(0793) 534907 & 513705 Ricky Midwinter It is with sadness that we have to record the untimely death of Ricky Midwinter, West Swindon's longest serving councillor, on Sunday 16 February, at the age of 34. Ricky announced on this front page in January that he would not contest his seat onThamesdown Council in the May local government elections. He had held it since it was created in 1981 when the 'western expansion' was transfened from North Wilts, first as a councillor for the whole of the area and then as one of the representatives for Toothill, Westlea, Shaw and Sparcells. He had been so looking forward to repaying the support of his wife May during his years of public involvement, when she was looking after their two young children. The prospects offered by promotion at work with Emerson Electric also filled him with excitement. The recurrence in early February of the cancer that he had successfully fought off two years ago was a cruel blow. Many people have contributed to the development of our young community, but very few will be remembered for influencing and directing how the area has evolved. Ricky is one of them. As a new councillor in the early 1980s, his activities were sometimes like a bull in a china shop. But it was what the area needed; he got things done. He became the 'voice' which the community did not have, campaigning for better social, health and education facilities which were due to be provided - but not soon enough as far as he was concerned. He sometimes felt weighed down by the demands of individuals who turned to him for help, often in situations where he could not do a lot to resolve their problems. The increasing number of homeless families, housebound people and others in financial difficulties left him at times in despair. Ricky neverlost the passion he felt for his area orhis compassion for the people of West Swindon. His strong personal following was translated at the ballot box when voters of different political persuasions returned him to the council at three local elections. Ricky Midwinter was special to West Swindon. His many friends will be greatly saddened by his passing. He leaves his wife May, Darren, 12, and Phillippa, 9. Remembering Ricky. Tributes on page 3.

Farewell to a fighter Shaw's Holy Trinity Church was packed on Wednesday 26 February for the funeral of Ricky Midwinter. It was conductedbyRicky's good friend Rev. Ian Handscomb, and Rev. Helen Drummond, members of the West Swindon Ecumenical team. Rev. Handscomb spoke of Ricky's great influence in so many areas of West Swindon's develop-

mentand his concern with the small issues as well the big projects. Those gathered to say farewell sang the hymn chosen by Ricky, 'All things bright and beautiful,' because he believed itis a beautiful world.

Free dessert raises cash Pizza Hut at Shaw Ridge Leisure Park combined their Valentines Day celebrations with an effort to help the Wootton Bassett Albania Appeal. Promotions manager Maureen Connell read about the appeal on the front page of the February Link magazine and decided that Pizza Hut could help out as well. "We expected a large aumber of people on Valentine's Day so we created a new dessert called 'Lover's Delight' and offered it to customers flee or charge. Of course they had to make a donation to the appeal, and lots who were too full to have dessert contributed as well." Remembering Ricky From Councillor Sue Bates It would be too easy in writing this tribute to Ricky to be sad. I want to relay the happiness thatRicky gave to so many in West Swindon. Yes we will miss him, there is no doubtabout that He won the hearts of many of us, and those who did not agree with Rick's ideas, principles and methods will all agree that everything he did, he did for his 'area', West Swindon. There is no need for a monument - the facilities in the area themselves are record enough of his achievements. Just lately Rick was very concerned about the homeless problemwlthlnSwindon. Even though his health was poor his heart was still in the right place. Rick was a persons person - he loved people, he loved getting problems solved for his constituents, no matter how small the difficulty. I could say that Rick sometimes got too involved with the problems relating to his council work - but that just reflected his total commitment to his 'extended family' -his residents. Ricky did his job as a local councillor with passion - he was and will always remain an example to all who follow him. I have known Rick as a friend for twelve years. I consider I have been privileged during that time, he was a big guy with a big heart. West Swindon has lost a friend, a champion forresidents rights and needs. We'll miss him- but we will remember him with affection for all the good, positive things he achieved on our behalf in such a short life. On behalf of West Swindon say 'Thank you Ricky" - and promise thatallhe strove forwfflnotbe lost.

From Neil Griffiths, Headteacher, Westlea School It was with great sorrow that we listened and learned of theuntimely death of Ricky Midwinter from his wife May who bravely called into the school the following day and shared her sad news. Initial feelings of great shock could only be mixed with great pride at having known Ricky as a colleague and dear friend. Ricky had been a Governor of WestleaSchoolsinceitopened nine years ago and from the outset had a vision of how a school should be. Much of what you see today is a reflection of his determination, great insight and most of all his

love for people and his never-ending mission to ensure that their quality of life was good and fair. Iwas greatly privileged to spend an hour alone with Ricky the day before his death. I cannot express how touched I was by his bravery and courage. True to Ricky's nature, even then he was thinking of others and not himself, talking of his family, friends and the school. Indeed we recalled our days at a Primary School together when we were nineyears old and he laughed through his pain. There are occasions in life when you realise that you have been very fortunate to share a friendship with someone. I will always remember

In these time, when corrupting forces of prejudice, greed, hatred, man's cruelty to his fellows, and his repeated failure of love, justice and understanding, the loss of Ricky is something irreplaceable. I was fortunate to have been associated with him at the time when he helped to organise a General Practice in Toothil, when there was a need for a local GP. I saw him as a man who was never self-centred. His constant striving to improve and advance living standards of the people around him was unforgettable. In this consumerorientated, materialistic world, when people are degraded, deprived and denied the basic necessities of life, he stood up

for a united, harmonious world, with greater justice for everyone, and prospects for all. He upheld the ideas of the late President John F Kennedy, who once said 'As long as one man is in bondage, anywhere in the world, mankind cannot claim he enjoys real freedom'. I consider myself fortunate to have know a man of this calibre. Hewlilbegreatly missed,notonly as a valued colleague, but also as a dear and trusted friend.

He had the purpose and passion to pursue just causes in the face of often high and narrow minded opposition. He had the courage to question, even the role of art, where others were cowed before a false authority. He dared to support projects, like ours, at a time when other politicians and planners only had eyes for a quick buck or newness for newness sake. Ricky had vision, imagination, compassion and an understanding of what really was good for gmwingchildrenandhard-pressed grownups. West Swindon can count itself fortunate that Ricky chose to represent it. He will be missed but remembered for his good work Bless him.

From Sheila Mitchell, Moresby Close, Westlea I was shocked and saddened to learn about the recent death of the local councillor Ricky Midwinter. Despite illness he worked sohani for the good of the residents of West Swindon and the tangible evidence of his efforts is much in evidence in our community. I would hope that other readers might join with me in expressing a wish that the local council may, in the near future, pay tribute to Ricky Midwinter by naming one of the West Swindon projects after him, perhaps the new Health Centre, as a lasting memorial. My sincere condolences go to his wife and young family. We have lost a good man who strove to make West Swindon a pleasant place to live. The richness of life in West Swindon is poorer today through his demise.

Ricky as one of these special people. Our hearts go out to May, Phillippa and Darren and all his family who will, I know, be as proud of him as we were. My final words to Ricky were regarding his funeral which he hoped might be at Westlea School. Such was thepopularityof the man that the school is not large enough to hold all those who loved him and wished to attend. However, what finer accolade could we have, than for this great man to have chosen us for his special day.

Table Top Sale

Members of Toothill Church hold a Coffee Morning every Thursday from lOam - 12 noon and everyone who would like to come and join in will be very welcome. It is held in the lounge of the church. Coffee and biscuits are available for 25p and sometimes home-made cakes, crafts and stationery are on sale. Proceeds go to the Church Building Fund. The Coffee Mornings have been held for about sixteen months now and we all enjoy the fellowship and talk. We would like more people from the community to join us and they will be made very welcome. A good way to save and borrow Toothill Credit Union has been in existence for more than two years. In that time many people have taken advantage of the facility to save and borrow money at a very low interest rate, 12% A.P.R., which actually works out at 6% if the loan is paid back on a weekly basis. People borrow for all sorts of reasons, for example, holidays, Christmas, Poll Tax. The Credit Union can lend to self-employed people for small items like ladders, tools etc. As long as members have saved with the Credit Union for 13 weeks they can borrow £65 on top of their shares. For example, if they have saved £100, they could borrow £165 and their £100 shares will remain in their savings account. Many peopleare joiningtheToothill Credit Union, mainly 'by word of mouth'. Anyonecanjoinandailmembers receive free Life Insurance. The orga nisa tion would like more volunteers to help with book-keeping, administration and collections.

The training in book-keeping is free of charge and could be used as a reference for future employment. The chairman of the Swindon Credit Union Forum, Pat Cheney, recently commended Toothill on their achievements, and Credit Unions in general have been recommended by 'Which' magazine. Sewing for the top A dressmaker from Freshbrook is hoping to become the best in the land. And Friday 13 March could be her lucky day. Angela Walidate from Barkstead Close submitted a creation to the preliminary stages of the second ever Dressmakerof the Yearcompetition in the autumn. To her surprise she was invited to show her work at the national finals which takes place at the Creative Stitches show in Skipton, Yorkshire on 13 March. She'll also have to model the dress against five other entrants in the evening and bridal wear category. "It's the first time I've entered a competition and didn't expect to get anywhere because the standard is so high; now I hope to win," said Angela, who makes wedding dresses as a paying hobby under the name Pretty Lady. She said she's starting to get nervousas thebigday nears. 'Wewifibe given instruction on how to model our dresses so we don't fall over."

FACES need brightening Freshbmok'sSaturdaymorningjunior club is likely to close permanently - unless some volunteers come forward to take it over. The FACES club for 6 to 12 year olds was started by a group of parents two years ago to provide a fun place to go for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. Thirty children attended regularly to play indoor and outdoor games and try lots of different arts and crafts activities at the two hour sessions held at Freshbrook Community Centre. FACES last met before Christmas and will remain closed unless new organisers come forward said present organiser Wendy Greaves. "The numberof parents available to organise and supervise has got smaller and the burden is too great for the few left.

Seniors get together at school A new social club aimed at senior citizens has started in the 'Sunshine Room' socialhall at Westlea School. Two meetings during February started the club off and get-togethers will nowtake place on the themornings of the first and third Wednesday of the month

No to play space A bid for a small play area in a Westlea street was given a big thumbs down by Birdcombe Road residents at a meeting on 30 January. A proposal by resident Philip Rashid to replace a shrub bed with a play area was rejected because It would be too close to cars coming and going In the cul-de-sac. But they agree that the shrubs should be pruned back so that drivers can see children who might be playing in the road. HoweverPatBown,HeadofParks and Landscape at Thamesdown Council toldTheLlnkthat the shrubs were just reaching their best condition and he was not proposing to take any action at present. "1 don't feel the shrubs are impairing vision at present, though drivers should always be conscious of the dangers of driving in a residential street. "If the shrub needs cutting back after some growth in the summer, we will respond."

Club organiser Vera McKenzie said there are not enough activities going on in Westlea for older people. "We had ten people at the first meeting on 6 February and we hope that more will come along now that we've started. The club is very good for those who can't go very far." The costs of house purchase Mike Rees of local mortgage and pensions advisors Mansfield Begbie Associates explains some of the issues involved Following the response to our article on Mortgages in the January edition of The LinJ4 I would like to consider the effects of the removal of Stamp Duty on all house purchases or transfers below £250,000, completing before 19th August 1992. This will be of particular interest to First Time Buyers who may have problems in raising the monies required that are associated with house purchase. For a purchase price of £50,000, the fees involved for a first time buyer with a 5% deposit (S2,500) to put down on the property, would be made up of the following: 1. LEGAL FEES These vary according to the Solicitor used, but would usually be in the region of £450 - £550, inclusive of land registry, search and other fees involved. However, brokers such as Mansfield Begbie Associates usually have an agreement with local firms of Solicitors that will discount these fees slightly because of the link up with ourselves, e.g. approximately £400 £450 in total. 2. SURVEY FEES Again these vary depending on the mortgage landing source but would usually be in the region of £110 for a property purchased for £50,000.

i.e. the vast majority of properties!! It has been argued that this £30,000 threshold has been kept at this level for far too long and a viewpoint shared by a number of people in the financial services sector, including myself, is that an increase to £60,000 would result in a larger number of first time buyers deciding to purchase, which would then hopefully result in a faster completion 'housing chains.' For a purchase of £50,000, the stamp duty would normally be £500. However, for completion before 19th August 1992, this fee has been removed, which ultimately results in a £500 saving.

3. ARRANGEMENT FEES Some mortgage lenders will charge an arrangement fee for a particular type of mortgage, e.g. fixed rate, which can be as high as £3501 Also, some brokers will charge a fee for arranging the loan. As stated Mansfield Begbie Associates are one of many brokers who do NOT charge fees. 3. MORTGAGE INSURANCE GUARANTEE PREMIUM (M.I.G.P.) Whilst the majority of first time buyers may well have catered for this fee, we find that many are not aware of the M.I.G.P. until it is too late to save up for it, e.g. just prior to exchange of contracts. The vast majority of mortgage lenders charge this one-off fee to all purchasers who wish to borrow above 70-75% of the purchase price or valuation (whichever is the lower), to safeguard themselves because of the higher percentage loan. They calculate this on the basis of a certain percentage (e.g. 70/6), of the difference between 75% of the property value (e.g. £50,000), i.e. 27,500, and the amount of the loan, in this case, e.g. £47,500, i.e. 7% of £1,000 or £700. If the loan is more than 95%, then the M..I.G.P. can beas high as 10.5%, which could result in a fee of over

This is the reason why we would always recommend saving for a deposit and although certain lenders will agree to the M.I.G.P. being added to the loan, this is rare for the cases above 95%. Also, interest rate discounts are not as readily available for mortgages of more than 95%. However, we can obviously help first time purchasers, looking for 1009/o mortgages at competitive rate. 5. STAMP DUTY This is charged at 1% on all purchases above £30,000,

In total therefore, for out hypothetical purchase of £50,000 with a mortgage of47,500, you would normally need in the region of £1,750 (survey, M.I.G.P. and legal fees) exclusive of the deposit and arrangement fees. A saving of £500 on stamp duty is therefore a large proportion of this money required and is something that should be looked at very seriously by all those thinking of purchasing for the first time. After dropping the children off, lea ving Carl with the kitchen to clear and a reminder not to be late for Lindsey, I drive across town to the Octobus Project where I have worked for the last 3'&years. Octobus is a mobile community resource with a wide range of arts andcraftactivities. Ourbiggestpiece of equipment is our converted double decker bus with a comfortable coffee area downstairs and a work room, a quiet room and a dark mom upstairs. We operate in the borough of Thamesdown and the project exists because volunteers keep the idea alive and Wiltshire County Council and Thamesdown Borough Council give us funding. Driving up next to the Octobus I look forany broken windows - were the vandals out last night? Getting out of the car the tyres of the bus are on my mind - did anybody play with the valves or plant a few nails under the tyres for us to drive over? No - the day feels even better. Coffee is brewing in the office, Tim, my colleague is already there. What's on for theday - a session at the Daybreak Project, where we work with a group of homeless young people. Today it will be airbrushing on T-shirts and jewellery making. We'll go in the car and only take the boxes with the equipment, no bus needed. Where is the box with the jewellery bits? Still on the bus from yesterday's session at theHayLane Travellers site. Where are the scissors, I'm sure they have feet of their own? Sitting in the car Tim and I agrw an office tidy up is long overdue. Arriving at Daybreak, boxes out, setting up, people wandering in looking and trying out. We meet new homeless people coming to Swindon to look for work, finding

squats and a new town, but no work - some move on, some stay. Usually arts and craft sessions are fulfilling and hopefully fun. Something you want to try out, you get on with more or less encouragement and you make something that you are proud of, or you look at 'it' in amazement. After 3 hours Tim and Ihead back to the base, stopping at the baker's shop for a bit of lunch, then unpack, putting the jewellery boxes into my car for this evening's session over at Greendown Youth Club with a group of young people. The answerphone has a few messages, so a round of phone calls is necessary - the letters to be answered are in a neat pile. Around 4pm I'm back home, my lucky day means I don't have to cook, the aroma meets me. The children set the table. Everybody talks about their day, the good bits with the bad bits -I forgot the money for the school trip once again and Lindsey forgot her Teddy at playgroup, or was it Daddy's fault? I think dinner is too spicy, but I'm the only one who doesn't like it hot. After dinner: remember to practise violin and you your guitar practise,

and no Lindsey don't try to tune my guitar, I haven't practised all week. Carl has a nap on the couch before he goes out for a meeting. By seven the evening babysitter, Sue comes, I'm handing my children over - the baths, bedtimes, no more snacks, no not even fruit, only half an hour TV. Driving to Greendown I think how impossible it would be to work without good childcare backup. We have been lucky so far with Sue for 3 years and now with Jenny for one year. Thanks for the games and for the goodnight stories and most of all for being there. Greendown Youth Club meets me with tea, Bob Marley music, my volunteer, Dela, Richard the youth worker and most of all, young people. Within a few minutes we are into earrings, broaches and one young man trying to crochet a rasta hat. It is a good atmosphere. Around 9.3Opm I'm d riving home letting the day run through my head, trying to organise tomorrow. It won't be a lucky one, Carl has to go to work as well. But one of Marley's songs stays in my mind: Don't worry 'bout a thing, cause every little thing gonna be alright

March at West Swindon library sees the return of the Swindon Artists' Society with a selection of paintings by members of the Society on display from 7 March to 28 March. Don't forget if you have a particular hobby or interest, or belong to a local club and would like to present a display, please phone us at the library on 871444 or call in and see us at the Link Centre. We have glass display cabinets, free standing boards and an exhibition area. We are now approaching the time of year when the arts and crafts bookshelves start to fill up while the gardening section becomes relatively sparse. Just as the crocuses begin to show, so the amateur gardeners re-appearfrom winter hibernation and start to plan their year. To help all budding gardeners and those in full bloom we hold a range of books on various aspects of gardening. From designing and constructing your garden, through general gardening encyclopedias, to books on particular techniques and types of plants. Organic gardening is represented and if you have a small garden there arebooks to show

you how to get the best out of it. Fruit and vegetable growing is an obvious topic and we have a variety of books on particular flowers. There is a section on greenhouse gardening and growing cacti, while the increased interest in the cultivation of bonsai trees is reflected in several titles. Not all plants are considered desirable in the garden so books on identifying and destroying weeds could prove very useful. Gardening is hard work, but for the most part enjoyable and rewarding. Reading about the subject can add to that enjoyment and even suggest ways of achieving better ivsuits. We also take the magazine 'Amateur Gardening'. As with most things in life there is a humorous side and one title which caught my eye was 'Gremlins in My Garden: confessions of a harassed horticulturist' by Angus McVicar. He describes his real garden, with its 'poor soil, lashed by gales, besieged by moles, rabbits, predatory birds and bugs, covered by tentacles ofthedreaded aistromoeria'. I don't know what that is but it sounds very nasty. I must read on

Smoking Local fitness expert Lee Hogan lays down some hard facts I can't blame anyone who refuses to believe what the so-called health experts and scientists claim these days. One day butter and coffee are bad for you, the next they are not so bad. One thing they all agree on though: smoking does you and others around you a great deal of harm. There are approximately 14 million cigarette smokers in the UK and although the number of adult smokers has declined over the last 10 years, teenage smoking is on the increase. A recent survey by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys shows that 10 per cent of 11 to 15 year olds smoke regularly. The list of diseases now linked to smoking includes coronary heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, bronchitis and emphysema, cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, oesophagus, bladder, pancreas, kidney and cervix, artery hardening and peptic ulcers. The cost in human terms is staggering with an estimated 111,000 lives lost to smoking related diseases each year - one in six deaths. There is also another cost to bear in mind, borne by the NHS. Every year 285,000 people with smoking related diseases are admitted to an NI-IS hospital. Those patients use an average of 9,500 hospital beds daily, meaning that £20,000 is spent every hour of every day treating these patients in hospital. I don't want to end up sounding like an accountant sol will leave you with two simple facts. Men who smoke double their chance of dying before they reach the age of 65 and the probability increases for women.

The summer camp will be based at Greendown Community School with all of the activities taking place between 10.00am and 3.00prn, with an hour for lunch at 12.00 noon.

Participants - aged 8 to 14 years, and one group of 'Tiny Tots' for 3 - 9 year olds - should wear the appropriate clothing for the activity chosen; changing rooms are available. A packed lunch will be required if the child is staying on site at lunchtime.

Lunchtimes will be supervised. After finishing their lunch, activities such as quizzes and video's will be arranged.

Wet houses tenants bid for action Council house tenants in Grange Park are demanding compensation for damage to their homes caused by poor design. Residents of The Holbeins organised a petition in November calling on Thamesdown Council to do something about severe condensation in their homes. They also say that many homes are structurally suspect. A meeting with the Chair of the housing committee and council officers produced anundertaking that each property would be surveyed and that windows would be replaced in four years, rather than the previous estimate of eight. The water running off the metal framed windows has caused severe damage to plaster, wallpaper and tiling, but resident Bev Pett says the council will not accept any responsibility orconsidercompensation for ruined decorations. "1 do all I can to keep condensation to a minimum. We've recently decorated but the areas around the windows have been ruined." She added that the floors in some houses had dropped by two inches and furniture around the edge of the rooms have to be propped up. Residents have had assistance fromThamesdown Law Centre who arranged for independent surveys which suggest that some houses are structurally unsound. The residents had a meeting with the housing committee on 23 February to press for further action.

Youngsters join up An article about the Sea Cadets in the February edition of The Link brought forward a 'marvellous response' according to the unit commander. The article for our Local Lives page, written by fifteen year old Wayne Fulcher from Godolphin Close, Freshbmok, described how much fun it is to take part in the Sea Cadets. Wayne, who is a member of the crew at ThTurbulent in Wootton Bassett, said he can't understand why more young people won't take up the challenge and join in. Five youngsters from West Swindon contacted Sub. Lt. Gambling to find out more about the unit and will be attending the Sunday morning parades. Hopefully they'll be interested enough to stay on and go into uniform.

The Wootton Bassett unit was presented with an efficiency award in February based on the number of courses taken, involvement with the local community and the attitude andoutlookofthecadets. Complimenting our centre page feature on the 100 years of health provision at Swindon's Health Hydro and coinciding with International Women's Day on 8 March, Jan Tostevin explains the entirely free service provided by the Well Woman Centre based at the Hydro.

What does the Centre offer? There are three public sessions (Monday evening, Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning) whenyoucan drop inforachatanda cuppa andbesure to find a friendly 'listening ear'. The emphasis is on positive health so you are equally welcome whether you are bounding with energy or stnigglingto reverse a down-turn in life. There is an excellent information resource touching on all aspects of health from the 'straight medical' (asthma, diabetes, headaches, menopause, period problems etc) to the life experiences which can also influence health so drastically (like bereavement, childcare, divorce etc). On Mondays and Wednesdays our doctor and nurses are there to give professional medical advice (though no treatment is given), and there is a whole range of checks and tests available free (including smears, blood pressure, urine, weight). All our services are completely confidential and many women like to come to us with problems about which they feel particularly shy, knowing that the Centre is staffed entirely by women. For example, we have a continence specialist who can talk to women on a one to one basis on one Monday a month. We

also work closely with the Alcohol Advisory Centre and offer within our Centre individual counselling for women who may have an alco-hol problem themselves or with a member of their family. There are also self help and support groups like those for women with breast cancer, menopause difficulties or who have experienced some forrnof sexual abuse. A Spring soccer tournament for boys and girls aged under 8 and under 11 is being organised by Greendown School and The Link magazine. The tournament is for 5 a-side teams organised by parents rather than clubs. The first tournament last October brought together 11 teams. It was a very successful event and the parents present said they wanted another one.

Linda said, "It was a big shock when Lauren was first diagnosed, but she is doing well considering what we were told about her possible future development. She was able to walk at two, feeds herself and communicates with sounds. 'There hasn't been much research

done into the problem and because there are so few of us, it's difficult to keep in touch with parents around the country. Gareth and Terry's fund raising will be invaluable in helping us organise a four day conference and social event for families effected next October." She said that parents were also producing a booklet about Cii du Chat to assist doctors recognise the symptons and help parents understand the condition. Locally based company Intergraph helped Terry and Gareth by paying for travel and clothing.

Second birthday for Matthew A daily diet of special low protein food and 20 lots of medicine makes Matthew Stone of Shaw a special child. He suffers from citrullinaemia, a rare condition which means all the protein he eats turns to ammonia which poisons his system. Life for Matthew and his parents Phillip and Carolyn has been full of surprises, hard work and a lot of frustration. TheLinkhas followed his progress since he was born in February two years ago. For the last twelve months his parents have been fighting to keep Matthew alive. In March last year he was rushed into hospital in a coma and has been in PMH on two other occasions. Throughout the winterhe has had to take antibiotics in addition to his regular 20 doses of medicine so that he does not catch a cold and stop eating. It's absolutely essential that his parents get a set amount of food into him daily so that the correct chemical balance in his body is maintained. The special food is expensive and the Stones have been fighting the Social Security bureaucracy to get an attendance allowance. After months of arguement, and with the help of Swindon MPSimonCoombs, the DSS has agreed to backdate payments to August. But the Stones

Carolyn recently travelled to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children to discover that the results of Matthew's blood tests in Swindon had not reached London. "To look at Matthew running around you wouldn't think there's anything wrong," said Carolyn. "But we can never relax, his condition could change at any time. "It's hard work but everyday is a new day. We didn't think we'd get here."

I was very interested to read the letter by CM Davies as I totally agree with the sentiments. I have a 2 year old son who enjoys the excellent play facilities at Lydiard Park. However I have become more and more disgusted and concerned about the dog excreta on the paths and grass areas. Not only is it very unpleasant to step in, it is also extremely dangerous to children's health. I am particularly concerned about the lawn area in front of Lydiard House which is oftenused for ball games and picnics, particularly in summer. This area is frequently over-run by dogs and covered in dog mess. If dog owners are not responsible enough to remove their dog 'mess' then I think there should be a ban on dogs on the front lawn. If not all year then at least May to October. I am not suggesting that we in England should go as far as the Swiss. Dog owners need simply a polythene bag to pick up and dispose ofany inopportune accidents. BUT until supposedly intelligent humans learn to respect their environment and not treat it like a tip they cannot expect to find our parks sterile. The litter in West Swindon is getting worse and worse. At least muck is biodegradable unlike the broken glass littering our pavements, lam a dog lover and proud of it! I feel it is about time I had my say about dogs in the area,and to stand up to the local anti-dog lobby. I agree to a point that some owners can be blamed for the fouling on pathways by their dogs, but I am sure that no doggoes around breaking glass bottles on said pathways. Everyday I walk my dogs (four of them) down paths that are covered by glass,broken by mindless, heartless children and see new young trees smashed to the ground. Maybe these people and parents had better be educated as well. As for Lydiard Park and dogs, many walk around offleadsl agree, but I've yet to see dozens running wild. I do take offence to CM Davies' ranting and raving about it being unfit for humans. Just look at the litter around the duck pond, leftby humans (paper/plastic bags, coke tins etc). Show me the dog that does that, even more in the summer months. Many people blame dogs in this area, and in some cases they are justified, but the people like myself who take a great deal of pride in our dogs do get a bit fed up being tarred with the same brush. As for the fouling in the Park, I have walked through late of an evening, and have counted up to six foxes. Nobody as yet has complained about them fouling or maybe they just don't count. My dogs seem to find it quite regularly and believe me 'there is lot of it about' as they say. We have been consistent advocates of total de-regulation of trading hours and gave evidence to this end to the Government's original Auld Enquiry. Ourexperience inScotland, where we have long traded all our stores for seven days, demonstrates that Sundayisa preferred shoppingday, not least because it allows families to shop together. Church attendance in Scotland remains higher per head of population so fears of irrevocable changes to the nature of our traditional Sunday can be seen to be unfounded. Ourbelief is that individuals must

be flee to choose when they wish to shop; those with strong moral ob jections may choose not to shop on a particular day. In the same context itis worth pointingout that no ASDA employee is obliged to work on Sundayagainst his or her will, and experience in Scotland shows there to be no sñortage of individuals wishing to work on Sundays. In conclusion, it is clear that the existing legalposition is unclearand anomalous. We look forward to an early resolution of cases currently before the European Court and for ourown Parliament to enact legislation which accommodates the enormous changes which have occurred in consumer preferences and consequently in the structure of the retail trade since the current Shop Acts were framed. In the meantime ASDA will continue to seek to provide the very best service we can to all the communities in which we trade.

Road Safety From Mrs A Watkins, Moresby Close, Westlea Injanuary's edition of TheLink there was an article on Road Safety and 'danger spots' in the area with an invitation to add to this list. I would like to add the area in Rivenhall Road outside Barclay's Bank where peeple park cars in order to go to the cash dispenser. On Friday 31 January at 12.30pm we counted 11 cars parked tl.ere, with a bus hying to negotiate the already narrow road. We, ourselves have had several near misses, especially

at the junction near the roundabout. I can remember, some years ago people objecting when this building was first proposed, traffic congestion being one of the reasons. If my memory is correct, Thamesdown Borough Council also objected, but was over-ruled by Government, at great expense to the then ratepayers of Thamesdown. I would propose the painting of double yellow lines along this busy road, provided that these were enforced by the police or traffic wardens.
