10 years reporting a growing link with Eastern Europe This edition marks the tenth anniversary since our first report on children in the former Soviet block country after Stephanie Glennie from Westlea rang us and demanded to know what we were doing about Dentaid. Of course we didn’t have a clue about the charity working in Ukraine to help children born with cleft palette, who are regarded as outcasts. The story sparked with us because young Ukrainian ice skater Marsha Poloushenko was partnering Andrew Seabrook at Link Centre and we took them to London to meet children receiving remedial surgery. Brendon Ball from Freshbrook dental practice then became involved and we have reported his many trips to Ukraine including falling for and married the Dentaid translator Natasha Manamsa. When Gin McGiffin contacted us about Chernobyl Children Life Line last year we put her in touch with Brendon. The story continues.

Construction and operation of buildings contributes more than 50 per cent of carbon emissions (a major factor in climate change) in the UK and produces around 72 million tonnes of waste. The guidance document aims to secure more sustainable ways of designing and running new buildings in Swindon. Thumbs up for third cinema complex and new shops by 2010 Proposals to increase the number of shops, restaurants and cafes, and cinema screens in the town centre have been met with approval by the public who could be using the facilities in just three years.

The £200 million Regent Place development in the town centre between Regent Street and Commercial Road - was put on display for the second time in late January and goes before Swindon Council’s planners later in the year. The Modus Properties scheme will offer 300,000 square feet of retail space, centred around a major food store, large and small retail units, an 8 or 9 screen cinema and a ‘Manna’ food hall. A hotel and some 250 residential apartments will be built, and an underground car park will provide 750 spaces. A new pedestrian street on two levels will be built over what is now the Villett Street car park, from the Brunel Centre to the top of Regent Street, opposite the information centre. Modus will both own and manage the whole development rather than building it with a view to selling it off. Modus development director Neal Dale said he was pleased by the reaction to the proposals. “The purpose of the January exhibition was to demonstrate that we listened to suggestions made at the

first event in October and show we are pulling in the same direction in moving this important regeneration project forward. “Almost everyone we spoke to was positive about what we are promoting; there is a general recognition that a redevelopment of the town centre is required to provide the shops, leisure and parking facilities required to drag Swindon into the 21st Century and start competing with the likes of Reading, Bath and Bristol. “Another interesting observation was the switch from the scepticism that this redevelopment will actually get off the ground. People commented on the many ‘false dawns’ the town has experienced over the last decade or so. In January there was the sense that people are starting to believe in what we are promoting and can see that our design has been well thought out and will make a marked difference to the town’s retail draw.” The Regent Place development is part of the New Swindon Company’s regeneration scheme for the whole town centre. www.modusproperties.co.uk www.newswindon.co.uk

Work started in early February on a £130,000 project to build ‘wing walls’ where the canal goes under the bridge which was completed in 2002. Because of the curve in the road and the angle of the bridge over 5,000 tons of earth has to be removed from Moulden Hill to create enough room for a 70 foot canal boat to pass underneath - one day. Funding for the work comes from Crapper Waste landfill tax credits. Once contractors have completed the work in March, trust volunteers will be dredging the canal of vegetation, stopping up leaks and pumping water into the 800 metres closest to the road. They will then start work on renovating nearly a mile of canal to the River Ray aquaduct on the far side of Moulden Hill, which will join with the Cricklade Country Way scheme. Planning permission has been submitted to renovate the canal and steam railway, and to build new cycle and foot ways between Swindon and Cricklade. A £15 million lottery bid will be submitted in May to pay for the project. Roy Cartwright, chairman of the canal trust Swindon branch, said, “although the Purton Road Bridge section is not part of the Cricklade Country Way, the canal will be a major link into it.” Volunteers will be working on the site every weekend throughout the summer. When Mary Morgan of Grange Park declares that it’s a full-time job being her, it’s something of an understatement. Since leaving work 20 years ago she has travelled the world as a volunteer and shows no sign of taking things easy. Mary, right, declines to declare her age but is very obviously young at heart. Born in Coventry, where she witnessed the devastating bombing of the city during the war, Mary had a varied and exciting working life. A meeting called by Abbey Meads ward councillors for Thursday 15 March, 7pm, will give people living in Priory Vale the chance to find out more about the design and content of Redhouse Village Centre, and to discover when the area will get improved curbside recycling provision. Chris Cain, Crest Nicholson project manager for the village centre development, who was pictured in the February Link, will explain the progress of the first phase of the centre. He will talk about negotiations with a pub operator, give a likely timescale for opening, and also describe the other facilities to be built at the centre over the next two to three years. Hreod Burna old girl is now Nova Hreod governor Carol Gibbons was among the first intake of Hreod Burna Senior High School in 1967. Forty years later she is now vice-chair of governors at Hreod Parkway School, closely involved in the move to the new building which will be called, as revealed exclusively in the February Link, Nova Hreod. “I had a wonderful time at Hreod and had a fantastic education,” she said. A civil service career followed, and Carol returned to Swindon only five years ago on taking early retirement. At the time she was saddened to see that the school was on the brink of going into special measures, then read a notice in The Link calling for governors to come forward. She immediately volunteered her services. “I feel honoured and privileged to have been part of the effort of turning Hreod around. More primary places in the North While primary numbers in the West are falling, resulting in school closures, an extra 60 primary school places will be made available in North Swindon from September until 2010. After Haydon Wick councillor David Renard asked council officers to calculate the likely demand for places over the next four years they predicted a shortfall of 54 places. As a result coun Renard and coun Garry Perkins, cabinet member for Children’s Services, met with officers and school governors and have agreed that Catherine Wayte and Abbey Meads primary schools will both offer an extra form of entry of 30 spaces each. Coun Renard said, “a couple of years ago, there were insufficient primary school places for the children wanting to start school in North Swindon. After a long struggle, an extra form was eventually provided at Bridlewood to relieve the pressure until the opening of Orchid Vale and Red Oaks. “I was determined that this situation would not arise again since parents, quite rightly, want to send their children to school within their community. I am pleased to have been able to nip this potential problem in the bud.”

Join the Superstars, get out of a dead end and get yourself hired Young people big on ambition but short on formal qualifications are being given a second chance in an Apprentice-style course called Superstars – The Academy at New College. Michelle Dewberry, winner of BBC2’s The Apprentice, launched the intensive 12 week training programme in early February aimed at 16 to 24 year olds who want to kick start a career in fashion, fitness or management. Auditions will take place on 24 March before a panel who will choose 15 finalists in each category to start in April. At the end of the course, three winners will be selected. The prize has not been revealed yet, but will be linked to a dream job. All participants will be rewarded with increased confidence and educational achievements which could lead them on to higher qualifications or better career opportunities. The competition will combine elements of The Apprentice and XFactor but will avoid the unpleasant criticisms and confrontation used to boost TV ratings. College

Greendown was awarded its specialist status following a visit by one of Her Majesty’s schools inspectors. “The inspector was very impressed with the calm purposeful atmosphere of the school,” said Mr O’Sullivan. “It’s been a great year for the school with good GCSE and KS3 results. Second astro controversy hits school After the Greendown’s all weather surface was opened in 1988, residents living next to it objected to the floodlighting and sued Wiltshire County Council and then chairman of governors Roger Ogle. Their case was defeated in court. Now that the astroturf pitch is worn out, Swindon Hockey Club believes the school is aiming to force them out by replacing the surface with purpose built 5-a-side football pitches. But headteacher Steve O’Sullivan is keen to make it clear that, despite media speculation in February, no deal has been done with a private company to build football orientated facilities and that various options are still being considered by school governors. “We are looking at all ways to provide the best sporting facilities for the school and for the community we have served for over 20 years. This includes the hockey club who have been with us from the start. However the cost of replacing the astro turf starts at £250,000 which is far beyond what the school can afford. “In 2004 we submitted an application with Swindon Hockey Club, to the National Hockey Foundation for a grant to replace the pitch, but it was turned down. We’ve tried to get Swindon Council interested in the problem but without sucess. We have to come up with a forward plan and working with a commercial provider is one we have to consider.”

A cultural debate that has only just begun In the February Link Barbara Prothero expressed her frustration at being excluded from a Swindon Cultural Partnership discussion on culture in Swindon in December. Sarah Dawnay, below, of the cultural partnership explains there will be more opportunities for all to express their viewpoints. December was a very busy month for the Swindon Cultural Partnership. Amongst many other things, we worked to generate cultural debate by hosting a day about ‘Creativity or Negativity’ and we held a drop-in session to explore how the community would like input into the workings of the cultural partnership. The seminar aimed to get Swindon discussing culture and its legacy for the town, while the community event was more introspective and about the cultural partnership itself. One seminar can only just start to ask questions, so we have to continue to explore how creativity can have an impact - from historical Swindon to dramatic alternative visions for the future. This has already started to be played out to a wider public, starting with a radio debate on that day and following feed back we appreciate that the debate about culture must go on. Therefore, by the April Link we will be able to confirm another initiative to engender further debate amongst the people of Swindon. We have apologised in writing to

The session proved that there was an appetite for discussion about our work, so December’s event was a start rather than an end in itself. Swindon Wide Famous artwork in Lydiard church to be explained

A book to be published in the Spring records the history of the St John family and the extraordinary triptych in St Mary’s Church in Lydiard Park. Writer Simon Jenkins states in his book, England’s Thousand Churches, that in the church, “lies a treasure trove of Carolean art .... Were it to be removed lock, stock and barrel to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London it would cause a sensation”. The triptych is a giant family tree started in 1615 with, at its centre, images of Sir John St John, his wife and children, and the coffins of those who died as infants. In fact it should more properly be described as a polyptych as two further panels were discovered during extensive restoration work in the 1980s when the whole monuSimon Jenkins visiting the St John family triptch, from June 2002 Link ment was taken to pieces. Farmer Tom remembered Bloor Homes have again commemorated a man who once farmed the land where Priory Vale is now being developed. Their latest housing site, Saunders’ Mead, takes its name from Tom Saunders, a farmer, master-craftsman, builder who lived at Brook Farm, where Asda Walmart now stands. Tom was also the grandfather of Lorraine’s Palmer, Bloor’s marketing manager who said, “he was well-known in the area: big, strong and, at times, quite strict. My first memories of him are feeling in awe of a larger-than-life character. But he was a gentle giant who was passionate about his farm. “My family still has firm roots in the area. I live in Priory Vale, while my daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren live closeby. Over 20,000 people in more than 500 pools across the country will take part in the Swimathon, now in its 21st year. Sponsorship money will be shared between Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation which gives grants to local charities. Participants can choose the challenge that best suits them, from 1.5k to 5k which is 200 lengths of the pool. Teams of up to five people can also enter the 5k event. Some will be setting their own individual challenges, such as swimming the equivalent of the Channel or Loch Ness, to complete over as many sessions as they wish. “By taking part in Swimathon, you will not only help those supported by Marie Curie Cancer Care, but you will increase your fitness levels and feel a better person for

Five young members of Toothill junior youth club have started a qualification which could lead on to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The National Association of Clubs for Young People runs a scheme for 11 to 13 year olds which involves participants in group activities, developing new skills and learning about the environment. The High Sheriff of Wiltshire Geraldine Wimble will be visiting the club on 28 February to present achievement certificates. Treasurer Mavis Read, who has battled to prevent the Toothil Farm site where the club meets being lost to housing development, will also receive a special award for commitment to the community.

Children can beat boredom in the Easter break by taking part in a sports week run by an experienced PE teacher and responsible leaders. Children aged 9 to 13 will enjoy sports such as football, netball, hockey, tennis, badminton, volleyball, gymnastics, rounders, cricket, athletics, dance, Danish long ball and tug of war. The week will be based around team games and learning through competition. The course runs from 9.30am to 3pm, from 2 to 6 April and costs £55. Forms are available from Greendown School. Youth boost in the west A specially equipped van will be making regular visits to the Link Centre to give young people the chance to try out their DJ skills. Newly arrived youth worker, Huw Solly, explained that there are often large crowds of young people gathered outside the Link Centre on Friday evenings and he wants to see them get involved. On the first Friday of the month, the ice rink becomes the Sub Zero club, with DJs and light effects but for the rest of the time, youngsters struggle to find something to do. It is hoped that the van will be available every other week, but dates have yet to be finalised. Sports activities are another possibility and Huw, right, would like to hear from young people so they can help shape the service. He is also looking at expanding youth

Deadly dog disease on the rise Vets across Swindon are appealing to dog owners to become more aware of killer disease Parvovirus which is on the increase in the area. There has been an upsurge over the last three months amongst puppies who have not been vaccinated and dogs whose vaccination has lapsed. The virus is easily spread in faeces from infected animals and can be carried on people’s clothing and shoes, as well as dogs’ paws. A lost pond in West Swindon was ‘re-discovered’ by members of Shaw Residents’ Association in early February. With help from Swindon Council rangers and volunteer rangers, overgrown trees and vegetation was cleared away from a wildlife area created between Upper Shaw Farm and Eastleaze on the eastern end of Shaw Ridge in the mid-1980s. Rangers cut down large trees with chain saws before volunteers came in with saws and loppers to uncover fencing, steps and footpaths.

Black eyes for have-a-go residents Three Shaw residents living close to Shaw Village Centre were given a beating by young people on 9 February when they were asked not to make noise near George Tweed Gardens at the centre, and stop throwing stones at houses. One householder said when the gang of about 15 youth were asked to stop some turned on him and left him with a few bruises. He said, “it has been quieter after the dispersal order came into force at the village centre, but young people know that the police do not enforce it and this was one of several incidents over the last few months.” The police are making investigations and local councillor Kieth Williams is liaising with Swindon Council’s crime and disorder team.

Retired recyclers look to the future The enthusiasm of Elsie Hazel Court residents for recycling put many households to shame. The Freshbrook senior citizens were ahead of the game and began recycling long before council collections began in West Swindon. “We’ve been collecting paper and bottles for years,” said Peter Cleary. “Our cleaner Mavis Cooper used to take bottles to the bank in the village centre and we bundled up paper to take to the recycling merchants in the days when they paid for it.” Vera Medlicott, 89, half jokingly said, “I really don’t know how many bottles I bring down for recycling during the week; it seems a lot.” Rhoda Simmonds has decided to save water by only washing up once a day. “All the residents realise the importance of recycling; it’s important for the future of the planet, we must make it better for our grandchildren,” said Barbara Cleary.

The recycled materials are picked up by LEAVES who collect from residential homes in Swindon. The charity is a gardening workers co-operative which employs people recovering from mental health problems. “Trustees and corporate sponsors make regular ‘seeing is believing’ visits to groups in receipt of grants to learn more about them and also find out how the funding has been spent. “It was an inspiration to see how busy the cafe is; there’s a lovely community spirit with people of all ages enjoying a cup of coffee or a meal. There’s tremendous enthusiasm from the users which is great. “It shows money isn’t everything. Community initiatives work successfully because of the volunteers who make it happen.” The Freshbrook cafe had to close for six weeks in December and January for lack of volunteers, but coordinator Tina Mackie and cook Carol Gibbons have decided to combine the cafes at Freshbrook and Toothill centres so that volunteers can work in both to ensure

they stay open. “We reopened at the beginning of February and were immediately busy; people were so keen to see the cafe open,” said Tina. “We’re running the cafes together so that we can ask volunteers to help where they’re needed. “If you would like to become a volunteer, drop in and meet us at one of the community centres.” • The cafes open from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday at Toothill and Wednesday at Freshbrook. Drop in for coffee and cake or for a meal costing under £1.50. The Community Foundation administers grants from the Haydon Wick Fund.
