I look forward to reporting on our progress in the coming months and years.

Six ways to cast one vote

Swindon is again leading the way in giving people choice in the way they cast their vote in the local elections this year - via the web, or interactive TV, by telephone, through one of eight iPlus Kiosks in the town, by post, or at a polling station. Remote electronic voting, and by post, takes place from 24 April, 6am, to 30 April. On 1 May, those who want to vote in the traditional way by putting a cross on a piece of paper can do so at a polling station. Polling cards providing the details of how to vote will be delivered to every address.

From the Great Wall to the Inca trail

A woman from Freshbrook has accepted another challenge to raise much-needed money for the National Deaf Children's Society. Last May Carole Woodcock raised £2,000 by walking the Great Wall of China with 59 others who together raised over £80,000 for the NDCS. On 7 June she's off to Peru for a week's trek along the Inca Trail. Her fundraising target this time is £2,500. Carole works full time at BCA and contributes all her wages from a part-time job at Sainsbury's. _ "The trek last year was enormously challenging, but great fun. I have some hearing loss myself and feel that the NDCS is a worthwhile cause to support." To sponsor Carole on her Peru adventure, call her on 567619.

People here now have far more control over their lives and are able to make choices for themselves. This time last year The Link published a photo of staff at the DeVere Hotel at Shaw Ridge Leisure Park welcoming Koalas special needs playgroup as their charity of the year. Twelve months on, Koalas are £1,590 better off thanks to a variety of fund raising events throughout the year. The conference and banqueting department also managed to persuade guests during the year to contribute to the fund. Koalas coordinator Stephanie Hathaway said she was delighted with the contribution. "We rely on the Swindon community to keep our organisation going and the support of DeVere staff is wonderful." Next year's fundraising will be directed to Swindon based children's cancer charity CALM.

Older people return to school for a day

Westlea School had the largest turnout ever to its annual grandparents day on 4 April with dozens of older people being shown round school by eager children, sitting in class, enjoying performances, and having cups of tea as a welcome break from the hectic activity.

Wonderful words for the 10th year Passionate punter and erudite wordsmith Judith Cranswick tries to decide who to see at the Swindon Festival of Literature. 1 - 17 May This year's Swindon Festival of Literature - the tenth - is already posing problems for me. How am I going to make time to fit in everything I want to see? On day one, 1 May. it's true you won't find me up in time for the Dawn Chorus at Lawn Woods but I' m an Archers Addict so I've got to hear the 'Inside Story' at the Arts Centre at 1 pm and the chance to see Magnus Magnusson in the evening is an opportunity I can't pass up. Not that his is the only household name with agony aunt Claire Rayner and Edwina Currie on the 6th for major company, poet Andrew Motion on the 8th. Royal watcher Jennie Bond on thel Oth. Kate Adie for FOOC afficianados on the 12th, Libby Purves from the airwaves and Private Eye investor Richard Ingrams on the 15th to mention but a few. Booker prize winner, Ben Okri, will be part of International Evening and another must for me is Gervase Phinn whose radio stories of life as a schools' inspector are unmissable. To have two of my favourite novelists - Robert Goddard and Nicci Gerrard, half of the husband and

A free exhibition in the Harlequin Bar at the Wyvern Theatre from 29 April until 23 May by West Swindon digital photographer Tony Leggett gives the town a whole new perspective. His current interest is to create panoramic pictures from a number of consecutive images which are stitched together using a computer. Great artists on show at Greendown Work by over 500 West Swindon primary school children will be displayed in an art exhibition at Greendown School in Grange Park on 30 April and 1 May from 5pm to 7pm. In an innovative project to smooth the transition between primary and secondary school, the children who are moving up to Greendown. created large panels in the style of great artists with the help of independent artists No Added Sugar. Greendown primary liaison teacher Angie Procter said. "the project is one of several initiatives to integrate the work of Greendown with its partner primary schools to make a seemless move between school phases. The exhibition gives parents and friends a chance to visit the school informally." Each school group painted two pictures, one to hang in their primary school, the other to be displayed at Greendown.

The Old Town Festival is getting ready to hit the streets and parks, from 30 June to 6 July.

Alan Ayckbourn's exploration of the buried secrets held by members of a successful family and the spectre they hold on the future, in his play Time of My Life are revealed by West Swindon's Junction 16 Theatre Group at Purton Village Hall on 16 and 17 May, 7.30pm. Since Joseph H Pilates first established the technique early in the last centurypilates has taken many different routes. It is still renowned in the dance world for helping to shape and limber up dancers, and is now used by many top athletes: tennis players, golfers, runners and swimmers. More recently physiotherapists. chiropractors, osteopaths and doctors have been advising that pilates can help with rehabilitation from injury and back pain. One of the main reasons for this is that pilates teaches the user how to move different parts of the body in isolation and how to mobilise and move the spine in different sections. This is something we rarely do in our daily lives. Pilates is a slow and rhythmical exercise that can help you feel centred and s^ + relaxed. It improves posture, balance and muscle tone. whilst increasing the strength of deep abdominal and lower back muscles. Pregnant women also benefit as pilates teaches proper breathing and body alignment. It helps to strengthen core muscles that are vital for back suppo rt during the months of pregnancy and thus helping to recover body shape and tone after birth. Dawn Cole has been teaching pilates in Swindon for nearly two years and was tr ained by the Michael King Pilates Institute in London after taking a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science. Home Library is already well established at twelve libraries across Swindon and provides a free delivery service to some 140 users. It's available to anybody with a long-term disability, which prevents them getting to a library, or if they would find it difficult to carry books home. Home Library coordinator Debs Osorio said there is no age barrier if there is a need. "We can visit able bodied people who have been in hospital and are recuperating, or are at home with a longer term illness. Others who should not lift if they can help it can also be helped, for example a new mum who has had a caesarian birth." She also pointed out that adults don't have to borrow adult books. I have seen signs of otters in the urban area, found ponds teeming i with Great Crested Newts and ^ watched a hen harrier sweep by - all in Swindon, here on our doorsteps. On 10 May a coalition of groups will come together for a conference entitled A Vision for Wildlife and People to take us a step closer to the production of a Biodiversity Action Plan for Swindon. This will set out the wildlife value of the borough, detail the threats faced by our wildlife heritage and provide a clear set of actions that will enable us to protect, maintain and enhance our natural world, Imagine a world where the song thrush does not sing - is that really a world we want for our children? The majority of us will have memories of feeding the ducks surrounded on all sides by a cacophony of sight, sounds, and smells. That extraordinary experience that is so ordinary. The natural environment in

Youth service looks for part time workers and volunteers to boost service in West and North Lyndsey Poole, the new youth worker on West Swindon's mobile youth provision The Mobie is launching a new drop-in information session to encourage more young people to come and have a look around and to use the equipment carried on the bus. Starting on Wednesday afternoons from 28 May, the minibus will be parked from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on the basketball court in the Link Centre coach park (by the subway). New youth worker Dawn Carpenter is just about finding her feet in an area covering Haydon Wick, Abbey Meads, Groundwell West, Taw Hill and Priory Vale. She started on 3 February having moved from youth work in Gloucestershire to develop a new role in North Swindon which covers building based youth activities, street work where young people hang about, and working with groups of young people to create environments where they feel safe to meet, can develop skills and seek information and advice. She will be responsible for a cyber lt cafe youth m _Z club when it opens at the -s. North Swindon District Centre later in the year. "It's a challenge to develop youth work where there are a limited number of places to meet close to where young people are," said Dawn. "There's also a problem of finding what links young people together when they are dispersed across a wide area and attend a number of different schools." To develop the work with young people, Dawn is recruiting part time paid sessional youth workers and also volunteers who could offer skills such as IT, dance, sports, crafts. Thank you for publishing the article on Palestine in the April edition. This highlighted the plight of Palestinians who are killed or arrested and their refugee camps destroyed. These ordinary people are denied basic medical care and there are constant food and water shortages. These basic human rights are denied, yet we stand back and do nothing except throw a few UN resolutions in their direction and quietly make utterances of disbelief. This travesty can only be resolved by peaceful negotiations that would give justice to both the Palestinians and Israelis, not by using weapons andoppressivetac-

tics. It is time that we spoke out about these injustices and articles such as the one you published must be read and acted upon. I have no doubt that you will receive letters opposing your article from people who have closed their eyes and covered their ears to the pleas of the Palestinian people, accusing those of us who speak outasbeinganti-Semitic. The same people will refuse to believe that the atrocities are happening and that the Palestinian men, women and children are suffering episodes of rape, abuse, torture and ultimately ethnic cleansing.
