Dead-eye Daniel conquers With calls to bring traditional sports back into the curriculum, Westlea School responded on the last day of half term by organising its first ever conker championships. Headteacher Neil Griffiths said the children had gone conker mad in October so staff decided to focus their enthusiasm. Class tournaments took place after lunch on 21 October to select finalists to compete in the school assembly. After several hard fought knock-out matches, six year old Daniel Langford emerged triumphant as school champion. Using vicious technique he then took on Daniel Langford with oneofhis conkered Mr Griffiths' famed '4,000' to claim victims, Danielle Morton the £5 voucher prize at stake.

It's aimed at 14 to 20 year olds and will be called Inspirations. Ex-Ridgeway and New College student Kerrie, from Toothill, will be working with youth worker Kim Bowen to help the young people who join Inspirations to develop their ideas and prepare productions. Kerrie, who used to work with the Swindon Red Dot Theatre Company, says Inspirations will give young people interested in performing a chance to express themselves. 'We're not looking for experienced or super talented people. Inspirations needs teenagers who want to work together, develop their skills and have fun." She said that there is a lot of interest in the Inspirations idea on the youth grapevine, but she is keen to contact young people who have not heard the rumours. 'We will have an informal, but professional approach. We will have to discuss the issues that interest us, share our ideas and start working on how we can express ourselves through drama and dance. "Once we get going, who knows, it would be great to start a theatre company to perform for audiences."

June Bradley writes: The speaker at our September meeting was Mrs I M Thomson from the Swindon Museum. She gave a fascinating talk about the museum which stimulated many of us to revisit for the first time in ages. She brought along some mystery objects whose original use we tried to identify. These really had us puzzled. It was a most interesting and entertaining evening. We had a display in the Link library during our September promotion week to let the public know just how many opportunities are available through the WI. Returns from a recent questionaire gave as one of the greatest benefits of membership the opportunityoffriendshipwith other women of all ages and from all walks of life. Also highly valued are the wide variety of knowledge and skills that can be acquired first from speakers at the monthly meetings and then furtherdeveloped atourworkshops. Our meeting on 19 October was our annual craft and produce show - where some of these skills were on display. This year's schedule had classes for cookery, handicraft, floral and miscellaneous. You don't get anything for nothing Beware of 'sales' say public protection office Grange Park resident Eileen Mochan is feeling sore after spending £100 on goods she claims to be shoddy at a sale on 25 September. Like dozens of other people, she responded to a leaflet through her door advertising a sale of videos, radios, crockery and other household items at fantastically reduced prices at Freshbrook School. She said she should have suspected something was up when she turned up at the advertised 11am start time to be told that the sale goods had not arrived. She returned as advised at 3pm and discovered that buyers could not touch items and what was billed as a sale was in fact an auction. "The outfit were very slick at getting buyer's interest worked up," said a rueful Eileen. "The auctioneer piled boxes of crockery, cutlery and lots of other items, and added a video for good measure. The first buyer must have walked off with £300 worth for £50. Maybe that person was a plant because the rest of us who started to buy did not get anything like the same amount. "You're led to believe you're buying quality goods, they say it comes with a year's guarantee; but you can't examine the goods before you buy. The atmosphere becomes highly charged and you get taken

in. The dinner set I was given was very poor quality when I opened it outside, but the organisers refused to refund the money. They had two cheques totalling £100 backed by bankers card numbers and I came away feeling angry and conned. "1 say to Link magazine readers, 'learn from my mistake, don't get taken in, you don't get something for nothing.' Geoff Snowball, Swindon Senior TradingStandardsOfficerwithWiltshire Public Protection, said Eileen's experience was all too common. "The organisers of these last minute sales are often sailing very close to the wind. People should beware of the very low prices on offer and whether the sale is conducted like an auction. Prices mustbe displayed, so must be the name and address of the organiser. There are often problems with shoddy goods and possibly dangers if electrical goods are being sold. "Regrettably, the instinct for a bargain takes over; people throw caution to the wind and get sucked into buying. In short, I suggest people should avoid these 'sales' like the plague."

Good inspection report at short notice Shaw Ridge Primary School is "caring, supportive and sensitive to pupils' social, moral and cultural needs" according to a report published in early October by the government's education watchdogs Ofsted. The inspection which took place at barely 5 weeks notice at the end of the Spring term was used as a test bed for new inspection procedures which officially came into effect for all primary schools in September. Schools now get 9 months warning. Assessing the work of the school on three levels, poor, satisfactory and good, the report states that the quality of education provided is satisfactory and in some respects good. Standards in core subjects of English, Maths and Science were close to or above the national average. Information Technology and geography were below average for older children, Music is below average, but FE is above average across the school. Special Educational Needs pupils are strongly supported and achieve satisfactory to good standards. Pupil behaviour is recorded as exemplary and the inspectors state that "the school has worked hard to achieve its pastoral aims and is now well placed to put added emphasis on achieving its academic aims."

The proposed equipment to be located in the play area was criticised by residents fifteen months ago because it was too large and too close to their homes. The scale of the project was toned down by removing an aerial runway and increasing the size of the toddlers play area was increased to satisfy objectors.

New park takes shape with public backing The latest in a series of meetings over the last year has given public approval for plans to develop the Shaw tip into a major leisure facility for Swindon. Forty people looked at the detailed plans on 7 September, developed from ideas put forward at an earlier meeting in June. Up to 70% of the 100 acre site will be planted with a variety of broad leaf trees and conifers which will attract a range of bird and animal life. There will be open spaces, flower meadows and an amphitheatre for small scale events. Footpaths, cycle and horse riding tracks will cross the site, linking Spa rcells and Shaw,

Why can't we recycle plastic in Swindon?

David would refuse to to walk the dog with Pat because she collected bottles and cans chucked away by unthinking pedestrians. Now local youngsters deliver bottles and cans to them. Alison Cowall from Mortimer Close, Shaw, recycles the cans of pet food for her dog and three cats. Clothing and fabric is delivered to the Prospect Foundation. She says that we can't keep digging up the world's resources so that the waste can be buried in tips. More people should make an effort.

Patricia Connolly from Freshbrook recycles as much as possible and the bin men now only have to take away two small bin bags. She still uses terry towel nappies with 16 month old twin daughters because of the environmental hazards created by disposable nappies. Apart from the resources needed to make them,Patricia is conscious of the fact that disposables do not decompose in landfill and are a major cause of poisonous methane gas. Eileen Sawyer from Hillyard Close, Grange Park says recycling has become a way of life in her family with her 3 and 6 year old sons earning small amounts of pocket money helping to bag and load newspapers for a trip to the recycling bank. They now tell her off if they see a tin can in the kitchen bin and not washed out in the recycling box. Eileen makes the point that packaging nowadays encourages people to become part of a throwaway society, unlike that of her parents and grandparents. She's looking forward to Thamesdown Council's proposed home composting scheme. So is Wayne Brigginshaw from Hampton Drive, Grange Park. He realised ten years ago that people have to act to look after the world's resources and has been recycling as much as possible since. A point made by all our callers is the lack of opportunity to recycle plastic in Thamesdown. 'When is the Council going to set up a plastic recycling bank?' was a common question. We'll try to find out.

Grange Park compost scheme delayed until Spring The launch of a scheme to involve residents of Grange Park in compostingorganickltchen and garden waste has been put back until next May next year. TheThamedown Council project, building on a pilot exercise which took place in Westlea in 1993, was due to start last August. However it was referred back to thePublic Works and Services Committee for further discussion. Now that the necessary committee approvals have been achieved, council officers have decided that launching a compost scheme in the Autumn was not a good idea.

The scheme would offer householders two options: 1.compost kitchen waste in their own gardens with free use of a container (which could be bought at a low price after 6 months, or 2. using water proof sacks which the council will collect for a central composting scheme. A spokesman said colder winter weather slows the compostingprocess, there would be poor results and residents might not support the project. The Grange Park scheme will be the basis for starting similarprojects across West Swindon.

Frankenstein - a monster hit (made in England) Corinne Glanville gets behind Robert De Niro's latex to preview the MGMs 4 November offering With a budget of £30 million this film takes Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to new vistas - from the usual visual effects of a bolt through the neck and a lightning strike to bring the 'man' to life, to the ultimate in the use of prosthetics and make up to create a believable monster. Robert De Niro had to be in the make-up chair at 3am on filming days at Shepperton Studios. He was covered in latex and his features were added to with rubber prosthetics to create a look historically correct in that they were consistent with the medical knowledge of 1794, the year in which Mary Shelley set her story. By the time Robert De Niro was ready for filming,the only areas of the star'sflesh to be seen were his eyes and one earl De Niro has described this role as "the most terrifying of my career"

How secure is your shed? Last month Swindon Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Bob Walton appealed to readers to secure their homes more firmly. Now he asks you to check your property outside the house Thefts from sheds, garages and outhouses are on the increase. The following crime prevention advice is offered in an attempt to prevent you becoming the next victim. Do your shed doors and windows lock? If so doyoualways lock them? It is not always enough to rely on a basic lock. Invest in a good quality 'closed shackle' padlock to stop thieves with bolt-cutters. Instead of merely screwing the hasp and staple to the wood, bolt them through it to make it more difficult for the potential thief to get into the shed. Once your doors and windows are secured, make sure you lock them every time the shed is unattended. A thief will take any opportunity to enter and steal property why make it easy? Don't forget to keep your shed keys in a secure place inside the house. If you hide the keys in the garden thieves will find them - they know where to look. If you store your bicycle in the shed, secure it using your bike lock and an eye-bolt fastened to the wall. Make sureyourbicycle is registered. Likewise, is your lawnmower secured? Buy a strong chain and padlock to secure it to the wall. By

securing larger items inside the shed it makes it more difficult for thieves to remove them should they get in. Do you always lock your garden tools away in the shed after using them? If you leave tools hanging arounda thief will usethemtobreak into your property or your neighbour's. Most people store power tools and other valuables in their shed. Inmost homes a little space can be found to store such items indoors. A house built of bricks and mortar is more secure than a shed built of wood. Are your valuable items securitymarked with your post-code? Let thieves know that your property is

post-coded by displaying a sticker. Post-coded property is less attractive to a thief. Keep a record of serial numbers of valuable items. The police have more chance of recovering your property if it is identifiable. If you must keep valuables like fishing tackle in the shed, store them out of sight if possible. If thieves can see what's inside, they can see what's worth stealing. • Sgt. Terry Cuss, our regular police correspondent, was knocked off his bike and has suffered a broken wrist. Put your kids on the fast track to the information superhighway The majority of future jobs, we are told, will involve working with computers. And there's been a lot of publicity about the information superhighway, making world wide communications infinitely easier. But there's a problem. Inability to use the keyboard effectively limits future job chances. It's like a tollgate which schools do little to address. Not being able to type properly is frustrating when youngsters want to create well presented school work now, and does not provideanessential mechanical skill for the future. Now Future Business College, based in the Shaftesbury Centre, Rodbourne, the Swindon based computer training business is offering parents the chance to help their children's future job prospects. Principal John Wicking says knowing how to type is an essential skill for the future. "All this high technology is of little use if you cannot use it effectively. Unless you can type almost without thinking, you are going to be at a disadvantage. It's frustrating to keep looking for the right key to hit; it's slow and stunts the creative processes. "Learning to type for children is a bit like learning to ride a bike; slow at first, but unforgettable once they get going. Children of all abilities benefit; the more able write better essays, those who find writing and

spelling difficult can improve their confidence by making their work look good." Using both typewriters and computers, with tape recorded instruction given over headphones, the 14 hour courses can be taken at times suitable to the individual The first kids' session starts in November. From 1 December to 14 January, the facilities will be available from 9am to 6pm daily, until 8pm on Tuesday and Wednesday,andSaturriays9am to 1pm. The normal cost is £6.50 per hour for under 16s. Until mid-January, the 14 hour course will cost £5 an hour, payable in two instalments. This includes use of machines, a workbook, learning materials and refreshments. There are no extras. One of the familiar sounds of West Swindon has been missing since the end of September writes Rob Buries vicar of St Mary's Church, Lydiard Tregoze, (in the Parish of West Swindon and the Lydiard s). The bells of St Mary's Church (the church in Lydiard Park) are silent at the moment andThursday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays are not quite the same. If you go to the park and visit the church you will see scaffolding around the tower because the parapet, pinnacles and tower roof of our lovely old building are being repaired in order to make them safe and watertight. This is an expensive business, and whilst most of the cost of the repairs has been raised by members of the congregation, we invite others to help us too. We hope to have the familiar sound of the bells back again for Christmas. Many of you have special links with St Mary's for all sorts of reasons, perhaps a wedding or a bap-

Starry night tour and midwinter tales Steve Upton, Senior Countryside Ranger invites you along A great deal of work is planned for Lydiard during the winter. The HaHa is to be extended, renovating the original structure. This is part of the historical restoration ofLydiard- An information panel should beinplace in the Visitor Centre explaining this project in the near future. Some further thinning of trees will be taking place, most notably at the rear of the walled garden. This is part of the landscape restoration programme and is being done to allow the remaining trees more space and light to encourage their growth. The rangers are busy compiling the programme of spring and summer events. Any group who would like to bookus to give talks or guided walks on any countryside related topics are invited to book now. On Tuesday8 Novemberwe have an event called Starry Starry Night. This is an opportunity for everyone to learn a little about the winter night sky, finishing with a cup of warm soup. There are a few places remaining on our Midwinter Tales event on 21 December. Join us on the midwinter solstice around the fire to hear stories and music to brighten this, the darkest of nights. Thamesdown or what?? At the beginning of October, the Swindon Evening Advertiser gave over a huge amount of space to a campaign calling on Thamesdown Council to change the town's name to Swindon, in advance of a decision on the future of the Borough by the Local Government Review. Continuing our series of reports by Councillor Tony Mayer, Leader of Thamesdown, on Swindon as a unitary authority, he addresses the issue of a new name for the Borough Council when the change is made. What's in a name? People need to feel a sense of identity with the area in which they live and this is reflected both in the character and the name of that area. That is why the issue of the name of the Borough has arisen at this time, when we are about to enter into a new phase of our history with the reorganisation of local government. In 1974, the name 'Thamesdown' reflected the new authority, merging the old Borough ofSwindon and theHighworth Rural District Council. We now need to examine whether there is a case for a change of name with the new council. We are anxious that this is not a decision taken by the Council in isolation, but reflects the views of the local population, as expressed through a proper consultation. We will be deciding in the near future exactly what form that consultation will take. We need to take into account the views of the people of the urban areas of Swindon, its neighbouring parishes and the more rural areas of the Borough.

While a name change will be a relatively easy matter, city status is an accolade rarely given and we must provide a detailed case now, with an aim of achieving this status in the year 2000. Having said all this, the issue of the name should not be allowed to overshadow the very important matters with which we will have to deal as a new unitary authority. We will need to merge the services currently provided by the Borough Council and County Council and we will need to pay particularattention to specific services such as the challenge of creating one of the best education services in the country. The people of the Borough will rightly expect an improvement in services when we become a unitary authority and that improvement will be our top priority.

When we move to become a unitary authority we must maintain public support. Of course, having a name which is popular inside the Borough and to which people relate, and recognised outside the Borough When will this happen? Women Out West is a group which meets weekly in term time. If you area woman, with orwithout young children and you are at home during the day why not come along? Recently we have enjoyed a talk about healthy eating and the Hay Diet and have organised our own dried flower arranging workshop. Our programme for November includes a tour backstage at the Wyvern Theatre on 4th, a speaker from the Samaritans talking about

their work on 11th, a coffee morning on 18th and a Christmas craft morning on 25th. We meet on Friday mornings in the large meeting room in Community Suite at the Link Centre from 9.30am to 11.30am. The Mayor of Thamesdown will be visiting children at a brand new nursery to be opened in the Delta Business Park, Westlea in January. Headstarts day-care and educational nursery school, with schools in Newbury and Basingstoke, are now registering children and their new nursery will be open for viewing between 12 and 23 December. The new nursery will be managed by Sheila Cracknell from Freshbmok, formerly a teacher at

Toothill School. The facilities are large enough to cater for 62 children, cared for in separate age groups from3 months to5 year olds. Spotlight on pensioner poverty in 1995 Age Concern Thamesdown wants to know what pensioners across the Borough haveto say about theirlives. The organisation will be running a campaign next year highlighting the effects of low incomes on older people's quality of life. The campaign will be launched with a major new report into the effects of poverty. Age Concern Thamesdown Director Jo Osorio said the views of older people are going to be an integral part of the report. "We would value any comments from older

people about how they manage nowadays. The future of the state pension and the retirement age is being debated nationally - what do you feel about these issues? Should state support be limited to those in greatest need - or is it a basic right? Do older women get a raw deal?" Whatever your views, Age Concern would like to hear from you. Parents of youngsters who attend the Swindon ju-Jitsu Club at Greendown were entertained to an evening of ju-jitsu demonstrations and fighting techniques in early October, in aid of Cancer and Leukemia in Children, CLIC. Senior club instructor Baj Bharj and Steve Cole, who both lost their fathers to cancer, decided to organise the event. Sixty children took part and parents donated £350.
