Red Oaks Primary School pupils get on CYCLE REPAIRS their bikes to help Harry FREE When the pupils and teachers at Red Oaks Primary School raise money for one of their own don’t be shocked if they tell you to get on your bike. Or your scooter for that matter. The primary school managed to raise a heap of cash through a ‘sponsored wheel’ to help eightyear-old pupil Harry Flynn who has cerebral palsy. The children all did three or four laps of the playground using scooters and bikes as part of the sponsored wheel. Year 4 pupil Harry undergoes intensive physical therapy at the Footsteps Centre near Abingdon and the funds that are being raised help pay for the three-week long intensive therapy courses. Headteacher Rachel Surch said: “All the kids had a fantastic time. We had scooters, bikes and flickers. It was a great atmosphere. “Harry loved every minute of it and for the children it was all about

Friends call on Swindon Council to honour Lydiard Park promises Swindon Borough Council will be appointing marketing experts to look for organisations interested in running Lydiard Park so that it can reduce the council’s annual £450,000 subsidy. But the chair of the Friends of Lydiard Park says promises made at a full council meeting in April 2014 about the future of Lydiard Park have been broken. Exploring commercial opportunities for Lydiard Park is part of the council’s Leisure and Culture Commissioning Change Programme, which has seen the borough’s leisure and golf facilities being leased to commercially driven organisations. Parts of Lydiard Park are already leased to tenants. Jungle Parc uses an area close to the visitor centre for a tree top adventure facility and the conference centre with accommodation next to Lydiard House has been leased to external providers for many years. But, as reported in the October Link, current tenants Chartridge have not had their tenancy renewed and have bought nearby Marsh Farm Hotel in Royal Wootton Bassett to continue their business. The council also hires out the

events field for commercial activities and puts on attractions in front of the house. Cabinet member Cllr Garry Perkins said: “Lydiard is one of Swindon’s jewels and we want to keep it that way, but our financial position dictates that we have to reduce the park’s current subsidy. “If we are going to do that, we need to make more use of the park from a commercial point of view and we need to find out from the market what opportunities exist. “This isn’t about transferring ownership of the park or selling it off. Moves to create parish councils across Swindon Swindon Borough Council have unveiled plans to look into creating new parish councils to tackle local issues more effectively. They are to include a review of existing parish boundaries and whether new councils should be formed in areas currently without. Parish councils would take control of services such as play area maintenance, street cleaning and area landscaping under the propositions. Combined with a potential annual tax rise of 1.9 per cent, these changes could bring about an increase to the precept regarding parish councils. This could, by 2018, result in an increase to band D properties of up to £140 per year. This has led to local citizens speaking out against the proposals. Martin Wicks said: “This is the borough lessening the flak when implementing another round of swingeing cuts. Economically it makes no sense. Providing services at the borough level allows economies of scale which cannot operate at the parish level.” However, Toby Elliott, cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Communities, believes the proposals have merit. He said:

Council backs down on broadband masts after residents protest Plans by Swindon Borough Council to put up superfast broadband 4G masts in North Swindon have hit a stumbling block after a mass protest by residents. This comes at the same time that the chances of even faster fibre broadband being installed in the area took one step closer to reality after positive talks with Virgin Media. The masts are part of a £2m scheme by the council to increase superfast broadband coverage from 80 per cent to 99.4 per cent of households and businesses in Swindon by 2016. The wireless solution plan, which is being put in place by UKB Networks, will see at least 16 strategically placed streetmasts and monopoles erected throughout the borough to transmit broadband signals to each household. But after planning applications were submitted for masts in Oakhurst and Haydon End, concerned residents protested to the council about some of the proposed locations. Peter Taylor, of Torun Way, started a petition with other parents against the location of a mast in the grounds of Orchid Vale Primary School. He said: “Swindon’s a big town so why locate these masts at a school when there’s plenty of other places these masts could go. “At the moment it is not known whether these masts cause any health problems for children but until we do know, why locate a mast at a school? It would be much better to err on the side of caution and locate these masts away from residential areas.” The council has backed down in the face of objections. A spokesman said: “The decision to withdraw the planning applications for the masts was taken following feedback from the local community. “Further consideration will now be given to mast sites which will provide superfast broadband to those properties in North Swindon with currently no access to the service. The council remains committed to increasing access for Swindon households and businesses by next summer.”

Glory School pupils with bags of books and pens Swindon based children’s writer, lecturer and translator Dr Christine Tipper, is thanking all who have helped put Glory School in Nepal, back on its feet. She’s been supporting and visiting the school, north of the capital Kathmandu, for almost five years but April’s devastating earthquake that hit the country put it in a parlous state. “The disruption was enormous,” said Christine. “The majority of the 240 pupils live in brick and mud houses which were reduced to mounds of rubble. They lost their homes, clothes and food, some lost family members and friends. “The staff have done an enormous amount to support families and

the community around the school, although they too were greatly impacted. Many parents lost their income to pay school fees which in turn makes employing the teachers difficult. “Education is the way to give Nepalese children a future and Glory School is special because boys and girls are given equal opportunities to flourish and shine.” A collection at the Swindon Festival of Literature in May and JustGiving page organised by Christine raised enough money to provide 84 children with text books, notebooks and pens. Swindon dental donation makes an impact in Ukraine The delivery of another dental caravan to Ukraine by dentist, Brendon Ball, from Freshbrook Dental Practice with his wife Natasha, made the national news, alongside the ongoing conflict with Russian backed nationalists in the east of the country. It was the third delivery of mobile dental surgeries since Brendon’s first trip in 1999 and to his surprise Brendon was presented with the Shevchenko Medal by the Mayor of Cherkassy, a civic award for outstanding contribution to society. “I was really chuffed that our assistance to the Cherkassy area was considered worthy of recognition,” said Brendon. “Everybody we met was delighted that we were still wanting to help Ukraine; the welcome was even greater than our previous visits because the country is under such great pressure from the war with the Russian backed separatists.” The dental units are used to

provide treatment and medical advice in remote communities across the Cherkassy region, which is the size of Wales, although the two caravans can only be used for part of the year because the roads are impassable for towed vehicles during the winter months. Brendon added: “Our long standing contact Dr Ivan Kovelenko worked out that the aid from our charity Smile Menders is equivalent to £300,000 and has made it possible to examine about 58,000 people and treat over 21,000 including 7,000 children, since 1999, free of charge. “When I first went to Ukraine the approach was to drill, fill or extract, often without painkillers. Now the mobile units are both treatment and oral hygiene advice centres, and the principles of teaching people to look after their teeth is part of the Ukraine health service. Swindon to Calais Solidarity giving out goods last month The next aid run from Swindon to Calais to help refugees will take place in early November and organisers are calling for people to keep up the donations. Darrell Edwards, of Swindon to Calais Solidarity, said: “We’re planning to go every two weeks so in November we’d either be going on 8 November or 15 November. “The stuff that is needed over there is constantly changing so please keep an eye on our Facebook page so you can see what donations would help the most.” The group went out at the end of September and 11 October with one more trip planned on 24 October. Volunteer Alison Thompson took her teenage son on the Calais aid run. She said: “It was an incredible, life-changing experience, not

least for my son, who started the day as an anxious nerdy teenager but became a man who showed compassion, empathy, problemsolving and leadership skills. “Whatever your political view on immigration, every person has the right to food, warmth and shelter they are basic human needs.” The Calais Jungle is the nickname given to a series of camps in the vicinity of Calais, where migrants live while they attempt to enter the United Kingdom. The refugees are a mix of people from Darfur, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Eritrea and other troubled areas of the world. Making a difference Volunteers provide vital support to organisations in Swindon and the people they work with. Here are groups seeking help. Swindon Ten to Eighteen Project (STEP) are looking for positive adult role models (over 18s) to work alongside project workers in small groups of 10 to 18 year olds with a therapeutic aim of tackling issues such as anger management, building self-esteem or improving communication skills. Activities include art, drama or cooking and sessions run on weekday evenings, Saturdays and some school holidays. Victim Support is looking for people to support those who have been victims and witnesses of crime. This can either be in the community or within the judicial system. Full training is provided to undertake this vital role Tenants Voice. If you are a Swindon Council housing tenant, there are opportunities to get involved with panels that meet to help maintain and improve housing conditions, amenities and the environment, as well as being a street representative.

Age UK Wiltshire is looking for volunteer community support workers to help people live in their own homes for as long as possible. This is done through home visiting, telephone befriending, undertaking shopping, or helping people take part in social activities. Christmas Care is recruiting volunteers. The project provides a warm, safe and welcoming environment for the homeless and lonely over the festive period. You can help set up the project or spend time with guests, cook meals or help with cleaning. A minimum commitment of four hours is requested. Open evening for charities to give out surplus food from supermarkets

SOFEA volunteers at the Fareshare warehouse in Didcot An organisation that specialises in giving out supermarket food surpluses to good causes will be extending its operations to Swindon at an open evening on 12 November, 7pm to 9pm. South Oxfordshire Food and Education Alliance (SOFEA) is inviting charities in Swindon to this event at their warehouse in Didcot, to launch its food delivery services in the Swindon area. SOFEA have been operating for just over a year and takes in-date, high quality supermarket surpluses that would otherwise go to landfill, and redistributes them to other local charities. These charities often help feed those in food poverty, or

who struggle to feed themselves. This operation happens in their FareShare warehouse in Didcot. Uniquely, SOFEA runs an employability programme for young people alongside these operations, utilising the warehouse as credible work experience. In its first year alone, SOFEA has shipped over 12 tonnes of rescued food to charities in Oxfordshire and beyond. Charities can sign up with SOFEA to receive this food at a highly discounted rate, often saving them up to 70 per cent of their food costs. Thamesdown Drive Extension moves one step closer

Cars back up on Thamesdown Drive during rush hour The proposal for the extension of Thamesdown Drive to Great Western Way will be going before the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Economic Partnership (LEP) this month. Dale Heenan, cabinet member for Sustainability and Transport, said: “The work on an outline business case for the Thamesdown Drive extension and improvements to surrounding roads like Akers Way and Mead Way is nearly finished. We have made slow but steady progress to crack this 20 year problem for Swindon. “Earlier this week, Robert Buckland MP, cllr David Renard and I met with a transport minister to put forward our case and it was as positive as it could be. The council is taking this road seriously and

is looking at every possible way to fund it, and has submitted it as a priority for the Local Enterprise Partnership. There remains a lot to do but I am hopeful of good news in the coming months.” Once it has gone through LEP the proposal will be submitted to Central Government. South Swindon MP Robert Buckland said: “I am glad that further preparatory work has now been completed by the Council’s highways consultants and am working closely with cllrs Renard and Heenan in order to make further progress and will be working with the Department of Transport as well. The extension is already listed within the LEP’s future plans and so I urge everyone to get fully behind this project and give it the priority that it deserves.”

Fire station marks 25 years

The expansion of Swindon to the west and eventually to the north meant that Wiltshire Fire & Rescue needed a new station to locate fire appliances to be able to respond quickly. Andy Collins, or Tonto, as he’s known in the fire service, is the last of the original staff still based in the West Swindon station. He became a firefighter in January 1990 when it was being built. At the time crews serving the west were based in the town centre and at night the appliance was parked in the mobile library bay at Link Centre. Westlea station, off Mead Way, officially opened in September that year. After 25 years Andy said the nature of fighting fires had changed. “Back then many fires were caused by people smoking at home. There are fewer house fires but they can be more intense because of double glazing and timber framed construction. It also means there is greater danger of structural collapse, especially if householders have made changes or drilled holes. The fire safety regulation integrity when a building was put up can be compromised if oxygen can be sucked into wall cavities.” Andy said station operations

The firefighters are on-call at home during night shifts so all live closeby to enable quick response. “Road traffic accidents are also different now,” said Andy. “Cars are more safely designed with airbags and crumple zones. The materials are a lot tougher which is good, but our tools can struggle to cut through them. “And as a reflection of modern times, Westlea is the base for the Wiltshire IRU, or Instant Response Unit, ready for emergencies such as terrorist attacks. It means the kind of training we do has changed a lot so we’re ready if there is a major incident.”

Lydiard Park students using musical instruments rather than pens for a day Year 7 students at Lydiard Park Academy put down their pens on 7 October to get stuck into a national literacy initiative conceived by the Communication Trust. No Pens Day Wednesday encouraged schools to focus on speaking and listening activities by developing and enhancing speech, language and communication skills. Project organiser Vicky Buchalik said: “During the course of the day students were set a variety of tasks including story telling, drama skills, and making music, tone and rhyme

using natural and human percussion instruments. “There was a lot of team activity involved to work out how to convey what they meant without being able to write things down. Police apology makes national news An innocent discussion by foundation stage children at Haydonleigh Primary School with local police officers on the sound a patrol car makes hit the national headlines in late September. The PCSOs were on a meet and greet with the youngest children as part of the school’s ‘people who help us’ topic and teachers asked the youngsters whether the siren was a woo woo or neh nah. The

officers obligingly set off the siren several times to assist with the debate before a vote was held. PCSO Emma Harryman later explained why the siren had sounded so much on the North Swindon Neighbourhood Police Team Facebook page, apologising for the concern some people may have felt about it. BBC Radio Wiltshire were quick to follow it up with a live interview on 25 September which in turn sparked national media attention. The vote was decisive in favour of the woo-woo noise. Headteacher Frances Billenge said: “We are all just amazed how the story took off from an explanation on Facebook. We were inundated with enquiries by national media.”

Treehouse launched to offer support to bereaved children A new charity has been launched to bring together several groups and services which support children and young people under 25 bereaved by the death of a parent. Set up as a partnership with support from national charity Child Bereavement UK and an anonymous start-up donation of £35,000, Wiltshire Treehouse aims to develop a county-wide service. It will be entirely dependent on grants and fundraising in order to offer a free service to families. To achieve this, £300,000 will have to be raised annually. At the launch at the Salt Way Centre in Middleleaze in early September, Ann Rowland, director of Child Bereavement UK, said: “Every day 111 children are bereaved which equates to over 40,000 annually. Children need help to make sense of the tragedy over the long term, particularly at transition moments as they grow up. They tell us how confused and lost they are, but it’s so important children meet others who experience the same feeling. “So many families are unable to access the right kind of support so it’s thrilling to see Wiltshire Treehouse launched.”

Children sell out concert to promote happy songs CD

Year 3 teacher Vicky Keane explained that the first recording with the help of Pop Connections took place in 2010 when the present Year 6 pupils were in reception. “We’ve been singing those songs ever since and they are just as popular, but we thought it was time to freshen our repertoire. “With the help of Faith, the St Francis PTA, we were able to ask

Pop Connections to come back with new lively songs to make another recording; it has been another fantastic experience. “The songs have a strong social, cultural and moral message which embrace our values at St Francis.” The CD was on sale at a concert for parents at Isambard Community School on 14 October which saw 400 children perform the six songs. American visitors connect with their Swindon roots Celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the St John polyptych in St Mary’s Church, Lydiard Park continued in October with a family reunion the like of which has never been seen before at Lydiard House, writes Fran Bevan. Forty two American descendents of the St John family gathered at the Palladian mansion by invitation of Palmer Hamilton, a lawyer from Mobile, Alabama and Prior of the United States Order of St. John. He can trace his ancestry back through the Tucker family, who founded Bermuda, to Sir Richard St George, the uncle of Sir John St John, 1st Baronet who commissioned the St John polyptych, installed in the church on 20 July 1615. Referring to his visit to Lydiard last year Palmer said: “I travelled to Swindon with my daughter and we were so well received by the Friends of Lydiard Park and the congregation of St Mary’s. I said I would organise an event for family members to learn more about our connection with Lydiard Park at the source.” Paul Gardner, chair of St Mary’s Building and Conservation Appeal, opened the multi panelled memorial

Speakers included Canon Brian Carne who talked about his fascination with the polyptych and his detailed research over 50 years. Peter O’Donoghue, York Herald, talked about the St George dynasty of Heralds, in particular Sir Richard St George who married Elizabeth St John and was responsible for compiling the St John genealogy on the outer panels of the memorial. Palmer said: “The talks have been so well done, we’ve all learnt so much or seen our existing knowledge reinforced. Over the years I’ve written hundreds of pages about the family tree but listening to descriptions about the family from others always provides fascinating insights.” A Choral Evensong at St Mary’s was followed by a reception in the house hosted by the Friends of

Lydiard Park. This is the third visit Palmer has made to the St John ancestral home. He said: “We’ve always known about Lydiard Park as the St John family country residence; coming here in 2009 was like a pilgrimage. Up to now we’ve been coming down [from London] for the day. On the next occasion I’d like to stay in the area because of the welcome we are always given.” Fundraising for essential conservation of St Mary’s continues and more than £186,000 has now been secured. This includes all the funds required for the urgent conservation work on the 18th Century Reredos which begins in early November. The refined and refocused bid of about £790,000 for the larger conservation project was submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund in August, with a decision expected in December.

Unsung heroine Suffragette Edith New celebrated Women in Swindon rallied by Frances Bevan of Swindon Heritage and her daughter Leah, to mark the life of Edith New, the unsung heroine from the town who was at the forefront of the often violent campaign a century ago to secure universal suffrage. The workshops, talks and a rally on 25 October coincided with the release of the film Suffragette, starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep. Edith New moved to London in the early 1900s and got involved with the militant wing of the women’s suffrage movement. She was involved in many direct actions including breaking windows at 10 Downing Street for which she was given two months’ hard labour in Holloway Prison. In the film, covering the increasing frustration at the lack of response to the Suffragette campaign from 1908 and 1913, Helena Bonham Carter plays a character called Edith, scripted as an amalgamation of several activists. Leah Bevan-Haines said: “The movement was successful in gaining the vote for women aged over 30 in 1918. Full voting rights were not achieved until 1928. “There is controversy and

X-Factor band Union J will get Swindon into the festive spirit Christmas is commonly referred to as ‘that special time of year’, but this year Swindon’s Christmas Lights Switch On is set to be even more special with musical guests Union J headlining the big event, exclusively announced by inSwindon. The chart topping boy band first appeared on ITV’s X Factor in 2013 and have gone on to have two top 10 albums and supported The Vamps on tour. The band also recently revealed they are working on a third album. Famous engines coming home in November Two celebrated locomotives will make a timely return to Swindon as part of celebrations to mark the birth of the town’s railway works. King George V (KGV) and City of Truro will make the long journey by road on low loaders to Swindon between 9 and 13 November, returning on loan from the worldclass National Collection housed at the National Railway Museum in York. They will take pride of place in

Steam, Museum of the Great Western Railway, in advance of the 175 celebrations in 2016 which mark the beginning of modern Swindon. In order to accommodate both locomotives, current loans Lode Star and the Diesel Railcar will go back to the National Railway Museum. was the GWR’s most powerful 4-6-0 engine. It was shipped to the USA in August 1927 to feature in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad centenary celebrations. So impressed were the Americans that a commemorative bell was presented and mounted on the locomotive. City of Truro, designed by George Jackson Churchward, was built at Swindon Works in 1903. She was the first British locomotive to travel in excess of 100 miles per hour on 9 May 1904, one of the world’s first to do so. Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Council’s cabinet member for STEAM, said: “I’m really chuffed the National Railway Museum has allowed us to exchange the locomotives and bring them home

for our Swindon175 celebrations. “They will take pride of place in STEAM as a tribute to all those who worked in the town’s railway works.” New exhibitions will also open at Steam to mark the anniversary. They will be complemented by a range of events organised by schools and community groups which reflect the achievements of the whole town over the last 175 years. Visit town’s new time-travelling mural

A new community mural which looks at Swindon during the 175 years since the Great Western Railway came to the town has been created on the Cambria Bridge Road embankment in the town centre. In pre-railway times the road passed over the 18th Century canal. In the early 1980s Swindon artist Ken White painted a mural depicting life next to it. The new 70 metre artwork by local artists Ed Russell and James Habgood of The Visual Drop depicts key people, buildings and organisations, linked together by an old style police box at one end and the Dr Who Tardis at the other. It has been produced in collaboration with members of The Railway Kids youth club run by the Mechanics’ Institution Trust, and in partnership with Swindon Council. Trust community worker Hannah Parry said: “The wall overlooking the play area was in a poor condition and we were asked to come up with a new mural. While it was being repaired this summer Ed and James talked to club members about the places and the people who have made Swindon special.” Everybody they talked to asked for Dr Who’s police box to be kept. Ken originally painted it because of the shape and size of the pillar at the end of the wall, but it gave Ed and James the storyline for their work. At one end is the police box with a dedication to Ken, at the other is the Tardis spinning through space. In between, represented by a milky way of time and space are images of Swindon. Hannah said: “Ed and James came up with the great idea of time travel with their collaborator Justin Smythe to tell the story of Swindon through the ages. The youth club members loved their design.” James said it was really important to feature Ken on the wall. “As the artist who made Swindon famous for its murals in the 70s and 80s, many of which are Swindon’s forefathers IK Brunel sadly no longer here, we wanted to show and Daniel Gooch our appreciation for his work.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service is warning people not to take risks with fireworks and have issued the following advice. • Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take out one at a time. • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on each firework. Read them by torchlight – NEVER use a naked flame. • Light fireworks at arm’s length using a safety firework lighter or fuse wick. • Stand back after lighting. • NEVER go back to a firework once lit – it may go off in your face. • Keep a bucket of water handy. • Used fireworks should be collected after the display with care. Douse with water, bury or place in a metal container. • Keep children under control. • Keep pets indoors. Bonfires present additional hazards when it’s dark. It is advised to build them far away from any buildings and inspect them properly to make sure that they are stable and won’t collapse outwards. For further safety advice visit www.wiltsfire.gov.uk

Swindon Robins held their last ever meet at the current Abbey Stadium before a new stadium is built over the winter. Robins manager Alun Rossiter has paid tribute to everyone involved with the hugely successful Abbey farewell meeting. A bumper crowd packed the Blunsdon terraces to see a variety of racing, interviews with club legends and a spectacular pyrotechnics display. He said: “It was a great send-off

for the Abbey as we know it before the club starts a bright new future at the new track next year. “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, it was normal admission prices so nobody could complain about value for money, the weather was with us and it was just a great occasion. “My thanks go to everyone who came together to make the event such a success. The state-of-the-art trampoline park will use specialist US equipment The anticipated opening of The Link Centre’s new extreme trampoline park has been pushed back from November to January 2016. GLL, which manages the centre under its Better brand, closed the main sports hall in June to make way for the new facility. It will be a series of interconnected safety padded trampolines which can be used by up to 100 people at a time. The project is part of a £2million investment in the centre and will include newly created, dedicated birthday party rooms and a refurbished café. A GLL spokesperson said: “The launch has now been pushed back until January 2016 but we’re confident that it’ll be worth the

wait. “The team have been working hard to secure the latest, state-of-the-art equipment from specialist suppliers in America and have designed a facility that really will be up to date – hence things have taken a little longer than anticipated. “We’ve had a fantastic response on the recruitment front and interviews for the ten permanent positions took place in early October. A Christmas cracker of an event takes place on Sunday 6 December in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Swindon and North Wiltshire Breast Cancer Now. Youngsters at Abbey Meads Primary School could hardly have been accused of ‘not going to Specsavers’ as the bright sun reflected off their hi-vis waistcoats when almost 100 children, staff and parents took part in a walk to school on Wednesday 14 October. Starting at St Andrew's Ridge the crocodile led by headteacher Bob Buckley used footpath routes to reach the school at Abbey Meads Centre. Travel ambassador coordinator and Year 3 teacher Cassia Popplewell said: “It was a lovely bright Autumn morning for families who came along to promote healthy lifestyles and care for the environment. We’d like to thank Specsavers who donated the waistcoats as part of their ‘See & Be Seen’ campaign. Special thanks to school travel advisor Jane Deeley for organising Specsavers’ involvement.”

Mad March helpers clock up over 2,500 hours of volunteering Hare raising but true, people who organise the Mad March Hare runs in West Swindon have notched up 2,500 hours of volunteering to ensure a safe, fun and colourful event. In the last 8 years people of all ages and abilities have raised more than £87,000 for Breast Cancer Now. Organisers are now looking for more volunteers to leap forward to help make the ninth MMH on 20 March 2016 another memorable event. Starting and finishing at Lydiard Park Academy, the 5k and 10k

routes take in footpaths around West Swindon with a loop through Lydiard Park. There are lots of ways to get involved on the day – registering participants, traffic marshalling or directing and motivating runners and walkers. Many volunteers return year after year. Jo Milsom is a stalwart, who plans to help out once again. She said: “It’s a pleasure to be a Mad March Hare marshall. My partner Annette and I have done the run ourselves and always appreciated the help given by the volunteers on the way round. It is of

On the road to safer driving for teens

By Camellia Sinclair Swindon’s successful Young Drivers Course, for pre-provisional teens aged between 14 and 17 years, will return to Swindon New College from 10am on Sunday 29 November. Young people will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of modern, dual-controlled cars in one-to-one sessions with dedicated, Swindon-based, driving instructors. This new course follows its successful introduction in September in which a class of young drivers drove safely and successfully; completing slaloms, reversing, starting, stopping, carrying out parking manoeuvres, driving around roundabouts and completing emergency stops. It teaches younger teenagers about the essential lessons of road safety. Chairperson of Swindon Young Drivers, Jo Silvester, said, “Our

long-term aim is to be able to offer this opportunity to even younger children, learning to drive in a safe, off-road, environment and learning valuable life-skills which will hopefully stay with them for the rest of their life.” As well as the driving sessions, the course also includes demonstrations from visiting representatives from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, the local Police and Honest Truth AA Patrol. At the scheme’s first event, parents also took part in road safety activities involving Beer Goggles and completed reaction exercises which warned of the dangers of using a mobile whilst driving. The Police also brought along a damaged car that had been involved in a fatal accident to bring home the risks of driving dangerously. Spaces are limited. The New Mazda MX5 – King Of The B-Road

Geoff Maxted of Drivewrite.co.uk takes the latest Mazda MX5 for a spin Do you remember your first time? That’s right, the first time you stepped into a car with a fully loaded licence and experienced the joys of the open road? Well, no matter how sated with driving you may now be, it is still possible to rediscover those halcyon days by simply treating yourself to the new Mazda MX5. This diminutive soft-top has been around in various iterations since 1989 and Mazda have been true to the simple formula of a frontengined, rear-wheel drive sports car since then. It is fair to say that the previous model was beginning to

look a tad lardy and so the Japanese company have returned to their ‘Kodo – Soul of Motion’ design philosophy and produced a car that is smaller, lighter and better looking than its predecessor. Two four-cylinder engines are on offer with 1.5 litres (47mpg) and 2.0 litres (40mpg) and, surprisingly, it is the smaller motor that delivers the most pleasure. It isn’t fast, with the benchmark 62mph arriving in a modest 8.3 seconds but it feels fast and that’s the important thing. The driving position is laid back and relaxed and the sensation of speed is as a result of the driver sitting

low to the ground. Around the B-roads of Wiltshire the ride was exhilarating. With just 129bhp, the 1.5L MX-5 (prices start from £18,500; model as tested £23,105 including special paint), undercuts the 158bhp 2.0L by around £800 depending on options. However, it does without a strut brace, limited-slip differential and – in 2.0 Sport trim – Bilstein dampers and sports suspension fitted to the more aggressive and faster bigger brother. On our county’s lovely back roads it is, as our American cousins insist on saying, a sweet ride. Swindon dog rescue charity needs help Founded in 2012, SNDogs is a rescue service which places dogs from Swindon’s dog pound, rescue centres or from owners whose circumstances change, in foster homes, rather than kennels. The charity provides temporary foster care in emergencies if the owner goes into hospital. It is run entirely by volunteers who promote, fundraise, attend events, homecheck, foster and walk the dogs looking for homes. There’s also a Crafty Ladies group who produce a delicious range of home-made cakes and inexpensive items sold at fundraising events.

Donations and more volunteers are needed to sustain SNDogs which can be found on Facebook. Each dog looking for a loving home also has a Facebook page. Looking out for hippos in Zimbabwe

Light reading for Sarah and Dave Chilvers in darkest Africa Sarah and David Chilvers from Peatmoor, well known in Swindon for their efforts to help rescued Asiatic moonbears in China and Vietnam, spent two weeks in September visiting the Turgwe Hippo Trust in Zimbabwe. British citizen Karen Paolillo has dedicated the last 20 years to protecting and improving the lives of hippos living in the Turqwe River in the south east of the country, close to the borders with South Africa and Mozambique. Sarah first made contact with Karen in 2010 and has become a keen supporter, helping to print and mail an annual calendar to supporters around the world. She said: “Karen’s story is quite amazing. She was a trained safari guide and in 1992 was building a home above the river which was drying up from the worst drought in living memory. She decided to rescue the last 13 surviving hippos and had to provide over a ton of food a night, and lay a water pipeline to a newly constructed cement pan from the nearest water source over 18 kilometres away. “Since then 47 calves have been born and there are several family groups along her part of the river,

but Karen has had to deal with huge challenges, not least the ever present threat of violence from poachers who set horrendous snares on the land around the hippo reserve, as well as the impact of human habitation on the river environment which supports a wide range of wildlife such as elephants, antelope, baboons and vervet monkeys. “Thousands of visitors have experienced the unique bond that Karen has formed with ‘her’ hippos, each with its own name. She is now assisted by game scouts who remove hundreds of snares each year. To date not one hippo has been poached. Karen welcomes paying visitors and hands-on volunteers. Mountain trekkers Ian Lawrence, Dan Hopkins and Becky Prince Three friends from Wanborough have set themselves the challenge of climbing Africa’s highest mountain in August 2016 to raise money and awareness of Retinitis Pigmentosa, a genetically inherited disease - which currently has no known cure or treatment. RP destroys the parts of the eye which gives peripheral vision leaving the sufferer with deteriorating tunnel eyesight. It’s the most common form of inherited blindness in the world and next year will be the fortieth anniversary since the charity RP Fighting Blindness was founded. The Kilimanjaro climb is being organised by Ian Lawrence whose good friend Daniel Hopkins has had RP since 1996. He explained: “I was referred to a consultant who said I had 15 per cent peripheral

vision. You need 80 per cent so immediately he said I couldn’t drive any longer which meant I lost my job at a company in Bicester.” Although he now runs two successful construction supply companies, Dan struggles in crowded environments and is virtually blind in the dark and has recently been re-registered as SSI (severely sight impaired). Ian said: “We’ve already received massive support for our trek next year; so many people realise that sight is such a fundamental requirement. This challenge will help RP Fighting Blindness continue its work to find a cure for both Dan and all those suffering from this cruel disease. For many months the current Leader of Swindon Council, councillor David Renard, has been citing the mantra of his predecessor, telling Swindon residents how they must prepare for change in the way local government provides council services. He and his colleagues have been at great pains to point out the budget issues facing the council which will result in fewer public services delivered with reduced frequency, and in some cases, provided by a third party, charity or a not for profit organisation.   We have already seen the demise of some services and reductions in others, coupled with organisational changes such as the hiving off of leisure facilities and the news that Lydiard House and park may well be next in line. The council is right to ask whether it is right to provide £450,000 of support to a single facility like Lydiard, but what strikes me is

how casually cllr Renard and his colleagues seem to forget these services are paid for by way of taxation and that surely it is for the people to decide whether or not the subsidy should continue. In his most recent announcement the leader advises that not only will the people have to make do with less despite paying more, but the checks and balances provided by their representatives will be brought to an end as democratically elected councillors are forced to release their hold on what he refers to as “some of the formal controls that they have enjoyed so long”. What this really means is a significant change in the role of elected representatives with a reduction in their powers which frankly will only be welcomed by the very people who need more overseeing and not less. Indeed it is the result of the introduction of the cabinet system of controlling council affairs about ten years ago

Christmas Bookings Councillor David Renard whose vision for Swindon Council’s future could lead to fewer checks and balances according to Des Morgan that many poor decisions have been made affecting our town. I can imagine the Euclid Street officers delighted at the thought that pesky councillors would no longer be able to instruct them, demanding answers to questions and challenging their ineptitude or overseeing the delivery of services. Cllr Renard states “where once members could issue instructions, we will now only be able to invite or request support from partners.”  Surely it is a legitimate question to ask – is this what the electorate expect our 57 local councillors to become – petitioners for favours and beggars for help? We are yet to be told what will

become of the elite cabinet but in telling the public what is going to happen as opposed to consulting on a proposal, cllr Renard appears to have ignored the fact that he has no formal mandate to make such significant changes to a system which relies on the will of the people being through the ballot box. Sometimes the only way to cut through the fog is to enlist the support of an elected councillor. Clearly the decision to neuter the only group capable of an effective internal challenge to the officer cadre will enable the executive to indulge themselves in a binge of unfettered power which I am not persuaded will serve the town well.
