Something for the whole family as UK Corporate Games come to Swindon Friday 2 June to Sunday 4 June - a fab weekend of sport, music, circus and heritage Three days of great family entertainment are being organised to celebrate a massive sporting event in Swindon. The UK Corporate Games 2006 will see thousands of people descend on the town from 2 to 4 June for a weekend of competition. And to make it a great community participation event Swindon Council is organising a host of attractions at Lydiard Park which will be the huh of the games. To launch the festivities HRH the Princess Royal will visit Lydiard Park on Friday 2 June.
Bands will perform music for all tastes - from swing and jazz to the sounds of the 60s by The Overtures, and the glittery 70s from Abba tribute band The Fabbagirls. Circus acts and theatre groups will provide roaming entertainment throughout the weekend and six-piece band Weapons of Sound will run a junk percussion workshop as well as perform on stage. Combining the themes of sport and entertainment a match of Georgian cricket, complete with players in period costume, will be held on Friday 2 June.
Also on Friday youngsters aged four to 17 years have their chance to take part in a fun run at Lydiard. Competitions in 21 sports including dragon boat racing, soccer, badminton and cricket will feature at venues across Swindon. Npower, Intel and Nationwide are among the local companies taking part and Swindon Council is entering a team of almost 300, the largest by a civic authority in the games' history. Company staff with musical abilities rather than sporting prowess will be displaying their talents

Lydiard's lawns will also host a tented corporate village where companies will show off their wares and entertain guests. Glinting flags fly again atop Lydiard's turrets The three 18th Century swallow-tailed pennants or flags are now back on the turrets of Lydiard House. They were removed by local furniture restorer, Phillip Noble, who had to completely strip the flags and re-gild them with two layers of gold. This painstaking work took many hours but was essential to preserve these historic artefacts for future generations. Windmill Hill answers back Tim Poole, chairman of governors at Windmill Hill Primary School, says the campaign to keep the school open continues and wants to correct misleading statements made during the recent election campaign.
Statutory Consultation on Swindon Council's proposal to close the school concludes at the end of May and the proposal and any objections will then go before the Schools' Organisation Committee, probably sometime early in July. We were disappointed but not surprised with the decision to proceed as discussions with both Freshbrook School and the LEA had come to nothing. But we were also very concerned by the number of incorrect statements made about the school by prospective and current councillors on the doorstep in May's local election campaign. Two examples: • Governors have acted in an underhand way, not having advertised nationally as is required for a headteacher before making an appointment. Not true. We advertised on a nationally recognised education recruitment website which attracted over 380 initial enquiries. • Our academic results have been achieved by selecting children from Grange Park as opposed to Freshbrook and other areas. Not only is this insulting to people living in Freshbrook, including many
of our staff, governors and pupils, but again totally untrue. At Windmill Hill we have never selected children based on residential or ability criteria. Subject to usual sibling arrangements we have always filled on a first come first served basis. Our admissions are managed / monitored by Swindon LEA. Of our 205 children, some 115 come from Freshbrook, 58 from Grange Park, 14 from Toothill and 18 from other areas. We are all for robust politics but misinformation, and publicjudgements on individual members of staff, have no place in this debate. Parents of Windmill Hill continue the campaign with a trip to London to present to the Minister of State for Education and Skills a 1,200 signature petition to save the school. Windmill Hill School has been consistently successful and is currently in the top five schools in the borough as measured by SAT results. We believe it is only right that this success and strong leadership within the school are recognised in any reorganisation plans. The LEA appears to believe otherwise.

A larger, circular building will be constructed on an adjacent site at the end of Ridge Green, to cater for a larger annual intake of 240 children, including those who would have attended Salt Way Primary in Middleleaze. After a long battle Salt Way parents and school governors were unable to persuade Swindon Council and the independent Schools' Organisation Committee from pursuing a plan to rationalise school places in the area and Salt Way will close in July. Salt Way parents were welcomed at a meeting in early April by Shaw Ridge headteacher Sally Cowell to discuss how the school operates and to look at the plans for the new build with council officers. Unfortunately, in the council's rush to close Salt Way this year, 9 mobiles are to be erected on the Shaw Ridge playground for the children who will transfer in September.

Mrs Cowell told parents that a lot of planning had been going on by staff at both schools to ensure work topics covered were similar so that children arriving at Shaw Ridge did not repeat parts of the curriculum. "Because of uneven numbers and odd sized classes Shaw Ridge children are very used to change every year," she said. "Five more teachers have been appointed. The whole school will be reorganised to ensure all the children are fully integrated and because nearly every room is going to have a different use. Nursery expands to run day care for Sure Start Headstarts Nurseries, based at Westlea, is to run the day care provision in a new purpose built children's centre at Robert le Kyng Primary School off Westcot Road from September. Children's Centres are an extension of the existing Sure Start Programme and provide care, information and support for families of children under 5. They are part of the government's 10 year childcare strategy which aims to give all families access to affordable, flexible, high quality childcare. The new Headstarts day care nursery on the Robert le Kyng site is due to open in September. People have tears in their eyes to know somebody cares for them." Swindon Wide Flower festival in the park
The flower displays in St Mary's Church, Lydiard Park are always spectacular and this year's festival, from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 June, 1 Oam to 5pm, will no doubt match those in the past. The year the theme is A Festival of Weddings to celebrate marriage as a sign of unity and loyalty which enriches society and strengthens community, Some twenty displays around the historic church, identified by writer Simon Jenkins as one of the best in Britain and featured in his TV programme, will portray many different anniversaries, not only the well known waymarks of diamond, silver and gold, but also those that are passed along the way like
paper, tin and leather. See the displays organised by the church flower guild, local groups and schools, and learn about the anniversaries as well. The church holds it annual summer fair with lots of stalls outside the church, next to the drive to Lydiard House from the Grange Park entrance on Saturday 24 June, 1.30pm to 3.30pm. All proceeds go towards the considerable cost of maintaining the building.

The opening day on Saturday 24 June will be a mix and match. Looking back to the glorious achievements of Brunel on the 200th anniversary of his birth, with celebrations and entertainment in Wood Street on a Victorian theme from 11am to 4pm. Closeby in the Godwin Court car park, there will be a World Cup human tabletop football league kicking off at 9.30am. This takes place on a giant inflatable football pitch with some 128 real life players taking part during the day. There will also be street entertainment, children's rides and a farmers' market. In the evening local bands will play in the Town Gardens Bowl. Throughout the following week there are plans for guided walks, a performance by Tanwood School of Dance, Swindon Society images of the past slide show and a choir concert on The Lawn.

The annual golf day to raise money for Swindon Cancer and Leukaemia Movement takes place on Thursday 22 June at the Wrag Barn course at Highworth. A range of competitions are being organised with top prize, sponsored by the De Vere Hotel, of a round of golf for four with lunch at the famous Belfry course. CALM is run entirely by parent volunteers who provide support and comfort to children and also their families, during treatment, when a child goes into remission, or if there is a bereavement. It also provides convalescent breaks in two seaside caravans, organises coach trips and social gatherings, and finances a family support worker and social worker. Fundraising for world class kickboxer Seven year old Ryan Embling from Toothill has won his way through to the WUMA world kickboxing championships in July and his parents are raising £1,200 to get him to Malta where they take place. An auction on 9 June, 7pm to 11pm, at Swindon Rugby Club in Greenbridge will see donations from Swindon business go under the hammer, towards the cost of entry and travel. Community Education Development Officer, Roxy Cox, said, "we're letting the grass grow tall
pathways into it for the children to run in. By summer, we can look forward to seeing wildflowers planted by John Ball from FAB Flowers and Butterflies. Roxy praised all involved for their hard work. "We're very grateful to Neil Pullen from the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and also all the parents, especially the dads, who have worked so hard. There's been great community spirit around the project; I'm really pleased for the volunteers that they won the award." The school is buying pond dipping equipment and possibly some sun shades.
