Swindon’s Town Centre, is not alone in having to rapidly adapt and overcome a host of economic and social challenges that threaten the highstreet as the hub of the community. Growing economic uncertainty, radically changing shopping habits, and fierce competition both from within the town and further afield have focussed the minds of those in charge of shaping the response to these factors on the urgent need for creative solutions. One of the key players in steering Swindon through these choppy waters in the years ahead is Di Powell, the Chief Executive of inSwindon BID:

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a businessled initiative, funded by its members. They pay a levy which is based on the rateable value of their property. When there’s an appetite to set up a BID then there is a ballot that’s formed within a predefined geographical area and the businesses vote on whether they want that BID or not, based on a business plan. “We work really closely with Swindon Borough Council as a strategic partner and we manage the public realm on their behalf. It’s important to say what’s within our gift to change and what isn’t.” Di explained that key town centre stakeholders include Swindon Borough Council, First Investments which owns the Brunel and Aberdeen Life which owns the Parade and Regent Circus. Drawing together these various groups and encouraging greater partnership and sharing best practice is one of the key roles of inSwindon BID which represents the interests of 4

almost 500 different town centre businesses. We will deal locally with the Brunel Centre manager and the Parade and the Regent Circus managers and their marketing teams as well, so we are literally talking as a whole about the town centre. We can’t set policy and we don’t make planning decisions we certainly can’t affect what’s happening in the highstreets across the UK or locally. But we can play a big part in adapting locally to these challenges. Perception is the key word for me - the perception of the town centre really concerns me and we work really hard to try and change that perception in terms of what the BID does and the strategic partners because we don’t want people slating the town. Yes we do have some empty units, but if you look at Havelock Street, it is completely full with no empty units there and it’s full of all independent retailers. Our
vacancy rate is below national average. We should celebrate what we have got and shine a torch on the things that are really great and positive about our town. One of the major resources that our businesses value is our street team. We have four street team ambassadors. They are the eyes and ears of the town centre working extremely closely with businesses, with the local authority, the police. Their role is ambassadorial - they are on hand to help visitors to the town. They carry out a patrol every morning to ensure that the town centre is welcoming and safe for shoppers And they are there to support our businesses in the town and to look out for anything that might need attention, it could be a cracked paving slab or a bench that needs cleaning up. It’s only a small team but they do an amazing job - one that largely goes unseen. Our street team ambassadors operate a radio which gives them direct contact between
the businesses and ourselves it’s sharing that intelligence - it really helps drive down crime in the high street - a lot of it is prevention so deterring thefts. We live and work here but having our dedicated street team out there provides that visible deterrent and I think in terms of the success they have had in terms of dealing with antisocial behaviour - our street team know these individuals and however you want to phrase it, they do build up a relationship with those street drinkers, homeless people. We are very often a conduit to helping those homeless people and signposting them to appropriate services. We also have taxi marshalls who work on a Friday and Saturday night - they are an extension of our street team and their job is to get people safely into a taxi and home. We also have a caretaker and while the majority of the town centre is the responsibility of the council, we can provide a top up service though the week as we have a caretaker who works part time. You will regularly see him cleaning the benches and litter picking and removing the smaller pieces of graffiti. We work closely with the police - we suggested that they set up a community policing hub on a temporary basis last year. They loved the idea and it was so successful that they are going to bring it back. The idea was to bring into use some of the empty units - to have a regular police presence as part of community engagement. I think it’s no secret that local councils up and down the country are finding it tough - they are finding that their reserves are diminished because of the strains from adult social care - which is 80 percent being paid by our local authority. It’s really tough for them to try to balance their

budgets. The face of the high street is changing and that’s not going to change any time soon. Decisions need to be taken at the level of local government in terms of creating a level playing field. It’s fair to say that while the highstreet is paying the rates they are, they find it challenging to compete with the likes of the Amazons and such. We don’t set business rates - rates are set by central government, the rates across the borough were reviewed in 2017 and they won’t be reviewed again for another couple of years unless the government decides that we do need this level playing field with the online stores. We are a tiny team and I think that’s something that we need to stress. There are four on the street team but we cover a 12 hour day, seven days a week. We don’t have all working every day - most of the time it’s two people working. We put on events, we engage with those members. At the moment we are working on our summer festival in August. We brought in an urban beach for the town centre last year - it proved such a hit we are bringing that back in. What we like to do is to position all the activity in the town centre. We say these are all the reasons to come to town. Connectivity is really important. We are always looking with stakeholders at how to improve the transport links with the town centre - we did have a shuttle bus a few years ago. There’s an audience that comes to Swindon from out of town and we are having ongoing conversations with the Borough Council, Network Rail, the Outlet Village and with Seven Capital, the firm behind the Snowasis development. We’ve all got a vested interest in our town - we live here, we work here, why are we not doing our best always to look at the good in the town? We all play a part, we are all using the town for one thing or another, let’s be proud of what we have.

£7.6m Action Zone plan for Railway Village revamp By Ben Fitzgerald ben@positive-media.co.uk
Ambitious plans to restore the derelict Mechanics' Institute and revitalise Swindon’s historic Railway Village have been announced by Swindon Borough Council. The five-year scheme will make use of heritage expertise and £1.6m from Historic England who will work in partnership with Swindon Borough Council and other organisations to make the most of this unique historic area. In addition to the £1.6m funding from Historic England, the scheme will attract a further £6m from the council and other sources. Speaking at the launch of the Swindon Railway Village Heritage Action Zone, Councillor Dale Heenan, cabinet member for the town centre, explained: “We are committed to visible progress at the Mechanics Institute in the next five years. If we can put forward a business case which shows how this important building can be used to generate income then everything else should quickly follow on from that.” Although the grade II listed building, in Emlyn Square, is currently in private ownership, Mr Heenan was confident that this would not prove a significant barrier to the

Work will be carried out to improve footpaths, signage and public spaces to better connect the area to the town centre. In addition to these physical works there will be a series of events, exhibitions, publications and tours to raise awareness of Swindon’s history among residents and visitors.
A dedicated project officer has already been recruited to lead the HAZ. And work is due to begin this summer to research the Railway Village and review existing conservation areas and listed buildings to inform future projects in the area. Rebecca Barrett, Regional Director for Historic England in the South West said: “Swindon has so much to be proud of, particularly the legacy of Brunel’s Great Western Railway works and village. Whilst some of its historic buildings have already been beautifully refurbished and brought back to life, there are still a number showing signs of neglect. “But with investment and imagination they can become
places for the people of Swindon to enjoy and help the town’s economy to thrive. We are looking forward to working with Swindon Borough Council and other partners, including the Mechanics’ Institution Trust, to celebrate Swindon’s remarkable heritage. “It’s about pooling resources to use heritage as a lever for regeneration. Heritage England will be investing £1.6m as part of an overall pot of £7.6m, to carry out 16 different projects in the area over five years. “This is such a hidden gem and these projects are about telling its story which is such a huge part of people’s lives in Swindon. There is a huge amount of local pride in these areas and we will be working closely with established groups such as the Mechanics Institute Trust.” The Railway Village Heritage Action Zone is one of 20 nationally. They aim to promote economic growth and improve the quality of life by breathing new life into places that are rich in heritage - unlocking their potential through grant funding and sharing of skills and expertise. Historic England is a public body that protects and champions places of historic and cultural importance.
Historic area is 'England's favourite conservation area' Swindon's historic Railway Village has been named 'England's Favourite Conservation Area' in a national competition. Members of Swindon Civic Voice gathered at the Central Community Centre in Emlyn Square to celebrate winning the competition run by their parent body Civic Voice. The historic 19th century Railway Village, was one of 249 nominations from around the country. Swindon Railway Village Conservation Area came out 6
on top when pitted against the strong contenders of Port Sunlight Conservation Area and the LIchfield City Centre Conservation Area in the final three. Swindon’s railway village was built shortly after the Great Western Railway works was established in 1841 to house workers and their families and formed the basis for a growing new community. Chair of National Civic Voice Joan Humble said: “Conservation areas are part of what makes the town what
it is. But they don’t all stay the same, they do change and a town can protect the character of them whilst at the same time recognising that they can’t be kept in aspic and every one of them has to reflect the community that they live in. “When we decided to launch England’s Favourite Conservation Area, we wanted to use it to test the enthusiasm people have for the place where they live. Volunteers thanked For National Volunteers Week (1- 7 June), the Great Western Hospital is recognising the difference that their volunteers make. GWH is supported by more than 400 volunteers who give a total of around 3,500 hours of their time a month. Volunteers support 70 different departments within the acute hospital and in local community services. A volunteer’s role may include anything from filing to feeding patients, with 61% of volunteer placement areas being patient facing roles. A number of Great Western Hospitals NHS FT volunteers will be celebrated on Friday 7 June 2019 at the Volunteer Long Service Awards. The awards ceremony is an annual event and is an opportunity to thank all of the Trust’s volunteers, as well as to acknowledge volunteers who have given long servicewith recognition for every 5 years spent as a volunteer. The major transformation of Wellington Street, connecting the railway station to the town centre, is now open to traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. The newly installed toucan crossing will be in action and all temporary road signs and temporary traffic lights will be removed. Some of the improvements made are: New, separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians. A new, raised road with contrasting surfacing and sharper road markings. A safer junction where Wellington Street meets Milford Street and Manchester Road. A new zebra crossing over Wellington Street and new toucan crossing over Milford Street. 8
Delay hit Snowasis will still become a reality

Swindon’s £270m Snowasis development has been delayed for six months. But Seven Capital, the company behind the scheme, is keen to stress that the landmark project will still go ahead. The start date delay has been blamed on difficulties in obtaining funding. A spokeswoman for the firm
said: “Seven Capital can confirm that despite current uncertainty, the project is making good progress. "We have recently agreed terms on further financing of the wider project, which, once documented, anticipated for July, will then enable us to complete detailed design for the construction of the development. "We are now anticipating the last quarter of this year to be
on site to begin the construction phase of this exciting project and are working with our partners and Swindon Borough Council on pushing forwards as quickly as possible." The company pointed to a climate of economic uncertainty, as a factor in the delays. The ambitious development is a key element in Swindon Borough Council’s economic development strategy.
Oasis pool opens following flume-tastic revamp
Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre’s Water Park has been reopened following a major threemonth refurbishment programme. On hand to open the venue was Wiltshire Swimmer of the year 2017/18 Holly Sullivan. Holly has Downs Syndrome and has represented the UK at the Downs Syndrome International Swimming Organisation's European Championships. Holly’s father Mike Sullivan said: “Holly started swimming at the Oasis when she was 4yrs old and has loved the pool ever since! After completing the Learn to Swim Programme, she
progressed into a competitive swimming club. (Swindon ASC) and is currently the Downs Syndrome Junior World Record Holder for 100m freestyle. The staff and coaches at the Oasis have been superb and instrumental to Holly’s success. She has been a regular user of the Oasis ever since.” The revamp saw the introduction of a new flume tower in the swimming pool and new slide divers, a new boiler and new pool filters, along with new showers in the changing rooms. Musical treatment
An innovative form of therapy is music to the ears of dementia patients at Great Western Hospital. Patients at GWH have benefitted from visits by a Nordoff Robbins music therapist. Nordoff Robbins is the largest independent music therapy charity in the UK, dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people with a wide range of needs. Jupiter ward is regularly visited by Gillian FarkasBlake, a local music therapist. Consultant geriatrician and clinical lead for dementia, Sarah White, said: “The clinical care we provide for patients with dementia and delirium is vitally important but sometimes, holistic approaches can enhance the quality of that care and really help a patient to feel better. We know that music can reduce agitation and lower stress levels and for individuals with dementia or delirium in an unfamiliar hospital environment, that is so important.
Lottery cash awards
Swindon’s community organisations are celebrating after being awarded more than £65,000 in National Lottery funding. The money will be distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. Headway Swindon has been awarded £6,300 to create bespoke cookbooks for survivors of brain injury. Inner Flame has been awarded £9,300 to run a programme of virtual reality courses for young people with mental health issues. Prime Theatre will use its £10,000 grant to set up ‘Inclusive Arts for Deaf Young People’, a programme of art-based activities for deaf children and young people in the town. 10

The skies above the Royal International Air Tattoo in Gloucestershire are set to turn red, white and green as the Italian Air Force returns to delight spectators with exhilarating flying displays. Flying on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July, the Italian Air Force’s Frecce Tricolori Display Team will be flying ten two-seat fighter Aermacchi MB-339-A/ PANs. Visitors can also look forward to three further flying displays from the Italian Air Force’s Typhoon, C-27J Spartan transporter and M-346 Jet Trainer. Head of Marketing for the Air Tattoo Helen Webb said: “Our friends from the Italian Air Force are once again showing fantastic support for the show and we are extremely grateful that they are providing four acts for the flying display. display is just jaw dropping!” Also in the air visitors can see the last UK display from the RAF Red Arrows before they head off on their North American tour as well as a special NATO 70th anniversary flypast. On the ground, the Air Tattoo boasts an impressive static display including the Austrian C-130K Hercules, two of the Belgian Air Force’s F-16AMs, the Hungarian Air Force’s JAS-39 Gripen and The Royal Canadian Air Force’s CP-140 Aurora and CC-139 Hercules. Elsewhere, Starchaser Industries’ Nova 2 rocket and
space technology firm Skyrora’s Black Arrow – the UK’s only rocket to successfully launch a satellite into orbit, are on display for up-close viewing in the critically-acclaimed TechnoZone®. Other showground attractions include the Activity Zone, Vintage Village and RAF Experience. The night will have a festival theme, with bright colours encouraged and a prize for the best outfit! Singer ‘Jay-Jay’ and DJ ‘D’ will get the party really started – hosted by ‘The Fabulous Miss Bridy and The Two Notes’ - with karaoke and a huge £200 raffle ensuring the countdown to Swindon & Wiltshire Pride gets off to a memorable start. This is a free event but donations on the door will be gratefully received. From knife crime to catfishing - Swindon school students get lessons in life By Claire Dukes claire@positive-media.co.uk
There’s only so much a child can learn inside a classroom, which is why primary school pupils across Swindon took a day out to learn about knife crime, catfishing and road safety. More than 1700 students from across 38 Swindon primary schools took part in the annual Junior Good Citizen scheme in June. Last month Year 5 and 6 classes from Colebrook Primary School and East Witchel Primary School got lessons in life at the Punjabi Community Centre as police officers, firemen and the Youth Offending Team took over from teaching. The multi-agency scheme, which aims to equip children with life skills as they transition from primary school to secondary school, enables children to take
part in scenarios that they might encounter later in life. This year scenarios included personal safety, dog safety, weapons awareness, internet safety and Envirocrime. Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson joined students for a session. He said: “This for me is what education is all about – it’s not just about reading, writing, taking exams and getting Ofsted passes. Education is setting you up for the rest of your life like learning about knife crime; learning about why not to carry a knife, what the odds are of you being a victim; and learning about the consequences of being with someone who is carrying a knife. "For parents and teachers today there have been many societal shifts since their own adolescence; accessibility to the internet; social interaction; and social values."
Mr Macpherson says that due to these changes not all adults will be able to guide children through all aspects of the world they’re growing up in today, but schemes like Junior Good Citizen are better equipped to communicate current issues to children which some parents may not have experienced. He said: “They’re definitely faced with different challenges and so much of it is hidden that the generation before can’t deal with it. "Parents don’t realise, or we don’t realise, that the world is constantly changing, and we see it in the way it was for us."
Mrs Timi Alabi attended the event with her Year 6 class from East Witchel Primary School. She said: “All the different sessions so far have been really enlightening and insightful. I think it’s a very good programme.” Mr Jon Souch, Year 5 and 6 Lead at Colebrook Primary School, added: “They’ve had some really thought-provoking issues to deal with and they’ve had some very sensible, mature responses and they’ve retained a lot of what we’ve done in school as well – so that was really pleasing to see.”
IMH Group withdraws from Swindon Following lengthy discussions, and in light of ongoing challenges, Swindon Clinical Commissioning Group have confirmed that Integral Medical Holdings (IMH) will withdraw from its operations in Swindon. Since September 2018, the IMH Group had been working in partnership with five GP practices – Moredon Medical Centre, Abbey Meads Medical Centre, Phoenix Surgery, Eldene Surgery and Taw Hill Medical Practice – to provide a range of consolidated back-office services, such as administration, recruitment and IT services. During this time, patients have continually raised concerns at the difficulties faced when attempting to contact their surgery and book appointments using the newly introduced single contact centre, often referred to as the Hub. A spokesperson for CGG said: "Earlier this month, the CCG issued IMH with a remedial notice, which requires
a provider to take immediate action when there is sufficient reason to believe a contract has been breached. Following a meeting of the CCG, IMH and senior clinical staff, and due to the ongoing technical issues, IMH has agreed to end its contract with the five practices." Hearing of the announcement South Swindon MP Robert Buckland said: "I have been working closely with North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson since IMH first became involved with the running of a number of surgeries in Swindon and I have shared my constituents' concerns. Well-loved chippy celebrates 50 years of serving Swindon
Sims Chippy is celebrating 50 years of Business in Swindon this year. Pete Sims first opened Sims Chippy in Thames Avenue, Green Meadow in 1969, then branched out, opening three other chip shops, Beechcroft Road Stratton St Margaret, Penhill, and Westbury. Pete’s family and fellow colleagues assisted in the management and day to day running of all four shops. Pete decided to sell up and retire in 2002, but keeping the Sims Chippy in Beechcroft Road where his son Darren took over the reins until earlier this year, when new owner Aiden Zheng

Knock out! Swindon youth project awarded £1k A leading housebuilder has selected a regional youth fitness project to receive £1,000 of community funding. Swindon Children’s Scrapstore was chosen as a winner of the Persimmon Homes Building Futures initiative which supports groups providing activities for under-18s. The Swindon Children’s Scrapstore is a registered charity and community resource centre that promotes re-use as a means of protecting the environment. Its latest project is called Scrappers boxing gym and community centre. Pauline Fletcher, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Wessex, said: “Swindon Children’s Scrapstore provides access to fitness equipment for young people in Swindon, encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle. Snowdonia trek for air ambulance Supporters of Wiltshire Air Ambulance – including Olympian Shelley Rudman – overcame torrential rain and cold temperatures on Saturday (8 June) to complete a challenge in Snowdonia National Park. The team of 13 took part in a 12 mile cycle ride around the base of Mount Snowdon before trekking to the summit. After descending down the mountain their final challenge involved kayaking in a lake and by which time the rain had stopped and the sun appeared. The sponsorship raised by the team, which currently stands at £7,200, will enable Wiltshire Air Ambulance to continue saving lives.

A new walking challenge that shows off the best of Wiltshire’s beautiful scenery will help raise money for Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice. The 26-mile Great Wiltshire Walk begins and ends at the Kings Arms pub in All Cannings on July 20. Walkers will take in landmarks including three White Horses, a hill fort, ancient defences and a stone circle, as well as stunning views. Orchid Care Home opens doors to public
A care home in North Swindon opened its doors to the public to showcase the facilities including a hair salon and dementia suite - it has to offer for prospective users. The Orchid Care Home, based in North Swindon, will be opening its doors to the public Saturday 8 June. Established in 2013 the care home currently provides 84 bedrooms, taking in service users from across Wiltshire who require general nursing care or suffer from a mental health issue - including Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The care home also provides end of care services.

Female footballers sought by club Abbeymeads Football Club is on the hunt for the next generation of female players after receiving a Grow the Game grant. The scheme, funded by The Football Association and delivered by the Football Foundation, will enable FC Abbeymeads to create a new team of budding lionesses in the U14 category. The Grow the Game scheme sees grants of £1,500 awarded to community football clubs wishing to create new teams, especially amongst under-represented groups. This year, funding was made available for clubs looking to create new female and disability football teams, which can assist towards the costs of FA coaching courses; FA league affiliation costs; referees’ fees; first aid kits; football kit and equipment. Clint Ricketts FC Abbeymeads Chairman, said: ”As a club we have been trying to increase
participation for some time, with ever increasing costs this grant has now enabled us to increase participation in the girls' game even more. We will now have two girls' teams running next season. Also with the FA and SSE's help we managed to get funding for a SSE Wildcats girls development centre for 5-11 year old girls who want to learn football in a safe and fun environment. "As a club we are working closely on increasing all aspects of the game and with 24 mixed teams, two girls' teams and an open aged team we will continue to keep growing as long as the funding and participation is there." Meet the new arrivals at Studley Grange - four raccoon dogs! Once again Studley Grange Butterfly World Craft Village & Farm Park has stepped in to provide a safe, new permanent home for unwanted animals that would otherwise have been euthanized. The animals in questions are four Tanuki also commonly known as Raccoon dogs. There are two neutered males and two females, called Kobe, Bandit, Igloo and Niko. Tanuki became popular exotic pets a few years ago, like the Raccoon and many other mammals. Tanuki are wild animals that require specialist care by experienced keepers. Unfortunately a lot of Tanuki did not receive this care in domestic situations, resulting in a number escaping their enclosures or being released
by owners who no longer wished to care for them or did not understand how to. In February 2018 Tanuki joined the invasive species list and can no longer be bred or sold in the U.K. This meant that a lot of owners could no longer keep them. In the wild Tanuki are
indigenous to East Asia and are not related to the Raccoon but are actually part of the canine family. Their natural habitat is woodland areas and marsh land. Lucky for Kobe, Bandit, Igloo and Niko they came to Studley Grange and have settled in really well.
They have a natural enclosure with plenty of long grass to hide and play in as well as trees. Studley Grange Butterfly World, Craft Village and Farm Park, is a great day out for all the family. Not only can you see the Tanuki in our zoo area, you can also explore the farm park, and see the many beautiful butterflies in our tropical butterfly houses. Swindon firm produce first biodegradable blister pack A UK specialist supplier of packaging to the pharmaceutical, medical and healthcare industries has developed the world’s first plastic blister packs that are biodegradable when exposed to water or landfill. A blister pack that maintains the integrity of the pills or food supplements it protects, yet is able to biodegrade rapidly after use, has been the Holy Grail of the pharmaceutical and nutritional industries for many years. Heightened awareness of the global threat of non-degradable plastics has made the search for a solution even more pressing, as drug manufacturers, governments and consumers become more conscious of the long-term detrimental effects that waste plastic is having on the environment. Wasdell Group has announced the solution it has developed can be supplied at no extra cost to its customers. companies do not only perform less well, but also come at substantial additional cost to their customers. Following years of trials, Wasdell Group’s R & D division has produced blister packs that protect the drugs or nutrients from contact with oxygen and moisture and prevent contamination by odour and microbial attack, while allowing the packaging to degrade after use. Unlike products that are manufactured using oxodegradable additives, the Wasdell blister packs are 100 per cent shelf stable, yet are 96 per cent biodegradable when placed in an aerobic or anaerobic environment, waste water or marine water. Wasdell has achieved this by employing a unique additive that can break down PVC/ DC. Normally, plastics that are impermeable to gas and moisture degrade very slowly when placed in active microbial environments, but Wasdell’s additive enables microbes
that come into contact with it to secrete acids that consume the plastic, converting the PVC/DC into methane, carbon dioxide, biomass and water in a far shorter space of time than other plastics – within five to ten years. Wasdell’s biodegradable plastic additive works within a three-tiered system, which allows it to be fine-tuned for pharmaceutical and nutritional companies’ individual requirements while maximising the potential for degradation. Trials have shown that the treated film is able to biodegrade in landfill, aerobic digestion systems and aerobic facilities. The blister packs also contain compostable laminated paper similar to that used for some perishable food products, making the entire product biodegradable. Wasdell group Chairman Martin Tedham says the development is one of the most significant in the pharmaceutical and health
care industries’ drive to reduce production of damaging plastic waste. “The healthcare, nutritional and pharmaceutical industries are very mindful of the fact that there is a need to reduce the use of plastics that may take many years to degrade, but their challenge has been to find a material that will maintain the quality and shelflife of their pills,” says Martin Tedham. “We have been working on this development in collaboration with specialist suppliers from the US and Asia, and are delighted that the trials have demonstrated that the additive in the blister packs has rendered them almost entirely biodegradable. "This will mean that in the future patients and customers will be confident knowing that their use of blister packs, which are an essential packaging format for a huge range of pills and supplements globally, is not having a detrimental effect on the planet.”

Nationwide's headquarters in Pipers Way was packed to the rafters last month as the business community gathered to hear the 'Big sponsorship of the year-long Idea' for the town from campaign. Switch on to Swindon. DigiTech is a strong and Switch on to Swindon (SOTS) was formed a couple of years ago with council backing, to entice businesses to the town as well as changing perceptions from without and within. At an event last year in the Carriageworks the campaign announced that it would be putting together a 'Big Idea' to firmly put the town on the map and it was unveiled at the glamorous event at Nationwide. And the 'Big Idea' is Tech Swindon - a concept put together by Swindon marketing firm Bravedog, that will be celebrating the town as a centre for tech and innovation. The Tech Swindon campaign will support and promote the growing digi-tech community and is a SOTS branded project. The project will run a series of meet-up events for startups, micros, SMES and larger companies, which either provide digi-tech products and services or are reliant on it for business. The year-long campaign will culminate in a two-day summit in spring 2020 with high-profile speakers from Swindon and around the world, in venues across the town, welcoming up to 1,000 visitors a day. The aim of the campaign is to enhance Swindon’s digitech cluster and showcase its capability to attract inward investment and a pipeline of additional skilled staff. On the night, Nationwide confirmed its support and
growing industry and Swindon boasts the UK’s 3rd most productive tech sector with over 2,800 companies in Swindon and Wiltshire delivering digitech products and services and over 25,000 companies reliant on digi-tech to operate. Jenny Groves, Chair of Switch On To Swindon said: “Both local businesses and new investors will benefit from the TechSwindon focus on attracting and developing additional talent, alongside the timely recent announcement of Institute of Technology funding for Swindon College and partners.” Also at the event, over 400 delegates heard a business in the community round up from Swindon 105.5 and were wowed by demonstrations from the digi-tech community including a drone display. How Switch on to Swindon finally switched on to Swindon by embracing tech
At a glamorous event in the pretty swanky Nationwide building Switch on to Swindon finally found its mojo - with a bit of tech help. Link editor Jamie Hill gives his two cents worth... As usual at these networking events, there were biztype people everywhere, Champagne in hand, ready to smalltalk everybody with no prisoners taken. Anyone who was anyone in the Swindon business community was there. This time last year at the last SOTS event, held at the Carriageworks, the announcement was that they were looking for the 'Big Idea' to put Swindon on the map. Afterwards I had written a pretty scathing opinion piece about how the campaign had failed to Switch on to Swindon as it had forgotten to include one of its original raisons d'etre - the actual community of the town - and had instead turned into a business back-slapping exercise. The piece was met with flak from some but praise from others. So as I stood with my mini fish and chips (delicious by the way) I was a bit apprehensive about what I was about to see. One of the many speakers was the wonderful Shirley Ludford, who runs Swindon 105.5. Everything she said was perfect outlining how businesses and the community work together through their CSR programmes
(that's Corporate Social Responsibility to you and me). But the main bit was left to Kris Talikowski - the SOTS mainstay who runs The Core in Old Town. So what's the 'Big Idea' Kris? Well in essence the big idea is Tech Swindon - a project to celebrate the town as a centre of tech and innovation. With the help of nifty drones Kris really drove the point home. I was impressed. This is something that Swindon genuinely has to shout about. We are damn good at that tech stuff. And with a good network of like-minded firms in the vicinity Swindon is also somewhere that ideas can be cultivated and grown. As a concept SOTS might have lost some of its original community-minded good intentions but having fully embraced business it looks like this will make a real difference in getting new companies to our town, which means more employment as well as more CSR - something that all of our communities can benefit from. So we are completely behind this plan and the people of Swindon should also get behind it. We might not know our apps from our elbows but Swindon is already a place with one foot in the future and Tech Swindon could be the best way of capitalising on this and shouting it from the rooftops. Important changes to your waste and recycling collection are coming The trial collection of separate food waste recycling is one of a number of important changes to the Council’s waste and recycling services that will be rolled out over the coming months. The changes are being introduced as part of the Council’s new waste strategy, which outlines its commitment to protecting the environment and managing the borough’s waste and recycling responsibly. Residents are encouraged to support the Council’s efforts to reduce the amount of waste households produce and increase the amount Swindon recycles for the benefit of the borough and the wider environment. From September 2019, selected areas of the borough will be trialling the separate, weekly collection of food waste for recycling. This service will be trialled during 2019/20. In recent engagement feedback, more than 70 per cent of residents asked for a food waste recycling service. The government has also outlined the need for local authorities to offer a separate food waste collection in its national strategy ‘Our waste, our resources: a strategy for
England’. Households are therefore encouraged to use this new service once it is available to them. Residents will be able to check if they are included in the trial by visiting the Council’s website. Food waste bins will be delivered to the trial areas from mid-July. If a resident receives a food bin they will be responsible for keeping it safe until the start of their collection in September. Residents in trial areas will receive more information in August to explain how to make the most of the service. All trial areas will be announced in July. In addition to food waste recycling, general recycling will also become compulsory for all Swindon households from 1 August 2019. Residents will be expected to present all of their recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, cans, glass bottles and jars into recycling boxes instead of the black wheelie bin/blue bag. From August, the Council’s Waste Wardens will be working with residents who put recyclable materials in their black wheelie bin/blue bag, providing helpful advice and, where necessary, encouraging participation with formal enforcement.
Following the lead of many other Councils, a £7 charge for replacement recycling boxes will be introduced on the 1 August. Last year the Council spent £90,000 supplying new or replacement boxes and the ongoing charge is designed to cover the annual cost. New homes in the borough will continue to be provided with two free of charge boxes as standard. Residents should clearly mark their boxes to aid identification by the collection crews. Box lids should be securely closed before being left out for collection. Councillor Maureen Penny, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment, said: “Our waste strategy will help Swindon to achieve the best possible environmental and economic outcomes over the
next decade. “This year we will be trialling a new food waste collection, which we hope residents will get involved with. “We will also be introducing compulsory recycling which will provide the opportunity for our waste wardens to support those who are struggling to recycle and help people feel more confident in their recycling abilities. “We have high aspirations for the future of waste reduction and recycling in Swindon and we are determined to introduce new initiatives that will enable us to become as sustainable as possible.” To find further information on the strategy please visit swindon.gov.uk/recycling. Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr David Renard (Con) As you may have noticed from reading the article above, some important changes will be made to your waste and recycling services over the coming months. This is in direct response to our new waste strategy, which is committed to protecting our environment. In recent years we have reduced the amount of waste we send to landfill to about five per cent, but despite this our recycling rates have fallen from previous levels and we have some tough 22
government targets we need to reach in the years ahead. In short, we need to recycle more and produce less waste and we all have a part to play. When we carried out our waste strategy consultation last year a high percentage of people said they would welcome separate food waste recycling, so we will be trialling such a weekly service from 2 September in certain parts of the Borough. We will be announcing the trial areas this month and food waste bins will be delivered to those households taking part
from mid-July. You may also have received a letter from the council with a handy recycling
guide, outlining how general recycling will also become compulsory for all households from 1 August. A charge for replacement recycling boxes will also be brought in to cover the annual cost of new or replacement boxes. We have had a fantastic response from people to our recycling campaign and I would like to thank everyone who is now taking the time to separate their recycling. It is making a big difference to our crews. Please keep up the good work and keep recycling for Swindon.

Marios Trattoria: still the best Italian restaurant in Old Town? History will never know if the gin which the Moonrakers pulled from the pond was ever stored in the tunnel below 7 Wood Street, but some is now; along with a selection of other tipples to go with an excellent menu, as this is the home of the long-established Mario’s Trattoria. Established in 1972, the restaurant has had four owners, and many staff have moved on to create some of the best Italian food outlets in the area. I first went to Mario’s in the mid-seventies, when I worked for an American company in Swindon, and it was then I discovered the traditional welcome that accompanies your arrival in the cellar restaurant; it’s the Italian exuberance I have experienced in the country itself. When I worked out of my Old Town office, we would enjoy a lunchtime in Mario’s, where Peroni and pasta were the order of the day. Seated at a table in one of the inglenooks which form the
cellar walls, we ordered a Cinzano and lemonade, and the Italian staple; a Peroni. The starter I went for was the Pesce Diavolo, Squid and prawns. My wife, the birthday girl, ordered just a main course of veal with Parma Ham. For my main, I chose the Medaglione Al Pepe Verde fillet steak, accompanied by a selection of vegetables; including the infamous Mario’s petits pois with ham. This dish has been a staple on the menu
since it opened, and is one I always look forward to. Mario’s has always had a good house wine, and although I chose fillet steak I went for the fruity white house wine. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection, and the rich sauce completed the round mix of flavours, to combine the richness of the steak. Birthday girl’s veal and Parma ham displayed the same qualities, setting us up nicely for the sweet course of
homemade panna cotta. My wife described it wonderfully as: “Cream with cream and caramel, but who worries?” Mario’s is not the cheapest restaurant in town, but the high quality and personal service make it a location for that special meal in the evening. They also have a new lunchtime menu which offers pizza and pasta with vegetarian and gluten-free options for a modest £7. Much more civilised than those heady days in the eighties, where lunchtime exuberances were common. The gin from the Moonrakers story may have been the staple commodity stored in those cellars in the long distant past, but now, in that cellar, rounding off the night with a coffee laced with a Tia Maria, the evening was complete. A poetry column by Maurice Spillane: leaving echoes behind Along Came this Italian Poet. The thing is, she didn’t know how gifted a poet she was until she came to Swindon! Altea Narici is from Italy and here to improve her English. She plays the cello professionally and has composed pieces for it so, in terms of creativity, she is well on her way. We had a lovely evening recently discussing all the usual topics until poetry dominated when I introduced her to Seamus Heaney. We read a few of his wellknown poems, out-loud of course, and we were away. Several days later I received a poem from Altea called “The Reason I Write.” It’s very much from the heart of a musician. I often say to budding poets that the written word will outlast them, 26
as heritage for their kin and offspring. You can see that Altea’s line “writing is leaving echoes behind” particularly resonated for me. My catch up with Silence. I get the soul off the wood while it still vibrates, lead it back fingertips to toes hoping it will be at ease, and stay. Writing is leaving echoes behind, and step out of the cave, cry in the open air -I’m still alive!And hugging such thought on my chest, muffling the drum under the shallow skin,
we are child, teddy bear and pen sliding swiftly from page into dream.

Peugeot Rifter MPV: spacious family transport
Motorists seem to have lost interest in Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV) lately as buyers flock to the altar of the ubiquitous crossover/SUV models. It’s shame, because the latest of the few remaining have real merit and none more so than the new Peugeot Rifter. No, it’s not sleek or especially stylish and it has van-like proportions, but for families planning long holiday journeys to new and exciting locations, the Peugeot Rifter is a car that would prove to be both functional, practical and reliable. The name is a vast improvement on its predecessor, the ‘Partner Tepee’ (what were they thinking?) and if the Peugeot badge doesn’t float your boat then the Citroen Berlingo or the Vauxhall Combo Life are more or less the same thing, although the Rifter is a tad more expensive.
For this writer though, it’s the Peugeot i-cockpit that swings it with the driver-focussed set-up. The interior is smart and has all the mod cons we expect these days. About The Peugeot Rifter In fact, given its priorities, the Rifter’s not a bad looking motor. The surfaces are nicely sculpted and contoured, disguising the van origins and the front end gets the ‘family face’ that all brands seem to be doing these days. In this way the casual onlooker knows
it’s a Peugeot. This is possibly the ideal family car if you can get past the inclination to dismiss MPV’s as unexciting. This car is all about convenience; there’s sliding rear doors for ease of access, roof bars, back seats that fold easily and variously and around the back there’s a vast, cavern-like boot with a full size rear tailgate. With a choice of five or seven seats, family-sized versatility is assured. The Peugeot Rifter gets the small steering wheel common
to the brand, a feature that has proved popular with drivers. The dashboard is plain but very well laid out with a big central 8” touchscreen. A real plus point is the ride; it is really comfortable and cruising at speed is surprisingly quiet. Sure, the Rifter wallows a bit when cornering but catching the apex is not its forte. Not quick by any means, the Stop/Start BlueHDi 127bhp 1.5L turbo-diesel can still crack on when needed with the sprint to 62mph dealt with in just over ten seconds. Other diesels are available. There are petrol engines on offer as well but, in this case, the diesel is the better choice with 60mpg assured for the abstemious driver. The Peugeot Rifter is highly recommended especially when an all-purpose car fits the bill. Practically perfect practicality. Geoff Maxted

I have passed up so many opportunities and whether that’s because I didn’t have the confidence, or thought I hadn’t got what it takes, it always led me to the same conclusion that ‘those things don’t happen to me’ – and it’s a subject I discussed at length with Paul Lappin and Jon Buckett. As a music producer, and the owner of Earthworm Recording Studio, Jon Buckett has worked with musicians of all ages, backgrounds and abilities – many of which are, or have been, unsigned. He says it’s “bizarre” having witnessed the amount of talent walk into his studio not knowing what they’re capable of - or getting the backing they need. It was with this in mind that last year Jon launched a free competition, For the Song, aimed at giving unsigned artists and bands the opportunity to record and release an original song they’ve written. It was in January, whilst on his way to an open mic night in Bristol, that Paul Lappin got the call to say that his song Life Was Good won the judges over. “My mum saw the ad, cut it out and posted it to me in France. She said, ‘What have you got to lose?’ My whole life went upside down,” says Paul. And, as we’re sat chatting over a pint, it soon became clear why. Paul, 48, bought his first instrument – an electric guitar – just five years ago. Although having been a self-taught musician since his early years Paul’s life went off in a series of other directions from Bristol, - as a graphic designer - then Canada, - hitting the slopes as a snowboard instructor for 28 swindonlink.com n July 2019 NW July artwork.indd 28
eight years - to living in the South of France as an artist for the last three years. Until now Paul had never stepped foot inside a recording studio, and since February he and Jon have been in the studio working with the likes of Simple Minds’ Rob Brian, getting ready to officially release Life Was Good in July. Paul tells me, “I never owned an instrument until five years ago. I didn’t have a tambourine, so I was using a salt shaker, and I was playing drums on pillows. It sounds ridiculous now [laughs]! I sent the demo off and I didn’t really think anything of it. It’s a confidence thing, isn’t it? You don’t want to push your songs on people. “The one thing I’ve missed is collaborating, – it’s nice to have other opinions – and since working with Jon at Earthworm that’s been on tap. We’ve had amazing musicians come in and say, ‘Why don’t you try this?’ I’ve absolutely loved that. “It’s been a really nice working relationship – Jon gets where I’m coming from, he understands the tone and feel of the song and he’s able to take it in a direction sympathetic to that. It still feels like very much my song, but Jon’s given it the push that it needed. Also, he’s got access to some absolutely fantastic musicians – all these people, who are way beyond anything that I could do, are suddenly able to give the song some really good edge. The whole thing has been brilliant, and it’s just gone up and up ever since.” Paul always had it in his mind that he would one day record and release his music but never had the technology or support system around him to make it happen. surprise the singer-songwriter is now ready to release his first single. He tells me, “It was one of the first songs I ever wrote - I’m so excited for people to hear it! As it’s gone on, I’ve become more excited because you hear it being built professionally and suddenly this little idea that I had in my living room is sounding amazing. I’ve always wanted this song to sound big, – I like that big sound that many bands are able to get – and I could never do it at home so I couldn’t quite get the idea I had in my head out. “It’s got quite a catchy chorus, I think [laughs]! It’s a nice uplifting and positive song - a summery song that people can sing-along to. I think it’s an instantly accessible pop song, so I hope that people latch onto that and get it on their playlist – or buy a CD!” Jon adds, “Musically, it’s not something that's doing well at the moment. There are comparable things around that are there to make people feel good, but Paul’s music doesn’t ask anything of you - his music is very generous in that way.” It’s both extraordinary and uplifting listening to Paul and Jon - a few months ago they were complete strangers, and
Paul was sauntering around Saint-Chinian not knowing that a song he wrote more than a decade ago would be something remarkable to the ears of a music producer. Jon says, “It feels like it’s part of something bigger. I’m really excited about it – I think it’s a great song. You can spend years hunting for the right song, and it turns out it was the first one.” The music industry, or any industry for that matter, can often feel so inaccessible, - you don’t have the right connections, the right technology or the confidence - and it took 48 years for Paul to get his break. Unfortunately, this is the reason some people will stop pursuing their aspirations - some people think ‘those things don’t happen to me’. “You don’t have to be a virtuoso to do something cool,” Jon says "if you feel like you want to do something, and you feel like you’ve got something to say just do it!” Since hitting Earthworm Recording Studio Paul has moved back to his hometown, Swindon, and is now working on two albums. Last month Mfor Festival introduced a second stage at this year's event to be hosted by Swindon 105.5. Taking place at Lydiard Park, 27 July, the community radio station have confirmed that The Oxymora, Phoebe Maddison, Billy and Louie, Julie Scott’s Academy, Myriam Adams, Kerenza Clements, Abstraction Engine, Jordan Pearce, Tayler McNally and Ryan Webb will be joining the line-up this

It's time to get back in the saddle - here's how! By Becky Cox: Swindon Cycle Campaign
Are you tempted to dust off your bike this summer and try cycling? It’s a fantastic, fun way to get active and explore your local area and there are plenty of opportunities this summer! Swindon Borough Council is supporting the ‘Let’s Ride’ initiative, a partnership between HSBC and British Cycling to get more people on bikes. Let’s Ride is focused on giving everyone the opportunity to get in the saddle, no matter your age, ability or fitness level. These rides are not speed, rather a social way to explore and get a bit of exercise. You don’t need an expensive bike to get involved (I personally think my 30-year-old Raleigh Caprice, a hand-me-down from my mother in law is the best!). If you haven’t cycled for a while or are looking to learn pop along to the County Ground Athletics track on a Friday morning between 10 and 12. There’s a free drop in session for anyone who needs
a bit more support getting in the saddle. Bikes and helmets are avaliable and the friendly, supportive instructors will ensure you’re looked after. There’s also a range of adapted bikes available, meaning there’s other options, including tricycles, recumbents, tandems and even bikes which fit wheelchairs. There are also free confidence courses being held throughout the summer in both Shrivenham and Wroughton. All set now? Check out the Let’s Ride website for a range of free led rides organised throughout the summer, from 3 miles to 30. Shorter rides tend to be flatter and mainly on traffic-free cycle paths whilst the longer ones start to venture onto the quiet country lanes. There are rides available most weekends as well as during the week so head to the website and sign up to one now! From the author of Secret Swindon comes a second installment of discovering the town's gems, but this time focusing on its buildings. From the mundane to the grand, and from council estates to cafes, local blogger Angela Atkinson hopes to offer a different perspective on Swindon's heritage and current culture. She says, "What I’ve taken from it is to try and tell aspects of Swindon’s story in a selection of its buildings. It’s been difficult to choose. You can expect some obvious suspects, but hopefully some surprises. I’ve tried to represent as many areas of Swindon as I reasonably can." Due for release in August Angela hopes the book will be insighful for those who don't think of the town as a place of creativity and culture. She adds, "A lot of people from outside of Swindon moving into the town won’t be aware of the heritage and historical value within a lot of the town’s buildings. Since moving from Bradford to Swindon in the 1990s, Nicola Cornick has never looked back – aside from when she’s been unearthing "fascinating stories and colourful characters" from Swindon's pastime. It was with this in mind that Nicola was inspired to write The Woman in the Lake. “My books tend to focus on those real-life characters in history, particularly women, who don’t often feature in the history books but still have a story to tell,” says Nicola. “In the case of Swindon I wanted to write about Lady Diana St John who was a professional artist at a time when it was very unusual for aristocratic women to work. She lived at Lydiard Park and drew a lot of inspiration for her work from Swindon and her story inspired the character of Isabella. I’m hoping to surprise people with a different perspective on Swindon’s past and how it influences our present and future. I hope readers both from Swindon and elsewhere will enjoy the way that the book draws on Swindon history and celebrates the town and its past, as well as finding the story gripping and entertaining!”
Hidden Stories is not about Swindon itself, but it aims to support the people living here. This "playfully illustrated graphic novel" from arts charity Root Experience is telling the stories of people living with conditions that you can't see from the outside - conditions such as anxiety, autism, diabetes and chronic fatigue syndrome. This book wants to give a voice to those people. Dr Helen Johnson, senior lecturer in social science at Brighton University, wrote the book’s foreword. She said: "I have seen first-hand, the power of the arts to connect with people, to transform the ways in which those who live with a wide range of invisible conditions understand their experiences, helping them to cope when they are struggling and empowering them to speak out. These are voices that need to be heard; stories that come from a few, but speak to so very many different people’s lives." Root Experience has published Hidden Stories to "to hear and understand those voices" and donate to local community projects in Swindon and across the South West.

Darryl said: “The ability to identify and accurately date photographs is crucial in local history and genealogical research. "As our research progressed it was fascinating to see the explosion of popularity in photography during the Victorian period – and the unusual set of characters who went into the photography business. "As we dug further, many unusual stories came to light. Who would have guessed that Victorian photographers once had to dive out of the way of charging cattle before they crashed into the windows of McIlroy’s department store!”
