The new manager of one of the two Neighbourhood Police Teams covering West Swindon will be known to many residents of the area, having been born and brought up in Freshbrook. It is again a difficult time financially for the council, the challenge is to seek support from all interested parties to ensure the park and house continue as a favourite place in the town.” Leader of the council David Renard told the meeting there would be no circumstances where Lydiard Park would be offered to the private sector. He said: “The park is subsidised to a significant extent. In a time when the public purse is stretched it is the responsible thing to look at ways to reduce this subsidy. “I can categorically say we are not looking to put the park in private hands and I don’t think there is any member in the chamber who would support that decision.” Cllr Garry Perkins, cabinet mem-

Localism Act application to slow down any Lydiard sale The Lydiard Fields Action Group has submitted an application to Swindon Council to register Lydiard Park and Greendown Plantation as an Asset of Community Value under the Localism Act. This would mean - should the council be minded to put the house, park, or plantation up for sale the community would have six months to prepare a bid to buy them. The Grange Park based action group was formed in early 2010 when a developer proposed 175 houses off Hook Street, on the last field next to the park. Permission was eventually granted for 73 houses out of sight of the park.

The group has kept going to seek protection for Lydiard Park. Secretary Lorraine Bramwell, said: “We are all very lucky to have such a place as Lydiard, with its history stretching back over hundreds of years, its wildlife and its countryside ambience. “But it cannot be taken for granted, and the recent agreement for outline planning permission on the last remaining field between Grange Park and Lydiard, which at the moment still links the Plantation to the Park, demonstrates its vulnerability. “Registering an asset of community value does not actually prevent a sale, but it expresses in a concrete way the appreciation felt by many residents

and visitors alike for these areas.” South Swindon MP Robert Buckland has been advising the group on how to apply for asset protection. He said: “I am really pleased that the Lydiard Fields Action Group has made this application. “I think that it is a very useful way to emphasise the community’s strong support for vital local public amenities like Lydiard Park. Registering the park and plantation will serve as a ‘marker in the sand’ should there be any attempt in the future to sell the freehold of our beloved park and house.” A decision by Swindon Council on the application is awaited.

The free course for up to seven parents at a time introduces them to healthy raw ingredients and new ways to prepare dishes. Working together gives parents confidence to have a go; it’s also a chance to share how to encourage children to try food they might not have seen before. Sainsbury’s is sponsoring three courses lasting six to eight sessions, providing £50 towards ingredients for each one. August party to mark group’s 25 years Nutkinz parent and toddler group is planning a pirates and princesses party on Saturday 2 August, and wants to hear from children and parents who have attended the group over the years.

Established by Alison Kerr, Jill Wells and Julia Hinns, the group met for many years in Upper Shaw Community Centre before moving to the new Shaw Ridge Primary School in 2009 when the centre was closed and let to Hop, Skip & Jump respite care. Nutkinz currently has 80 members on its books and has always provided a place for both parents and childminders to meet up. It meets on Wednesdays and Fridays, 9.30am to 11.30am, and extends for those who want to stay for lunch together. Dawn Higham, a member for 14 years and chair for seven, said the group used to be much larger. “At one time we had four sessions a week but the number of families with toddlers has reduced in West Swindon.

“There are several reasons for the group’s success. Members like the friendly atmosphere where everybody looks out for everybody’s children. I think new mums like to meet the childminders in the group as they tend to be older and can chat about caring for a toddler. We have some dads and grandparents who come along too. “We also open throughout the holidays so that older siblings can come along to take part in activities and go on outings.” Group secretary Zoe John said: “Hundreds of families have been to Nutkinz over the years and we’d like to meet as many as possible at our party.” Find out more and register for the party at westswindonshawtoddler. co.uk

Young dancers ready for world cup competition

Now in its eleventh year the Dance World Cup is like the Olympics of dance, bringing together over 18,000 children and young people aged between 4 and 25, from private, nonstate run dance schools and academies across nearly 40 countries. Describing the event academy principal Sarah Watson said: “The standard is high and the organisers encourage group dances so as many children and young people as possible can participate.” The competition, which many international dance schools deem to be the best children’s and youth dance competition in the world, will be streamed live over the internet. Sarah added: “Ours are the only dancers within the Swindon area

to have been chosen to take part. It’s a great honour and an amazing achievement that reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment to dance by the children and staff.” The trip will cost £550 per pupil. As well as organising their own fundraising events the academy is appealing for any company that might be interested in sponsoring the troupe to get in touch. Little Big Fest gets set for launch The Little Big Festival is back, and this year’s events will be officially launched in Old Town on Sunday 27 April and organisers are inviting more people to get involved in events that will run until September. After last year’s success, Town Gardens will again host a string of events for all the family, with the launch event setting the theme for the rest of the festival. Magazine to focus on Lydiard House The summer edition of Swindon Heritage will turn the spotlight on Lydiard House when published at the end of May. The magazine, which continues to go from strength to strength and has now reached six editions, features Lydiard House heiress Frances Winchcombe on the cover and tells her tragic story. It also delves into the history of the house that was bought for the people of Swindon in 1943. Chief writer Frances Bevan, who is

an expert on the history of the Lydiard estate, said: “There has been a lot of controversy about the future of the park recently, and we felt the plight of the house, which is Grade I Listed, was being lost in political squabbling. “Many people in Swindon don’t appreciate what a jewel the house, the park and St Mary’s Church is. “The story behind the purchase of it is also sometimes mis-understood, so we are putting the record straight. “It was an extraordinary act of vision by one man in particular, Francis Akers,a former mayor and alderman, that saved it. Book sheds light on pre-apartheid South Africa Cape Town-born author Lindsay Tonkin, who now lives in Gorse Hill, has published a fascinating biography of his father EW Tonkin, which documents his experiences as a policeman and journalist in pre-apartheid South Africa from 1932 to his premature death in 1950. A Swindon born man has published his first book, in which the story and characters are based on his early life in Zimbabwe. Shumbachena White Lion is by Nicholas Stanton, who now lives in Grange Park. He went to Zimbabwe as a 10 year old and returned in 2000 with his wife and daughter. Focused on the life and experiences of a Save the Rhino ranger in the southern African bush, the adventure encounters wild animals, poachers and trips into other worlds populated by dwarves. Nicholas said: “The title of the book is taken from the nickname bestowed on me by my wife Patricia. “I have based quite a few of the characters on my family and friends. The professor’s wife is Jeanne Stanton, my mother, who sadly passed away, a year after returning to Swindon. “Africa is still very much within me. The experiences of my early days remain vivid, and I wanted to channel them.”

It’s nearly time to discover what the 21st Swindon Festival of Literature has on offer It’s a common question: who are the ‘big names’ at this year’s Swindon Festival of Literature, 5 to 17 May? writes Louisa Davison They could be seen as former BBC chief news and war correspondent Kate Adie - speaking in association with The Link magazine - or exprisons’ minister and Strictly contestant Ann Widdecombe, or children’s favourite author, Jacqueline Wilson, above, creator of Tracy Beaker. But there are others whose writing makes good reading. And reading leads to talking, then listening, then thinking and reflecting. And to take ourselves to the thinking and reflecting stage we choose challenging

writers who have something relevant to say. This year, they include animal enthusiasts, Patrick Barkham, Laurens de Groot and Philip Lymbery. Patrick wrote Badgerlands and has things to say about culling. Eggs from the home front provided comfort for the injured It wasn’t only the armed forces that were mobilised when the First World War began on 4 August 1914, writes Frances Bevan, who describes the beginning of a huge movement in the nation’s hour of need. By October the Committee for the Comforts for the Troops of the Wiltshire Regiment was established at Swindon Town Hall, one of hundreds of voluntary groups to spring into action across the land. By the end of the year volunteers from the Swindon district were busy collecting eggs to send to military hospitals in both England and France. Beaten egg white was sometimes the only food men with facial injuries could swallow. The Swindon branch of this national campaign was headed by Mrs AM Sellers at headquarters in Stratton St Margaret. A collector was appointed in each village, with a committee headed by Edith Arkell, wife of Kingsdown brewer Thomas Arkell. In January 1915 the first list of donations was published, recording that 101 eggs and £1.5s.6d (£1.27p) had been collected. By the end of the year, nearly 5,000 eggs had been despatched, and more than £122 raised. Some eggs were kept back for use by hospitals at Milton Road Baths and Stratton, but the bulk were sent to central London for distribution.

In his book, Swindon’s War Record, WD Bavin tells some amazing tales of coincidence, such as the Swindon soldier ser ving in France who received an egg donated by his young niece, Kathleen Sawyer, and a letter

written by T Tucker of Wootton Bassett, whose first hospital meal after being shot through the head was an egg from Swindon. “I wish you could see the joy on the poor fellows’ faces when they get the eggs,”he wrote.

By 1918, Swindon and district volunteers had collected 161,651 eggs – the eleventh highest total out of 2,000 depots nationwide. New signs recognise Commonwealth War Graves at Swindon cemeteries

Frances Bevan writes about the timely reminders of the ultimate sacrifice of local men which are appearing around the country as commemorations of the centenary of the Great War get underway. As part of a project to place 3,000 (CWGC) has erected new signage at signs across the country, the Com- cemeteries at Radnor Street in Old monwealth War Graves Commission Town, and Whitworth Road. One will later be put up at Christ Church in Old Town The idea behind the scheme is to inform people of the 300,000 war graves in cemeteries and churchyards across the UK. The director of the commission’s UK Area, Barry Murphy, said: “We are keen to raise awareness of these burials and to remind people that they do not necessarily need to go to France or Belgium to visit war graves. “Since nearly every town and village has war graves within its own local cemetery or churchyard, they can be found almost on your own doorstep.” The 11½ acre cemetery at Radnor Street contains 104 war graves maintained by the commission, of which

89 are casualties from the Great War. Some of Radnor Street’s war heroes have only been recognised after research in recent years. The latest is Herbert Marfleet, a corporal in the Royal Army Service Corps, who died after returning to Swindon in 1919, from malaria contracted in Salonika. The War Graves Commission is producing a headstone to mark his grave.

XTC fan from afar Videographer and photographer Maria Angelica Sepulveda Medina from Chile must be one of the biggest fans of legendary Swindon band XTC in South America. She listened to The Beatles, Iron Maiden and many others since a young age but her imagination lit up in 1985 when a friend played This World Over by XTC. “I was absolutely stunned with the melody and the voice of Andy Partridge,” she mailed Swindon Link. “His music has been with me ever since; XTC are prodigious geniuses from Swindon. Almost no one knows of them in my country.” To raise awareness Maria has made a video of XTC’s song Melt The Guns featuring her three children. Matt aims to run in Rome on New Year’s Eve In 2014, Matt Cordas from Lydiard Millicent can be seen pounding the streets near his home or his workplace in Cirencester in order to achieve a daily target of running a minimum of 5.64km in aid of the St. James’s Place Foundation - in total 2,000 kilometres or more. As women and sometimes men usually arrive at the sanctuary with nothing, the centre provides toiletries for use after examination. Manager Jools James-Kempshall said: “We make up packs of new items for the people who come to us, to try and offer a tiny bit of normality in a traumatic situation. Bear rescue target for Swindon group

West primary hosts teachers from across Europe As part of the UK component of Commenius exchange project, eighteen teachers and 16 children from schools in Germany, Turkey, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Romania visited Tregoze Primary School in March.

The Swindon branch of Animals Asia has announced its commitment to raising £12,000 in 18 months, towards a worldwide appeal to help set up a third sanctuary for rescued moonbears in China and Vietnam. Group coordinator Sarah Chilvers said: “Over the last three years we have raised £15,000 but this new target is a major challenge. Teacher Patrizia Mel from Italy said: “Working in classrooms is very interesting because teaching methods

are so different.” Ten year old Luise Bethke from Sweden stayed with Grace Hilton and her family for the week of the visit. She said: “I like the school which is colourful; everywhere you look there is something interesting. I did not think I would like the food in England, but it’s nice.” Grace said she’s looking forward to meeting Luise and the other children who visited Swindon, in June when there will be a large gathering in Germany to celebrate the successful conclusion of the project.

He said: “I’ve heard a great deal about the squadron and seen air cadets on duty and assisting at events around the town like Remembrance Day and Armed Forces Day, but I wanted to come along and see what they do. “I’m so impressed by how much cadets can get involved with. The Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme and BTEC courses are popular. There’s a wide range of hobbies and sports, in addition to the more mainstream RAF related activities

like visiting stations, marching and learning to shoot. “The cadets are an important youth movement largely run by volunteers, some of whom have served in the forces. Ron’s work confirms that nature definitely knows best. He said: “At the moment, bee-keepers are advised to administer damaging chemicals into their hives to eradicate mites and viruses, which are such a threat to the global population of honeybees. “But since stopping the use of pesticides on my own hives in 1995 I began to observe honeybees grooming their honeycombs to clean out mites. I then demonstrated that this behaviour is due to a genetic capability in the bees, and it’s this that I want to spread to make sure that bee colonies can be self-sustaining.” It took 19 painstaking years of observation, recording and interpreting the data from his hives before Ron was confident that the evidence was pointing to honeybee populations finding their own ways to make their habitats hygienic and mite-free. “I noticed that adult bees were ejecting baby bees that had been affected by the destructive verroa

mite. I began to find the antennae of baby bees gathering at the base of the hives, along with the dented bodies of the mites. The evidence suggests that the bees have bitten into the mites and discarded them, along with the remains of the babies.” In 2010 Ron’s discoveries made international news, and he is still on a mission to spread the word that pesticides are not required as long as hygienic bee stocks and specially bred queens are used to establish hives. Addressing the Central Association of Bee-keepers in London in April, Ron explained his approach to apiarists. He said: “We need to stop using pesticides that leach into everything and stop the practice of culling drones, which is reducing the reproductive capacity of the bees in the wild.” Ron runs bee-keeping courses at Stanton Country Park. The plaque was presented by Swindon Council leader David Renard and cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Care Brian Mattock. MS Challenge 2014: Saturday 28th June The annual fundraising MS challenge takes place in the Brecon Beacons where teams of 10 to 12 people carry a wheelchair passenger with MS around a demanding and exhilarating course set out by the Navy. The carrying team will face tough terrain including steep inclines and rugged ground. The wheelchair is attached to a framework on a white knuckle journey and the passenger is lifted, passed, and manoeuvred over the course - enjoying incredible views on the way. Commenting on the aim of the programme, project coordinator Imogen Kershaw said: “It’s a powerful way to show how difficult it is to look after a child and it’s meant as a preventative measure against teenage pregnancy. “The young people have to do all the things they would normally have to do with a real baby – feed it, change its nappy, burp it and rock it to help

it sleep. After each activity they have to apply a special magnet to record that they have completed the task.” Last year five robot babies were taken home for the weekend, and while three survived, two ‘died’. Imogen said: “The young people were shocked by the ‘deaths’. They said they had gained a lot of experience of what it’s like to care for a baby.”

Swindon Travel Choices Swindon Travel Choices aims to make it easier for those living or working in Swindon to get around without clogging up the road network. We believe that by giving people proper travel choices, many everyday journeys can be made by bus, bike and foot rather than by car. A new guide to cycle clubs, groups and activities is set to kick start Swindon’s cycle revolution this month. The 20 page guide is split into two sections: a ‘Get back on your bike’ section, aimed at clubs, rides and activities for new, novice and occasional cyclists, and a ‘become a better cyclist’ section for those looking for more specialist or challenging clubs and activities. Copies of the brochure are available from Swindon’s libraries and cycle shops, also a PDF copy can be downloaded from www.swindontravelchoices.org.uk. Alongside the cycle brochure is a new guide for ‘Get Moving Month.’ This 16 page guide lists all the walking and cycling events and activities taking place in the Swindon area in May.
