Westlea welcome arch celebrates ten years Sheila Mitchell attended Westlea School's birthday party

Pupils and staff of Westlea School assembled on 22 October with parents and members of Westlea toddler and playgroup to celebrate the school's tenth birthday by opening a permanent, decorated 'Welcome Arch' in front of the main entrance. Master of cermonies headteacher Neil Griffiths conducted the proceedings and reminded everybody of the important and good things Westlea School stands for. Community artist Marie Brett, who worked with the children to create the decoration on the arch, lit a birthday racket which sparkled in the blue sky above the gathered school. Birthday girl, ten year old Sabrina Cummins, planted ten tulip

bulbs and helped Play Officer Paul Ryan plant a honeysuckle which will climb the arch. Given the honour of opening the arch by cutting a ribbon were longest serving teachers Judith Golec and Pam Woollard, who havebeen teachers throughout the school's ten years. After everybody had passed through the arch, parents had coffee in the school hall whilst the children enjoyed a day of fun and games. The arch is decorated with the word 'Welcome' upon which ideas contributed by the children have been painted - love hearts, fish, the world -and the word 'welcome' in many different languages

College opens doors to parents and new students Schoolpupils with theirGCSEs coming up have the chance to plan their future after their exams when New College holds an open evening on Thursday 25 November, 6pm to 9pm. The College, off Queens Drive, Swindon has a wide range of level and technical education courses available and these will be featured

Intel inside college New College recently became one of only twelve Intel Personal Computer Learning Centres in the world, and the only one in Britain. It was selected for a major education initiative to mark Intel Corporation's twenty-fifth anniversay. The company, which is one of the world's largest computer chip manufacturers and has its UK base in Swindon. New College received 22 Intel personal computers, laser printers and a colour scanner to allow students to pursue a wide range of computer applications. The resource room is used for college tuition and adults pursuing re-training courses. Kids Jam for the Lord Hundreds of children enjoyed competitions, games and learning Bible stories during a week's intensive youth work at Freshbrook Church during October. Using the title JAM - Jesus And Me - Scripture Union children's workerSteve Hutchinson led a team of Freshbrook Church volunteers on five evenings, culminating in an evening for parents to join in and see what the children had been doing. Church secretary Ruth Wright said that 318 different children had attended the JAM sessions, 220 on one evening. "The church youth workers were aware that many children have very little contact with the church. They wanted to organise a fun event to share the message of the Bible, and show the community the church is for them." She said that the volunteers found that 71% of the 318 children attending JAM were not regular church attenders. They hope that some of the children will join the one hundred who already go to Freshbrook Church each Sunday. There is a Bible Club on Monday evenings,

Swindon IVC, the sports and social club for married and single people, has arranged another course of Le Roc dance lessons in West Swindon. The rock and roll jive has been dubbed the 'dance of the Nineties'. Although it is possible to do the steps to almost any beat and tempo, it is best danced to music from the SO's and 60's. Le Roc also known as French Jiving, has become very popular around the country, but it wasn't until April this year that is was introduced here when experienced instructors were brought in to teach basic moves. Lessons, held every Wednesday evening, cost ÂŁ3 for each one hour session. Not having a partner shouldn't pose a problem. Peter Swinyard is impressed with the latest offering from Sweden A new Saab is a rare event indeed. The last all new model was the 9000 of1986. Before that you have to go back to the 1967 Saab 99. Now with the new 900, what one does not do in the presence of personnel from the Saab Press Office, is to say 'Cavalier.' For, thanks to General Motors links, the floorpan and one of the engines of the new car is pure Cavalier.

The family resemblance to the old model is clear but brought up to date. Available now as only a five-door hatchback, three door and convertible styles will be along in the spring. For now, you can have four cylinderbalancer-shaftengines in2.0 and 2.3 litre guises and a 2.5 litre V6, the latter initially only with automatic transmission. A turbo will be along later as the performance derivative. I recently had the opportunity to drive these new models on the country roads of Wiltshire prior to the UK launch. I started with the 2.3 automatic. First impressons were favourable, with a very comfortable driving position aided by the longitudinallyadjustable steering column (with an airbag in the wheel). The seat was gloriously supportive and all the controls, in the old cliche, fell readily to hand. A carry-over from traditional Saabs is the floor-mounted ignition key whichcan onlybe removed with the transmission locked - in Park on automatics and reverse on manuals. The engine is smooth and sweet and the car moves along deceptively quickly, but there is little zing or excitement to progress. This is a car for long journeys for the non-driver. Even more in this vein is the V6 very powerful and extremely smooth but no real ball of fire. Refinement is excellent with hardly a whisper of noiseat high speed and a very comfortable ride, enhanced in this version by the smell of leather

handling seemed to sharpen up in sympathy and my co-driver commented that I was clearly enjoying my drive. How true! Until the turbo turns up next year, this car is the driver's choice. Jason Scott Lee plays Bruce Lee in Dragon Nevertheless, Lee broke Hollywood's colour barrier against Asian actors and inspired a generation of action heroes through his fims. Jason Scott Lee ('Last of the Mohicans') - no relation to Bruce Lee - plays his childhood idol while Lauren Holly (Sky TV's 'Picket Fences') portrays Lee's strong independent wife Linda whose biography was heavily drawn from for the movie. Other supporting stars include Michael Learned ('The Waltons'), Robert Wagner ('Heart to Heart'), celebrated Hong Kong material artist John Cheung and Thai Kickboxing champion Ong Soo Han. Van Williams, who stared with Lee in 'The Green Hornet' and Shannon Lee, Bruce and Linda's 24 year-old daughter, make cameo appearances in the film. The real star of the film of course is Lee, who is recreated through scene-stealing movie clips like the famous ice house fightfrom 'Fists of Fury' and the classic hall of mirrors climax from 'Enter the Dragon'. This latter film premiered three weeks after Lee's death in 1973 of swelling of the brain, although Lee insisted throughout his life that he was haunted by demons. Lee's son must have been haunted by the same ones as he was accidently killed afew months ago when agun backfired on him.

Under 5's injury prevention called for Health workers across the town are making a big effort to help parents prevent injuries to their under fives. And to help parents with young children cope with emergencies, local Health Visitors are organising a four week First Aid course in November in conjunction with St John Ambulance. In the first six months of this year 285 West Swindon under fives were taken to the PMH casualty unit for treatment. Put another way, each week twelve pre-school children from the area are treated at the hospital. This figure does not include the injuries dealt with at doctor's surgeries. West Swindon Health Centre managerGuy Montezuma said staff based at the centre have a wide brief to help parents see where dangers might be around the home. "Health Visitors take over from the midwife service and make their first visit to the home fourteen days after birth. They pass on a wide range of child care information and we've produced a series of leaflets on accidents in the home. Each one is suitable for the age of the child. "I know there's a lot to do when you're looking after a baby or toddler, and a lot to look out for, but parents need to be vigilant at all times to minimise the potential dangers around the house and when you're outside." He said the number of cases involving injestion of pills and harmful liquids like bleach were down because of tamper proof bottles and safety catches, but head injuries,bmken limbs and bad bruising was high because it is difficult to foresee every harmful situation. Parents can receive a leaflet about helping to keep your child safe from their Health Visitor or by calling 877233

First Aid for parents with children under 6 months A course at the Health Centre run by St John Ambulance, covering basic first aid and resuscitation takes place on Wednesday evenings (17 & 14 November, and 1 December) is available to 14 parents. June Bradley writes Our 1 October cake stall in aid of the Prospect Appeal at the West Swindon Centre was a great success. We were sold out by noon. On a beautiful day in October some of us enjoyed an awayday to France without leaving Wiltshire. At Trowbridge Civic Hall the visit' began with a speaker from the Melksham twinning organisation. A French meal followed - no frogs legs or snails. We ate soup, salad, cheeses and fruit. Next we were taught a fun way to learn French. I never thought it could be so easy! Another speaker talked on the differences and similarities between us and the French, our attitudes and way of life. A super day. Our November meeting is the annual Craft and Produce Show. This year we have various classes including shepherds pie, baby clothes and home made jewellery. Many of the items we make for the show are then donated to charities. If these kinds of activities appeal to you there are many more on offer. Why not come to one of our meetings and find out about them. Alaska trip talk available A teacher who spent her summer holidays on a scientific project in a remote part of Alaska is looking for groups interested inseeingherslides and hearing her talk about the trip. Lynda Thompson from Eastleaze accompanied multiple sclerosis sufferer Ann Buckle from Wokingham on an Earthwatch team of volunteers and scientists researching the fragile taiga environment near the Arctic Circle. Whilst Ann in her wheelchair carried out laboratory work at base camp, Lynda spent her days collecting insect samples from creeks and measuringtheconditionof'pingos,' domes of permanently frozen ground under a thin cover of earth and plantlife. "A fifth of the world's surface is permanently frozen and the project, which has been going for several years, is trying to find out how it works," said Lynda. "There were

nine people in the team, mostly volunteers who provided back-up to the scientists organising the research. They were terrific teachers; we learnt an enormous amount about ecology and conservation "We were told to keep a look out forbears, moose and wolves, but we only saw droppings on the tracks we used to walk to the research sites. However we had to keep food locked ina strong traileras bears are know to make night raids. We couldn't even keep a packet of peanuts in our tents." Lynda is keen to give talks and slide shows about her Alaska trip. She also has an illustrated talk about voyages on tall ships. News from Lydiard Pre-Vocationalcourse students from West Oxfordshire College atWitney spent two days in October working in Lydiard Park to create a new footpath. Between the end of August and the first week of October, there were 15 actual or attempted burglaries in a small area of Ramleaze and The Prinnels,Shaw. In a strange way it is encouraging to see the percentage of attempted burglaries increasing compared to actual break-ins. Obviously each attempt was intended to be a full burglary, but the offender has given up either because of improved security, being disturbed or maybe even police patrols. I see this as a confirmation that improved security and awareness does work It's not just an advertising message. I'm sure you would rather suffer slight damage from an attempt rather than the shock and trauma of a full burglary. Last month I raised the thorny subject of problems with groups of youngsters in West Swindon. TumhamGreeninFreshbrookhas had media attention in the past few weeks due to the involvement of a local councillor and the Swindon MP. I have even heard wild talk of 'vigilante' groups being set up. I do not say that the problems in this location have been exaggerated because no one can appreciate the stress involved unless they live with it. But I do think that a sense of proportion is required. Turnham Green is by no means the only area to suffer gatherings of young people. We have increased the nurnberof foot and mobile patrols in these problem areas and these will continue. Vigilantes? Such talk helps no one. The word conjures images of people prepared to use measures outside the law to achieve what may have started out as noble objectives. We cannot condone such action and what about the old adage about two wrongs? For those among you who wish to take positive action to help your community, why not joinus as members of the special constabulary? More and more of our special constables are working within their local communities and I see no reason why this should not increase When on duty a special constable has the

same powers and protection as a regular officer. I'm all in favourof positive action, but it has be in the right lawful way and it has be accountable If you would like information about joining the special constabulary, or to talk to an existing officer, please contact me on 528111.

Comment Nobody can accept the inconvenience and aggravation caused by people of whatever age who create noise and cause damage, particularly outside family homes. However the suggestion by a local councillor that Freshbrook has become the'Chicago'of Swindon is an insult to the community. Comparing a relatively peaceful suburb with the slaughter that takes place in gun crazed, big city USA is just plain silly. The local media now portrays Freshbrook as the town's crime capital, though the police say the problems here are modest compared with other areas. For several yearsThe Link magazine has highlighted the needs of young people and predicted the problems West Swindon was going to face by the sheer numbers of teeenagers growing up here. Earlier this year we expressed concern that Wiltshire County Council was cutting a youth worker post in the area, just when more people willing to work with and guide youth are needed. If there is crime the police must have the resources to deal with it. However noisy bored teenagers are hardly a new phenomenon. Our MP proposes to use Parliamentary time to demand more police. He should also call for positive initiatives in the community to support young people and create constructive opportunities in their formative years.

Cash raising source An unemployed salesman from Westlea is directing his enthusiasm and the skills developed on a government training scheme into a full-time job. After a year out of work, Phil Rashid from Westlea joined Windmill Training and Development Services and was involved in many fund-raising ideas including a pub crawl around Swindon. Wiltshire Festival, Lydiard Park From RE Hughes, Lineacre Close, Grange Park Come on, Mrs S White of Yarmouth Close, Toothifi (October Link). If you had actually attended any of the concerts at Lydiard Park I doubt if you would have been so offended. Many, many people including myself made the effort and the result being a most enjoyable weekend which didn't cost the earth. The atmosphere in the Park, on the first night at least, was terrific. I did not attend the other two nights as the music was not really my scene, but in no way was the music so loud as to have kept me awake if I had decided to retire as early as 1140pm! We Brits spend a lot of money each year on our holidays abroad, knowing only too well that there is the chance of being kept awake every night for two weeks by local discos, bands, drunks or people enjoying their holiday 24 hours a day, and yet we still go and usually join in. Isn't this what life is all about? I for one welcome the next concert weekend - my goodness, isn't it time Swindon became alive? Or do we all want to become the staid and prosaic counter parts of the retired community in some parts of the south coast resorts?

From Mrs M Brookes, Stancombe Park, Westlea I wondered how long it would be before some local moaner groaner complained about the noise coming from the open-air evening at the Wiltshire Festival and sure enough a letter swiftly appeared in The Link. Asda used to put on superb, professional frse firework displays, a joy to behold which lifted the hearts of hundreds on cold November evenings. But local moaners had their way and the displays were stopped. And now the Wiltshire Festival comesunderattack. NIMBY(Notln My BackYard) resident Mrs SWhite, last month complained about noise! Be fair, the 'noise' as you call it, was over before midnight and is planned to only happen once a year. Didn't you see or feel the electric atmosphere a nd obvious enjoyment coming from the thousands who attended the eveningperformances? I could hear the standing ovations from where Ilive and was only sorry that I couldn't attend every event. Councillors and council officers should ignore the NIMBYs who will always be with us. Instead let's send our congratulations fora wonderful Festival event which should put Swindon firmly on the cultural map.

Local Lives Throwing light on a SAD problem Did you feel down and unhappy during the long rainy days in October? Did you brighten up on those crisp, sunny days towards the end of the month? Did you dread turning back the clock last weekend? The 'winter blues are well know to many. But some understanding of that depression that creeps up on people at this time of the year has resulted from research conducted over the last ten years. A Swindon victim of the condition known as 'Seasonal Affective Disorder' (SAD) can now offer relief for many people struggling with the same problem. For large numbers of people, the quality and intensity of light they're exposed to has a fundamental effect on behaviour ranging from mild depression and feelings of tiredness right through to drastic changes in mood, personality, ea ting and sleeping habits. Office and factory workers who spend their day under artificial light, and young mothers, often indoors with new babies, can experience this change. Children can also suffer, but their problems can be mistakenly dismissed as awkwardness and even slow learning. Many people who feel tired or 'off colour' visit their G.P. who might see the problem as depression and offer medication. There are many causes of depression and it is crucial to seek medical advice.
