Last month Joy Aldred met Sue and Ian Povey of Grange Park and some of their fifteen children. Here she catches up with the Thompson triplets from Shaw who featured in The Link as pre-schoolers and later at Shaw Ridge Primary School before they moved on to Bradon Forest. Natasha, Ollie and Kat Thompson, aged 22, have always loved being a trio and doing things together, though at exam time it was everyone for themselves as inner competitive streaks took over - but with over fifty qualifications between them this has seen them in good stead. I've never resented it - we've always been friends and we still are. We hung about together and our three groups of friends were friends." Ollie added, "it was an open house, we always had people round and I liked that. We had little squabbles, perhaps the girls ganged up on me, but now we've all gone our own ways we appreciate each other more." Mum Linda said bringing up three at the same time was hard, but had beneﬁts. "When they were

babies it was tough but it became easier when they got older because they liked to do the same things - I was only entertaining one age group. They never had to start anything on their own or go anywhere alone, so they never had problems that others may have had, and that had advantages. “When they ﬁrst left I was a bit bereft but Ollie stayed that ﬁrst year; then we were always visiting them with food parcels. "The traumatic times were preparing for exams and waiting for the results - the simultaneous competitiveness was quite tricky.

The outline scheme was shown to residents living close to the site in October and is comprised of 24 flats and 36 houses for rent, including nine four and five bedroom properties on three levels. They will be built to a secure design advised by the police and also to energy efficiency Code Level 4 standards. The roofs are orientated to the south and west to allow maximum solar gain on water heating panels, and possibly for electricity generation. The women’s refuge is funded by Swindon Council with a government grant and will contain 20 selfcontained two and three bedroom flats to replace the present facility in East Swindon. It will include all the necessary measures to ensure victims of domestic violence are

safe and will feature an IT room, indoor children’s playroom and outdoor play space. Westlea councillor Steve Wakeﬁeld welcomed the project. “It’s quite high density but doesn’t appear so. It will provide much needed housing for rent and the refuge will be a high quality safe haven.” Residents from The Chesters were unsure about introducing the high density housing familiar to North Swindon, to the West. One said, “there are too many properties for the site; it will create a lot more trafﬁc in a quiet area.” Green Square will specify that some local labour should be employed by the building contractor. Subject to planning permission in January, the site should be completed in Spring 2011.

Plan for houses to the west suspended The threat of 3,000 new homes to the west of Swindon in north Wiltshire has been lifted after central government agreed the need for a further appraisal of whether proposals for the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for South West England are the most sustainable way forward for the region. MS therapy centre targets December for Westlea move

Work is well underway to complete the £800,000 conversion of Bradbury House on Westmead Drive into the new Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis. The centre, presently in cramped premises at Cheney Manor, will be able to greatly increase the range of therapies available to MS sufferers. A large lounge for members and three therapy rooms, as well as ofﬁces to run the charity, will complement the centre piece of the expansion - a giant sausage shaped pressure tank which can be divided to allow up to twenty people to receive oxygen therapy. Former pupil helps new generation of media hopefuls

Primary school pupils received the red carpet treatment at a ceremony at the end of September when the winners of a short animation film competition were awarded with Swindon Oscars. The soundtrack on the entry from Brook Field Primary impressed judges so much that a special category was created to reward them. The group had been given an insight into putting together a video with the help of former pupil Kylie Stanton who is studying film production technology at Staffordshire University. The brief was to create a 30 second animation, but the ideas flowed and the animation called Funkybonez, based on the book Funnybones, ended up three times longer. “Ninety seconds is quite short really, but we had to take about 250 shots; it took us three days to make,” said team member Harry Apps. Teacher Rachel Bartlett said the group members acquired a wide range of skills. “They worked hard to learn the techniques of film making, developing story telling and IT skills, as well as working as a team to turn their ideas into words and then into a video. It was very impressive what they achieved.”

Demand for stories by children’s author Neil Griffiths was so great that his two planned storytelling slots became an all day story session. Madeline James and Tracey Costello from Pulse Wholefoods were pleased with the interest shown in their range of organic baby soaps and shampoos, as well as products such as Nanny-Milk, a goats’ milk formula for lactose intolerant infants. “GPs refer mums of lactose intolerant babies to us for this product,” said Madeline. David Miles of the Swindon Energy Project distributed information about special fuel tariffs, how to switch utilities suppliers, and how to monitor fuel bills. Trust volunteers talked to mums about using real nappies rather than polluting disposables. Event sponsor and portrait photographer Tobias Robins said, “Swindon needs an event like this to boost small businesses and make young families aware of the support and products that are available. It’s not always obvious in the town that

The baby show has given me great exposure; it’s been lovely to meet mums who recognise me from the picture in the magazine.” Paul Biggs of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Environment Action team was thrilled with the turn-out. “We had no idea how the Baby Fair would be received, but we’ve been overwhelmed. We had a queue on a couple of occasions, so thanks to everybody for their patience. “There was a great atmosphere and we’re looking at another show in a bigger venue; perhaps even in six months. A new Breastmates group has been formed at Saltway Children’s Centre, Middleleaze. The breastfeeding support group jointly run by mothers, National Childbirth Trust breast-feeding counsellors, midwives and health visitors, meets on Thursdays 1.30pm to 3.30pm. As the country celebrates National Adoption Week from 9 to 15 November, one Swindon adopter advises not to leave it too long if you think adoption may one day be for you After years of ‘shall we, shan’t we’ - have children now, that is - we finally agreed to go for it. Two years later we weren’t unduly perturbed but it was a throwaway comment by the doctor which led to fertility tests. “Nothing conclusive, just ‘inexplicable’,” he said.

By now time was marching on and when friends announced they were adopting we realised we weren’t too old. After an initial meeting with a borough council family placement officer we had to wait ages before we could begin the home study. The wait in Swindon is currently 12 months before your ‘link’ social worker comes out to your home and asks you everything and anything about your life, your history and your feelings. During this time we talked about ‘matching’ - what kind of child we hoped to adopt. Gone are the days when babies are given up at birth by unmarried mums. Now many of the children available for adoption have been taken into care, and could we cope with the behaviours an emotionally or physically abused child might have? Our link worker was fantastic, really helpful and positive, and there were police checks, medical checks, references, an intensive training course - and the realisation that, even when approved, matching could take another two years or more. When everything was finally ready, 6 or 7 months later, we had to attend a ‘panel’ for approval. That week we received details of a one

year old. Four months later - after interviews with the child’s social worker; approval from social workers and a further panel approval for matching - our child came to live with us (on placement). A few months later we all attended court and the adoption was legal. We were fortunate that matching happened incredibly quickly. This is the exception. We know of people today who have waited more than two years to be matched - and that’s after the initial one year wait and seven or eight months of home study. Swindon Borough Council fostering and adoption services does not need to appeal for adopters - there are many, many couples on their books or going through the process. But, during National Adoption Week, if you are starting to think about adoption but are not quite sure, register your interest, attend an initial meeting and continue weighing up whether it’s right for you during the initial long wait. The October Link story on former Haydon Wick resident Della Parsons sailing in the Clipper Round the World race created an unexpected surprise for her mother Sheila Parsons. “My mobile rang when I was shopping on a break in West Wales, on the day The Link came through doors in Haydon Wick,” explained Sheila. “Mrs Morgan, who I’d not met but lives close by, rang to say that her nephew Brendan Hall is also in the race as the professional skipper of the Australian entry. He had stayed with her when he wasn’t sailing. Swindon graphic designer and community artist Kate Parsons is spending October working with street children in Mexico - helping poverty-stricken youngsters use art to develop their self-esteem. Kate is well known in North Swindon where she has worked extensively with pupils at Isambard School through the Flux project. Westlea Primary School has raised £11,000 to buy play equipment that is accessible to physically disabled pupils - but now they have set their hearts on creating an all-inclusive play area. West Swindon will have four newly refurbished play areas by Easter next year and another by the summer holidays. Dogs help raise cash for good causes

Janet’s Puppy Skool raised £550 for Children Living with Inherited Metabolic Diseases at their third annual open day in September. Behaviour displays in beginner, intermediate and advanced classes entertained Puppy Skool members and supporters of CLIMB, and four competition classes attracted entrants from all abilities. There were prizes for waggiest tail, best pub garden dog, best trick and fastest sit. At the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan in late September, Puppy Skool members raised £70. Teacher Anna McGuire, who ran the London marathon in April, and Genieve Painter, who has run the Swindon half on two occasions, were joined by teacher Helen Rao and nursery nurse Caroline Pricter and twelve children. The team came together last year after reading an appeal in The Link from Swindon Guide Dogs chairman Alan Fletcher for runners to support them. “The half marathon day is a lovely event and the number of children who want to train with

our running club has grown since we started to support guide dogs,” said Genieve. “Visits by Alan and his guide dog Poppy are always very popular.” Atharu Seth, who took part last year, said, “our running club is a lot of fun and it get us fit and healthy. We all think guide dogs is a good cause.” In 2008 the team raised £640, including £100 from pupil Mollie Calvert. They hope to have raised more this year when all sponsorship is counted.

Fond memories of Ivy Armstrong

There was a large turnout and moving tributes at the funeral of Ivy Armstrong on 8 October in recognition of a life committed to children.

One of 17 children, Ivy is survived by six children, 22 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. From a young age before the war she would look after neighbourhood children and continued to do so after she married Tom Armstrong in 1956. Her commitment to children continued throughout her life. She was one of the ﬁrst volunteers with the West Swindon Family Project when it started at Toothill Farm under the auspices of the National Children’s Home and continued when it moved to Gainsborough Way, Freshbrook. She was invited to cut the twentieth anniversary cake in 2002. Her GP Dr Kandy Kandiah from

Sparcells Surgery, said, “Ivy was such a lovely woman; a wonderfully caring person who was always helping others.” Julie Batson, manager of the West Swindon Children’s Centre, said Ivy always did that little bit extra. “She was a member of the management committee for many years and was always a great support for the families at the centre and the staff. “Ivy was a very kind person and would willingly help with any activities, like the organisation of family holidays and fundraising. In the holidays, when there was nobody in the creche, she would come in to check and clean all the toys to ensure they were safe for the children.”
