Quattrocyclists get ready for Big Battlefield Bike Ride with a curry A team from Swindon are planning to pedal a four wheeled pedal car from Paris at the end of May and are looking for supporters to join them at Peatmoor’s Bombay Lounge restaurant to raise money for Help for Heroes. Did you notice? Since last month a whole lot of new health service organisations have been working away, planning, commissioning or buying NHS care. Most of the changes aren’t going to affect us directly – at least not immediately – though an NHS, with a squeezed budget catering for more people, will need to do things differently and, often, closer to where we live. The same applies at Swindon Borough Council where less money means changes to the way social services are provided – and who gets them. One of the new organisations is Healthwatch Swindon. It’s new and, although it receives its funds from the council (and will account for their use), it really is independent. It is the consumer champion for health and social care services, for people of all ages; and it has replaced this magazine’s namesake, the Local Involvement Network or LINk. Sound familiar? It’s a bit like the Community Health Councils which were abolished in 2003, (but only a bit). Healthwatch is both local and national. A network of local Health-
watch organisations in each social services authority area like Swindon will work together with local people and with Healthwatch England to get the best out of health and care services. All health and care providers are expected to listen to the people they serve. And so are the people with the money - the planners and commissioners of the services we need. Every voice counts and Healthwatch is here to make sure that happens; to be influential and authoritative and to include people from all communities – particularly where people feel excluded. Doubtful? Don’t be – but we will depend on hearing what you think; and then joining with us to make sure Healthwatch Swindon works effectively. We’d also be really pleased to come and talk. Tadpole Farm is to have a second primary school after Swindon Council’s cabinet agreed that another North Swindon school should be built there. As part of their planning permission Crest Homes were required to have built a school by the time 564 of the 1,650 houses for the site north of Oakhurst have been built - several years away. But to cope with the demand for school places across North Swindon, a further 90 extra reception places are needed by September 2014. Five sites had been under consideration and Tadpole Farm was chosen as the least worst to build a two form entry school. The other 30 places will be created at Orchid Vale Primary School. Crest has agreed to open up Tadpole Farm for development sooner than expected and provide land for another primary school, but Swindon Council will have to pay £3 million to build a safe access road across what will become a giant construction site - in addition to the cost of building the school. The money will be returned to the council after an agreed number of houses have been sold. A planning application for the school and the road will be submitted soon.

Spring has sprung at Lower Shaw Farm Lou the lamb has produced two babies of her own, four years after she was orphaned when dogs savaged her own mother. Brought to the farm as a tiny bundle of shiverering wool Lou, a black Welsh ewe crossed with a Jacobs, was kept warm in front of a Rayburn cooker and bottle fed by volunteers. Now a full grown ewe, she produced two sturdy male lambs in the early hours of Tuesday 16 April, without any human intervention. Lower Shaw Farm resident Matt Holland was lyrical in his delight, writing: 'Never was the sky so blue and we have news for you. 'Last night, at Lower Shaw Farm, two lambs
were born and their lovely mother, black Lou, licked them clean. Soon, the two new-born males were up on their unsteady feet, nuzzling their mother’s flank in search of a milk-rich teat.’ By the time you read this the lambs will be gambolling about enjoying spring warmth. UTC Swindon comes closer A University Technical College in Swindon has taken a significant step forward following the appointment of building contractor: BAM Construction. UTC Swindon draws on the town’s heritage and is to be located in part of the Swindon’s former railway works, close to the railway village and the Great Western Park. Some of the buildings housed the first GWR school until 1881 and later became the works fire station and chemist’s labs. During a typical 9am to 5pm day at UTC Swindon, which is due to open in September 2014, students will combine practice and theory to integrate academic requirements with key technical and practical elements. Engineering employers who will provide project support and work experience for students will heavily influence the college ethos and curriculum. Building work is due to start in the autumn and comprehensive designs will now be developed, although the proposed site is subject to lease negotiations, planning permission and Government approval. Redhouse Village Centre ‘at the heart of a community.‘ The reality: 33 more houses
Three public squares, two pubs, two restaurants and cafes, a medical centre, nursery, office units and a church surrounded by a green area, Redhouse Village Centre was going to be a ‘vibrant and distinctive heart’ of Priory Vale, and it was going to be ready in 2007. Sadly what was described in the original glossy brochure promoting Priory Vale in 2003 does not match the reality. What has transpired is Hairworks Salon, a Tesco convenience store, chip shop, dentist surgery and an estate agent. A unit let to a second estate agent remains empty, and another shop where a pharmacy failed is now a community cafe charity shop run by Uplands School educational trust. At a public meeting called by North
Swindon councillors in March 2007, Chris Cain, project manager for land owner Crest Nicholson had to respond to residents’ complaints about the lack of progress on delivering the village-style shops and outdoor cafes - as visualised in the marketing material. He told people that Crest was following the design guide agreed with Swindon Council planners in 2002. “Judgement should be made when the village centre is complete in three years,” he said at the time.

However a community centre, not in the original plan, is to be built and a site has been retained for a pub. North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, who called the 2007 meeting when he was a councillor for North Swindon, said: “It’s extremely disappointing that Crest has failed to deliver the facilities that they bragged
about in their expensive glossy brochures ten years ago. I’m glad that the community centre is going ahead, there is a great need and keen interest in using it, and I will continue to bring together Crest and Arkells Brewery to agree a realistic price for the land. “House builders make all manner of claims for future development and people buy homes at a premium as a result, but they can’t be prosecuted under the Trade Description’s Act if they don’t deliver the promises. Toothill seniors go all 50 Shades Older folk living in Toothill have adopted a name for their new social club with a contemporary reference. The first meeting of The 50 Shades Club on Monday 15 April at Toothill Community Centre brought together 25 people to socialise, play cards, bingo and board games. Jean Carey, 98, founder of the Toothill Good Companions which folded in January after 35 years, said: “It’s really good to have a new club to go to. Older people need social activities to get themselves out of the house. Let’s hope this club lasts as long as the last one.”
Club helper Jackie Parry said that several younger volunteers would be involved in organising activities at the community centre. “It was a very good first meeting, there was a lot of enthusiasm for 50 Shades, which relates to the range of ages and hair colour. I’d encourage all older people from Toothill to join in.” The club’s start up costs are being supported by the Toothill Million Big Local lottery project. Following an Ofsted visit in January which identified areas for further improvement, Nova Hreod’s headteacher Julie Tridgell and her leadership team are determined to build on their successes of recent years and continue the improvements that have already been made. The quality of teaching was praised in the report, which recognised that students were making rapid progress. Wiltshire-based artist Timothy Cumming and photographer Nigel Hudson will be unveiling months of work around Swindon in a brand new exhibition in May - called Working Beautifully - with the aim of encouraging viewers to be enchanted by business and industry in the town through inspiring images of people at work. Among the many established and international authors at this year’s Swindon Festival of Literature, there will be one newly-published from Old Town. On Friday 10 May, 7.30pm, at The Platform in Faringdon Road, writer Hilda Sheehan will be celebrating publication of her own book of poetry, The Night My Sister Went to Hollywood. Swindon’s past & present at north and west libraries An exhibition featuring work by young people, alongside images from Swindon photographer Albert Beaney taken over 50 years ago, will be on show at: North Swindon Library until 9 May; West Swindon Library from 10 May to 20 June. Inspired by the collection of 40,000 photographs taken in and around the town from the 1940s to the 1970s, the young people took pictures of Swindon today and interviewed those who appear as young people themselves in Beaney’s work.

One is single mum of two Lisa Harvey of Ferndale who found a use for her bike in the shed, and discovered a new hobby, having read an article in the October 2012 Link, shortly after Sarah Selwood formed Birds on Bikes. Explaining why the group appealed to her Lisa said: “It’s good cycling with women because they give you lots of tips and are really encouraging. They even wait for me on the trails which is really good because I’m an absolute beginner.” So far Lisa has been on two cycling trips with the group, one to Swinley Forest near Reading and the other to
the Forest of Dean. Group founder Sarah Selwood said: “Women have particular requirements and I wanted to create a place to share information and invitations to get out and enjoy mountain biking together. “The group has become more and more successful and brought together women from all along the M4. Last year over a thousand passengers enjoyed a voyage on Dragonfly, but not people in wheelchairs. Funding from the Bruce Wake Charitable Trust, the Herbert & Peter Blagrave Charitable Trust, the Medlock Charitable Trust, and assistance from The Community Foundation of Wiltshire & Swindon, covered the cost of purchasing a wheelchair lift. But the installation could have doubled the cost of the project. Help was at hand through a group of apprentices at Mini Plant Swindon who took on the challenge as one of their training projects. Kath Hatton, acting chair of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, said: “We are most grateful to Mini Plant Swindon for their generous support
in fitting the wheelchair lift. The apprentices have done a brilliant job which allows us to welcome wheelchair users onto Dragonfly. This is something we have wanted to do ever since we started trips at Kingshill two years ago.” Apprentice Declan Kearns said: “The project gave us experience of something completely different, from working out how to fit the lift to the boat to the actual installation.” At the same time canal trust volunteers were able to carry out essential maintenance work on Dragonfly whilst she was out of the water in the workshop. Link makes it to the top of Kilimanjaro with a Mad March Hare Thanks to Margaret Nicholson, chair of the Mad March Hare organising committee, for packing the February edition on a trip to Tanzania to climb 5,895 metres up Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. The five day trek took Margaret and 8 friends through farmland and pine plantations onto a plateau of moorland and desolate landscapes, always with amazing views of the mountain. Margaret said things got tougher the closer they got. “As we reached higher levels the inevitable altitude sickness began to kick in. There were times of real discomfort and we had no choice but to take it really slowly. With the encouragement of our guides and each other we kept a positive mental attitude. On the last morning we were up very early in the darkness and after eight hours climbing the summit loomed into view.” Eunice Salmon and Jacqueline Kirwan from Swindon achieved Gilman’s Point on the edge of the Kilimanjaro crater and Margaret went another 300 metres to Uhuru summit. Eunice was raising money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Jacqueline was fundraising for the Great Western Hospital breast care unit. TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT
Work on the long awaited extension to the Coate Water Miniature Railway has begun. This will add a significant distance to the line and involves creating new cuttings and embankments, and a curved tunnel. The railway will operate as normal during the work and is open on the first, second and fourth Saturday of the month, and every Sunday, from 11.30am to 5pm, weather permitting. The railway is operated by the North Wilts Model Engineering Society. The money raised from fares is used to run, maintain and improve the railway. Church expands to second venue North Swindon Baptist Church is reaching out to Redhouse, Oakhurst, Taw Hill and Priory Vale with the start of dual Sunday morning services at their traditional venue of Abbey Meads Community School at 10.30am and also at Isambard School at 10am. Andy Marshall explained: “Our congregation at Abbey Meads has been rapidly growing over recent years, with 120 to 130 regular attendees, many of whom travel across from the newer parts of North Swindon. Rather than merely start multiple Sunday services at Abbey Meads, we felt we’d be better able to serve residents north and west of Abbey Meads if we provided additional regular services within those communities. “Having started on Easter Sunday we are seeing 50 to 60 people worshipping at Isambard, with more than 80 at Abbey Meads. We expect both congregations to keep increasing in number, as a result of continued new housing development adding to the local population, and also as people respond to the real sense of hope through belief in Jesus’ life changing message that we seek to faithfully communicate. “We continue to provide many ministries from parent and toddler groups through to youth clubs primarily from Abbey Meads and watch this space for developing ministries in the area north of Thamesdown Drive.” See the advert below.
