Harvest Festival is always a time when children are encouraged to think of others. The Link asked primary schools to support a shoebox appeal by the charity Hope Now to help children in orphanages in the Ukraine. Performing only his second cry since taking delivery of his uniform and bell, live on BBC Wiltshire Sound, Fred called: "Oyez, oyez, oyez. I am called upon today to announce the launch of a new World Wide Web site for Swindon on the Internet. "www,swindonlink is a new way of finding out what is going on in the area. Celebrations bring community together On 30 October, Hindus Sikhs and Jams throughout the world celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Light, to welcome the Hindu year 2054. Meeting to discuss community problems The police, local councillors, school governors and residents will be getting together on Wednesday 12 November, 7.30pm, to discuss the issues and problems facing people living in Freshbrook and Grange Park. All residents of the area are invited to attend at Freshbrook Community Centre. The meeting will be the annual general meeting of the Freshbrook Village Group residents' association which manages the Centre and represents community interests. Vandalism around the village centre and across the area is a major concern and discussions will focus on what can be done to prevent such problems.

Youngsters hanging around Freshbrook Village Centre have been given an outlet for their energies, thanks to local counciler Phil Rashid. At the suggestion of The Link, Phil contacted Everybody's Gym at Greenbridge who were more than happy to offer the teenagers a low rate and provide guidance in the safe use of the equipment. "It's great for my rugby training," said Adam Hicks. The workout was better than expected for Becky Tanner. "It's good fun; I would just be hanging about at the shops if I didn't do this." Vandalism costs school £2,000

Yet again vandals have struck at Westlea School causing £2,000 worth of damage.

On 12 October, classroom windows were broken in the main building and toughened double glazed units were smashed in mobile buildings. The main gate post was also ripped out of the ground. In the last two months, 150 roof tiles have been broken and over the last two years playground picnic tables have been broken, a play structure damaged and removed, and a play house bought by parent contributions smashed up. Commenting on the catalogue of vandalism, headteacher Suzanne Seaton said, 'we are terribly sad about the damage. We want people to use the grounds, we are a school in the community. But there is a minority of people abusing us and we have to consider whether we can remain such an open environment." Children learn to sign Children at Westlea School marked Deaf Awareness Week in early October with a visit from Libby Shephard, Swindon Council's hearing impaired advisor and Mollie the signing doll. Community cafe closes Toothill Community Centre's cafe has been closed amidst recrimination between centre management committee members. The volunteers running the cafe, who were pictured serving in last month's Link, feel they were not given a fair chance to prove themselves. Elaine Walters expressed anger at the decision. "The committee were against the idea from the start. The cafe repaid the start-up loan from the centre and we were building up good support from mums and elderly people in Toothill. More people were starting to use the centre. "1 paid £40 out of my own money to take a health & hygene course and the centre paid for kitchen refurbishment. "The cafe never set out to be a profit making activity; we wanted it to be a service for Toothill people, to help develop community spirit. We feel as if we have been stabbed in the back." Centre chairman Peter Taylor said the cafe was closed for lack of support. "It ran for longer than the 6 weeks agreed by the committee in the summer. It seemed that two committee members were spending a lot of time involved with the cafe without much return to the centre. I cannot understand why they are complaining about this." Advertisement

Barnardos benefit from big collection Children from Brook Field School donated £1,328 to Barnados as part of the Harvest Festival collection in early October. Area fund raising officer Caroline Jones said contributions from schools were always greatly appreciated. The collection by Brook Field children was absolutely amazing. Community association for Roughmoor now being planned Ten residents of Peatmoor and Sparcells met with Swindon Council community workers on 15 October to discuss the setting up of a community organisation to take up local issues in the area. A constitution is now being considered with a view to holding an inaugural meeting in December. High achievers gather at Hreod Hreod Parkway School played host to 135 of the most able year 7 children from Swindon's secondary schools on 20 October. The Challenge Plus event, sponsored by Motorola, was led by education consultant Scott Hurd who put the students through an action packed day of discussion, decision making and practical work. The students were formed into teams with colleagues from other schools and were given the task of designing a communication system, then presenting their ideas to a business client. Motorola Communications Manager Angela Bartlett had the task of choosing the successful entry.

In between practical sessions Scott Hurd gave motivating talks about team work, interpersonal communications, selling and presentation techniques. Project organiser Fil Came of Learning Works said the day was arranged as part of a Swindon Council initiative to stimulate and raise achievement amongst the town's more able children. In January a Swindon branch of the National Association of Able Children in Education (NACE) will be launched in the town.

Juniors get safe place to play The Octobus play bus is coming to St Andrew's Ridge to provide a place for pre-teenagers to get together A half term play session is being organised fromlpm to 3pm on 30 October and an after school session takes place on 13 November from 4pm to 6pm. The Octobus will be parked at The Crescent (Bovis site) and children aged 5 to thirteen will have the chance to try their hand at arts and craft activities and take part in group games.

Could this be Abbey Weeds? Planted areas are not getting the maintenance they deserve from Swindon Council, says Ian Dobie, chairman of the Abbey Meads residents' association. "The Haydon Development Company spent a lot of money on planting in the early days of Abbey Meads, but the areas handed over to Swindon Council have not been looked after," he said. "There has been an improvement lately, but in some places weeds have wiped out shrubs. There needs to be a team working in the area permanently." He said the association is also in touch with Thames Water about the maintenance of water courses which are very overgrown. "There are grills over culverts, but they are very wide and a child could get trapped. They would then be hidden because of the overgrowth."

Rhoda Manook, 18, and her sister, Miriam, 16, from Yarmouth Close achieved brilliant results in their A Levels and GCSEs at The Ridgeway School and have now moved onto the next stage of their education. Rhoda passed Maths, Further Maths, Physics and German at A' Level and has been accepted on a General Engineering degree at Cambridge University. However she is spending this year on an industrial placement at Raychem in Swindon which means she can continue to play lead viola with the Swindon Youth Orchestra. "I did not set out to get into Oxbridge, but after applying and receiving an offer, I decided it was achievable, said Rhoda. Local politicians How MPs should MPs listen to the sounds of Guy Fawkes night get ready for the Michael Wills, MP for North Swindon, considers the importance of paying attention to the electorate next round The House of Commons finds its own distinctive way of celebrating the great national holidays. But it does not seem to have any plans to mark 5 November. Perhaps all us MPs are still a little too conscious of the fact that people might be celebrating how far Guy Fawkes got with his plot, rather than the fact that it was foiled. Despite all the euphoria of the new Labour government's protracted honeymoon, politicians forget their true standing with the public at their peril. None of us are elected because of who we are. All those personal qualities in which we take such private pride have little impact on the electorate. We are elected because of what we represent - in my case, the Labour Party. And all too often public enthusiasm for what we represent is distinctly lukewarm. 'Not bad - for a politician' is about as positive as it gets. Before the election, a joke was going round Westminster. Michael Portillo once asked a close friend why, whenever he appeared on television, people took an instant dislike to him. His friend replied, 'I suppose it's

because it saves time. Not much of a joke perhaps but it passed for one at Westminster. And it is a telling example of the distaste in which politicians are held. No comment in the joke about policies. Just straight abuse. Politicians regularly come top in polls about the most despised professions - even above estate agents and my previous profession of television journalist. The breakdown of trust between politicians and those there are meant to represent has reached cri-

sis point. In a recent poll, only 4% said they believed that the Tories keep their promised, while only 6% believed that Labour and the Liberal Democrats keep theirs. That is why Tony Blair never ceases to remind his Parliamentary army that what the people have given, the people can take away. Being an MP is a job and a vital part of the that job is to start restoring that trust between people and government. Keeping our promises would be a good start. The Government has made a flying start in implementing our manifesto pledges. Listening to people would be another. That is why I have spent the summer holding a series of open meetings on PMH, on education, on Swindon's bus service and on my first term at Westminster. And I plan many more to come in the months ahead. But there's a long row still to hoe. And the fireworks lighting up the Guy Fawkes night sky remind us of how far we all still have to go.

Candidates are starting to line up for the local elections to Swindon Council next May, the first for two years. One of the most keenly contested will be the huge Toothill ward which takes in Toothill, Westlea, Shaw and Roughmoor. Sitting councillor Terry Winter, who is up for election next year, has resigned from the Labour Party pending charges of indecent assault on an under 16. Nick Martin, below, from Middleleaze, Shaw has been selected by the Conservatives to campaign for the seat. He has lived in the area since 1994 and stood for the Toothill seat in the 1996 elections.

Demand strong For the third year running, Greendown was chosen by more year 6 children and their parents than its nominal limit of 208 children. Two hundred and thirty three new students joined us in September.

Welcome to new deputy head Two of our deputy headteachers, James Williams and Phil May, were promoted to headships in South Wales and Gloucester respectively last Easter. But we have been more than fortunate to appoint Mrs Val Houldey to take their place. Val grew up in Cardiff but went to study English and Music at Sheffield University. She has taught in the Midlands, St John's, Marlborough and most recently she was head of English and Drama at Highworth Warneford. Val is excited to be at Greendown: "I was impressed with Greendown's real desire to raise achievement every year. The school has a reputation in Swindon of an extremely caring staff with a tutor system second to none.

Quality mark for quality work Greendown's work with our special needs students has recently gained national recognition with the award of the Basic Skills Agency's Quality Mark. Given to institutions which meet a rigorous schedule and programme of improvements in learning, it is much prized. Head of Learning Support, Mr Andy Russell recently accepted the award at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. "We have a well-

worked out programme which includes reading tests for all students in years 7 to 9, the creation of extra support classes and help for students setting targets in Reading and Maths, " he says, "and our plans will he continually monitored by the school governors". Future students will obviously reap the benefits of this nationally-rewarded support work.

Earlier this year, Shaun was diagnosed with Hodgkinson's Lymphoma - a type of cancer. Despite losing his hair in chemotherapy and being often in pain, Shaun was as full of enthusiasm for school as ever and continued with his PE and games despite his treatment, playing successfully for the cricket team. Now officially signed-off his course of treatment, Shaun is just pleased life is returning to normal and he needn't he the focus of attention anymore.

Achievers rewarded Greendown runs a suecessful award system called 'Personal Achievements'. Good or steady improvement in school work is awarded a 'PA'. When a student has collected the requisite number, a certificate is awarded. For those few students who reach the dizzy heights of 100 PA's, a gold embossed certificate is presented by the governors to recognize the outstanding achievement.

Mark Wylie and Sarah Webb, both in year 7 last year, gained the coveted Gold 100PA award and received gold certificates at the end of year assembly.

Congratulations to our graduates Five of our 1995 graduates did well in this summer's A' Level exams at New College. Rebecca Nobes and Eve Osorio have started at Exeter University to read French & Spanish and Psychology respectively. Hailey Garrett is looking for a position with a company in Swindon. Jeannette Hindle is taking a teacher training course at Cardiff Institute and Emma Smith has started a Psychology degree at Plymouth. Not available for the photo was Sarah Compson, our top GCSE performer in 1995 who has just started a degree in mechanical engineering at Bath University. Her brother Andrew left Greendown in 1993 and is our first entrant to Oxford where he is also studying engineering. We extend our best wishes to all our graduates.

Where are you now? As an 11 to 16 school, it is difficult to keep track of people who have been through the 'Greendown experience' since 1991 when our first students left us. We are always interested in knowing how our graduates are doing. Please contact Ms Erica Holley at the school.

Making music, making waves! Greendown Music School - that unusual 'school within a school' - is now stepping off into the public entertainment world. Not content with recruiting nearly a quarter of the school to either learn singing or one of 9 musical instruments, Andre Pysanczyn, our Head of Music, has been swamped by a tidal wave of our students eager to perform. Our A-Cappella singers, classical players and rock bands entertained many of our partner primary schools this year with musical assemblies. So many students want to show off their talents that three concert evenings take place every half term with 60 performers a night from every year group performing soul, rock, ballads and theme music. Concerts on 20,21 and 22 October were again packed and the quality of per-

formance just gets better. But they're not stopping there! Many of the musicians have been working in a professional recording studio preparing to release a CD for Christmas. Six of our girls will be backing Masquerade, a professional duo who will he performing a specially written song 'Have Faith' at the Children in Need concert at Swindon's Wyvern Theatre on 13 November.

And on 23 November, the finest pop music talents the school has fostered will he performing at a unique, limited ticket Cabaret FTvnin or thc Nikon Hotel.

Business students make their mark with marketing ideas British Telecom, who will he hosting this year's BBC CHILDREN IN NEED APPEAL for the West of England region, have invited Greendown's Year 11 Business Studies students to market the event. Greendown has always had a strong policy of linking with local business and industry, but this venture into the world of competitive marketing is something of a first for our students. They have been given complete responsibility for the design and creation of promotional material for the appeal in the region and their work will figure on BBC television at the launch on 21st November. All their work will he used in support of their GCSE exam coursework and should provide the examiners with some unique material.

Parent help gains another computer WHAT IS DESIGN - A - CABARET? Basically, the audience participates in a big way. Our top eight acts - featuring songs by the Beatles, Oasis, the Spice Girls and others - will not know the running order for the evening. Guests will have to bid for the acts to come on stage and entertain. The more you bid, the more money we raise. There will also be spoof TV game shows with prizes, and an auction to take part in. This will be an unusual and unique event, the first of its kind by a Swindon school. Support our talented musicians and help us raise money for two good causes.

Once again, parents have helped us add to our library resources. Over 3,500 Asda computer tokens were exchanged recently for a Viglen computer. Mrs Jenny Eagle, our library manager, is delighted. "The computers get heavy usage during lunch time and it is wonderful to be able to offer our students more chance to learn in their own time." Let's hope the scheme continues.

Westwords: start of the longest poem

Triple whammy from sports stars

Over the last year, a group of teachers from West Swindon schools have been meeting to promote English creative work. One of the most interesting ideas is just starting to take shape in conjunction with the Swindon Festival of Literature. Using just the views, and experiences of life in West Swindon, children from Greendown and partner primary schools aim is to create the longest poem ever written about where they live and work. When completed, we hope the poem will be displayed in the Link Ccntre as part of next year's Literature Festival celebrations.

Surrounded by all the wonderful sporting opportunities Swindon provides, it's no surprise to find some outstanding talents developing at Greendown. Alex Povey in year 8, a player with Shaw FC since 1991, has represented England in five matches at junior level. Supported all the way by his parents and by his first coach, Paul Mutlow, Alex won a Shoot competition where the first 200 entries won a free trial. But after that his own raw talent took him through to the national side. A goal of a different kind frames another Greendown star. Kelly Hillier-Bowden now in year 9 started playing hockey last year under the tutelage of hockey playing maths teacher Mr Chris Jones. Quickly establishing herself as a talented goalie, she was spotted playing for Swindon Ladies by a scout from East Gloucester and won a Woman of the Match award.

The play's the thing' Greendown has well-established links with its partner primary schools. Each year Mr Tim Noble and his team are invited to work on new and exciting projects with children in years 4, 5 and 6. Contributing to Oliver Tomkins Infants School' Arts Week was a high point, but devising an improvised drama with Freshbrook year 6 pupils - most of whom had chosen to come to Greendown was equally challenging. Based on the Egyptian creation myth, Tim and the year 6 pupils worked to recreate the beginning of the

world using only a few props that included a cat mask, whip and nylon beach wind break. Later this year it is hoped that all year 6 pupils will be visiting Greendown as part of our Shakespeare term, to watch performances of Midsummer Night's Dream, specially adapted for this age group by Salisbury Playhouse. In December, Westlea year 6 pupils, directed by Tim, will be performing their own version of Midsummer Night's Dream.

Craig Tiley in year 10 started cycling after his father began racing again. He quickly discovered his own ability and after winning a cup last year and a national bike day event at the Castle Coombe circuit, he's on his hike for the finals in Manchester in October.

Greendown's first chair of governors Roger Ogle has stepped down from the position he has held since 1985, some 18 months before our first children arrived. Commenting on his tenure, he said, "the last 12 years have been both exciting and a challenge for all concerned. During this time of huge changes in education, we have seen the introduction of the GCSE, the national curriculum, national league tables and a new regime for school inspection. "Interest in education has been

greatly raised and I pay tribute to headteacher Ian Matthews and the staff for coping with The demands placed upon them. Greendown has become the school of parental choice in West Swindon, based in the community and serving the community." Andrew Basson, a governor for 6 years and a parent of one of our first graduates, was elected to the chair at the first governors' meeting of the year in September. Shopmobility heads for 500 users after first anniversary Swindon's scheme to give people with disabilities independence around the town centre celebrated its first year on 22 October by announcing that its birthday fundraising target of £9,000 had almost been reached. Donations from town businesses will be used to purchase more powered scooters and wheelchairs to join the 26 powered and manual chairs available to borrow from the Shopmobility Centre at the Wyvern car park.

At present 430 people with disabilities, ranging in age from 10 to 96, are regular users with a further 123 temporary members. For many, Shopmobility has opened up lives lost to a house bound existance. Sue Child from Liden said she had not wandered around town for six years before she started using the facilities. "It's given me a new lease of life to do things independently. And I've met lots of nice people at the Shopmobiity centre."

"I'm absolutely delighted; I just love babies and Abigail is beautiful," said proud mum Sue, who with husband Ian, have a football mad family ranging in age from 17 years to the new arrival. What do firefighters do in-between call outs? Sub Officer Martin Lloyd from Westlea Fire Station provides the answer

There have been some serious incidents during the past month which have proved taxing to deal with. Most notable was a fire at a local hotel which required every fire engine in Swindon. Fire fighters found themselves involved in rescuing ten people as well as trying to extinguish the fire. I am happy to say that nobody was the worst for wear, though more than a little aware of the frightening experience that is caused by fire. People often ask me what we do when we are not dealing with fires.

It still surprises me that there are those who think we sit around waiting for something to happen. Our day is kept busy with constant training for any eventuality; road accidents, house fires and special service calls which include chemical spills or any incident where our services are required. There are also inspections and visits and talks to give. These take place around call outs, over 1,200 on last year's count. We had some honoured guests staying with us at Westlea in Octo-

ber. A fire fighter from Trinidad and Tobago was attached to us for a month observing events with Wiltshire Fire Brigade. We also had two American fire fighters staying for a week. We showed them how we carry out our duties here and hope to have introduced them to some new ideas. Finally, we have a new recruit, fresh from training school. Fire fighter Justin Thomas has joined the station. We wish him and his wife Nicki the best of times at the start of his new career.

Thousands of shoppers rewarded the fun loving staff by dropping contributions totalling £450 into collection buckets. Individual sponsorship will raise a further £200 for Breast Cancer Care. Asda stores nationwide sold a special nightshirt, pin badge and a floral bouquet to raise much needed funds for the charity, which gives support, help and information to women affected by breast cancer, and their families. Administration Manager Debbie Vickery has also put in her own special effort and hopes to raise a further £350 from a sponsored slim. She lost a stone in 4 weeks to bring her weight down to a petite 10 stone llb. Her target is to lose another 141b before Christmas and has promised to avoid all those tasty Asda Christmas puddings and other goodies which would ruin all her hard work.

Have you seen 4 Graffiti pros and cons get TV airing the writing on the wall?

Last month The Link published a page on behalf of Swindon Borough Council describing the problems the council faces in clearing up the graffiti and spray paint scribbling which deface many surfaces in public places. Reprinted on the left is the survey form which also appeared and more readers are invited to send in their views.

Survey returns so far show a generally negative reaction to graffiti with only a few people agreeing that it can be considered as art. Most respondents see graffiti as vandalism and want the people who do it apprehended and punished. Many people want a public meeting to express their views.

The views of 'graffiti artists' are mixed. Tim, a sixth form student at Ridgeway School, considers himself a serious artist producing eye catching, interesting 'pieces.' In the last year, he has spray painted 200 works and spent about ÂŁ1,000 on paint. "Graffiti is a way of expressing your art. It's a way of becoming known amongst other artists. But it's a problem controlling tagging or scribbling in public places. It looks a mess." But fellow spray painter Lee, who attends Swindon Art College disagrees. "You should not touch private homes, but tagging or bombing is OK in other places, it's a way of developing your style and letting other people know you're around. More legal sites should be provided to give people a chance to tryout. It's

a way of taking out your frustrations with life. We're not criminals. Young artists should be recognised." The two painters use Toothill Farm on Bodiam Drive as one of the few legal sites in Swindon. However one survey respondent wrote at some length that the Farm has become unsightly and degraded. Younger children are being encouraged to start graffiti, especially when they pick up cans thrown away by the 'artists' and use the last drops of paint in them on lamp posts and fences. Week for Youth Work Jane Kirk, West Swindon youth work team leader, Swindon Borough Council community & youth development division writes, Youth Work Week, from 3 to 9 November is a national initiative, when youth projects from all over the country actively promote both the profession of youth work and the potential of young people. This year's theme is 'Young people -finding a voice'. In West Swindon young people are finding and using their voices through a display in West Swindon Library until 14 November. Entitled 'Celebrating Youth,' it shows local young people doing constructive and positive activities for themselves and others. Look out for the piece by the Freshbrook Youth Committee, aged 13 to 18 who have taken on the responsibility for organising activities, raising funds and with the help of their friends and youth workers, setting the rules and runfling their own youth club at Freshbrook Community Centre. The group have just organised and taken part in a highly successful residential weekend at Trowbridge, which produced some of the items on display. Youth work is education for life,

it works by building relationships with young people, and offering them programmes of activities using an informal approach. Through youth work young people can come to take greater control over their lives. They learn to recognise their rights and responsibilities both as individuals and as members of communities. Some youth workers work in a club setting, others are detached workers who operate alongside young people on the street, or in cafes and shopping centres. In West Swindon we have both types of youth workers, with dropin facilities at Freshbrook and the Link Centre, youth clubs at Toothill and also at Greendown School. There's also an Information and Help Shop for young people as well as detached workers based at the Link Youth Unit. Pop into the library to find out more about the youth projects in West Swindon and to see Celebrating Youth. There are youth work opportunities in other parts of the town. Suzanne Bullimore from Peatmoor responds to the Mayor's article in the October Link on the legacy of Diana, Princes of Wales As we approach the building of the last village centre in West Swindon, atRoughmoor, and thus completion of the West Swindon expansion area, it is a good time to ask, 'Has West Swindon developed its own sense of community and identity?' The Mayor, Maurice Fanning, wrote in last month's Link about our collective response to the death of the Princess of Wales and how our expression of grief needed to be shared 'in the community.' I have been in West Swindon for nine years, but have lived in many different parts of the country, all with their own unique experience of 'community.' I am constantly encouraged by the high level of energy and commitment shown by

people who want to 'get things off the ground' and then sustain that commitment through many years. Our churches and schools have played a huge part in helping people to put down roots quickly and to become involved in the local area, but there is also a wide range of sporting, dancing, pre-school, musical, drama and neighbourhood groups which all add to the richness of corn munity. Be part of the energy of West Swindon and other parts of Swindon where The Link is distributed. To adopt the prayer of the ecumenical movement: 'Let us do nothing separately that we can do together.' Shoebox support for Ukraine orphanages Two local schools responded to a Harvest Festival appeal in October, put out by The Link magazine, for shoeboxes to be sent to orphans in the Ukraine by the charity Hope Now. And as a resuit a local courier company volunteered to collect and store the

boxes, then take them to a nationwide collection centre in Southampton. Children at Westlea School collected 180 shoeboxes filled with small items which will surprise and delight a child in the an orphanage. Nearly £200 in cash was also donated to help with transport to the Ukraine. Freshbrook's Windmill Hill School also joined the appeal and 100 boxes were brought in to their harvest assembly at Freshbrook Church on 21 October. Westlea parent and Swift Couriers sales director Marc WalkerLoveridge was so impressed by the appeal that he organised staff and vehicles to collect the boxes, store them and take them to the Hope Now warehouse. He also persuaded some clients such as Renault, Copy Cats and others who cannot be identified to donate boxes, paper, pencils and other useful items.

On2 November there is a chance to find out more about the charity's work in the Ukraine from Vic Jakopson, its director. Hope Now has helped orphanages and a school for deaf children, built a hostel, established a music school, organised children's summer camps and has started a trade school for ex-prisoners. At the end of the summer term donations by children at West Swindon schools produced two tons of essential items which were

sent to a newly discovered orphanage in a very poor condition. The Harvest Festival shoe box collection develops the connection between Swindon and Hope Now. Onward Christians in Abbey Meads

Wild start-up for youth club Rock Solid, a new youth club for children in school year 6 to year 8, took off in a spectacular way at the end of September. Mad, frantic games including a weetabix eating competition were features of the first evening which ended with sixty youngsters devouring the longest banana split ever.

Leaving, smeared with ice cream, chocolate sauce and hundreds and thousands, Kimberly Mead from Freshbrook said Rock Solid was good fun. "It's the first club I been to and it's been really great. I'll be coming again." Organiser Audrey Hutchinson said the club has a fast and dynamic approach, but there is space for youngsters to talk about what concerns them in a caring, friendly setting. Rock Solid meets on Fridays during term time, between 7pm and 8.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw. Children in years 6,7 or 8 are welcome to turn up. Or call Audrey Hutchinson on 527105. Following a path of prayer A few months after arriving in Westlea in mid-1995, Carolyn Soulsby heard a speaker talk about how God had enabled him to bring physical and emotional healing to people in Jesus' name. "The postnatal depression I was suffering from was healed that evening and it was the start of a new relationship with Jesus," says Carolyn, pictured right. She became involved in leading homegroups and Sunday prayers and helped with a Sunday club. Increasingly she wanted to study the bible more deeply. After a two year 'Taste and See' course exploring the Bible and many aspects of Christianity, she studied for a further year as preparation to lead services and preach in churches in the parish of West Swindon and The Lydiards. "If you had told me three years ago what I would be doing in 1997, 1 would not have believed

you," said Carolyn. "But here I am, ready to serve God. I look forward to making Jesus relevant to the lives of those I come in contact with."

Ten years ago complimentary therapies like osteopathy, acupuncture and remedial massage were still regarded as rather strange. Now many 'alternative' treatments can be found alongside conventional medical practice and are accepted as a natural approach to dealing with strain, injury and stress. Women aim to keep centre going Despite a sudden and complete cut in grant aid by Swindon Council from April, the Swindon Well Woman Centre, established in November 1987, is going to stay open. Management committee chair Ann Davis says there is no question of closure. "Our information and advice service to women by women, and medical support services, are too important to lose; it means we have to work harder to establish ourselves." The funding crisis hits home next year. All set for 70th Anniversary Appeal Swindon hosts the BBC Children in Need Appeal for the West on Friday 21 November for the first time ever. And you can take part in this fund-raising adventure, the 70th anniversary of the appeal. BT's headquarters at North Star will be transformed into Pudsey's Earth Station. All manner of monsters, dinosaurs, robots and creepy crawlies from the Cotswold Wildlife Park will take over the building for public viewing. There will be an Internet cafe and a funfair will light up the sky.

Long distance wedding A West Swindon couple took part in a wedding ceremony spread over two Saturdays in two countries across the globe. Tim Neave and Linda Hibbert received a blessing at St Mary's Church, Lydiard Park on Saturday 20 September. A week later they exchanged vows and were formally married at The Uniting Church, Yallourn North, close to Melbourne in Australia. The couple met at Greendown School where Tim was a maths teacher and Linda was a counsellor with Schools Outreach. "Our relationship began about two years ago, but it developed slowly until

we realised that we wanted to be with each other for the rest of our lives," said Linda. For her, Australia was a return home to her family. Tim has left his behind. Linda was the first full time counsellor employed by a Swindon school and will be known to many children who attend or have passed through Greendown. Commenting on her work, she said that she hoped that she had made a difference to the lives of the young people she had come in contact with.
