Cash hopes for new museum and art gallery dashed By Ben Fitzgerald ben@swindonlink.com

Director of the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery Trust Rod Hebden remains upbeat in the wake of the news that the bid for £12.7m from the Heritage Lottery Fund had fallen through – and determined to build on the momentum of the project. Under the proposed scheme, Swindon’s nationally important collection of 20th century art would have been housed in an iconic, purpose-built ‘winged’ design building on the site of the Wyvern Theatre car park. Mr Hebden said: “I’m still smiling, but it’s been so difficult to keep this under wraps,” adding that he had received the disappointing news 11 weeks ago and had been forced to remain tight lipped ahead of the local elections. “I have to admit that part of me is gutted at the news, that’s the word that a lot of people have been using, but it’s now important to move on positively.” He explained that feedback from the HLF had been “glowing” and that the cooperation between the Trust and Swindon Borough Council and the strength of the bid had been praised. “We knew that it was going to be difficult – I personally estimated that we had a 1 in 3 chance of securing the money. It was an ambitious bid and everyone involved put their heart and soul into it. We have been in contact

We should celebrate everything that’s been achieved and build on that. “We have already got talks lined up with the council and the lottery fund. We are not taking a breather, it’s full steam ahead.” And on whether a less

ambitious bid would have had a greater chance of success Rod said: “There is no way of knowing, but we felt it was important to create the best bid we could. I don’t think that cutting corners is the way forward.” Addressing the vocal campaign against the proposals, Rod said: “The good thing is that it shows that the people of Swindon are passionate about their heritage and to engage in that debate. "We have had some people who signed the petition against the proposed art gallery in the first instance but then changed their mind about it when they found out more about it. We are keen to continue to talk to everyone – it’s important that we keep

having those conversations. One of the positive things about this whole process is the level of debate. It shows that people care about heritage. Most people want the best for Swindon. It’s passionate people who care about the town that will help bring about change.” Sitting alongside Rod Hebden was Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard, who explained that there was a pressing need for the town’s art collection to be housed in a more suitable building. “This building is not fit for purpose. When it was opened in 1964 it was only ever going to be a temporary site. But temporary buildings have a habit of becoming permanent. We are going to look at all the options open to us.”

Super trouper: ‘Swindon Treasure’ still motivates efforts to reach £1m for Breast Cancer Now By Claire Dukes claire@swindonlink.com

Swindon Treasure Shirley Garman continues to motivate friends and family to raise £1m for charity after she lost her battle to breast cancer. In 1995 Shirley Garman pledged to raise £1m towards fighting breast cancer after founding the local group Wiltshire Breakthrough. Unfortunately Shirley lost her battle with cancer in 2009. Since then her friends, family, and fellow campaigners have vowed to reach Shirley’s target and continue to fundraise in her memory through Breast Cancer Now. For the charity’s next fundraiser the group will be hosting a Mamma Mia singa-long Saturday 16 June. Celebrating in true dancing queen style the event includes a Greek island dress code as well as a Greek buffet, followed by a raffle after the

film screening. Shirley’s friend and fellow fundraiser Eunice Salmon said: “We started campaigning many, many years ago – when we started we wanted to raise £1m, and since Shirley’s passing have vowed to carry on in her memory. “We are £44,000 off our target and want to invite anyone to help us achieve this challenge. Next year will be the tenth anniversary of Shirley’s death. “It’s funny because the day we announced this fundraiser was the day ABBA announced they would be releasing new records, and then of course the new movie will be out this July – so we’re hoping this will help push our cause.” The sing-a-long screening of Mamma Mia will take place at Old Town’s Christ Church from 7.15pm. An evening of dancing, acrobatics, and comedy entertainment will be brought to the stage at Greenmeadow Primary School with Happy’s Circus. Greenmeadow Primary School will be hosting Happy’s Circus for an action-packed comedy night, including circus artists from across the globe. The event, which is not-for-profit, will take place 26 June at Greenmeadow Primary School from 6pm to 8pm. The school, situated near Moredon, is hoping to raise funds in a bid to enrich activities available to pupils. Happy's Circus has been providing children's entertaiment since 1992, performing shows at schools, for charities and working alongside PTAs. 6

Rain on the parade: Swindon and Wiltshire Pride cancelled for 2018 By Claire Dukes claire@swindonlink.com

Festival-goers have been left disappointed after the Swindon and Wiltshire Pride Committee announced the parade will not be taking place this year. Swindon and Wiltshire Pride has been a cultural highlight for many residents over the years but due to a lack of funding and committee members organisers have had to cancel the parade and festival, which would be in its tenth year. Lee Clarke, the Pride Chair, said: “This decision was not arrived at lightly and we appreciate the disappointment not only from the LGBT community but by the many Swindon residents who have come year on year to support us. “We will be holding a Pride Day at the Regent Hotel on the

11 August with our headline act to raise funds for an event in 2019 to celebrate LGBT diversity but given the location it won’t be on the scale we have been able to enjoy in previous years. “The Committee would like to thank all those who have supported this event over the past 10 years, including the many sponsors and local

businesses who have given their time and donations plus the talented artists who have performed. The Committee will work hard to create an event next year which everyone can enjoy and be welcomed to.”

Iconic railway works building to become new church for Swindon The former Pattern Store in Swindon is to be turned into a new church for the town, the Diocese of Bristol has announced. It is part of a plan by the Diocese of Bristol to support the regeneration of railway works area. The Pattern Church, as it will be known, is part of a major strategic initiative by the Diocese of Bristol to support its ‘creating connections’ vision. It will be a Resourcing Church; resourcing church partner with other churches in an area to offer support and resources. The team at Pattern Church will be led by Revd Joel Sales. Joel worked as a pastor at churches in Bath and Cape Town. It is planned that Pattern Church will open around Christmas 2018. The Pattern Store is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1897 for the Great Western

Railway in Swindon at a cost of £4,000. The building held the drawings and papers for the designs associated with the railway and remained in use until the railway works closed in 1986. The basement was used as a mess room during World War I, as a canteen between 1939 to 1960 and more recently the building has been a bar and Italian restaurant. Joel, who is married to Cath and has two young sons, said: “Cath and I feel deeply privileged to be invited by the Bishop of Swindon to take part

in this exciting new initiative. We look forward to working alongside all the other churches in loving and serving the people of Swindon.” Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon, said: “This is set to become the home base for providing fresh energy, people and approaches which will resource other churches across the town and contribute to social transformation. In Swindon's local government elections, the Conservatives held on to the Borough Council having fought off Labour in a close contest. Before the election there was talk of no single party having an overall majority but The Conservatives managed to only just retain control with a majority of one. Overall Labour actually took slightly more of the vote share than the Tories but not in the seats where it would have made a difference. Labour needed four gains to take control of Swindon Borough Council. They took their target seat of Eastcott from the Lib Dems, but the two

key Labour/Conservative marginals of Lydiard & Freshbrook and Stratton St Margaret both stayed in Tory hands. It was the Lib Dems, not Labour, who ate into the Tory majority with their surprise win by just seven votes in Wroughton & Wichesltowe. Stephen Taylor, Swindon Borough Council’s Returning Officer, said: “The Government-funded trial of voter ID ran extremely smoothly overall and we estimate that turnout is up compared to previous years by around six per cent to 40 per cent. Our figures show that of the 62,166 people who voted, only 60 were asked to return to the polling station having not brought their poll card or alternative form of ID along with them.

"Thirty-five of these were either attested or later returned with the appropriate ID leaving just 0.04 per cent of eligible electors who did not either return with alternative ID or seek a replacement poll card. “A huge amount of work went on behind the scenes here in Swindon to raise awareness of the voter ID trial and we carried out extensive engagement with local groups following a detailed equality impact assessment, which was scrutinised by the Cabinet Office, the Electoral Commission, the Association of Electoral Administrators and the Council itself. “The Cabinet Office and Electoral Commission will now carry out a thorough evaluation and lessonslearned exercise.”

A Local Tae Kwon Do group kicked into action with a fundraiser for Uplands School, raising more than £1,000 for the educational institute. North Wilts TKD presented Uplands School with a £1,902.40 cheque after holding a One Hundred Rounds of Sparring charity event. Chief Instructors, Paul and Leanne Lolley, of North Wilts TKD chose to fundraise for Uplands as Paul’s son, and Leanne’s stepson, Zac attends the school. Speaking after the cheque presentation, held at Uplands, Leanne Lolley said: “Schools like Uplands give children with special needs access to life experiences that without additional fundraising they would never have access too, they encourage these children to be themselves which

improves their confidence. “The school made us feel so welcome – Fiona and all the teachers have always been marvellous in supporting North Wilts TKD and Zac.” The money fundraised for Uplands will allow the school to enrich their curriculum which will benefit the pupil’s day-today activities. " “The Lolley family know we try to provide the richest curriculum we can. “We’re preparing to launch an activities week which will bring things into the school as a shared experience. As the excitement for the World Cup starts to build it’s time to start thinking of where you’ll be watching England’s games. Get in the running Aldbourne village is set to host a 5k Fun Run on Sunday June 10. The event is being organised in aid of St Michael’s School to raise much needed funds for an all-weather running track that will be used by the school and community alike. Family aims to raise awareness of sepsis with all-day charity event By Claire Dukes claire@swindonlink.com

A local women and her family will be hosting an all-day fundraiser in memory of her grandparents who they lost to sepsis. In a bid to raise funds for UK Sepsis Trust, Tarlia Clements and her family are inviting the community to their latest charity event Saturday 12 May at the New inn, Stratton. From 12pm to 11pm there will be a range of activities including a raffle, auction, live band, t-shirt designing, face painting, and circus acts. In memory of Tarlia’s grandparents, Brian and Jackie Dowdeswell, the family are also wanting to raise awareness of the disease, also known as bloody poisoning. Tarlia said: “Sepsis affects and takes the lives of too many people every year. Just like cancer, it does not discriminate. I am taking the next year to

raise as much in the way of awareness and funds to the charity UK Sepsis Trust. “Sepsis has left a massive void in our family, and I dread to have to see anyone else go through what we’ve been through. “Once we lost my grandad we decided as a family we will be doing a year of fundraising and raising awareness for sepsis as this is so close to our hearts now.” Since their fundraising began the family have been holding events including golf tournaments, bake sale, quiz nights, with a parachute jump coming up later this year. Arkell’s secures new pub site at Crest Nicholson’s Tadpole Garden Village Wiltshire brewery Arkell’s is celebrating the announcement of its first new-build pub site for fifteen years after buying land at Tadpole Garden Village in North Swindon from developer Crest Nicholson. The brewery will now begin design work to deliver a pub for the new community of Tadpole Garden Village, where 1,855 homes will eventually be built on the old Tadpole Farm site. This is one of Swindon’s major housing projects and the pub will be just one of a whole range of amenities planned for the site, which will include shops, a primary school and community sports facilities on completion. Brewery director George Arkell, said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to build a pub for the community. We’ve been rooted in Swindon for 175 years, and it’s great to be able to make this announcement in our special

anniversary year. “Tadpole Garden Village is an enormous project and our new pub will not only offer residents a place to socialise but will also provide the community with a vital hub for local activities. “We are really looking forward to starting work on the pub’s design and will be putting our years of experience and knowledge of Swindon to work. More than 15 years ago we began work on The Tawny Owl at Taw Hill, Swindon. It opened in 2003 and is one of our most successful Swindon pubs which is now at the centre of a thriving community.” Andrew Dobson, Managing Director of Crest Nicholson’s Strategic Projects division, said: “The new Arkell’s pub will be a wonderful addition to our thriving new community at Tadpole Garden Village. Pride of Swindon plaque unveiled

Swindon Mayor Maureen Penny unveiled a plaque to commemorate the 2018 Pride of Swindon award winners at Swindon Central Library on Tuesday. After an introduction by Swindon 105.5 Community Radio manager Shirley Ludford, the mayor told a crowd of winning and nominated groups and individuals: “I think you are all terrific because of the positive contribution you make in the community.” With a flourish, she lifted

Swindon Link photographer, Rachel Davis, 20, snapped up The UK Picture of the Year award last month in London. Rachel, who works for Calyx Multimedia in Swindon, was unanimously chosen as the winner against three other competititors. She is the first woman to win the award. Rachel said: "I can believe it at all. The other photographers were from bigger publications - one of the images was on the front page of The Sun, and I thought 'Of course that's going to win' - and the photos were really good, so I honestly didn't think I would win. "When they called my name my mouth just dropped. When I told my parents the next day they thought I was tricking them." The picture, selected by a

panel of judges was taken last year in July at the Royal International Air Tattoo. Alongside her job working at McDonald's Rachel has been working part-time in between at Calyx for nearly two years. She said: "Afterwards I was so busy back at work I forgot about winning the award when people congratulated me. It still doesn't feel like it's happened." Rachel was asked to join Calyx by the agency's

owner, and national photographer, Richard Wintle after he saw some of her photographs at a New College end of year show. He said: "She's improved dramatically - taken everything on board - and is now a good press photographer. "When I first saw her images at the exhibition I thought 'there's something about these'. Community radio station boosted by £500 NSBRC donation The National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC) has donated a £500 anniversary present to Swindon 105.5 – the town’s community radio station. RAF 50 aircraft flypast set to mark centenary at RIAT A DRAMATIC flypast featuring more than 50 aircraft from the Royal Air Force will provide a stunning aerial set piece to launch RAF centenary celebrations at this summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo. The massed flypast, which takes place at the Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford on Friday, July 13, will see many of the RAF’s operational aircraft accompanied by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) flying in formation above the crowds at the airshow. Though still to be confirmed, among the aircraft expected to take part will be RAF Typhoons, Tornado GR4s, an A400M Atlas, the Red Arrows, plus Puma and Chinook helicopters. It is hoped that one of only two airworthy Lancaster bombers in the world will to lead the BBMF formation of Spitfires and Hurricanes. The flypast will follow a Royal Review of aircraft and a parade by Service personnel 18

Whilst the massed flypast is scheduled to take place on the Friday only, the Royal Air Force is hoping to stage special RAF100 themed setpieces during the weekend’s eight-hour flying display. On the ground, a large area will be dedicated to the RAF Centenary, where visitors will be able to see aircraft from the RAF’s past, present and future as well as meet those

currently serving to learn about the variety of roles they perform in today’s RAF. Other attractions include the critically-acclaimed Techno Zone, which is full of exciting hands’ on activities designed to stimulate young minds and bring the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) curriculum to life. The Air Tattoo is one of a number of high profile events taking place around the UK over the coming months to mark the RAF’s 100thbirthday

– and will be the focus of international centenary celebrations. Air arms from around the world are being invited to participate and already, many air arms including from Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Finland, Czechoslovakia and Demark have confirmed they will be attending. Joining them will be an historic P-51D Mustang and a state-of-the-art, stealthy USAF F-35A Lightning II that will perform a joint display as part of the US Air Force Heritage Flight. RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises’ Chief Executive Andy Armstrong said this summer’s airshow provided a great opportunity for people around the country to show their appreciation of the Royal Air Force both in terms of what it achieved in the past as well as the role it is performing today.

Swindon-born blonde bombshell Diana Dors was on hand to open Princess Margaret Hospital's fete on 21 August 1982. Diana Mary Fluck was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, on 23 October 1931 at the Haven Nursing Home in Kent Road.

It's all change The June 1998 Link reported on the result of the May local elections as the beginning of the end of the Labour party's dominance in Swindon. Whilst Labour retained control of the council, Freshbrook resident and Gorse Hill councillor Sue Bates lost her seat and was ousted as leader of the council. The outgoing mayor Maurice Fanning became council leader saying there would be a different style with an emphasis on consulting the community at large. "We need to listen more to people so that they genuinely contribute to the destiny of the town." The following year the council was put into special measures and central government commissioners moved in to manage the council. The Conservative Party won back control of the council a couple of years later, a position they have kept ever since. 22

Wiltshire Festival impressario Andy Cotton attended a concert by pop music mad youngsters from Greendown Community School held in the Hilton Hotel in November 1997.

He liked their talent and he agreed to book them for the Party in the Park in Lydiard Park in August 1998. He admitted he was doubtful about allowing the youngsters to perform for fear of

damaging the festival brand. After auditions, musicians and backing singers were teamed up with soul singer Sam Moore of the legendary Sam and Dave duo and they put on a stonking show.

The 671-line poem, originally written by students in 1998 at the school formerly known as Greendown Community School, had not been publibished until last month. Working alongside media

tutor Keith Phillips of Ideal Films, Lydiard Park Academy students premiered their latest project 'Westwords: A Community in Verse’ which also saw some of the orginal writers from 1998 read lines from the poem and revisit the sites 20 years later from when it was written. Overlayed by images of iconic landmarks from West Swindon, the poem was a tribute to the area the students grew up in - an idea which

former English teacher Christine Bennet, and Swindon Link founder Roger Ogle, originally came up with. Christine Bennet said: "The whole thing was a really exciting project. Young people themselves wanted to celebrate where they lived - how often does that happen?" With funding from West Swindon Parish Council the West Words community group were able to fund the assistance of local film

company Ideal Films to work with the academy's media students, to visualise the written words through a film project. Christine added: "Hopefully we can still get young people, and older people, to still see that beauty - celebrating the things, sites and areas around West Swindon. Brookfield pupils and Thamesdown Rotary bring new life to Shaw Forest

As part of a world-wide Rotrary project, Swindon Thamesdown Rotary and Brookfiled Primary School teamed up to bring new life to Shaw Forest Park. In a bid to help sustain the environment, Rotary groups across the globe have pledged to plant one tree per member. “There are premiership footballers and authors who are the same age as the Swindon Festival of Literature!� marvelled event director Matt Holland at the launch of the 25th annual event. And what an event it was. A wide range of authors shared their ideas, attitudes and writing with visitors encompassing such diverse subjects as space travel, running, ecology, philosophy, parenthood, poetry, identity, art and artificial intelligence. In keeping with festival tradition, the two week long celebration of the written word began at the crack of dawn on Monday May 7 with a celebration of songs, performance and readings at the Lawns in Old Town. And over the following

14 days, event organisers staged more than 50 events at venues around the town including the Arts Centre, Wyvern Theatre, Lower Shaw Farm and Lydiard Park. Among the authors and guests at this year's event were runner Jo Pavey, philosopher A C Grayling, poets Ben Okri and Michael Rosen, punk turned author Viv Albertine, nurse turned author Christine Watson, tennis coach turned author Judy Murray and politician turned author Harriet Harman. In the words of event director Matt Holland: "I've been running this thing for 25 years and I've noticed that something amazing happens when you get people in a room and you allow them to talk. Swindon Shuffle is back once again for a total takeover of the town’s pubs and music venues. The Shuffle is one of the major players in Swindon’s cultural calendar, showcasing a vast variety of the town’s local unsigned original talent with old favourites, the up and coming, and musicians fresh on the scene. From July 11 to July 15 bands and musicians will be invading The Tuppenny, The Victoria, The Castle, The Beehive, and Baila. As per usual Swindon Shuffle is

completely free to attend, and this year is partnered up with local charity Swindon Mind to raise money and awareness towards mental health – giggoers will be able to pledge donations at each venue. Over 40 local artists will be performing over four days – the line-up includes The Harlers, True Strays, Tasmin Quin, Hip Route, SexJazz, Flour Babies, Moleville, The Oxymora, Canute’s Plastic Army, Matthew Bryant, Grasslands, GETRZ and many many more! Swindon Lives IN CONVERSATION WITH: Dave Young By Claire Dukes claire@swindonlink.com After being treated for throat cancer, Dave Young is gearing up for a motorcycle ride 'Road to Recovery' to Cyprus in aid of Brighter Futures. Dave, 56, from Walcot - known to most as the former landlord of The Victoria and 12 Bar in Swindon - was diagnosed with throat cancer in March 2016. As the closest hospital with a radiotherapy unit, Dave recieved treatment at Churchill Hospital in Oxford. Now in remission Dave and his wife Anna Sprawson are raising money to help Brighter Futures' Radiotherapy Appeal reach their target to build a radiotherapy unit in Swindon. Anna said: "One thing we noticed was an endless stream of Swindon taxis outside the hospital, dropping people off for a five minute treatment. It would help a lot of people to have the unit here." Luckily for Dave and Anna they were able to park their mobile home in Churchill Hospital's car park during David's six weeks of treatment, but they explained that this was still tough. Dave added: "It's only when it happens to you that you're aware of what's going on - the realities of it all." A motorbike enthusiatic and engineer, he has been planning a road trip for some time. he explained: "I had a hankering to do a long trip on the bike, and now I'm able to use it to do some good and raise some money." For someone who has undergone extensive surgery radiotherapy and chemotherapy - you would expect to meet someone quite disheartened. Dave and Anna however feel more motivated and upbeat than ever. He explained: "I had to wear this mask over my face which was then bolted down to a table - because of my claustrophobia, this was my worst nightmare. The treatments felt like the sun burning your throat and food tasted like metal. But up on the ward people were dying, and that kicked me up the arse." As part of his treatment Dave was fed through a nasogastric feed for four weeks. "That made me miserable," he explained "I didn't like that at all, so we took it out ourselves - I said 'I give up! I will try and eat'." As Anna had medical training they were able to stay at home for this part of the treament. For the ride itself Dave has purchased a second hand motorbike off of Ebay, which is now 26 years old. He said: "It's the opposite of what I go for in a bike - smooth, reliable, quiet but it's the perfect bike for this trip." The details of the route are still being finalised, with Dave open to suggestions of places to visit along the way, which includes Swindon, Channel Tunnel, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Tasucu Ferry to Kyrenia, North Cyprus, and finally Cyprus. "It's a loose plan," he said, "I've never done anything like this before - I've never ridden a bike outside the UK! But I'm quite happy to go on my own - couldn't imagine going with someone else. I can go when I want, stop when I want, and leave when I want. I'll be

riding for 11 days, but it could be less - it could be more. I'm ever the optimist - I know it'll be harder than I think, but I'll find a way round it." As well as the ride David and Anna have other fundraising events in the pipeline. Still on the music scene as a DJ and band member of Chaos Brothers, Dave and Anna will hosting music gigs to continue their fundraising efforts. In order for the radiotherapy unit to go ahead, the Radiotherapy Appeal needs to raise £2.9 million by November this year - so far more than £2,200,000 has been raised. Through Dave's Just Giving page he and Anna have already raised more than £700 (not including gift aid). He said: "We're funding the ride ourselves - everything donated will go to Brighter Futures - but we're hoping to give to the appeal and raise awareness." Anna added: "It effects a lot of families - three members of Dave's family have cancer - but it's not the death sentence it used to be. Hopefully we'll make a difference." During his trip Dave will be posting updates via social media so that supporters can follow his journey. Audi are currently pleased to offer the really very good A3 hatchback with diesel variants so why shouldn’t the convertible version come with it too? That’s why the model featured here has the gutsy 181bhp 2.0L turbo-diesel and is none the worst for it, especially with added quattro four-wheel drive. It’s a cabriolet. The roof is mechanised and is simplicity itself to raise and lower. No hassles there then but this is Britain, where the temperature can fluctuate by twenty degrees in just a few days and you will find that the top will be up and down more often than a politician’s popularity. The A3 cabriolet is not a sports car so don’t expect thrills. It is however stable, feels safe and is pleasing to drive. Some cars that are soft-top variants of saloons or hatches can feel a little ‘loose’ thanks to the extra flex in the bodyshell created by chopping the roof off. Thankfully this motor doesn’t feel much different to the hatch. There’s plenty of grip, especially with quattro, and the car handles well when driven with a bit of brio. Overall, the Audi A3 cabriolet is gorgeous to look at, built to a high standard and fine to drive. You just have to be able to afford it.

that’s for sure. The weather, and a short ride on the bike to get some provisions for a BBQ on Bank Holiday Monday, got me thinking about Britain’s climate and how it really is perfect for cycling. Invariably, it’s very rarely REALLY cold. You know, the sort of cold that they get in places like Canada where clothes to wear for a walk to school have a minimum temperature rating that is essentially warning you not to wear it if the temperature is less than the rated one as your feet might

fall off. It’s rarely (almost never) that hot that people can’t function without air conditioning. You know, how it gets in to the 40s in Southern Spain and North Africa for example. With the summer temperatures around 20 degrees in the UK, that’s perfect for cycling. You’re not going to dissolve in a flood of your own sweat unless you’re seriously racing. Even in the winter, you’re not going to freeze if you’ve got less than a 15-tog duvet wrapped around your seven base layers. Despite the

biggest thing that we all love to moan about ie the rain, it doesn’t actually rain that much in the UK. We’re somewhere around the 70th wettest country in the world and while this wasn’t a particularly scientific study, someone cycling 20 minutes to work a day would, on average, get rained on fewer than 20 times a year. But there’s always a coat available – and in this country they come with a waterproof rating not a frost-bite warning. Enjoy your summer of cycling while it lasts.

Recipe: Brussels sprouts & pancetta pasta with sage & roast garlic cream Roasting garlic gives it a sweet, caramelised flavour that suits this dish, but it does take a little time, so you might as well roast several heads and save some for other dishes. If you’re short of time, just add a couple of crushed or finely chopped garlic cloves towards the end of the onion cooking time. We’ve gone for a spelt pasta because we like its nutty flavour alongside the sweet garlic sauce, but any pasta will do. 1 whole garlic bulb 200ml double cream 1 tbsp olive or sunflower oil 250g pancetta or streaky bacon, diced 1 onion, very finely sliced 6–8 sage leaves, finely shredded small glass of white wine (optional) 400g dried spelt or other pasta 500g Brussels sprouts, outer

leaves removed, halved or quartered, depending on size (keep a little of the core intact so the pieces hold together) 4 tbsp Parmesan, finely grated salt and black pepper First, roast your garlic. Heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4 and follow the method on page 284. Once cooked, leave to cool slightly, then separate the cloves and squeeze the

skin to release the flesh. Save half for another day and mix the remainder with the cream. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a frying pan, add the pancetta and fry, stirring now and then, to brown it. Remove to a plate with a slotted spoon. Add a splash more oil if the pan seems dry, lower the heat, add the onion and fry very gently for 10 minutes until softened. Stir now and

then to stop it catching. Add the pancetta and sage to the onion. Turn up the heat and stir for 2 minutes. If using the wine, add it now and let it reduce for a couple of minutes, then add the garlic cream and let it bubble away for a couple more minutes. Meanwhile, put two pans of salted water on to boil. While the onion and pancetta are cooking, add the pasta to one pan of boiling water and cook according to the packet instructions. Drain, reserving a little of the pasta cooking water. Meanwhile, blanch the Brussels sprouts in the other pan for 3–4 minutes, depending on size. Drain. Stir half the Parmesan into the sauce, then toss in the cooked pasta and sprouts, adding a little reserved pasta water to thin the sauce if needed. The Ridge Bar & Grill at Shaw Ridge Leisure Park, opened for business early in 2017. I had heard good things about the restaurant and was keen to pay a visit, with my colleagues, for a working ‘power lunch’. We were shown to our seats by polite and attentive staff who offered drinks and got the ball rolling on the menu front. Running my finger down the low key typewritten menu I worked my way through the variations on the theme of burger. The Ridge boasts that all of the steak burgers are locally sourced (without specifying) and weigh in at 6oz. Also on offer are hot dogs, chicken burgers, ribs and various versions of fries – from

sweet potato to cheesy. I was briefly tempted by The Dirty Dog’ (blue cheese, bacon, spring onions) but the pulled pork bun won out in the end, with its promise of slow and low cooked pork, pickles, slaw and fries – because I was literally (not literally) starving. My companions opted for The Breakfast Burger – which was: “It was a heart attack on a plate, in a good way! It was a different meal in every bite,

egg, sausages, beans, bacon. Just what the doctor ordered.” And The Chilli Beef: “A hotdog with chilli on top which soaked into the bread. Delicious. There was a nice spice to it. It didn’t taste cheap which you can get with hotdogs sometimes – I was pleasantly surprised.” As for my pulled pork, I have to say that it was a tender and flavoursome thing of beauty. And the fries were pulling their

weight also. If you care deeply about decor, you might find the interior a little underwhelming and noticeably cheap. Even though the Ridge is a relative newcomer to Shaw Ridge, it was already beginning to feel a little tired – which is a shame because the other building blocks of this great restaurant are all in place – food, service, drinks and location. Perhaps the owners should look at a makeover to inject a little more atmosphere into the place – because if they get this right, The Ridge has bags of potential to build on its growing reputation. A close-up exhibition focused in on New College photography students last month as they exhibited their end of year show. The exhibition, held at artsite's Number Nine Gallery, showcased the OCR Level 3 Diploma Photography class's final projects. Mary Gale, the class's Course Leader, said: "From the last two years we've hopefully set them upto become self-initiative to enable them to stand on their own two feet. "The exhibition is a chance for students to present work in their specialism - it shows great diversity and incredible talent. I'm very proud of them - they're all my favourite." The exhibition diplayed a range of work from city scapes, wildlife, and fashion. During their two year course the students have worked with both

film and digital photography, as well as setting up their own websites to display their portfolio. Mary added: "We try and encourage them to be as professional as apossible to attract people to their work. "In class we try and give students a wide range of skills to become more confident as photographers - then it's up to them where they want to go next. "We're very open to knowing what the student wants and supporting them to the best of our ability." Also in attendance was Rachel Davis, a former New College photogrpahy student who recently won The UK Picture of the Year award. Mary Gale was previously one of her teachers.
