Nova Hreod school time capsule commemorates pandemic By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Nova Hreod staff and students have placed a time capsule in memory of those lost to covid. Tutor reps, house captains and student heads gathered with staff at the school's reflection garden. The event was organised by Assistant Principal Simon Foster. Nick Wells, Headteacher at Nova Hreod, said: "This is a marker of not only the challenges the students have faced, but also what the school has gained. "This is a real sense of who we are at Nova. People will look back on this and understand what we went through together. I'm immensely proud of the children pulling together over the last 18 months and this is a special day to commemorate those lost to covid 19."

Logan Jones and Blaise Killingback lowered the capsule into place. A commemorative plaque immortalises the students' names and the date of the burial. The school hopes to host an unearthing ceremony in 2070. Former head of year students Sophie Buckett and Hanna Warner returned to the school to witness the event. Sophie

said: "It's been a really lovely ceremony and this capsule demonstrates the struggles we have been through in the past year. "It's been hard for everyone and this shows how we have persevered through it, like many other schools have." Hanna added: "It's quite a privilege to come back for this. As year 11s, we've already left and haven't been able to

be included in other things. Being able to see the capsule burial and inform everyone else about how beautiful it was, will be really nice." The capsule contains student art work, written personal records of covid 19 experiences (some in physical form, and some on a USB stick), house ties from the school, a timetable, photos of the students involved, hand sanitiser and a home testing kit. Mayor of Swindon Garry Perkins attended the event along with governors, Kevin Logan and Helen Thorne. Cllr Perkins said: "This is great. This is a school that the students are obviously very proud of. "It's good that the students are taking an interest in their social and personal history and how the pandemic has affected their families and their neighbours as well as other pupils."

This year especially, we are all a bit mindful of our children's education after the toing and froing of the last 18 months as far as their schooling was concerned. to behave so I don't know how they are able to get a whole classroom to sit up and listen. They do a fine job as they mould the minds of our offspring. I think the best I ever managed to do with my child during lockdown was learn how to play Roblox, but I think that was more her teaching me than the other way around. incorporate exercise into your family's daily routine? Beat the Street is returning to Swindon on 15 September for six weeks. The challenge encourages people of all ages to incorporate more physical activity into their daily lives by transforming Swindon into a giant interactive game. Players can take part individually or as part of a team and are encouraged to walk, cycle, run, wheel or scoot as far as possible within the local area, with prizes for the teams that clock up the highest numbers of miles. Not only does Beat the Street encourage people to live a healthier lifestyle, it also helps to improve air quality, congestion and pollution, by encouraging people to ditch their cars and find more sustainable ways to get around.

The future of green transport in Swindon Bus users could benefit from new zero emission buses as Swindon Council enters the next phase of the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme. Electric buses would help to improve local air quality, reduce noise pollution and lower carbon emissions. The council now progresses to the next stage of the selection process, working closely with Swindon's Bus Company, Stagecoach West and the Department for Transport to co-develop a business case. This bid builds on the actions set out in the council’s Net Zero Emissions Action Plan, launched this summer. As part of the Net Zero Emissions Action Plan, the

council is currently out to consultation on two plans to set in motion the future of green transport in Swindon. The Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Strategy looks at different options to increase the number of electric vehicle charging points in Swindon, and The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan proposes improvements to cycling and walking routes across Swindon over the next 10 years. People are being encouraged to read the plans and share their thoughts on the council’s website. The deadline for feedback on both consultations is 27 September. E-Motion: Keeping you fit, the air clean, and the wheels turning The founders of Swindon-based E-Motion Electric Vehicle Co recognised the benefits of electric cycling back in 2009, and were one of the first specialist e-bike retailers in the UK. Partner Mark Butler said: “At the time we were one of very few shops nationwide that stocked e-bikes, and far fewer people knew about the benefits of electric vehicles than today. E-bike technology was in its infancy – steel bike frames were necessary to carry the lead acid batteries, making early electric bikes rather heavy – and the batteries took a long time to charge too. Now things are quite different, lithium batteries are light-weight and charge within hours.” At E-Motion here’s more choice for cyclists: commuter, folding, mountain and hybrid bikes, tourers, shoppers and tricycles are all available as electricpowered bikes. Since the first lockdown more people have discovered a love of cycling. A quarter of people surveyed by Mintel

said they were first-time cyclists, or had started cycling again since 2020. The benefits of cycling, and of simply being outdoors, on our health and wellbeing are clear. Equally important is the positive impact on the environment. In June the executive director of UK’s Bicycle Association said: “It’s brilliant that the UK has been out buying and repairing their bikes under lockdown. E-bikes have the potential to make even longer or more hilly cycling commutes practical and enjoyable.” E-Motion regularly hold e-cycling events for the public and at local businesses to demonstrate the benefits of electric cycling for leisure and commuting. Mark added: “We also promote the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme which can subsidise the cost of a bike by 40% and, through the Cycle Association, we can finance your purchase too. “A number of our early customers love the solid, early e-bikes they bought from us and we help keep them on the road.

We’re members of the Association of Cycle Traders and always try to find the right part to keep a bike running smoothly.” E-Motion recently opened its new, purpose-built and fully-equipped bike repair workshop. VIPs gather to mark new Zurich office building reaching highest point By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Swindon-based insurance giant Zurich has celebrated the 'topping out' of its new Unity Place office building in the town centre. North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson and senior figures from Swindon Borough Council, Zurich and construction firm Skanska were among the VIPs given a tour of the building, which is still under construction but has reached its maximum height. Mr Tomlinson said: "I'm very proud to be here today to help celebrate this significant landmark, because we have had unprecedented challenging times over the last 18 months to two years, and today signifies a real huge vote of confidence in the Swindon economy. "Yet more regeneration funding is secured that will deliver this wonderful building

and future job opportunities. "As a town we've had many, many challenges over the years, and each and every time we come out stronger." He added: "Zurich's investment is a massive show of confidence in the local economy, once again proving that Swindon is an economnic powerhouse, whilst also reflecting the wider community's focus on sustainability and wellbeing." Energy for the new building will be supplied by renewable

sources. It will be free of single use plastic and also aim to be paperless, with no printing or filing and all post digitalised. Electric car charging will also be installed for visitors along with extra facilities for cyclists, to encourage more sustainable means of getting to and from work. Working with the community is a key focus for the project and Zurich has contacted local schools to create artwork for the hoardings around the site. A competition to produce art

for the interior of the building will be held at a later date. Cllr David Renard, leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “Zurich’s new state-of-the-art office building has been a positive beacon on Swindon’s skyline for many months now and it is absolutely fantastic to see it taking shape as it marks the start of £100m of investment in our town centre. “It will not only maintain one of our top employers in Swindon, but help transform our town centre, increasing land values and encouraging additional investment to improve our town centre even further." John Keppel, Zurich UK Chief Operating Officer said: “Today is a momentous date for us as we edge closer to completing Unity Place. As one of the county’s largest employers, we look forward to building on our strong links and partnerships with organisations in Swindon and beyond."

End of Swindon Honda production also the end of a 35-year era By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk An era dating back to the 1980s ended when the last Honda car rolled from the South Marston production line. The plant officially ceased production on 30 July, and the company has thanked workers for their contributions and pledged to leave a lasting positive legacy in the local community. In 2019, Honda Motor Company announced a restructuring of its global automobile manufacturing operations, which included the cessation of production at the UK plant, at the end of the current model production lifecycle of the Civic Hatchback. In March this year, Honda announced it had entered into a contract for sale of its Swindon site. Originally purchased by the Japanese car manufacturer in 1985, the 6

site has been sold to Panattoni, Europe’s largest developer of new build industrial and logistics facilities. Jason Smith, Director at Honda of the UK Manufacturing, said on the final day: “Today is a sad day as we bring production operations to a close, but I’m confident our associates share my pride in everything we have achieved during our time in Swindon.

"I am incredibly moved by the dignity and pride displayed by our associates throughout the last two years. I’d like to thank them all for their continued hard work and dedication in what has been an incredibly emotional time for us all.” Since Honda announced its intention to leave Swindon, the Honda and Supply Chain Coordinating Steering Group, led by Swindon Borough

Council, has been overseeing additional support for Honda workers and those working in the company's wider supply chain. Honda says it hopes to redevelop a section not included in the main site sale to create a 1.3-acre heritage garden. The garden, intended to provide past employees and local communities with a green space to visit, will include two Honda memorial trees, which are currently located on the main site, to remember associates who passed away during service. Ahead of the end of production, Honda donated STEM learning kits and a number of pre-production vehicles to local schools and colleges. The intention, it said, was to help inspire future generations of engineers in a bid to maintain Swindon’s engineering heritage.

More than 10,000 through gates make Pride a resounding triumph By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk The organisers of Swindon & Wiltshire Pride have thanked everybody who made it a success. The Town Gardens were transformed into a sea of colour to celebrate the return of the Swindon LGBTQ+ event. Headliners East 17 and Veronica Green from Drag Race UK wowed the crowd, with Nationwide Building Society returning as the main sponsor. Over 10 thousand people attended this year’s festival throughout the day, and organisers say the event was a big success. Chair Jo Sharpe said: “It was such a special feeling to be back in the park again, and to show off the exciting plans we’ve been working on for so long. "We had to make a few changes to keep everyone as

safe as possible, but I want to thank all the volunteers who remain vital to the event’s success, our fantastic sponsors, and everyone who has helped us to make the event a triumph.” New additions this year included a Family Circus Zone, a Wellness Tent and the introduction of British Sign

Language interpreters. Jo said: “We have worked hard to ensure the event continues to be accessible for all, and this year we were delighted to be able to work with Performance Interpreting to enable sign language users to come together and enjoy the magic of Pride with family and friends.”

Mayor of Swindon Cllr Garry Perkins and Consort Mrs Abnet Perkins were among the visitors to the Swindon Croquet Club Open Day. The club organised the open day to show not just how enjoyable the sport is but also how accessible to people of all ages and levels of mobility. Cllr Perkins said: "Even though I knew the croquet club had been here for many years, I didn't know how long it had been involved with the community and how much support it gives to disabled people and other groups within the community." He told club members: "I congratulate you all for the work you do on behalf of the people of Swindon, because it really is tremendous. "It has been great fun this morning, but looking at your cups and medals it's obvious

Workers with disabilities and other challenges face redundancy from a leading Swindon supported employer. Twelve of those workers have learned their jobs are under threat. The borough council-backed Enterprise Works in Gypsy Lane helps people, many of whom have learning or other disabilities, to acquire workplace skills. The organisation is best known for making and selling fences, gates and other wooden items. Its supporters include North Swindon MP and Minister for Disabled People, Work and Health Justin Tomlinson. It has been confirmed that a dozen of those who work there face redundancy. A parent of one of those affected contacted Swindon Link, saying: "...Enterprise Works in Gypsy Lane, who employ disabled people, sent out letters to twelve employees who are the staffing of two

He said the organisation had been running at an increasing loss, and that the decision to explore the possibility of redundancies was a result of this. Swindon man is armwrestling champion Thames Water technician Mindaugas Dulskas has been crowned British Super Heavyweight Arm-Wrestling Champion. Swindon man Mr Dulskas, 40, received his title after beating the European champion to retain the national title he first won last year. He says his strength helps him with his work as he can easily lift manhole covers with one arm instead of two, and once even managed to lift a fallen tree blocking a road.

Choir has launched a recruitment drive Swindon-based Wessex Male Choir has begun a quest for new members. Its new recruitment drive is leading up to an open evening on 14 September at Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club. Choir leaders say the last 18 months have been tough for members used to meeting in person, but contact has been maintained through Zoom meetings and outdoor in-person rehearsals began earlier this summer. Beat the Street makes return to Swindon This year's Swindon Beat the Street will run from Wednesday, 15 September to Wednesday, 27 October. The game is free and open to all ages, with players given special fobs to use at Beat Boxes as they walk, wheel, run, cycle or travel in any other way under their own steam to other Beat Boxes. Pookey the lost cat back home thanks to microchip By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A cat lover was reunited with her missing pet five weeks after he disappeared. Teacher Joanne Dawson, from Blunsdon, near Swindon, feared the worst when 10-year-old cat Pookey suddenly vanished without a trace for more than a month. That was until she received a surprise call from Dorcan Way veterinary clinic Eastcott Vets, telling her Pookey had been identified via his microchip. Joanne said: “It was a lovely moment and, incredibly, it came exactly five weeks to the day after he had first disappeared. “I couldn’t believe it. Pookey had been away for so long that I honestly didn’t think I would ever see him again. “In fact, when I saw it was Eastcott Vets calling I thought they were ringing to tell me Pookey had been found dead. “Instead, they were calling to

say he’d been found wandering around five miles away and identified him as ours through his microchip.” Pookey's disappearance is a mystery but there is no mystery about how he was found and returned to his rightful owner. Anna Church, from Liden, had spotted the forlorn feline wandering aimlessly around the area and quickly realised something was wrong.

She said: “I thought he must be a lost cat and posted a message on the Swindon community website and someone suggested I take him to the vets to see if he was microchipped. Eastcott Vets is just around the corner, so I took him in and luckily he had been chipped so they quickly contacted Joanne and had soon reunited them."

Vital work closes major Swindon roundabout

Major work to reconstruct the foundation of White Hart roundabout started in midAugust. It is scheduled to take a total of 12 weeks, meaning reopening is due in November. According to Swindon Borough Council, the work will increase the life expectancy of the road. Most of the roundabout is fully closed, including the Merlin Way slip road from the A419. Residents are still able to follow the A419 southbound to the A420 eastbound, and the A420 westbound to the A419 southbound which has ensured access to St Margaret’s Retail Park, Sainsbury’s and the Truck Stop is maintained. Access has also been maintained for emergency services. A council spokesperson said: "The road was originally built in the 1970s and has reached the end of its life. The impact of increasing traffic levels and

modern HGVs over that period of time has left the roundabout foundation in poor condition, resulting in increasing numbers of potholes and wider surface defects. "By digging out the foundation, approximately one metre deep, and replacing it, the council will create a new base for the roundabout. "The new, stronger carriageway construction will be 45 per cent thicker than the

previous construction and will be made from new materials. "Had this work not started, there was a high probability that widespread failure of the existing road foundation would have occurred in the short term." Asked why the need for the work had not come to light before, the spokesperson said: "Pre-design surveys indicated that the road structure may have been repairable and had a further period of use. "Detailed structural surveys could only be undertaken at construction stage due to disruption to traffic, these detailed surveys indicated that the road structure was in worse condition than previously considered and had reached the end of its service life. "The project scope was then altered to include full depth roundabout reconstruction instead of the previously anticipated shallower repairs and resurfacing."

Almost business as usual at Studley Grange Studley Grange's new soft play facility has moved into its new purpose-built building, has been extended and had air conditioning and a fresh air system installed. In January a new restaurant was added, and this month Dexter cattle are joining the collection at Butterfly World and Farm Park. The latest project was the installation of 104 solar panels. This third installation will eventually feed a battery system allowing more electricity to be stored on site and be used to supply the various business entities. Royal Wootton Bassett arts festival given green light The annual RWB Arts Festival is a competition for children and adults. It covers music, speech, drama, musical theatre and dance and is affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals. The Speech, Drama and Musical Theatre sections will take place on 20 and 21 November with Music and Dance the following weekend. The closing date for entries is 30 September. There is a children's poetry competition with prizes including gold, silver and bronze medals. Winners will also have their poems published on the website and in the festival programme. Weekend to explore proud Swindon heritage Historic Swindon sites will welcome people free of charge over the weekend of 11 and 12 September. Heritage Open Days is a national event billed as England's largest festival of history and culture. It brings together over 2,000 local people and organisations and thousands of volunteers. A spokesperson said: "Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free. "There will be guided tours, open museums, historic food demonstrations, expert talks, musical recitals and bellringing, exhibitions of historic photos and artworks, activities for children, cream teas and other refreshments." Turning to Swindon's events, the spokesperson said: "Much of the activity will be

based in the Railway Village, where you will be able to immerse yourself in the social and communal aspects of life for GWR workers and their families by visiting the Carriage Works, the Health Hydro, the Railway Village Museum, the Central Community Centre (formerly GWR Hospital), the Baker’s, the Gluepot pub, St Mark’s Church

and the Pattern Church." Other sites taking part are St Mary’s Church and the Walled Garden at Lydiard, the Richard Jefferies Museum, the Friends Meeting House in Eastcott and Prospect Place in Old Town. Harbour Project teams up with Art on Tour Swindon Museum and Art Gallery has joined forces with the Harbour Project for an online exhibition celebrating diversity. 'The Beauty of Diversity' includes pieces from Swindon’s art collection, selected by members of the Women’s Group of the Harbour Project, which looks after refugees and asylum seekers in the town. The collaboration is part of the Art on Tour Project, which aims to share more of Swindon’s art with more people and places in the town. Over four sessions, members of the group discovered and explored artworks from Swindon’s collection of modern British art, and in the final session, curated an exhibition of works which resonated with them. Katie Ackrill, Art on Tour’s Engagement Officer, said: “We’re so excited to have been able to work with the

Women’s Group from the Harbour Project. It gave us the opportunity to hear totally different and fresh perspectives on well-loved pieces of art from the Swindon Collection. “We have been able to bring a new dimension to our online engagement work, and sow the seeds of a fruitful relationship with The Harbour Project.” Sophie Peart, of The Harbour Project, said: “Our sessions and workshop with Katie have enabled our women’s group to connect to Swindon through artwork. We have been able to see pieces depicting Swindon and also from the town’s artists. “This project has started a conversation which I hope we can continue.” The final exhibition reflects the varied perspectives of the participants. There are local artworks showing urban and

natural spaces, as well as pieces by nationally significant artists Lucian Freud, Desmond Morris and Eileen Cooper. The exhibition title was selected by a member of the Harbour Project in response to the eclectic cross-section of artworks selected, and the diversity of experiences within the group. Grant helps people build a beach Charlie the donkey pays a call By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Young people from Pinehurst have worked together to create a beach for the whole community to enjoy. They were able to tackle the project thanks to a Wiltshire Community Foundation grant. The Pinehurst Initiative Forum was awarded a £4,700 grant last year from the foundation to hold a summer fun day, but it had to be postponed because of the pandemic. Rev Simon Halls of Shine Pinehurst, the church that works with dozens of young people on the estate, said the young people came up with the idea of creating their own beach for the summer instead of the fun day and part of the grant was used to pay for it. He added: “They did the whole thing themselves, they planned out how big it was going to be, sourced the sand and got quotes from

suppliers and asked Central Swindon North Parish Council for permission to put it in The Circle on the estate. “It’s been really hard for families this year, particularly with covid and everyone staying in the UK. Prices have gone up massively which means many families have been priced out of getting a holiday this year. That’s why it is so important to have things like this.” Wiltshire Community Foundation joint chief executive Fiona Oliver said: “It is fantastic that our funding has helped empower these young people to organise this for the whole community."

Residents of a Swindon care home had a special visitor in the form of Charlie the donkey. Kelly Baker from Kelly’s Donkeys was delighted to introduce one of her therapy donkeys to residents of White Lodge. She said: "Charlie is incredible, donkeys have a natural calm temperament, and the therapy donkeys are specially selected and trained. The donkeys are trained to work inside, manoeuvring around wheelchairs, using stairs and lifts as well as standing

quietly when around the residents." Charlie was guided into one of the lounges at White Lodge as well as visiting individual residents in their rooms. White Lodge also has weekly visits from Pets As Therapy dog Archie, and recently had a therapy horse visit the grounds. Ramona Gherendi, General Manager at White Lodge said: “Therapy animals play such an important role at White Lodge, we thank the owners so much for giving up their time to visit care homes."

Historic Lydiard church reopens after extensive conservation work St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park celebrated its reopening with a family fun day. The historic church, part of what is generally regarded as Swindon's most beautiful and historic park, is open for public visits and prayers, and information about opening times can be found at www. stmaryslydiardtregoze.org.uk/ visit/ The church's conservation project was undertaken by Wells-based company Holy Well Glass. The firm's team professionally cleaned the church's 15th century stained glass window and revealed the face of the child Christ, which was thought to have been lost. St Mary's encourages the general public to come and view the stained glass window and learn about the discoveries made during the conservation project. A spokesperson for the church said: "The stained glass

was known to be comissioned from York in 1420 and has now been attributed to John Thornton of Coventry, who was a leading 15th century stained

glass glazier. "His major work was the great East window in York Minster." The church itself dates back

even further, having been a place of worship for local people for over a thousand years, and having been extensively remodelled. swindonlink.com n

Swindon Borough Council congratulates GCSE students Words by Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Swindon students’ GCSE results have won the praise of Swindon Borough Council. More than 2,000 pupils in schools across Swindon have received their results this week. Provisional results show that 73% of Swindon pupils attained a Grade 4 or above and 50% attained a Grade 5 or above in both English and Maths GCSEs. Under the grading system, which has been gradually phased in since 2017, GCSEs are ranked on a 9-1 scale, where 9 is the top grade and a Grade 4 is a pass, roughly in line with the former Grade C. This year, results have been awarded on centre assessed grades provided by schools as exams were cancelled due to the pandemic. Schools followed strict grading criteria and submitted

results in June. The results reflect the centre assessed grades after Exam Board validation. Cllr Tim Swinyard, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Levelling Up, Communities and Place, said: “This has been an extremely difficult year for pupils taking all exams in our education settings in Swindon. Aldi to hire 128 staff with salaries up to £61k

Swindon's Aldi stores have launched a recruitment drive. Along with branches in Chippenham and Salisbury, they aim to find Wiltshire workers between now and Christmas. The UK’s fifth-largest supermarket chain is looking for people of all levels of experience to fill roles at its stores and distribution centres across the region, with salaries of up to £61,400. This includes apprenticeships and part-time positions such as Store Management Apprentice and Warehouse Cleaner, all the way up to Store Manager. The recruitment push forms part of Aldi’s nationwide expansion drive in recent years, with the supermarket currently looking to fill thousands of roles across the UK before the end of the year. Kelly Stokes, Recruitment Director at Aldi UK, said: “As we continue to grow, we’re

development we are talking about. The cumulative added value (Gross Value Added) of goods and services to the local area is predicted to be £1.4bn over the next 10 years. Panattoni’s vision is to see the site transformed into a world-class logistics and modern manufacturing centre. The Honda factory would be demolished to make way for a number of employment uses, including light industrial, storage and distribution and general industrial and manufacturing uses. Making the site carbon neutral will be a key part of the plans as is providing sustainable travel links and connectivity. There are plans to improve and maximise landscaping and biodiversity on the site too. Within the proposals there will be a large number of electric vehicle charging points

on site and a new electric bike or scooter hire scheme for employees. The scheme will make electric cars, bikes or scooters available to employees who have used sustainable means to get to work. Last month Swindon marked the end of an era when the production line at Honda’s South Marston factory came to a halt for the final time. Honda has been a fantastic employer in Swindon for 30 years and the Japanese carmaker has touched the lives of so many people in our town. Even if you haven’t been directly involved in the production at Honda, I’m sure you know of someone who has. But after saying goodbye to Honda our thoughts have very quickly turned to the future and I’m very pleased that the new owners of the site, Panattoni, have wasted no time in sharing their vision for what will replace the car giant. I have met several times with representatives of Panattoni because, as a council, we need to make sure we get

the very best outcome for the site so that a range of job opportunities are created for local people. At my last meeting with Panattoni, which I attended with my Cabinet colleagues Councillor Gary Sumner and Councillor Tim Swinyard, I was very pleased to hear about the huge economic boost the redevelopment of the site will bring. Panattoni had previously announced its intention to invest £700m into Swindon, but the estimated 16,000 jobs that will be created - 9,000 of which are expected to be taken by Swindon residents, is a real coup for our town. And, as a I mentioned earlier, there will be a diverse mix of job opportunities for local people. When you add on the additional 860 construction jobs that will be created over the next decade you begin to get an idea of the scale of

The Swindon Shuffle returns on 9 September for its 15th year. Live in venues again following on from last year’s virtual event, it promises to be the biggest Shuffle in years. The very best of original local musical talent will perform across five venues in Old Town, and a supporting line up of DJ’s, poets and other artists will be part of the Shuffle Fringe. Hosting the main musical programme will be The Victoria, The Beehive, The Castle, The Hop and The Tuppenny, with fringe events at Baristocats and Baila Coffee & Vinyl. As always, the musical pickings are rich and varied, with this year featuring the first ever electronica stage (Saturday, 11 September at The Hop) hosted by Sonic Kitchen. Headliners include indie-pop band Stay Lunar, rock ‘n’ rollers Richard Davies & The Dissidents, folk trio The Lost Trades and art-punks SexJazz. Also topping the bill across the weekend are former Noah & The Whale man Matt Owens, indie band Talk in Code, rock band Circu5, Buswell & Nyberg in whatever guise they fall into on the night and Will Lawton & The Alchemists whose lyrical, piano-driven folky drum 'n' bass is always a massive crowd pleaser. Of course, this is the tip of the musical iceberg, with over 60 acts performing across the four days, ensuring there is something for everyone. The event launches on Wednesday, 8 September with the now traditional music quiz at The Beehive, which this year has been renamed the Flicky Harrison stage in honour of the former Adver entertainment journalist and stalwart of the local music scene, who sadly passed away earlier this year. This year's event will be raising funds for Prospect Hospice in tribute to former 12Bar and Victoria landlord David Young, who was cared for by the inspirational teams at Prospect during the last months of his brave fight against cancer. Dave was a key figure in the Shuffle for many years as host, sound engineer and benefactor. Coppa Clifton Village easing people back into relaxed dining By Barrie Hudson I was invited to come to Coppa Clifton Village, one of Bristol's newest restaurants, and sample its menu. It would have been rude to refuse. How was it? Well, after accepting such an invitation - as opposed to turning up anonymously - I always ask myself (a) would I go back on my own, open my wallet and hand over money for more of the same and (b) more importantly, would I recommend others to try the place for themselves? In the case of Coppa Clifton Village, a firm 'yes' is the answer to both questions. The bright but cosy decor of the place, which nestles in Clifton's Regent Street as though it's been there for years, helps it to pull off the tricky feat of not looking like a chain premises even though it is part of a chain - albeit an upmarket one.

The laid-back atmosphere and friendly, efficient staff were reassuring to diners still relearning what it is to relax in a restaurant after the last 18 months or so. The menu is suitable for people wanting anything from a light snack and a well-made cocktail to a complete pull-outthe-stops dinner. For starters we chose what turned out to be perfect

parmezan croquets and zucchini fritti, followed by an equally excellent smoked haddock and salmon fish cake and a specialitity hot sourdough pizza. Dessert came in the form of sticky toffee pudding with crushed honeycomb and other delights and some of the best pecan pie I have ever tried. An interview with Steve Harley

Steve's track 'Make me Smile' holds an especially dear place in my heart as I have fond memories of singing along and dancing around to it in the kitchen with my father. My palpable anticipation for this interview only increased after listening to Harley's new album 'Uncovered'. Steve conducted the phone conversation from outside a rehearsal room within a complex in Hertfordshire. As his band members all live in different parts of the South East, this was equidistant for all. The sunny morning weather reflected the artist's disposition as he was now able to rehearse and play with the Cockney Rebel outfit once again post-lockdown. What can your audience expect for the gig this September in Swindon? "We will be playing most of the newest album 'Uncovered' from 2020 as we lost 60 concerts that year, that had to be rescheduled. I'm really proud of the album and this acoustic tour will be promoting it. The album deserves it - it was only released three weeks before lockdown! Martin Simpson is just a legendary guitar player, he's so special and Barry Wickens who is here in rehearsals with me now. Working with people of that quality - it wasn't hard to make a pretty decent album. We also play a long show. Everyone who knows me, knows that we tend to play two sets at around an hour and a quarter long, with an interval. I've been going like this now for 47 or 48 years and I think the people that come to my shows now know me pretty well. My audience tend not to know what to expect beacuse it's never the same twice!" What has your experience of being an artist and performer during a pandemic been like? "The last year and a quarter has been very odd. I'm used to travelling, moving and staying in hotels. I've been travelling for about four decades and then the door suddenly slams on you, you know? It's been weird for me to be at home so much. When you reach a certain age and you're still touring and 26

performing, you've survived you know? If you're in your 60s and beyond, and are still going with it, it's because it's in your soul - it's in your blood. I was at dinner last night with the Cockney Rebel band and this subject came up. It was nice to have the same feelings confirmed by the other members. They echoed the feelings that it was great to be back in rehearsals and playing together." 'Uncovered' has some fantastic interpretations of other artists' songs. Bowie's 'Absolute Beginners' stood out for me and I loved what you did with it. Could you tell me a bit about the process of choosing and recording these tracks? "When you're a songwriter looking to do covers - or as you rightly said, interpretations of other artists' tracks, the criteria is 'do I wish I'd written that?' The nine songs I've done interpretations of are all tracks I've been playing and singing at home for years. I didn't really know Bowie's 'Absolute Beginners' very well until I did some guest performances with Mike Garson who has now turned into a good friend of mine. It's a special song and there was something about it that grabbed me. My engineer asked me how I wanted the album to come out. I said the songs have to be played and performed by me, like I was the one who wrote

them. My goal was for people who listened to the album to say 'I love that new song of Steve's.' I like the freedom of interpretation a lot - obviously I'm not claiming the songs by these other artists. The point was to make the album personal and to put my heart and soul into it. I think we have scored a goal there - I think we have managed that." You collaborated with Eddi Reader on the album and I was wondering if there are any artists out there in the ether that are still on your 'bucket list' to work with? "I'm not really like that. I've always been a bit on the outside of the music industry, a bit on the periphery. I've never really felt a big part of it. It's only when I walk on stage that I'm a pop star. Off-stage I feel more like a geography teacher! I don't mix in the industry much. Maybe I should really? In regards to Eddi and 'The Star of Belle Isle' - well Eddi is gifted. She is the lovliest person. When you reach a certain stage in this business and you're there with the longevity behind you like she has, you can gel and blend immediately. It can give artists something in common. She's a Scottish-roots singer, that's her background and I'm a London boy. We don't have anything in common except we're both musicians. I went up to Lincolnshire to see her perform. When I

went backstage, she came running up to me with huge friendly hugs and said the first record she ever bought was the Cockney Rebel album 'Psychomodo.' That was amazing to me. I told her about my plans to make the new album 'Uncovered', and that I had this traditional folk song 'The Star of Belle Isle' from Newfoundland, Canada. I'd found two missing verses from the end that no one else had ever recorded. The part she sings during the duet is the female part that others don't record. It was lovely and meant the world to me." You are widely considered an incredibly charismatic live performer and I was wondering why you think your audience say this about you? "I've seen this said about me and I don't really understand it - I'm just me! In the wings, I could be going out to the Royal Albert Hall or playing an intimate little gig and I'm still there just doing my crossword or reading the racing pages before I step out. I don't feel tension or nerves or anything. I think it's because we rehearse well and because when I walk out there - I won't know what's going to happen. I don't plan anything except the music and I love that life so much. Not off-stage as I said before, but when the light hits me, somehow I'm in the right place at the right time."

Skoda Yeti: A car that is definitely not abominable One of the best cars that has been around in the last 10 years has been the Skoda Yeti. It was practical, stylish and the favourite of motoring experts. Even Jeremy Clarkson got a helicopter to land on its roof! Sadly Skoda had to keep up with the times and the Yeti was replaced a couple of years ago by the Karoq, a superb piece of equipment, and having driven it for 750 miles up and down the country I couldn’t find a single fault. Speedy, comfortable and attractive. There are ten different models with prices ranging from £21,000 to £28,000. There are petrol and diesel engines, you can choose between front and four-wheel drive and there are six trims with either a manual gearbox or the

seven speed automatic box. There are five engines which are either diesel or petrol, giving you between 36mpg through to 60mpg and there is a two year warranty. The Skoda Karoq’s entry-level is the 1.0 TSI 110 petrol engine while the more powerful 1.5 TSI 150 petrol is regarded as the pick of the range with 148bhp and 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. At the top of the range is the 2.0 TSI 190 petrol, which gets four-wheel drive as standard and is available only in Sportline trim with

0-62mph in seven seconds. There are two 2.0-litre diesels with either 114bhp (2.0 TDI 116) and 148bhp (2.0 TDI 150) with the 150 being just about as fast as the petrol model and that’s the car I had for my marathon trip – the Sportline model. The Skoda Karoq’s entry-level SE trim comes with an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system as standard, plus clear graphics and a simple operating system. There is no sat nav but there is the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring,

Permission granted for new homes in South Marston and Rowborough

Swindon Borough Council has granted planning permission for 2,380 new homes at South Marston and Rowborough. The homes will be part of the new Eastern Villages Development (NEV). The council says the outline planning application, which was submitted by Hallam Strategic Land, Hannick Homes and Taylor Wimpey, will ensure the delivery of a range of new homes, community facilities, green space, allotments, walking and cycling improvements, as well as a new primary school. The site is north of the A420, and the next stage of the process will be the approval of detailed applications and design codes.
