Olympic torch relay route help wanted For the vast majority the Olympics in London will be a TV spectacular but on 23 May the torch comes to Swindon as part of its tour around the country. Carrying the Olympic flame against online bullying Swindon’s former youth MP Carney Bonner has been chosen to carry the Olympic flame because of his voluntary work to highlight and combat cyber bullying.

 Former Greendown pupil and North Swindon resident Carney will be running a mile through Chiseldon. He is currently studying at Cirencester College and in February launched the Carney Charles Foundation to continue campaigning against cyber bullying. Giving the torch the Spirit of Swindon In late 2001 Norman Butler from Westlea completed an 82 day row across the Atlantic in a boat he called the Spirit of Swindon, having been inspired by Steve Redgrave winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Since then he has become a stalwart volunteer with the SMASH youth mentoring project, and has raised over £20,000 for good causes. Ben bombs down the Olympic track to collect gold

Ben Morris from Middleleaze, whose movement is restricted to controlling his powered wheelchair with his left thumb, became the centre of attention at the London Olympic stadium on 1 April when he made a trip down the 100 metre track at 4mph in front of cheering crowds.

Hope for Diamond Jubilee Woodland grant success

A proposal to plant thousands of trees on 40 acres of land between North and West Swindon to celebrate the Queen’s sixty years on the throne could receive approval later in the year if a grant application is successful. The site identified is close to Nova Hreod School and Moredon Par 3 golf course, north of Shaw Forest Park. Cllr Nick Martin, cabinet member for open spaces, has been developing the project with council officers. He said: “Subject to what might lie beneath the surface of the fields, the prospect of creating a large new woodland to mark the Queen’s jubilee is very exciting.

“Swindon has a history of finding all sorts of industrial stuff being buried in the past, but as we’ve shown at Shaw Forest trees can cope with inhospitable conditions.” Cllr Martin has been involved with the green spaces around Shaw since 1995 when a Thamesdown Borough Council resolution secured the purchase of Shaw tip from Wiltshire County Council. He said: “This kicked off the creation of the

As part of the £6 million Swindon Travel Choices project to improve opportunities for walking and cycling to work in Swindon town centre, a public exhibition focusing on two schemes will take place at Swindon Central Library, Regent Circus on Friday 25 May, 2pm to 7pm, and Saturday 26 May, 10am to 2pm. This will display options for upgrading the ‘Western Flyer’ cycle route from West Swindon to the town centre, and also a scheme concentrating on improving pedestrian and cyclist access in the town. There will also be a chance to see the plans and talk to council officers at West Swindon Library in mid-June; date and time to be confirmed in the June Link.

Getting the signs right

A Swindon Council project to greatly improve pedestrian and cycle direction signs around West Swindon is nearing an end, though not without a few hiccups. New fingerposts have been erected in key places but the less expensive footpath stick-on signs that appeared in April have been removed because of sub-standard work and will be reinstalled at the contractor’s expense. All the signs displaying Greendown Community School will be amended to show Lydiard Park Academy.

Please stop inviting the criminals to steal from your home!

The police in West Swindon are making a desperate plea to residents to ensure their houses, sheds and cars are locked because there are criminals prowling the streets looking for the chance to take their belongings. Despite warnings and media coverage to keep things secure some people seem intent on giving the opportunists carte blanche to take what they want because they’re not locking up. In the early hours of 8 April three burglaries occurred in Shaw and Grange Park. Entry was gained through unlocked doors and property taken included an iPod, iPhone, cash and other small items. This is in addition to a spate of burglaries over four nights in February when there were 22 burglaries in Sparcells and Shaw - all from insecure properties. Neighourhood Police Team manager PC Tom Turner said ten people had been arrested for burglary since the end of February. “We’re doing everything we can to combat the problem by carrying out extra night patrols, visiting neighbourhoods to look for unlocked cars and doors, and distributing leaflets to insecure households, as well

The River Ray bridge next to Blunsdon Station to be rebuilt

The river bridge and the railway bridge adjacent to Swindon & Cricklade Railway Society’s base on Tadpole Lane will be closed for essential repairs and reconstruction from 18 May for 32 weeks. However Swindon Borough Council and the railway trust are keen to emphasise that the railway will remain open throughout the period of the works. The first phase of works will focus on the Wiltshire Council managed bridge over the River Ray and is scheduled to take 20 weeks. The bridge will be completely reconstructed, resulting in a wider thoroughfare with a new footway. During this phase access to the railway will be from the Purton side only (from the B4553) and over the railway bridge. However parking will be permitted on Tapole Lane and visitors will be able to walk to the station over a temporary footbridge. In the second phase, from midSeptember, the contractors will stabilise the Swindon Council owned Grade II listed railway bridge and embankment. The traffic light system will be upgraded to improve access to the railway car park. During this time the approach from the B4553 will be closed and the railway will be approached

along Tadpole Lane from North Swindon. Swindon Council engineer Liz Baldwin said: “We are very mindful of how these essential works affect the railway centre’s activities and want to reduce the disruption as much as possible. “We are working closely with the railway society and the contractors Mouchel to ensure that there will be full access from both sides of the bridge for the railway’s key visitor weekends over the summer. “The railway operators have been very accommodating and have given good advice in the planning of this maintenance work.”

Events cancelled, but extended line should open in September Because of the extensive roadworks the annual Vintage, Veterans and Wartime weekends will not take place this summer. However volunteers are working hard to lay new railway track to extend the line into Moulden Hill Park so that, from September, visitors will be able to travel by train from Taw Valley halt in the south, to Blunsdon station and northwards to just outside Cricklade. Resident wants more supporters to back him at Ridgeway Farm enquiry 700 homes at Ridgeway Farm will be as big as Shaw, Ramleaze and Peatmoor combined

Kevin Fisher from Shaw is calling for email support from as many people as possible before he commits to speaking against the proposal to build 700 houses at Ridgeway Farm at a planning enquiry in Chippenham starting on 9 May. Kevin said: “I’m ready to speak against further expansion but I really need hundreds of supportive e-mails from people living in all parts of Swindon, not just the West. “The developer’s barrister is sure to ask who I speak for and I want to be able to clearly state from the outset that I have the broad support of a mass of people.” He believes the planning enquiry will be a test case for the Coalition Government’s view that local communities should have a say in planning decisions. “Approval of Ridgeway Farm will be undemocratic. MPs and councillors in both Swindon and Wiltshire have publicly voiced their opposition to the development and over 1,000 residents have objected in writing. “Ridgeway Farm is huge. It represents a new estate twice the size of both Sparcells and Nine Elms, bigger than Middleleaze, and similar in size to Peatmoor, Shaw and Ramleaze combined. “If you add together all the houses in these areas, Ridgeway Farm represents a 20 per cent increase with no improvements in road infrastructure and no additional amenities such as shops and parking. Jubilee timepieces celebrate town’s railway connections

The history of time itself is being celebrated in Swindon with the unveiling of a limited edition commemorative watch to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee. In a joint venue Steam – Museum of the Great Western Railway, and Swindon Jewellers, Deacon & Son, have produced three versions of the pocket watch styled on those used on the Great Western Railway. Keeping accurate time was important to the GWR – to keep trains running on time for customers and to make sure employees got to work on time. The company relied on a wide variety of time-keeping pieces, from guards’ pocket watches and mantel clocks, to giant clocks on stations and the famous steam-powered hooter at Swindon Works. Ian Surtees, Steam’s commercial manager said: “Deacon & Son supplied timepieces to the GWR back in the 1850s and the museum is very proud to present this exquisite pocket watch to collectors and GWR enthusiasts to mark this special year.” Descendent of the Old Town jewellers Richard Deacon added: “It’s been a great pleasure to work on this joint project to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee. Lunch club continues after cook’s departure

Members of Toothill Lunch Club said farewell to Sue Hull, their long standing cook and organiser, in early April and have moved their lunch day from Friday to Wednesday.

When Sue announced she would be leaving last Autumn to look after her disabled husband there were fears that the club would have to close. However Toothill Community Cafe came to the rescue to provide lunch for the 58 members, in parallel with the Wednesday cafe. Sue, who restarted the lunch club in early 2003, was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a cash gift raised by lunch club members. She said: “I really didn’t expect such a lovely leaving present. I do appreciate the support I’ve had from the members and the volunteers who have worked with me each week to prepare the meal. They really have made the club fun to be part of. “I decided I had to be with my husband of 44 years who is now in a wheelchair and also to spend time with my grandaughter.”

Arthur Pryke said Sue’s departure was a sad loss. “She always produced a lovely meal for us and there has always been a happy atmosphere at the club.” Ninety six year old Jean Carey agreed. “Sue’s a marvellous cook. I don’t think we ever had a bad dinner, her meals were always hot and tasty.” However Sue said she never had any training. “I’ve always loved cooking and did some large catering for family, but cooking for 50 or 60 people every week was something I learnt on the job when the lunch club restarted nine years ago. “It’s pleasing to go having gained the council’s 5 star hygiene rating for the club.” • New members are welcomed at the Wednesday lunch club. Vandals damage community centre

Staff and volunteers were left clearing up Freshbrook Community Centre on 3 April after vandals managed to steal a set of keys from the centre’s office. In the playgroup they scattered toys around the room, pulled items out of the toy library cupboard, broke into the kitchen and spread icing sugar on the floor and outside. Things could have been a lot worse if the vandals had been successful in their attempt to start a fire in the kitchen. They also stole Mario a giant African snail from the playgroup room. MP says solar powered lights could meet government’s foreign aid aims

Cricklade-based charity Lights for Learning, which has installed solar-powered electric lighting units in dozens of schools, clinics and homes across Africa since 2004, could finally attract attention in Government circles. North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has written to Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell to tell him about the successes of the charity and suggesting it meets many of the government’s foreign aid objectives At a display at Basepoint Business Centre on 23 March, charity founder and inventor Roger Mugridge told the MP about the cost-effectiveness and life-saving potential of the solar powered lights which have been installed by volunteers in schools in Zambia, Gambia, Malawi, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and the Philippines. He said: “The volunteers all pay their own way which means we can fit out three classrooms and an office for £1,000. The solar panels and the LED light bulbs have a long life, and the car batteries used to store the energy are easily sourced in-country. “Test results in all the schools have shot up as children and of course adults can study long after the sun goes down, without resorting to dangerous open flame kerosene lamps. “Last year, in addition to installing lights in nine schools in Zimbabwe, we also put them into a remote birthing clinic in Zimbabwe where

Justin Tomlinson said he was particularly interested in how Lights for Learning can contribute to Britain’s commitment to foreign aid. “In straitened economic times

lots of people are asking whether we ought to be clawing back the 0.07% GDP spent on foreign aid. “By diverting some of the funding to support UK based NGOs and charities like Lights for Learning, we have a real opportunity to reinvest in British technology, and make a case for better deployment of foreign aid money. “Lights for Learning is an important example of how British inventors like Roger Mugridge are driving forward solutions that are beneficial to the end user in Africa, but can also provide training and employment opportunities here in the UK, particularly Swindon.” Ironically, although Roger’s efforts have gone largely unnoticed in the UK, the reception he receives in Africa is heroic. Government ministers are keen to meet the volunteers in every country they visit. Roger said: “In Zimbabwe the education department wants us to fit every rural school with solar powered lights because it’s much quicker and cheaper than waiting for a mains supply to be provided.” Justin Tomlinson believes the potential of Lights for Learning is huge. “Nobody else has produced anything like this. The cost is primarily in the manufacturing and transportation. I’m impressed that local people can be involved in the installation and maintenance of the equipment because Roger has designed the systems with simplicity and safety in mind. “It means that the solution is highly sustainable and is a great example of how Swindon can become the technology centre for Europe.” www.lightsforlearning.org

Headway benefits from Sainsbury’s collection

Staff and customers at Sainsbury’s Bridgemead, West Swindon presented the Swindon branch of Headway with £6,600, the proceeds of a year’s fundraising. The total was raised via staff quiz nights, raffles, in-store collections and customer flower wraps. Sainsbury’s community representative Simon Belcher said: “All the colleagues are massively proud of how much was raised for a great cause. We had a lovely time helping Headway during the year.” The Headway Therapy Centre at Headlands Grove currently caters each week for 60 people who have some form of brain disfunction whether it be from injury, accident or assault, from strokes, heart attack, or recovery from a related causal disease such as meningitis. The aim is to enable brain injury survivors to regain and relearn skills that have become impaired as a result of a brain injury, and provide them with support and advice. Activities at the Headway House centre promote cognitive and social rehabilitation, and each person has an individual plan to help them to meet their goals and achieve their potential. Support and advice is provided to carers and loved ones to assist them to cope with and manage the impact of a brain injury on the family. Headway chief executive Alison Burton said the link-up with the

Oakhurst wins Britain’s virtual bike race by peddling the most

Three North Swindon primary schools were placed in the UKs top twenty in the annual national Big Pedal event, supported by cycling charity Sustrans and the government’s Bikeability scheme. Oakhurst Primary School won 8 out of 15 stages to scoop the overall winner’s prize in their category.

The Big Pedal took place between 5 and 23 March and encouraged more than 890,000 cycle trips to school nationwide, as pupils, staff and parents competed to make the fastest time on a virtual ‘Tour d’Angleterre’ from Land’s End to John O’Groats. According to the Big Pedal website, a special mathematical formula converts the number of cycle and scooter journeys into watts, which then generates the time taken over a certain distance. The more journeys, the more watts, the greater the speed, the quicker the time, with

Oakhurst clocking up an impressive 68 hours, 9 minutes and 15 seconds to complete 15 stages of an average 153 miles each. Also in the large primary schools category, Orchid Vale Primary came in tenth place with 76 hours, 27 minutes and 44 minutes, while Haydonleigh came 18th with 79 hours, 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Explaining the reasons for taking part, Oakhurst teacher and Big Pedal coordinator Liz Horrobin said: “It’s our effort to try and clear the cars off the road before and after school and get the children and their

families out and about. “One of the initiatives to get everyone to support our Big Pedal entry was a Saturday bike ride at Lydiard Park, followed by a game of football and cricket. I cycled round talking to parents. One of the mums had bought a bike especially to take part; when I spoke to her on the following Monday she was so excited because they’d also gone out on the Sunday as a family as well.” During the virtual tour Oakhurst also won a number of stage prizes including two Home Nation BMX bikes donated by Halfords and the

book The Boy who Biked the World by Alastair Humphreys. As overall winners the pupils and staff are now looking forwards to a visit from the UK’s number one mountain bike stunt display team MAD. Headteacher Dale Burr said: “There was huge support from the children and parents. Throughout the project over 90 per cent of every class arrived by bike or scooter. It’s also been fantastic for teaching Britain’s geography and learning about the area the cycle ride has passed through.” www.thebigpedal.org.uk

Rotary to the rescue with a new mini-bus for Belarus school

Three members of the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown have returned from Belarus where they handed over a mini-bus to a school in the village of Ozarichi which has received a lot of support from people in Swindon under the umbrella of Wiltshire based Chernobyl Children In Need.

The bus is in constant use transporting children from outlying districts to and from the school and kindergarten, for school trips and to deliver Chernobyl Children In Need parcels to families. Ozarichi is close to the Chernobyl exclusion zone created following the nuclear disaster 26 years ago. Children from the area suffer from poor health owing to contamination of the soil. The bus is now used to

take youngsters in need of treatment on the six hour journey to a specialist hospital in the capital Minsk. Rotary members raised $35,000 (£22,000) over two years to enable the purchase of the bus with the aid

Joint organiser Stella Mortazavi said there were some 200 families of Iranian origin in the Swindon area. “As there are several families with children at Lydiard Millicent we thought we would celebrate Nooroz here. It’s a non-religious event in a Zorastrian tradition pre-dating Islam, that celebrates the renewal of nature and lasts for 13 days. On the last day the whole of Iran goes out and enjoys a picnic.” Deputy headteacher Carly Selby

said the day was an opportunity to learn more about a country which several children come from. “We receive a very narrow stereotyped image of Iran through the media but the chance to work closely with parents from the community has been fantastic. Even though the idea Pi or π has been around for over 4,000 years, it’s a mystery for the majority of the population, but not bright maths pupils at Lydiard Park Academy. To promote maths and the wonder of Pi across the school, the maths department challenged pupils to recite Pi - the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter - in return for a pie. As it’s an irrational number the digits never end or repeat, yet two pupils were able to memorise a huge sequence of the decimal places. Fortnight in May to raise profile of fostering and attract new foster carers

Foster Care Fortnight in May is the Fostering Network’s annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and attract new carers writes Cheryl Keller. From 14 to 27 May, with a theme of fostering: time to care, the campaign will highlight the urgent need for more foster carers and calls on everyone to get behind fostering and support children in care. This year we will particularly focus on the shortage of foster families for teenagers. Swindon Borough Council will join this national campaign to encourage more foster carers to help the growing number of young people who are entering the social

care system. We will be staffing a booth at the Brunel Centre on 16, 17 and 18 May to explain what fostering involves to people who would like to know more. The council is particularly hoping to find more foster families for teenagers as they are the hardest age group to home, and is also on the look-out for more supported lodgings carers and remand foster carers. Supported lodging is a form of independent living in a family setting for young people aged between 16

and 21 who may have been in foster care and are not yet ready to live on their own. There is also a need for remand fostering. It’s a sad fact that some young people can find themselves in trouble with the law. We believe locking up children is never a suitable course of action except for the most serious offences and we need foster carers who are able to provide

Instruments wanted for youth orchestras in Paraguay

In every household across Swindon there is probably a musical instrument of some kind stored in a cupboard or the loft, full of memories of learning to play at school, or perhaps a former hobby. Now, it could have a new life in another country. International composer and conductor Luis Szaran from Paraguay, is asking the town to send him unused instruments for his project that helps poor and disadvantaged young people in his homeland to make a better life for themselves, through music. In between touring the world to conduct top orchestras, Luis runs Sounds of the Earth (Sonidos de la Tierra - www.sonidosdelatierra.org. py) which provides musical education to disadvantaged children and young people.

Before returning to South America, Luis, who is known as El Maestro, told Swindon Link that he is looking for instruments in any condition. Speaking through an interpreter he said: “Sounds of the Earth provides musical education but the projects also become the focus for community life so that young people gain a skill and build confidence. “The range of entertainment opportunities in Paraguay is not as great as Britain but music is in our soul and we use it to bring people together. “Because our project does not have a lot of money we are good at making it go a long way. in the capital is very small because the project leaders are all out across the country training local leaders who form and run the community orchestras.” As guitars are central to South American music Luis added that there is less of a need for these. Sounds of the Earth provides training for crafts people who make stringed instruments such as guitars, violins, and harps. However, there is a great need for brass and wind instruments. “Don’t worry what condition they are in,” he said. “We can repair them and send them to communities where orchestras are coming together.You would be amazed what people living in the poorest situations, in slums or on dumps, can achieve, making and playing instruments made from recovered pipes and bottle tops.” John Holland of Holland Handling is collecting a container of instruments to send to Paraguay. “I’ve been sending items like gardening tools, sewing machines, wheelchairs and crutches, which are fantastic for individuals,” he said. “But recycling musical instruments has a double impact - they help individuals learn to play music, and it brings whole communities together. As well as a good sprinkling of celebrity authors and hot competitions, this year’s festival programme bristles with exploratory and informative events. For example, author Ian Skelly has spent two years working with HRH the Prince of Wales, below, to produce a book and film on the Prince’s visions. Writer Molly Naylor survived the London underground terrorist bombings in 2005 and will present her unusual show, Whenever I Get Blown Up, I Think of You. Resonating with Swindon’s railway past on 9 May at the Steam Museum, historians David Spaven and Julian Holland will give a fascinating illustrated talk based on their book Mapping the Railways, which charts the story of the railways, from early waggonways, through the steam era to today’s diesel and electric trains. And if you want a laugh, there’s comedy too, with word-watching funny-man Alex Horne at the Arts Centre and a cutting edge Alternative Comedy Club at the Platform. Alas, with timing to make an organiser’s heart sink,

three authors have had to cancel their scheduled appearances. Best-selling rom-com novelist Jane Costello has had to pull out as result of being called up for jury service; Born Liars author Ian Leslie has been overwhelmed by family matters; and environmentalist Mark Lynas has been summoned by the president of Korea. Festival organisers are hoping to find suitable replacements for all these authors. One is writer and Radio 4 broadcaster John Summers who will talk on 17 May about the art of complaining to famous people, and getting a laugh out of it. The poem has been organised and overseen by Swindon Artswords and the Swindon Festival of Literature. This launch and presentation is part of the festival programme.

Swindon is ready for the Olympics As of the 1st May Wharf Green in Swindon town centre will become officially an Olympic Live Site. Swindon is one of only 22 sites across the country that will be showing all the action from the capital. From the 1st May you will start to see the Olympic theme taking over the entire town! In stage one the Big Screen in the town centre will take on a different surrounding, and in stage two the colours, angles and rings will be splashed across the town. We welcome everyone to make their way down to the Big Screen throughout the Olympic period. Here, not only will you be treated to seating, picnic areas and ‘Have a Go’ areas, you will also be able to watch exclusive footage from the games. Throughout the two weeks of the games (27th July – 12th August), and the Paralympic Games (29th August – 9th September) Wharf Green will be fully equipped for you and your family to feel a part of the momentous events. 24-hour seating will be available during the games, so feel free to come down and set-up for the day, and don’t forget

to come down for Swindon’s opening ceremony on Friday 27 July from 6.30pm. The Swindon Borough Councils Leisure Services Team will be hosting its own games and challenges to keep you entertained on this evening, before showing the full opening ceremony from London. Food and beverages will be available so make sure you pop down for the whole night. From Saturday 28 July until the end of the Olympics on Sunday 12 August there will be an activity area where you can try some of the Olympic sports, information of where you can take part locally, and areas serving food and beverages all day. From badminton to basketball, football to fencing there will be a whole range of activities to get the whole family involved in – all for free. Don’t forget parking only costs £2 for 4 hours in the town centre, so it’s the perfect place to set-up for the whole day. Embroiderers stitch together special exhibition

A fascinating selection of colourful, complex and intricate embroidery specially created by members of the Great Western Embroiderers is on display in the State Rooms of Lydiard House until 10 June. Premiere of teenager’s film on child abuse

Darren Potter, 16, will be premiering his latest film Mr Wiggles – which has already been nominated in the British Short Screenplay Competition - on 17 May at the Empire Cinema, Greenbridge. A former victim of bullying and a dyslexia sufferer, Darren, from Upper Stratton, said: “I didn’t hesitate when asked to be the director of photography on Mr Wiggles, about child abuse. This was something I wanted to bring to life and hope it helps people who have been

West Swindon woman Collette O’Malley from Grange Park is taking on the challenge of a lifetime to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care. In October the former Greendown pupil will join a group of 20 to 30 other people who will trek along the Great Wall for up to eight hours a day for six days through remote parts of China. Collette has started a rigorous training plan of gym work and long walks. The trek is a tough challenge that pushes participants to their limits and for Collette nutrition, stretching and pounding those pavements will become an important part of life for the next few months. Rotary hold joint bank holiday fundraiser with RSPCA

North Wiltshire RSPCA and Old Town Rotary Club are getting together this year for what they hope will be the first of many collaborations. The RSPCA annual dog show and the Rotary duck race are being held on the same day, Bank Holiday Monday 4 June, at the Wescott Recreation Ground, opposite The Running Horse on Wootton Bassett Road, Swindon. Dog registrations start at 10am with the first class starting at 11am. Classes include the dog with the waggiest tail, the dog that looks most like its owner, and the best rescue dog. The duck race will start between 3.30pm and 4pm. Ducks will be sold in aid of Hop Skip & Jump, with 50 per cent to other Rotary charities. Schools enterprise challenge to support Nepal orphanage

To celebrate the third birthday of the Friends of Angel’s Orphanage this May, charity founders Rosa and Ian Matheson are inviting six Swindon schools to participate in a micro-finance enterprise competition to double their money in aid of the Nepalese orphans. Explaining the project, Rosa said: “As it’s our third birthday we’d like to double that up and offer six schools in Swindon the opportunity to take part. “We will loan each participating school £50 which we would like them to double up as many times as they can to raise money for Angel’s.

“This has got to be done properly, with a clear business plan and financial forecasting, so it will appeal particularly to the young entrepreneurs of Swindon. “We will judge the competition on the basis of which school has done the best planning and forecasting, as well as who raises the most money, and the winning school will get to keep £50 of their profit to invest in another project of their choice.” It is fitting that school-children in the UK begin to help the Friends as Rosa hopes to establish an educational trust fund to assist Angel’s orphans in the future. Reflecting on how the charity has grown, Rosa said: “From sending £50 the first month we set up the charity in 2009, we are now sending £500 each month, which is just enough to pay for food and the basic necessities for each of Angel’s 21 children. However the effects of inflation means that very soon this amount will be too little so we’re always looking for new ways to boost funds. “We need committed monthly donors to help keep things ticking over. In the Wessex Brass Band Association Youth Competition earlier in the year trophies were gained by the 35 players in the Intermediate Band who came third out of seven bands in their category. The Youth Band with 25 players brought back awards for solo performances and the bass players won Best Bass Section trophy for the second year. The common element with all the bands is conductor John Winterflood who is developing talent

“The children in the Gambia face hardship every day,” said Neil. “However they have some wonderful values which sustain them and which we could learn from.” The curriculum emphasises local traditions such as dance, maskmaking and growing plants, with the aim of enabling children to get the most out of their daily lives and experience. As more schools in the Gambia have expressed an interest in the curriculum, the education ministry and a local teaching college have become keen to roll it out nationally. However, as Neil explained, there are not enough resources for this to happen. He said: “In the Gambia the government funds education from age 7, so pre-schools are set up by volunteers, some of whom have worked their socks off to help develop early years education.” “I have fully-funded one preschool for 250 children myself, and have provided the resources for five other schools to carry out the curriculum. But now we need to find ways in which resources such as costumes, masks and weighing scales can be made or adapted locally, creating jobs in the meantime.” Neil is very conscious of the importance of sustainability, having visited the Gambia a number of times and seen the consequences of the actions of wellmeaning people who are unable to continue maintaining schools. He said: “The Gambia is full of buildings that were intended as schools, but stand empty

because there are no funds to run them. It costs £9,000 a year to keep a school for 230 children open. It isn’t a lot really, but it does need a commitment of at least ten years to have any impact.” On a recent trip Neil encountered a man who proved to be a natural teacher of pre-school children operating out of very dilapidated accommodation. Neil said: “The rooms this guy was using were so scabby, but he’s such a wonderful teacher, that I’m afraid I’ve promised to build him a school too.” Neil’s experiences in the Gambia have also shaped what he writes and teaches, with his Gambiainspired book Fatou Fetch The Water having been selected as the key text for the UK National Summer Reading Challenge 2012. In his training programmes for teachers and carers, Neil’s Gambian reflections have led him to urge others to think differently about what education is for. He said: “We need to stop all the external pressures on children. In the Gambia, despite the poverty, they share in a way that would shame us.
