There was a tremendous response to the Blunsdon House Hotel mother’s day poem competition published in the March Link. Adam Stratford’s thoughtful entry was selected to win his mum Cheryl a £150 voucher for great day of pampering at the hotel’s health club. Adam, 8, from Woodhall Park said he had spotted the competition when he was reading The Link with his dad Paul. “I said I wanted to have a go and worked out some words that rhymed with my dad. I did a few practice poems before I wrote it out to send in. “I was really pleased when the prize arrived in the post for my mum; she was so surprised. I’m glad she won it because my mum is the best in the word.” Cheryl said she was delighted that Adam had thought of her. “I was surprised that he had worked out a poem. He’s very logical in approaching a problem; I’ve always thought of him as more of a scientist. It was such a sweet thought.”

New free North Swindon map is a sat-nav buster About twenty roads have been added to the latest edition of the North Swindon map, published by The Link, which will be available from 1 May.

Haydon End, before house building started

Since the first edition in 2000 the map has been an essential reference guide for anybody trying to find their way through the maze like street layout which confuses newcomers and those who have lived in the area for sometime. Created with the assistance of the planning and highways department at Swindon Council the map is the only large scale means of locating both roads and facilities like schools and open spaces. And it’s more up to date than even the most hi-tech sat-nav system - for a few weeks at least. Haydon End to the south of Thamesdown Drive has seen the most growth since the last edition a year ago. The first roads built

had a Polish connection to reflect Swindon’s Torun twin-town link. The latest have a literary connection. Names from Jasper Ffordes fantasy books set in Swindon give some roads such as Thursday Street a contemporary feel. Characters from Shakespeare’s plays can be found, and Haydon Wick Parish Council suggested names drawn from the West Country writer Thomas Hardy should be used. The map is available from North and West Swindon Libraries, Swindon Information Centre and Haydon Wick Parish Council offices, and a number of advertisers like Dewhurst Estate Agents.

Help us illustrate the next West Swindon map Community logos needed The Link is planning to reprint the West Swindon map in the Autumn, the only large scale map of the area. Taking a cue from North Swindon where every neighbourhood has been given a logo by the original developers - right we’re planning to do the same in the West and we need your help. We’re asking readers to consider what graphic symbols or typestyles could summarise their communities: Toothill, Freshbrook, Grange Park, Westlea, Eastleaze, Shaw, Nine Elms, Middleleaze, Ramleaze, Peatmoor, Sparcells. You can send in rough sketches of a logo, or suggest a slogan that fits your community. You might be a professional graphic designer or illustrator, or a student in these disciplines. Your entry will be very welcome. In all cases the community name has to be included and because of the limited space available, the graphic must be simple, yet say something about the area. The campaigners have asked for a wider community based discussion on how mobile phone companies seek permission for their equipment, and the health worries many people have about living close to a mast. A planning officer will attend to explain the process of applying for permission, including informing the community in advance.

Dealing with the litter problem The April Link asked for readers who take it upon themselves to keep their neighbourhood tidy to contact us about the areas they cover. Some people are sick and tired of seeing their streets and open spaces defaced by litter and by Swindon Council’s inability to remove it, let alone supply enough litter bins. Rather than see rubbish accumulate they have adopted an area to look after. So far we’re aware of people doing this in parts of Nine Elms, Peatmoor, Middleleaze, Common Platt, The Bramptons, and by the Woodhall Park bridge. In Haydon Wick the parish council uses tax payer’s money to employ a contractor to empty the litter bins and keep the tidal wave of rubbish in play areas, open spaces and footpaths under control. Red Oaks branches out into South Africa A visit to South Africa by teachers from Red Oaks Primary School in Priory Vale has established links with Mojalefa Farm School in the Clarens District and provided a wealth of material for next term’s work. Year 1 & 2 class teachers Emily Hancock and Olwyn Menzies spent ten days in Clarens on a trip funded by a British Council grant during the February half term. They worked with 11 to 13 year olds on the topic of shelters and homelessness, which the Year 6 Red Oaks pupils had just studied. Plant a tree in Wootton Bassett The Great Western Community Forest team has joined with North Wilts District Council and Wootton Bassett Town Council to bring a free Forest Festival to Wootton Bassett on Saturday 19 May, 10am to 5pm at Ballard’s Ash Playing Fields and Jubilee Lake Nature Reserve. There will be some fantastic green festival highlights for this new event. Alongside the usual activities like willow weaving, drumming, juggling, wood turning, recycled arts activities, solar and bike powered gadgets, there will be local bands playing on the festival stage, workshops run by young people and food served up by local caterers and the Wiltshire Farmers’ Market Association. Lighter lunchboxes at Peatmoor Pupils at an officially recognised Eco School have cut down on the rubbish in their lunch boxes, by reducing packaging and giving up unhealthy foods. The initiative at Peatmoor Primary which is the second school in Swindon to be awarded Eco School status, came from the EcoClub who carried out a lunch box survey in February to find out how much packaging comes into school. Youngsters at Shaw Ridge Primary School put on two rousing performances of the Von Trapp Family Singers before Easter, a musical written by teachers Naomi Sly and Stephanie Godwin loosely based on The Sound of Music. Headteacher Sally Cowell said the show came at the end of a creative curriculum topic which started several weeks before with an evacuation to STEAM to discover the experiences of children in World War II. “The children worked really hard thoughout the term and the parents loved the performances. “It was also a celebration of how well the school has come together after we welcomed children from Salt Way Primary last September. Shaw Ridge build at the starting gate Building is to start in the summer on the new Shaw Ridge Primary School after planning permission was granted for the innovative design of a semi-circular building by Swindon Borough Architect Nic Newland in conjunction with Eric Cole & Partners. The site has already been investigated for archaeological remains, and an ecology survey of mammals and other species was carried out in April. Great Crested Newts have been found in the area and steps to comply with European legislation on trapping and removal are being taken so that building work can commence. Completion should take place in the Autumn of 2008. Fifteen youngsters were selected to work with graphic designer Kate Parsons from Old Town who has been commissioned by the school governors to come up with the school logo. She discussed with them how logos are used to convey a message and took them through the process which designers use to understand the needs of a client. They tried different colour alternatives and typefaces. At the last workshop the pupils presented their ideas to headteacher Ms Mattey, chair of governors Helen Miah and Kate Par-

sons. Ms Mattey said she was impressed by their work. “They concentrated hard and developed their ideas to come up with some interesting designs. The children were aware from the beginning that a design would not be selected at the end, but their ideas would contribute to Kate’s thinking.” Kate will present her development ideas to the governors in May and a final design should be agreed by the end of June ready to be embroidered on the school uniform which will be a gold shirt, black sweatshirt, and black trousers or skirt.

Piano lessons hit the right note The therapeutic effect of learning a musical instrument is attracting adult learners to start lessons again, says piano teacher, Julie Little. And she has been amazed at the tremendous response to her adverts in The Link, with the phone ringing every day with new enquiries. Julie, who specialises in motivating beginners of all ages, enjoys teaching adults because they are so keen to learn. In the most recent Associated Boards of the Royal School of Music exams, three of her students were successful at Grade 1, including Brian Timbrell, aged 66. “Parents who always wanted to play are now grabbing the opportunity; they’re the best pupils you can have,” she said. “It’s a good way to relax. Some young mums are taking time out to practice or have a lesson while the children are at nursery.” Teacher needed. The lifestyle event gave youngsters the chance to make their own healthy lunch, under the guidance of Sainsbury’s food advisor, Pat McDonald. They worked up an appetite with two jiggle and wiggle dance workshops from Dance Zone. There were also healthy Easter crafts and parachute games. Children and parents joined in all the activities and were encouraged to try something new which included pitta bread, strawberries, bread sticks, humus, peppers, wraps and raspberries. Mum Nicola Bond said six year old Ikaia had loved the raspberries, pitta bread and humus on offer. “I was surprised that he was so keen on these new foods; he ate a whole plate. We’ll be looking out for these items to have at home.” Centre manager, Julie Batson said, “this has been a brilliant event and everybody involved had a really good time. We’re planning similar events over the coming months; as a Children’s Centre we aim to support healthy living and an active life style along with family fun.”

A tribute to The King King George V emerged from the famous A shop construction shed as a wonder of the engineering world, an 89 ton monster pulling a 46 ton tender, to be followed by another 29 in the King Class. Designed by the team led by GWR chief engineer CB Collet, the flagship of the Great Western Railway made its inaugural run from Paddington to Plymouth on 1 July 1927, but was so heavy that it could not continue over Brunel’s bridge at Saltash to the end of the line at Penzance. Later that year KG5 was shipped to the USA to represent the best of British engineering at the Baltimore & Ohio railroad centenary celebrations. The gleaming brass bell on the front of the King, now beautifully preserved at the Steam Museum,

was presented to the GWR at the celebration events. Roy was the unofficial works photographer and has a vast collection of negatives and slides. He said, “King George V is a beautiful

engine, which shows off the best of Swindon’s design and engineering skills. The exhibition is my tribute to the people who built it.” Roy, also 80 in May, will display 80 fascinating black and white images depicting the life of the King George at West Swindon Library from 22 May to 2 June.

The Sarsen Trail and Neolothic Marathon, organised by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, takes place on Sunday 6 May. Competitors walk or run the 26 mile route or, for those who don’t want to complete a marathon, there are shorter routes of 11 and 15 miles. Over 2,000 people took part last year, raising more than £60,000 for the trust’s work protecting Wiltshire’s wildlife and environment. Dogs often accompany owners in the sponsored walk, but this is the first time that a separate race has been open to people running with their four legged friends. There has been considerable interest in the Wiltshire event with two races; over 4 or 14 miles said Richard Cook, Founder of Cani-X UK. “The attraction of the Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon is that it is traffic free and it offers a good cross-country run. Keep the air ambulance up Richard Hammond’s high profile air lift to hospital brought attention to the life saving Air Ambulance Service which relies heavily on public funding. A challenging sponsored walk is being organised round seven of the county’s white horses on 9 and 10 June to keep the helicopter and its crew ready for its life saving work. Teams will walk round the 55 mile course over the two days though there are options to walk for one day or even complete the course as a relay team. On Sunday 10 June there will be a seven mile Sunday Stroll across 7 miles of breathtaking Wiltshire countryside from Cherhill to Devizes. The organisers are also keen to hear from people who would like to complete the course by bike, horse or any other means. Each year, the Air Ambulance needs to raise around £350,000 to keep airborne. Forbes Robertson, Samantha Baker and Richard Stacey all joined the centre in the last few months. Forbes is a very experienced housing law adviser, Sam is a debt specialist and Richard is a skilled benefits advisor. They join Richard Hazell, Sylvie Leavey and Cathy Wells in providing free, friendly and confidential advice in housing law, welfare benefits and debt. Between them, the staff have over 50 years experience in providing assistance in these areas. The centre deals with the wide range of benefits such as Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, Job Seekers Allowance, and Disability Living Allowance to name but a few. It also assists with appeals against under and over payments and sometimes, representation at tribunals and court hearings. Help on housing issues for council and private tenants is also available. Problems with housing associations, housing benefit queries and claims, issues with landlords regarding quality of accommodation especially for special needs clients, mortgage arrears and repossession are all dealt with at the centre. It also offers advice to clients on all aspects of personal debt includ-

ing council tax arrears, bankruptcy and dealing with bailiffs. The Wiltshire Law Centre was established in September 1981 to provide its services to people in Swindon and Wiltshire. In 2006 it celebrated its 25th anniversary. The opening hours are MondayFriday 9am to 4pm. It offers appointments and a drop-in service, time permitting. They can also make home appointments with people who for whatever reason are unable to come to them. The offices are based at the bottom end of Commercial Road in Temple House, near to the Registry Office. The centre, which is funded by the Legal Services Commission and Swindon Borough Council, is very pleased to announce that it has just been awarded another year of funding from both sources in recognition of the need for quality, free legal advice in the town.

Thirty youngsters meet on Wednesday 6pm to 8.30pm with youth worker Huw Solly and, once permissions have been secured, a Friday evening movies and munchies club will be launched. A Tuesday Adventure Service Challenge group for 10 to 13 year olds started on 24 April. Join at anytime but there is a limit on numbers taking part. Youngsters will have to commit at least three months’ involvement to mini-Duke of Edinburgh projects such as road craft, cookery, pursuing an interest, community service, camp craft, rambling and first aid.
