Local youngsters bullied by TV presenter Kilroy A group of West Swindon teenagers have slammed television presenter Robert Kilroy Silk after they were victims of his interview technique on his 9 February morning show about bullying. They claim Kilroy set them up to take the blame for bullying and ignored the fact that most of them had also been victims. The WiltshireYouthService was asked by Kilroy Television if some young people would be willing to appear in a studio discussion. Local youth worker Carl Bowen asked some teenagers and they agreed. Each youngster had a 15 to 30 minute telephone conversation with Julian Mears, the programme's AssistantProducer, who said the studio discussion would be open and balanced, without judgements or condemnation. The same assurances were given shortly before the recordingstarted. But once 'on-air' the six teenagers quickly realised that they were being manipulated byKilmy. 'Doing our bit' in March Organisers of Swindon's big effort to help cancer charities want local groups, clubs and pub goers to get behind their efforts in March. A number of big events like a gala dinner and auction, a helium balloon race and a celebrity go-kart challenge are being organised, but could you run an event which involves the localcommurntyin some way to help Swindon's Propect Foundation, C.A.L.M. and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund? Become a fireman/women for a day The staff at Westlea Fire Station and the Link magazine have got together to raise cash for Comic Relief. If you've ever dreamt of finding out what it's like to be a fireman, here's your chance. You will spend a day doing exactly what the fire crews do. • Tour of the station • Try out some of the equipment in a training exercise such as cutting up cars to extricate an accident victim • Explore the special smoke training house at the station in full breathing equipment, • And of course, if there's an emergency call out, you'll go with them. Music, Light and Flight set for summer spectacular A weekend of spectacular family entertainment in West Swindon is being planned for the August bank holiday. The Wiltshire Festival at Lydiard Park over 27 to 30 August will feature live concerts, hot air balloons and a range of activities which will appeal to everybody, from aerial displays and fireworks to craft and trade displays. Following last year's balloon only event, the Wiltshire Festival will not only offer more activities appealing to all ages and interests, the festival will also raise money for good causes. This year the NationalSodety for the Protection of Cruelty to Children's new centre for abused children in Swindon has been been selected to receive the proceeds. The Wiltshire Festival is being jointly sponsored by West Swindon based company Motorola Mobile Communications at BlagmvelndustrialEstateand GWRFMin association with Thamesdown Council. The organiser will be leading event producer Rod Gunner, the man behind several of the country's spectacular events such as 'Symphony for the Spire' in aid of Salisbury Cathedral and 'Fanfare of A New World' in Liverpool to celebrate the return of the Tall Ships and the Grand Regatta Columbus. He said his aim was to make the Wiltshire Festival the biggest event in the South of England. 'The first

festivalwfflbe spectacular in its own right, but over the next three to five years, our aim will be to make Lydiard Park the focus of national attention. "We plan to have 100 hot air balloons flying every day, both out of and into the park, and arena attractions taking place every half an hour." To launch the festival on Friday 27 August will be a gala opening concert in front of Lydiard House featuring the London Philharmonic Orchestra accompanied by a light show and fireworks. The following two evenings will feature rock bands and a concert of soul music with a balloon night glow and a fireworks grand finale on Bank Holiday Monday.

No clash above Swindon Organisers of the Bank Holiday Great Warbinis display at Wroughton airfield two miles to the south of Lydiard were reported to be unhappy about balloons goingup. The successful event last year featured historic war planes and high speed modem jets. Howevera spokeswoman forRod Gunner's office said the balloons fly in the early morning and in the evening whilst the aeroplane displays take place during the middle of the day. She said the Civil Aviation Authority, which licenses air events, was happy with the arrangements.

Year 5 and 6 children at Oliver Tomkins Junior School have been studyingi 5th Century Spain and the discovery of the orient.' The class gave a dramatic presentation to parents. Ten year old Jennifer Pike describes the project. Oliver Tomkins Junior School presented a fabulous drama organised by the classes taught by Mrs Compson, Mrs Daniels and Miss Storey. We also had a lot of help from Mr Tim Noble from Greendown School. The main scenes were filled with superbly spoken lines and stunning

costumes. The actors explained and made important bits so life-like you could, with a little imagination, feel as though you lived in those times. It was rounded off at the end by one of the Spanish soldiers remembering about the battles. Afterwards food was served to taste what it like 500 years ago.

PB PLUMBING SERVICES Trees planted for the future Tree planting appeared on the curriculum for two days at Freshbrook School during early February. With the help of teachers, classroom assistants and a hard working band of parent helpers, every one of the 539 children planted a tree with its own personalised tag. Pupil Greg Allen explained that all the children were able to design their own tags. "We drew pictures a label and wrote the name we had given our tree. Then we covered it with clear tape to protect the drawing." Zina Ionnou, the teacher who coordinated the project, said that each class came out on to the school field to plant their tree. "At this stage they are very small, but with care the trees will make a small woodland. "Many children took their parents to see 'their' personalised tree after school. I'm sure they will survive because the children will be looking after them." The trees will be paid for over a number of years by the Forestry Commission. The school will re-

Cat owner found through Link Sheila Mitchell writes: Due to the interest and concern of Link readers the owner of our 'feline lodger' mentioned in the article entitled 'Lost a Cat?' in the February edition has been found. Chubby's owner has been found but many cats and other pets are not so fortunate, especially in these times of recession when some owners find that they can't afford to feed and care for their pets. Some owners even abandon their pets when they move leaving them to fend for themselves, sometimes because they cannot take them to temporary accommodation. For this reason the population of 'stray cats on our stieets is bound to increase. The Cat Protection League is a voluntary organisation which helps to find homes for kittens and cats and helps with a variety of issues related to our feline friends. Ceramart opens at Shaw Centre The empty shop unit at Shaw Village Centre opens on 1 March offeringan exciting range of items for the householder and gardener. It's being opened by Peter Kelly from Freshbrook who wants to develop his successful wholesale business supplying ceramic pots and plants to public buildings. On display will be a range of ceramic pots and ornamental ironrnongery for displays in the home and garden. They can be used to show off cut, dried and artificial flowers, and also shrubs and bedding plants on the patio and around the garden. To compliment the display items, Ceramart will stock plants of all kinds, including bedding plants when in season. Peter says his aim is to use his experience to provide a personal service to those who want to give character to their homes. Moving into the shop unit will provide both his commercial and now domestic customers the chance to see the fine pieces he has to offer.

Shaw youngsters net sponsorship deal A local junior football team has just scored a sponsorship deal with Swindon Renault dealer DTM on Great Western Way. The players of Shaw FC, based at Brook Field School, now proudly display the DTM logo on their shirts in their games against other teams in the Mid Wiltshire area. Although this is the first league season for the under lOs, they have consistently held the second place position.

The first meeting of 1993 was held on our new hail and it was great! Brenda Pope gave us a talkand slide show on Denman College in Oxfordshire which was acquired by the WI in 1948. It has been completely renovated and now runs lots of courses, ranging from sugarcraft to woodwork. The bedrooms have been decorated by different WIs, so the slides showed a variety of styles. We finished the evening chatting over tea and biscuits. On 15 March, Mr Rummins will give us a talk and slide show on local history. It should be very interesting, the slides will show us a difference in the surrounding areas and I doubt we'll recognise the places. If you'd like to join us, please come along. Don't buy sugary nightime drinks says dentist Local dentist Brendan Ball has welcomed the recent campaign to persuade supermarkets to remove sweets from supermarket check outs. He is also concerned about 'nightime drinks' laced with sugar featured in television advertisements helping babies go to sleep. Brendan has written to BBC TV presenter EstherRa ntzen asking her to expose the harm sugar does to young teeth, along the lines of the effective 'That's Life' programme on so-called children's health drinks several years ago. "I find it very frustrating that the amount of money available for health promotion is miniscule compared to the huge budgets used by the sugar industry to push their products," said Brendan. "As dentists we are not officially allowed to point out that some foods can be harmful."

The Swindon Health Authorityis trying to see how far it is possible to take into account local people's views when planning services. It's now your opportunity to be part of this discussion. Earlier this century TB often meant long hospital stays and premature death. In the last 40 years, the number of cases has decreased tenfold as a result of immunisation and effective drug treatments. Once again, though, the number of cases is increasing-although this can vary around the country. In particular TBis increasingly prevalentamongst those who are HIV positive - whose natural immune system, the ability to fight infections, may be impaired. So who is at risk today? At present all children in Swindon are immunised against TB at school. Swindon's Director of Public Health confirms that this will continue to be the case and that no additional measures are required for the general public's safety. However, certain groups are considered to be more 'at risk'. Immigrants from areas where TB is particularly prevalent (India, Asia, Central and South America) are screened on entry to UK. Similarly, travellers to theseareas should check they have themselves been vaccinated. Any contacts of confirmed cases are routinely traced, tested and given any appropriate treatment. In this way the spread of the disease is contained. For further advice contact your local GP surgery or Health Visitor.

The annual NHS dentistry costs £1.4 billion, of which the Government pays only £0.8 billion, the rest comes frompatient fees. In 1992, the consumer spent £4 billion on confectionery alone. This does not include the purchase of foods with added sugar. "Parents are under pressure from their children and the marketing of sugar products responds to this. In supermarkets they have to cope with demands forsweets," said Brendan. "At night, if a baby won't settle,a TV advertisement showing a lovely contented baby going to sleep under the influence of a nightime drink has a powerful message. "The sugar producers don't care about the health risks, the marketingof sweets and nightime drinks is cynically calculated to increase their profits. "The bugs in your mouth don't give a damn where the carbohydrate come from. The longer carbohydrates stay in the mouth, the more the action of the decaying acids on the tooth enamel." A child with emerging teeth going to sleep after a sugary night time drink is guaranteed to have decay when he or she gets much older. Dentists all too often see the unusual sight of rotting top front teeth, often decayed as they breakthrough.

Children withblackened stumps can be teased and can suffer psychologidally. "I appeal to parents to resist the demands of their children for more sugar," said Brendan. "They have been conditioned to want sugar. Theirneed s can be changed, if you're willing to think about their dental health. Children don't usually like a visit to the dentist. We would prefer not see them in pain." The Brendan Ball dental practice is continuing to treat free children under the NHS.

New lambs for spring There are new lambs galore to be fed and stroked at Southleaze Sheep Farm, on the edge of West Swindon. The farm reopens on 1 March after a winter break and will be open Thursday to Monday between 2.30pm and 530pm during March and April only. Calling cricketers to the field Cricketers looking for a team have the choice of two clubs closeby. Disposable nappies are only disposable once they go in the bin. After that they go on festering underground for hundreds of yea rs,creating huge environmental and health problems. Nine out of 10 nappy changes features a so-called disposable. Around 3 billion equal to 17,000 juggernaut lorryloads end up in landfill waste tips. Yet none are recyclable or even compositable. Although the annual UK market of disposables is worth£477 million, the Department of Environment says, at one-thirtieth of all household waste, they form too small a proportion of waste to be concerned about. The decomposing human waste in the nappies represents a health hazard and is a major cause of methane gas in the tips. The cost of pumping off the gas is huge. Britain is one of the biggest users of disposable nappies in the world. About 1,000 nappies can be made per tree trunk. About 3 million trees are consumed each year in production for the British market alone. A solution to polluting the enviroment is the invention of 'Indisposables.' They are all cotton and in a recent test for a Swedish magazine, they came out on top for softness, comfort, fit and ability to stop leakages. -

Unlike terry towel nappies, there is no folding or pinning. Indisposables are shaped, contain an absorbent filling and close with a refixable Velcro tab. What's more, they are cheaper than so-called disposables. From birth to toilet training, a baby will wear around 5,500 nappies. The cost of disposables will be around £900. The cost of Indisposables, including home laundering, is £380. These costs are those paid directly by the user. The cost to the environment is of course much greater. EN TENDENCiES Rubbish : A Problem that won't go away Thamesdown Council's Recycling Officer Anne Billingham asks you to take an interest

We throw away 20 million tonnes of rubbish from our households every year in the UK. That's I tonne for each household. For most of us, once our rubbish has left our homes, it is out of sight and out of mind. But when rubbish is thrown away it doesn't really go away. It just goes somewhere else! In 1992, 94% of Thamesdown's household rubbish ended up in Chapel Farm landfill site, Blunsdon where it rots down generating methane gas and noxious liquids. Approximately 6% was recycled. In 1990 the Government set a national target to recycle25% of household waste by 2000. This is a massive increase on the amount we manage at the moment. The Environment Protection Act 1990 requires all local authorities which collect waste to write a Recycling Plan setting out how they intend to recycle waste from homes in the area. Thamesdown Borough Council's Draft Recycling Plan has just received the approval of the Department of Environment and will be published in full and be available for inspection by end of March. The plan covers the period 19921995 and comprises eleven elements: 1. Introduction of 12 Neighbourhood Recycling sites across Thamesdown 2. Expansion of the bottle bank scheme to 35 sites* 3. Offer all schools, businesses and sports /community centres can recycling opportunities 4. Conduct a central composting trial 5. Facilitate 'home' composting 6. Introduce house to house collection of recyclables, including plastic 7. Promote recycling in the workplace and expand office waste paper service. 8. Support new education and voluntary sector initiatives 9. Provide advice and information on recycling 10.Investigate recycling of commercialand industrial waste 11.Investigate the recovery and disposalof hazardous household waste For a copy of the plan contact the Recycling Officer, Thamesdown Borough Council, Civic Offices. should opt-out of Wiltshire County Council control after a parent petition in November calling for the vote. The result announced on 8 February showed that just 52% of parents had sent their voting papers back to the Electeral Reform Society who conducted the ballot, 2% more than the required number for the vote to be declared valid. 299 voted in favour of the school going Grant Maintained but 312 voted against the idea. The Greendown result means that parents at four Swindon schools where grant maintained status ballots have taken place have decided to go against the recommendation of their school governors and to stay under the Wiltshire wing. Six schools in other parts of the county have already broken away or have voted to do so. Several secondary schools in the town have agreed to

Bradon Forest School together with the Parent Teacher Association have been raising money through many projects for a new school mini bus, which will benefit all the pupils. The target has almost been met. To celebrate this achievement and also to raise the last few pounds the Parent Teacher Association are organising a Family Barn Dance on 19 March. Getting the body to deal with pain and stress People suffering chronic pain and stress are finding relief at the hands of local reflexologist Mary Walker. Although she spends her time manipulating other people's feet, she does not see soles and toes. To her, they are different parts of the body. The photograph taken from the security video of James Bulgar walking out of the Mothercare shop in Liverpool with an older boy should be a poignant reminder to all parents of the vulnerability of our small children and their need for proper protection by their parents. However, despite a number of incidents of children wandering away or being taken by strangers parents still seem to reluctant to put their small children in reins. At least when a child is on reins parents have more control over their movements, but seldom does one see reins these days. Instead one sees small childrenand toddlers wanderingafter their parents in busy crowded streets, shops and car parks. It is a miracle that more small children are not injured. Indeed it is interesting to note that many of the same parents take more time and trouble over the security of their motor vehicle than they do about

the safety of their most valuable possession - their child. Perhaps it is time that the PR people people got together and devised an advertising campaign to enhance the image of reins then maybe, there would be fewer cases of children getting lost or injured. Relatives for relatives

Police defend action to catch dealers A police operation to catch drug dealers operating around the Link Centre on 29 January has been criticised by teenagers and parents as designed to frighten young people rather than catch the pushers. But Swindon police say they were trying to catch drug and drink dealers and acting to prevent public disorder. Ice skaters at the regular Friday disco session werebarred fmmleaving the Link Centre bya cordon of 15 policemen and women, and a police dog, by the libraryentrance. Around 150 teenagers from l2 years upwards were detained whilst police searched some of them. One teenager, who was unwilling to be named, questioned the police action. "Everybody coming out of the Link was held back. Some of the younger ones had parents waiting for them and some people missed the bus home which must have put them in danger. I don't think it was very good public relations exercise." Another teenager said that press reports of gang warfare was nonsense. He acknowledged that young people gather outside the Link Centre and the number grows before and after the ice skating sessions. A parent said that she was very concerned about the focus of the police action. "Nobody condones drug dealing, but I feel that if the police are looking for dealers, then surveillance and arrest is appropriate. Stopping all the young people coming out of the Link Centre seems heavy handed and designed to frighten, rather than to catch the guilty individuals." Link Centre coordinator Roger Byrne said young people gathering in the car park by the library created

an intimidating prescence for users of the centre. "There have been rumours of drug dealing in the area and we have a regular problem with intoxicated teenagers, mainly on a Friday evening. Women walking into and leaving the centre feel very uncomfortable passing through a largely male gathering of young people. There is also an increasing level of vandalism inside and outside the Centre, but as usual it's a very small number of people spoiling things for the majority." Sergeant Terry Cuss of the Swindon Police North sub-division said his group had been keeping any eye on the Link Centre for a week and had become aware that public disturbance might take place on the Friday evening, "Wehavealsoheard the rumours about drug dealing and people selling alcohol to youngsters in the car park. We heard that some kind of gang confrontation was planned and our intention was to prevent this as well as identify dealers. The officers were briefed to deal with the young people sensitively and I apologise for any distressed caused." Sgt. Cuss said the police would continue their prescence around the Centre to deter dealers. The Link has heard reports of new faces appearing amongst the teenagers hanging around local village centres since the police action.

Ecumenical Parish of West Swindon & The Lydiards

A Month in Romania Edward Glennie from Westlea works for the Water Research Centre at Blagrove Industrial Estate. He has recently returned from Romania, where he was a member of a team led by Swindon based engineering company Haicrow which is advising the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development A month in Romania has left me with many impressions. We may think of Romania as a poor country, and so it is in some ways. But this is not the whole picture, as I will try to explain. Romanians are very conscious and proud of their history. The Romans called the country 'Dada felice' (happy Dada). Their influence remains in the language, which is similar to Latin.

Like many eastern European countries, Romania has been part of different empires at different times; the Ottoman (Turkish) empire, the Austro-Hungarian empire, and recently the Soviet empire. It became an independent country about 100 years ago, and had to use its wits to survive through two World Wars. Under the Communist governments from 1945, Romania was industrialised. Today it refines oil, makes locomotives and has chemical,steeland paper industries. There are several pig farms, each with 100,000 pigs!

Manyof these industrial processes are now old, and one of the country's priorities is to make up for the 1980s when President Ceaucescu cut Romania off from the West. He wanted money to invest in his grandiose building projects in the capital, Bucharest, and therefore starved the industries of money for investment. At the same time life became hard; electricity supplies became unreliable, district heating was inadequate and people were required to 'volunteer' for extra weekend work. This led to the 1989 revolution. Romania now has a democratic government, but life is still hard for many. Prices have risen faster than incomes and a typical family spends more than half its income on food. In some areas water and heating have been off for days during the winter. Economists believe that 1993 will be a difficult year, and that in 1994 the standard of life will start to improve. I found my Romanian colleagues very pleasant to work with; for example our team of three interpreters, all of them expert scientists in their own right; ourdriver, who kept a rather unreliable Dacia car on the road with the minimum of fuss; our secretary, a graduate in Romanian literature who spoke several languages and who made appointments for us, translated and generally kept everyone in order. I listened to some wonderful music, from a young Romanian piano soloist and from an amateur choir. Musical talent seems to flourish in Romania. I returned with three long playing records, though cassettes and CDs are not yet available. Romania has the potential to be a wonderful holiday area. It has part

of the Black Sea coast, the Danube delta with its wildlife, fortified monasteries from the 16th century full of wall paintings and the Carpathian mountains for skiing and climbing I returned from Romania feeling that Ihad been enriched. Perhaps in the future more and more British people will be able to enjoy what it has to offer.
