Somme memorial sculpture created to highlight Swindon’s role in The Great War A new memorial sculpture commemorating the Battle of the Somme in 1916 has been designed by Dr Mike Pringle of Swindon Heritage, and created from battlefield finds Representing multiple nations that fought in the First World War, the seven foot cross of remembrance has been constructed by Stainless Supplies in Royal Wootton Bassett. Mike is in the process of finding an exhibition space for the sculpture at the time of going to press. Mike said: “I have this image of the cross in a darkened setting with a single spotlight to illuminate it. Unfortunately, with summer coming there aren’t that many suitable dark places so we are looking at various venues and halls that can play host to the sculpture. However, if we could get the right setting for the cross I believe its poignancy and power will be very emotive. “Although the cross is a piece of artistic design, it’s very eery. It is made of battlefield finds, and I tried to make sure every nation was represented. We have British, French, German, potentially some American artifacts and more besides. We are trying to illustrate

that there were no victors in this war, only the victims. Mike added: “I feel that sometimes with remembrance events, Swindon occasionally misses the boat and I wanted to make sure this time that we were seen to be commemorating the fallen as much as anywhere else. Swindon sacrificed so much during the First World War and I feel it’s so important to show that Swindon

remembers.” The impact of the Battle of the Somme was felt heavily on a local level because of the introduction of the ‘Pals battalions’, where groups of friends, colleagues, neighbours and sports teams signed up to fight together. More than 100 soldiers from Swindon are commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves memorial at Thiepval towering over

the Somme battlefield in Northern France, recording the names of men who fell but were never found to be buried. Ninety five per cent were employees of the GWR Works. As well as the Somme memorial cross, Dr Pringle is also working with Isambard School and the Orbital Shopping Centre in North Swindon to highlight the town’s aeronautical history.

New mayor backs Brighter Futures and Dressability Cllr Eric Shaw, who represents Chiseldon, was made Mayor of Swindon at the first council meeting of the new civic year on 20 May. He has chosen to support two charities of contrasting size. West Swindon Dressability is a small group of paid staff and volunteers who do vital work adapting clothing so that people with disabilities are able to wear everyday garments which have been altered to allow easy access and give self-confidence to the user. At the other end of the scale, Eric, pictured, is supporting the GWH Trust Brighter Futures charity which is raising £2.9 million to bring radiotherapy to Swindon, so that cancer patients will no longer have

The parents of 11 year old Daniel Climance, who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in June 2015, are to start a trust to remember their son, by helping other young people to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Stuart Climance ad Helen Lucas visited a new trim trail at Bridlewood Primary School in Ash Brake in mid-April, built with donations made at Daniel’s funeral. Helen said she and Stuart want to build on the support for ‘Do it for Daniel’ which took place during

Road Safety Week last November when families were asked to run, walk or cycle in support of road safety charity Brake. She said: “Out of sadness will come something positive. We are registering ‘Do it for Dan’ to raise money for grants to help individuals and teams in Daniel’s memory. “We’re looking at a range of activities in November, including a another virtual run and are thinking of a gala dinner and dance.” Details of the charity launch and other events will be announced.

Thamesdown Managing Director celebrates 10 years service

Domestic violence campaigner speaks out in June Mandy Thomas, Swindon author, poet, artist, photographer - and victim of severe domestic violence and psychological torture - will talk about her book You Can’t Run at Central Library on Thursday 2 June. She plots 18 years of unimaginable abuse in dreadful detail. She was beaten, cut with knives and glass, threatened with a blow torch, imprisoned and raped many times - learning by painful experience to walk on eggshells whilst bringing up 5 children, including Daniel who killed himself

in 2008. Mandy believes it was the psychological trauma of witnessing the violence that was the cause, though the coroner judged the case was inconclusive. Mandy was hospitalised several times, dumped in A&E by her abusive husband. Eventually he was jailed for 15 years but was released on licence after six. Many would have succumbed to the demons inflicted into their consciousness by such experiences, but Mandy has become an award winning advocate for justice for

victims of domestic violence and a Women's Aid Survivor Ambassador. She's also been the chief advisor to script writers of Radio 4's The Archers where domestic abuse and the consequences has been and will be a central storyline for the next twelve months. "People ask why I didn't just leave, but an abusive relationship takes many forms. You become trapped by a clever, manipulative person in an invisible prison of threat, I didn't know where to turn," said Mandy. "Since 2002 I've campaigned for better treatment from the justice system which leaves victims in fear that abuse will continue after perpertrators are released early. "Punishment should fit the crime but it doesn't. It's wrong that victims should be oppressed by a system that allows abusers to continue their evil activities. Should they have human rights when they deny women theirs?" In 2015 Mandy addressed 2,000 law enforcers, politicians and policy makers from across the world attending the Femicide Conference, describing her experiences in gruesome detail and calling on them to act for women. Later this year she will join other

Trio Childcare Connections launches first childminder agency in Wiltshire Trio Childcare Connections is the first organisation in the South West to launch a childminder agency, a scheme that was introduced by the government in 2013. Trio Childminder Agency will register and support childminders who have the potential whilst providing high-quality flexible childcare for families. The organisation has been supporting childminders since 1996, running quality improvement-focused networks for local authorities and training childminders and other early years providers. Julia Hinns, managing director, said: “Introducing a childminder agency feels like a natural progression, building on everything we have done. I believe in the quality improvement aspect of a childminder agency and our team is excited about this new chapter in our organisation.” Trio currently delivers support, advice and training to Ofstedregistered childminders in Swindon, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, as well as providing initial pre-registration for childminders nationally. “A lot of good or outstanding

An 18 day visit by Jorge Calderon and Maria Jose Gurrero Figuera from Ocotal, Swindon’s twin town in Nicaragua, has been hailed a great success in celebrating 25 years of support, exchange and deep friendship. Planned to coincide with Swindon Festival of Literature, the packed programme included a civic reception hosted by the mayor Cllr Andrew Bennett, poetry and dance performance at the festival Spanish evening, a day of language and geography classroom work, and dance workshops at Lydiard Park

Academy, as well as trips to Avebury and Windsor Castle. Most evenings were taken up with social events involving members of Swindon Ocotal Link which sustain contact for the twin town by supporting educational grants, a nursery and an old people's day centre. Afghanistan vet returns from Invictus games with hopes of a flying future A former soldier living in North Swindon, who returned from May’s second Invictus Games for disabled military personnel, has expressed his deep appreciation for the care, support and encouragement he has received since being seriously injured in Afghanistan. When Corrie Mapp, right, was just seven years old on a visit to the UK from Barbados, a seed was sown, watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, that one day he would join the British Army. By way of army cadets at secondary school and four and a half years with the Barbados Police armed response unit, in 2005 he joined the Household Cavalry Regiment. Within a year he was on horse guard duty, having his picture taken by thousands of tourists, and later was on show at the Trooping of the Colour. In 2009 his squadron was deployed to Afghanistan where, in the dust and heat, looking after horses and polishing breast plates and helmets became a fond memory. Corrie’s memory of the improvised explosive device that blew up under him, tearing off his left leg below the knee, is non-existent. He explained: “It was 31 January 2010 and my Scimitar light reconnaissance vehicle was on the way to help an injured infantryman and his unit which was pinned down by enemy fire. We were heading for high ground when the IED went off; the three in the vehicle were injured but I was the lowest and caught the full blast. “Other soldiers involved and the medical staff have filled in the blanks. Later I talked with the guy who tied the tourniquet to stop the bleeding and the others who put me in the helicopter along with the injured infantryman. I was told the surgical team at Camp Bastion had to take my right leg off before being flown to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. They also had to deal with a punctured lung, a broken hand and my face was pretty mangled up.” After three weeks Corrie transferred to the MoD’s Hedley Court recovery centre to be fitted with prosthetic legs and to start an intensive programme of rehabilitation. He said: “They believe in quickly getting you used to the

new normalcy that is your life and learning to become self-sufficient; wallowing in the past is not an option. “Later when we talked about future options I had ideas of becoming a weapons training instructor, but the medical board suggested it was safer if I retrain as a tailor for the regiment. Working indoors didn’t appeal at all and I decided to leave the Army at the end of August 2013. Corrie currently plays six sports and represents Great Britain in bobsleigh, sitting volleyball as well as track and field events. He also plays cricket for the Hampshire disabled team, golf and sledge hockey. Corrie was a member of the British veterans sitting volleyball team at the first Invictus Games in 2014 in London which took the gold medal, but returned from the second games in the USA with a silver medal. “Florida was an awesome experience; the welcome and support was amazing,” he said. At the age of 37 Corrie is focussing on the next stage of his life as he's applied to Wings for Warriors to train as a commercial helicopter pilot. Out of serious injury that took him to the edge of life, Corrie has emerged strong and focussed about the future. “I’m happy in myself and accept my injury as my normal,” he said. “But there’s no question, I’m very thankful to all those people who have been with me all the way during the recovery process, from the guys who pulled me from the wreck of the vehicle to all the medical and physio staff who have put me back together. I've had great help from Help for Heroes, the British Legion and the limbless veterans charity Blesma, and I'd like to thank all the people who donate to keep these charities going. That sinking feeling as Lydiard House’s south tower causes delays Region’s biggest to Swindon council process and extraordinary meeting is called business expo comes An extraordinary borough council meeting has been called by Swindon’s Labour Group who is putting in a motion to stop Lydiard House and Park being run for profit by a private company. The meeting will take place on 15 June at 7pm at the Civic Offices and is open to the public. Newly elected Labour councillor for Lydiard and Freshbrook Matthew Courtliff said: “During the local election campaign, the strength of feeling about Lydiard was clear and I made a pledge to ensure control would not be given away to a private sector body, which might not run Lydiard in the best interests of our community.” This comes after the council announced an extension to the deadline for proposals by bidders to take over the house and park by two months. Concerns were raised by the bidders asked for more information, focusing on the listed House and other buildings on the site, which will be made available during the process so it can be considered in their submissions if appropriate. The council’s aim is to reduce its annual subsidy of £450,000.

Lydiard House’s South Tower

The window for bids, which opened in February, will now close on Friday 8 July. It is thought the delay has been caused by potential problems with Lydiard House’s south tower, which was reported in Swindon Link’s March edition as suffering from possible subsidence and that a full independent structural survey is now being carried out. Expressions of interest from commercial and not-for-profit bodies were invited last year, resulting in nine organisations declaring an interest. Lydiard House and Park, which

has been listed as an Asset of Community Value, will remain in council ownership and £850,000 has been allocated to assist any successful bidder with the current maintenance backlog for the site. Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Lydiard, said: “We are committed to both preserving and enhancing the park. Helping ensure prospective bidders are as informed as possible about this site is important, which is why we’re happy to provide them with the additional detail requested to inform and refine their proposals.” Mike Bowden, chair of the Lydiard Heritage Trust which is making a community bid for the park, said: “The process of dealing with the bidding is both fair and competent. Chance to comment on Lydiard Park dog lead consultation A plan to combat nuisance from loose dogs in Lydiard Park, which will require owners to keep their pets on a lead in a quarter of the grounds during the summer months, is open for public consultation. Swindon Council is considering a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to ensure dogs are kept on leads outside Lydiard House, at the barbecue area and on the sports and events field between 1 April and the end of September, from 10am in the morning until 6pm in the evening.

There is also an additional proposed exclusion area for dogs, except assistance dogs, in the small Walled Garden and Rick Yard. The proposal is being considered because the mix of loose and boisterous dogs and families – often with young children - in popular areas of the park has led to regular incidents which have spoiled the enjoyment of the park for some visitors. There have been regular reports to council staff of dogs attacking other dogs, knocking over children, and stealing food from picnics. The PSPO would be enforced by licensed council staff, the police and police community support officers using Fixed Penalty Notices. The fine would be £100, reduced to £75 for early payment. Clear signage would be put up to alert visitors to the restrictions and times of operation. The rest of the park, beyond the areas described above, would be unaffected by the terms of the order. In our series of articles about 40 years since the first people arrived in the western expansion we catch up with Don Cook who ran the first shop

In Spring 1976, soon after the first residents arrived in Toothill, Don Cook, now 85, started to tour the area with a trailer supplying everyday foodstuffs and necessities. He had been running a shop on Victoria Road and saw the chance to supply the thousands of houses planned for West Swindon. He said: "When Swindon council bought the old Wimpey site hut opposite the doctors on Dunwich Drive in 1977 I won the tender to run half of it as a shop; the other half was used as a community hall. "I think everybody would agree the conditions were awful. There were

dozens of building sites in the area and workers would come in as well as residents. Every evening I would go round the narrow aisles with a shovel and scrape out the mud. "I don't think people would stand for those condition nowadays." In 1980 the council terminated the lease and RS McColl who were going to run the convenience store at the new village centre took over. Community News Coate Miniature Railway extension opens After three years’ hard work, an extension to the Coate Water miniature railway is now open to the public, increasing the track to a mile in distance. Open some Saturdays, every Sunday and bank holidays (weather permitting) from around 11am to 5pm (or dusk in the winter) the railway runs through a lovely wooded setting, with gradients of up to 1.57. During the summer school holidays it also opens on Tuesdays. The landscaping has to be completed and signals have to

be installed on the original route, meaning trains can presently only run along the new section. In the future, the railway will be able to offer the original shorter route or the full distance. Passengers can now be dropped at the Richard Jeffries Museum and be picked up later at a new platform. Fares are £2 per person (adult or child). Caring for the carers Fiona Prinzi of Swindon Carers Centre highlights the need to recognise those who help others. Swindon Carers Centre’s mission is to improve the well-being of people with caring responsibilities, from the age of five, creating a community where carers are recognised, valued and supported. We currently support 3,000 unpaid carers, including 700 young carers between the age of 5 and 18, by providing assessment, emotional and practical support, information about health services and activities to give them a much needed break from their caring role. We work with Swindon schools, colleges and academies to support young carers, which is crucial if they are to attend well, achieve and have aspirations for their futures in line with peers who do not have a caring role. There are 21,000 unpaid carers in Swindon alone and they save the Swindon purse £395 million per year. Carers in the UK save the economy a massive £132 billion per year - close to the cost of setting up a second NHS. It is in everyone’s interest to support carers. One in eight of us

is a carer, and anyone can become one at any time. Unpaid caring is not a choice. Carers are the most amazing, selfless, patient people you will ever meet. Bradon students learn so much from trip to India Twenty-five Year 11 students spent nine days in north India with teachers on a British Council Connecting Classrooms initiative at the end of April, visiting schools and orphanages and taking in famous sites such as the Taj Mahal and the Golden Temple at Amritsa. Group leader Deb Cousins said: "We've forged close links with the Salwan School in Delhi and we hope to host a visit by teachers in October. "It was an amazing trip when

our students embraced the cultural differences with maturity and really bonded as a group becoming our ‘India link family." Describing the visit to the Tibetan Children’s Village founded by the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, James McGlone-Fry said: "We had the opportunity to visit on a full working day. It was very moving to hear about the principal’s journey into India and the struggle many Tibetans still face while being controlled by China. However, the visit made us

appreciate the power of education and how kindness, love and joy are still present in people who have lost everything." Hannah Saunders added: "To meet students at Salwan Public School and see how much they value their education really made us appreciate what we have. Their determination to succeed in their learning was inspiring. They were so proud to talk about their heritage and their campus. They really were brilliant hosts."

Protecting elephants by keeping them away from people Redhouse resident Tanya Cobb is off to Africa at the end of June to help local people protect their farmland from maurauding elephants with the help of bees - and she's appealing for your help. Tanya, right, who went to Isambard Community School and Cirencester College, before starting a bioscience degree at Exeter University, is working with five other undergraduates who

will spend a month in Kenya. She said: "As humans cultivate more land that elephants have roamed on in the past, the potential for conflict, damage and injury to people and animals has grown enormously. "Work by Dr Lucy King has shown that understanding and using elephant behaviour can reduce conflict as a result of crop-raiding by using the elephant's instinctive avoidance of African honeybees. "Our Bee-Elephant Enterprise Project (BEE Project) is a cooperative effort with local farmers who will install beehive fences in a human-elephant conflict hotspot outside Tsavo East National Park. "These fences act as a natural deterrent, preserve the village crops and create a social and economic boost to poverty-stricken rural communities through pollination services and sustainable harvesting of honey. "The fences are simple and cheap

to make, no cement is required` and they are made using locally sourced materials. Hives, or dummy hives, are hung every 10 metres, linked together by wire so that if an elephant touches one of the hives or the wire, all of the hives along the fence line will start to swing, disturbing the bees who emerge to drive the elephant away. African honeybees are aggressive and elephants really don't like them." The BEE project is seeking £9,000 to build a complete beehive fence. New school viewing for Ridgeway Farm starters A few of the first children who will attend the yet to be completed Ridgeway Farm Primary School donned hard hats and high-vis jackets with their mums and teachers to take a peak inside. Doug Gray of construction firm Beards conducted the tour. He assured the parents and teachers that handover to the Diocese of Bristol Academies Trust who will run the school, will take place in good time for the start of term in September. Located in the middle of housing, each of the six classrooms will have its own sheltered outdoor play space to complement the grass playing field. The building will generate a lot of its own electricity from a large array of solar panels on the roof which will also feature ceiling tubes to bring light into the classrooms. Butterflies celebrates first birthday

The team at Butterflies Family Centre, based at Abbey Meads Community Primary School celebrated a successful first year at a birthday party on 23 May. The centre, which was formerly Butterfly Children’s Centre, was formed last year following Swindon Council’s reconfiguring of children’s centres across the borough. A selection of families joined staff, volunteers, councillors and council officers to take part in singing, dancing, craft and messy activities. Council chief executive John Gilbert cut the birthday cake. Manager Tanya Parkinson said: “Since being decommissioned as a

children’s centre, the team have worked with council officers to reshape our service by involving the community and the families we work with. We’ve paid particular attention to those who have benefited from extra support at challenging times in their lives and taken note of how we can continue to help and support as many families with under 5s as possible.” The centre has developed a programme of activities to support families with different needs by running a number of drop-in groups. The intention is to provide places within the community where parents can meet and support each other. This is especially important in a community like North Swindon where families often move in without having the support of family nearby, with always at least one trained member of staff on hand for advice and support. A number of the Butterflies team are family and parent support advisors who run smaller groups offering additional support for invited and/or referred families. These give carers and children time to discuss concerns in a nurturing environment where trust is built. Staff also provide outreach to families on a one-to-one basis for issues like family breakdown, low mental health, addiction, domestic abuse, parenting concerns and children with additional

needs, which could be medical, developmental or emotional. Tanya said: “Anyone can face challenges in their lives no matter their background; it may feel overwhelming at times. Talking to someone can be very daunting, but parents are reassured they are not alone. We are not here to judge, but to listen and offer ideas. I am extremely proud of the skills our team have - from accredited parenting course trainers, for both behaviour and autism, parenting specialists, counselling and therapist qualifications, qualified teacher status and more.” Butterflies has worked intensively with over 500 families, over 90 per cent of whom have stayed and completed their support and 96 per cent show a positive change for their family. During the first part of 2016 more than 1,700 adults and children used the centre. After receiving some intensive support a mother wrote to the centre, saying: “Thank you is not enough, but I want you to know how amazing you all are and what a difference you have made in mine and my children’s life. I am not sure if I would be where I am today without your support.” Tanya said: “Feedback like this is so humbling. We are delighted that, together with Swindon Council, we have achieved such success within our first year as a family centre.”

Pre-school to make way for bigger gym

Staff and parents at the Link and Learn Pre-School at Link Centre have been told by GLL, who now manage the building, that their 21 years of use will end in late July to allow for an enlarged gym. Link Centre was originally designed, built and opened in 1985 with a dedicated space for under 5s. The pre-school is a registered charity employing five full and parttime members of staff and provides up to 24 places for children aged 3 and 4 years. Link and Learn supervisor Gilly Betts said she and colleagues were devastated to be told that they

had to leave. “Despite our long association within Link Centre we’ve being given hardly any time to find another place to meet. But we're determined to continue and not let down our families," she said. A GLL statement said that Link and Learn Playgroup were advised in April 2015 that the space they use could be affected by plans to expand health and fitness facilities. It was confirmed on 10 March 2016 that the space hired by Link and Learn is required for the planned gym expansion and that no other financially viable spaces are available within the building.

June: Child safety Information and advice for parents from ePIP Discovering your child has been seriously hurt is every parent’s worst nightmare. This month’s article is not intended to scare, but to help us all reflect on the importance of child safety. For Child Safety Week 2016, the Child Accident Prevention Trust is asking us to ‘turn off technology for safety’. Smart phones provide us with information and entertainment in the palm of our hands and are a great distraction from reality. Unfortunately, accidents occur when we are distracted and serious accidents can happen alarmingly quickly, taking us by surprise. Rushing to check a text message or email when your two year old is in the bath, for example, can lead to devastating consequences. Most accidents happen in the home, where we think children are safest. When you view your own house through the eyes of a toddler, getting down to their level, there are many dangers that we just don’t notice as adults. We can so easily be taken by surprise by our

baby’s sudden ability to roll off the bed and our toddler’s strength in climbing the furniture or reaching a hot drink on the table. Outside the home, road accidents involving children peak between 3-7pm. It’s not hard to imagine them leaving the school gates, heads down, checking their phones as they step into the road. As parents, if we are distracted by our phones, our children are much more likely to copy our behaviour. Role modelling how we want our children to behave in order to help them stay safe is crucial. Let’s all try ‘turning off technology’ during important times in the day, giving children our full attention and keeping them safe. It also helps to give them the message that they are important to us, we are listening to them and they are the centre of our attention for that time. A chat with the newly appointed director in association with new museum and art gallery for Swindon’s The long discussed plan for a purpose built museum and art gallery in Swindon town centre takes a step closer when its first director takes up his position in the middle of June. Appointed by the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery Trust, Hadrian Ellory-van Dekker, 47, does not fit the stereotype of a museum director. Born and brought up in East London, he was the first in his family to take ‘A’ levels and go to university. Currently the Science Museum’s head of collections and chief curator, his route to Swindon is grounded in experience. Hadrian will be responsible for overseeing a fundraising strategy for the yetto-be-agreed building, managing the design and build if the money is agreed, and developing the programme of exhibitions and events. He said: “I grew up with a passion for archaeology and explaining things from the past. I started volunteering at the British Museum at the age of 13 and continued after university when I was taken on for a six month contract. It turned into 15 years, working in different departments interpreting and presenting collections to the public. I was also involved in the early years for taking advantage of the possibilities the internet gave us to put the collections online.” Hadrian has spent a year in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, observing different approaches to collections management and presentation to the public. As the Science Museum’s longest serving head of collections, Hadrian has had contact with a wide range of trustees, sponsors, donors, civil servants, learned societies and other museums and galleries. He is also a director of the Collections Trust and chair of the Accreditation Committee for Museums and Galleries which oversees the

At about 7am, just before the town’s famous Magic Roundabout reopens after planned maintenance work, there will be an incredible convoy of 60 cars of today and from the past, all of which have parts made in Swindon at the town’s Mini Plant, formerly Pressed Steel. BMW Group are celebrating Mini Plant Swindon sixtieth year of production in conjunction with Swindon 175 by bringing a wide range of vehicles together which will parade around the Magic Roundabout before heading towards Lydiard Park for a static exhibition starting at 9.45am Starting at 12noon on 9 July is the town’s traditional Children’s Fete in GWR Park on Faringdon Road, celebrating 150 years since it was first held. There will be stalls from community groups from all over Swindon representing a wide range of causes, as well as every nationality now settled in the town. Music, games and activities, a traditional steam-powered carousel and a wooden helter-skelter will give the event a traditional flavour. Hills - A family company at the centre of Swindon life for 116 years Back in 1900, Edward Hill set up the Morris Street Brickworks in Rodbourne - and the story of The Hills Group began. Six years later and trading simply as E Hill, he acquired three neighbouring brickworks at Kingshill, Badbury and Purton. The First World War was significant as it resulted in diversification and the emergence of the now familiar Hills fleet of trucks. After the war, Edward turned his energy to digging gravel at South Cerney and a stone quarry at Stratton. By the Second World War, the business was trading as E Hill & Sons and was based at Kingshill. Edward’s son Grahame took over from his father and by 1957, the

now limited company operated 100 goods vehicles. In the late 60s and early 70s the company switched from long-distance haulage operations to waste disposal and skips for hire. Upon Grahame’s death in 1977, his son Robert took over as chairman of the company. Robert reorganised the business in the 70s and 80s, ably assisted by the current chairman Alan Pardoe, and they more than anyone shaped the modern day Hills Group. The company is now run by Robert’s son Mike and has more than 430 employees supporting three core activities: • recycling and waste management • quarrying of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete production • and the building of new homes.

In a typical year, the business manages over 600,000 tonnes of waste, diverting around 60% from landfill. Hills’ quarrying operations and award-winning restoration work has helped transform the Cotswold Water Park from old gravel pits into both havens for wildlife and popular leisure amenities. Hills provides millions of pounds in Landfill Communities Fund grants to help preserve sites of environmental importance in partnership with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and Community First. The company is currently based at County Park on Shrivenham Road having moved its headquarters in 2014 from Marlborough, where it had been based for 25 years. www.hills-group.co.uk

Swindon couple print book in aid of Nepal earthquake relief

Dr Ian Matheson and his wife Rosa returned to Swindon in early May from a month long visit to Nepal, with copies of a new book written to raise money for numerous projects in Nepal. The Highworth couple were part of Health Partnership Nepal in Spring 2009. Whilst in Kathmandu they were approached by Amrit Bikram Shahi, now known as Angel, requesting the assistance of a doctor and medicines for some children who were unwell in his orphanage. The couple have been supporting Angel’s Orphanage ever since, through the Friends of Angel’s Orphanage charity they created. They had just left the country when the catastrophic earthquake hit in April 2015. Earthquake Nepal 2015 – The Human Story is a collection of contributions written by more than 50 people and organisations – locals and foreigners – from a waiter, volunteers, doctors, students, children, a mother having a baby, teachers, a dancer, trek guides, relatives abroad, a Rotarian and reporters – on the

Swindon Wide Celebrating the Swindon spirit

Martin Parry, the director of Railway Town History column by Graham Carter of Swindon Heritage

Call me biased if you like, but I have to say Railway Town was a triumph. The premiere of Martin Parry’s film sold out the Wyvern Theatre, and if you catch a future screening or get the DVD, I promise it will tell you much about what I like to call the Swindon Spirit. That spirit is the reason Swindon has enjoyed 175 years of success since Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Daniel Gooch decided to build their railway town here. I’m proud to have been a small part of the film, appearing in it and taking part in a discussion on the stage of the Wyvern after the screening. The talk on the night was mostly about why a town that was so good at solving problems for so long isn’t always on the ball now. What happened to the spirit that made a little town the beating heart of the world’s greatest ever railway and provided the blueprint for Britain’s greatest ever invention, the NHS? The film contains plenty of answers. The spirit grew out of the vision, co-operation, hard work and cleverness of previous generations of Swindonians, and as the editor of Swindon Heritage, I also get to highlight plenty more examples of it at work. Wherever you look in our local history, the Swindon Spirit shines through. Our new summer edition, available from the end of May, includes the story of Mary Slade, who won the MBE for her tireless

efforts to support Swindon men who had become prisoners of war, exactly a hundred years ago. She and her volunteers saved lives, and their work was a logistical wonder, as many aspects of Swindon’s history were. And the Swindon Spirit is still at large in the town’s many community-minded individuals and groups today. We are still a friendly, caring and active town, but we are no longer greater than the sum of our parts, on account of those parts not joining forces often enough. Whereas there was once the railway and the Mechanics’ Institute to unite people under the same umbrella, today we are more likely to turn to the council to guide and provide. But many do not realise or accept the council’s role - as they admit themselves - is ever-diminishing. So who is going to step up to the mark in the future? My favourite bit of Railway Town comes near the end, in footage of a bitter debate over the closure of the Railway Works in 1986, when a railwayman begs to carry on working, saying: “We can make anything in Swindon.” The defiance and the belief in his voice was the Swindon Spirit talking. Swindon’s heritage clearly demonstrates that we could make anything, and we probably could again. Local writer proves to be a dark horse Claire Fleming from Haydon End has just published her second novel, having enjoyed success with her debut, Dark Horse, which is selling well via Amazon in Europe, America and in the UK. She hopes the latest novel, Drowning will follow in its footsteps. Claire works full time for Swindon Borough Council, but has been writing in her spare time since she was at junior school. She said: “I use my website and social media to spread the word about my books, but I’ve found that the personal touch is really effective. I’ve made new friends on local Facebook sites and I combined the launch of my second novel with a book signing at the Lambourn Open Day. People were interested in the fact I was there in person and wanted to know more about the writing process.” Dark Horse was written over the course of a year - on long train journeys and also in Central Library. It tells the tale of a graduate forced to go on the run in sleepy Gloucestershire. Drowning is set in 2025 and is more political. It was inspired by a non fiction book about the

environmental challenges facing the human race, and whether technology has the answers. Claire explained: “I was on holiday in a hot country and overhead a lady say that she didn’t feel guilty about using plenty of water, as she’d paid for it. I wanted to capture that sentiment in a story. It’s not as heavy as it sounds. It’s still a warm, humorous tale, but hopefully makes the reader think more about our actions, our greed and consumerism. “I’m now planning a sequel to Dark Horse because people are wanting more with these characters.” Both books are available on Kindle, or in paperback and are stocked in Central Library. Charity cricket match to end polio A charity cricket match will take place on Sunday 19 June at the County Ground as part of Swindon 175 celebrations. The match has been organised by the Swindon branch of the Rotary Club in support of Rotary International’s mission to eradicate polio worldwide. Polio is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus which can result in paralysis and death. It is now entirely preventable with a vaccine. The match will include Gloucester’s Hamish Marshall who

will captain the Isambard Kingdom Brunel XI and Jon ‘Rocky’ Lewis, of Swindon Cricket Club, who will captain the Daniel Gooch XI. It will be preceded by a Junior 20:20 at 11am between Swindon Cricket Club XI and District XI. The main match starts at 2.30pm with doors opening at 11am. New appointments for Trust STFC The Swindon Town Supporters’ Trust (Trust STFC) continues to widen its reach with the addition of three new board members. Rob Angus, Greg Callard and Rishi Ladwa are all long-standing Swindon Town fans and will work with vice-chairman James Phipps who continues to develop relationships with local businesses. Rob is appointed as an external director with a specific focus on financial planning. Currently director of strategy and propositions at Nationwide, he said: “I’m really pleased to add my support to ensure we safeguard the long-term future of our football club and I aim to help enable the Trust to continue all its great work.” Greg and Rishi both work at solicitors Withy King. Swindon Go-Ride at Lydiard Park Young cyclists can take part in weekly Swindon Go-Ride sessions at Lydiard Park. The summer series takes place every Saturday at 10am from 4 June to 16 July. Go-Ride is British Cycling’s development programme for young people aged seven to 16. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to cycling.

Swindon team to relay swim the English Channel for Aspire spinal injury charity

A team of six swimmers including Bethan Sowden from West Swindon, will be challenging themselves to raise funds for the Aspire spinal injuries charity by relay swimming the English Channel in August. Bethan is no stranger to the arduous swim, having attempted the crossing twice already, successfully negotiating one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world in 2012. On the JustGiving page she shares with team mate Lyndsey Adamson, Bethan said: “From 17 August we

will both be on tenterhooks with the rest of the team to get the call to go to Dover.... from there we will take it in turns swimming an hour at a time until we touch land in France. The Volkswagen Touran MPV – practically perfect

Geoff Maxted of Drivewrite.co.uk takes the VW Touran MPV for a spin

The thing to remember about a Multi-Purpose Vehicle is that the clue is in the MPV designation. In this case it is a mid-size seven-seat vehicle which has many practical uses, none of which include driving thrills. This is the car you want when there is child wrangling to be done or awkward items to be collected from the garden centre. Enthusiastic drivers need not apply. It has to be said that in a sea of similar vehicles the Volkswagen Touran doesn’t really set itself apart. It is determinedly unflashy. The Touran does have one thing

on its side though and that is build quality. It feels solid and dependable, able to withstand the rigours of family car life. The two small seats at the rear fold flush into the floor to ensure there is more than adequate boot space. It takes ten seconds to raise and lock them into position. At a pinch two adults could sit there for a short trip but really they are for children. Even with the third row up there is still room for the family shop at the back. The second row will seat three comfortably and they too will fold

flat individually or collectively to give an already generous boot almost cavernous qualities. The boot itself has hooks, straps, cubbies and 12v power and the tested car also offered a cargo net for extra security. Under the floor is a tyre inflation kit which isn’t to everyone’s taste but serves to better utilise interior space. The tested Touran is the SE version; one up from the base S model. It has all you need but you have to forgo climate control for more basic air-con. All the now expected technology is on board with a decent infotainment screen covering navigation, music and car controls in one easy to use set-up, augmented by steering wheel controls. Pretty much everything has been redesigned to work better than on the Mark 1 version. This means increased safety and more gadgets. The model to avoid is the entry S level which is a tad spartan. As ever, there are various trim levels and options right up to the rangetopping R-Line model. A nice touch is the CD / SD card player hidden behind a bright panel above the glove box which helps to

keep the dashboard neat and tidy. The twelve volt socket, aux plug and USB are tucked away in one of the many useful storage wells. Seats are comfortable enough for long trips and the driving position is good. It even has five Isofix fittings for profligate child-rearers. There’s a good range of engines to choose from. My pick of the range is the 1.6 TDI 110 SE model as tested here. It’s a happy medium between cost, efficiency and performance and comes with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG auto. On test I routinely saw well over 43mpg and on a longer run diesel consumption rose to a heady 51.2mpg. The Volkswagen Touran is not the most exciting car to look at but, for what it lacks in styling, it makes up for with its functionality. Its unique selling point is the classy-feeling interior, which is also more spacious and practical than many rivals in this class. It is very comfortable to ride in but not exciting to drive. Subtle improvements across the board over the previous iteration make the new Volkswagen Touran more impressive than ever as a family all-rounder.

Swindon Super Bees could save the world after bee man’s second big discovery It’s estimated that 80 per cent of the world’s food production relies on bees to pollinate flowers, but varroa mite parasites are weakening bee populations resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of beehives each year in the UK, Europe and the USA. However Ron Hoskins and the Swindon Honeybee Conservation Group have discovered how to combat varroa infestation without resorting to using chemicals. In 1994 Ron found a queen bee with a genetic mutation in one of his hives. It meant she was producing bees which were grooming each other to rid themselves of mites. He said: “The varroa mite became a major problem to beekeepers in 1992. The advice to beekeepers from the Department of Agriculture is to use chemicals and the producers are keen on this. But chemicals cannot eradicate the mites; it

simply means beekeepers intervene to keep them in check, but at the same time weakening the bees. Most feral colonies have been killed by the mite. I’ve not used chemicals for over 20 years since finding that special queen and proved she had a unique ability to breed what I call ‘hygienic bees.’ “Since then we’ve carried out a selective breeding programme of queen bees which lay eggs which develop into bees which have strong hygienic behaviour in their genes. From the original queen we now have well over 100 hives which have very low infestation.” The group’s success has been widely reported amongst beekeepers and in the national and local media. But Ron’s second discovery in 2015 has yet to be widely covered. Though varroa mites are parasites they don’t actually kill bees, but they spread viruses which do destroy them. “The main killer is Deformed Wing Virus (DWV TypeA), spread by the blood sucking mites which occupy the cells in the hive where the queen lays her eggs,” said Ron. “The adult female varroa, having already mated, enters the bee larval cell before it is capped over. There she lays her eggs and makes

a wound in the larval bee’s body to provide blood for baby mites to feed off. As all bee larvae moult several times as they develop in the cell the adult mite must keep the wound open for her young. One of the baby mites is a male which will mate with his sisters and then dies. “Bees have an acute sense of smell and by close observation we discovered that they were identifying the larval cells where there was an odour coming from the wound. “Bees were removing these larvae from the hive before they fully developed and could spread a disease. “The Swindon Super Bees have been studied by virologists who declared that our bees have a Super Infection Exclusion Virus (SIEV) or DWV (TypeB) which means they are immune to the deadly DWV (TypeA) killer virus. “The report of their research into our bees was published in the journal Nature and was featured in a ten minute film presented by Chris Packham on the BBC in October 2015.”

However, the pioneering work by Ron and his colleagues Eddy Eggleston, Glen Head and Ron Hill is being limited and even put in jeopardy because they are denied government grants or support from universities. Despite being very experienced beekeepers they are not regarded as scientists. Ron has just had his eighty-fifth birthday and other members of the group are all over the age of 50. Their passion, expertise and skills could be lost if their discoveries are not developed further. Ron commented: “The struggle to get funding is so frustrating. We’re all unpaid volunteers and it’s amazing that, with the problems the world is facing from bee colony collapse and the implications that has on food production, we cannot get money to further our work. Lydiard House & Park - The Akers family legacy for the community In her own words Gina Akers, great granddaughter of Francis Akers, who gifted Lydiard Park to Swindon, talks about what the site means for her and her family.

In 1943 my great-grandfather councillor Francis Elliott Akers gifted Lydiard House and handed over the park to the community stating “I am glad that the community may be possessed of 150 acres of one of the most beautiful spots in the county.” He was well loved and renowned for standing up for people’s welfare, particularly the elderly. After he died a portrait of him was commissioned from donations by pensioners, and given a place of honour in the old Penhill Common Room, inscribed ‘Our champion fighter and great gentleman.’ He was Mayor of Swindon from 1949 to 1950, his mayoral Christmas card even featured Lydiard House. His funeral in 1965 was so well attended it became a civic occasion. Lydiard Park was hailed by newspapers as his memorial as it still is today. In 1943 in a letter he wrote about Lydiard he tells of how he was prepared to ‘take whatever the Corporation had fixed as a fair sum’, allowing the Swindon Corporation to just pay what they could afford and entrust it to them for the community. He stated the

arrangement ‘does not include one penny for the Mansion’ so it was truly gifted to the community. The Corporation offered just £4,500 for the site of 150 acres and he accepted it. In 1946 The Corporation paid a huge £16,000 for Lawn Mansion including only 52 acres of land, with the mansion in such bad condition it had to be demolished. In 1943 he told North Wilts Herald & Advertiser ‘He had purchased the estate in the hope that it would be acquired by the Corporation and preserved for all time for the benefit of the community.’ Today we all have Lydiard House and enjoy free access to Lydiard Park thanks to Francis Elliott Akers. Like my great-grandfather I was born in Swindon and attended Lydiard Millicent school. Just as he did, I have run my own businesses. I have sat on the board of InSwindon and I ran a business in The Brunel Centre. I am now a TV and radio presenter having presented on ITV’s This Morning, Alan Titchmarsh show and BBC’s Fake Britain. My family are distressed that Swindon Council have decided they

can no longer cover the running costs of Lydiard House and Park. It must stay for the benefit of the community and be freely accessible to the people. It’s bizarre that I’m having to strive to protect for the community something a member of my family has already given them. The ideal scenario would be the council finding a way not to lease out Lydiard Park at all. In failing that my family and myself hope to see a real community bid by a credible group with no conflicts of interest, that is truly

representative of the people, that consults with and engages the community, is transparent to the community and openly accountable to the public. It has to be a substantiated sustainable bid that will protect the future of Lydiard and maintain its staff through a proposal that honestly serves the people the park was intended for.
