We all want it but when it comes to the crunch there's a good proportion of us who just shrug our shoulders say 'meh' and carry on doing whatever we were doing before whether it's tending the allotment or trying to glean the latest celebrity gossip from Heat magazine. And that is your democratic right to decide not to have your say. We don't have a system in this country like Australia where voting is mandatory. It would probably be a very different political landscape if that was the case. But those same people who decide not to vote are not exactly in a great position to moan about whatever the outcome is after the fact. They can moan but it carries less weight than someone who actually made an effort to get off their couch to change the outcome. Anyway, it's parish council election time across Swindon on Thursday 4 May. Normally, when it comes to

parish elections, apathy does seem to be, unfortunately, the name of the game but I would urge you all to take part as for many of us in Swindon it will be the first time that these parish council elections actually ever take place and if ever there was an open field this would be it. The formation of these parishes has been controversial to say the least with some people against them in principle as they have been foisted upon us in the name of Swindon Borough Council cutting costs leaving us all with increased council tax bills. The Spirit of Swindon: Sport, media and culture: Creating opportunity for rest and play By Tom Wilkes of Spirit of Swindon Poverty, health and education have all featured in our articles so far. The connection between these topics and economic inequality seems clear enough but the link with sport, media and culture is less obvious. Participation in sport and culture, both recreational activities, can provide for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual refreshment and stimulation, distinct from the working and home environments. Approximately 35% of people in Swindon participate in sport at least once a week, figures comparable to the national average, with disabled people and those from lower-socio-economic backgrounds tending to be less active. While council services try to signpost residents on to community based sport and the facilities available, the way many live their lives, for example working unsociable hours or on shifts, makes them less likely to take part in sport during their resting periods. The likelihood of engaging in recreation through culture and sport is linked to education, health and opportunity. The more highly educated a person is, and the higher their income, the more likely they are to participate in active recreation; a link between education and culture recognised and used nationally. As noted in April’s Link, Swindon scores particularly poorly on this criteria. Nevertheless, on the positive side, Swindon residents make greater use of our museums, arts, sports and heritage assets than the average
for England even though the town has fewer of them than the national average. This signals a demand for greater provision, one which the proposal for a new Swindon Museum and Art Gallery will meet. The annual Literature Festival is a good example of an event that offers many opportunities for participation in cultural activities of various forms. Where does media fit in to this picture? Politically or commercially biased agendas have taken over tracts of the media as revenue streams have been declining. Across the Atlantic we have seen how one-sided media channels can feed division and confirm prejudices. In the UK, and here in Swindon, this is less prevalent but still present. Locally, newspapers and magazines are at their best when they act as ‘good neighbours to the town’, providing fair, balanced and accurate coverage for their communities. Part of this involves raising
uncomfortable issues and asking difficult questions, not as a way of gaining listeners or readers but to serve the common good. The factors underlying economic inequality are complex and multiple but there are ways of addressing them. Spirit of Swindon recognises that economic inequality is societal and therefore political, however ideological dynamics sometimes prevent us from facing its challenges. Local Authorities across England have sought to meet increasing costs and financial restraints by selling assets which have affected sport and culture at the ‘grass roots’ level. Although Swindon has, until recently, been better placed than many parts of the country, the number of people employed in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector in Swindon has fallen by 30% over a five year period. What one thing you can do this month (apart from participating in sport and buying a ticket for a Lit Festival event) is to read around each topic and ask awkward questions. Actively seeking alternative voices can be difficult but also rewarding and can encourage all of us to transcend party ideology. Spirit of Swindon has emerged from a gathering of people who want to raise consciousness of the impact of economic inequality and help Swindon offer a lead to other towns and cities in the UK. Arrr you ready for Town Centre Pirate Fest?

Batten down the hatches as Swindon Town Centre will be buzzing with free entertainment and activities for all the family to enjoy next month – inspired by all things pirates. From Friday 2 through to Sunday 4 June the town centre will host a Pirate Fest spectacular to coincide with the launch of the new Pirates of the Caribbean film ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ which opens in cinemas at the end of May. There will be an abundance of free activities designed especially for families. Wharf Green will be transformed into Captain Hook’s Pirate Ship zone, featuring live music and dance, children’s entertainment, competitions and prizes. Activities will include apple
bobbing, pirate limbo, funfair rides and free face painting will be available across the town including the Parade, the Brunel Shopping Centre and Regent Circus. Visitors will also be able to take advantage of lunchtime offers from town centre businesses and hunt for golden treasure in the pirate treasure hunt. Plus, there will be opportunities to meet all your favourite Peter Pan characters across the town centre. The pirates event, which is taking place during school half-term, is the result of partnership working between The Brunel Centre, inSwindon BID Company, The Parade and Regent Circus. An ambitious plan to breathe new life into Swindon’s ailing town centre has been unveiled by Forward Swindon. The organisation has been charged with delivering the Swindon Borough Council Town Centre Masterplan which was published by the Council in 2013. A key challenge – according to Forward Swindon – is to break the cycle of ‘nothing happening’. It argues that potential investors see Swindon as ‘risky’ and are put off by uncertainty surrounding the future development of the town centre. Forward Swindon propose a series of connected schemes within an ‘arc of opportunity’ running north-east from the Railway Heritage Quarter to the station and south east along Fleming Way. A re-organisation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic is also seen as
key to the development of the area. Areas earmarked for development include the Railway Village, the station approach and Kimmerfields. Paul Chamberlain, director of New Partnerships explained: “A key objective of the Delivery Plan is to change investors’ perceptions, through a series of projects that will act as a catalyst for future investment in the area. “Yes, there have been commercial sensitivities, but we also wanted to be ready to emphasise delivery – to have things to point to. We know there have been too many empty promises.” The blueprint has been under wraps for commercial reasons, whilst Forward Swindon concluded a number of land deals on behalf of the council. Swindon 105.5 celebrated nine years since bringing its regionally unique service to the town with the launch of the Daniel Gooch Studio at Liden Library on 23 March. The Station celebrated the anniversary with the launch of its Training Studio, which will be known as the Daniel Gooch Studio with a packed crowd hearing from station volunteers, North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, Covingham and Dorcan Ward Councillor Kevin Parry and the Mayor of Swindon, Cllr Eric Shaw. A specially made plaque was unveiled by the Mayor and creator Colin Hatch, which now sits on the

Controversial incinerator plans in spotlight Controversial plans to create a renewable energy centre at Keypoint in South Marston will go under the spotlight at a special planning meeting next month. The meeting, attended by Developers Rolton Kilbride and members of the SKIP (Stop Keypoint Incinerator Project) campaign group, will be held at the Wyvern Theatre at 6.30pm on May 16. Rolton Kilbride applied last June for permission to build a ‘gasification plant’ which would process 150,000 tonnes of domestic waste a year. The developers say the plant will provide a safe and clean way of generating renewable energy from treated household waste; produce energy that can be used by nearby businesses and help cut operating costs; reduce greenhouse gas emissions The proposal has run into strong opposition. Local residents formed the SKIP campaign and organised a petition against the proposal, which gathered more than 3,000 signatures. More than 100 objections have been sent to the planning department with objectors citing

the impact of HGV traffic and the potential for pollution in the area, particularly should the plant malfunction. SKIP chairman, Robert Ayres, said: “From looking at their submissions so far I do not feel the developers have adequately addressed all the concerns that have been raised.” The SKIP group claim there are errors and inconsistencies in the developers’ greenhouse gas calculations that still need to be resolved.

New CEO appointed Peter Boucher has been appointed as the new CEO at Excalibur Communications. Community News New free schools welcomed
Two new Swindon free schools have been approved by The Government but the number of school places needed in the town still needs to be addressed according to Swindon Borough Council. The two new schools will be Abbey Farm Educate Together Primary School in North Swindon and Badbury Park Primary School in South Swindon. This comes after applications for six free schools were submitted to The Government in the Autumn. Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard said: “We are delighted to get two schools but we believe we still have some capacity issues to address in North Swindon and we will have to sit down and see how the numbers match up. “The council has a statutory responsibility to ensure there is enough school places for young people. It can be very difficult these days because there is a high demand for places. “Since 2004 the Conservative Administration has invested heavily in new schools across the Borough to replace the leaking, crumbling inadequate buildings we inherited. “We haven’t had feedback about
why Great Western Academy was turned down so we don’t fully understand why two were a success and one wasn’t. We would like to understand for any future bids that go in by providers to ensure they are a success.” The Labour Group Shadow Lead for Education, Cllr Carol Shelley, said: “I welcome government investment for new schools in areas where they are needed and I congratulate the academy trusts on their successful bids. “However it is worrying that The Government has turned down another free school in an area that is again needed. This goes to the heart of why Labour is against the government’s Free Schools programme. Rather than solely focussing on delivering school places in areas where they’re needed, it’s a popularity contest based on factors not exclusively related to increasing school places."
Ambassadors come out in force for Switch On To Swindon
The great and the good of the town’s business community turned out on Thursday 6 April for a Switch On To Swindon networking breakfast. Munching on bacon baps and drinking coffee, the attendees heard from several speakers including Jenny Groves, the newly appointed chair of The Swindon Place Board, the private sector-led body that is driving the Switch On To Swindon campaign. Switch On To Swindon is driven by local businesses and community groups to support and deliver the changes they want to see. The campaign is based on similar initiatives from across the country that have already brought in significant investment for their regions, including Doncaster and
Coventry. The breakfast event, which took place at The National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC) was attended by ambassadors, who are community-minded and business people who have signed up to support the campaign. Other speakers included estate agent Richard James, Kris Talikowski who runs The Core juice bar in Old Town and Harvey Fremlin, one of the employee-owners of NSBRC. Switch On To Swindon is looking for more Ambassadors from all ranges of business and community organisations to join the campaign to show people inside and outside of Swindon what the town has to offer. House and Home Swindon property development boom is great for buyers It’s an exciting time for the development of Swindon with the town seeing a huge increase in the building of new homes in recent years with thousands of new properties that are earmarked for the town. Most recently, plans have been given the go-ahead to create a development of 147 flats and 293 houses as the second stage of a development at a site near Marlborough Lane. Construction on the site, which will include a mix of two, three and four bedroomed homes, flats and affordable housing, is set to begin in the summer and the first residents are set to move in next spring. Other developments around the town include the ambitious 2,000 home Tadpole Gate project on a 179 hectare site to the north of Swindon, near Blunsdon. Crest Nicholson, David Nicholson and Bovis Homes are among the companies involved in the on-going project. Building on a greenfield site at the edge of Swindon, the development promises panoramic views of where the Wiltshire Downs meet the Cotswolds. Golden Oldies beat the blues by raising the rafters An award-winning charity that addresses isolation amongst the elderly through its fun daytime singalongs wants to reach out to more people across the Swindon area. The Golden-Oldies launched 11 years ago in and around Bath and Bristol with just four sessions. This has grown now to over 150 across South West England, South Wales, Essex, The Midlands and North Yorkshire. New sessions starting in Exeter, Liverpool and Cornwall later this year will see the total reach 200. These are taken by 50 dedicated freelance session leaders in the town and it enjoys the support of Swindon Borough Council. Its popular monthly daytime singing and activity session at Coleview Community Centre, Towcester Road, started in 2015 and is led by Alison Dawn. The next session is from 10.30am to 11.30am on Thursday May 4. The songs are the memory-evoking pop tunes of the 50s onwards, including of course the hits of Sir Cliff Richard, the Patron of GoldenOldies. Founded by renowned West of England choir leader Grenville Jones who originates from Swindon, he is always quick to point out that Goldies is not about singing in a
choir; “We simply try to give people something that they can look forward to each month. A reason to get out and enjoy being with others, making friends, singing and smiling. We know that for thousands, Goldies is now a very important part of their lives. Come along on May 4 to see what Goldies is all about,” he said. Goldies has won many awards in the past 11 years and featured in the media World-Wide.
Most recently it was awarded top place in the National Voluntary Arts Awards and there has also been considerable recognition for its intergenerational programme with schools across the UK. We're making learning fun Moredon Primary and Nursery School have had a term packed with fun, excitement and valuable lessons. ‘People Who Help Us’ has been part of a recent focus this term for the nursery children. They’ve been on outings to various places and have been lucky enough to have visits from many different people. Their first visitor was a police officer, she explained how her job involved keeping everybody safe and showed the children her uniform and badge. The following week the children had the chance to dress up in firefighter suits. When Davina Sparks from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service came in - she spoke about the serious dangers of playing with fire. A nurse was the next exciting visitor, who taught the children how to find their pulse and listen to their heartbeat. A particularly enjoyable activity the children took part in this term was a recycling workshop, carried out by Pam Jones from Swindon Borough Council. The children learned about why we use different types of bins for
different types of rubbish. The workshop proved to be a valuable lesson, as on a local walk to the Manor Garden Centre the children were disappointed to spot so much litter down the pathways. Whilst at the Garden Centre, the children discovered all different types of plants and bought some to help brighten up the outside of the nursery. The last visit the children made was to the local post office, where they bought stamps and posted Mother’s Day cards. This term has been really busy for the children, but has been packed with fun experiences and lessons, provided at Moredon Primary and Nursery School. The ‘outstanding’ nursery, led by a qualified teacher, has space for up to 52 children a year, offering 15 hours a week in either morning or afternoon sessions. Commonweal students rise to the fundraising challenge

A group of Commonweal School students have risen to the challenge of raising funds for poverty-stricken Romania. The gauntlet was thrown down by Excalibur Communications CEO James Phipps, who also owns the Link Magazine. James, a former pupil of Commonweal School, challenged a 30-strong group of high-achieving year 9 pupils to raise as much money as possible in 11 days – from an initial investment of £11 each. James, a keen supporter of the school, stumped up £300 and the school added a further £30 to ensure all students had the £11 challenge money. “To raise over £2,500 in just 11 days is an incredible achievement and they will have learnt lessons for life. "It was a great innovative programme by Commonweal School to engage with them in a different way and the results speak for themselves.” The total raised was £2,563.40. The students raised money in a variety of ways, including cake sales, sponsorship from their
friends, family and community groups and running stalls. Top fundraisers were Jasmine Sheppard and Bonny Robins who raised a mammoth £664.33, Aasiyah Faizal, who raised £329.99 and Livvy Harrison who raised £322. James praised the school that shaped him: “Commonweal was a really positive experience for me. "I could not have had the career I have had without the grounding and support I had from the school, as it hugely influenced my values." Their teacher Nick Bartlett said: “I am completely overwhelmed by the lengths the students have gone to, to fulfil the challenge. "It is fantastic they really embraced the idea and I can’t thank them enough for their hard work and commitment. "They raised much more than we thought they would. Excellent work and a huge congratulations to our scholars.” l Long serving Commonweal Head Teacher Keith Defter plans to step down from the post in August 2017. Acting head teacher Bob Linnegar will take on responsibility for the role while a new head is appointed.

Loco legend is star of show at new Steam exhibition A Swindon-built locomotive will be the star turn in a new exhibition that opens at Steam on Saturday 8 April. King George V returned to Swindon's Steam Museum on a low loader in November 2015 and received plenty of admiring glances as it made its way into the town from the M4. The National Railway Museum in York loaned the locomotive to Steam in preparation for the town’s Swindon175 celebrations last year, which honoured Swindon’s railway heritage. Now the engine will be the focus of attention once more as ‘King George V – A Locomotive Legend’ opens at the museum this weekend. The exhibition celebrates the 90th anniversary of the building of the famous locomotive. Showing objects, documents and photographs from STEAM’s collection, the exhibition explores the story of King George V, from its design, build and operation; through to its decline under British Railways and eventual return to glory when it was preserved as part of the National Collection. Council’s Leadership Manager for Museums and Heritage, said: “Swindon produced many magnificent engines, but King George V is arguably the most famous of them all. “The King has a very interesting past and this new exhibition encapsulates this history perfectly and I would urge everyone to visit STEAM and learn about the engine
which made Swindon a world beater.” The locomotive was designed by Charles B Collet and was the GWR’s most powerful 4-6-0 engine. KGV was the first ‘King’ Class built at Swindon Works in June 1927, and was shipped to the United States in August 1927 to feature in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s centenary celebrations. On its return
to Britain, the locomotive resumed operation on the GWR network, hauling high speed passenger services such as the Cornish Riviera Express. Charity nights going strong at Swindon restaurants
Started in 2008, popular Indian restaurant Bengal Square in Peatmoor has consistently run charitable fundraising nights donating all profits to worthy causes across the Swindon area. Now, the restaurant is expanding this charitable evening to their newly reopened sister site Mantra in Old Town.
Held every Monday and Tuesday at Bengal Square, and every Tuesday at Mantra, the charity nights have raised over £100,000 to date which has been shared amongst local causes from youth football teams to Macmillan cancer research. Railway photographer celebrates birthday with the King From The Archives with Link founding publisher Roger Ogle May sees the ninetieth anniversary of King Geoge V, probably the most famous locomotive to be built in Swindon Works. Former Works photographer Roy Nash was also born in May 1927. Ten years ago The Link featured the King and Roy on their joint eightieth birthday. The King is now the centre of a new exhibition at Steam Museum until December to mark 90 years of the first of 29 in the King class of locomotives. Roy left Pinehurst School at the age of 14 to become an office boy at Vickers Armstrong, South Marston and started his apprenticeship in the Railway Works in 1941, qualifying to join the drawing office at the age of 21 in 1948 where he stayed for 38 years, until the Works shut down. The threat of closure looked imminent with the arrival of Works manager Harry Roberts in 1972, but against expectation, he brought forward a plan to revitalise Swindon and Roy found himself in the right place at the right time. He said: “One day I was called to see Harry to be told management was going to have a go at
King George V which was built in the Swindon Works is celebrating its ninetieth birthday this year with a special exhibition at STEAM diversifying the Works by attracting engineering contracts. He needed publicity and wanted me to take pictures of everything and be ready to take photos of visiting VIPs. I was more than happy, but my boss wasn’t pleased as I was out of the office so much; I was free to go anywhere I wanted.” Roy’s interest in photography had been sparked at the age of seven when his father showed him how prints were made, commenting that he was hooked by the magic of a negative image appearing in a tray of chemicals in the darkroom. When he started working Roy quickly found success in GWR, and
later British Rail, staff association photographic exhibitions and competitions. Always prepared to record events for posterity, even though it was his last day of employment, Roy was ready with his camera on 27 March 1986 to photograph the emotions on the faces of colleagues as the famous Works hooter sounded for the last time. Roy continued taking pictures for the British Rail regional public relations office on a freelance basis including the visit of Diana, Princess of Wales when she came to Swindon in 1989. In retirement Roy has spent a

lot of time scanning and printing images from his collection. “I’ve always gone for top of the range cameras and bought my first Leica in 1945.” he said. “It cost £60 and I’ve still got it; my mother was shocked at the small fortune I had spent. I can’t imagine what her reaction would have been if she knew the cost of the digital Leica I bought in 2008. “I honestly don’t know how many pictures I’ve taken or how many prints I have in boxes all around the house. It must be quite a few thousand.”

guide to live music in Swindon through May Now that we are all getting over being stuffed with easter eggs and loud noises from VicFest in April (which was incredible by the way) we can get ourselves prepared for another monthly jaunt through the live music offerings in Swindon. But firstly, are you one of those people who has always watched The Voice on TV and thought "I could have a go at that"? Then May is your chance as Level III on Commercial Road hosts an Open Mic audition to appear on this year's show, taking place on 5 May. Bring your instrument, a few songs and, of course, your voice to be part of this popular TV phenomenon. Mixing things up a little at The Victoria on 12 May, cult hero John Otway will be bringing his chaotic live show to Swindon once again,
taking to the stage as only he knows how. Known for his overly energetic performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test back in 1977 (where he managed to leap onto an amplifier and land precariously straddling a large wooden box) Otway has never really calmed down. Seen to be believed. Keep something left in the tank though, as on 16 May The Vic
will be welcoming those 'teenage dirt-bags' Wheatus for a show that will likely go down in Swindon's musical history books. Swindon Arts Centre will be in full flow on 14 May as the Swing Birds return, flying in to celebrate the anniversary of their sell out performance last time in Swindon. An all-female Big Band with legendary drummer Crissy Lee

And the fun at the Arts Centre doesn't stop there, with Pete Brown, son of Rock’n'Roll veteran Joe, and his new and wonderfully talented bluegrass band The NewGrass Cutters, returning to entertain fans in the town on 27 May. However, the materials and the skills to put the building up came from the Works, including the bricks, trusses for the roof, and magnificent stained glass windows and doors, designed by a Mr Rice, an employee in the Works. The water was supplied via a tunnel that ran from the Works, under the Railway Village and into the basement. As you might expect from Victorian baths, the sexes were segregated, with men swimming in the main pool, and the smaller pool, which is currently out of use, reserved for women and children. The debate over the future of the Health Hydro has highlighted people’s concern over the handling
of heritage, and the blue plaque is a chance for them to turn their passion into something positive. And it will go hand-in-hand with planners’ new vision for the town's future, which now sees old buildings as an asset, rather than a liability. A plaque for the Health Hydro
By Graham Carter of Swindon Heritage magazine The Health Hydro is back in the news - but this time for all the right reasons. Controversially earmarked, earlier this year, for conversion into flats by current occupiers, Greenwich Leisure Ltd, the former Milton Road Baths, which opened in 1892, is the latest focus of Swindon Heritage’s blue plaque scheme. We've launched a crowdfunding page to raise the £400 required to cast and install a plaque on the building - the fifth in the series. Project manager Noel Beauchamp said: “Our first four plaques, which honoured a pioneering suffragette, two war heroes and a film star, underlined the breadth of Swindon’s amazing heritage, but we thought it was time to return to our railway roots for the next one. “It is of national importance because of its links with the birth of the NHS, but it also has huge significance in local history. “And there couldn’t be a better time to put it back on the map, with this year marking the 125th anniversary of its opening.” Along with the extension of the

Mechanics’ Institute in the same year, the baths saw the completion of the social development of New Swindon, where workers had access to facilities that were far better than their counterparts in other industries or other towns and cities. In a period when most of Britain’s workers had no access to permanent washing baths, let alone swimming baths, in Swindon they could even enjoy Turkish baths. The concept of the new building was decades ahead of its time, combining leisure and wellbeing facilties with medical provision, housing consulting rooms and a modern dispensary. Thanks to the boarding-over of the pool, the building was also adapted for other uses over the years, including a makeshift hospital in the First World War, a concert venue, a rollerskating rink and to host dances. Are you a poet but didn't know it? Poetry column by Poetry Swindon’s Maurice Spillane
Have you ever entered a poetry competition? If you are a closet poet it’s a great way to test yourself. Winning poems have a few things in common. The poem should have a cracking opening. You want the judge’s attention straight away. The second is that the last lines should make the judge hold her breath or
at least send her away to reflect. The lines in the middle are fillers but they must be poetic – some images, clever word play but most of all you must be convincing. If there’s a twist that’s a bonus. Finally, you need a good title. Titles like “Spring” or “Walking the Dog” won’t cut it. Here are some examples from a really good poem, “A Leisure Centre is also a Temple of Learning” by Sue Boyle. I bet that title gets your attention! The opening lines are:

Photographer Richard has his eye on the prize Link Magazine photographer Richard Wintle has been shortlisted for a prestigious National Association of Press Agencies award. Veteran snapper Richard, of Calex Picture Agency, will attend an award ceremony at the Grange City Hotel in London on May 12, where the winner will be announced. His shortlisted picture was taken during the County Ground clash between Swindon Town and Fleetwood Town on December 17 2016. Richard said: “I was positioned at the edge of the 18 yard box, quite close to the action. I was shooting away and I knew that I had something, but I wasn’t sure until I had a proper look at half time. I guess I just got lucky with this one because everything came together.” Richard’s photograph captured Swindon Town striker Nicky Ajose frozen in a balletic tumble as he took on Fleetwood Town keeper Alex Cairns. “This frame was one of a sequence of three that I managed to capture but this was the one. It is, to my mind, a great agency picture because it’s a nice tight action shot that would fit several formats.”
Richard’s picture was taken on a Nikon D810 using a Sigma 7200mm lens. He used a shutter speed of 1/800 to freeze the moment.

Try it in a dinghy with Bowmoor Bowmoor Sailing Club near Lechlade will be holding its second and last 'Come and Try' day this year in conjunction with the RYA ‘s Push the Boat Out campaign on the 20 May 2017 from 10.30am until 3.30pm. Bowmoor helms will be on hand to take potential new members out on our lake. Visitors are advised to bring a change of clothing and a towel just in case they get wet. Visitors can come and chat to members of the club to find out more – whether it’s social sailing, enjoying the fresh air on a fine day or competitive racing. They also cater for Windsurfing, Open Water Swimming, Paddle Boarding, RC Boats and Canoeing. The sailing club has just purchased 3 RS Terra dinghies with the help of the Eric Twiname Trust to give junior sailors an alternative choice of boat. These will be made available to junior members for training and racing. Junior and youth training courses are held on a regular basis to improve sailing skills and are a fun way of getting children into the exhilarating sport. Bowmoor Sailing Club is a family

Teams needed for annual dragon boat race On Sunday 25 June the Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix will be holding their 5th annual Dragon Boat Race at Coate Water Country Park. The event is open to anyone over the age of 12 who can form a team and participate in the racing on the day. Each team is encouraged to raise money for local charities. There will be rides, refreshments, stalls etc on the day so it makes for a great family/community day out for everyone. Dragon boats are long, elaborately decorated canoes with a dragon’s
head and tails attached. The sport dates back more than 2000 years to China’s Mi-Lo river about 400BC. Today, with over one million teams competing worldwide, it is the second most popular sport
