Plans by international airline booking company Galileo Systems to erect 6 chimneys at its Windmill Hifi computer back-up building were thrown out byThamesdown Council's planning committee at the beginning of April, after residents living closeby in Grange Park lobbied councillors to block the scheme. The planning application described the project as 'alteration to exhaust outlets from standby generators,' but residents discovered that the company intended to generate electricity for sale to the national grid at peak demand times. The residents have frequently complained about exhaust fumes from the Galileo buildings. They were concerned about a linkbetween diesel exhaust and cancer. Galileo have now announced that May. Week long word feast with a touch of music and mischief Stories, poems, talks, readings and talking fill Swindon's first ever festival of literature in May to celebrate the Swindon Chamber of Commerce centenary writes organiser Matt Holland The Link Centre Studio has been chosen as the most suitable venue for four major events that form part of Swindon's first Festival of Literature from 6 May to 14 May. To launch the Festival on 8 May there will be a cabaret jazz night with the Clark Tracey Sextet. On Tuesday 10 May 'the wayward poet that will make you gasp' Fiona Pitt-Kethley will be performing at the same venue with New Generation poet Sarah Maguire. The following night, Wednesday 11 May, sees ex-incredible String Band Robin Williamson with his

magical repertoire of stories and songs. And on Saturday 14 May there is an all day event called Children, Parents and Books which will appeal to the whole family. Authors willwork(and play!) withtheyoung and young at heart and the Festival will launch Swindon's own Federation of Children's Book Group. Also of interest will be events at the Town Hall. June Bradley reports The speaker we had booked for our March meeting was taken ill so Mr Alsworth stepped in to give us a talk with slides on Inland Waterways. How fortunate we were to get a speaker of such a high standard and with such a breadth of knowledge of his subject at such short notice. His enthusiasm was really infectious and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. At our meeting on 18 May we shall be discussing the resolutions which will be taken to the National Council. This years resolutions are 1. The donation of organs. 2. Legal representation for rape victims. 3. The obscene publications act. Many thanks to all those who sup-

One of the first Church of England women priests has just started a one year contract working with the West Swindon Ecumenical Team. Annis Fessey, pictured abuve, was born and lived her early years in Swindon. Trained as a teacher she moved away with her teacher husband Brian. They trained for the priesthood together and whilst Brian was ordained and is now vicar of Purton, Annis had to wait for the arguement about women priests to be resolved. She has a free ranging role which will include working in local primary schools in the Shaw area.

Hands on at Moredon Moredon Library has had a face-lift with the fitting of a new window and entrance doors. To mark the occasion the library is playing host to a fascinating exhibition called 'From arobats to androids', a collection of mechanical moving toys which will appeal to young and old alike.

In April the draw was made for the pirate treasure prize which has been running since NationalLibrary Week in November at libraries in North Swindon. Over 400 cubs and brownies have been competing to win a £500 set of World Book Encyclopedias, and the lucky winner was Jack Smith from Gorse Hill Library.

A night attending to patients Recent local media coverage about doctors night time on-call service gave the impression that all GPs will be giving up night time work. This is not the case at West Swindon's Ashington Way Surgery. Dr Jane Berry (pictured below) describes a night on-call. It's late evening freezing and snow- to a full working week. Ihad started ing. With recent report from the RSPCA saying that more and more animals are being mis-treated, the work of Thamesdown Animal Sanctuary is becoming ever more important. What do Park Rangers do? It's a question often asked of Steve Upton, Lydiard Park Senior Country Park Ranger

I thought I would take the opportunity this month to give a brief answer. There are 12 Country Park Rangers in Thamesdown, based at Lydiard and Coate Water. No two days are ever the same and we are busy every day of the year looking after the parks and our visitors. AtLydiard we manage the barbecues, Youth Hostel and play area and assist all groups wishing to use the Park for their events. These range from the large shows and wedding receptions to sponsored walks. We also offer assistance to schools, community groups and local businesses using our orienteering courses. The Rangers do a great deal of work with schools, leading activities and offering advice to teachers in planning visits to the Park. We also visit schools to give talks and presentations and assist with national curriculum project work. Many of the voluntary community conservation groups in Thamesdown receive support from the Ranger Service and youth organisations wishing to carry out environmental work ask for our assistance. Regular patrols of the parks are

made to check for damage and ensure the safety of our visitors. Repairs and maintenance of all facilities are our responsibility. The Parks and Countryside Events programme is a way many people come into contact with the Rangers, on guided walks and childrens activities. In addition to this, we are often to be found giving talks and slide shows to community groups. Our summer events programme will be available soon. Outside the parks, Rangers are involved in helping to maintain and improve the Rights of Way network, in partnership with the Community Forest Team. The Rangers provide an information service to all users of the parks and to students doing project work. Assistance to visitors with any difficulties they may have, from giving first aid to helping locate lost children are all part of our role. The rangers operate theEasiriders to give disabled visitors access to the park. In short the Ranger Service exists to help everyone enjoy the country parks, and to look after the parks and their facilities. The Friends of Lydiard Tregoze

The Friends of Lydiard Tregoze is a large and thriving society setup in 1967 with the aim of fostering an interest in Lydiard Park and the Church of St Mary where, for over five centuries, members of the St John family lived and worshipped respectively. It also fosters an interest in the village and Parish of Lydiard Tregoze and all those who lived and worked there through the centuries. The society welcomes new members from West Swindon, an area rich in history, where many of the new street names are derived from the StJohn family and the land which made up their once large estate. North Swindon residents are also made very welcome. The society holds its annual general meeting on Saturday 7 May at 2pm. There will bea talk byaguest speakerfollowed by tea inthe House and Evensong in the Church. The society produces an annual report with many interesting articles. It is hoped that a series of talks will commence in the autumn. Members may visit the House free of charge and are invited to exhibition previews and functions. Westlea I wonder just how many people in West Swindon have been affected by the Government policy requiring them to re-register with their

NI-IS dentist if they wish to remain as a NT-IS patient. If a patient has not seen their NHS dentist for two years they are required to re-register. Before one can do this a dental check-up is required, currently costing the patient £3.80. One might argue that that is a small price to pay if treatment is needed but to have to pay any amount of money to be told that one's teeth are OK seems ludicrous. Isn't this just a crafty way of the Government extorting money from NHS patients? I have every sympathy with the dentist who still wishes to treat NHS patients. The cost to him and his practice of re-registering NHS patients, in terms of time and administration, must hardly make it cost effective. I am nevertheless very glad that there are still some dentists who believe enough in the NHS to remain with it for the sake of their patients. Itis a pity that this Government aren't as conscientious.

LocalLives Getting about in Nepal Concluding West Swindon based Health Visitor Janet Asherson's account of her two years in Nepal with Voluntary Services Overseas One of the real pleasures and privileges of workingwith VSO has been the chance of visiting parts of the world most people only dream of. I was determined to travel and working on a nursing campus provided me with a generous 10 weeks holiday a year. I've had some noteworthy highlights: watching the elaborate rituals of Bhuddist funeral; a Hindi cremation and scatteringof ashes in the holy Bagmati River; staying in a basic wood-built lodge, nestled on the hillside, drinking a pot of tumba, the local brew, and watching the sun set; coming unexpectedly close to a rhino; walking the tea plantations of Darjeeling and the mountain pathways to Taplejung. They've all been wondrous experiences. But the price to pay is coping with local modes of transport. Howl often yearned for my little blue Fiesta with those padded seats. Travelling anywhere in Nepal is arduous. There are two roads, 83% of the land mass is mountainous, so walking is often the only option. Walks are not akin to the stroll to the local shop. They go on for days. As

Of course, journey time is reduced where possible, by taking the bus. Now riding atop buses is illegal here, so to avoid repercussions, 100 yards before reaching police checkposts, everyone starts their descent. There's a struggle to secure footholds and gain entry by deftly sliding inside. On average a bus seats 46 and stands another 50. Buses are also a means for carrying cargo and it's normal to share yourspace witha chicken,goat, sack of corn, sugarora spare engine part. Night bus journeys add further hazards. Headlights aren't routinely used. Instead, the horn is sounded about every 10 seconds to notify oncoming traffic of the other's presence. When a second horn is heard, the headlights and the right indicator are simultaneously turned on to show where the buses are in relation to the road edge or each other. I've yet to be involved in a nasty accident, but there have been some phenomenal adrenalin rushes It's no surprise that in every bus station there's a religious man, who for a token rupee, will confer a blessing for your safe journey. In a country where back up systems such as highway codes, rescue services and MOT's are barely understood, let alone practised, a profound faith in God and an act of worship is often the major contribution to a successful journey.
