Supermums raise £20,000 after theft of dance girls’ cash

A group of Swindon dancers aged 13 to 18 from Bobbie’s School of Dance managed to get to California for a Dance Excellence Festival in early April when an anonymous businessman paid for their airfares. They had turned up at Heathrow on 2 April to discover ﬂights had not been booked. Parents quickly decided they were going to do everything they could to make sure the dancers had their big chance. Local band makes it to the Big Weekend

Swindon band Beatbullyz will feature on the Introducing Stage for breaking acts at Lydiard Park on 10 May. Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who concentrates on discovering new acts selected Beatbullyz to appear and interviewed them on his evening show on 15 April. “I get up to 400 CDs a week to review, plus MP3 files and requests to watch YouTube clips,” said Huw. “BBC Wiltshire put forward Beatbullyz for the Big Weekend and I’m really pleased they’re appearing. They have a real freshness in their sound; it’s got energy, passion and honesty, they’re being themselves and bring a lot of fun to their music. “The Swindon music scene is very strong; there is a lot of talent in the town and also across Wiltshire. The Fringe shows are going to be really good.” The band members - Disco, Bozo, Philonius Funk and frontman Bully - will also be appearing at the Rehab, as part of the Fringe series of concerts before the Big Weekend on 7 May. Dominic Weston-Smith, who oversees the exhibition programme, said the hospital art committee is keen on closer links with Swindon schools and is delighted with the high standard of work submitted

Twenty five children from Ecole Jules Ferry in Neuville were accompanied by their teacher and three students on the return leg of the exchange; ten youngsters from Red Oaks visited their school last July. The youngsters learned about Swindon’s history by dressing up as Victorians at Steam, went to The Living Rainforest near Didcot and took in London tourist sights. The French visitors were struck by how hectic life is for their English counterparts, both at school and at home, and also the tight security in school which was completely new to them. “The rhythm of life is so different here, much more high tempo,” said teacher, Karine Michonneau. “Our school day is much more relaxed. For example our midday break for lunch is two hours long and we have a permanent cafeteria for lunch. Here children have about 20 minutes for lunch.” Mum Georgia Pike, right, hosted two French boys and admitted to feeling apprehensive because of

her own bad experience of a school exchange. “We were all quite nervous and were worried about not being able to understand what they were saying, but Alan and Clement are two lovely lads who have fitted in so well. As a parent the exchange has been wonderful.” Lucy Pike said she had been worried about talking with the visitors. “It’s been really good; they liked the Playstation and Wii, so we could understand each other without a problem. ” Alan Cointepas complimented English cooking. “We like it here; Madame Pike is a good cook; we liked her shepherd’s pie. We also like fish and chips.”

Touched by this year’s Blue Peter appeal, a group of friends from Brook Field Primary School decided to help get meals to hungry children in the UK and overseas.

Eleven year old Charlotte Butler is a regular viewer of the programme and asked her friends Loren James, Alexandra Tong and Natasha Roy to help with a bring and buy sale in March. The girls realised that their names spell CLAN which became their team name. They set up a stall in Charlotte’s

garage and attracted good support from friends and neighbours despite a heavy layer of snow on the ground. The girls sold handicrafts, bric-a-brac, cakes and hot drinks to raise £100 on the day. As some of their friends were unable to get there, they asked their headteacher, Melanie Sancto, if they could set up

Jake the Juggler has restarted the Swindon Juggling & Circus Skills Club at Lower Shaw Farm on Wednesdays, 6pm to 8pm. A campaign launched in March by Swindon Council aims to increase the number of adults engaging in the arts by 3 per cent under the title: Swindon Does Arts. The plan has been developed by Swindon Arts Renaissance, a partnership of local arts organisations and artists. Swindon is one of only three local authorities in the South West to have included cultural activity as one of the 35 performance indicators in its Local Agreement Plan. The challenge for Swindon Does Arts is to boost residents’ involvement and to persuade people to see culture more widely. It is estimated that over 38 per cent of the population are already engaged in arts, from taking part in music, singing and drama groups to more personal hobbies and handicrafts such as knitting or embroidery, playing an instrument or taking photographs. As thousands look forward to the Festival of Literature, Radio One Big Weekend and the Mela, it is clear that Swindon deﬁnitely does do arts. The project’s success will be measured by a telephone survey by Ipsos Mori. FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE 4th - 16th May The excitement mounts! Big names coming from the world of books, radio, television, comedy, politics, poetry, and sport include David Attenborough, Margaret Drabble, Nigel Lawson, Michael Morpurgo, Julian Clary, Colin Dexter, Alistair McGowan, Rory McGrath, Simon Armitage, Marcus Trescothick and Bob Wilson. Tickets for a number of these, including David Attenborough and Michael Morpurgo, have already sold out, and others are going fast. To avoid disappointment, Festival followers in Swindon are urged to get their tickets without delay. But it’s not just the big names that catch the eye. For example, on Monday 11th May at the Arts Centre, a fascinating evening all about music is rightly attracting attention. This two-part event, titled the Triumph of Music and Utter : Jazz, looks at the role of music in recent history, the making of musical stars and celebrities; and then celebrates music with a fabulous performance by jazz singer Ruthie Culver and her band. Two other events dealing with momentous matters in human history take place on 6th and 7th May. Deborah Moggach will talk about her adaptation of Anne Frank’s Diary for BBC1 television; and Leslie Wilson will discuss her book that looks at how, in times of hatred and war, love can conquer almost all. For anyone who would like to see what insights and entertainment is offered by the world of poetry, there are lots of events from which to choose. For instance, on 9th May the Youth Slam and the Swindon Slam are two hugely entertaining poetry performance competitions, with performers of all ages strutting their stuff on stage. These promise to be both thought-provoking and laughter-making events. On a more serious but nevertheless highly engaging note, two of the country’s top poets appear on a double bill on 13th May. Simon Armitage is poetry’s Mr Cool with his tight hot-topic verse; and Ruth Padel, great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin, is tipped as a future Poet Laureate. And if you want a pint with your poem, in a bar or cabaret setting, there’s a choice of events and venues, at the Town Hall, the Victoria, and the 12Bar. If you are new to poetry, all these performances will give you a great introduction and be a real treat. For the young and young at heart, there’s a whole day not to be missed. The ever-popular Children and Families Day at Lower Shaw Farm on Sunday 10th May is full of good things. These include a stunning and dramatic alfresco performance of Precious Bane, a story of truth and beauty; a workshop on how to make story boards; an evening of campfire storytelling; and an introduction to the life of the hedgehog in A Prickly Affair! Netball club calls for players for next season

Ferndale Netball Club will be training throughout the summer and are recruiting players to maintain three teams in next season’s netball league starting in September. The club is the oldest in Swindon and recently gained sponsorship from Capita outsourcing services. Players of any age and experience are welcome. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is calling on volunteers to come forward to help out at its biggest annual fundraising event – the Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon – on Sunday 3 May. Guests of the creepy crawly kind are rarely welcome in the home, especially fleas. Bravery for bear cause

Jumping out of an aircraft was the most frightening thing she has ever done, but Sarah Chilvers from Peatmoor overcame her terror in March to raise money for bear rescue charity Animals Asia Foundation. The sponsored sky dive is one of a series of fundraising events organised by Sarah and friends this year in aid of the charity which rescues moon bears from bile farms. In October Sarah will trek with her husband Dave and friend Louise Wack through the northern hills of Vietnam before arriving and felt dizzy; I think I forgot to at a newly opened bear sanctuary breathe. Many readers of The Link will know me by now and that’s largely due to the great exposure since launching ‘Chernobyl Children’s Life Line’ in Swindon. It all started back in Easter 2006 when, as a family recently arrived in Swindon, we were hosting 10 year old Kristina Ezhenkova from Belarus who was diagnosed with cancer whilst staying with us. I wanted as much coverage of her plight as I could get and needed to raise £2,700 in two weeks to cover hospital theatre costs for an operation. All the newspapers, magazines, radio and television I approached supported us at the time. But it was The Link that took a true interest, not just to present a sad story but to become an ongoing source of ideas and invaluable contacts which were shared with encouragement. One such person back in 2006 was Sam Jarvis who made a very kind donation from the fund to provide medical treatment for her late daughter Charlie to help Kristina. N e x t t h e re c a m e c o n t a c t with Brendon Ball of Freshbrook Dental Practice who already had connections to Chernobyl. With his Ukrainian wife Natasha he had set up the charity Smile Menders which provides much needed dental treatment in Ukraine. This introduction has been priceless: Brendon sees and treats all of our children who come to Swindon on respite care. The decay and problems they have is beyond comprehension so it’s life changing for the children and in two cases life saving. Brendon’s commitment is phenomenal and he is even coming to Belarus with me during May to discover the dental problems at root level. Very quickly after the articles appeared, my ‘phone started to ring. “I’ve seen you in The Link”; “we’ve been following your story in The Link and would like to host children”; “I’ve just read The Link and I’d like to make a donation.” Thanks to this reaction the charity started to grow and grow; directly from The Link an amazing 18 host families have come on board, there is now fantastic local awareness and support, and thousands of pounds have been raised. More recently Hanif Robbani, at The Bombay Lounge, has been very generous in his support from the charity curry nights held there. All the people that Link editor Roger Ogle has introduced me to are all very genuine and have become good friends. After being nominated for the Mayor’s Pride of Swindon myself it makes you stand back and take

a look at all the people that have helped you along the way. I would like everybody to know how Chernobyl Children’s Life Line has been able to help so many children in Belarus because of The Link.

Looking to the future Local families have just hosted eight boys from Belarus with cancer, accompanied by a translator and a doctor. The respite care will give them valuable extra months and a fighting chance to get strong again. And in July we will host our largest ever group - 40 children for the whole summer. This is obviously a huge task. All organisational time is donated free and the same goes for the commitment from all of the families. The medical, dental and optical checks the children have are given without charge. But ensuring the children are able to travel and enjoy their time in Swindon is expensive. Money is needed for their flights, for coach transport and to pay for visits to attractions. You can help in lots of different ways: • take part in the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown 20 mile midnight walk along the Ridgeway on 13 June; • visit our stall at Blunsdon Indoor Market every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 9am-3pm; • organise a fundraising event in your school, club, group, business; • make a cash donation or even commit to sponsor a child in Belarus. Whatever you can do will help children in Belarus who have very limited prospects.
