Not a bright idea
After three years persuading Swindon Council that the speed limit on Tadpole Lane outside the two special schools in North Swindon should be reduced, staff were outraged in early April to discover council contractors had attached a 50mph to the school signpost.
Mandy Coakley and Lorna Breslin, not impressed by Tadpole Lane speed sign
Special needs teacher and health and safety officer Lorna Breslin said the school has a log of the many incidents where speeding drivers have nearly smashed into minibusses full of children. She said, “last year the council put down road markings on either side of the entrance to indicate a school. Then they put up a sign showing drivers how fast they can go past our entrance. Children come to the schools by mini-bus and taxi from all over Swindon, but many drivers seem to ignore they might be turning into the driveway or
leaving. There have been so many near misses.” A council spokesman said, “the contractors putting up new legally-required 50mph repeater signs along Tadpole Lane used an existing sign pole because it was cheaper than putting up a new one, and reduces clutter at the roadside. “Now it’s been drawn to our attention we have moved the sign to a more appropriate place.” The school is continuing to call on the council to install even clearer messages to drivers such as solar powered flashing notices.

The increasingly derelict building on the edge of Peatmoor Lagoon was bought at auction for the asking price of £100,000 at the end of April by a group of Chinese entrepreneurs from the South coast who have indicated that they want reopen it as a restaurant. The large building on two floors was launched as the Chinese Experience in 1991 and over the years went through a number of owners until the end of 2008 when the recession killed off business. Since then it has been attacked by vandals and taggers. James Gregory of commercial agents Alder King said legal arrangements for the sale to the new owners had yet to be completed but he hoped that the building could ‘return to its former glory.’ Sarah Chilvers, who lives opposite, said, “I’m absolutely overjoyed that the Chinese Experience will be a restaurant again. Swindon Council’s litter pickers swung into action after Alnwick resident Betty Smith complained to councillor Steve Wakefield about the state of Toothill Park where she and her husband enjoy walking their dog.

“It was looking very nasty with bits of burnt out cars and motorbikes, all the winter leaves on the paths and horrible amounts of litter under the trees,” said Mrs Smith. “We regularly come back with a bag of litter collected along the way.” But Mrs Smith was pleasantly surprised when Streetsmart officer for parks Richard Beale organised a blitz of the eyesore space. He said, “it was a pleasure to liaise with Mrs Smith and coun Wakefield. We rely on residents telling us where problems are and we’ll organise a clean up team.” He added that he was investigating fly tipping by people living close to the park.

Fashion fix for disabled children
Clothing charity Dressability is expanding its work to help disabled children and their parents keep up with the latest fashion trends - by making clothes more user-friendly. While nine out of ten people say they are satisfied with the quality of the services they receive – a significant minority say that they would like to move to a different GP practice. This could be for convenience or, for example, because their current practice does not offer more specialised services. To find out more a leaflet Your GP, your choice, your say is available from Swindon Local Involvement Network (LINk) office on 497777 or from: www.gpchoice.dh.gov.uk

It’s the time to review council tax benefits
Council tax bills have arrived in the post - and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau is offering some timely advice for those who are eligible to receive reductions in their payments. The CAB is reminding those who get help paying their council tax to check how much that benefit will be during the next year - and keep the council informed of any change in circumstances. Failure to inform Swindon Council means paying too much or too little and perhaps having to repay money back in the future. Key changes include: • an increase in income - wages or pension, including changes in the income of other people in the household; • a change in the benefits - if you’ve started or stopped receiving a benefit; • a change in savings - up or down; • a change in how many people live at home; If you are over 55 and have a query about benefits call the CAB over 55s advice line on 491889, Monday to Friday, 10am to 1pm. Anyone can ask about council tax by calling the council on 08458 500 962.

Women’s walk for Prospect Prospect Hospice is looking for women to sign up for its flagship fundraising event, the third Starlight Walk around Swindon, on 26 June. Last year over 600 Starlight Walkers raised £65,000 for Prospect, many women taking part in memory of loved ones. This year - Prospect’s thirtieth - organisers are hoping over 1,000 walkers will take part in either 10k or 15k distances. It’s been described as a mixture of a girls’ night out, a physical challenge and, for some, a time for reflection. But Prospect is also keen for men to support the event as volunteer marshals along the route. Register at www.prospect-hospice.net/starlight or call 815142.

Work starts on Mouldon Hill
The traffic congestion outside the locked gates of Mouldon Hill Park opposite Taw Hill should be a thing of the past by the summer when a 2.2 hectares close to the entrance is developed. Work has started on building two car parks for 30 vehicles, a tarmac area and a stone and dust overflow area, next to the previously built access road off Thamesdown Drive. A large football pitch and two small junior pitches have been ploughed and prepared for grass seed. These will be ready for use in a year’s time. In the Autumn a tree lined avenue will be planted each side of the access road. The developed site will be secured by fencing and kissing-gates will give pedestrians access to Mouldon Hill lake and the park-land itself.

‘A Quality Education for a Lifetime of Opportunities’ Broad Hinton Church of England Primary School is a village school situated in a favourable rural area a few miles south-west of Swindon. We were founded in 1743 by Thomas Bennet and taken over by the LEA about 100 years later. Over recent years we have extended our facilities to accommodate four mixed-age classes, a large hall where hot meals are served, a multi-purpose unit housing a pre-school facility and a conservatory area for individual or small group teaching, including a multi-sensory learning library for parents and carers to access resources for learning at home. Everyone knows each other throughout the school, from the oldest to the very youngest, staff, parents and children alike, giving us a warm family atmosphere. Our professional and enthusiastic staff provide a safe and secure environment and a creative and stimulating curriculum.
Due to family relocations, we have the opportunity to accept children in year groups throughout the school and you are warmly invited to make an appointment to visit us. Oakhurst build on track for September
In the early part of the year the building of Oakhurst Primary School was 16 weeks behind schedule, but contractors have poured in more workers and the progress looks good for children to move from the mobiles on the adjacent site into their brand new school in September. “All the snow delayed the brick-laying but the builders tripled their workforce and caught up,” said headteacher Dale Burr. “Some of the scaffolding is now coming down, the children have made visits to the site and we are about to assess some mock classrooms so we can be sure the building is completed exactly as we need it.” Abbey Meads councillor Vera Tomlinson said rumours that the school would not be finished on time were totally incorrect. ”There are always people who voice their concerns or are quick to criticise but everything is going extremely well and the school will be up and running on time and to budget.” From September Oakhurst will triple in size from the present 49 children to over 200 in reception to Year 6. Call the school office on 734754 about enrolling for places and arranging a visit. www.oakhurst.swindon.sch.uk • Oakhurst’s temporary buildings will be dismantled in late July and rebuilt during the summer holidays to provide extra space at Catherine Wayte Primary School in Abbey Meads.

Inventing to impress across Europe
Children from the eight schools partnered with Tregoze Primary School through the pan-European Comenius programme were set the task of thinking of new inventions for a gathering of teachers in Poland in March. Youngsters from Tregoze came up with handles for plastic bags, heated clothing, bird feeders and secure boxes to keep secrets in. Project coordinator Summer Fitzgerald said, “we wanted to show that Uplands is a happy, vibrant community with lively colourful

They stand like above ground archaeology, unexplained, unloved and largely ignored, perhaps surprising the passer-by, yet mysterious and brooding in the landscape. Swindon has an impressive collection of public sculptures. They are an important and unique feature of the town’s cultural make-up and need to be recognised. The Link is calling for Swindon Council to review its sculptures, interpret them for the public and find ways to repair the pieces in poor condition and look after them in the future.

Early railway pioneers struggle with engines
Railway historian Steve Wakefield continues his reflections on the 175th year of the Great Western Railway and considers the choice of rolling stock for the new railway line. Brunel had thought through his requirements for locomotives to haul the trains along the GWR mainline as early as 1836 by making enquiries from constructors of locomotives and he issued clear ideas for the most suitable locomotive that would work on his railway. He wrote: ‘It is not to exceed 10½ tons exclusive of tender and if above 8 tons is to be carried upon 6 wheels. The width in clear between the rails is 7ft 0” and the height of the chimney as usual… and for the purpose of improvement to be similar to the same parts of the best engines now used on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.’ Brunel ordered 20 locomotives from different makers and some of these did not perform as expected. Though he was without a doubt an accomplished engineer his specified locomotives had proved inadequate for the job on the GWR, soon to be referred to despairingly as ‘Freaks.’ Brunel said of Stephenson’s North Star, which had originally been built for an American railway at

History of the GWR to help orphanage in Nepal
Railway historian and charity fund-raiser Rosa Matheson has just published her fourth book entitled The GWR Story which presents the fascinating history of Swindon’s most famous founding company. “It has lots of pictures, and little-known facts about GWR’s record-breaking history, including an insight into the company’s recycling ethos, long before anyone understood what it is to be ‘green’,” said Rosa. “All profits from the book will go towards Angel’s Orphanage in Nepal,” said Rosa, who has been leading the campaign to raise funds for the charity since May last year. Rosa’s other railway history titles are also just going into their second edition, including The All Rosa’s books are published Fair Sex: Women and the Great through History Press and are Western Railway and Railway available from Rosa. Mayors inside The Works
STORY
Unofficial Swindon railway works photographer Roy Nash makes a personal contribution to this year’s 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway by exhibiting images from his archives featuring visits by past mayors of Swindon to The Works. The exhibition takes place at West Swindon Library from Thursday 13 May until Friday 28 May during library opening times. The pictures look past the official poses for Roy’s camera and portray the lost world of working what everybody of the day knew as ‘inside.’

Benefits from being a Friend of Lydiard Park Annual meeting on Saturday 8 May
Thanks to a bequest to the Friends of Lydiard Park by a long time supporter, the late Miss Norah Hardwick, the Friends of Lydiard Park can now support projects to maintain the fabric of the buildings and contribute to the acquisition of artifacts that would enhance the visitor experience. The first major commitment has been a substantial contribution to the appeal launched by St Mary’s Church which is in desperate need of conservation work. An application to English Heritage for financial support towards the cost of repairing the roof has been submitted and the Hardwick bequest will help the work start at the end of the year. Once weathertight the church will be raising £800,000 to conserve the historic wall paintngs and monuments within the building. In return for the financial contribution, Swindon Council is giving Friends free entry to Lydiard House and the walled garden. At the annual general meeting on 8 May, 2.30pm, distinguished architect Michael Grey will talk about how Lydiard has influenced his work designing modern mansions through to social housing. Becoming a friend costs £10 or £18 for a couple. The AGM will be rounded off with tea and cakes. For details of becoming a Friend of Lydiard Park, pick up an application form at the house or call 770401.

Along with specialist items such as gluten free and nut free foods, and environmentally friendly household cleaners, Swindon Pulse Wholefoods Coop, in Curtis Street, buys mainly from local suppliers. Its eggs are on the shelves soon after being laid‚ using significantly fewer food miles, and are cheaper than in supermarkets. The bread supplier has recently been awarded second place in national bread making awards. With its traditional decor, personal service and specialist offerings, Pulse is a throwback to times gone by, but has all the latest products and a website people can use to email product queries. Coop member Colin Cabbage, said, “with the recession, people are going to the big stores and we’re seeing the death of the small independent shop. A breakthrough in the treatment of cellulite
Advanced Beauty Clinic at Basepoint Centre in West Swindon has introduced the latest innovation from Italy, Eporex Mesotherapy, which diminishes the visible signs of cellulite. Using the unique technology Isophoresis, Eporex is a non-invasive long lasting treatment which pushes an exclusive formula of ingredients painlessly through the skin. Natural plant extracts, homeopathic remedies, vitamins, minerals and amino-acids reach directly where body tissue and cells utilise them quickly. The ingredients can be modified to disperse unwanted fat in the affected area. Sessions take 50 minutes and the number of treatments required varies. However a major improvement in look and feel of skin texture is seen after just a few sessions. Eporex Mesotherapy offers a natural and effective alternative to surgery for liposuction, face lifts or tummy tucks. In May Advanced Beauty Clinic is offering 15 per cent off normal prices for bookings. For details and a free consultation call 07870 262556.

Fancy Tea arrives at Toomers Toomers garden centre has opened a cafe in association with Lesley Allcorn who set up Fancy Tea five years ago in Shrivenham and South Marston. Each venue has its own character said Lesley. “Our prices are reasonable, the staff chatty and happy, and we have a core belief that the customer comes first and should leave wanting to come back again.” Make the short trip to Toomers soon to try Fancy Tea.
Keen interest rewarded with Fairtrade prizes
A Spring into Action roadshow in North Swindon Library at the end of March helped people consider swapping their car for alternative forms of transport such as bike, bus or walking, as well as promoting www.carshareswindon.com
Joe Rogers from Freshbrook, above, won a hamper of Fairtrade goodies for answering questions related to information displayed on each stall. Joe, a keen member of 1st Swindon Sea Scouts in Haydon Wick, said the event inspired him to get his bike out of the shed and start riding to Greendown School where he is in Year 7.
Fairtrade site puts you in touch with fairness
www.swindonfairtrade.org.uk provides ten simple and effective ways you can support small scale producers and farmers in developing countries. The site also lists where to buy Fairtrade goods in Swindon, and cafes serving tea/coffee when out shopping. One small click by you could lead to giant leaps forward in living conditions for a farmer and his or her family in India, Africa or South America.

The ponds act as settlement beds for water running off the former landfill site. Different varieties of reeds have been planted to filter out contaminants as water flows by gravity through the system before it is allowed to drain into the River Ray closeby. Designed by Swindon Borough Council with assistance from the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust at Slimbridge, the project is saving the council £240,000 a year in pumping water into tankers for specialist treatment near Bristol Site manager Bob Fisher said, “the wet winter months have shown that the water is contained within the system, save for a few areas where the water is weeping through the lining. This should seal
itself over coming months. We’ll see the desired ecology developing during the summer as the reeds grow and get to work on pollutants washed off the forest area.” The park also has a separate deep level collection system whereby some 400 litres of polluted water is pumped daily to the Thames Water treatment works at Barnfield Road. The site can be visited from Sparcells or via the River Ray Parkway cycle/walking route. In response to an appeal in the March Link, Bob was contacted by four keen bird watchers who are observing how the birdlife takes to the site. Bob has posted a list of the reeds planted on the notice board on the edge of the site close to Sparcells.

Electric vehicles are the coming thing and Mark Butler of Blunsdonbased company e-motion has opened a new showroom to display the town’s largest and best selection of power-assisted bikes and electric scooters. He’s holding an open day on Saturday 22 May, 10am to 4pm, where you can discover how an electric bike can add a bit of extra zip to travelling on two wheels with pedals. “The bikes are appealing to all kinds of people, not just younger commuters,” said Mark. “The other day I had an enquiry from a lady whose daughter has ME, who’s looking for ways to enjoy family time outdoors on bikes without it being too tiring.” “Older people who don’t want the expense of a car but still want to be out and about are also very interested in electric bikes.” given the cost of fuel which seems The government’s cycle to work to keep going up, it makes a lot of scheme helps in buying a power- sense to consider one for shorter, assisted bike; it offers up to 40 per everyday journeys.” cent discount to the employees of Some models purchased on the companies who are registered. day will qualify for a discount. Indian orphanage fund tops £5,000
Over the last three years Ali McCallum from Walcot has raised £5,000 for Palna orphanage in New Delhi and he aims to donate another £1,000 by the end of the year. Ali has sold Christmas cards to friends and family, held cake sales at school, washed cars and chopped wood. Most recently, some of his pictures have been used by Palna on cards, sold to raise money in India. As an infant Ali was left in a basket outside the orphanage before being adopted and brought to Swindon by Neil and Kauser McCallum. Readers respond with generosity
Within a week of our article about vandals slashing a trampoline for disabled children donations flooded in, more than covering the cost of a replacement. In April we reported the damage, including safety ropes being cut on a climbing frame in the play garden shared by Special Tots and the Koalas Special Opportunities playgroup at Salt Way Centre in Middleleaze. Stephanie Hathaway, manager of Koalas, said, “the offers poured in, it restored our faith in human nature.” She thanked readers for their responses, including Zurich, Swindon College students, who raised over £50, and Stonehouse Christian Fellowship, who donated £170‚ more than enough to cover the £220 bill. • The DeVere Hotel hosted the Koala’s Spring Ball on 21 March which raised £2,707, topping last year’s total though fewer people attended. Stephanie said, “it was a super evening thanks to the DeVere and everybody who came along. It’s a fantastic total in this economic climate.” Stephanie Hathaway, showing off the vandalism which readers have now put right
