to train him so when I open a book he’ll come and sit on my lap so that ultimately when the children are reading, he will go and sit with them. "There’s been a lot of surveys on how children will read so differently when a dog’s present, because they feel like they’re reading to the dog – especially our younger children. "They can feel quite intimidated sometimes when they read one-to-one with an adult, whereas when the dog’s there they’ll happily sit and read to them. It really builds up their confidence." Red Oaks sent out a letter to notify parents and carers about the new student as they are aware some students, and teachers, are not all doglovers. The school have made it optional to interact with Dash. Miss Stratford said: "Some of our Year 5 and 6 children said they were a bit anxious because I think they’ve had experiences with dogs that are negative. But it’s an important development because when you go out
into the community there are dogs everywhere, so it’s about teaching them how to read a dog’s body language. "They’re also asking lots of responsible questions about what he needs; what he eats and things like that. "The benefits have already been fantastic - even though he’s not doing any of his ‘official’ work. I’m really excited to see what more he brings. We’re even looking into getting him a little coat with a Red Oaks logo. The children really feel that he’s a part of the school and that he is their dog. "I know a lot of schools that are looking into getting them, and I would definitely recommend it. Dash is absolutely amazing." Although Dash's primary role will be as a therapy dog for students Miss Stratford says he's been a big hit with teachers and parents alike. "We spoke to a few members of staff who were a bit apprehensive about it and they all said, ‘If it will benefit the children, then it’s important’. So, that’s the conclusion that we came to. "It’s also a really good conversation starter that can bond us with new parents who we don’t know that well, so it just gets them to come to the school and have a chat." Like all students Dash will have a timetable. His will include reading lessons, pastoral sessions and muchneeded break times.

Swindon one of 100 towns set for slice of £3.6bn Towns Fund By Ben Fitzgerald ben@swindonlink.com
Swindon is one of 100 towns set to benefit from a share of the £3.6 billion Towns Fund. Up to £25m is being made available to fund regeneration schemes which it is hoped will boost the local economy. The announcement has been welcomed by South Swindon MP Robert Buckland who said: “This is excellent news after campaigning to get our town on the list. "Swindon is set to benefit from the new Towns Fund - with up to £25m now available for local projects. I am looking forward to working with the borough on the exciting projects this can support.”
Communities, businesses and local leaders will be asked to draw up plans for how the money can be used to transform their town’s economic growth prospects with a focus on improved transport, broadband connectivity, skills and culture. Announcing the new funding, Local Government Secretary, Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, said: “Ensuring that prosperity and
opportunities are available to everyone in this country, not just those in London or our biggest cities, is at the heart of the mission of this government. “We want to level-up our great towns, raising living standards and ensuring they can thrive with transformative investment in transport, technology, skills and culture. "I will now work with local people from the
100 communities to agree proposals to invest up to £25 million in each place. "I hope these deals will provide the investment and the impetus for long-term renewal ensuring each town can look to the future with a new optimism." The announcement follows the confirmation in July of an additional £1.325 billion for the Towns Fund, taking the total to £3.6 billion. The Town Deals Fund builds on government plans to decentralise funding and decisions away from Whitehall and invest in the growth of local economies, providing more than £9 billion of funding to Local Enterprise Partnerships and introducing eight Metro Mayors in England.
PC Paul Bezzant on the challenges of town centre policing
Swindon Link caught up with PC Paul Bezzant at the pop-up policing community hub in the Brunel Centre to discuss the challenges of policing Swindon Town Centre. He explained: "This is the second time that we have set up a pop up shop - we first set up here in the Brunel Centre in December last year which proved very popular. "We have been in place for three weeks now and the pop up shop has provided an opportunity for the public to interact with a broad cross section of Wiltshire Police and the organisations that support us. We’ve had representatives from The Bobby Van Trust, The Dog section, regular police officers and Police Community Support Officers - it’s about building trust and giving the chance for members of the public to meet us. It’s been great to have a lot of youngsters coming in here to chat to us and to understand that we are friendly and approachable. "It’s been a good opportunity 4

to inform members of the public about some of the latest crime trends, such as cyber crime, especially the older demographic. "When we talk to people, they say that they are concerned about certain aspects of crime or say that it’s got out of control, but much of that is all about people’s perceptions. "Being able to address some of these concerns is important. We find that we have to reassure the general public that Swindon is a safe place to live. "There are a lot of reports in the news about knife crime,
and obviously these sorts of violent crime are concerning and a lot of preventative work is being done in this area. However, for most people out there, such violent crimes are still very rare. "You are much less likely to be a victim of this sort of crime if you are not exposing yourself to a certain lifestyle." PC Bezzant explained that policing Swindon town centre presents its own set of challenges that are met through a highly effective team work approach. “With Swindon town centre, there is a pattern of issues that we are called upon to deal
with - low level nuisance, street drinking and retail crime - the same as you would see in many similar towns across the country. As to why these crimes are happening, it comes down to often quite complex social issues. such as drug and alcohol dependency. We work closely with partner agencies to address the driving forces behind these offences. It’s a team effort. He explained that the town centre policing team is supported by CCTV operators as well as the staff from inSwindon Bid who are able to act as their eyes and ears. This means that the identity of repeat offenders can be rapidly shared among the town centre businesses who work together to prevent low level criminal activity. This teamwork approach is further strengthened with a series of bi-monthly meetings where PC Bezzant is able to meet with representatives from town centre businesses and management to discuss trends and steer future approaches.

Asking the experts about homelessness, and how you can help By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
Swindon Link talks to Michael Keenan, Threshold Housing Link's Chief Development Officer. When was Threshold Housing Link founded? The charity commenced work in Swindon in 1972, initially established as The Swindon Cyrenians (AGAPE) by a group of locals, who rallied together, to provide soup to those found sleeping rough on the streets. In the 47 years since that time there have been name changes and a raft of projects, large and small, but the central aims, in essence, remain the same: to alleviate the suffering of the homeless and to end homelessness in Swindon. Can you tell me when and why you joined Threshold? I joined Threshold in June 2017. My interest in the homeless sector stemmed, in part, from a research trip years earlier to rehabilitate and integrate communities in continental Europe. I was interested in implementing organisational approaches that actually worked to tackle and resolve problems associated with entrenched homelessness and addictions. What types of services do Threshold provide? Our organisational objectives are clear, we seek to prevent homelessness, to alleviate its associated social exclusion, actively assist recovery from its effects with those clients working with us and to influence Local Authority policy that affects the homeless. What has been Swindon’s biggest hurdle to help

alleviate homelessness? It appears to have been a long time since the Local Authority updated or indeed seriously revised key strategies related to homelessness and yet a coherent and relevant strategy that brings all stakeholders together can provide a good foundation on which successful outcomes can be built. In the past year, at least, colleagues at the council have been attending to rewriting the local Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and also the Rough Sleeper Reduction Strategy, which is in an advanced stage of development. I have not seen the draft strategy yet, but I expect to do so shortly. Another local issue is the lack of suitable single person accommodation in Swindon. Threshold, like other local organisations, are looking to remedy this through our own efforts and thus far we have had good support from the council in advancing our plans. What impact has Threshold had? After nearly half a century since our inception, it is still the case that if you are a rough sleeper in Swindon you are most likely to encounter Threshold staff in your first engagement with professional, caring, services. In terms of the average number of individuals who contact and engage with our service year on year, requiring assistance to prevent or alleviate homelessness, then this number over recent years has been in excess of 700 persons annually. What keeps you working at Threshold? I do have clear goals I wish to achieve at Threshold.

Secondly, and importantly, I wish to fully implement a culture change not just within Threshold but broadly within the sector locally. To that end you will find me consistently promoting the need for services to become psychologically informed, in a meaningful, committed way. Thirdly, a red-thread throughout my career has been my commitment to social justice and the third sector and my present role allows me to continue to contribute to making a difference to the lives of, often, very vulnerable individuals. Primarily it is these elements of my work that keeps me motivated throughout the long hours that I work. What initiatives is Threshold currently working on? Numerous initiatives, mostly connected to the implementation of a structural and cultural transition to a PIE (Psychologically Informed
Environment), the expansion of our property portfolio, and the transformation of our outreach service to meet the needs of individuals with mental health challenges and substance misuse issues (dual diagnosis) that alternative forms of outreach will not effectively address. We are also working hard to form alliances with some major UK homeless organisations, beyond those we already work with, to benefit from further best practice sharing initiatives and the extensive resources of larger organisations, to help Threshold better serve the local needs in Swindon. In terms of a winter specific event, then every year we host ‘Threshold’s BIG Swindon’s SLEEPOUT’, which is the towns original and largest ‘solidarity with the homeless’ sleep out event. Mum sweeps into action after toddler picks up glass in local play park By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
After she found her 23-monthold daughter with glass in her mouth, a mum from West Swindon has placed a dustpan and brush at her local play park in a bid to prevent a child from being seriously hurt. In less than a year Michelle Hughes, 33, from Middleleaze, has had two "terrifying" experiences at Middleleaze Park after she discovered her daughter, Isabella, had picked up glass. In one incident her toddler had picked up a piece of glass and put it in her mouth. The mum-of-one said glass is the last thing she expected to find in a child's play park. Mrs Hughes said: "Last year we were at the park and she was playing - I then realised she had picked up some brown glass. She normally picks up bark and puts it in her mouth so, at first, I thought it was bark. "It then happened again.
I turned my back because her bike had fallen over, so I picked the bike up and turned around and noticed there was something in her mouth. I then realised it was a piece of glass. "It was quite terrifying thinking about the idea that she had it in her mouth and then what if she had fallen over and swallowed it. You do try your best, but I literally turned around because her bike had fallen down in the wind. It happens in that split instant when you’re not looking. She’s so fast and so into everything - I was just very lucky to catch her that quickly. "I can’t understand the mentality of people having glass bottles in a kids' park." Shortly after the second incident Mrs Hughes took a dustpan and brush to the play park and attached it to the railings with a note which reads: "Please use the dust pan and brush to clear up glass. We can't stop people doing it but we can change the result. Help
little hands and little mouths stay safe." Initially Mrs Hughes said she had been advised to contact her local council but believes it's up to the community to play their part too. "There’s not anything they can physically do," she says. "They can’t stop whoever it is going there and dropping the glass, they can’t put up cameras everywhere, so sometimes we have to do things ourselves. "I just hope people take the initiative to use it if they need to. It takes five minutes to do and it can save so many little hands, little mouths and paws." Since the dustpan and brush has been placed at the park Mrs Hughes says she hasn't seen anymore glass. But, she admits, she's surprised it's still there. "Someone jumped on it straight away and said, 'How long is it going to last?', but I thought I can try can’t I? It only cost a couple of quid. I’m hoping it will be taken in the spirit that it’s about giving. I did think maybe
it would be vandalised by the people that have been there leaving rubbish and glass, but you have to give it a try don’t you. I’m not losing anything by trying." Over the last year West Swindon Parish Council have spent £180,000 renovating four parks in the borough. Despite the two incidences with glass, Mrs Hughes says she loves taking her daughter to Middleleaze Park and hopes her community gesture will continue to let others enjoy the park too.
Conservation team preserves splendour of St Mary's Church By Ben Fitzgerald ben@swindonlink.com
A group of 24 students have been helping to carry out painstaking conservation work at St Mary’s Church in Lydiard Tregoze. The youngsters, drawn from as far afield as Italy, the United States, Spain and Switzerland have been working under the watchful eye of conservator Dr Jane Rutherfoord and fellow expert Eddie Sinclair to preserve historically significant features of the church. The project, to restore medieval wall paintings, 17th Century monuments, carved woodwork and a painted ceiling have been funded by a £615,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant - towards a £901,605 delivery phase. The funding will also enable the church to carry out environmental and access improvements as well as the 6
delivery of a specialist training programme, volunteering and community engagement activities. The internal conservation work is anticipated to be
completed by the end of September 2019 and from October the conserved wall paintings and the South porch will be on view to the public. Bishop of Swindon Rt. Reverend Dr Lee Rayfield said: “The National Lottery receives many deserving applications so it is particularly heartening that Swindon has once again been supported by the award of a major grant. St.Mary’s remains a national treasure
and enabling us to preserve and restore its unique features continues to benefit local people as well as enriching our country’s heritage.” Project Chair Paul Gardner said: “It is wonderful news and we are immensely grateful to the National Lottery and very excited about taking our plans forward, especially working with the many organizations from across the town – The Friends of Lydiard Park, schools ,Swindon Art College,
The Arts Society , Swindon Festival of Literature, Prime Theatre and many more – that have enthusiastically supported the project and pledged their support and involvement. “We have virtually raised the match funded of £304,600 needed for this stage of the project following receipt of substantial individual donations as well as grants from a range of charities and other organisations including The Friends of Lydiard Park, Garfield Weston Foundation, West Swindon & Lydiard Tregoze Church Partnership, All Churches Trust, The Pilgrim Trust, St Andrews Conservation Trust, The Leche Trust, Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, The Alan Evans Memorial Trust, William & Jane Morris Fund, Idlewild Trust and continued public fund raising .I wish to thank the National Lottery whole heartedly for making this crucial award. Voles delay work
A colony of water voles has delayed a £13m Thames Water pipeline upgrade scheme along the River Cole near Swindon. Vegetation was removed to encourage the voles to move downstream before their burrows were searched and removed. The outfall pipe will soon be put into action. To reduce the impact of pressurised water on the banks of the river, a temporary silt lagoon has been constructed close by, and discharging will take place via a temporary spillway on the river bank. The banks will eventually be reinstated and reseeded with a variety of vole-friendly plant species.

Homeless charity is looking for community spirit this Christmas By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
A long-standing homeless charity, which supports vulnerable people during the Christmas season, is calling on volunteers to lend a hand this December. Each year Christmas Care provides shelter, hot food and social activities for vulnerable adults during the Christmas period. The charity has been supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Swindon since 1988. We ask Diane Killick, Christmas Care's Chairman, about the charity. "Christmas Care was founded 30 years ago by Betty Spence because there was nowhere for the homeless to go at Christmas. "A friend John Davidson (who is now our treasurer) asked me to come along to see if I could help out about 11 years ago, which I did, a few years later became a trustee, then 3 years

Massive change could see borough council up for election every four years Swindon Borough Council is running a public consultation on a potential change to its election cycle, with the option to move away from the current ‘by thirds’ election model to a ‘whole council’ model instead. Residents of the borough are encouraged to voice their preference between the two proposed models via a postal consultation form which was sent to every household in September. The consultation will end on 25 October. The current election cycle used by the Council currently takes place in ‘thirds’. In this model, councillors are elected for a term of four years, with one third being elected for three consecutive years which is then followed by a fourth year when there are no elections. The proposed alternative model, ‘whole council elections’, would mean that all seats on the Council will be elected at the same time, once every four
years. Currently, this model is used by 70 per cent of unitary authorities across the country. The biggest difference with ‘whole council elections’ is that there would be no borough elections between the fouryearly elections apart from by-elections, which would be triggered when an elected borough councillor does not complete their four-year term. Matt Box, Swindon Borough Council’s Head of Elections and Democracy, said: “This consultation is an opportunity for the people of the borough to have a say on how they vote for their local councillors in the future and how their local area
is run. “I would encourage everyone to take part in the consultation via the postal forms sent to every household and provide feedback so that councillors can understand the views of residents before making their decision.” After the consultation period has finished, councillors will consider all the feedback received from the public consultation and make a decision on which model to use at the Extraordinary Council Meeting on 21 November. Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group have been nominated as Brunel Shopping Centre's chosen charity this year. Former Brunel employee Kerry Fry nominated the charity which has supported her son Oscar, who is now five, who has Down’s syndrome. Partnership bid to create urban meadows A project to enhance urban meadows and forest habitats while improving people’s health is about to be launched in Swindon. Swindon Borough Council has teamed up with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to deliver the three-year Forest Meadows Project, which will include 12 sites within the borough covering more than 170 hectares. Most of the meadow and forest sites are located along the corridor of the River Ray, but the project will also link to other areas including Sevenfields, the Lawns and WWT reserves. The project, which is being funded by the council with £80,000 in Section 106 developer contributions and other biodiversity grants, will be led by WWT, who will work with the council, parish councils and local community groups. It will involve sustaining existing meadows by establishing annual maintenance programmes to form traditional ‘hay meadows’ as well as more intensive management of other sites such as stripping existing vegetation and re-sowing and planting
wildflowers. WWT Chief Executive Dr Gary Mantle MBE said: “We are delighted to enter into this three-year project with Swindon Borough Council, and look forward to working with parishes and local groups. This comes at a time of increasing public concern about and demand for action on a range of critical environmental issues, including loss of wildlife, the decline in insects (particularly pollinators), climate change, and a heightened awareness of the importance of the natural world for our health and wellbeing." A rugby player from Wootton Bassett has celebrated her fifth year as President of the Supermarine Rugby Football Club. She is the first ever woman to take on the position. Last month to mark her fifth year as president of the Supermarines, Pixie Bickell, a teaching assistant at the Royal Wootton Basset Academy, made her President's Day all about inclusivity. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary since women first joined the club, Miss Bickell 43, said she wanted the event to showcase the club’s progression as well as her own values. Ahead of the event she said: "Each president has their own take on how they celebrate being president of the club. My vision, and my focus for the day is inclusion and involvement. "I feel really honoured,
especially as I was nominated. When I first started rugby there was only something like three female presidents in the whole of the UK. That’s not the case now. "With encouragement from the blue family I went onto play county, then regional, and then trained with the England Academy squad. "Now I’m on the older end of the spectrum, - and my days are numbered with how long I can carry on playing - so my focus is now more on the future generation by coaching and encouraging a family-style support."

GWH staff back new law change to encourage more organ donors Staff at Great Western Hospital are backing a campaign to encourage more people to become donors. The campaign comes ahead of a new organ donation law in England. From spring 2020, the law in England will change, and everybody will be automatically listed as a registered organ donor, unless they have officially opted out. That is why, last Organ Donation Week (2-8 September), NHS Blood and Transplant asked for people to come together to ‘Pass it on’ – passing on organs in death, passing on your wishes to family, and passing on the news that the law is changing. But, organ donations do not just come from the deceased. A living donor may decide to donate an organ, blood or bone marrow. Lesley Biles is the Legal Services Manager at Great
Western Hospital. Following a routine blood test, it was discovered that she had chronic kidney failure. Before having to undergo dialysis, Lesley received the news that a donor had been matched to her. Her husband, Adi Biles, a biomedical support worker at the hospital, had wanted to donate a kidney to Lesley but the couple were not a direct match. Instead, they took part in a paired exchange scheme which allowed Adi to indirectly donate his kidney to Lesley, by donating instead to another through a chain process. Lesley recieved a kidney from a stranger and Adi’s kidney was donated to a child. Lesley said: "Donating a kidney is the most generous gift anybody can ever give, especially when they don’t know the individual themselves. It is such an admirable and inspirational thing to do.”

Fundraisers go the whole hog! Police seeking new recruits
A new hedgehog hut will soon be available at Oak and Furrows Wildlife Rescue Centre thanks to a £1,465 donation by The Brunel shopping centre. The money was raised by staff at The Brunel from various fundraising activities throughout the year which included the sale of upcycled furniture, a curry night, and proceeds from selling space at craft fairs. Oak & Furrows’ CEO, Charles Pope, said: “We are really grateful to everyone at The

Brunel for selecting us as their charity of the year and raising this money for us. It will be going towards the fitting out of a brand new hedgehog hut where injured hedgehogs as well as baby hoglets can be looked after and rehabilitated safely.“ Each year staff at The Brunel select one charity as their staff Charity of the Year in order to focus their fundraising efforts. Next year’s chosen charity is Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group.
Wiltshire police have launched an ambitious recruitment drive - welcoming officer recruits following a two year freeze. The campaign coincides with a Home Office national advertising campaign to recruit 20,000 more police officers over the next three years. The national police recruitment drive is the biggest in decades, with the Government announcing funding to support the recruitment of a first wave of up to 6,000 officers, shared among the 43 police forces in England and Wales. The remaining 14,000 will be hired in the following two years. The number of officers allocated to each police force is still to be confirmed, but Wiltshire Police has welcomed the announcements, which reflect the continued pressure the police service is under. Deputy Chief Constable Paul Mills said: “This is excellent news for policing and the local community. We are gearing up for a significant uplift in
police officer numbers in the coming years, with more than 100 students already planned to start police officer training in Wiltshire over the next 12 months. Additional Government funding will enable us to recruit, train and deploy even more officers to tackle crime and the issues that are really important to our communities.” The Force has opened an online Talent Bank at www. wiltshire.police.uk for applicants to pre-register their interest in becoming a police officer. The campaign will run until 13 October and successful applicants start training in June 2020. From next year, Wiltshire Police will offer a three-year police degree apprenticeship and a two-year programme for those who already hold a degree, working in partnership with the University of South Wales. A fresh start as three new Swindon schools welcome pupils The Deanery Church of England Academy secondary in Wichelstowe, William Morris Primary School in Tadpole Garden Village and Badbury Park Primary School at Badbury Park have welcomed their first intake of pupils. It is the first time that this many schools have opened simultaneously in Swindon. The new schools will mean there are a total of 1,200 school spaces available for secondary aged children and 1,260 school places available for primary aged children in Swindon. This is in contrast to the situation in other parts of the country. The Local Government Association recently reported that by 2024-25, 71 councils will face not being able to meet demand for 123,195 school places. Over the past few years, members of Swindon Borough Council’s Education team have managed to secure external investment to the tune of approximately £105m.

Pets and Nature It's meerkat madness at Studley Grange Farm Park!
The staff at Studley Grange Butterfly World & Farm Park have been busy designing and building a new enclosure for the latest additions to the zoo area. Once the building work was complete and staff were sure the enclosure was secure, they set off with great excitement to collect the new gang of Meerkats. The new group consists of five young Meerkats, aged between 1.5 years and 3 years, two males and three females. Like all young animals they are full of fun and mischief, and had in fact demonstrated their escaping skills the night before collection in the zoo they were bred in. On arrival at Studley Grange the Meerkats quickly explored their new enclosure, and settled in well, we hope that they will breed in the near future. You may be wondering why we now have 2 separate gangs of Meerkats, and why we have not integrated them. Meerkats originate from the Kalahari
Desert region, and always live in strong family groups called gangs or mobs, having on average 30 – 50 Meerkats per gang. Like most wild animals they are very territorial and will fight to defend their ground, therefore introducing Meerkats from two different groups is not possible. Our original Meerkats have been at Studley Grange since
it first opened and old age is catching up with them. By bringing in a new younger gang we can ensure that there will always be Meerkats at Studley Grange Butterfly World & Farm Park. Even though summer is coming to an end it is still a perfect time to visit, see our new arrivals and learn about the other animal residents at Studley Grange including our
beautiful display of tropical butterflies which you can walk amongst in our tropical greenhouses. National Self Build Centre commits to the Real Living Wage The Homebuilding Centre Limited, the employeeowned business that operates The National Self Build & Renovation Centre has been accredited as a Living Wage Employer. The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at the NSBRC receive a minimum hourly wage of £9 - significantly higher than the government minimum for over 25s, which currently stands at £7.83 per hour. In the South West, a fifth of all jobs pay less than the real Living Wage. The real Living Wage is calculated according to the costs of living and provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. Since 2011 the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to more than 160,000 people and put more than

£800m extra into the pockets of low paid workers. The Politics Page Council needs your views on changes to local council elections How often people cast their votes is at the centre of an important consultation which is underway here in Swindon. All Swindon Link readers should have received a letter and an explanatory leaflet from the council asking for their views on how often they would like to go to the polling stations to vote for their local councillors. Swindon currently uses the ‘by thirds’ election model where a third of councillors are elected for a four-year term over a period of three consecutive years. We then have a fourth year when there are no elections. Councillors from all parties
voted earlier this year to ask residents if they would like to continue with this cycle, or move to a ‘whole council’ model instead where all councillors are elected for a fouryear term every four years. There are arguments for both
models. On the one hand, the ‘by-thirds’ model maintains accountability and allows residents to regularly hold the current administration to account. Conversely, it is more costly and, in my experience, the nature of 12-monthly elections means that it is more difficult to set a strategic direction and deliver on your priorities when you lose several weeks a year due to the preelection

Pupils warned about the dangers of carrying weapons thanks to new awareness campaign Swindon Borough Council has worked with its partners to launch a campaign aimed at educating young people and parents about the risks associated with carrying weapons and drug abuse. Save a Friend aimed to encourage young people to help a friend if they think they are at risk of being exploited, educate young people about the dangers of carrying a weapon and signpost to agencies who can provide support for young people and their families. Although a rise in knife crime has been reported across the country, Wiltshire has one of the lowest rates in the UK. The Council, in partnership with Wiltshire Police and Swindon’s secondary schools and colleges, is taking a proactive approach to ensure that crime involving the use of weapons does not become an issue in Swindon. The campaign aimed to reassure both young people and their parents or carers and give them the information they need to recognise if someone is trying to draw a young
person into this type of activity. Information was also provided on how young people can support each other and where they can go if they need help. The Save a Friend campaign took place from Thursday (19 Sep) until 26 September. The programme of activity coincided with Operation Sceptre, a national Police knife and weaponry amnesty. Over the two weeks, pupils had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers who had experiences of gang involvement and drug abuse. There was also be firearm and knife education sessions hosted by the police and a dedicated school curriculum on the issue. Councillor Cathy Martyn, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Safety, said: ““It is important that we educate our young people on the dangers of gang activity and the dangers of using weapons. “The work we are doing with the schools and colleges of Swindon helps young people to make the right choices and become more resilient. “We don't want to see any
young person being criminally exploited in Swindon. At the same time as tackling the people responsible for these crimes, we are educating our young people about the signs and the risks, so they can make the right choices.” Sgt David Tippetts said: “The ‘Save a Friend’ campaign is an excellent way of educating young people to look out for each other and stay safe. “It’s important that young
people know the warning signs and the risks associated with carrying weapons. This coupled with information for teaching staff and parents really does encompass everyone who can make a difference and will continue to reduce fear amongst young people. “Wiltshire Police fully support this initiative and we will continue to work with partner agencies in our approach to knife crime.” swindonlink.com n October 2019

Swindon Town FC: 'Fans are sensing something special' One of the best starts to a league season has seen an abundance of optimism develop around the County Ground. Fans are sensing something special brewing at the County Ground as Richie Wellens and his men have made a brilliant start to the season. Town fans have arrived in numbers home and way as they feel as if this could be a very good season. The signings of Lloyd Isgrove and Eoin Doyle have only helped this as many fans are overjoyed with their contributions on the pitch. Swindon are setting a reputation for being an exciting team to watch in this division and that is all down to Wellens. Fans have dubbed his style of football “Wellensball”. Swindon now, unlike previous years, move the ball with purpose and speed and they also counter
attack with efficiency. When not in possession they press in numbers like a wolf pack and they try and win the ball back quickly. At the time of writing Swindon had even scored the most goals in the EFL. Wellens has constantly stated how he wants his players to become club legends. A club with pictures of legends like Don Rodgers, Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle and most recently Charlie Austin and Matt Ritchie hanging in the corridors of the county ground. Swindon have lacked a hero in recent years and now is the time for Wellens and his men to implement themselves into history. Could 30 July 2019 potentially be the day that Richie Wellens struck gold for Swindon? On that day Swindon signed free agent Lloyd Isgrove from Barnsley. Isgrove signed after a successful trial at SN1, many fans were over the
moon when the announcement that town had captured the former Southampton player was confirmed. Isgrove excited the fans with his dazzling pre season displays and it would be fair to say he has carried the momentum into the new season. He can terrorise a defence and his pinpoint passing have led him to become one of the top assist providers in the league. While there was a defeat at home against Northampton Swindon have been impeccable home and away. Key factors in this are Swindon's new strike force of experienced Eoin Doyle and workman Jerry Yates. Both have had scintillating starts to life at the County Ground. Fans were relieved when Doyle walked through the door at the county ground as Swindon have lacked a proven goalscorer. Interviews: the headliners of the Wyvern's Christmas panto This year the 2019 pantomime at the Wyvern Theatre is Sleeping Beauty. From 7 December 2019 to 5 January 2020, the production has enlisted soap star Michelle Collins (the evil Carabosse),
acclaimed CBeebies presenter Chris Jarvis (Happy Harry) and esteemed actor Matthew Rixon (the dame) to join this year's cast. Ahead of the show Claire Dukes caught up with the trio to talk family
important. It’s a great tradition that is thankfully not dying. At one point I thought it might, but actually it got bigger and bigger. Michelle Collins, what is your favourite thing about a pantomime? It’s the whole dressing up and just that magic of panto and seeing people’s faces, and the kids really enjoying it. And for some of the kids it’s the first time they’ve been to a show or been to the theatre even. And I think that’s really

I just think that pantos have a good reputation of just being really good fun, with a lot laughs. And it caters for all of the family; there’s double entendres for the adults; there’s something there for the children – there’s something for everybody and everybody can enjoy it.
Matthew Rixon, from your experience do you feel like family theatre is declining, or are you seeing it on the rise? Family theatre is still quite strong because panto’s quite strong. Maybe we could do with it all year round! But also, musicals are very popular at the moment, and maybe we all need a bit

But we all need something to make us smile. And the panto tales are so wonderful because they are moral tales essentially, – or tales of redemption – and we need that.
It is important to keep it up to date. The traditions of panto are there, but using modern technology to make it a bit more 2019. The challenge with the panto is to take something that is traditional and old fashioned and make it relevant. That’s what we’ve spent all year doing!
Panto is a lot of people’s first experience of the theatre and so it’s our responsibilityn (not just job) to make it as wonderful and as magical as it can be. I’m dead excited!
Chris Jarvis, why should people come and see Sleeping Beauty? It’s the fact that this is escapism, it’s a feel-good show. It’s all about the show, but it’s also all about the comedy and it’s for absolutely everyone. I mean telly is still producing fantastic stuff, but they don’t do what panto does

Debut of song competition comes full circle at The Hop Inn By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
Last year the producer of a Swindon-based recording studio created an original song competition . After a nearly a year of writing, recording, interviews and mixing the winner, Paul Lappin, released his first single 'Life Was Good'. To mark the event Mr Lappin performed the single live at The Hop Inn. Paul said: "It’s been a fascinating, exhausting, and exciting experience and I’m hoping that there’s much more to come. "I only entered to get some professional, independent feedback on my songs. Well, I certainly got that! It’s been quite the journey that’s for sure; the live gigs; the interviews; the BBC radio session. "I couldn’t have asked for a better working relationship. The real surprise was how quickly Jon made me feel comfortable
in the studio. It can be quite the intimidating experience, walking in for the first time to record vocals. "Another huge thing for me was finally having a band to collaborate with – Lee Alder, Andy Maggs, Lee Moulding and Jon himself. We all just hit it off right from the start. "The 'For The Song' project was created for people like me – someone who writes songs in their spare time, is considering doing something with them, maybe wants to get them recorded professionally but finds the whole studio environment, and the music industry in general, intimidating. For me personally, simply entering the competition gave me a confidence boost. Winning it took things to a whole new level." Music producer, and the owner of Earthworm Recording Studio, Jon Buckett added: "With respect to the most important aim, of finding a

"The idea was always to find someone with a very pure intention behind their songs, writing for their own pleasure, without any contrived intention of writing for one chart or another, or for a specific audience; it’s those honest, instinctive intentions behind songwriting that often result in the songs that personally interest me the most. So I’m really happy we got the process well focussed enough
to generate a strong pool of entries and to find what we were hoping for. "I don’t know if there are other similar ones [competitions] out there, but what I would say is that it’s a genuine collaboration at grass roots level. It’s not complicated by intentions to find a “whole package”, whatever that means, or concerned with record sales. Swindon Lives IN CONVERSATION WITH: Ian Daly By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
For most people the idea of buying a puppy is a dream, but for other people - with full-time jobs, or young children - the reality is just not practical. A dog trainer in Stratton, however, seems to have found the solution - and a booming business. Ian Daly, 43, has been training dogs since he was 16. Unfortunately, after realising that dog training wasn't the most financially stable career, he got himself a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and went into optics. "I enjoyed working in optics," he explains "I loved my profession – hated the industry. So, when I left optics I had an idea that I wanted to work with dogs again and I suppose I went down the traditional route of advertising myself as a dog trainer, so if people had a dog that had a problem I’d go and help them solve that problem. But trying to get 30 to 40 hours of work a week in that fashion was a complete nightmare – it’s really difficult. "So, I ended up getting to a point where I thought, ‘I’m going to stop this and get back into optics.’ But I was a training a dog at that point – a really nice little boxer that was a rescue but had some fearbased aggression issues, which we got over – and the owner of that dog turned around and said, ‘I really enjoyed this journey, I’ve learnt loads about the dog but wouldn’t it be great if dogs came trained?’ And that was the lightbulb. I thought, 'I can do that'. Then it was just a case of throwing my hat in and seeing what happened." On the one hand you could call Ian a dog trainer by trade, but he is currently the 28
only person in the UK buying puppies for clients and training them. It was after his third batch of puppies that word spread, and the calls came in from people asking for specific breeds for Ian to buy and train on their behalf. On top of this he has also bred three litters from his own Black Russian Terriers - he has five [pictured] - and has sold some of those pups to willing buyers for £5,500. "What I try to do is not put people off having a dog but find a dog which is most suitable to them. When I go to buy a dog for people, I buy it as if I’m buying it for myself, so I think, 'What do I want in a dog?' "[As a breeder] What I do a bit differently to other people is I offer a certain number of buying options. Obviously, they can buy the dog at eightweeks-old with no training whatsoever but then they can buy it fully trained if they want to. I’ve got three levels of training: bronze [14-weeks], silver [18-weeks] and gold [22-weeks]." Whilst it might seem shocking that a guy selling puppies for up to £5k has no ‘official’ training qualifications he points out that trainers like Victoria Stilwel (It’s Me or the Dog) don’t either. What Ian does have, however, is a wealth of experience, happy customers and a "natural affinity" with dogs.

Embrace the e-bike revolution! By Becky Cox: Swindon Cycle Campaign Have you tried an electric bike yet? e-bikes are fast becoming a more common sight on our streets, opening up cycling to a whole new group of people. In the UK we’re only just catching onto the e-bike revolution, whereas approximately a third of bike sales in countries such as Germany and Holland are now of the electric variety. But what’s all the hype about? And isn’t it cheating? This sense of ‘cheating’ is all based around the idea that cycling is only for the strongest and fittest in our society. Cycling is something that everyone should feel able to do. In this sense, e-bikes need to be viewed as a transport revelation rather than a piece of sports equipment. An e-bike then becomes a way to help make our commutes greener, make cycling more accessible for people with mobility or health issues, and
make climbing hills more fun! I’ve been borrowing an e-bike recently to help me continue my commute to work through the last few months of pregnancy, and it’s certainly making the inclines and headwinds that bit less tiring. Whilst I’m lucky to be able to borrow an e-bike, the relatively high purchase price does tend to make them less accessible to those of us with tighter budgets. However, e-bikes are perfect for journeys around town and the commute. They’re a great alternative to a second car, and you can now get them on the Government’s ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme since the £1,000 limit has now been lifted. Ask your employer to find out more. Swindon comedian is finalist for prestigious Funny Women Awards By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
A former Greendown and Bradon Forest School pupil from West Swindon has won third place at the 2019 Funny Women Awards. Having battled it out against 433 entrants from across the globe, she was one of nine to reach the finals in her category. Despite having only been in the comedy circuit for just over a year, Charlie George - from Toothill, West Swindon - came third in the Funny Women Stage Award category. Just over a year ago, after suffering from writer's block, Miss George drove her creativity in a new direction: comedy. Since then she has won the LGBTQ+ New Comedian of the Year award and was a runner-up at this year's Funny Women Awards - previous winners and nominees include Katherine Ryan, Sarah Pascoe and Sarah Millican. Speaking of her win Miss George says, "I came runner up, – third place – which was brilliant! "It was really fun - I had a great night! The standard was insanely high, but everybody was just getting such great laughs. "The woman who won, she hadn’t been going for very long and she was amazing – super, super funny. The second-place winner was my friend, who is a working-class comedian from the North of England who I think deserved her place as well. "I was really happy to even be placed, because it was really good! It’s really nice to come away with something. "I think the lady who won – as a surprise prize – is going to get mentorship from Jo Brand which is amazing. The rest of us just feel like we’ve got an amazing network of women around us now because we had
such a fun time backstage – everyone was just really lovely. "It was one of the better competitions I’ve done in terms of everybody being so funny. I think they vetted it really well because everybody was of a certain standard. "I was really nervous waiting and was ready to be like, “Well I’ve had fun time…’ and then they called my name! This is exactly what happened to me in Edinburgh, back in August, when I came third place in another competition, so obviously I am really good at being third [laughs]!" Miss George says that even before the finals the experience alone made her feel like a winner. Ahead of the finals, and speaking of the nomination, she said, "To be honest I just feel really grateful to grace the stage with some of the funniest women around. "I am always somewhat in shock and disbelieving of things going well, I’m sad to report that deep down I’m a worst expectations kind of person - the night I won the LGBTQ+ New Comedian Award I was going through a housing nightmare, felt rough and nearly didn’t wake up for the gig! "I also definitely didn’t think I was going to get to the Funny Women final - I actually
booked another gig on 19 September that I had to cancel because I thought I'd done so badly! *Note to self: don’t always rely on your gloomy feelings! “It feels great and really affirming that if I keep working hard, I can have a career at this, doing something I love." Describing her comedy as "a heady mix of sinful and silly", Miss George draws on her upbringing as a source of material and her childhood memories in Swindon, she says, have certainly provided her with a lot to talk about particularly being mix-race, queer and the child of a “Daily-Mail-reading Jehovah'sWitness-mum”. In one of her sketches - which won her the LGBTQ+ New Comedian Award - Miss George says, “I’d love to unveil some kind of exotic, cultural background for you it’s just that I was raised in Swindon.” “Swindon is definitely the butt of many a joke [laughs],” she says. “I remember reading the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time as a kid and it referred to Swindon as ‘the arse end of nowhere’ or something like that! And the shame started from there. “It’s funny because I’ll be honest, I hated it as a child. I think at the time I was there
being mixed-race and queer still wasn’t easy, and with my mum being a Jehovah’s Witness - and us being forced to knock on everyone’s doors at the weekend and sell them God - it really wasn’t helpful with the bullies, my crappy selfimage or lack of friends and connection. Although with time away in cities - where being different is more celebrated and normalised - a lot of this has become my material and informed the kind of person I am now.” Although she faced challenges throughout her early years in Swindon Miss George adds, “I have really fond memories of my grandmother - who lived and died in Park North - and walking around Coate Water and Lydiard Park with her. So, it’s not all doom and gloom and I do know what I did have compared to other children. “It was a weird place to grow up, but now I have a lot of nostalgia and going to visit my older sister and my niece and nephew - who are growing up in a much more accepting time - is really healing." Miss George, who lives in London, currently works part-time for a humanist organisation that does various activist projects - including supporting migrants who have no recourse to public funds. Volunteers strut the catwalk to support charity GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING SERVICES

Models of all shapes and sizes took to the catwalk to mark the opening of a new charity shop in Swindon town centre. Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service (formerly known as Swindon Women’s Aid) staged a fashion show to mark the official opening of their new shop. Among those modelling clothes were Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson, former Swindon Mayor Junab Ali, Paddy Bradley Director of Swindon and Wiltshire LEP and Ian Jeary, Dorset & Wilts fire Service. Supported by the Wyvern Theatre and the media makeup team from Swindon New College, the fashion parade showcased a wide range of evening wear, day wear and
even a bridal collection. The shop, in the Parade, is a joint venture between the charity and Swindon Freemasons; who have financially supported the shop’s renovation. It is run by volunteers and will sell a variety of previously loved items of clothing, furniture, books and toys. The shop also provides a safe room where victims of domestic abuse can seek safety and privacy and access the services of a Domestic Abuse Advisor. Chair of the charity’s board of trustees Nicky Alberry said: "It has been an exciting few months watching everyone’s hard work come to fruition. We are delighted to be working with the Swindon Freemasons on this new venture and we have a fantastic team of shop
volunteers led by Carol Gibbon who work tirelessly for us. "The money raised through the shop will provide a fantastic boost to the work we do supporting victims of domestic violence and abuse in the community and at our purpose-built refuge.” Peter Cowen, from Swindon Freemasons and the Project Manager, said: “We have received so much support and generosity from Freemasons Lodges, Swindon Borough
Council and local businesses during the past four months. It has been hard work, but our efforts are now being rewarded with a superb shop, my sincere thanks to everyone.” The venture was funded by local organisations including £1,000 from Midcounties Cooperative, and practical donations such as mannequins and new stock from local businesses.
