff; they won't know about us unless we have already been in contact with them," said Paul. "The Link magazine is in fact our first major exposure. Demand is growing and we need to increase the range of skills and abilities amongst the contract staff we can place. With so many different computer systems in use with a wide range of software, I believe there's enough contract work for computer professionals locally. There's no need to travel out of town." Darren has been running discos for several years as well as building up a sound systems and lighting hire business. He has a lot of equipment not being put to good use, and he has being turning disco bookings away. "This is the chance for somebody keen to get into disco entertainement without a big financial outlay for equipment," said Darren. "I'm sure there are young people who would like to get involved in entertainment, or older people who wished they had, but didn't want to risk money on setting themselves up. "All they need is half decent record collection, and possibly some transport - the equipment will be provided. With CD compilations a music collection can be built up quickly and at moderate cost." 'People want rave music at some parties, but at weddings or anniversaries there will be aunts, uncles and grans who want golden oldies. You have to look at

Towards the end of the summer holidays, my twindaughters Angela and Lisa and a friend Jayne went to Coopers Chemist at the West Swindon Centre to buy some items of make-up. As they were testing some out they were told to stop messing around and leave the shop quickly. They wereupsetbecausethey hadn't bought the make-up they had gone in to buy. They did leave, but attempted to try again later, and exactly the same thing happened, although theydid manage tobuy some
of the items they wanted. On their return to Jayne's home, they expressed their upset and disappointment to Jayne's mum, Mrs Curtis, who promptly got on the phone to the chemist. The pharmacist answered and Mrs Curtis had the telephone put down on her. Mrs Curtis was livid, so we both went to Cooper's to talk to her in person. She was extremely rude and unhelpful, refused to give her name or the name of her superiors. Has anybody else had the same or similar experiences?

The noisy Wiltshire Festival From Mrs S White, Yarmouth Close, Toothill
Whilst many people enjoyed thelatenight concerts at the Wiltshire Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend, there were many others, residents of West Swindon, who were not so appreciative. I wonder whether the organisers or Thamesdown Council, who allowed the concerts to be staged in Lydiard Park, spared a thought for those of us trying to get some sleep? We live a mile away from the park, but the noise was so loud that we were kept awake, and on Sunday night until 11.40pm. The Environmental Health Department seemed unwilling or unable to en-
force the agreed 10.30pm finish. We fully support the idea of developinga cultural event of this kind and we enjoyed what we saw of the Festival during the day. However it is quite unacceptable to hold loud open-air concerts in the evening so close to to one of the town's largest residential areas. Concerts should be sited well away from homes or in an existing enclosed facility like the Link Centre. Complaints should be addressed to The Manager, Arts and Recreation Department, Thamesdown Borough Council, Euclid Street, Swindon and to your local councillor.

Enjoying the British way Swindon has become home for a large number of Japanese families connected with the Japanese companies established in the area. The Link magazine met the Kizawas who live in Nine Elms and discovered what they think of living in Britain When asked if she would like to move from Japan and live in Britain with her husband for a few years, Mrs Satoko Kizawa readily agreed to the idea. Her husband Tatsuya had come to Swindon several times since Honda was first established in the town six years ago. Satoko had always wanted to travel so it was quite easy to make a decision to come here. Satoko and Tatsuya and their four month old baby Tatsuhide are part of the growing community of Japanese families living in and around Swindon who are associated with the Honda car factory or other Japanese companies which have set up in the area.
British are reserved and wait to get to know somebody new, especially if there is a language and cultural barrier. She started to get to meet other women at antenatal class when she was expecting Tatsuhide. She admits to being quite worried about giving birth in England as she did not know much about the medical system, or about babies. Luckily Tatsuhide decided to arrive early, on the day Saeko Shaw was visiting and she was able to accompany her to PMH and help her through the birth. Needless to say Tatsuya was with Satoko to encourage her. To help her cope with her new baby Sa toko's mother in law spent a month with the family when she came home from hospital.
"Britain is safe country and she did not think the culture shock would be too great" With the help of Saeko Shaw who assists Japanese families settle in Swindon, Satoko explained that although the family is a long way from home, and the cultural difference between British and Japanese lifestyles are huge, Britain is an attractive country to move to as there is an affinity between its people. She felt that Britain would be a safe country and she did not think the culture shock would be too great. AllJapanese study English at school and get to know a little about Britain, though Satoko quickly discovered her school English had little practical use. The Kizawa's come from commuter suburb of Tokyo and lived in a new apartment block. They had a small flat, so the four bedroom detached house they moved to in Nine Elms seemed huge and luxurious. In Japan it's very unusual for Japanese families living near big cities to live in a house with garden. Apart from their honeymoon in Hawaii, Tatsuya and Satoko had not visited another country. Being able to see Europe was another reason to leave family and friends. The cost of visiting Europe from Japan is prohibitive and they would probably have to come in a tour party. Satoko prefers to visit places when there are no otherJapanese around. BeforeTatsuhide arrived, they visited Paris and Majorca and most Sundays they visit tourist attraction where Tatsuya enjoys sampling different beers incountry pubs. He also enjoys his spare time by swimming and taking saunas in a sports club. He does not have much time to relax during the week as he leaves for work before 7am and often does not return until 9pm. The family watchJapanese programmes on cableTV, but to watch Japanese videos they have to have a separate TV and video play back as their tapes do not work on European standard machines. Satoko thought she would be saying 'hello' when picking up the phone, but was surprised that most people who call her are Japanese. There are about 40 Honda families in the area and another 20 connected with other Japanese companies. She also expected to be go to lots of parties and meet English people. But she found the

Satoko's English teacher, landlady and neighbours were all looking forward to seeing the baby and she received many cards which she says made the precious experience of having Tatsuhide even better. Satoko really appreciated their kindness.

When the family return to Japan Tatsuhide will be old enough for school which is renowned for the pressure placed on youngsters. Satoko likes to see the children running around the playground at nearby Brook Field School when she passes. She feels the demands of the Japanese system are too great and regards the British teaching methods as humane. Her son will have to take an entrance test to gain a place in a good nursery school. Japanese children attending school here acquire an excellent grasp of English and writing, reading and grammar skills, but they have to work hard to catch up when they return home. They already get a lot of homework from the Japanese school they attend in London on Saturdays.
Satoko makes some fascinating observations of British life. She's surprised by how many parents drive their children to school. At home they are expected to walk. She's also impressed by the number of people in wheelchairs and their helpers she sees around the supermarket. Social pressures in Japan forces people with disabilities to stay out of the public eye. Their shopping is usually done over the telephone and it is delivered to them. The Kizawas can get most things they need locally but a mobile shop brings them Japanese foods like dried and raw fish, soya bean products and dried seaweed to make sushi. Sakoto admits she has not tried any English recipes. But she has taken to driving in England. She rarely drives on the narrow, crowded, often chaotic roads at home where drivers have to keep an eye out for children and cyclists. She finds it much easier to drive here, though she had never seen a roundabout before. Satoko also noticed the absence of advertising hoardings lining every road. This was a problem when she first arrived because without the landmark of a huge advertisement she had to concentrate hard so that she would not get lost driving home. She is impressed by the planning system here. The buildings are well designed and in keeping with their environment. The views from houses are pleasant and nobody hangs their washing out in the front. The Kizawa family feel that coming to Britain has been a good move and they are making the most of the time they will be here.
