In September 2000 journalist and author Judy Jones caused a furore by lambasting the town in the New Statesman magazine. Her article concluded: 'Swindon's greatest tragedy is not that it has so conspicuously failed to reinvent itself as a go-ahead, culturally rich and vibrant city after the final collapse of its railway industry in the 1980s, but simply that its elected representatives have barely started bothering to try.' Not unlike the recent episode when style guru Wayne Hemingway made unfriendly remarks about the town in the May edition of an obscure magazine, the Mayor was suitably distressed at the hurtful remarks and town worthies expressed woe at being misrepresented. But in 2000 Swindon was well and truly sliding into the pits. A shambolic and secretive bid to be declared a city to mark the millennium was finally killed off by the Government at the end of that year. A second effort in the Queen's Jubilee Year 2002 went the same way. The failure of the Education department in 2001 led to political upheaval with Labour giving way to a Conservative administration which has run the council ever since. Failure by the Social Services department followed and at the end of 2002, Swindon was rated as one of the 15 worst run councils in the country. Have things got better? This summer she retraced Brunel's steps as he set out the route of the Great Western Railway. Her impressions, insights and comments collected whilst walking from Paddington to Penzance will be published next year, in ti me for the Brunel 200 celebrations. Her hike brought her from high on Liddington Hill into the town centre via the Old Town railway path and along the route of the old canal. It caused her to reflect on the sprawl of the town and the imminent loss of more countryside - in the Front Garden, to the east of the A419 and at Coate Water. "From Liddington you can see large areas being proposed for development. The idea of building 16,000 to 20,000 more houses in and around the town must be a concern to everybody. It just seems Swindon wants to keep on growing and growing and the reasons have not been clearly explained to people. "Turning Coate Water into an

However Judy's criticism of the University of Bath attitude toward Swindon is unforgiving. In the February 2001 Link - when the university was still committed to building in the town centre Judy said that the University of Bath in Swindon was better than no university at all, but she was not impressed by the patronising, colonial attitude of sending in'academic missionaries' to educate Swindon. Her view hasn't changed much. "Why is it that Bath, with a population of 80,000 has two universities, and Swindon with nearly 200,000 people cannot have a university in its own name? Bath's demands to go to Coate is very imperialistic when promises were made quite recently not to build on that land, and now so many people oppose development there. "I can see why there is such a great mistrust in the organisations which purport to represent the people of Swindon."

Peter Jones, newly appointed Chief Executive of the New Swindon Company will be talking about the plans to regenerate the town over the next few years. The company is sponsored by Swindon Council and the Government to assemble packages of land for redevelopment and work with property developers to realise jointly agreed plans for change. Last year the company presented proposals for developing different zones in the town centre and has identified land for re-use, such as the old post office/magistrates court site off Fleming Way, and the central police station. The council is trying to kick start

Some people living in newer parts of the town will ask themselves, so what? Many avoid going into the centre if they can help it because of road congestion and the cost of parking. This meeting is an opportunity to discover if the town centre is going to get better. Also on the agenda will be a report on the introduction of street wardens in council house areas.

Community and cultural space to be lost There is a lot missing in the town centre, particularly large spaces for events, exhibitions and performances. Now one of the few available - the former railway museum in Faringdon Road, below - is about to be turned into yet more offices by Swindon Council. Since the rail

This is a case of fitting the building to the use, rather than offering services in the appropriate place. The council should reconsider. Closing the former railway museum will be a lost opportunity to broaden Swindon's cultural scope, shutting off an intangible which could give the town a dynamism and interest which it sadly lacks.

Despite Mr O'Sullivan's pleas to the Advertiser not to run a story about a brief discussion between himself and local beat officer PC Paul Matthews, the paper ran a front page headline and a page 2 article on Friday 30 September claiming the school and the police were launching a blitz on graffiti, and that children face arrest for carrying marker pens. A shocked Mr O'Sullivan explained that Freshbrook and Grange Park beat officer PC Paul Matthews had approached him about tagging across West Swindon. "As West Swindon's community school we take our responsibilities to pupils and the whole area seriously. If graffiti is an issue in the community then we should work with all agencies to combat it - through education and taking appropriate action with parents if one of our pupils is involved. "We are no different from any other school; a small minority of pupils break the rules in and outside school. But the whole tone of the Advertiser article was that all of our pupils are suspect." Mr O'Sullivan said the first he knew of a story was when a reporter and a photographer were seen stopping pupils leaving school at the end of the day. When

But the Advertiser's actions means any formal initiative with the police will be shelved, and the opportunity for a good news story has been lost. "We take fifty per cent of West Swindon's secondary age children. The way the Swindon Advertiser has treated our pupils and our parents is intolerable."

Council lead member for education Gary Perkins told the meeting last year that some schools might be knocked down and rebuilt, whilst others would be closed and land sold to generate income for school redevelopment. Last November most of the public at the meeting were Windmill Hill School parents, fearful that the temporary school put up in 1986 to accommodate West Swindon's baby boom was in the firing line for closure. Councillors gave assurances that Windmill Hill had not been chosen. But nearly a year later - after months of informal consultations Swindon Council's cabinet on 5 October agreed to proceed with a pre-statutory consultation on rebuilding Toothill Primary School on its present site and combining Freshbrook and Windmill Hill primaries into a new school on the Freshbrook site. Throughout the year Windmill Hill parents have been making heard their view that their school is happy and successful because it is small and single form entry, and the council should not shut it. In response to this pressure, Coun Perkins, in the lead up to the cabinet meeting, revealed he would be happy for the new school to be called Windmill Hill and its staff transferred. This ensured an angry reaction from Freshbrook School parents who have been less vocal during the informal consultation discussions. Coun Perkins told the cabinet that Toothill School and parents

"We need to build on the excellence found at both schools." Fellow West Swindon councillor Nick Martin agreed it was a challenging decision. "All we're trying to do is offer the community a brand new building." The cabinet agreed an amendment put forward by Freshbrook & Grange Park councillor Peter Greenhalgh that a shadow governing body for a new school be set up to take a leading role in the pre-statutory consultation. However this idea was quashed when Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors voted it down at the council's ratification committee on 11 October. After the cabinet meeting campaigning Windmill Hill parent Chris Davison said ques ti ons from the public were not dealt with satisfactorily and the cabinet had tried to hide behind the proposal to set up a shadow governing body. "We were incensed by Coun Perkins suggestion that the weight of opinion generated by Windmill Hill parents throughout this year did not count so highly when it comes to the pre-statutory consultation. I am not confident that we will be listened to in this next round of consultation." However Gemma Roberts said Freshbrook School parents are

They have called themselves North Swindon Breast Mates and aim to give new mothers a chance to meet others who are breastfeeding. Abbey Meads community worker Roxy Cox said, "some breastfeeding mothers feel uncomfortable going out in public; this group will help build confidence. "A lot of people have never seen breastfeeding and this group is about breaking down barriers." Members of Breast Mates all have babies under six months old, and have a range of experiences to share with other mums, including breastfeeding premature babies. Before launching, group members completed a six-week course covering all aspects of breastfeeding under the guidance of Abbey Meads health visitors Lin Miles and Anne Seymour who came up

They believe that whilst support from health professionals is essential, women will often listen more to friends, neighbours and other women who speak their own language and have personal experience. It is good to be with other mums who are breastfeeding and who can share their experiences." Group members plan to visit local antenatal classes to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and will occasionally invite speakers to sessions. A tale of foiled terrorists Former West Swindon councillor Bob Pixton has published a book looking at a failed action against the British Government of the day which is now celebrated each year with bonfires and fireworks. Like most people. Bob had little understanding of the plot beyond the arrest of the Yorkshire terrorist Guy Fawkes. "I was very surprised by the planning or lack of it, and how Fawkes and his conspirators actually were able to get so far," said Bob. "Even more interesting was the tale of the escape. arrest, trial and gory execution of the other plotters.

Junction 16 Theatre Group take on the task of performing three short plays with a twist in the tale at Purton Village Hall on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November, 7.30pm. The first of the plays Semblance of Madness by John H Newmeir is set in a psychiatric hospital, where three women claim to be nurses feigning madness in order to get a confession out of a real lunatic. The second Under The Twelfth Sign by Enid Coles concerns Mary, who believes she may have inherited her mother's gift for influencing other people's thoughts. In the third play A Cut in the Rates by Alan Ayckbourn, Miss Pickhart relives the fateful night when the 'saw the woman in half' trick went disastrously wrong.
