However the closing date for bids from alternative business or not-forprofit operators was 7 February. Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon cabinet member for leisure, said there has been significant interest in the town’s leisure and golf portfolio. “It is important that we hear from the public about what they think of the proposals before a final decision is made.” The operators will have leases for 99 years but will only be required to keep a facility open for 3 years before they can discuss alternative uses with the council. This may result in developers negotiating a 999 year lease with the proceeds of site redevelopment split with the council. Thousands more houses to north west to be the price for extending Thamesdown Drive Central government is only likely to commit £60 million for the road if Swindon and Wiltshire accept that more houses will be built outside the town’s boundary to the north west at Pry Farm and on land between West Swindon and Lydiard Millicent. There are suggestions there could be 10,000 new houses, closing the gap with Purton and bringing Swindon closer to Cricklade. The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, at a meeting with the town’s MPs in July 2013, told The Link there was a case for a western

Building companies are known to have options to purchase green field land for development to the north and west of the town, even though the sites are not now identified in Wiltshire’s current planning core strategy. But, as with Ridgeway Farm, if a developer submits a proposal for a major development, it could succeed at a planning appeal stage. In the October 2013 Link Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon cabinet member for highways strategic transport and leisure, said completing Thamesdown Drive could result in more houses. Now he says the council is caught between a rock and a hard place. “The council spent £60,000 last Autumn on drawing an outline plan to extend Thamesdown Drive with links to Cheney Manor. “I took it to Whitehall to be told that we needed more buy-in from the Local Enterprise Partnership for Swindon and Wiltshire (LEP). The transport board which I chair has only £12 million allocated by government to cover all schemes in the town and county but has been told the LEP could apply for government ‘growth point funding.’ But as the name implies the business case would have to spell out the economic expansion to justify the funding. “The cost of designing the exten-

The Labour opposition on Swindon Council has called on Cllr Williams to commit the £1 million to design the road as the need is present and funding will be made eventually. www.swlep.biz

Applications to build first homes at Tadpole Farm lodged Swindon Council will be considering plans for the first of 1,700 homes to be built at Tadpole Farm in March. Applications have been made by Crest Homes and David Wilson Homes to build 206 houses near the centre of the site, where the primary school, commercial and community facilities will be located. Work on building an access road into the middle of the overall development started in December to allow construction of the primary school ready for September. The developers have permission to use it until December this year, after which a construction haul road off Ermin Street must be ready.

They are following a syllabus produced by The Hour of Code, an international initiative to teach students one hour of computer programming each week. Using different types of software and interfaces pupils learn how computers think and work. The object is to develop project ideas which could lead to writing computer games and apps. Susan Mulrain is marking her first year offering movement and singing classes for babies and pre-school children in the town. Susan was a keen musician at school and in January 2013 after a career as a radiographer in the NHS, she changed direction to set up her own music franchise business with Jo Jingles. Business as usual for Butterflies on a bigger scale Following the closure of Greenmeadow Children’s Centre at the end of December, Butterflies Children’s Centre based at Abbey Meads Primary School has taken on responsibility for working with families in Greenmeadow and Haydon Wick, expanding the reach of the centre to approximately 13,000 homes, and 3,600 children under the age of 5.

Butterflies now covers Abbey Meads, Groundwell, Haydon End, Taw Hill, Oakhurst, Redhouse, Ashbrake, St Andrews Ridge, and now Greenmeadow, Haydon Wick and parts of Woodhall Park. Centre manager Tanya Parkinson said: “The Butterflies catchment area has the largest number of families within Swindon. It might also be a surprise to people that the centre works with the third highest number of vulnerable families.” After central government cuts forced Swindon Council to rationalise financial support for children’s centres, funding for Butterflies has been adjusted to make it equitable with centres across the town. The nature of work at all children’s centre is changing said Tanya. “From 1 April 80 per cent of funding will be allocated to work with families in greatest need, with the other twenty per cent used to organise groups and activities available to all families to take part in.
“However it really is difficult to run activities in Redhouse because there are no facilities available but we’re working with the council on a plan to overcome this problem.” Staff offer support and advice to parents on accessing childcare and nursery places, especially since more two years olds are now eligible for free funding. Tanya said two new initiatives are responding to needs in the area. “Recently we started a new group called Listening Ear for parents who feel isolated, are feeling low, or who have experienced post natal depression. “It offers the chance to meet up with like-minded mums and carers and will be supported by a counsellor as the group grows. “In the pipeline is a group for Forces’ families with children under 5.” For more details about activities at Butterflies call 01793 722984 or 07814 240997, or see www. abbeymeads.swindon.sch.uk/butterflies

All smiles at Smiles as Ken’s painting fills the gap Visitors to the Smiles dental centre in Upper Stratton now have a fascinating local point of interest to view while waiting for their appointment – thanks to a deal struck with one of the patients. When artist Ken White, who was recognised as a ‘Swindon Treasure’ in the December 2012 Link, called in to the surgery to have some work done, dentist Stuart Miles saw the opportunity to strike an unusual arrangement. Stuart said: “I knew of Ken when he came to us for denture repairs, but I didn’t realise his incredible achievements. “We got talking about his career, his early days as an apprentice in the railway works, his work as a commercial artist and painting murals for Richard Branson, and we agreed a deal to provide treatment in exchange for one of his paintings.” Smiles underwent renovation last autumn, and a large wall provided the perfect place to display the painting. Ken White’s life is told in the spring edition of Swindon Heritage, which features Ken White on its cover, right. Published at the end of February, the magazine includes a close look at how the town’s industrial landscape has influenced Ken’s work. What’s On at The Brunel Swindon’s town centre is going back in time during the Vintage & Retro festival this March! On Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March, the whole town centre will be themed and include vintage stalls in a marquee in Wharf Green, classic cars, classic motorbikes and live music. The Brunel’s Shopping Centre will be hosting two days of vintage fashion shows and demonstrations of hair styling and makeup of the 1940’s and 1950’s. Plus, come along to ‘Make and Do’ session with the Blitz Buddies; once you’ve selected your outfit and had your hair and makeup done, you can dance the evening away with The Brunel! Race night for Luca An evening at Steam Museum on Saturday 1 March, supported by Richard James Estate Agents, will raise money towards helping ten year old Luca Railton to undergo operations in the USA to save his mobility. Luca was born with bilateral tibial hemimelia, which means he is without a tibia or knee in his right leg, and only has a partial tibia in his left leg. For 10 years his parents have managed to stave off the diagnosis that recommended amputation after he was born. Since then Luca has endured more than 60 hours in surgery as doctors have worked to lengthen and
straighten his legs as he has grown. However specialists say they are unable to do any more for his right leg. It has to be fused or amputated. Luca’s parents Teresa and Alex Railton have arranged for an American surgeon, who has treated more than 200 patients with similar conditions, to carry out a series of operations on Luca in Florida, starting on 27 March.

Swindon Museum & Art Gallery has one of the best collections of modern art works by 20th Century and contemporary British artists. The free exhibition shows off some of the most colourful, dramatic and energetic works from the Swindon Col-
lection, featuring paintings by Roger Hilton, Howard Hodgkin, George Melhuish and Stephen Buckley. Abstract art is not concerned with reproducing the appearance of things as they seem in real life. Abstract artists distort shapes, colours and sizes to create unexpected images with a distant connection to the subject that inspired the work. In this exhibition, you will see bold, colourful and dramatic art to make you think and perhaps inspire. It includes some recently acquired contemporary paintings which have never been displayed before. Natural history on show until 5 July The Swindon Museum and Art Gallery holds a large collection of natural history and it’s all going on display from 28 February. See stuffed animals, birds, fish, eggs, shells, horns and antlers, as well as insects, plants and seeds, many of which are from Swindon and the surrounding countryside. The exhibition includes species that have become rare or extinct and can tell us much about the natural world and the environment in and around the town, which was once very small and surrounded by farmland. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 3pm, and entry is free.

Nine year old Phoebe Maddison from Groundwell was a guest and a winner at the 2nd International Emmy® Kids Awards in New York after appearing in a BBC documentary Same But Different. She starred in the film to explain what it is like to live with life threatening Type 1 Diabetes which she has had since the age of four. Made in 2011 the Same But Different series helps children understand how youngsters with such conditions are perceived. Phoebe and her father Antony were asked by doumentary makers Libra Television to attend the International Kids Emmys which honour excellence in programming produced and broadcast outside the United States. This is the third year that Babs has taken part and the second for Sian and Tegan. “We are a family who love to do sports,” says Babs, 75, who won bronze and silver medals for sprinting at county level in Nottingham as a schoolgirl and later when in the RAF. Stonehenge is setting for marathon and trail One of the most spectacular settings for any event of its kind will greet competitors in the Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon on 4 May. Organised in aid of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, the event comprises runs, walks and cycle rides, with many starting at Avebury and finishing at Stonehenge. It is designed to appeal to serious runners, walkers and cyclists, as well as families and people wanting a fun day in the countryside. As well as a full and half marathon, there is a range of walks between seven and 26 miles, and bike rides of either 30km or a 50km multi-terrain circular mountain bike route. They all provide a rare opportunity to access
areas usually closed to the public. All participants who cross the finish line at Stonehenge receive free refreshments, along with a medal. Thanks to English Heritage, those with medals will have the opportunity to enter the Stonehenge site for free for the rest of the day. Taw Hill residents call for sewage tanks to go before planning councillors People living in Taw Hill met Thames Water on 22 January to see plans for two huge underground storage tanks, which had little changed to those displayed last year. The tanks in the middle of housing at either end of Queen Elizabeth Drive, would provide storage for overflow rainwater and sewage that could result from the 1,700-home Tadpole Farm development to the north. Residents believe the tanks will create a flood risk, result in unpleasant smells for nearby housing, and are angry that the tanks are not part of the existing sewage system. The contents will have to be pumped out into mobile tankers, at any time that suits Thames Water. Representatives from Optimise, Dan Heeley and Hugh Thomas, argued the benefit of the tanks to the wider community by removing the risk of flooding in other parts of North Swindon, and said they would only be used at times of extreme rainfall, only once every 30 years. Although billed as a consultation event, on the same day local councillors Emma Faramazi and Toby Elliott

received a notice from Swindon Council’s planning department that construction work could start on 17 February, and they needed to make their comments by 31 January. Residents have called on Swindon Council to invoke an Article 4 directive in planning legislation which would require the proposal to be debated by the full planning committee. Priory Vale councillor Emma Faramazi said: “These tanks are far too close to houses, and to receive an email from a planning officer telling us work could start on 17 February was a major concern, given there is so much opposition in the community.”

As a brand ambassador for Safe and Sound vehicle warranties, Sir Stirling met Skurray’s Vauxhall managing director Nick Plevey and his staff at the West Swindon showroom on Mead Way. He is recognised as one of the greatest all-round racing drivers in the history of motorsport, but Sir Stirling and most of his contemporaries were renowned for never wearing seatbelts when racing. He said: “In my day there was a great fear of fire. If you’re driving a Maserati with 45 gallons of
fuel behind you and a tank in front, you preferred to take your chances in a crash and hope you could get away when the car came to a stop.” Sir Stirling, who is 83, still drives, albeit at a slower pace. While Lady Moss has an Aston Martin, he now drives an electric car. Skurray’s managing director Nick Plevey said: “Sir Stirling is an absolute legend, and you don’t often get the opportunity to meet somebody like him. “It’s a great honour to have him come to our showroom.”

School fundraisers back in business with barbecue The Friends of Millbrook Primary School thought their fundraising might be at an end when their barbecue fell to pieces at last June’s sports day. But with help from community facilitator Gail Light, staff at the Homebase depot at Lydiard Field have come up with a brand new replacement. Rebecca Boase, chair of the friends association, said: “Buying a new barbecue big enough to serve several hundred people at a school event was going to be far too expensive to make it worthwhile. I have lived in Redhouse for ten years and during this time have seen a significant increase in dog mess on footpaths and green areas in Redhouse, Oakhurst and on Shaw Ridge. I am a proud dog owner and consider myself to be very responsible when it comes to the disposal of dog waste in the large number of waste bins provided by Swindon Borough Council. I would ask all dog owners, if you see anyone that is not picking up their dog’s waste and disposing of it in a responsible way to speak to them and remind them there is a fine for this offence of up to £1,000. Fundamentally we are all trying to maintain a clean and healthy environment that we can all enjoy. I am sure nobody wants to see this foul mess in public places nor have to clean it off their children or pets. 45

Currently anybody who has been given a voucher to help them until statutory support is available has to make their way into the town centre to collect food and then is faced with transporting it home, usually by bus, sometimes with a child in a pushchair. Opening community distribution points pursues the charity’s objective of providing ‘local food for local people,’ said Andrew Hill of Foodbank. “Most of the food we give out is donated by shoppers when we hold collection days at supermarkets, or via local drop-off places, such as Hairworks Salon at Freshbrook Village Centre. Starting Foodbank at the church means the charity is embedding itself into the community” Volunteer manager Julie Byrd said
helpers initially are church members but anybody is welcome to volunteer. “I realised people could sometimes go for days without enough food because they couldn’t scrape together the bus fare to go to town to collect supplies, then didn’t have the energy to carry them home. We couldn’t continue knowing that there are people in the community going hungry.” Swindon Council statistics suggest West Swindon has the fourth highest need for emergency food relief in the town. “You never know when you might need help,” said Julie. “Hours can be cut, you might get ill or lose your job. It takes time to sort things out. We want to raise awareness that people can collect food in Freshbrook if they’ve been given a voucher which are available from a wide range of agencies.” Freshbrook Church is open for collections on Tuesdays, 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

They’re serving home-made soup and rolls on Thursday 27 February, 12noon to 2pm, for a £3 donation towards the End Polio Now campaign. Fiona Clark, community inclusion lead teacher at Uplands said: “It’s fantastic that our students want to help other people who are perhaps dealing with bigger problems than they might have. “We were keen to pick a campaign that was current and fitted with our curriculum of teaching the students
about the wider world.
