Peatmoor mum makes Countdown quarters in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer

A 48 year old Peatmoor woman will appear in the quarter finals of the Channel 4 hit quiz show Countdown on Friday 11 June. Nicki Sellars, from Furze Close, is not only tackling numeracy and word challenges - she also aims to raise money for Breakthrough for Breast Cancer Wiltshire, following the death of her mother Vera Jordan from breast cancer in 2008. She said, “I’m hoping that people who know me will watch and make a small donation in recognition of my bravery and madness in appearing on the programme.” Show hosts Jeff Stelling and Rachel Riley were ‘brilliant - smiling and willing me to do well,’ according to Nicki. She recorded the programmes in May but is sworn to secrecy as to whether she reached the final two rounds. “I’m still excited, recovering from the shock of it,” she said. “I’ve been a fan for over 15 years and have never missed a show, so that helped me get into their mindset. My family, including my 15 and 14 year old daughters, came to the studio to

Nicki has been a supporter of Breakthrough Breast Cancer for many years and has completed three London Moonwalks and has raised over £1,000 from an annual cake sale at Millbrook Primary School where she was a teaching assistant until March. “Everyone at Countdown was very supportive of my fundraising. I took cakes to the quarter finals and everyone enjoyed them. The celebrities and other contestants even said they will sponsor me. “Mum died the second time she had breast cancer. The first time was nearly 30 years ago and she was always grateful that, through research funded by charity donations, she was able to live and enjoy a happy retirement, travelling the world, seeing her children marry, and watch her three grandchildren grow up.“

Mixed response for Aldi store
Supermarket chain Aldi showed off its plans on 17 May for a 990 square metre store at the east end of Thamesdown Drive, on a site next to the Motorola junction presently obscured by earth banking. North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson said he had expressed his concern that the consultation was set up at too short notice for many people to comment. However Richard Williams, property director for Aldi Stores, said there were many positive comments about the contemporary design which will match the style and finish of the Motorola building and tennis centre on the adjacent sites. He said, “people are interested in our offer, which, because of efficient business practices is like-for-like 30 percent cheaper than the big supermarkets.” St Andrews Ridge resident Peter Lawson-Foster said he objected to the Aldi development. “There are already so many large superstores in this area, why do we need an-

Volunteer Centre Swindon is teaming up with up to 20 local organisations to recognise and promote the value of volunteering at an open event on Saturday 5 June, 12pm to 3pm, at Pilgrim Centre, Regent Circus Over 22 million people are involved in volunteering in the UK every year and the event during national Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity for organisations to publicly recognise the work of their volunteers. It also aims to raise the awareness of the benefits of giving time. “The event will showcase volunteering opportunities in all its diversity and gives people a great chance to chat with representatives from different organisations and volunteers to find out more about what they do and how to get

In the parliamentary elections on 6 May the Conservatives swept Labour away, with Robert Buckland taking over South Swindon from Anne Snelgrove whilst Justin Tomlinson took the North Swindon seat vacated by Michael Wills. Why not achieve this through inspiring some patriotism in our children, and helping them feel proud to be British?” This term, pupils in Years 2 and 3 are responsible for tourist information, including creating a guide book with help from graphic designer Sam Allen that will be printed and presented to parents. Years 4, 5 and 6 have set up a multi-media company to organise their own version of the Olympic opening ceremony. “We’ve invited business people to come in and talk to the pupils about their roles and help with tasks like marketing and design,” Terri said. “The most important point is that we are open to opportunities and stay focussed on the pupil voice.” She is clear that most traditional school subjects will be taught discretely as part of the enquiry-based approach. “Concepts like measures, shapes and data gathering will be covered through the enquiry.
“There are new challenges too, like when a six-year-old asks why the sea goes out at night. That’s a big topic for primary school but we have to tackle it if the children ask about it.” High level learning skills, independence and collaboration are key values that Terri hopes to instil in the children. And there are behavioural benefits as well. “When everyone’s focussed and excited about the same thing across the school, behaviour never becomes as issue,” she said. For the remainder of the summer term the pupils are visiting different locations beyond Swindon to develop their projects. They will also be engaged in peer-to-peer presentations with partner schools from London, Bristol and Reading, as well as welcoming friends from their partner school in South Africa. “And as for the World Cup, if England do well we’re going to be going through the roof,” said Terri.
School seeks new governor from the community Orchid Vale Primary School in Torun Way, North Swindon, has a rare vacancy for anyone who is interested in the education of the pupils, the wellbeing of the school and its importance in the local community. James Trudgian, who became a governor of the school last year said he thought the role would only suit a trained person with significant knowledge on educational matters. But after seeking advice, he took the plunge and today, he knows he has a lot to offer. “The main objective of the role is to be a critical friend to the school, and to question, question, question. Children at Oliver Tomkins Junior School dedicated their Lent appeal to help children in Burkina Faso after Jim Allmark from Swindon’s Discovery Church asked them to help provide uniforms. Sue Macdonald, assistant headteacher, said the annual lent appeal was always well supported. “Our children were staggered by the fact that not all children can go to school in Burkina Faso and certainly not afford uniforms. This year the project caught their imaginations and £420 was raised.” Fundraising activities included a sponsored silence, a tombola, a book sale, and an odd socks day – where children paid 50p to wear nonmatching socks. Pupils were also invited to take part in a competition to design a logo to appear on the new uniforms, judged by Jim and Joany Bazmo, visiting Swindon from Burkina Faso.

Baby Fair interest builds
After last October’s crush in a small room at Steam, the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Baby Fair in May had lots of room to expand in the enormous Great Western Hall at the museum. There were dozens of stalls providing everything parents and babies need - from advice on breast feeding to buying a birthing pool, or having a pregnant bump decoration, to music and drama by Debutots. Gary Lamont of WWT said the event had been very successful and plans are already being made for another baby fair in October. “Feedback was good; it gives us ideas for Dylan Garrett and Catherine Barber of Farmer Gow’s the Autumn event.”

But now under new parental management the group is going from strength to strength and hopes to be open for ten sessions a week in September. Lynne Jacobs, pre-school supervisor said, “it’s lovely to be back in the centre; the atmosphere is fantastic. The children arrived on the first day and settled as if they had always been here, playing with toys, doing hand prints to make their naming tree, and enjoying free choice of resources such as musical instruments, sand, computer and
playdough.” The group now has 18 children between the ages of 3 and 5 years, four members of staff, and two parent helpers. It also opens on two afternoons a week for children aged two to three years old. These will be funded if the children are referred by Children’s Services, otherwise the cost is £6 a session. Community Calories club open to all Alpha Pre-School mums who lost nearly 140 pounds, during the Spring, to raise money to start the playgroup, have set up Community Calories at Freshbrook Community Centre to help any women who want encouragement to lose weight and keep in shape. Vicky Lynch, said, “we were very surprised with the amount of weight lost earlier in the year, so we decided to start Community Calories to support others who want to shed the pounds whilst raising money for the pre-school.” The group meets on Mondays 7pm to 8pm for a weigh-in and 30 minute power walk and Tuesday afternoons, from 2pm to 3pm, for a weigh-in and chat over coffee - children are welcome. Over the years we’ve become more and more involved with the children to help them achieve learning goals in the early years foundation stage curriculum.” Liz Angus, a parent of a child with autism who used to attend Special Tots, is now a volunteer herself. “Parents like coming to Special Tots because they feel safe and secure, they’re not judged because of their child’s behaviour. It’s a very understanding environment.” Special Tots, which started as a toy library almost 30 years ago, is part of Swindon Portage, a home teaching service provided by Swindon Council for early years children with significant additional needs. Special Tots works closely with Portage teachers, Koalas special opportunities playgroup and other professional services based at Salt Way Centre, a former primary school now used by a wide range of Swindon Council services and Swindon PCT for children with complex needs. Previously the services were scattered across town; now in one place parents and children receive a more effective service and the professional time is used more efficiently. Liz added, “the service has made an enormous difference to my child’s future and for us as a family. Navigating the special needs process can be a complex maze for parents and having access to professionals in one centre, alongside Koala’s opportunity group, and Special Tots, is very helpful.”

Stalls and talent needed for famous railway heritage fete
The Children’s Fete, organised by Swindon’s New Mechanics’Trust, takes place on Saturday 17 July in the GWR Park, Faringdon Road. It will include all the treats you would expect from Swindon’s traditional summer event, which first took place in 1866 and there are stalls available to children’s charities and green groups, as well as crafts people. Swindon based multi-media artist, Andy Preston presents an evening performance of projected (video & still) imagery accompanied by live ambient electronic music on Saturday 12 June, 7.30pm to 10pm at Artsite, in the Post Modern Gallery, Theatre Square. Andy has worked in this field using the name ‘Edge Effect’ for many years. Although he has appeared at multi-media and left-field music events in Swindon, most of his performances have taken place in London, Bristol, Bath and Burton-on-Trent. He describes his music and visuals as slow, quiet, isolationist, contemplative and eerie. “It's more about creating an atmosphere than providing entertainment, like looking for some kind of doorway into an inner world of magic and phantoms.” The Post Modern event is his first one-man show. 1840: Swindon recommended as ideal for new railway works
Railway historian Steve Wakefield, right, continues his reflections on the 175th year of the Great Western Railway and considers the choice of rolling stock for the new railway line. Brunel’s locomotive superintendent Daniel Gooch entered in his diary: ‘During this year further portions of the Great Western were opened and agreements were made for leasing the Bristol and Exeter and the Swindon to Cheltenham railways, and it became necessary to furnish a large works for the repair etc. of our stock. ‘I was called to report upon the best situation to build these works and on full consideration I reported in favour of Swindon, it being the junction with the Cheltenham branch and also a convenient division of the Great Western Line for the engine works. Mr Brunel and I went to look at the ground, then only green fields, and he agreed with me as to its being the best place.’ Brunel may have been a technical genius but Daniel Gooch was a practical genius; this decision proves it. Swindon was already the location for the junction with the Cheltenham branch and it had a canal, which brought up coal from the Somerset Coalfields. However the reliability and power of the early steam locomotives also determined the ideal spot for the works. The gradual easy gradients between Swindon and London was easy on the engines but beyond, the Wootton Bassett incline required a different type of locomotive to push the train as it climbed up the bank or to slow it down by acting as a brake on the descent. In February 1841 the GWR Board agreed with Brunel about the desire for a repair facility and its location and quickly gave their approval for Gooch to: ‘Provide an engine establishment
at Swindon commensurate with the wants of the company, where a change of engines may be advantageously made and the trains stopped for the purpose of passengers taking refreshments.’ The existing station with its refreshment rooms was added to with a few simple repair shops and some accommodation for employees. The workshops for the repair of locomotives were a priority and construction work began with great haste. Stone came from tunnels and cuttings along the line including Box Tunnel. Glass was also made on site and so was some of the machinery. By January 1843 the works were in operation with over 70 technically and highly skilled engineers and craftsmen. The workforce was some 400 and money was tight. The GWR held one of its first economy subcommittees which put Brunel onto a part-time contract, wages were cut and piece work was replaced with day work. Though hit by these measures the workforce was not significantly reduced and the GWR began to order less components and services from suppliers and contractors. This gave the GWR control over its own quality and efficiency and led to increased output from the workforce and workshops, culminating in 1846 with the first passenger locomotive that was built entirely from components manufactured at Swindon. The broad gauge Great Western was built in twelve weeks and was the first of many locomotives to be turned out from the workshops over the following 120 years.

the bigger picture Water has started to flow again in Canal Walk in the town centre - not horizontally as the 18th Century canal once did, but vertically in a new steel sculpture at the crossroads of Canal Walk, Regent Street and Bridge Street. The water feature is the focal point for the £3.9 million town centre refurbishment funded largely by central government. The pedestrianised streets have been repaved with high-quality stone, new benches have been installed and unique interactive lights will bring the area to life in the evenings. Living green walls will soon provide further points of interest to visitors. Canal Walk is the second area of the town to undergo public realm improvement works, following Wharf Green in 2008. It forms part of Swindon Council’s continuing plan to revitalise the town centre, modernising and enhancing Swindon’s

Budding Wayne Rooneys are preparing for their own World Cup on 5 June, just a week before England kick off their campaign in South Africa, at a Swindon Council organised football festival. The event, sponsored by McDonald’s, is open to children of all ages and takes place at Dorcan Recreation Complex. There will also be some veterans’ matches, skills workshops, an inflatable pitch, along with karting, power kiting and a futsal exhibition match.

Having moved into brand new accommodation at Headlands Grove back in January, Mark and Deb Hows of Esprit Gymnastics proudly opened their doors to VIP guests and parents for displays, tours and taster classes during their official opening day in April. Talented young athletes demonstrated their skills in rhythmic and tumbling displays. “Rhythmic gymnastics is a key differentiator of the centre here in Swindon,” said Dave Marshall, club development manager of Gymnastics England, who had travelled from Yorkshire to attend the opening event. “Once it’s fully established this facility will be up there with the best in the country, and could attract elite camps of national gymnasts. The important thing is that we get the grass roots right, and this is a great example of how we can capitalise on aspirations and raise awareness of the sport in the run up to the 2012 Olympics and beyond.” The centre was leased to Esprit by Swindon Council after Headlands School moved to The Academy in Pinehurst. Swindon is one of just six towns in Britain to be visited by Jill Robinson MBE, the founder of Animals Asia foundation (AAF), as part of her fundraising tour in October.

Demand for the lighting system is now so great that the charity has teamed up with Swindon Probation Service to set up an offenders community payback production facility. Roger said, “people on probation will be vetted as suitable and they will make the units and test them. They will make the components, cut the wires, solder them and assemble the kits before they can be shipped out to where they will be used. I’m currently training an instructor: we are excited about this new project.” Lights for Learning was created eight years ago after Roger and Jean visited the home of a Kenyan hotel worker. The couple had had several holidays there but had not truly appreciated the conditions in which many families live. “We visited the home of one of the lads that we had come to know and saw that one of the babies had been scalded,” he said. “During the hours of darkness, light is often provided by dangerous, homemade kerosene lamps. We learned to our horror that burns are very common.”

Now the charity is the only one given a government budget to install the system to parts of the country where electricity supply is uncertain or reliant on expensive diesel fuelled generators. The partnership with Swindon Probation Service was formally launched on 20 May; the extra help cannot come too soon according to Roger. “The word is spreading and we’re getting new enquiries all the time. We do a lot of fundraising but we need a great deal more money to respond to demand.” It costs £1,000 to provide units for three classrooms and an office. The expedition, organised by Bath based Gambia Connection - a charity aimed at improving education and infrastructure in the village – was ‘a trip of a lifetime,’ according to John Maxwell, from Birdcombe Road. Originally the group were there for ten days but the Iceland volcano delayed their return for five days John, 57, is a qualified football coach and taught youngsters on the dusty playing field while his wife Christine, 55, taught in the local primary school. Son Jo, 22, decorated five classrooms, and Jo’s girlfriend Jodie Clarke, 21, a vet’s nurse, worked with sick animals in the village. John said, “Gambia is a very poor country and it was quite rough even getting to the village. It was 400
miles by road from the capital and not for the faint hearted. When we got there the toilet was a hole in the ground. We all coped with it, and enjoyed helping the youngsters. It’s the first time I’ve been but we’ll be going back next year. “Everybody there follows English football and I ran two training sessions a day, with 40 children aged four to twenty in each session. We ended with a tournament - with cows running across the pitch watched by about 300 people from the village.” John took seven football strips, four provided by Kit Aid and three donated by Gambia Connection. Hairy experience for MS Centre chairman
David Wray, chairman of the Swindon Centre for Multiple Sclerosis, was nominated as one of three volunteers to win the national MS Society Award in May at London’s Royal Garden Hotel. Over the last three years David has led the Swindon Centre’s fundraising for a new home and oversaw the refurbishment and move to Bradbury House on Westmead Drive, Westlea.
