Swindon 105.5 relocate to Liden Library and celebrate eighth anniversary Swindon 105.5 community radio will be formally opening their new studios in Liden Library on Tuesday 15 March at midday – eight years to the day since the station was started. Swindon 105.5 was launched at The County Ground in 2008 by Town Crier Fred Feris, with the inaugural show presented by Shirley Ludford and former broadcasting colleague from BBC Radio Swindon Peter Heaton-Jones. The station was moved to larger premises at the Bentley Centre in 2010, which allowed for three studios and spaces to run tuition courses in radio presenting, engineering and other associated media. These courses, along with regular fundraising have been the station’s primary sources of income alongside various grants, with staff and presenters made up almost entirely of volunteers. Shirley Ludford, who has run the studio on a part-time wage since its inception, said: “I believe that the town’s Community Radio Station settling in to the building shared with Liden Library is a form of template for other libraries to gain relevant support - and to help keep

them alive and busy facilities. “We now have a 5-year initial lease which means we can make plans and not worry every six months about whether we will need to look for a new home. “We feel much more a part of the community here and have received a very good response from the public at large. “Thamesdown Buses have labelled two bus stops with the station’s name and are carrying an announcement I recorded for

The Squirrel statue, previously stored at Goodearl Leisure Garden site has now been erected alongside the pedestrian entrance to Haydon Wick Parish Council offices in Thames Avenue. The statue was carved from a tree which originally grew in Trent Road field and when the tree died due to damage in the 1970s, the trunk was sculpted into a squirrel as part of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002.

The statue unfortunately suffered from rot along its base, meaning that some of the original inscription and wording has been lost. Parish councillor Richard Hailstone said: “We felt it a shame to allow the statue to be left rotting. We wanted to make this sculpture visible again and what better place for it than outside our offices for all of our parishoners to enjoy.”

Uncertain future for Swindon’s libraries as they face 60% cuts It has been described by council chiefs as only ‘the start of the conversation’ but already the dreaded word ‘closure’ is being whispered across the town. Rumour and uncertainty is rife but what is certain is that Swindon’s library budget will be cut by 58% over the next four years. And there will be heavy job losses amongst the current 70 employees of the Library Service. At its February meeting Swindon’s cabinet agreed to launch a six month consultation on how £1.5 million of cuts to the borough’s library budget will be made by 2020. The current budget is £2.6 million per year. With a very real axe hovering above the services, the people of Swindon are now being asked to come forward with ideas on how these savings can be made. A cut of £300,000 has already been allocated for 2016/17 from the libraries budget but it has not been decided at this stage where those savings will be made. Councillor Garry Perkins, the cabinet member for libraries, said: “No decisions have been made yet. We want to look at all the different ways that libraries can be used to

become sustainable for the future. This could come in the form of building sharing, volunteer groups or even working out how to make them commercial assets by bringing in new income streams.” Over the past few months a needs assessment has been carried out looking into how each library is run. The council is putting forward an initial proposal for a core service provided at the Central Library as the vast majority of residents, 94%, live within four miles with the rest living within nine miles. This could be enhanced by a reduced level of targeted services and support to areas with the highest level of need. The council will also be talking with local people to develop alternative approaches and ideas. Community groups will be encouraged to develop Local Community Service Points for library and other community services. The council will also work with six pilot areas and other areas where interest develops in order to develop the new strategy. Library provision is one of the services which local authorities have to provide as part of their statutory obligations.

Link Comment: The final chapter? They say that the pen is mightier than the sword but in this instance as Swindon’s libraries face unprecedented cuts - the sword of austerity is proving to be a lot mightier than the pen. For a child, and for a huge proportion of adults, a book can be many things - a magical object that transports you to another world; a source of great knowledge; or even a friend that enfolds you in its comforting pages. Books can change the world or at least let you know a bit more about how the world works. We should not underestimate the power of the written word and its importance in our modern society. With the council proposing nearly 60% cuts to the library budget, however much we try to cushion the blow by boxing clever with space and the use of volunteers, the library service will definitely be worse off. We’re now ‘starting the conversation’ to see exactly how the axe will fall. But the most dangerous aspect of all of this is the possible impact on the future of Swindon. Libraries are a lifeline to huge swathes of the community helping with social mobility not just with

literacy levels but also with their role as an IT centre - enabling those from deprived areas a means of accessing services they would not be able to reach otherwise. At the same time we are also seeing the council offloading its heritage assets like Lydiard, with the process for Steam, Coate and other parks to follow swiftly after. It’s hard to blame Swindon Council when you consider the bigger picture. Every local authority in the country is being forced to fall into line with less and less money coming from Central Government. It’s a national problem as chancellor George Osborne continues to bang the austerity drum dragging our society backwards with it as we lose more and more services. But short of changing the ‘austerity narrative’ and swapping it for a lot more rosy ‘stimulus narrative’, all we can do in Swindon is our best. We can do this through good ideas and putting ourselves forward to make sure that the damage done to our libraries and other services is minimised as much as possible. As there are some things, like books, that are important.

Council tax set to rise this year Council tax is set to rise by 4 per cent from April - the biggest increase in five years. Swindon Council has opted to take the maximum 2% allocation as well as a further 2% increase allowed by Government to help local authorities pay for adult social care. Band D properties, those on the mid-range, will see an increase of £50 from April 1 as part of the Swindon Council precept.

At the same time the policing part of the bill will go up by £3.12 per year for the average Band D property, which represents an increase of 1.9 per cent. The Shadow Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority approved a budget of £54.815 million to run the new Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2016-17. This means that all Band D properties in Swindon and Wiltshire will pay £69.21 per year from 1 April.

The future of Lydiard up for debate Set within serene landscaped gardens, the palladian house at Lydiard sits dearly in the heart of many of Swindon’s residents. So it is easy to understand why the people of the town are fearful for its future with Swindon Council’s cabinet having put the running of the site out to tender in early February. But it has also been revealed that there is heavy subsidence to the south tower and other structural needs which could come at a huge cost for whoever takes it over. On 15 February, Swindon Link hosted a public debate at its offices at Arclite House in Peatmoor to discuss the future of the site - a week after the cabinet decision. The meeting was chaired by Swindon Link group editor Jamie Hill with a panel made up of Garry Perkins, cabinet member for culture, Jim Robbins, shadow Labour culture spokesperson and Mike Bowden, the chair of Friends of Lydiard Park - a group set up 54 years ago to safeguard the site’s heritage and who are spearheading a community charitable trust bid. At the meeting Mr Bowden said: “We have had an architect look over the main house and over the

past two years the south tower has been subsiding causing serious structural damage that could cost a fortune to put right. I would like to know if this is something that the council is aware of.” Cllr Perkins said: “Obviously we’ll be carrying out a full survey of the site as part of the process and anything like that will come out as part of that. As it is we will be giving the winning bidder a reverse premium of £860,000 to take care of any work that needs doing “I do need to emphasise that Swindon Council will still own the site and it will still belong to the people of Swindon. “I cannot say what the length of the leasehold will be as that will form part of the negotiations.” It was revealed at the meeting that only two out of the nine expressions of interest were for running the whole site and they were Twigmarket, who run Broome Manor, and the aforementioned charitable trust bid. The other bidders were for parts of the site like the conference centre, catering facilities and car parking. “It is still very early days and now that the formal process has started there could definitely end up being

more bidders,” added Cllr Perkins. Organisations have from now until May to put in a bid with the council due to decide in June and the running of the park to be taken over in September. Cllr Robbins said: “Lydiard Park is owned by the people of Swindon and its running should stay in the hands of the council. Central Government has just announced £1.6 million of transitional funding for Swindon. We would back down from this whole process and other services that are up for cuts and use that money to find different solutions.” Swindon Council is also planning to introduce parking charges at Lydiard and Coate Water over the summer.

4G masts rejected at council planning committee The planning committee held at Swindon Civic Offices on 9 February voted to refuse five 4G masts for prior approval, dealing a blow to Swindon Borough Council’s plans to bring superfast wireless broadband coverage to the borough. The 4G LTE network has provided benefits for rural residents but in North Swindon people are adamant the service is nullifying interest from other companies such as Virgin and their fibre broadband options, and made their grievances known at the Planning Committee meeting. Planning officers recommended that masts in Aiken Road, Taw Hill; Cassini Drive, Oakhurst and Redhouse Way be given prior approval, but recommended that the same type of masts be rejected at Eastbury Way, Redhouse and Polonez Court, Haydon End but they were all refused. The meeting opened with a presentation from Conservative Councillor Mary Martin, Cabinet Member for Corporate, Customer and Digital Services, which was met with outcries from opposition

groups. The meeting was informed that interest remains from Virgin Media and that BT Openreach were starting a trial in Oakhurst of their latest Fibre To The Premises technology. Cllr Vera Tomlinson also read a statement on behalf of North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson which explained his opposition to the 4G scheme in its entirety, which can be read on our website: www.swindonlink.com Repeatedly the committee was informed that the masts go against several elements of Swindon Borough Council’s Local Plan and the placement of the masts was consistently challenged, with points along Thamesdown Drive being suggested by Cllr Elliott stating that UKB Networks ‘had not properly considered Thamesdown Drive with a six mast plan’, a statement refuted by their representative Graham Currier. Harriet Maltby, a Priory Vale resident and member of the anti4G community group spoke during the meeting and said afterwards: “This is a significant win for the community. We hope UKB Networks

These five proposed locations were clearly inappropriate, and I am glad the committee listened to the local people. “My door is always open to UKB Networks to discuss alternatives.” Reflecting on the planning committee decision, Cllr Martin said: “I am personally disappointed that the committee did not go with the officers’ recommendations. UKB Networks will now have to go away and consider alternative mast sites. “With the mixture of speakers, we were always going to get leakage of personal views into the meeting regarding the 4G scheme.”

UKB Networks have issued the following statement: “We are disappointed that the planning committee feels the way it does about the provision of superfast broadband in North Swindon. “We are pleased that the rest of the borough is more receptive and we are really encouraged by the numerous messages of support we have had. We remain committed to North Swindon and will be talking with ward councillors and residents in the coming weeks to find an amicable solution to this issue.” Cllr Elliot later took to Twitter to state that: “UKB have made a factually and legally incorrect statement. Planning committee voted on the mast locations not the scheme.”

Syria sadness for Swindon nurse who worked there

The daily news report of the intense conflict across Syria has been causing paediatric intensive care nurse Bev Cejer, from Grange Park, a great deal of distress as she thinks about the people she met there. She was part of a small team of specialist medical and nursing staff from Bristol Children’s Hospital who spent a week in May 2009 in the city of Homs, performing heart operations on children unable to travel to the country’s only children’s cardiac surgeon in the capital Damascus. They returned to the Al-Bir hospital in 2010, but the beginnings of the civil war made further visits too dangerous. The ever increasing violence over the last five years has seen the Syrian regime, recently

backed by the Russian air force, batter opposition organisations, with a range of terror groups fighting each other for dominance. The result has been half of the country’s population displaced, seeking refuge in neighbouring countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, and escaping to Europe. In February this year hospitals and schools were targeted by aircraft. Plans for new Swindon Robins stadium finally revealed

Following the submittal of a final planning application, details have been revealed for a new greyhound and speedway stadium in North Swindon. Sports fans were told in April last year that they would only have to wait weeks before documents were being submitted to the council before several obstacles arose in the process. With the planning application now received, details have been released for a sports facility and training centre, allowing for lessons on animal welfare, husbandry and motorcycle mechanics. The Abbey Stadium has been host to a variety of sporting events for 70 years, but the current plans for renovation would mean a new stadium is erected in the current car park. It will be a state of the art structure built to optimise television coverage. The documents attached to the revealed planning application state: ‘The new stadium model will deliver a high quality two-storey building with a new market hall at ground floor level, which will also include some catering and beverage facilities that can be used by both

market and race visitors. ‘The main racing facility will be located at first level overlooking the greyhound and speedway tracks. It will incorporate restaurant, lounge and café bar style units. ‘The first floor design will be sufficiently flexible so as to provide meeting and conference spaces, available for private hire and for the use of local community groups.’ To continue a regular source of income for the stadium, markets will still be held within the main building. The new stadium was originally slated for completion in the summer of 2009. At the time, Justin Tomlinson – then the Swindon borough councillor for Abbey Meads – said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news. I have been leading on this campaign from the beginning.” Originally the site next to the stadium at St Andrew’s Ridge had been designated for light industrial and employment development. However central government agreed to a change of use to the Swindon local plan to permit 450 houses to be built in order to finance the stadium.

Community News First Hearing Dogs partnership in Purton Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf adults and children to important sounds and danger signals, providing independence, confidence and companionship. Hearing dogs also help to relieve the stress, isolation and loneliness that deafness can often bring. In total it costs £40,000 for the breeding, training and lifelong care of each hearing dog for the expected 10 years of its working life, for which the charity relies on fundraising. Linda Buckland of Purton was recently partnered with her hearing dog Fidgey.

Linda said: “I have been deaf since childhood and always struggle to hear properly. I’ve always been rather shy, quiet and not so confident. “All that changed the moment Fidgey arrived on our doorstep. MP strikes lucky for Down’s Group

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson calculated the odds before Christmas and won £262.50 to help sustain Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group’s WorkFit programme. It was the first time in five years that he had won the William Hill charity challenge when he managed to turn a free £50 bet into profit. In December, Justin came good with a 4.25 to 1 bet that Manchester United would be beaten by Bournemouth and his home team Blackburn Rovers would win against Rotherham. Justin, who is well known as an ardent football supporter as well the Minister for the Disabled, admitted his skill at the bookies was not up to much. “My annual performance at William Hill hasn’t been great but this year I’m really glad to be able to help Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group who do fantastic work to help youngsters born with Down’s achieve their potential. “Importantly, they bring parents together to share opportunities and challenges and do so much for youngsters who need more help with speech and language therapy. “It’s entirely run by parents who are constantly fundraising to support learning opportunities and

fun activities for the members. Group treasurer Lesley Pierce said the donation would be used to support WorkFit. “Justin is very committed to Swindon Down’s Group and was really keen to know more about our programme which helps adults with Down’s syndrome into work-related activities, which could be paid jobs, volunteering roles, work experience and traineeships and also supports employers to understand the needs of people with Down’s and to provide them with the right opportunities to thrive. “The cheque handover took place a couple of days before our first WorkFit Liaison Officer started training to make the programme happen.” The cheque was presented at Sainsbury’s Bridgemead where Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group was the 2015 charity of the year. In 2010 the group received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for charities. Tony Ackerman of William Hill said: “We’re delighted that Justin, after years of trying, has managed to pick a winner for such a fantastic cause."

Hills Waste launches food waste recycling service A new food waste collection and recycling service has been introduced by Swindon-based Hills Waste Solutions across the county. The service is available to all businesses not just those involved in food production and hospitality, as any factories, shops and offices generating food waste can benefit. Gary McKinnon, divisional director at Hills, said: By recycling food waste businesses reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, saving expensive landfill tax costs,

and instead their waste becomes a resource that is recycled using anaerobic digestion to generate energy for the National Grid.” Businesses that sign-up to the new service are provided with a purpose built 120 litre or 240 litre capacity container and biodegradable liners. A fond farewell to Wroughton’s Ridgeway School head Steven Colledge Ridgeway School in Wroughton will say goodbye to Steven Colledge – who leaves on 24 March. He has been the headteacher since 2006 but for the past two years, the day to day running of the school has been in the hands of principal James Povoas, who will take on the official headteacher role. Since 2014 Mr Colledge had taken on the role of an executive head teacher overseeing three different secondary schools, including Ridgeway, as part of the White Horse Federation. His official title is secondary director. He said: “I suppose I better stress that my decision to go has been led by the Government changes to teacher pensions which would have meant that it would have not been in my interest to stay on. “It’s meant that I am leaving about 18 months sooner than I would have liked. This has happened so quickly that I haven’t really thought about how my life will be different afterwards. It will definitely be a wrench not driving to Ridgeway in the morning. It will be sad not to the see all the children and staff who make every

day so enjoyable.” Ridgeway School has 1,250 students aged 11 to 18 from across the Swindon area. “It’s such a wonderful school,” added Mr Colledge. “During my time here I have seen so much happen. I like to think that children leave Ridgeway well equipped for life and that they are personable, confident and articulate – the type of person you would like to sit next to on a train. “I am so proud of all of the achievements we’ve had here, from academic and sporting successes to simply helping a student who wasn’t doing so well achieve their full potential. “It’s hard to think of specific achievements as there’s been so many. One that immediately comes to mind was the Christmas Showcase in December. It was not long after I had made my decision to leave and I was watching this show with 150 students taking part and just thinking to myself how amazing it all was. “As a school we also do so much out in the community in Wroughton taking part in the carnival and our regular ‘Come

I’m definitely going to miss it all.” Mr Colledge, who will be working as an Ofsted inspector after he leaves, came to Ridgeway after being head of the Grange School in Gloucester. As part of his remit for the White Horse Federation he has also been the executive head at Gloucester Academy helping it get out of special measures. He originally started out as a history teacher and remembers standing in a playground at the age of 14, in the Midlands where he grew up and making the decision that he wanted to be an educator. As time went on, Mr Colledge

moved on from teaching history to teaching IT. “When I first started, teaching was made up of a blackboard and chalk and then it moved onto whiteboards and eventually BBC computers,” he said. “Nowadays everything is computerised and it’s a bit of a financial strain on any school. At Ridgeway we have 650 computers. It has changed everything as far as education is concerned and we’ve all had to change with it. “I have been very lucky at Ridgeway to work with such great staff with such great children and it will be a sad day when I eventually go.” www.ridgewayschool.com

New York prize beckons for Isambard students stock market hopefuls

Despite turbulent times in the world’s stock markets, two teams of four students from Isambard Community School outperformed the markets and secured places in the semi-finals of a national investment competition run by the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Competing against 10,000 other teams from across the UK, the two groups of stock pickers made a virtual £11,000 and £9,000 respectively in a three month period of online trading, starting with an investment portfolio of £100,000. The top 500 performing teams in the semi-final phase of the challenge, which runs to 18 March, will be tested by gaining points for

accurately predicting the weekly closing price of certain assets. Teams with the highest points total will make it through to the national final in April where an all-expenses paid educational trip to New York and £2,000 awaits the eventual winners. Isambard GCSE Business Studies teacher Kathy Balebela said: “This is our first year taking part in the challenge. It’s great to see students demonstrating what they are capable of. It’s a great example for all our students working hard to understand a whole new area of finance which is paying dividends in learning and the satisfaction of gaining virtual profits.”

Primary kids get the chance to cook at Isambard With the national curriculum being changed to give children the chance to learn how to cook - like they did in the past - youngsters at Red Oaks Primary School have enjoyed the opportunity to use the food technology classrooms at Isambard Community School next door. During the Spring term youngsters from Years 4 and 5 have taken practical lessons, half a class at a time, delivered by Isambard food technology teacher Emma Pegg. She said: “Some children won’t have had any experience of cooking at

home whilst others will have had quite a lot. “Since September the national curriculum requires children to know how to cook a main meal, and Ofsted is also concerned how schools deliver aspects of health and well being through diet and food preparation. “The children have been learning how to be safe in the kitchen with knives for example, to organise and chop up ingredients and prepare the dish so that they can take it home and share with their family. So far

we’ve made shepherds pie and vegetable curry. Of course, they’re not allowed to leave without washing up and leaving the kitchen spotless. It’s all about skills for life. “I must admit I was a bit scared of teaching primary children; I can deal with teenagers anyday. But it’s been really enjoyable working with younger children.”

It’s obvious that the Red Oaks youngsters had a good time learning good kitchen practice. Holly said: “I help my mum and dad with cooking but I’d like to do more.” Mya added: “I’m going to push my mum to let me get more involved in preparing meals. It was really fun to be taught how to cook at school.”

Tadpole Farm Church of England Academy has been settling in as a solid community school since it moved to Tadpole Garden Village in September, following a year’s temporary residence at Redhouse Community Centre. Seven months on and the school is full in reception with 60 children, full in nursery with 52 children and 49 out of 60 places filled in Year 1. Headteacher Jayne Leo said: “It’s been extremely lively since before we opened at Redhouse in 2014; hard work and great fun to build our school learning community, and also be involved in the growth of Tadpole Garden Village. “We’re now busy recruiting staff

to open Year 2 in September and are discussing with Swindon Council the possibility of opening Years 3, 4 and 5 in September 2017. “Our Lilypads breakfast and after school club is also really popular; over 20 per cent of the children attend during the week.” In February a new outdoor stage performance area was unveiled outside the reception classroom. The Faraday Challenge Day which was run by the Institution of Engineering and Technologys (IET) saw teams racing against the clock to solve engineering questions using the BBC micro:bit - the small, programmable computer chip designed to introduce students to coding used to create games , animations and apps Holly Margerison, IET Faraday education manager, said: “There is a huge demand for new engineers

and technicians. The practical work challenges perceptions of engineering and inspires the next generation to become involved with digital technology.” The Faraday Challenge programme aims to encourage more young people to study and consider exciting and rewarding careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by using creativity, innovation and problemsolving skills. The IET is tackling the skills gap by supporting the increase in the number of engineering apprentices and encouraging more girls to consider careers around STEM subjects. Young people from the emerge youth project at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw were busy during the Autumn term fundraising for Toybox charity, which works with street children in Latin America. The youngsters raised an impressive total of £800 through a sponsored walk and run and cake sale in Lydiard Park, and at the club’s annual Christmas show. During the evening Amy O’Melia of Toybox gave a moving account of how the charity meets the street

children’s basic needs for food, shelter, education and love. They also focus on providing children with birth certificates to give them a legal identity and protection. It also means that they can take exams, get married, and do

March: What to do about tantrums Information and advice for parents from ePIP Every parent dreads the terrible twos and being faced with the sight of their own child in melt down, screaming and thumping the floor, lying face down in the frozen food aisle of the local supermarket. However, tantrums are a natural stage of a child’s development. They typically occur between the ages of 2 and 4 and peak at 2½ with over 90 per cent of children at this age exhibiting tantrums. During this time children are undergoing major physical, intellectual and emotional changes. Their vocabularies are growing, they’re eager to do things on their own and they’re beginning to understand rules and consequences. However, most 2 year olds can’t yet clearly communicate their needs or control their feelings and this can easily result in frustration and misbehaviour. To help minimise tantrums, have clear, simple rules that your child can follow and simple consequences for bad behaviour. Alongside this, using praise, encouragement and rewards for good behaviour is essential. When appropriate, avoid saying ‘no’ too often, but mix in phrases like ‘yes, but after lunch’ or ‘later.’ If a tantrum occurs, remain calm and allow them to release their emotions. Important things to remember about tantrums: • They are a normal part of child development. • They can be reduced, but probably not avoided. • Distraction techniques can help bring them to an early end. • Soothing helps them to selfmanage emotions in later life. After tantrums have subsided, continue the really important job of building up their self-esteem with lots of cuddles and positive attention. Fostering proves a dream role for North Swindon family

A campaign has been launched in Swindon to encourage people to consider becoming foster carers and discover how fulfilling it can be. The appeal asks potential carers whether there is something missing in their life and if this vital role could hold the key. That was certainly the case for Bob Campbell and his wife Sam, who started fostering early last year. The couple from North Swindon have two teenage daughters and decided the time was right to take other less fortunate children under their wing. Sam, aged 45, a call centre manager, said: “It was something we had wanted to do for a long time and it has turned out even better than we expected. Although it’s demanding, we wouldn’t change it for the world – the only bit I’m dreading is them going.” Besides having Becky and Megan in their house, it’s now also home to a teenage film buff and 10 year old football fan so family life is busier than ever. Sam said: “We want to make sure they grow up fit and healthy so we all go out for walks together and try to have a balanced diet. They are also starting to open up and share things about their past. Sometimes you have to watch out for the signs because it’s not always obvious that they need to talk.”

Becky and Megan are also benefiting from the experience – in fact fostering was partly their idea. Sam added: “Bob and I had talked about fostering ages ago. We were watching a TV programme about it with the girls and they said we should do it. They are more independent now and through this are learning how to understand and relate to people more.” Bob, a car production worker, went part-time and Sam has kept her full-time role. The council aims to recruit 40 foster carers in 2016 to support its priority to ‘always protect our most vulnerable children and adults’ to meet its pledge to ‘increase the number of foster carers in Swindon so that every ‘child is looked after’ who should be, is placed in their home borough.’ Foster carers of all ages are needed for children of all ages, with placements lasting anything from a few days to many years. Carers must have a spare room and they receive payment and allowances to help cover their time and expenses, as well as free ongoing training. Given the timelines of publication for The Link, articles need to be written some weeks before an issue appears. Having wondered how it must feel for those ordering their Christmas stock in June, I am having a minor taste of bridging the present and the future in writing an article for Easter at the very beginning of Lent. The start of Lent is known as Ash Wednesday and its theme is repentance, a word which conjures up the image of a preacher on the High Street exhorting passers-by to turn from their sins and be saved; most of those passing either stare incredulously or give the preacher a wide berth looking steadfastly ahead. Easter, on the other hand, is about hope, a quality which all of us feel the need of, especially in a world where so much seems fragile and uncertain. So if Ash Wednesday is the beginning and Easter Day the conclusion of Lent, what is the connection and how do hope and repentance hold together? In church services on Ash Wednesday people are often given the opportunity to be marked with ash. A minister draws a cross on the forehead and says, “Remember you are dust and to dust you will return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.” The ash – a symbol of dust – is a reminder of our mortality; that life is short and fragile. On the face of it there does not seem much hopeful about this. In our age, the wonders of science have enabled us to speak the language of the bible in a fresh way. Human beings are indeed made of dust – the ‘dust’ from stars. The elements which make up the earth were formed in the heart of stars billions upon billions of years ago; Joni Mitchell’s song ‘Woodstock’, made famous by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, refers to human beings as ‘stardust’. Echoing the words

used in church, the narrative of science tells us that we will return to dust, and not only human beings but all creation; everything in the universe is destined to fade out. This narrative can feel profoundly depressing and evacuate us of a sense of hope. Deep within the human soul we feel that there must be more. The events of Easter stand as a sign and declaration that there is more and that the universe is not a wonderful but eventually futile project. At the centre of Easter is a singular human being, Jesus of Nazareth, whose life, death and resurrection from death gives rise to a different narrative and leads us into a very different mindset and lifestyle. To repent literally means to set our minds and attitudes in a new direction and recognise the faithfulness of God. The resurrection is an announcement that death and decay will not have the last word in God’s creation. The Christian faith holds out an invitation to align our own living and our dying with that of Jesus Christ and to experience the Spirit of hope, good news and determination that characterised his life. In recent months we have mourned the passing of many wellknown figures who have impacted our lives; David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Terry Wogan to name three. Many of us will also have lost friends and close relatives. Easter tells us that there is a unique historical figure whose life and death have not only made a difference to our past, but changed our future. To repent is to be transformed by this hope - not just once but regularly - and to receive it as the amazing good news it truly is. May I wish you a very special Easter.

Talks, ideas, literature and fun Excitement is mounting ahead of the launch of this year’s Swindon Festival of Literature at Central Library on 17 March when the full programme will be announced. Up to date signings include a number of big names who will comment on the state of the world and a couple of novelists who will be talking about the world as they see it. Former Secretary of State and Business Secretary, Sir Vince Cable, will be appearing at Swindon Arts Centre on 3 May to talk about his book After the Storm, which explores and explains the causes of

recent crises in world economics and how Britain should respond to the great challenges they brought. Also explaining a few things, about where she believes values and real character lie in the modern world, will be thinker, writer, and social commentator Cristina Odone. Another speaker who will be exploring where he thinks future politics is heading, will be former London Mayor Ken Livingstone on 10 May. In the first week of the festival, on 5 May, former BBC Radio Wiltshire presenter now turned novelist Alison Bruce will be talking about her latest crime thriller, The Promise. Prize-winning novelist, musician, and poet, best known for Captain Correlli’s Mandolin, Louis de Bernieres will be in town to talk about his newest book, The Dust that Falls from Dreams. For children, there’s the Children and Families Day at Lower Shaw Farm on Sunday 8 May. The festival runs from 2 to 14 May. Lauren Penney from Rushey Platt is four years old on 29 February and will be celebrating her first birth-day. She was the only leapling to be born at the GWH birthing suite in 2012. Mum Anna said: “On the day of her arrival I awoke at 3.30am and Lauren was with us by 7.30am. Her father Stuart was shocked that she had arrived so quickly.” Anna has discovered hearing test machines and Apple devices don’t recognise 29 February as a valid date whilst the UK recognises leaplings after the birthday has past which means Lauren’s legal birthday takes place on 1 March. For the last three years the family, which now includes younger brother Cameron, has held mini-parties on 28 February and 1 March. Anna added: “Lauren knows this year is important but doesn't appreciate the difference in the astronomical year and calendar year. We’re planning an extra special party for her to celebrate with her friends.”

Town’s special year gets into gear Events to mark the year when modern Swindon came into being and to tell the story of what a great place it has become in the last 175 years - start to gather momentum in late February and March. On 25 February 1841 a letter by Daniel Gooch, Superintendent of Locomotives of the Great Western Railway, was considered by the company’s board of directors. His recommendation was that the

green fields below the market town on a nearby hill were the most suitable for an engine and carriage maintenance and construction works, and the rest is history. A new railway town was born which quickly joined up with the old town and went on to become famous the world over - for its railway related products and the social innovations that came with it. Following it came more

industrial development, including the eventual closure of the railways, new technologies and the growth of a major service economy that has seen Swindon provide homes for over 200,000 people. On 25 February primary schools across the town will be celebrating Gooch’s letter and the GWR board’s decision with special assemblies, role plays and history lessons. Every child attending a

Swindon 175 Profile: Deacon & Son Woven into the fabric of Swindon itself, Deacons was founded as a jewellers, watch and clock makers by George Deacon in 1848 and remains a family run business now in its sixth generation with Richard Deacon. Having moved from Westbury under the lure of the rapid expansion of Swindon, during the industrial revolution, George Deacon recognised the need for time-keeping in the fast paced factories and engineering centres of the GWR works and was awarded a subcontract for the Great Western railway timing between Paddington and Swansea. In those early days George Deacon was reliant on obtaining diamonds, precious and semiprecious stones from South America, in particular from Brazil where an agent was employed to bring back goods to England. During the period of 1860 to 1890 the business expanded, with the addition of George’s nephews Hubert and Joshua, producing a variety of time pieces, including long case clocks, trunk dial clocks, carriage clocks, pocket watches and mercurial barometers. Many

of these time pieces exist to this day and are still serviced in the company’s workshops. After succeeding his uncle, Hubert became the first president of the Swindon Chamber of Commerce in 1893 and was also responsible for supplying Swindon’s first public clock on the Town Hall. To this day, Deacons is operating from its first premises on Wood Street in Old Town, with its own workshops on site. Having grown with the town, Deacons now operate in Faringdon in Oxfordshire, Marlborough and Royal Wootton Bassett. Richard Deacon, managing director of Deacons, said: “We have the oldest shop in Swindon and having our own on site workshops and jewellers allows us to offer personalised and specialist products, but remain very broad in our approach to make sure every taste is catered for. “As part of Swindon 175 we wanted to do something that celebrated both our business and the heritage of the town. We have produced a gold plated ‘skeleton half hunter’ pocket watch celebrating one of the most famous

locomotives from the GWR works; King George V.” The 4-6-0 King class locomotive was built at the Swindon Works in 1927 to feature in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad centenary celebrations, and became one of the most famous of the Swindon made locomotives. The Swindon Symphony Orchestra is fast developing a reputation for its polished performances of a wide range of orchestral music, and its audience numbers continue to grow. Two brothers from Swindon, Mark and Ian Kenna, are gearing up for the gruelling challenge of running three marathons during April in aid of Cancer Research UK. The pair have been working over the past three years to get themselves in shape, with their healthier lifestyles resulting in shedding a combined 20 stone, and have now decided to run the Bath Half, Brighton and London marathons in memory of their aunt Mary Parsons. Mark and Ian have set a fundraising target of £5,000, with a black tie event to be held at The Village Hotel in Shaw Ridge on Saturday 2 April. Most recently, the pair announced that they will not only be taking on the task of the 2.5 marathons already planned, but have also signed up to compete in the Race to the Stones. This ultra-marathon takes runners along the ancient routes of Romans, Vikings, farmers and traders from the rolling hills of Oxfordshire, over the Thames and up onto the downlands of Salisbury Plain finishing at the largest Neolithic stone circle in Europe at Avebury. Runners can choose whether to complete the race in one go or break it down into two days as the Kennas will do. They will be running 50km (31 miles) per day which is further than any marathon, again in aid of Cancer Research UK. Redhouse triathlete racing for Macmillan Swindon triathlete Alex North has just completed his first half marathon of 2016 and is planning even more races in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Alex, who is 33 and a member of the Swindon Triathlon Club, was by his own admission never really into fitness, having only ever engaged in a cycle around the Isle of Wight for the British Heart Foundation. In November 2014 his wife Joanne was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer, involving surgery and a six week course of radiotherapy, and this proved to be his inspiration to raise money for Macmillan. Alex said: “After Joanne had begun to recover from her ordeal I

Ricardo and his team will be taking on the bike ride to support several local charities including Prospect Hospice, Brighter Futures and Younite Outreach Project and is looking for further support from local businesses’. Ricardo said: “In the last 12 months I have run a bootcamp club for the community. Every other month we hold an all day event which brings people together and helps raise around £400 for a different local charity.

Swindon NIHL Wildcats were celebrating this month after reaching the cup finals following a tense 9-7 victory over the Haringey Racers at the Swindon Ice Arena to top the standings with eight points from their six games. Despite losing to the Bristol Pitbulls 7-1 in their opening game of the season back in October and also falling 8-5 at Slough Jets, subsequent results over Slough Jets [3-1], Pitbulls [6-1], Racers [5-3 and 9-7] saw the club’s second tier side qualify for the finals weekend. Player-coach Dan Sullivan who may be a novice when it comes to finals, knows that gaining silverware in only his second season in charge, would be the icing on the cake for his promising side. One thing’s for sure, Sullivan is under no illusions as to what to expect when he makes his cup finals bow at the end of March - and he can’t wait to get the show on the road. “I’m really looking forward to being involved in my first cup finals,” the 26-year-old said. “I

know how special it can be to reach the finals, and we’ll be determined to go all the way. “In cup competitions you can never look any further than the next game and we know whoever we face at Alexandra Palace in the semi-final game will give us a very tough game, so we can’t afford to be complacent. “If we play to our strengths then we know we have enough to win the game and make the final.” The Wildcats could yet be joined by the Pitbulls if they defeat bottom placed Jets in their final match of the group stages, but defeat would see current second placed Racers take the spot. A lot of people say that they would cycle more if they felt safer. Here’s the boring statistical evidence: The likelihood of being killed or seriously injured on a bike is about the same per mile travelled as it is as a pedestrian. A five mile bike ride is about as likely to result in death as a 55 mile car journey, but nobody thinks that driving 55 miles is an extreme sport (unless you’re doing it at 110mph through the Welsh forests in a Subaru of course!) So, why do people not feel safe on a bike? For most people, they will have been riding a bike long before they started to drive, so it can’t be that they don’t know how to operate a bicycle. Safety is an issue when cycling because even a small encounter with a much heavier motorised vehicle can result in an injury, so what can be done to improve it? This list is in no particular order: segregated cycle lanes/paths, more 20mph limits in residential areas (see the Twenty’s Plenty campaign), better junction design to allow cyclists through in a safer

manner, priority to cyclists at some junctions, a system of presumed liability where the driver of the largest vehicle is deemed to be at fault unless proven otherwise and quite simply, more cyclists. What? No helmets or hi-viz?? Hiviz has a place as it makes you more visible to drivers. But if all of the above was in place, there would be no need for it. And helmets do not make cycling safer – they perform a basic function of potentially making the outcome of some types of accidents less severe. But I end this month by emphasising one of my earlier points. The risk of being seriously injured is 11 times higher on a bike than it is in a car – but that is 11 times “virtually nothing” which is still virtually nothing. Clubs Together in Purton A village open day will take place on Saturday 7 May from 11am to 4pm bringing all of Purton’s sporting clubs together. The Purton Clubs Together day will be held at the Millennium Hall and will act as a membership drive for the village’s organisations. There will be club representatives from cricket, football, bowls, tennis, air rifle, skittles, darts and yoga

as well as representatives from organisations like scouts, guides, bridge, historical society, gardening club and the Womens’ Institute. This will be an opportunity to find out more information and join the many clubs and organisations who all exist within the village boundaries. Safer cycling?

On 19 March, Swindon Town travel to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry – at approximately 180 miles, amongst the shortest round trips in League One North this season. Trust STFC (the Swindon Town Supporters’ Trust) want to make this an away day to remember and have launched the ‘#5ktoCoventry’ initiative aimed at Robins fans young and old making the trip up the M5 to lend support to Luke Williams and the team. Of course, we recognise that 5,000 is a frankly daft goal but the aim is to get those supporters who might otherwise spend the afternoon on the sofa, to board coaches, cars and trains to come along and add to the atmosphere. Wouldn’t it be incredible if we beat the previous best travelling attendance to the Ricoh of just over 3,000 back in 2013? This could be the chance for a lapsed fan to rekindle his passion for the club, it could be an opportunity to give a youngster his or her first experience of following Town on the road or it could be an excuse for a day out and a few drinks with friends.

Training and costume making activities are in full swing for a lively group of friends as they prepare for their first Mad March Hare event. They’ve been running together since last summer when they took part in the Swindon Tri Active beginners’ course and have since been seen at running events in fancy dress, from Smurfs to super heroes. For this year’s Mad March Hare they’ll be dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland. “Running has transformed our lives,” said Dorinda Moffatt. “We’re getting fit and enjoying the outdoors as well having fun

Kit collection to boost cycling in Rwanda A Swindon cycling club is supporting an appeal to help young people across Africa to set their sights on becoming involved in professional cycling. Following the participation of the first team from Africa in the 2015 Tour de France, professional cyclist Matt Barmmeier learnt more about the amount of raw talent desperate to be part of the sport. Now riding for Team Dimension Data, alongside top British sprinter Mark Cavendish, Matt is collecting and sending usable cycle clothing, helmets, cycle shoes and glasses to Rwanda, starting out with youngsters at the Adrien Niyonshuti cycling academy. Sport and Leisure Footballer plans walk to raise cash to coach disabled young people   Josh Seller is fundraising to provide football coaching for less able young people who attend Uplands School in association with Reading FC. With his parents the 11 year old Red Oaks Primary School pupil, who is a member of both Reading and Dorcan football academies, has devised a 10 mile walking route which starts at Uplands School and finishes at Dorcan Academy club to be completed on 5 April.  Josh’s mother Alexia Seller is a governor at Uplands School and said she was touched when Josh suggested the idea. She said: “Josh was inspired to do the walk after his friend Jackson Allen walked 10 miles for Alzeimer’s Research in December. “I’m incredibly proud of him and his maturity in understanding what the young people have to go through and that he would like to give something back. Uplands is a fantastic school and I’m keen to support him raise as much money as possible for them.”  Josh said: “I can see the Uplands students playing football on the school field from my window and decided that I wanted to try and

raise money for them to have the same training and opportunities as me. “I haven’t started training but I will soon. I once walked about six miles when I was 7 or 8 years old and that was quite tiring. I’m older now so I should find it easier, but training for a long walk is different to training for football.”  Uplands headteacher, Deirdre Fitzpatrick commented: “We’re very touched that Josh was taking a whole day out of his holidays to complete a long walk to raise money for people who are less fortunate than himself. “He’s a role model for young people and we really hope the people of Swindon support him in achieving his target.”  Nick Bolton, from Advanced Sports Coaching Ltd, said: ”We’re delighted to be aiding Josh to raise funds for Uplands School. Three of the four brothers who work together in a local family firm will be taking part in an adrenaline-charged skydive to raise funds for Prospect Hospice, the charity that cared for their father in his final days. Steve, Kevin and Chris Hawkins, who all work for the family firm Alan Hawkins Estate Agents Limited in Royal Wootton Bassett, have all signed up to take part in the forthcoming Parachute for Prospect event, which will involve a tandem skydive from above Redlands Airbase in Wanborough. Having set themselves a combined sponsorship total of £2,000, the brothers are well on their way to their target, with close to £1,000 already donated. Kevin Hawkins explained: “Dad received brilliant care at the end of his life at Prospect Hospice, and we were so impressed that we

were determined to give something back to show our appreciation. As we were leaving the hospice after Dad passed, I saw a leaflet about Parachute for Prospect and I thought – we could do this, so we signed up soon after.” Anna Smithson, challenge events fundraiser at Prospect Hospice, said: “Parachute for Prospect is a popular way for people to raise funds for us, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” The Hawkins brothers will be taking to the skies on Sunday 20 March, with places still available for people who would like to take part. It’s an initiative co-ordinated by the Skills Funding Agency and will include hundreds of events across England to showcase apprentices and apprentice employers. Apprenticeships are thriving in England at present and the week will celebrate the positive impact that they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. Employers, apprentices, business support organisations, colleges, training organisations and schools will be hosting activities to showcase the achievements and benefits of apprenticeships. King George V arriving at Steam museum in November last year where it is currently on display

While visiting my son recently, I looked through a copy of Swindon Link, Number 403, I enjoyed the articles and links to Steam and the two great locomotives. I have visited Steam several times and consider it a wonderful place. It is not as big as the National Railway Museum at York, but I find Steam is more atmospheric. I particularly like the carriage construction exhibit and could spend hours around, and under Caerphilly Castle. I will be visiting again soon. The statement on the front of that issue of SwindonLink read, “Made in Swindon – King George V, the greatest locomotive built in the town, now back at Steam”. It was my intention to push the case for 92220 Evening Star. I have several photographs of that locomotive, mostly taken at York. A particular favourite is a close up of the plate that carries the legend, ‘Built 1960 Swindon.’ I accept that King George V was designed in Swindon and Evening Star in Brighton, but they were both built in Swindon. Having consulted my trusty tome on BR steam locomotives, I find that your statement was justified. King George V had a locomotive weight of 89t 0cwt, driving wheel diameter of 6’6”, boiler pressure of 250psi superheated and a tractive effort of 40,285lbf whereas Evening Star had a locomotive weight of 86t 14cwt, driving wheel diameter of 5’0”, boiler pressure of 250psi superheated and a tractive effort of 39,670lbf. Swindon Lions Club, who in 2015 celebrated 50 years, had a very successful year. We would like to say thank you to all the people of Swindon who donated money at the various events. These included the fireworks display at the Polo Ground in November where £15,000 was raised. The club raised almost £20,000 in the year. With this money, we helped local charities, such as Downs Syndrome Group, Twigs, SMASH, Swindon Talking Newspapers, SCWD, Teenage Cancer Trust, Women’s

Refuge, together with people through the Welfare system. We have served the community since 1965 and now have 23 members male and female, aged between 30 and 80. The Club is always looking for new members, we meet every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the Village Urban Resort (De Vere) at the Shaw Ridge Complex. International Women’s Day Swindon 2016 • Saturday 5 March, 10am to 3.30pm

A one-day festival at Central Library with poetry, music, song and dance, family activities and stalls, networking opportunities for community groups and women’s business clubs, keynote talks and panel discussion on the issues confronting women in technology. Followed by a month-long arts and cultural programme focussed on Equality for Women in the Age of Technology through an exhibition ‘Dress:CODE’ held in three sites in central Swindon which presents questions around the gender gap of women and girls entering industry.
