They had the chance to try Wiltshire foods and to handle some of the insects from the Longleat estate, such as hissing cockroaches and tarantulas. “Of course the highlight of the day was seeing the Queen and Prince Philip from an excellent vantage point as they arrived for lunch at The Rifles Museum. It really was a once in a lifetime experience which they’ll always remember.”

Cycleway exhibition at West Library

Members of the project team designing the Western Flyer cycle route between the West and the town centre will be presenting their plans at West Swindon Library, on Saturday 16 June, 10am to 2pm. The Western Flyer will upgrade the existing bike route from Westlea to Barnfield and Bruce Street Bridges, passing the Oasis Leisure Centre, to join the town centre at Sheppard Street. The £6 million Swindon Travel Choices project will encourage people travelling to and from the town centre to leave the car at home and cycle or walk instead.

In addition to improvements in the route from West Swindon, better pathways in and across the town centre are proposed. The plans can also be seen www.swindontravelchoices.org.uk

Litter volunteers are at the ready in the West

Litter is an issue for local people, writes Paula Harrison, Locality Lead for West Swindon, and we’ve been really pleased to find that residents want to do something about it. In May we have supported seven new volunteers to litter pick in their local area. Working together with our ward councillors, we’re keen to hear from residents about their ideas, issues or projects that will tackle their concerns and we want to speak with and listen to as many residents as we can. We’ve also had great support from local businesses including Asda, Tesco, the Village Inn and De Vere Village for local community activities. Other work has included supporting plans for a Learning civic responsibilities early. Local Neighbourhood Justice Panels to trial from June

Swindon has been selected by the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice as one of 16 pilot areas across the UK to test out a new community-based approach to anti-social behaviour and low level crime, involving members of the local neighbourhood participating in panels and implementing the principles of restorative justice. In June the first Swindon locality to take the Neighbourhood Justice Panel approach is North Central, comprising Penhill, Pinehurst, Rodbourne and Gorse Hill, with West Swindon coming on stream in July and North Swindon in October. Swindon Borough Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour manager Simon Evans is appealing for volunteers to get involved with the initiative and act as panelists. He said: “We have already had over 40 members of the public express an interest in taking part in Neighbourhood Justice Panels. “Crime and anti-social behaviour are always top of the agenda for communities and people are happy to put their hand up for a common sense approach that requires offenders to take personal responsibility for what they have done. In fact this is what has been shown to make it a more effective measure against low level crime. It’s a lot tougher on the offender when they have to explain themselves to their victims and to other members

of the community who have been affected by their actions.” Each panel will comprise three fully trained community members, the victim, other members of the public who have been affected, and the offender. There will also be an option to include a police officer, social worker or ASB council officer, depending on the type of case. Commenting on the risks involved in volunteering, Simon said: “There is a perceived level of risk for volunteers but none of the evidence bears this out. The panels are problem solving forums rather than courts, and panel members are only facilitators rather than imposers of the contract between offenders and victims.” All volunteers will receive an initial three days of training in order to participate on the panels, with ongoing support and further training. Haydon Wick Primary School’s fascination with outer space was on show when staff from the UK Space Agency visited to show children samples of meteorites, moon rock and talk about the solar system. The visit was a prize won by 9 year old Angel-Lee Richardson who won a Wiltshirewide schools’ competition to design a holiday card that the Space Agency could use on its web site. A generation moves on from Isambard The Link was there when the very first group of children visited Isambard Community School from their different North Swindon primaries in July 2007, below, and we were there on 11 May to picture the last assembly before the pupils departed for exam study. Headteacher Rachel Mattey, said: “We’ve all been on a journey together; this group of pupils came to us as little eleven year olds to look round before the school opened, they leave us as young adults ready for their next stage of life. “They are special people; we’ll never know a group as closely as we have our first intake. They have contributed so much to making Isambard the school it is today. From the start Isambard instituted accelerated learning programmes and the upcoming exams will be the ultimate test for many observers. Ms Mattey believes performance will be impressive. “We’re really looking forward to the results later in the summer. Fire damaged Roves Farm to reopen soon The massively popular Roves Farm has closed following a major fire on 9 May, but they hope to be back in business in July. Fuses on the in-coming mains electricity supply overheated and set fire to a wood mounting panel. Farm staff put out the initial smoulder with carbon dioxide extinguishers and Wiltshire Fire & Rescue quickly arrived but were unable to use water on live electricity cables. The tearooms, toilets, reception barn and the seating/pedal tractor room were destroyed in the blaze. Thankfully all the animals closeby were moved to safety and no humans were injured. Pippa Burr said: “The indoor and outdoor play areas, the bale stack and animal pens remain unaffected. We hope to have these in use, along with tractor rides, crafts and animal racing as soon as we can organize reception, catering and toilet facilities. “We would like to thank everybody for their support. The prize-winning Swindon Mela, now in its tenth year, has been described as the ‘best in the west’ but the biggest free festival in the South West, celebrating the sights, sounds and tastes of the best that the Indian sub-continent has to offer, could be forced to close. Last year saw a record-breaking 23,000 people enjoying the sunshine, the music and dance, the mouth-watering foods and the huge variety of stalls and activities on offer. Two experienced singing tutors are looking for Toothill residents willing to take on the challenge of forming an instant community choir to perform at Toothill Festival on 30 June. Join in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations at our ‘Big Lunch’ On Sunday 3 June we are celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Swindon town centre with a good old fashioned street party – and we want everyone to be there with us! As part of the celebrations we have teamed up with the Big Lunch to encourage everyone to get together, enjoy some great food and the best of our local talent - all for free! There will be a food court for you to purchase food and drinks but if you want to bring your own picnics and set-up for the day then feel free!

From midday until 4pm there will be street performers, Union Jack stilt walkers, Punch and Judy performances, cake sales and a barn dance. There will also be plenty for the kids with games and entertainment from a bucking bronco, tug of war, face painting stands, carousel swings, guess the year competitions and a bunting making workshop. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ll also be showing The River Pageant live on the Big Screen as over 1000 boats gather on the Thames in preparation for the arrival of Her Majesty The Queen.

Plain abseiling on Armed Forces Day!

On Saturday 30 June, inSwindon BID are hosting an Armed Forces Showcase in which the people of Swindon can show their respect to those men and women in the forces. And as part of the occasion, inSwindon have teamed up with Jury’s Inn to create a hub of activity at the hotel on Fleming Way throughout the day - the highlight of which is a sponsored abseil down the building itself!

Kicking off at midday, More Radio’s Howard Taylor will be the first to make the 80m drop, with other local faces also set to take up the challenge. Anyone can get involved – all you need to do is download an application form from www.swindontowncentre.co.uk – so if you feel in a daring mood then go ahead and sign up! There will also be a bustling family area in the hotel itself, with the Royal Yeomanry, a bouncy castle and a giant climbing wall available for the kids (and adults!) to get involved with. These activities will precede a day of respect-paying and musical entertainment in Wharf Green, with military personnel, local celebrities and charities all poised to make it a day to remember!

Get in the mood for Wimbledon in Swindon town centre The most famous tennis tournament in the world is just around the corner, and if you can’t get to the capital to enjoy it, then come and get involved in Swindon town centre! Wimbledon 2012 begins on Monday 25 June, and inSwindon are giving you the chance to join in the fun in Wharf Green. It’s time to dust off your Dunlop Green Flash and get active as we team up with Delta Tennis to open a Mini Tennis Zone underneath the Big Screen on three special dates throughout the tournament. On 28 June, 5 July and the final weekend of 7 and 8 July, Delta’s expert coaches

will be in the town centre to give tips to anyone from the age of three who wants to get involved! Thirteen-year old Krystal Styles from Rodbourne who attends Royal Wootton Bassett School has reached the semi-finals of the Miss Teen UK competition. Having been selected from thousands of applicants she is in with a chance of going through to the grand final in Blackpool in September. Krystal has worked hard for the past couple of years at free-style disco dancing at Bobbi’s Dance Academy, and would love to be a choreographer when she’s older. She also understands what it’s like to be a young carer. As her brother Brandon is disabled, Krystal is becoming an advocate for people who need extra help. According to Krystal’s mum, Nicki, the grand final of Miss Teen UK is a great opportunity to be seen and to network. Netball club get their CAPS

Burmah Netball Club who train at Lydiard Park Academy in Grange Park capped a successful season with the A team winning the second division and promotion in the Swindon and District Netball League. The B team also did very well finishing 2nd in the 3rd division. And the club has achieved the Bronze Club Action Planning Scheme (CAPS) which is aligned to the Sport England Clubmark Accreditation Scheme. This benchmark scheme recognises a well run club which is active and successful, has safeguards and protection for children in place, offers quality coaching and officiating and provides equal opportunities and good management. Isn’t it strange that there is no VAT on food for working greyhounds, but the full rate is charged on food for working assistance dogs? asks Alan Fletcher, chair of Swindon Guide Dogs. At present Guide Dogs pays £300,000 to HM Treasury every year and the charity is calling on supporters to help get this anomaly sorted out. A team of volunteers from Swindon are part of a nationwide movement to put old tools to good use in communities across Africa. But I really believe in this cause – everyone should have the right to free education. Pinetrees Lunch Club opened in March at the new Pinetrees Community Centre on The Circle, Pinehurst and replaces the lunch club that ran at Pinehurst Peoples Centre until it closed in 2007. The club now attracts 40 to 50 people every week who enjoy a two course meal, tea and coffee, and free raffle for £3.90. The first phase of the conservation and preservation of the medieval wall paintings at St Mary’s Church in Lydiard Park has been completed, ready to be seen at this year’s jubilee themed flower festival in early June. St Mary’s launched a £1 million appeal to repair and conserve the building and its historic contents in May 2011 and emergency high level work has been going on in the first half of the year to make it wind and watertight. We think there are two bishops, a couple of soldiers and various VIPs. “It’s remarkable that after 500 years there is still anything there, given that the images have been uncovered then painted over a number of times, there is patched up plaster work, and the wall has

suffered from damp, dirt and acidic bat urine which is very corrosive. “Our task has been to fix the original painted images to the undersurface with isinglass which comes from the swim bladder of the sturgeon, remove flaking paint and repaint where the plaster is exposed. The idea is to retain and bring forward the original images whilst stabilising and cleaning the surfaces they’re on.” Following the Flower Festival, work will commence to repair general masonry, the dormer windows and part of the St John
