Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson opens Abbey House dementia care home North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has officially opened the marketing suite at Abbey House, a new specialist dementia home being built at St Andrew’s Ridge, as a major recruitment drive gets underway. Milestones Trust, the charity behind the £5.5 million development, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of providing care and support to vulnerable people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and dementia this year. Due to open in June, Abbey House will provide for 73 residents over three floors with a focus on providing specialist care. Signalling the launch of a new recruitment drive, John Hoskinson, CEO of Milestones Trust, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new team that will deliver an exceptional service designed to change the face of eldercare and dementia support in Swindon. The design has been carefully thought through to meet Stirling dementia care standards, a framework that ensures the needs of those living in the home with dementia are met. Examples include ensuring that beds are positioned so residents can see bathrooms; using transparent panelled wardrobes and the use of enhanced, moodappropriate lighting. Justin Tomlinson MP said: “It is fantastic to open the marketing suite for this facility, which will be an exciting addition for Swindon. Swindon is very much a town on

the up and this is further evidence that organisations are choosing to invest in our town, creating vital jobs for our local economy.” Abbey House will specialise in providing both residential and nursing care for people across the dementia spectrum, from those who are physically active, to people who may have medical conditions complicated by living with dementia requiring nursing care and those who require end of life care. The facilities include landscaped communal gardens, activity rooms, hairdressing facilities, community café and coffee shop, lounge and dining rooms, and assisted bathrooms.

The Swindon Cares committee met at The Tawny Owl pub in Taw Hill on Friday 1 April to launch plans for community fundraising in the new financial year. The committee, which is now into its 14th year of fundraising, started in 2003 and has so far raised over £234,000 to support charitable, community and voluntary organisations in Swindon. The aim of the Swindon Cares group is to engage in all areas of Swindon’s community, schools, businesses, groups and individuals to support people in the town, with sponsorship from companies such as Zurich Community Trust, Bluefin Insurance, Arkell’s Brewery and Business West helping with the overall fundraising effort. James Arkell, chairman of Swindon Cares, expressed his pride in being involved with the organisation, who in the last fiscal year raised over £18,000 for their selected charities Hop, Skip and Jump and DASH (Discovering Autistic Spectrum Happiness). Mr Arkell said: “We have to acknowledge the support Swindon

Cares receives from the Mayor of Swindon and Swindon Borough Council, who help raise our profile in the community. Every member of our committee is always hard at work.” Also in attendance was the new High Sheriff of Wiltshire, record breaking explorer David Templeman-Adams, who was born in Swindon. Mr Templeman-Adams said: “I fully support the work that Swindon Cares does in the community, these are great charities and they do amazing work in the town. “The charity concert is now a key fundraising opportunity and I have to thank Nicky Alberry for putting in so much hard work to make the evening possible.” A concert for Swindon Cares takes place at Christ Church in Old Town on Saturday 11 June at 7.30pm. Newly appointed High Sheriff for Wiltshire Wiltshire’s new High Sheriff for 2016/17 has been named as Swindon born explorer David Templeman-Adams. The office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular office in England and Wales after the Crown, which appoints High Sheriffs to a region. High Sheriffs in Wiltshire have for many years been active in encouraging and supporting a wide range of activities in both the public and voluntary sectors aimed at enabling offenders or disadvantaged people to achieve their potential as citizens. Volunteer Centre funding eliminated by Swindon Borough Council With the use of volunteers as a key element in central and local government’s drive to soften the impact of austerity policies, a Swindon signposting service linking people keen to get involved has had its total annual budget of £35,000 cut by Swindon Council. Volunteer Centre Swindon runs a monthly column in the Link below - listing a few of the many requests for help by more than 300 local groups and branches of large charities in the town. Each year it has contact with more than 1,500 people interested in giving their time to help others. The council will continue to support volunteers through its localities team but this will be on a small scale to back up council social care responsibilities, like Swindon Circles which supports vulnerable older people in their homes. Volunteer Centre director Sue Dunmore said: “We have been working with the council since

the draft budget was published in November. The cut in funding is a serious blow when utilising volunteers is seen as so important. Our universal service is available to anyone; people looking for volunteer placements are amazed by the number of organisations we’re in touch with and the range of opportunities we can offer. “We’ve had time to re-focus our priorities and are seeking alternative sources of funding which we hope will come to fruition by the early summer.” The centre which has been an independent charity since 1999 is based in the same office as Voluntary Action Swindon which has received a one year contract with a reduced budget to focus on support to small organisations, funding and representation. I worry about the impact on the expertise available at Volunteer Centre Swindon and on all those who are volunteering already.” A Swindon Council spokesman said: “The council is committed to promoting volunteering as set out in its Priorities and Pledges and this has not changed, despite the reduction in funding for Voluntary Action Swindon (VAS). “Although the funding apportioned to the Volunteer Centre has now stopped, the council has agreed to provide £46,000 in funding to VAS so it can continue to offer governance and funding support to small organisations as well as representing the third sector. “The council will continue to promote volunteering through its Localities team.”

Lack of clarity in parishing says Shaw Residents Association Swindon Council’s year long governance review, considering whether the parts of the town which do not fall within a parish council should be parished, has reached its half-way point. After a large number of daytime engagement sessions across the town, citizens were asked to submit viewpoints by 31 March. Council officers will report their finding to the cabinet in June before a formal period of consultation starts. The response by Shaw Residents' Association (SRA) makes it clear that providing concise and informed comment was difficult as the council ‘consultation’ did not have a focussed set of questions. It says: ‘Clearly parishes could bring both positives and negatives to communities, but since no scope has been provided to the consultation, we are not in a position to make an informed judgement within our feedback. ‘For example, we have not been provided with a list of services a parished Shaw ward would own; indeed we do not know where the boundaries would be drawn.

‘Clearly there is no such thing as a free lunch, yet there are no details in the consultation on estimated precepts or indeed the costs associated with the additional administration a parish would require.’ The association suggests parishing is an excuse to create another tax raising body to pay for services like grass cutting and litter picking which are currently provided by the council. It also wants to know if parishing is part of a bigger picture whereby Swindon merges with Wiltshire Council, a process of change by stealth rather than change by consensus. Should Swindon agree to proceed with parishing, the first elections to the new parish councils will take place in May 2017. However it will fall upon Swindon Borough ward councillors to set the first parish precept (tax) as part of the budget making cycle which has to be agreed by the end of February next year. Wroughton based vocal/musical therapist Paula Hills is hosting a musical and vocal sound healing/ therapy event at The Cause in Chippenham on18 June, supporting Swindon Trauma Group. The not-for-profit session is open to people who would like to improve their health and take part in testing Paula’s theory that with perfect sound and vibrations, ‘once is enough’. For those unfamiliar with musical/ vocal sound healing therapy, it is recognised as being useful in the treatment of depression or anxiety. Progress made at community broadband meeting? UKBNetworks met with community members at an open meeting in early April at Redhouse Community Centre to discuss the next stage of the Superfast Swindon initiative, a Swindon Borough Council contract worth £2 million. In attendance were UKBN CEO Nick James, head of networks Graham Currier and members of the ‘NoToSwindon4G’ group who debated the latest plans to erect six or even seven 4G broadband masts at sites along Thamesdown Drive. In February, proposed sites for the 4G masts were rejected at a council planning committee meeting due to campaigning from parish councillors and local people, which has led to UKBN and the council having to look at alternative locations for the 4G delivery system. Mr James said: “It was a great opportunity to meet local residents and exchange views. I found it extremely useful and I think all those attending thought the same judging by the comments we received afterwards. “The positioning of the masts is critical to the number of residents who can receive the Superfast

Swindon service. At the meeting we explained the various options for the location of the masts in North Swindon and how many people would be served by each of the options. “We are now preparing a revised proposal for consideration by the council and BDUK. “We expect to be in a position to present our final proposal by mid May. “In the meantime, we are making good progress in other parts of the borough. We expect to enable a trial of the service to selected homes in the first area in May and that residents will be able to buy the full service from a number of re-sellers from June.” l A trial by BT Openreach to bring fibre optic FTTP ultrafast broadband to North Swindon is continuing to grow. In March, the first homes were connected in Oakhurst as part of the trial and now a further 277 homes in Taw Hill are going to be included making a total of 500 homes. This is according to Damon Bower the vice chairman of Haydon Wick Parish Council.

Bradon students and staff get really muddy for Sport Relief More than £1,000 was raised for Sports Relief on 18 March at Bradon Forest School, Purton through a variety of activities. As well as paying not to wear uniform, there were Zumba sessions at lunchtime and a basketball competition. But the highlight was the run by 150 students and staff which included splashing through a specially created mud section. Headteacher Andrew Morrison and a number of staff set aside all dignity to take part. Headboy, Ben Etheridge, ran the course four times, setting a great example for his fellows. Runner and assistant headteacher, Catherine Chappell, said: “It was a freezing day, so all credit to those who Mud, mud, glorious mud at Bradon Forest took part.”

Looking back to River View School It’s a curiosity that the foundation governing body of what was to become North Swindon’s secondary school decided to name it River View. In March 2006 parents and prospective children met the first headteacher Rachael Mattey to look at the building plans for the North Swindon Learning Campus and discuss admissions procedures. By the time the school opened in September 2007 the governors had change their mind and decided to call it Isambard Community School.

Lions seek new members after successful golden year celebrations

Swindon Lions Club, who in 2015 celebrated 50 years in the town with 12 months of fundraising activities, is looking for new members. Activities in 2015 included raising £15,000 from its annual fireworks display at the Polo Ground and £2,000 from its Santa and sleigh at local supermarkets. In total £20,000 was raised in the anniversary year. The funds were used to help local charities, such as Downs Syndrome Group, Twigs, SMASH, Swindon Talking Newspapers, SCWD,

Teenage Cancer Trust, Women’s Refuge, together with families and individuals through the welfare system. As part of the Christmas collection they sent £500 cheques to Lions Clubs in Cumbria to help with the flooding clean-up. West Swindon, the start of a new city that has yet to emerge In the April Link we met up again with Terry and Theresa Davies, the first couple to move, on 14 March 1976, to Toothill - the initial phase of what was known 40 years ago as the ‘western expansion.’ Their arrival, and the building of some 11,500 homes in West Swindon over the next 20 years, was the outcome of a long planning process that had started in the early 1960s and is still impacting today. Then, as now, central government was looking at population growth and the need for housing and had commissioned a consultant’s study to look at a new city in West Berkshire/North Wiltshire. Swindon rather than Newbury was preferred as the most suitable for expansion, continuing growth which started when the Great Western Railway Company agreed to build a engine maintenance shed in the town 175 years ago. The consultantcy firm envisaged Swindon’s population growing from 100,000 in 1961 to become a city of 400,000 by the year 2000. The 400,000 target was scaled back by central government to around 250,000 people by year 2000, but we’re still well short of that number. Currently there are around

220,000 living within the Swindon Borough boundaries with several thousands more to arrive as Tadpole Farm, the Eastern Villages and infill developments take place. Once Swindon had been identified for major expansion, planners from Swindon, Wiltshire County and Greater London Council produced a report published in 1968 setting out how and where such growth might be achieved. Known as the Silver Book, because of its shiny cover, the report outlined a vast urban area for Swindon City - shown right. But the ambitions of the planners were not to be achieved in the short term. The current boundary of West Swindon, much of which was built in Wiltshire and transferred to Swindon, is now regarded the limit of urban expansion. Growth since has taken place within the borough boundaries, with the exception of Ridgeway Farm and Mouldon View, but in the next phase of strategic land planning from 2026, it is questionable whether Swindon can continue to be contained. Indeed, with the huge changes in local government currently underway, is Swindon now too small, and will it exist as a local authority for much longer?

The Silver Book proposed the town’s boundaries expanding outwards to the dashed red line. It takes in what we know as West Swindon, what was to become Liden and Eldene in the east, and also North Swindon. It also identifies areas which have been fought over at planning enquiries more recently - Tadpole Farm, Ridgeway Farm, Mouldon View and land between Blunsdon and South Marston - all of which are now in the process of being built upon. Also within the red line boundary is Pry Farm, between North Swindon and Purton, which was considered for development about ten years ago and will probably feature in the next Wiltshire Council Core Strategy proposals due in 2026. Interestingly, the development of 4,000 homes at Wichelstowe, the 8,000 proposed for the Eastern Villages, and the Badbury Park development close to Coate Water, did not feature in the Silver Book plan.

Viewpoints on building new east of Swindon villages required by 4 May Swindon Borough Council has published the New Eastern Villages (NEV) planning obligations draft supplementary planning document. The development east of the A419, and on both sides of the A420, is the largest strategic allocation of land within the adopted Swindon Borough Local Plan to 2026. It will comprise 8,000 new homes, 40 hectares of employment land, transport improvements, secondary and primary schools, retail, health, community and leisure facilities. After the Local Plan was adopted in March 2015, it was deemed

necessary to produce the draft supplementary planning document to provide more detailed advice and guidance on the relevant policies with regard to infrastructure provision, management of the development, and details of the New Eastern Villages and the development at South Marston. Royal British Legion launch national campaign for Somme commemorations

The Royal British Legion has launched an ambitious programme calling on communities across Britain to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of the Somme, from 1 July to 18 November 2016. More than one hundred soldiers from Swindon are commemorated on the towering Commonwealth War Graves memorial at Thiepval which records the names of men who fell but were never found to be buried. Ninety five per cent were employees of the GWR Works. People are being encouraged to organise commemorative events, such as a Ride to the Somme initiative, to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, one of the darkest chapters in British military history, during the second year of World War I. Ride to the Somme is a three day cycle ride over 200 miles which will culminate with paying respects at The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval, which lists the 72,195 missing British and African soldiers who have no known grave. Riders will also pay specific respects to members of the Army Cycling Corps who are commemorated at the nearby cemetery in Pozieres. The impact of the Battle of the Somme was felt heavily on a local level because of the introduction of the ‘Pals battalions’, where groups

of friends, colleagues, neighbours and sports teams signed up to fight together. Over the four and half months of bloody fighting, more than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed. To help people hold commemorative events the Legion has created a free toolkit in hardcopy and digital download. The kit features a range of items to support people to host public events or take a personal moment of reflection. Complementing the toolkit, the Legion has partnered with Ballista Media and historian Dan Snow to create a free mobile and tablet app featuring over 250 pieces of multimedia content which bring to life key moments from the battle. It has been commissioned by Mike Pringle of Swindon Heritage who designed and provided the materials. It is being built by Wootton Bassett’s Stainless Supplies. Hop, Skip and Jump celebrate five years of supporting children in need The Hop, Skip and Jump Foundation are celebrating their fifth year of operation in 2016, and praised their partnership with the Swindon Cares group at a launch event in April. The foundation provides support to children with any additional need, from complex physical conditions to special educational needs and behavioural problems. They offer targeted therapy sessions such as after school care, weekend respite, teens and twenties clubs and more to families and young people in the community. Hop, Skip and Jump’s aim is to avoid family breakdown, allowing parents and carers some time away from their full time responsibilities. The Rev. Celia Carter MBE, chairman of Hop, Skip and Jump,

said: “Our close work with social services and the Swindon Cares group gives us a high profile in the local community. Many services will recommend people to us if they feel we can be of value to them. “We have the only immediate mental care facilities outside of A&E in the county at our Upper Shaw Ridge Farm centre. “We also work closely with families of convicted criminals who are from Swindon, helping to deal with the unique challenges this situation creates.” It was announced at the Swindon Cares launch meeting that Hop, Skip and Jump will again be the nominated charity for the group, benefiting from over £18,000 raised last year alone.

Community News ‘We will not be complicit’ say library campaigners Residents have been turning out at libraries around the borough, to show their support for the service at Swindon Borough Council’s ongoing engagement process events. Sarah Church, of Save Swindon’s Libraries campaign, believes that the people should be campaigning against the cuts. She said: ““I think it’s clear that the public don’t want to be complicit in the reduction of the professional service they value so highly. Swindon Borough say that there are no plans on the table yet, but the tenor of the engagement process so far does seem to ask communities how they can help Swindon spend less on libraries. That’s a leading sort of question, and residents are answering instead that they don’t want to see any cuts at all in library services.” The council is looking at a new model of delivering library services to be developed with library users and local people. The proposals will be brought before Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet in June. The council announced in February a reduction in the libraries’ budget of at least £1.5m by 2020. A total of £300,000 will be saved from the library budget this year (2016-17).

New landlords take flight at The Tawny Owl

For only the third time in its 13year existence, The Tawny Owl pub at Taw Hill, which first opened on 23 November 2003, has welcomed new landlords. Dan Brackenbury and his fiancée Tracey Heath have taken over behind the bar of the Arkell’sowned pub. Dan’s face will be familiar to Arkell’s customers at The Sun, Coate Water, which he ran for almost a year before moving to the larger Tawny Owl. Tracey, however, is much more familiar to the hundreds of children at Orchid Vale Primary School where she spent eight years as the administrator. Dan joined Arkell’s last year to run The Sun, but when The Tawny Owl became vacant, it was too good a chance to miss. “You don’t often

get opportunities like the Tawny Owl, so I had to seize the moment, but I didn’t want to do it alone,” he said. “I am thrilled that Tracey has agreed to work alongside me. I just hope she doesn’t miss the school children too much, but this is a lovely community pub so I hope they’ll come and see us with their families.” Between them Dan and Tracey have five children, aged from 11 to 18 years. In fact, Tracey’s 18-year old son, Ben, works at the pub and helped persuade them to take the pub on. Brewery managing director, George Arkell, said: “Having Dan and Tracey running the pub is fantastic. When they’ve settled in they’re planning a range of familyfriendly events – which we’re looking forward to.”

The ever-impressive Mechanics’ Institute has been spectacularly filmed by drone cameras for local feature presentation ‘Railway Town’ by Martin Parry. The feature length film, which was screened at the Wyvern Theatre in April, has been in Martin’s mind for around 35 years. It charts the story of Swindon from its ‘wild west’ beginnings, through problems and triumphs,

and then conveys the mood when the great GWR factory (by then British Rail) closed in March 1986. Martin, who came to the town in early 1980, said he conceived the idea of Railway Town soon after he arrived. “I started to document the railway heritage by interviewing scores of factory workers, filming inside the works and collecting archive material, which is incorporated in the film.”

Purton nursing home Ashgrove House has received an Outstanding rating in their latest report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), making it the only nursing home in Wiltshire to score so highly. It is estimated that of the approximately 70,000 care homes in the UK, only 0.5% currently have the top rating of Outstanding. An inspector from the CQC, the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England, visited Ashgrove House unannounced in January and found the service provided by the home to be outstanding in terms of being caring, responsive and well-led. The report highlighted the positive effect the home’s ethos of ‘treat people how you would like to be treated’, combined with excellent, caring staff, has on residents. It recognised that

Ashgrove House supports people to achieve their aspirations, such as increased independence, using an example of how staff helped a previously bed-bound resident get up and become more mobile. The inspector received a resounding response from staff, residents and family members that people felt safe, staff were welltrained and well-supported and family members knew their loved ones were looked after excellently. Food was also praised, with meals described as ‘appetising and well presented’. Ashgrove House specialises in care for the elderly and people with dementia, as well as those with physical disabilities and terminal illnesses aged 30 and above. Following a very successful drive in 2014 covering 30 counties in 30 hours and raising over £1,500 in 2015, Amanda Butler, regional volunteer fundraising ambassador for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF), has set herself the challenge of highlighting the plight of elephants. 35,000 elephants are being killed every year – one elephant every 15 minutes. Amanda and her husband Barry, from Peatmoor, will do this by visiting 35 elephant named ‘watering holes’ across England, one pub or restaurant for every 1,000 elephants killed. On Saturday 2 July they will start

at Colchester Zoo, who support the Elephant Orphanage Project in Zambia that DSWF set up in 2007. The couple are charting their progress on an ‘Ele-meter’ with £20 donations to feed a baby elephant for a week to £2000 to provide a GPS tracking collar and monitoring for two years. Isambard financial wizkids could win trip to New York Four students from Isambard Community School in North Swindon have beaten 30,000 others and the stock market to reach the 2016 final of the Student Investor Challenge run by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (ifs). The ‘No Money Men’ team will compete against seven other teams for a chance to win a trip to New York and £2,000 for their school. To get to the final, students Kieran Baily, Tommy Slade, Jess West and Sofia Bulut, pictured right, had to negotiate a series of tough financial challenges, having profitably invested two virtual portfolios of £100,000 over a threemonth period, before successfully predicting the rise and fall of various assets and equities at the semi-final stage.

Trustees needed to help special schools combine into a multi-academy Uplands School in North Swindon is aiming to convert to academy status in June and is looking for volunteers to join the governing body and board of trustees to help it achieve major expansion plans. The Brunel Special Educational Needs Multi Academy Trust will bring together Uplands and Brimble Hill schools to meet the needs of complex learners aged 5 to19 by providing unique, exceptional and innovative learning, working and living provisions. A shadow governing body has already submitted a bid to open a free school in 2017 catering for autistic students aged 11 to 19.

Tregoze sustains Euro links for 13th year Although funding to carry out school exchanges across Europe is now much harder to obtain, Tregoze Primary School in Grange Park has embarked on another year long project to promote educational and cultural contact. The school is thought to be the only one in Swindon which has secured a grant under the Erasmus scheme and in March welcomed 8 teachers and 16 children from schools in Italy, Spain, Poland and Germany which participated in the last series of exchanges. The theme for this year is Fairy Tales, Fiction and Friendship and focusses on how reading is taught in different countries. Tregoze

Headteacher Rhian Cockwell explained: “Our Church of England schools inspection found us outstanding, but we felt we need to explore Christianity within a multi-

cultural environment and how this fits with British values. “Art specialist Terry Menham worked with the children to write poetry and create bright colourful banners and the results are fantastic. The children are really proud to see lines of their poetry and art on display around the school and we’ve had lots of positive comments from visitors.”

The NSPCC is calling for businesses to come forward to sponsor a new book project to be presented in junior schools. The book, Sadsville, was written by NSPCC ambassador BBC Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts. In 2014 the NSPCC launched its schools programme to take assemblies in junior schools across the UK to all nine and 10 year olds. The programme provides a presentation given in a very sensitive way to make children aware of bullying or inappropriate behaviour. Martin has written a children’s Villes book series over the last few years. Boredville, Coldsville and Tiredsville have whimsical storylines with Herman as the hero. He donates money from the sales of his books to the NSPCC. When Martin heard about the NSPCC schools programme he came up with the idea to write Sadsville. It is a whimiscal story that shows children how to problem solve with Herman. The book has been launched in Bath and Bristol with local business sponsorship to pay for the printing of the books.

Family learning shop now open Teach, Play, Learn is a new shop where you can buy books, games and toys chosen for their clear educational value. Run by former primary school teacher Larissa Hughes and her husband Carl, who live in North Swindon, the shop at Studley Grange Craft Centre offers parents, carers and also teachers a range of brightly presented resources to stimulate a child’s curiosity to learn and develop. Larissa said: “From my teaching experience I realised there was a need for a website where teachers and parents could find interesting, innovative and proven material to extend children at different stages in their learning. “We’ve always wanted to run a shop and we’ve taken the leap at Studley Grange which attracts a large number of parents to the child-friendly craft units, as well as the butterfly centre. “We’ve called the shop Teach, Play, Learn for a more informal feel as we thought Primary Classroom Resources could put some people off. In its quest to provide the best food experience to its children, Westlea Primary School has now achieved the ultimate recognition for its healthy and climate-friendly approach to food - the Soil Association’s Food for Life Gold Award. Sarah Sumner, deputy headteacher and Healthy Schools Lead, said: “We’re so pleased our efforts to transform the food culture within the school, by serving healthy, climate-friendly school meals and integrating practical food education into the school curriculum have been recognised.’’ “Learning about the journey of food from field to plate has been

a long road since we first started working towards the bronze award in 2012. “Everybody has bought into the idea that we can offer our children better food experiences.” Nationally, only 32 schools have ever held the gold award and Westlea is currently one of only 11 to hold a valid award which lasts for three years. Since Westlea reopened its own kitchen in 2011 take up of school dinners has risen from 16 per cent to over 60 per cent of pupils, proving that good school food combined with food education is a good start to get children to eat more healthily

A trim trail has been opened at Bridlewood Primary School in Ash Brake in memory of 11 year old Daniel Climance who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in June 2015. At the funeral Daniel’s parents asked for donations to be made to Muscular Dystrophy, Swindon youth mentoring charity SMASH, and the Friends of Bridlewood School who agreed to build the trim trail. Headteacher Jo Garton said: “Daniel was the nicest lad you could ever meet, with such a lovely bright, quirky temperament. “He was mature and tall for his

age and excelled at all sports. Shortly before he died he won several competitions at the Swindon primary school’s championships.” Bridlewood children also raised money at last summer’s fete for a bench and a tree which were dedicated to Daniel last October on what would have been his twelfth birthday. The trim trail was officially unveiled by Daniel’s parents on 20 April. Mrs Garton added: “Given his keen sporting interest and remembering his great character, it’s fitting that the children will be able to remember Daniel every playtime.”

Abigail Daniels, who has been at the school for 14 years, will take the part of Peter Pan. Community News Celebrating 25 years of friendship between Nicaragua and Swindon at Festival of Literature Two events during the Swindon Festival of Literature in May will reinforce the quarter of a century that Swindon has been officially twinned with Ocotal in Nicaragua. Organised by Swindon Ocotal Link (SOL), a day of celebration at Lower Shaw Farm on Saturday 7 May, 10am to 4pm, includes dance, cooking and SOL stories, as well as lunch with a Nicaraguan theme. Ocotal residents Jorge Calderon and Maria Jose Gurrero Figuerro, will be present and organisers hope the Nicaraguan Ambassador to the UK will attend.

Radio stories inspire Nepalese children, but money needed to keep project going Swindon writer Christine Tipper has become a celebrity amongst children in Nepal who listen to her stories which are translated and broadcast on radio. Working with local charity Sakriya Sath, her adventures of Sabina and Punte Elephant have now attracted over a million listeners across the country where there is little media provision for children. She said: “The programme is designed to inspire girls and boys to be adventurous, solve problems, use their initiative, develop self-esteem and friendships. “In the aftermath of the earthquake over a year ago, organisations such as UNESCO, local schools and orphanages recognised the characters in the story could be a way to connect with traumatised children who needed hope and psychological support. “Members of the radio team visited communities to encourage children to talk about their experiences.” A recent edition of Navyaata, Nepal’s most widely read English language glossy magazine featured Christine and the impact of her stories. She said: “I met the editors

in November when I revisited Nepal and also went to schools. I was humbled and thrilled that so many children wanted to meet me and ask about Sabina, Punte and the other characters.” The project has evolved following the broadcast of a series of Christine’s stories about a magic bus with children being asked to send their own 500 word stories. However Christine says the future of the radio project is uncertain. “I’m still writing stories full of adventure and fun for broadcast despite a serious lack of money. I funded the first year but can no longer do so. “I first became involved with Nepal when, several years ago, I started to help Glory School outside Kathmandu. Swindon people were so generous last year when the students lost everything in the earthquake. By Mike Barham Standing next to one of the longest runways in Europe on a quiet, windswept April day, you would never get the sense that this United States Air Force base becomes a hive of noise and aeronautical activity for one weekend in July, but that is exactly what RAF Fairford is renowned for. During an exclusive media tour of the facility, the extremely friendly USAF Public Affairs team showed us how the base runs on a day to day basis, and dispelled a lot of the urban myths that surround RAF Fairford, including the assumption that there are still aircraft stationed at the base (there have been no aircraft assigned to RAF Fairford since 1990). Col. Clinton Ross, vice commander of the USAF 501st Combat Support Wing who oversees the base, explained: “Our role here at RAF Fairford is to enable global strike operations with on site adminstrative and munitions facilities. The 9,000ft runway has an unrestricted load bearing capability and provides the perfect staging area for bomber exercises.” Wayne Gantt, the air traffic control manager for RAF Fairford who has recently moved from Hawaii to work at the airbase, said: “On average, we only have one US State Department flight into the facility a week, to deliver all of our supplies and occasional comforts from back home. We are set up so that the tower in particular can be run by just one person – namely myself.” During a press briefing, we were told how the personnel

stationed at RAF Fairford are highly engaged with the local community, informing them of any flights coming into the airspace and when exercises will be held. This is communicated to the local parish councils so they can inform residents and keep the relationship between the base and the local area open and harmonious. This is especially important when the facility hosts the ever popular Royal International Air Tattoo, one of the most highly anticipated dates of the air show calendar. Crucially, Fairford Mayor Jennie Sanford informed us that a recent Fairford Town Council survey found over 85% of the town’s population supported RIAT and the attention it brings to their area. spoke highly of the support provided by the USAF stationed at Fairford in the build-up to the annual RIAT event. Mr Armstrong said: “For this year’s tattoo I believe we have taken all the necessary steps, with help from the personnel here at Fairford, to alleviate any concerns regarding

safety both in the air and on the ground. The Civil Aviation Authority are soon to conclude their investigation into the tragic incident at the Shoreham Air Show last year and we are very confident that RIAT will comply with the new regulations that will follow this. “The focus this year is on inspiring the next generation. Our Tech Zone for young people is back, right in the middle of the taxiway. Swindon Works! It has for 175 years For those who have not yet clockedon, this year is significant for the town. It marks 175 years since the decision was made by the Great Western Railway Company to build a locomotive maintenance depot on green fields below the nearby market town on the hill. It grew into a sprawling industrial complex employing thousands, producing railway rolling stock and everything required to fit them out, but also military equipment in two world wars, as a well as marine engines and hovercraft. This year is also the thirtieth

anniversary since the last few hundred workers clocked off for the last time in March 1986, after the long slow post war decline of the railway works, as investment was moved elsewhere. Everybody who lives here now owes a considerable debt to all those who made Swindon in the past. But it’s not just about the railways which underpin the success of the town. As the motto of the Swindon Society states: ‘History starts yesterday.’ Swindon 175 is also about the future of the town. When Ian Surtees, development manager at

Kingsdown House in the 1940s - photo courtesy of The Swindon Society Although it’s not a place you would normally expect to host a birthday party, we were all invited to one at Kingsdown Crematorium on Saturday, 23 April. It was an open day to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the crematorium, and included tours of its inner workings and a service. There was also a talk by Graham Carter, editor of Swindon Heritage magazine, about the history of the site. “I suppose you could say it is dead interesting,” said Graham. “And because not much has previously been published about the site’s past, there are a few surprises.” The crematorium buildings stand precisely on the site of the former Kingsdown House, while the grounds, including the recently opened cemetery, were once the house’s estate. With the crematorium’s anniversary imminent, Swindon Heritage were approached because staff wanted to find out more about what was there previously, and the history was sketchy. “Surprisingly little has been published about the site and the people who lived there,” said Graham. “There is an even more surprising lack of photos, especially

considering the house was only demolished just before the crematorium was built in 1966.” The team enlisted the help of Clive Carter of Wiltshire Buildings Record, who wrote a series of farm histories for the magazine, and his specialist knowledge of farming turned out to be especially useful on this project. Graham added: “In recent centuries, the story of Kingsdown House was really the story of Kingsdown Farm but there are international connections too. “We also found that what became a quiet country estate and is now a place we associate with tranquility has been a hive of activity over thousands of years. The crematorium is half a century old, but the story of its location really begins way back when Britain was still attached to the European mainland, which you can find out about in the next Swindon Heritage edition. “It just goes to show that even when it looks like there may not be much to find, there is always treasure, just waiting to be discovered.” As well as the talk, the story of Kingsdown House will also feature in the summer edition of Swindon Heritage, to be published at the end of May.

It was a series that mirrored the season — a halting start that had the Wildcats climbing a steep hill they just couldn’t quite scale. Despite a fantastic team effort in the first game at Swindon, the Cats could only muster a narrow 2-1 lead going to Guildford Flames for game two, and ultimately at a rink the Wildcats had failed to win at all season, the outcome was never to be in question. A 2-0 defeat on the night [3-2 on aggregate] saw any hopes of reaching the finals weekend at Coventry – and the season – ended in Surrey. Results in Coventry saw Guildford victorious in the playoffs, adding to their cup success, so the Wildcats can draw a little satisfaction at being the only team to have beaten the playoff winners, but by the time the result was in the books, Wildcat player-coach Aaron Nell was already making plans for 2016-17 which gets underway in August. Hugely experienced netminder Stevie Lyle has agreed a new threeyear contract, while Nell and import Jonas Höög have also confirmed they are to remain with the club

Those three, coupled with import Jan Kostal, forward Michael Stratford and utility man Lee Richardson – who will be awarded a testimonial game, means that the 2015-16 roster is already in good shape ahead of the summer as Nell looks to continue to improve on the club’s fortunes year on year. Meanwhile off the ice, supporters have started to back the club ahead of the 2016-17 season with 300 season tickets snapped up during the March Madness promotion. Swindon Croquet Club seeks new members Swindon Croquet Club is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2016 with an open weekend on 4 to 5 June. Swap the car for a bike

Swindon has recently had a fair few roadworks completed and there are more being undertaken. There are significant improvements being made to the Greenbridge roundabout now that the railway bridge has been completed and re-opened and Bruce Street is finally finished. Rodbourne Road is now closed for work on the bridge there also. These works have caused traffic issues at certain times of the day and motorists have been getting frustrated at the impact on their journey times. There is a general point to be made in that we simply cannot keep building more roads, widening existing roads and putting more and more cars on to the already busy road network. A lot of people blame all sorts of things for there being too many traffic jams, but in the end it comes down to one thing: too

many vehicles. So, what is the solution? With around 1 in 4 journeys made by car being less than 2 miles, if only half of those journeys were made by some other method, for example bikes, then motorised traffic would be reduced by over 10%. We can all see during the school holidays what impact that can have on the roads. Swindon BUG are working with the council and other parties to ensure that provision for people to use their bikes more is provided and is of a high quality. For the vast majority of journeys under 2 miles, a bike will be quicker. So, with the summer just around the corner and lots of cycle and shared paths in and around Swindon, why not dig your bike out and become a part of the solution? Urging future generations to come and support the reds Well it’s been a pretty miserable few weeks for us Town fans. A season is full of ups and downs, and this year has certainly been testament to that. We’ve had tremendous wins, both home and away, but also a couple of devastating losses. It’s hard at times like this to imagine committing yourself to another year of Swindon Town, but with season tickets on sale we urge you to get behind the team and let’s try and get a few more into the County Ground on a regular basis. This year the pricing focus is on younger supporters, and that’s something we wholeheartedly encourage. They are the future generation of Town fans, and we need to see more families coming along to games. Many supporters won’t agree with

the club’s transfer strategy, the use of loan players and such like, but the important thing for now is that we try to get some stability at Swindon Town and cheer the boys on. Swindon to Barcelona cycling challenge for Pride of Swindon winner and team Local cycling enthusiast and Pride of Swindon award winner Ricardo Defazio challenged himself and five team members to pedal their way from the County Ground to the Camp Nou football stadium, home of FC Barcelona, during April. Ricardo and his team took on the eight day bike ride to support several local charities including Prospect Hospice, Brighter Futures and Younite Outreach Project. The ‘S2B4C’ team of Ricardo Defazio, Steve Summers, Steve Duff, Louise Eggleton, Vanessa Ryman and Peter Woolley rode almost 1,000 miles in eight days, cycling with various groups and contacts along the route including the Bikebreakers who formed a 30 strong peloton to help conquer the Pyrenees mountains.

Unassisted cycling challenge from Swindon to the southernmost point of Sicily James Stewart, of St Andrews Ridge, will take on the monumental task of riding unassisted from Swindon to Portopalo di Capo Passero; the most southern point of the Italian island of Sicily in 21 days during June. The 2,300 mile trip will take James through continental Europe, over the Italian Alps and through multiple borders to raise money for the Reverse Rett charity. James said: “There will be no team mates, no peleton (group) to slipstream, no following support cars or fancy team buses. Just me, my bike, my tent and whatever luggage I can minimally survive with. I have

always wanted to do something for charity, but as a former professional cyclist myself it had to be extremely demanding. “I have a sister called Angela, who has from birth suffered from a cruel neurological disorder called Rett syndrome, that has trapped her inside her own body.” Rett syndrome is a neurological condition that leaves most people unable to speak, walk or use their hands. The Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown will once again host the Walkley overnight Walk on 11/12 June. The challenging and rewarding event will take you along some 20 plus miles of the ancient Ridgeway trail, from the Avebury stones along the trail to the Nationwide headquarters just outside Old Town. Since Walkley Midnight Walks started over twenty years ago, £180,000 has been raised for local, national and international charities. Whilst the Rotary Club provide basic guidance, care and support services you will need to be fit to cope with the hills, rough terrain and the duration of the event. You will also need to be properly dressed and equipped for the conditions on the night. The Rotary Club are officially

supporting the Brighter Futures radiotherapy appeal this year, although you are welcome to nominate your own charity to raise sponsorship for. The walk will commence at around 11pm and there is a small charge of £10 per participant. This is to cover the costs of running the event and includes the refreshments, safety arrangements and participant transport facilities. The Rotary Club is a non-profit organisation and all proceeds from the event will go to nominated charities and the Brighter Futures appeal. Inner Flame is challenging the public in Swindon and Wiltshire to take on the traditional ‘English Channel’ distance but with a personalised twist. Throughout May, Inner Flame is asking you to ‘go the distance’ in whichever sporting activity you choose – the more creative the better. The distance of 21 miles can be completed in as many or few sessions as you like between 1 and 31 May, and you can feel great knowing that you’re directly raising money for young people in your community. Inner Flame is a Wiltshire-based charity that aim to help young people develop the skills required

both for independent life and employment. Its core belief is that everyone needs to do something meaningful in their life, and that every young person has something amazing to contribute to the world. Swindon charity DASH (Discovering Autistic Spectrum Happiness) is holding a 10k fundraising event to take place through Croft Woods and around Coate Water on Sunday 8 May. The 10k run has been organised to raise awareness of autism and support the work of DASH, starting from the Nationwide car park on Pipers Way with the route taking you through Croft Woods, with its spring flowers and bluebells. The event is family and dog friendly, and you are encouraged to recruit as many friends as possible to form teams and make the event a social occasion. DASH is an independent local

charity whose mission is to improve the quality of life of adults of working age with Aspergers and other high functioning Autistic Spectrum Conditions living in Swindon. The charity, which was announced as one of two local beneficiaries of the Swindon Cares group for this financial year along with Hop, Skip and Jump, run weekday drop in sessions from the Swindon Advice and Support Centre (SAASC) on Sanford Street, with Saturday sessions by appointment as well. Honda reckon that 38mpg – aided by Stop/Start - is possible but 28mpg is more likely. The best hot hatch on the market today.

Justin Tomlinson, MP for North Swindon, officially opened the Stanton Park Farmhouse Tea-Room on behalf of Every Cloud Arts & Crafts on 31 March. It will be open every weekend from 10.30am to 4.30pm through until September. The tea-rooms are run by volunteers to raise funds for the work of the Every Cloud charity that helps local artists and craftspeople who have uncovered their creativity through adversity, to

fulfill their potential, personally and professionally. There will also be events taking place at the Farmhouse: Saturday 7 May, 10.30am to 1pm: craft workshop. Blunsdon opens gardens to public Blunsdon village will be opening selected gardens to the public on the weekend of 9 and 10 July. Free parking will be available at Blunsdon House Hotel and breakfasts will be sold at the village hall from 10am. There will be floral displays celebrating the life of the Queen as she turns 90, at St Leonards Church. Workshops at the village hall will allow you to make your own miniature garden from recycled materials, and plant sales and a tombola will be amongst the other attractions. The scarecrows and gardens

will be open from12 noon til 5pm by ticket admission only. The tickets are available for sale from the village hall at £5 per adult including a minibus service for the less active. I’ll get my Coate - an April story that fooled them all On April 1, we ran a story at swindonlink.com about a proposal to create a surf centre at Coate Water. The story read: Coate Water Country Park could soon host the country’s first artificial surf centre says an outline study published on 1 April. Swindon already offers possibly the widest range of recreational activities to be found in one town in the South, including ice skating, two large trampolining parks, swimming pools, indoor climbing walls and an indoor skate and scooter park. The draft study exclusively revealed to Swindon Link is thought to have been produced by a company owned by billionaire hotel and golf course developer Donald Trump, currently preoccupied with gaining the Republican nomination to run for US President. The story continued letting people know why Coate Water was the perfect location for the surf centre and how it would boost the local economy. The story was given a warm reception by the people of Swindon with most readers realising that it was an April Fool’s

It’s all very well doing all this leisure stuff to please a few, but what about the closed children’s centre and libraries - to say nothing about the town centre with no shops but closed ones.

Since moving to Swindon five years ago, Lydiard Park has become the one place we are sure to take friends, overseas visitors and family for a wonderful day out. I think it is probably the best place in the immediate area that has provenance, apart from the wonderful Steam railway museum. We must keep it accessible to Swindonians and visitors alike. Lydiard Park is our answer to the fact that Swindon has no cathedral... but we have Lydiard Park and easy access to the most fabulous countryside in the Cotswolds. As a South African, we are awed!
