Let the council know your plans Although Swindon Council has scrapped their nominal charge of £50 for closing a street, they still have to assess requests to close a public highway and issue a legal closure notice order if they consider the site suitable. A council spokeswoman said it was too late to request the closure of a through road, as diversionary signs have to be specially made and erected. Where residents request the use of a cul de sac she said council officers will do everything possible to process the application, but cannot guarantee that there will be enough time before jubilee weekend. Exciting year ahead as Mayor Stan takes over Stan Pajak looks forward to his year as Mayor of Swindon I first became a councillor way back in 1985 amid Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister, the miners' strike and the rise of the SDP/Liberal Alliance as a political force. How times have changed! My career in politics stemmed from community involvement on local issues and a love for the town I was born in. Becoming mayor of Swindon is a wonderful honour for both me and my family. The classic image of a mayor as an elderly, large person all dressed in red with a nice set of chains has been radically changed in Swindon. The book that puts pounds back into pockets As the benefits available for older people increase, the need for up-to-date information becomes even more essential. Fortunately, each year Age Concern publishes Your Rights, a must-have handbook to help older people claim the money benefits they are entitled to. Your Rights is written by Sally West, one of the country's leading experts on the benefits system for older people. The annual publication provides just the information you need to boost your weekly income. Age Concern Swindon is now inviting older people's organisations to apply for grants of up to £500 to help with their expenses, start up new projects or develop ideas. Many Link readers will have been following the BBCTV coverage of Ian Stillman's trial in India. Who is he? What does he do? Ian is profoundly deaf (he hears literally nothing) and also, a few years ago, he lost a leg as a result of a road accident. Despite these disabilities, his strong social conscience and determined character have led him to pioneer important work among the deaf in India. Together with his Indian wife, Yesumani, Ian has set up a training centre called Nambikkai in the South of India, for deaf adults, where they learn how to communicate, cook, farm and other skills essential to independent living. Ian has even arranged marriages for some. Deaf people in India are often regarded as stupid, incapable of learning and a liability to their family – but Ian's work at the training centre shows people that the deaf can contribute as much to their family and village as anyone else. Ian and Yesumani have also been instrumental in setting up a new charity, DeafChild India. There was a major conference in India concerning this charity, at the time of Ian's arrest. He has been in prison for nearly two years now – on a spurious

charge of drug smuggling. The courts have refused to believe that Ian is profoundly deaf; even the Supreme Court in India has refused to look at the medical evidence that proves Ian's deafness. The Indian police have stated that Ian is a wanted criminal, hunted by Interpol. Of course, Interpol has denied this. It is a travesty.

Teacher Tim Noble said the Shakespeare project has brought together strands of work that have been developing in Swindon over a number of years. "The West Swindon Shakespeare Festival in 2000, which involved 15 primary schools, secondary schools and local colleges, gave us the confidence to explore new ways of learning Shakespeare. "Most adults remember Shakespeare as dry and boring. Now children aged seven to sixteen are expected by the national curriculum to study Shakespeare; teaming up with Neil and his experience of early years' literacy was a natural link to make. "The aim is to make Shakespeare accessible by getting children physically involved in the plays, exploring the characters through the puppets to build an understanding of the Right, trying out the prototype board game, Greendown parent Judith Blake, who has been helping the project, and designers James Wells and Matthew Bonny with Oliver Tomkins infants Abigail Lloud and Sam Green

National Carers Week 10 to 16 June The aim of National Carers Week is to celebrate the cont ri bution the UK's 6 million carers make to their fami li es and communities, w ri tes Gillian Barber, coordinator of the P ri ncess Royal Trust for Carers, known in Swindon as FOCUS. In Swindon some 18,000 people care for a partner, friend or relative who is unable to manage alone, with some 4,000 of them devoting over fifty hours a week to this selfless activity. Working on their behalf is FOCUS, where a wide range of services to support people with caring responsibilities is available. Offering one to one support, information, a respire care service delivered by trained and caring staff, held, and advice, FOCUS staff also work constantly to improve local services for carers. Through consultation with carers and working with Health and Social Services, FOCUS aims to ensure that carers' views are represented and their needs are taken into consideration in all planning and provision of se rv ices in Swindon. A wide variety of activities will be held by carers' organisations throughout the UK to celebrate National Carers Week. Do you remember Sean Terrell and his tragic death on 28 June 2000 when he crashed on his motorbike? Were you at his funeral the following week? Would you like to honour his memory? On Sunday 14 July a party is being organised in Swindon to celebrate his life. Some of his biking friends will travel on theback roads to Wantage and Newbury and meet up with non-biking friends at a pub for a barbecue. "This will be a happy, positive event," says his mother Jackie, who is organising the get-together. "Sean will probably be looking down on everybody, grinning and saying 'Go for it and have a good time for me.'

Former Steps members Claire and H have come together as a duo and will be making a return to the Wiltshire Festival on Sunday 25 August, after the band's excellent show in 2000. • Simon Grennan lives near Brighton and Christopher Sperandio in Manhattan. Since 1995 they have developed comic book and more recently in digital video animation projects in conjunction with museums in the US and Europe for broadcast, webcast and print. They have recently worked with New York's Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with DC Comics, created an animated series for MTV and have worked in Britain on regeneration projects in Moss Side and Hulme. and in Gateshead.

I07fm% everybody's listening! fter a highly successful month long trial broadcast last year, as required by the Radio Authority, Swindon 107FM returns for a second trial to reinforce the positive support we A achieved last time. Swindon 107FM was born out of a genuine passion to establish a real local radio station - broadcasting good music, as well as news and information about Swindon and Swindon people. The dream goes back well over 10 years ago when Rikki Hunt, then Chairman of Swindon Town Football Club, first identified the need for a local station. Last year, with Ray Butt, the driving force behind the first Swindon Jazz Festival, this became a reality. Sean McHugh then joined them to help manage the running of trial broadcasts.

Local presenters, local news When it goes on air from new studios in the Brunel Centre at the end of June, Swindon 107FM will have a host of local talent to present its shows, moving closer to our aim of creating a `totally Swindon' radio station. The `sound of Swindon 107FM' will encompass music based around classic tracks from the last 40 years, including specialist shows each evening featuring Jazz, Blues, Soul and Country & Western, and also local news and views. Also on air will be 'What's On' information, `Swindon Recruitment' and information on health and fitness, as well as interviews with personalities who have recently visited or appeared in Swindon. Freshbrook dentist close to putting smiles on faces in Ukraine Freshbrook dentist Brendon Ball and colleague Richard Swift set off on another ambitious mercy mission to the Ukraine in late July. Three years ago they delivered dental equipment and materials, and provided up-to-date training for local dentists in the city of Cherkassy in Ukraine. Their plan to return last year with a

mobile dental unit for use in the region around the city which is as big as Wales, where dental services are non-existant could not be realised. But they have been able to raise more money and have set up a charity called Smile Menders to channel the effort and spread the workload. On board is well known Swindon councillor Maurice Fanning, a patient for several years, who will be spreading the message about the charity to businesses.

Also helping is John Stapleton, managing director of Glenpac Southern in Cricklade whose staff are re-insulating and refurbishing the unit so that it can be used as a health facility, even in the harshest of Ukraine winters. "I was Brendon's neighbour a few years ago but we lost contact," said John. "My wife saw an article about Brendon's trip to Ukraine in The Link last year and we were able to get back in touch. We're glad to be contributing our skills." Brendon is still desperately searching for the right vehicle to tow the unit, at the right price. As a practical response to the problem Wiltshire St John Ambulance is offering a free two hour course to provide the basic skills to perform cardio pulmonary resuscitation. The Breath of Life courses are being organised at St John centres and the organisation is keen to hear from community groups, churches or schools willing to host a course in their area. To help get as many people trained as possible, the Swindon Primary Care Trust (PCG) has donated 20 resuscitation dummies so that course members can develop the right techniques to deal with a heart attack. Summer sports weeks in Grange Park Greendown School is planning two weeks of summer holiday activities where youngsters can try out new sports, develop their skills and have fun in a safe, low cost environment. Called The Great Escape and aimed at 9 to 13 year olds from any part of the town, the scheme takes place 29 July to 2 August and 5 to 9 August, 9.30am and 3pm daily. The plans for this commercial site at junction 5 at Ash Brake have been public for nearly 10 years and therefore the 250 residents objecting to the land use, as reported in the May Link, should have made themselves familiar with them before they purchased their homes. They should have considered that the price they were paying for their properties reflected this pending development. They should have chosen a different location if they didn't want to be near this enhancement to the local facilities which other residents and their children are eagerly looking forward to.

I am fed up with the moans from Abbey Meads about the dualling of Thameswood Drive which also has had planning permission from the outset of the development. It is a disgrace that it wasn't constructed initially to save months of grief and delay to motorists negotiating the current road works. What's happened to the environmentally friendly roundabouts being replaced by unfriendly traffic lights? These cause more exhaust fumes and accidents as they are based on the cross over in front of oncoming traffic, copying the much maligned Groundwell experiment.

With all the litter strewn around, West Swindon is becoming a real mess and it's getting worse. Don't just blame the children, they follow the examples set by their parents. I do a lot of walking and wherever I go, there is litter everywhere, including used nappies. Disposable does not mean throw it under a hedge. As a child I was taught that any litter, such as sweet wrappers, crisp packets, drink cans, either went into a nearby litter bin or I took it home. It's a pity a lot of other people didn't have the same sort of upbringing. Will people ever stop to think of the environment, or is that too much to hope for?

I attended the Hayden Wick Safeway and Post Office customers meeting on 23 April to question the implications of Safeway's intention to close the post office located on their premises. It became clear that Safeway have no community spirit and fail to realise that the essential Hayden Wick Post Office attracts customers to their store and in doing so ignore competition from other stores. Closing the Post Office and creating more space for carpets, domestic appliances and garden items is not what shoppers want. Customer interest isprimarilycentred on using the Post Office and buying food - the premier profit

selling point of Safeway. My household, along with many others will continue to use the Post Office at Haydon Wick Safeway, but our usual expenditure of £90 £100 per month on Safeway food products, newspapers and magazines will cease and be spent elsewhere. Safeway have shot themselves in the foot over this issue and until the busy Post Office is retained in the Hayden Wick store, customer losses will inevitably mount to the detriment of that store's financial viability. The lesson for Safeway is to refrain from telling customers what the store thinks is right, and listen to what the customer wants.
