Mayor’s curry night for three charities The Mayor of Swindon Michael Bray, right, is holding a curry night in aid of his nominated charities at Miah, Shaw Ridge - and he wants as many readers as possible to join him. This year he is raising money for Cruse Bereavement Care, Swindon Guide Dogs and Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis. Call for caring Christmas volunteers Swindon Christmas Care will again provide temporary shelter for homeless and lonely people and those in need over the Christmas period from 12noon on Monday 24 December until Friday 28 December, 11am, at Queen’s Drive Methodist Church Hall, Park South. Volunteers and shift leaders are needed to help run the project. Preparation meetings take place at

Curry cashback nights booking 2013 The twice weekly charity nights at the Bombay Lounge restaurant, Peatmoor Village Centre, are going to continue into a ﬁfth year. Since they launched in early 2008 over £50,000 has been raised for charities, schools and community groups. Meet a councillor in the West The West Swindon Forum takes place in the library at Link Centre on Monday 12 November, 7pm. Refreshments will be available from 6.30pm. The forum is a meeting point between residents and councillors representing the three wards covering the area.

Opponents told the inspector Katie Peerless that the impact on Swindon’s infrastructure, particularly the road network, from an unplanned development would be considerable, whilst Wiltshire residents expressed concern that the town should remain within its existing boundary. Shaw resident Kevin Fisher, who spoke effectively at the public enquiry said: “The Secretary of State has two decisions to make, one is whether to approve the Wiltshire Council core strategy, the other is whether to approve or reject the Ridgeway Farm appeal. “To approve the former means he cannot approve Ridgeway Farm since such a development is outside of the strategy. To reject the former would make a mockery of the Localism Act by, in effect, dictating to local councils the content of their strategy and returning the system to the centralised process used by the previous government. “I remain convinced of the arguments put forward during the appeal against development on Ridgeway Farm and cannot see how it can be approved. “However, the government may well decide that development would help the economy by boosting construction GDP numbers. In my opinion it would simply slow developments of existing approved sites and not be of any benefit to the economy. “In summary the decision could go either way but at least we as a community can be sure we could not have done more Wiltshire councillor Jacqui Lay said: “We can’t second guess how Ridgeway Farm will go but I hope that the excellent representations

locally to ensure we can have our voices heard.” South Swindon MP Robert Buckland added that the groundswell of opposition to this proposal should not be ignored. ”Swindon and Wiltshire Councils, local MPs and councillors together with community groups have all opposed development at Ridgeway Farm because it represents an unwelcome additional burden on our local environment and infrastructure. I hope that the Planning Inspector will reject this appeal.”

Children in Need choir comes to Steam

Swindon’s Steam Museum will be the focus for BBC South West’s Children in Need output on Friday 16 November. Fifteen regions are forming community choirs to sing Simon & Garfunkel’s classic Bridge over Troubled Water at 8pm on the night. Lydiard Park Academy and eight West Swindon primary schools will form the core of the 170 strong South West choir, which will include signing children from two Bristol schools for the deaf. Three thousand free tickets were made available from 22 October to visit Steam to enjoy BBC entertainment and attractions and to hear the choir. Quarter of a century service in two West schools which became one

Two highly regarded members of staff at Millbrook Primary School, Freshbrook were taken aback on 12 October when they were called forward in an assembly to be presented with bouquets by the Mayor of Swindon and school governor Michael Bray for their commitment over 25 years at Freshbrook Primary and Windmill Hill Primary Schools which combined in 2007 as Millbrook.

They are also keen to clarify the council’s position in negotiations with a supermarket chain - believed to be Waitrose - and to be consulted about where it might be built. Writing in the Wroughton Monthly Parish magazine, campaign spokesperson Amanda Woodhead said: “The M4 tunnel option would be the worst outcome for our village as it would encourage traffic south of the motorway and open up the likelihood of further development on Swindon Borough owned farmland adjacent to Blooms garden centre, putting extra pressure on our high accident-risk rural roads.” A Waitrose press officer denied there were any plans to build in the Swindon area, although he stressed that the supermarket would welcome the opportunity to open a branch in the town. Amanda commented: “The question of Waitrose in Wichelstowe is the worst kept secret in town. Our concerns are purely around where the supermarket will be sited, and what the impact will be on our village of increased traffic on Mill Lane and Wharf Road.”

Uplands after school club in need of cash to stay open

Popular out of school provision which offers crafts, discos, film nights and cooking for severely disabled youngsters at Uplands School in North Swindon is facing the threat of closure as £30,000 annual funding has been withdrawn, leaving school staff appealing to businesses to help keep it running. Deputy head Andy Segal set up the youth club two years ago when he first joined the school, and it proved so popular they successfully secured extra funding to run two sessions on Tuesday afternoons and evenings. However following a review of the Aiming High Short Breaks Funding in 2011 the school has had to drastically cutback after school

provision. Expressing her determination to continue to provide a youth club, Uplands headteacher Jackie Smith said: “We won’t allow the service to close completely. We have allocated funds from the school’s budget to keep the afternoon session open, but we want to offer an evening session as it feels more like a proper youth club.”

The funding is needed to pay for specialist staff to run the club, for materials and to provide transport for those families who are unable to pick up children from the North Swindon venue. Appealing for donations from private sources Jackie said: “We would very much welcome support from local businesses to keep our youth club open. If 60 companies could each offer us £500 to cover our costs we could continue to help 50 young people and their families each week.” To help contact Lorna Braid on 01793 493910. Minister receives a masterclass in international development

Pupils from Nova Hreod School demonstrated to International Development Minister Alan Duncan on 19 October how they’ve made lasting links with a school in South Africa. They described their project to learn more about life for pupils at Harold Cressy School in Cape Town, continuing a partnership that ﬁrst started in 2009. The minister also took questions from pupils about overseas aid and how it can improve the lives of some of the world’s poorest children. Having delivered the best ever GCSE results in the school's history, Lydiard Park Academy in Grange Park is proposing to apply to the Secretary of State for Education to be allowed to open a sixth form in September 2014. Parents of children at Lydiard Park Academy and also children at partner primary schools across West Swindon are being asked to give their views by 30 November. The summer 2012 exams saw pupils deliver a 75 per cent pass rate for five GCSEs at A* to C and 56 per cent five GCSEs at A* to C including English and Maths. The proposed expansion would provide for 150 places for students in Years 12 and 13 studying AS and A2 courses, along with some GCSE over the last few years. Drop-in to express options for more North school places

Swindon Council is carrying out a consultation in November to find out community preferences for providing another 60 primary school places by September 2014 to cope with the baby bulge in North Swindon. Two options are being considered: expanding Orchid Vale Primary School in Haydon End to become a two form entry school, or building a brand new single form entry school on a green field site north of Mouldon Hill Country Park, to the west of Thamesdown Drive. The author was on a national tour to launch 12 stories starring zombies, to be published in gripping installments every three months. Alison Slaven, learning resource centre manager at Nova Hreod, who organised the event said: “We’re keen for pupils to meet their writing heroes and discover what spurs them to write the books that interest young people. Darren really had them locked on to what he was saying about all the macabre characters that he writes about in his different series. “The long line of pupils waiting patiently to have a few words with Darren and have a book signed

Darren’s books are great, you can’t not read them.” Girls are quite happy to read about blood and gore as well.“I prefer horror to all the girly stuff people think we should read,” said Lauren Stepp from Highworth Warneford.

Talented artists from Year 8 and Year 9 at Isambard Community School displayed their skills to family and friends in October, demonstrating their imaginative use of paint, collage, photography and sculpture. There were some 190 pieces on show, with several pupils showing off their GCSE exam work. Ben Heath, pictured right, from Year 11 already has a grade C for Art taken in Year 9 and a B in Fine Art from Year 10, and hopes to upgrade next summer. Assistant headteacher Kirsty Carter said: “Art is extremely popular at Isambard. So many pupils opt for it that we are unable to take them all on. If we had space we could have run 11 classes rather than 10. “The quality and the range of work is very impressive.”

Tregoze teachers and pupils off to Spain

Tregoze Primary School has again been successful in its application for funding to undertake a pan-European Comenius project, involving eight other schools, from Spain, Poland, Turkey, Germany, Romania, Italy, Sweden and France. Project coordinator Sue Adkin said: “It’s a lot of hard work and planning to get nine schools to work together, but it’s so good for the children to see how other people live and work in other countries. We’re very much in the early stages of a two year journey, but it’s great that we got nearly 100 per cent approval for our application.” The ﬁrst visit will take place in November when two teachers and

two Year 6 pupils will make a trip to Madrid to meet their partners. Explaining the project’s theme Sue said: “We’re all going to be looking at how food is produced, where it comes from and how it gets to our plates. A lot of children think that food comes from the supermarket and that’s it. So we’ll be looking at how much food costs, and whether it’s better to eat locally and seasonally rather than shipping food all over the world. “Next spring we’re going to start growing and cooking our own food, and collecting recipes from all across Europe.”

The event sponsored by Hargroves Cycles attracted 225 competitors, including 57 under 12s, who rode a mile course over the ﬁelds and through the woodlands of the park. Because of the wet and cold weather competitors and spectators spent much of the day huddled together in the refreshments tent keeping warm with tea, coffee and

home made cakes - the proceeds of which were donated to the charity. “The conditions were pretty rough, the worst we’ve had for years, but people spent more money on refreshments and we raised £320 for Hop Skip & Jump,” said club member Claire Smith. Swindon-born novelist, Jenny Hilbourne, who now lives in San Francisco is running a half day workshop for writers curious to know more about publishing for print and e-books, about using social networks to promote their writing, and about the American market. the bigger picture Swindon’s long term connection with its Central American twin, Ocotal in Nicaragua, was strengthened in October with a three week visit by artist Patricio Marin, sponsored by Swindon Ocotal Link (SOL). Patricio, 31, conveyed fraternal greetings from his town to the Mayor of Swindon, met artists in the town, took in the sights of Swindon and London, and visited schools. The self taught painter spent a week at Lydiard Park Academy creating a mural and talking to pupils in Spanish. Head of languages Eileen Mochan said Patricio had enriched the life of the school. “Patricio was a great ambassador for Ocotal and a truly talented artist. The pupils were mesmerised by his work; large numbers would gather during break times and lunch to see him creating a beautiful mural. “We have all gained a wider knowledge of Nicaragua, its culture, customs, beauty and landscape. We’re willing participants in linking our academy with the secondary school in Ocotal.” Year 10 pupil Eleanor Keene said: “It’s amazing how much detail Patricio has included and it’s really cool how he’s joined the flags coming out of the steam engine and from the

What’s on in Swindon this Christmas? The festive season is just around the corner, and we are getting excited about our seasonal activity in Swindon. With plenty in the pipeline once again, it’s sure to be another cracking Christmas in the town centre. Here’s what you can look forward to: At The Brunel Enjoy a family fun day of festive celebrations and the official Brunel Christmas Light Switch-On which will be taking place on Saturday 24th November at 4pm. Plus, make sure you pay a visit to this year’s Grotto which will be opening on Saturday 24th November, situated on the top floor of The Brunel Plaza between Boots and Marks & Spencer. For a small price your child can visit Santa and his elves and receive a special gift! The Grotto will be running from Saturday 24th November - Monday 24th December. Full times and prices will be available on The Brunel website at www.thebrunel.co.uk. Festival of Light Parade On Thursday 6th December, Swindon town centre will be awash with colour and seasonal spirit as the Festival of

Light Parade returns to wow children and parents alike. At 6pm, hundreds of local school children and families will congregate at the Town Hall carrying their own homemade lanterns.

Then the procession will walk along Regent Street and through the twinkling lights of the Christmas Market in Canal Walk before arriving under the stunning 40ft Christmas Tree in Wharf Green. The Big Sing will then lead the parade into some traditional carol singing to bring what is always a magical evening to a close. Lights Switch-On The centrepiece of any town’s Christmas celebrations is its Lights Switch-On, and we’ve always put on a fantastic show in Swindon.

Cheggers is performing in the Wyvern’s production of Aladdin for the second year in a row, and is sure to be as energetic and entertaining as ever.

2010 saw a visit from Mickey Mouse and his friends, in 2011 Wharf Green was lit up by the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ video spectacular, and this time around it’s all about celebrating the country’s fantastic achievements throughout 2012.

The evening kicks off at 5pm, before we light the Christmas Lights at 7pm and the sky is illuminated by an incredible display of festive fireworks.

We’ll have visits from some of our local Torch Bearers, Olympians and Paralympians, along with specially themed performances from some of Swindon’s best local talent including The Big Sing, Swindon Dance and Ovation Dance.

The event is always well attended, so make sure you are there early to get a good spot!

inSwindon BID is a Business Improvement District (BID), set up in 2007, which promotes, manages and co-ordinates operations and events in the town centre. It is mainly funded by the retailers and other businesses within the town centre area. In February 2012 the Company was successful in a renewal to secure the future of the company for a further five-years at a vote taken on by the Business Improvement District investors. The company manages the Street Team Ambassadors, the Security Radio Network, major events and campaigns such as the Christmas Lights Switch On and Armed Forces Day, as well as providing business support and training to investors.

Some of Swindon Town’s League 2 title winning side will also be in Wharf Green enjoying the festivities along with manager Paolo Di Canio. And as if this wasn’t enough, we’ll also have a special appearance from TV legend Keith Chegwin!

Great Western Hospital is calling on people to rise to the challenge and take part in a 90 foot abseil on Saturday 8 December as part of a week of events to commemorate the tenth anniversary since it opened on 3 December 2002. The celebrations will include a carol service, time capsule burial, and the unveiling of the artwork of babies born at GWH in the last 10 years, which includes over 200 photographs sent in by the public. The money raised from the abseil will go towards the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Charitable Fund to enhance patient services. An abseil in September 2011 raised over £7,000. The club has had a connection with the country since 2005 when the community managers Clive Maguire and Jon Holloway learnt of the struggle by a Zambian team to attend a tournament in Sweden. Since then coaches have travelled to Livingstone on three occasions and built up a great rapport with community leaders and young people across the city. In September over 60 MPs, sports administrators and representatives from charities heard about the overseas development initiatives taken by Swindon and trusts associated with four other league clubs, and the Minister for Sport, Hugh Robertson MP, strongly encouraged others to build on their initiative. Andrew, from Wootton Bassett, is now keen to hear of groups in Swindon interested in building on the work started through the football club. “Anyone who has travelled through Africa, Asia and the Caribbean will know the amazing popularity of British football. Even in the most isolated villages you will find children wearing the

strips of famous English clubs. “There is huge potential to make a real difference to communities at so many levels both in the developing world and here where clubs are already doing such excellent work through their community foundations. “The footballers in Livingstone were surprised when Jon and Clive Maguire from Swindon returned there last November. Following some confusion in the community Isambard School wants to make it clear that parents are more than welcome to attend sports fixtures. In March, following a series of incidents with aggressive and abusive parents, of both Isambard pupils and opposing teams, the school imposed a requirement to have Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance to watch games. Headteacher Rachel Mattey clarified for Swindon Link that the policy had lapsed at the end of the school year, though this was not publicised for fear the problems would start up again. She said: “Isambard welcomes parent spectators at fixtures and competitions against other schools. However, there is no access to the sports pitches through the main school building which is in use and not accessible to unauthorised visitors until 6pm daily. “Parents and other visitors are asked to use the Tadpole Lane entrance to access the sports field where there is ample parking.”

An article in the June Link about applying to college in the USA to learn and play sport with a scholarship, resulted in several families contacting Nick Dodd for details. Describing the modern sport of cheerleading head coach Millie Pall said: “Cheerleading is an extreme sport with high levels of risk. But if you love being active, are a team player and are dedicated then it’s a great sport to be part of.” The club took part in sport related activities on the day the Olympic ﬂame came to Wharf Green in May. Dolphins look for paralympic talent in November Swindon Dolphins have been chosen to work with the South West Regional Amateur Swimming Association to deliver Swim Links in Swindon, an area that has lagged behind others in its provision of disability swimming. Sessions take place at Dorcan Sports Centre. On 3 and 4 November the club is running a talent identiﬁcation weekend to discover if swimmers with disabilities could progress to become paralympic competitors. The club’s Swim Links programme has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark, which recognises innovative and exceptional projects that were directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. Swindon and Sierra Leone 1 Aid worker joins Red Cross emergency team tackling cholera outbreak Former Greendown School pupil Anna Hirsch-Holland, 25, from Shaw, spent two weeks in October with a Red Cross emergency response team in Sierra Leone helping to treat people at risk. The disease which had already infected over 18,500 people resulting in 270 deaths has spread rapidly across the country with cases in all 13 districts. Anna who is based at the British Red Cross’s London HQ joined experts from the global Red Cross movement working to halt the rise in the number of people affected by the water-borne infection, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea and can kill within hours if left untreated. The team supplied health facilities with cholera kits, raising awareness of good hygiene practices, including surveillance and early detection. They were also involved in providing safe water through Anna, during a deployment to Liberia household water treatment and in April this year at a British Red Cross poject to support refugees from the Ivory rehabilitating water points.
