Phil was stationed in Germany at the time and eventually was doing up to five professional comedy hypnotism shows each month with fire eating and table magic thrown inforgood measure at NATO bases across Europe. I was into dangerous sports and was training as a stunt man when I came across a book on hypnotism for £7 and discovered a talent for putting people under." Shortly after arriving in Freshbrook his wife Heather saw The Link magazine's exclusive April 1993 front page story featuring Anna Kazan who had just become the youngest member of the Magic Circle. Anna, once Nadia Foster from Freshbrook, gave Phil lots of encouragement and contacts in the world of magic and show business. Since then Phil's been taking more and more bookings and, coinciding with his permanent change in career, he has been putting the finishing touches to a new stage show following the Blackpool Magic Convention in February. "Dr Aculard Hemlock presents a unique show, full of horror, illusion and surprises," says Phil. "The parts we've tried have gone down really well, but he needs an assistant to put on the whole performance. "What the good doctor needs is an outgoing personality, someone who is looking for a route into show business. No experience is necessary and the job qualifies for a government training grant for somebody out of work. The rehearsals will be intensive and the person should be ready to travel all over Europe at short notice. Prospect opens doors for visits £1 00,00 still needed to reach fund raising target The long awaited Prospect Hospice is holding two open weekends to say thank you to the people of Swindon. The keys of the purpose built hospice were handed over on Friday 17 February. The public appeal for £2.5 million, launched in July 1993, needs £100,000 and runs until the end of March.

The Hospice on Moormead Road, Wroughton will be open between lOamand 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday 25/26 March and 1/2 April. Appointments for a visit during March can also be made by calling Dorothy Smith on 616134. The first in-patients will be moving to the new building in early April.

Heritage in a hurry Lottery cash bid to restore town's railway pride A heritage centre which will celebrate Swindon's history as an industrial powerhouse during the hey-dey of the railways could be open within eighteen months. The proposal by Thamesdown Council to set up the centre on the site of the old Swindon railway works was offically launched on 10 February. It will cost £4 million to create and relies on major funding from the National Lottery. Leader of the council Tony Mayer said Swindon had been a world leader in the development of railway engines and is now renowned for its growth and future thinking. The Heritage Centre forms part of a plan to regenerate the Swindon works site and will be housed in 54,000 sq. ft. railway workshop dating back to the 1840s. The aim will be to give visitors the experience of what it was like inside the works. Reconstructions of workshops and a railway platform plus displays and high-tech presentations will provide a dynamic and exciting environment to understand the major force behind present day Swindon. Close-by will be a new factory outlet shopping centre, restaurants and other attractions. Borough Leisure Officer John Fisher said the Heritage Centre would add to Swindon's national reputation in the provision of leisure facilities. "This is anopportunity to make a major contribution to the local tourist industry. "1 am confident that the project will be successful. Many things

are working in our favour. The railway workshop is in place. We can show thebenefits of the lottery quickly if our bid is successful." He added local businesses had already been contacted and their support for the bid to the National Lottery would be sought when the proposal is submitted at the end of March. Slow results from complaints A pensioner has become very frustrated by the lack of action on environmental problems in Freshbrook. Fred Fowler, chairman of the West Swindon Friendship Club which meets at Freshbrook Community Centre, has complained to Thamesdown Council about poor levels of lighting and broken equipment at Freshbrook Village Centre and on the major footpath to Crawford Close. He particularly criticizes the use of a mechanical sweeper on the footpath. "The weight of the machine has caused two ruts all the way up the block paving," said Fred. "There are permanent puddles with all this rain we've had. It's very unsafe for pensioners." He has also complained in letters to local councillors about intimidation from teenagers outside Freshbrook shops and buses which park on Worsley Road, rather than using the lay-by at the entrance of the village centre. Bottle message makes many connections Twelve year old Daniel Collict from Featherwood, Westlea had a big surprise in mid-January when a letter arrived from Germany. He did not know anybody in that area but when he opened the envelope he found a note from Sven and Kai Nikias, two boys of the same age, and a cutting from the local newspaper Wilhelmshavener Zeitung featuring their find on a nearby beach. Daniel and his brother Kristopher had both thrown bottles overboard on a cross-channel day trip onl7 December. Their mother Sonia had told them a story of how a beach ball with her name and address had drifted out to sea when she was child and she received a letter from a German boy who had been on holiday in Holland. It took twenty-eight days for Daniel bottle to float up the North Sea and was only washed ashore because of severe storms off north Germany. "I couldn't believe it," said Greendown student Daniel. "They wrote to me in English and I wrote back telling them about my interests. I also told them that my grandmother is German."

A raffle to raise £1,000 towards an outdoor education and play structure in the grounds of Brook Field School has been so well received by parents and friends of the school that a further500 rafflebooks have been printed. The raffle sponsored by West Swindon's long established mortgage broker Mansfield Begbie Associates and launched in last month's Link magazine sold out within two weeks, six weeks before the draw takes place on 17 March. Another 500 books worth £1 each have been printed to raise more money towards the project. Over the last four years parents and volunteers have been workingon landscaping, pathand pond making projects with grant aid and donations. Over 400 trees have been planted. The structure will cost £9,000 which will have to be raised by the school. Mansfield Begbie Associates has donated £450 worth in prizes The first prize is £250 cash, the second is £150 worth of WHSmith vouchers and there are five runners up Early Learning Centre vouchers worth £10.

New school start at last After several years campaigning for a new school in Haydon Wick, Wiltshire County Council has at last started to build one to serve Haydon Wick and the first stage of the Northern Development at Abbey Meads writes Chairman of GovernorsTony Mayer. The new primary school, to be known asHaydonleigh School will provide for both infants and juniors with a target size of 240 pupils. The school is sited off Haydon Court Drive close to Safeway. The playing field has been completed with the installation of land drains and reseeding; work is now well underway on the school building. The school will be open for its first pupils in September 1995. In order to get everything in place forthe school opening, a temporary governing body has been set up to appoint a head teacher. The County Council will need to rezone Haydon Wick catchment areas. It is hoped that there will be some public consultation to avoid the anomalies which presently exist with Greenmeadow, Haydon Wick, Rodbourne and Moredon schools catchments. The governors, together with the head, have much to do and face a real challenge in literally building up the school and setting its policy for the future. They are keen to hear from prospective parents who may wish to join the governing body at this exciting time in Haydonleigh School's development. Spring is Sprung

Swinging drinkers Golfers interested in a drink and the occasional game won't go amiss from a visit to The Harvester at the West Swindon Centre. The Harvester Golf Society currently has a membership of forty players who enjoy golf days out on courses as far away as Clovelly and Tewkesbury. Eight outings are organised annually, including two specifically for new members. Footballer Vinnie Jones and darts ace Bob Anderson have guested at days out. Society members take part in charity fundraising events and

over the last four years £1,200 has been raised for local charities like the Koalas special needs nursery and the Swindon Industrial Therapy Organisation. Membership of the Harvester Golf Society is full at present but there are often guest vacancies on days out. To make contact with club members, drop into the weekly Tuesday social evening at the pub.

Our guided tour of the attics planned for 7 March sold out within half an hour of opening sales on 1 February. Unfortunately we have to limit numbers to 20 visitors because of the restricted space and safety requirements. Hopefully we can satisfy demand with future tours. Gloomy weather and knee deep mud did nothing to dampen spirits of the 6,000 people who turned up to the Great Western Community Forest Chinese New Year tree plant at Shaw Tip on 5 February. They planted 5,800 trees, the beginnings of a facility which will develop and mature over the next fifty years. Large quantities of noodles prepared by the Swindon Chinese Community were consumed to confer good-luck in the year of the pig. Writing this article in mid-February am I being optimistic in thinking thatSpring has nearly arrived? The snowdrops have flowered and the daffodils are starting to bloom. A blackbird has youngin its nest already, and sightings of picnicking families have also occurred, umbrellas at the ready! Touching wood, we seem to have survived the winter's gales with very little damage. Tree planting is going on now, round the back of the walled garden, forming a new avenue of lime trees as part of the historical landscape restoration plan. By the time you read this the Wootton Bassett Army Cadets will have visited us to help with conservation work in the park by removing rodent (rabbit) guards from mature trees and clearing litter from the copses in the farmland area. Thanks to them for their help. We will also have had the Wildlife Action Dayfor Wiltshire Watch Groups being organised by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. We expect a very good turn out for this, certainly there are a large number of stalls and environmental activities happening. Don't forget that we have a Watch Group here at Lydiard for children from 7 upwards involving them in caring about wildlife and the environment, whilst developing their awareness and understanding. They also take part in conservation tasks. The next meeting of the Lydiard Watch Group is on Saturday 11 March. Meet at lO.l5amat the stables near to the house. The cost is 50p and for this meeting wellington boots would be advisable. For further details contact the rangers Mike Williams or Mike Newton at the park. There is also our 'Maps made Easy' event at 2pm on Sunday 12 March. Learn how to read a map to enjoy the countryside even more. The cost is £1, meeting at the Visitor Centre and is suitable for the disabled.

Busy fingered pupils clipped over 70,000 used stamps which were recently handed over to association representative Granville Grey as part of a special assembly at the school. The 1st Swindon Sea Scouts who meet at the Scout Hall in The Brow, Haydon Wick are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year with a series of special events launched at a unified Thanksgiving Service at the Haydon Centre on Sunday 19 February. "We'd really like ex Sea Scouts and their parents to get in touch and take part in the activities," said group secretary Tony Kilburn. "We've met at three locations around Swindon and it would be lovely to see some old friends." Despite other distractions, sea scouting continues to be popular with young people and the group currently boasts 140 members. Organisers are hoping the year will be plain sailing and are planning a big day out at Lydiard Park injune. Call for cycle barrier at Shaw danger spot Simon O'Toole's heart stopped for bike on the Shaw Ridge to Shaw a minute at PMH on 10 February Centre footpath/cycle route, after he had been knocked off his where it crosses Ramleaze Drive. David is pressing local councillors for action before there is a fatality, rather than afterwards.

He wanted Cathy to come with him to counselling - and after initially saying she didn't want anyone to know about "their" private lives - and that there wasn't a relationship to save she went because she didn't know what else to do.

The Counsellor encouraged Bob and Cathy to express their feelings about the situation to each other. It wasn't until Bob broke down in tears that Cathy really saw the depth of Bob's feelings - his depression and feelings of failure. That was the turning point - Bob realised that he had to support Cathy by doing more round the house - and Cathy was able to let go of her resentments and encourage him. Bob re-gained his self respect and renewed his job hunt. The situation was unchanged - but the relationship was "back on track". The difference in their lives was that they were talking to each other and thinking about each other's feelings saying how they felt rather than bottling things up. Bob and Cathy realised they needed help - and did something about it. Cathy and Bob met on a blind date when he was in the army, stationed abroad and she was working as a full time secretary. They instantly "clicked" - sharing the same sense of humour and both loving the cinema and country pubs. In the first week of their romance they saw each other every day. When Bob returned overseas he wrote every week; two years later they married. Bob left the army to become a mechanic, they bought a flat and life was wonderful - until Bob lost his job. He searched for work - but couldn't seem to find anything permanent and started to spend more and more time with friends -often down in the pub. Cathy returned after a full-days work to find washing up still in the sink and silently fumed and blamed Bob for things being so hard. Bob became increasingly depressed. He was devastated by the loss of his successfularmy career and therespect he had from colleagues. Hefelt worthless because Cathy had a job, while he couldn't find anything that lasted. For two years Cathy's anger and Bob's feeling of failure continued never put into words by either of them. They no longer laughed or talked together; sex went out of the window. Valentines's Day was the turning point. They didn't exchange Valentine's Cards - and Bob decided their relationship had reached crisis point they weren't even talking to each other anymore. Bob decided having a third party to talk to - who wasn't "in" the situation would help and phoned his local Relate Centre. After two sessions on his own (Bob didn't tell Cathy he was going to counselling) he felt he'd begun to work through the problem, and could understand Cathy's feelings as he had taken out his feelings of frustrations and failure on her.

Instead of our usual meeting in January we went to the Bristol Hippodrome toseePickwick. SirHarry Secombe was ill and his understudy Kevin AJ Ranson played the title role. He was excellent and we all thoroughly enjoyed his performance. Having accumulated dozens of knitted squares and jumpers we got together one evening to sew them all together. It's amazing how much can be achieved in a short time by collective effort. We made a huge blanket and several jumpers for the Rwanda Appeal.

It's February and time for our ACM. We've had a very busy, interesting and stimulating year with discussions on organ donations, action on pornography and support for rural carers. It's been thought provoking, funny and educational. What will 1995 bring? The speaker at our meeting on 15 March will be Stephen Beale on Talking Newspapers for the Blind. We meet in the Community Room at Toothill School at 730pm on the third Wednesday of each month. If you would like further information phone 495520

LocalLives Nine and a half days in the sun Whilst the focus of the world has moved on from Romania, a band of volunteers continues to collect donations for the poor and the needy. Julian Leggett, Manager of the West Swindon Centre and member of Mission Romania, describes a trip last year with aid donated by the people of Swindon. Saturday 10 September, 2pm found the four travellers from Mission Romania, Dawn, Dave, Eric and myself, together with their families at the warehouse loaned for storage by Sun Alliance. Food and luggage packed into the transit, passports and international driving licenses checked and off we go heading for Ramsgate and the 7.30pm ferry to Dunkirk. A 38 tonne truck, full of clothing, typewriters, medical equipment, food, bikes, knitting and sewing machines and bedding had been loaded and despatched the day before. We would see it next at the German/Austrian border. (We hoped)

Monday 12th Having met the truck as planned we motored on into Hungary, finally crossing into Romania during the early morning. Sunrise in Hungary is something not to be forgotten. Flat countryside, little pollution and only a touch of ground mist meant that we saw it all as the sun came up. Cereal and tinned hamburgers for breakfast. (Not on the same plate at the same time!) Lunch however was not so easy. We had no Romanian Lei and Bureau de Change are few and far between in Romania. We tried a bank in Huedin and were asked if we knew the exchange rate! If only we weren't honest.
