The Family Funday opens at 11.00am at Faringdon Road Park by the Mayor of Swindon. Events and activities will run at Faringdon Road Park and Swindon Town Centre through till 5.00pm. A downloadable events guide will be available week commencing 22nd June. All activities will be free of charge but collection tins will be available for donations
that will go towards the forces charities.

selling illegal goods to children, Gin McGiffin, from Oakhurst, who coordinates the Swindon branch of Chernobyl Children's Lifeline, Martha Parry, tireless campaigner to have the derelict Mechanics' Institute in the town centre returned to community use, and Mark Jones from Freshbrook who saved two of his neighbours from an attack by a mentally disturbed neighbour wielding a knife. Link publishers Roger and Ruth Ogle were nominated in recognition of their support of community development through the magazine for over 30 years. Mayor involves all in award Since 2002 when Mayor Stan Pajak launched the original Swindon Citizens Award to recognise people for their unsung contribution to the town, every following mayor tied the scheme to the local daily newspaper, thus excluding those who did not buy it. Bus Co. gets North commuters moving Commuters from North Swindon will be able to travel to and from Swindon town centre in record time from 1 June, thanks to the new Thamesdown Transport No 12. weekday express bus service. Journey times will be 35 minutes from Oakhurst, 25 minutes from Redhouse, 21 minutes from Abbey Meads and 18 minutes from St Andrew's Ridge. The Priory Vale Express will be run on a trial basis to establish the demand for the service and in some part will replace the Groundwell Park & Ride bus service which closes on 30 May. Council attempts cutbacks programme Nine Elms residents were appalled in early May to discover council workmen ripping out ornamental shrubs lining a road close to their homes, transforming a pleasant green area into a muddy patch. The workmen, equipped with a JCB, tractor and trailer, initially told locals that the reason for removing the two foot high greenery was to i mprove sight lines for traffic. They said that similar work was scheduled for other sites across West Swindon. They also said that the shrubs were being replaced with grass to reduce maintenance. But resident Stephen Cannon doubts the economics. "How an annual skim with a hedge-cutter is more expensive than cutting grass every three weeks - their estimate - is beyond my calculations." Quick intervention by Nine Elms resident and councillor Keith Williams, brought the work to a halt, but the following day the diggers returned to strip out all the remaining plants. The councillor spoke to other members of the council and a delegation visited the site. They assured homeowners that the ground would be replanted with shrubs and trees. "The level of shrub removal was unacceptable; especially considering no consultation was undertaken," said coun Williams. "I have been assured by the department responsible that no further work of this nature will be undertaken unless the director has approved it." • Kieth Williams has been appointed to Swindon Council's cabinet with responsibility for leisure following the sacking from the cabinet of fellow Shaw and Nine Elms councillor Nick Martin.

Connecting people and their places in the West The long running West Swindon Community Forum is to retain its name but has recast itself within Swindon Council's new approach to making itself more relevant at a local level as the West Swindon Cluster. Revealing metal landmarks to the public view Four large sculptures within Isambard Community School are only ever seen by the school community. Here, for the first time, Year 8 pupils Anna Scully and Vicki Egerton, below, describe how they came about. The metal statues opposite the four wings of Isambard which branch off the inside street in the middle of our school have been here for about a year and were made by abstract artist, Andy Hazel. Isambard is split into four house contributed ideas houses (earth, fire, air and water) for their statue and those _. and each house is split into two ideas were taken away classes (north and south). Because each sculpture is abstract, each person has a different interpretation of what they mean but here we describe what you see if you walk by. School to preserve history Models of The Watchers, the sculpture installed atToothill Village Centre 27 years ago, have been presented to Toothill Primary School.

The Mayor Steve Wake fi eld made an appeal in the January Link for one of the small versions presented to councillors and VIPs at the unveiling on 8 June 1982. Sculptor Pat Elmore donated a resin version which had been given away and Marion Pryor from Stratton contacted us as her son had found a cement version in the garden undergrowth of his new house, whilst artist Ken Whit uncovered the poster he designed for the opening event. In the March Link, Pat Elmore described how she worked with the late Carlton Attwood in his last months to make the finishing touches to The Watchers, using the features of her daughter Heidi, who now lives in Redhouse, and her husband to shape the faces out of cement fondue. Although the original statue has suffered from vandalism and the weather, the maquettes used to develop the full scale version are in good condition. Pat said she wasn't surprised the sculpture has suffered. "Thamesdown Council would not pay for it to be cast in
bronze. It's a commission I would like to take on to give The Watchers a permanent presence in Toothill." In the meantime,Toothill Primary headteacher Martin Cowell said he is delighted to have the models in the school. "They give the children a sense of the history about their community. I'm sure they will be used in our curriculum work in some way." f "-.-

Youngsters organised fundraising events during each school's Gambia Day, when pupils wore clothes in the colours of theGambian national flag. They also covered a map of Africa with loose change, tasted Gambian food and took part in drum workshops run by Graeme Goodwin of Rhythm Works. In May Musa Sannah, headteacher and founder of Yiriwa Nursery School in Brikama, visited Moredon to pass on the thanks of his community. "I'm really pleased to meet the children and talk to them about fundraising for our school," said MrSannah. "Moredon are also helping us with the curriculum and giving us ideas."

Mr Sannah started his school four years ago for 45 three to seven year olds who pay £10 per term. Free, state education starts when children are eight. The school is based in a rented house but building work on two classrooms is nearing completion. Last October Moredon deputy head Violet McClaren saw the aftermath of heavy rains which had washed away half the new buildings. Now rebuilt, they are very basic with no floor, water or electricity. "The children here are very
lucky," said Mr Sannah. "I feel just a li tt le bit jealous but it gives me something to aim for."

Greendown delivers global messages to Gordon As he prepared for the biggest budget day in his political career, in May, Prime Minister Gordon Brown took delivery of messages from Greendown pupils looking beyond UK problems.

Their thoughts were written on notelets decorated with colourful images of No 10 Downing Street and collected in a post box. Anne Snelgrove, MP delivered the post box to the Prime Minister a day before the budget, during a meeting also attended by Douglas Alexander, deputy international development minister. She joked that he got off lightly with a postbox as in2007 Greendown pupils took a life size cardboard teacher decorated with letters to Tony Blair. She said these issues might be sidelined at a time of global recession but it was important that education for all remained a priority. "Gordon was delighted to see that so many young people had written messages to him and to learn of the issues important to them. It was a pleasure to deliver the messages to Gordon and it is a credit to the students for organi sing
the box of letters." Year 11 pupil, Rebecca Porter, is considering working abroad during a gap year. "We take education for granted and people I know are always moaning about how long the school day is when there are people in other countries who are desperate to learn. Compared to what they have, what we have is luxury. We get fantastic education opportunities and our lives are so good." Carla Welsh, in Year 10, was shocked at the basic conditions and how little Kenyan children have when she visited a school on a family holiday. "Anne Snelgrove was reall y interested in the work Greendown is doing; it's great that she took our messages to the Prime Minister." • Four more teachers from Greendown headed for South Africa for a week from 22 May to reinforce the partnership with Moriting Wa Thuto School first established in 2004 which has seen teachers and pupils visiting each other. Some fifteen countries are represented at the school, ranging from Thailand, France, Africa, Poland and Wales and several children volunteered to talk about their different cultures to launch a week filled with art projects and visitors. Early years classes tried Indian dance and had a taste of traditional food thanks to a parent who gave a cooking demonstration. Year 3 learned about Arabic art while in Years 2 and 4 the theme was Australian aborigines and children had a go at blowing didgeridoos. Year5 were immersed in African culture, enjoying drumming and dance workshops. "Every other year we look at
other countries, enlightening the children about different cultures and broadening their knowledge," said teacher Linda Drury. "It makes them more tolerant when they meet people from other faiths and cultures, and opens up a whole new area of art. There were different highlights for each class but the visitors brought it to life." Now SATsareoutofthewayYear 6 are enjoying a week of activities based on Indonesia, including mask making and creating shadow puppets plays. Some of the art work produced will be on show at a multicultural evening to be held at Isambard School on 3 July.

Mechanics puts on the pressure The annual Faringdon Road Park children's fete run by the New Mechanics'Trust is not being organised this year to allow the volunteers to concentrate on their campaign to rescue the building. The building owned by Matthew Singh continues to deteriorate and the trust is lobbying Swindon Council to take action. Trustchairman Daniel Rose said. Mural work to get underway Swindon artist Ken White hopes to start refurbishing his famous Golden Lion mural in June, having been commissioned by Swindon Does Art to bring the work he painted in 1977 and 1983 back to life. It depicts the 19th Century bridge over the canal in the town centre, right, close to where the jubilee clock now stands. Ken, left, was featured in front of the mural in April. In the May Link we called on readers to suggest who could be included in a recreated Swindon personalities mural. j SWINDON VIEWPOINT Back in the 1950s Swindon had such bad television reception that a cable network was begun which eventually spread across the town and later became the present Virgin service. Fifty years ago the possibilities of local TV services was a glimmer, but it took until 1972 when the government licensed six local experiments and Swindon Viewpoint was set up. Of the six only Swindon's project fl ourished and Viewpoint continued to the late 1980s before funding and support from Virgin's predecessor Swindon Cable was lost.
