Award for good police work A policeman has been given an award in recognition of his community work. Beat officer Roger Guy, who patrols the Abbey Meads development received an engraved hip flask at the official opening of a temporary police post on 12 February. In making the presentation, David Thompson of the Haydon Development Company, said the award was the first of its kind and would be made to those who make a significant contribution to the development and growth of the community. Roger, in providing a police presence from the very beginning of the Abbey Meads development, had provided safety and security to the companies working in the area and the people who have moved into the new houses.

GM opt-out bid no excuse to select A school that wants to become Grant Maintained will not become selective says the chair of the governing body. Ridgeway school parents will be asked to vote on whether the school should become self-governing and receive funding directly from the government in a ballot commencing on 7 March. But Chris Gale, the chair of the governing body, says that the move to breakaway from local authority control and become a grant maintained school is purely aimed at protecting the school's sixth form. The governors are worried that the new Swindon authority, which takes over responsibility for education in April 1997, will attempt to close the sixth form at some point in the future. "The Education Service Profile drawn up by Thamesdown clearly states that Sixth Form provision is a significant policy issue for review," said Mrs Gale.

"Ridgeway is the only school in Swindon with a sixth form; we believe it is under great threat. It is just not logical for a local authority to retain a single sixth form when there are two good further education colleges in the town. "We know Swindon does not have any immediate plans to change 16 to 18 education. But it is our responsibility now to put the question to parents who value the sixth form and choose Ridgeway because of it." However Sue Bates, Leader of Thamesdown Council, denies the sixth form could be closed. "Parents have already gone through two ballots and have rejected grant maintained status for Ridgeway School. We have no plans to scrap the sixth form. It makes no sense economically or educationally to do that." Continued on page 2

Sue Bates continued, "I cannot understand why the headteacher and governors are set on forcing another GM vote. The highest priority for the new Swindon authority will be to improve educational standards by working closely with all schools.' Grant Maintained Schools set their own admission arrangements in consultation with the Secretary of State for Education. At present GM secondary schools in Swindon work closely with the local education authority on admissions, but they could apply to select their whole intake at age 11. Pressure on secondary school places from West Swindon families is growing and a GM school could try to select children from specific areas or particular feeder primary schools. However Mrs Gale gave an assurance that Ridgeway had no intention of becoming selective if

parents vote in favour of GM status. "Whilst I'm chair of governors there will be absolutely no selection. None of the governors want the school to become selective. "We want to work closely with Swindon on admissions, and also with other schools. "The GM vote is about a single issue: our need to have the autonomy to keep the sixth form which gives an extra dimension to the school community." Parents will be able to meet governors and representatives from Wiltshire and Thamesdown at 'surgery' meetings at the school on: Monday 4 March, 7pm - 830pm Tuesday 5 March, 6pm - 730pm Thursday 6 March, 5pm - 630pm Mrs Gale will be available in person at the school between 9am and 1030am from 4 to 7 March. The plucky six year old spent most of last year fighting stomach cancer and has come through gruelling chemotherapy treatment and seven operations. Vanessa hopes to be given the all clear to travel after more tests in March. Mum Lisa and dad Rob plan to take Vanessa to Lourdes before going on to Disney Land. When she became ill Vanessa told her parents that she would like to see Mickey Mouse and his mates when she got better. In aid of Little Poppets toddler group

Girls' Brigade Celebrates 1st West Swindon Girls' Brigade recently celebrated its tenth birthday with a party for all the girls, officers and friends of the company. The girls enjoyed lots of games and fun, as well as a birthday tea, including a special tenth birthday cake, complete with GB badge, baked by one of the church members, writes Ann Hall. The company meets at Toothill Church on Wednesdays from 6pm to 830pm. Activities are varied, including this year a walking expedition, verse speaking, baby care, helping at home, Bible stories and learning how the Church works. The company began meeting on 6 September 1985, but was not affiliated until February 1986, hence the party this month. We have seen many changes in ten years, including the formation of Swindon District, with the two other companies in Swindon, as well as

a new uniform this year. The girls now wear a more comfortable activity uniform of sweatshirts, polo shirts and jogging bottoms - no more hats! Forty three girls aged from 5 to 14 are presently members, although girls up to 18 years can join. The captain is the only original member left, but we are still in contact with many of the girls and officers. New members are welcome. New live music centre Freshbrook's community centre is taking a new approach to marketing its licenced bar The Turnpike Club.

On Saturday evenings, the bar will become 'Carriages,' a candle lit venue for live music aimed at the smart set. The first Saturday night live starts on 2 March with R&B and 60s guitar duo 'Gusty.'

Excellent report for school Governors and staff at Brook Field School are delighted with a report on its work after a visit by school inspectors from the Office for Standards in Education in December. The inspection took place in December. The school was found to be providing a good education for its pupils with some outstanding features. 'An environment has been created which is extremely stimulating and is one in which pride in work completed is thoroughly promoted. The management of the school is efficient and effective and very good relationships exist between all members of the school community. The behaviour is excellent.' In addition the report highlights a number of points. • Standards of achievement throughout the school are generally in line with the national expectation or better • The vast majority of pupils achieve appropriately or better for their abilities • The quality of learning and teaching is generally good with some outstanding features • The management of the school is extremely well structured and is efficient and effective. Staff and governors all make important contributions. • The budget is well planned, and good use is made of all resources. The school gives very good value for money.

The report recommends governors, headteacher and staff to maintain the existing high standards and quality of education being provided. The school should take action to ensure acts of collective worship meets statutory requirements, review access to the pond area to ensure health and safety, and ensure there are clear statements in

the prospectus on parent' rights to withdraw pupils from acts of collective worship and from sex education lessons. Chair of governors John Lye expressed great pleasure at the report. "It gives us a strong base to build on for the future and fully supports all the hard work by Roger and his team and the governing body."

A temporary police post has been set up in Abbey Meads as part of the latest crime prevention measures. Located in the Haydon Development Company compound near the Wilcon and Wimpey building sites, the post is a base for local beat officer PC Roger Guy who has patrolled the area since the first residents moved in. The post will be in operation until the Abbey Meads district centre is completed in around five years time when a permanent police station is planned. Divisional commander Eric Tweddle said the opening of the post was a milestone for police work in the area and demonstates the close cooperation with the Haydon Development Company and Thamesdown Borough Council over the last seven years.

Jill Crowhurst writes Here's introducing Busy Fingers, a voluntary run pre-school group, based at the Haydon Centre, aiming to add a little structure into a parent and toddler group. We sing nursery rhymes, do an activity such as painting, sticking or play dought, then there's time for tea or squash and biscuits and for play. We organise an annual barbecue at Lydiard Park and a Christmas party which is most enjoyable. As from 1 March we willbe open four sessions a week: Monday and Friday mornings, lOam till 1130am, Tuesday and Friday afternoons, 1pm till 230pm. These are the most prestigious awards in the children's book world. Both medals are awarded by the Library Association after a national selection process. An Oscar for playing or writing? Corinne Glanville contemplates another Emma Thompson triumph Emma Thompson makes her debut as a screen writer with her adaptation of Sense and Sensibility which has already won her a Golden Globe award. It was quite a challenge for herto create the first big screen version of a Jane Austen novel for 50 years. The story is about Marianne (Kate Winslet) and Elinor, twoofthethree Dashwood daughters. Filming took place in Somerset and Devon where Jane Austen took inspiration for place and people. Hugh Grant plays the shy and inarticulate Edward, and a newcomer, Greg Wise, gallops onto our screen as the dashing Willoughby.

Gallery in a window Lydiard's rare painted window has surprised and delighted thousands of visitors over the years, writes Sarah Finch-Crisp, keeper of Lydiard House. Familiar images from birds, fruit, flowers and animals shine alongside strange mythological creatures and even a rolly polly elephant. The paintings were made by a Netherlands artist Abraham Van Linge whose special sign of a sailing boat can also be spotted on the east window in St Mary's church just behind the house. Van Linge's sense of humour was almost lost on those responsible for cleaning up this window in the early 1950's. An attempt was

Being full of the joys of married life and looking forward to the joys of spring makes the recent cold harsh weather easier to deal with. Unfortunately for our wildlife as well as ourselves, winter is not always the most pleasant of times. Food, warmth and shelter are often difficult to come by. For some, such as the hedgehog, the answer is to go into hibernation, slowing down the heart and metabolic rate so as to conserve energy. The hedgehog lives off stored fats during this period. Others find it all too much and fly off to warmer climates such as the nightingale which prefers to spend its winters in the tropics of West Africa only visiting this country during the summer months. For the rest of us, all year round

residents, we must get through the winter. Foxes grow winter coats to help keep them warm. But others such as members of the Lydiard Watch Group find running around the park a good way to keep warm. Lydiard Watch Group is a junior branch of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. We have lots of fun through learning about the environment. The Group is run by countryside rangers and volunteers and is open to young people from 7 upwards. We are currently looking for a female member to join our team. All you need is enthusiasm, an interest in the countryside, and a free Saturday per month. If you would like to know more please contact Mike on 771419.

The dangers facing fire fighters Sub-officer Perry Payne from Westlea Fire Station reflects on training and tragedies

Last month I was away at the Fire Service College at Moreton in Marsh attending a Road Traffic Accident Instructors course. It was very pleasing for me to see, and report to you, how well this brigade already deals with this type of incident. Our training and extrication techniques are currently to a high standard, even when compared to other brigades nationally. I am looking forward to assisting with the development of our training and good practices still further to help ensure those unfortunate enough to require rescue following a road traffic accident continue to receive the best possible care with a highly skilled extrication. Despite all our training and best efforts we in the fire service will always be unable to operate in a totally safe working environment and must realise our work is not without risk. The danger from fire is real to all and that includes us. It has been well reported that tragically 3 fire-fighters have lost their lives on duty recently. Two, from Wales did so whilst attempting the rescue of a child from a burning house and the third was

Fleur Lombard, from Avon, the first female fire-fighter to be killed on duty. Her death is an irrefutable reminder that women face the same dangers as men in today's fire service. The death of a fellow fire-fighter is always a graphic illustration to all of us, and especially those closest to us, of the risk which lies in our work. At this time our thoughts are with the family and friends of the colleagues we have lost. On an entirely different note, we started the year locally with an extrication of a different kind. With the first call in the county for 1996, we attended 'an address in West Swindon' where a New Year's party was in full swing. Festivities got a tiny bit carried away and we were called to free a young man and woman who, quite innocently they explained, had somehow become handcuffed together. Each to their own but it amused us! So far this year, we've attended 40 fires, 44 false alarms, and 27 emergency special services calls from Westlea Fire Station. No doubt there will be many more. Help us to help you remember the dangers of fire. -

Last month I briefly mentioned a community meeting. I can now give some further details. It will be a joint meeting for Toothill and Freshbrook residents to be held in the Community Suite at the Link Centre starting at 7.30pm on Thursday 21 March. The aim of the evening is to listen to your views and concerns about how your area is policed. Our crime prevention department will also be available to offer advice. I would encourage all residents to attend and look forward to seeing you. Crime in the west The crime scene this month shows the West Swindon area to be relatively quiet as far as burglaries and car crime are concerned. We have been concerned to see a significant number of what I call 'sneak' thefts. Wallets and purses have been stolen by offenders who seem to walk into offices, shops or other public areas and go through jackets, bags or desks. Please do not leave items unattended, particularly when at work. Make sure that you challenge people that you see in your office, shop etc, that you do not know. Legitimate people will not mind being spoken to. The other pattern is of purses being stolen from shopping trolleys, particularly at Asda or Sainsbury's, Bridgemead, so don't leave purses in an open handbag on top of your trolley.

First Abbey Meads break-in In the northern area crime has generally been low since Christmas. We recently recorded the first occupied house burglary in Abbey Meads, committed during the day of Tuesday 6 February when amongst other things a large number of compact discs were taken from a house in Greenwich Close. We have also had several instances and complaints about youngsters congregating around the Haydon Centre and the underpass on Westfield Way. The concerns have been about intimidating behaviour, abuse and damage. We are paying more attention to these areas. But as in the past I would request that parents ensure they know where their children are and discourage them from such behaviour. Those we find in such areas will have letters sent home.

A new project which focusses on youth perspectives on crime is looking for young people to take part. The Film Club, being run by Kerry Porter of the Inspirations Youth Drama Group in conjunction with Youth Justice, involves young people in all aspects of video production from exploring ideas and acting, to filming and editing. A youth opera company is looking for young people aged 9 to 18 who want to sing out. The recently formed Swindon Youth Opera is auditioning for singers to performThe Happy Prince by Malcolm Williamson at the end of October. Formed by Janice Thompson and funded by the Thamesdown Foundation for the Arts, the Opera needs 50 youngsters to take part in the work which will be professionally directed. Come forward youth performers More young people are needed to put on acts at the first West Swindon youth MAD (Music, Dance and Arts) Festival set to take place on 26 May. Already lined up are bands, the Inspiration drama group, film making, sculpture, dance and opera, but the organisers are looking for more performers to show off their skills. Joint organiser Kerry Porter said, "things are really coming together but we want more young people to come forward with their ideas. We would like to hear from teenagers who want to show off their skills by performing at the MAD festi-

What a pity the seats stick out like a sore thumb. Surely a dark stained timber treatment could have been applied - not only to obliterate the graffiti which has already shown itself but to blend in the seating with its natural environment. Also a few litter bins would not go amiss around the seating areas. However despite this I'm pleased that the council has listened to what the residents want and need.

Patients participate Debbie Hobbs The Hawthorn Medical Centre Patient Participation Group is now an established committee which has been running for four months. We meet approximately every six weeks to discuss ways in which we can develop our practise, helping our patients and to improve services to our patients. Local Lives African contrasts We talk to Julia Black who returned to Swindon in late February to have her third baby After 18 months in Africa, England is a whole new world for Jordan and Elliott Black. At 3 and 5 years respectively, they remember little of living in Freshbrook. Putting on hats and coats have become a novelty and they notice that the roads are not bumpy. Their parents Julia and Mike, both members of Freshbrook Church, took them to Africa on missionary work based at Dodoma in central Tanzania. Former Hercules pilot at RAF Lyneham Mike now flies small aircraft in and out of dirt airstrips across Tanzania, carrying medical workers and supplies, missionaries and bibles for Mission Aviation Fellowship. After two bouts of malaria in the early stages of pregnancy, Julia has returned to Swindon and will be joined by Mike before the baby arrives in early April. Julia found herself much busier in Dodoma than she expected Apart from bringing up the children and looking after a guest house in the MAF compound where the pilots, engineers and administration staff and their families live, she's also involved directly with Mike's work by 'flight following.' "The airstrips are often very remote so it's important to know where everybody is," says Julia. "The pilots radio their arrivals and departures, and also regular inflight positions. Numbers attending St Mary's church in Lydiard Park have increased so much over the past year that a second Sunday morning service is to be launched. Vicar, the Revd. Rob Buries, and the congregation are currently discussing the form of the new service. Details, such as the start time, have yet to be finalised but Rob plans that the new service will have a varied and lively format to appeal to all ages. "We want this opportunity to offer different styles of worship," he said. "One of our main aims is to make the gospel message more understandable to people who have no church background." The new service will begin after Easter ... more details next month.

The contrast between comfortable Freshbrook with all the modcons and supermarkets down the road full of goodies and delights, to the amenities found in central Tanzania cannot be greater. "We can get all the basic items we need at the grocery store and in the markets, though I found the meat market difficult. No more shrink wrapped; the whole carcass is cleaved in front of you and a chunk of meat dropped into a bucket. With the heat, blood and flies, it took some weeks to get used to. "Considering how little people have, we're constantly struck by how happy and content they are. The level of poverty is tremendous and it's impossible to help everybody. The MAF approach is to share the gospel, whilst doing something practical to alleviate conditions."

Out to Africa Building worker Barrie Wright from Castle Dore, Freshbrook and Jerry Thornton travel to war torn Rwanda on 6 March for three weeks on behalf of the Swindon Family Church. They will be advising and helping local people construct a building trades skills training centre.
