Partners in Time Intercity 125 diesel engines pulling out of Swindon station and the historic GWR workshops form the backdrop for an open air world premiere performance of 'Partners in Time' on 21 June. Performed by the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, joined by 250 local musicians from the Pegasus Brass Band, Swindon Choral Society and Swindon Young Musicians, the symphony celebrates the town's history and status as a unitary authority. The evening also includes well-known orchestral melodies, ending with Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture accompanied by a blaze of fireworks. Ticket booking details can be found on page 5.

A story in The Link magazine has moved Swindon based skating partners Marsha Poloulaschenko and Andrew Seabrook to offer their help to an ambitious project to provide surgery for children in the Ukraine born with a cleft palate or cleft lip. In the March Link, Stephanie Glennie from Westlea wrote about the plight of children in the Ukraine born with cleft palate or cleft lip who are abandoned in orphanages with little hope of surgical attention. Grange Park parent Sue Vernon wrote in May of how her baby James is receiving the best medical attention possible here. NowBritish & Scottish pairs junior champions and senior pairs runners-up Marsha and Andrew want to help. Speaking before she returned to the Ukraine to visit her family, Marsha said, "1 really feel sorry for the children; we would like to help in some way." Dentaid is bringing two Ukrain-

A term of activity studying industry at Tregoze School in Grange Park ended with a successful industry day attended by parents and business people on 23 May. Each class adopted a business to visit and study using national curriculum subjects. Representatives from companies also came into school to talk to children and advise on practical work. Firefighters from Westlea station showed off their fire engine and Thamesdown Transport brought in a double decker. Peter Wescombe's class set up a production line so that children could understand the processes involved in making cars.

People registered with Ashington Way doctors surgery will benefit from two new projects. Margaret Smith, pictured right above, is a carer support worker with Health Matters. She meets anybody involved in the care of someone who is frail, elderly, disabled, or looking after a child with an illness or disability. She has an information pack, acts as an advocate for carers and can introduce them to a support group. She can be contacted on 531133. Barbara Dixon, left above, coordinates the Swindon Womens Art Group who have been awarded £4,750 by the Arts for Everyone lottery scheme to develop new artwork on the theme of health. There will be a permanent exhibition in the surgery and Barbara would like to hear from patients interested in becoming involved in any kind of artistic activity. She can be contacted on 790925. Both agreed that their work could be extended as a result of meeting each other for the Link photo.
From its small beginnings at Westlea School, the storysack initiative has been hugely successful and enthusiastically received throughout the country. Such has been the interest in the concept that it is now studied as part of the English syllabus at Oxford Brookes University and teacher training establishments introduce story sacks to their student teachers. Interest has now extended beyond these shores and the sack projects have been established in the USA, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and Australasia. Neil is amazed at the rapid development of what he describes as such a simple idea. "In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined such worldwide interest in an initiative that was aimed at promoting literacy in our local area." He paid tribute to the parents at Westlea School who made the first storysacks for the project's success. "The concept is simple, yet simple ideas are often the most effective. But the amount of imagination in creating the sacks is tremendous and captures the interest of child and parent. The creativity of the parents who made the sacks has been an inspiration to people all over the country. Jam indebted to them for their skill, enthusiasm and dedication to the project." Clearly leaving Westlea School after many years to tackle this new challenge will be a wrench for Neil. "It is a time of very mixed feelings. Westlea School is my life and it has been a privilege to work alongside such delightful children, highly committed staff and supportive parents. I will miss the school very much but relish the challenge and experiences a national developmentproject such as this will offer. "Opportunities of this nature don't happen very often and lintend to make the very most of it."

Go ahead for new school The long awaited primary school for Roughmoor has been approved, but it might not be ready for the first children until 1999. Swindon Council's education committee considered a report on 15 May to spend £1.48 million on the school to be built adjacent to the village centre site, north of Peatmoor Lagoon. It will be built to enlarged space specifications in order to provide community facilities to be used outside school hours. The design will separate school and community rooms and incorporate features to ensure the security of children and staff. A school for Abbey Meads costing £1.66 million, built along similar lines, was also agreed. Government approval to borrow half the money to build the Roughmoor school was gained last December. However a Swindon spokesman said a start date had not been identified. The project
may run in tandem with the Abbey Meads school which is not expected to start until next year, with completion in 1999. Brook Field headteacher Roger Nicholas said he was happy with the decision to build and paid tribute to Swindon Council's willingness to listen to local people. "I am also pleased for the Brook Field Parents Action Group. They have worked hard to put our needs before Wiltshire County Council and Swindon over the last two years." Mr Nicholas expressed concern about undue delay in starting construction. "We are presently coping with the children from Roughmoor. Yet I would urge the council to quickly respond to the needs of families already living in the Brook Field area."

Steve Brown was elected as the new chairman at the Residents' Association AGM held on 12 May. Bob Bauld, the retiring chairman has made a significant contribution over the last seven years including being the driving force behind the Shaw Fun Days PC Packer, the new community beat officer, came to the meeting and described how his new role was intended to give continuity to local policing There has been long standing concern about safety along Cartwright Drive, especially when children are arrive and leave Brook Field School. The association has already held a useful meeting at which senior police officers and an officer from Swindon Council's
transport department participated in a productive discussion. A road safety event, probably on 2 July, will focus on this specific issue. More news in next month's Link. The Association meets on the first Monday of the month (not Bank Holidays) at 8pm in the Community Hall in Pilgrim Close (behind Shaw shops). Do come along.

Reading and writing success to receive Royal recognition Greendown is one of only twelve schools in England and Wales to be selected to receive a Quality Mark from the Basic Skills Agency, the first time such an award has been made by the organisation. Representatives from the school have been invited to Buckingham Palace in June to receive the citation from the Princess Royal. Given after an exacting range of conditions had been met, the award is designed to promote continuing improvement in basic literacy and numeracy. Andy Russell, Greendown head of support, said the Quality Mark recognises the extra work put into raising achievement above and beyond the national curriculum. Headteacherlan Matthews said, "We're very pleased that our drive for quality through targetting each student has been rewarded."

As I collected my first post from the House of Commons mailroom, two Conservatives who had lost their seats were saying their goodbyes. One was talking like someone who had just gone through a painful divorce. 'I suppose I'll get used to it. I'll just have to say, right it's happened and now I must get on with the rest of my life.' It is easy to see why outgoing MPs should feel a sense a loss. The architecture is magnificent and the facilities are splendid. The library is the best I have ever been in, with an outstanding service. Within half an hour, they were able to give me with a comprehensive list of government grants to industry. All the grand opening ceremonies, the election of the Speaker and the State Opening of Parliament are designed to make new MPs feel part of a great and con-
tinuing tradition. And that sense of history is powerfully reinforced by being part of a landmark Labour victory. But for all the pageantry and splendour and the sense of history, the House of Commons is still just a place of work. It exists to enable all MPs to serve their constituencies as effectively as possible and that is what I stood for Parliament to do. And, although the magnificent architecture does not guarantee a new office will be waiting for new MPs, I have begun to believe that it might be possible to use it as a base to get things done for North Swindon.

One of the most pressing problems we face in Swindon is the plight of Princess Margaret Hospital. So on my second day I put in for an Adjournment Debate about it and I was given one a week later. Such debates enable backbenchers to raise matters of concern to their constituents with Ministers and to get full replies. I invited my colleague from South Swindon, Julia Drown to share the debate with me. Together we gained assurances from the Minister about speeding up a decision on a new hospital and the opportunity to have an early meeting with him to keep matters moving forward. The fact that I was able to get such a debate so early on in the new Parliament and that the Minister was so positive in his response has greatly encouraged me about how it might be possible to use the House of Commons to get things done for Swindon. Now all I need is a desk and a telephone...

I would like to thank all those who put their trust in me and the Labour Party and gave me the honour of being able to represent South Swindon in Parliament. I am delighted to be the first women ever to represent Swindon. I am sure the presence of so many women MPs will help to make Parliament a better place. Letters addressed to 'Julia Drown MP' started arriving on 2 May. It is a wonderful experience being a new MP and it has taken me some time to get used to the title. The Palace of Westminster is a warren; miles of corridors carrying a great sense of our history. Within four days of being elected, I set up an office in the constituency to reply to the huge number of letters I am getting everyday. But MPs are still waiting to move into offices at Westminster. I sense a great feeling of optimism across the nation. There is a willingness to make changes and to create a more inclusive society, in which we all have opportunities, rather than the divided society we have seen in recent years. The new Labour Government has lost no time in taking action.
To ensure long term interest rate stability, to keep interest rates as low as possible and to keep inflation within the Government's target, we have given the Bank of England operational responsibility for setting interest rates. The Queen's Speech set out the 22 bills we will put before Parliament to tackle such pressing issues as large class sizes, the problems in the Health Service, youth and long-term unemployment, crime and homelessness. I made my first speech in the House of Commons the day after the Queen's Speech - on healthcare in Swindon. We badly need a solution to the uncertainty over the development of Princess Margaret Hospital. That message was passed onto Ministers loudly and clearly. I will be continuing to work hard on this and the many other issues that constituents have raised with me; issues I know we need to tackle to improve opportunities and facilities in South Swindon. Swimmers rewarded for taking part in sponsored swim West Swindon Lions presented certificates on 13 May to swimmers who took part in a sponsored swim in February. Youngsters from local Brownie and Boys Brigade groups and adult helpers took part at the Link Centre pool.

Some unusual goings on take place at Lydiard Park on Saturday 14 June, 10am to 1pm, when staff dressed in period costume are holding an open morning. Swindon snapped Dozens of Swindonians of all ages clicked camera shutters on Friday 16 May to capture local lives, favourite items and self-portraits as part of a photography project to capture lives in a day. The results will be on display in the Faces of Swindon Exhibition which will show off at least one photo' from each set of shots submitted to the Media Arts studios. The exhibition will be mounted in the Brunel shopping centre from 9 t 14 June and then move to the Bath Road Art Gallery until the end of July. The entries will be archived as a record for use in future years.

der another?' And the people of Swindon will have the answer. At dawn on May day almost two hundred gathered in Lawn Woods to see the sun rise over the town's rooftops, to hear stories, to dance round a maypole and to witness the amazing antics of the Chipolatas. Election day had started okay, the Lit Fest way. By the time a new Government swept in, scores of Festival followers had already enjoyed a feast of literary treats - poetry from a snooker player, stories from a magician and jokes from a man with flaming ears. But perhaps the event of greatest significance during the first week took place before an audience of three in a hospital bedroom. A storyteller and pipe player performed for 6 year old Adam Oldland who was in a coma at PMH following a road accident.
Their tales and tunes produced encouraging signs of life and brought new hope to his parents. It was a very moving occasion. During the second week, bigger names appeared. Tony Benn took centre stage at the Arts Centre. Puffing away on his pipe he entertained a packed house with topical tales from the world of politics and beyond. When asked about women in Parliament he said it would make a nice change from men's meetings as so much time is spent appointing a chairman, a vice and officers, and creating agen-
das. Women, he said, sit down, say hello, and get to the point. The Festival concluded with a brilliant afternoon of children's performances of stories and poems; and the first Swindon Slam!, a live and lively cabaret poetry competition that wowed a full house at the Town Hall. As the poet predicted: Swindon in the spring will spring a few surprises, which the Literature Festival's poetry Slam! kind of epitomises. And will again next year, starting on 1 May, as the sun rises, of course.

Village goes into into print Lydiard Millicent villagers have collected a cornocopia of nostalgic stories, amusing anecdotes, fun pages and puzzles under the title Lydiard Life which was published on 26 May. Sixty nine villagers and friends have contributed to the book, including former champion speedway rider Mike Broadbank who expresses the wish to meet the surgeon who saved his leg from amputation, only to find the medical man had also written a piece. There is an article by a war time evacuee to the village and a
contribution from a lady whose father was a German prisoner of war in Lydiard House. Anyone who produces a copy of Lydiard Life at the Running Horse on Wootton Bassett Road will get 20% off a meal because of a fascinating and true murder mystery in the book. Wootton Bassett Brass comprises of brass andpercussioninstrumentalists and is led by Graham New, a peripatetic brass teacher with many years of playing and conducting experience. Putting the home computer to good educational use Andy Russell considers software for the discerning child (and parent)
So, you've got you new personal computer, with its 'massive software bundle,' but now it's time to buy some new programmes - with educational benefits of course. Which should you go for? Which will help the kids at school? Where can you buy the best? There is a large choice of educational software, for Apple Macintosh and PC computers, both on disc and CD-ROM, but don't be fooled by slick presentation. Some programmes are a lot better than others. Remember too the programmes cannot be a replace-
ment for teaching. At best they will reinforce the things that your children are learning in school. A good programme will maintain the user's interest and motivate them to improve. The selection mentioned here are based on arcade style games - the game play provides the interest and the scores provide the motivation. There is an excellent series of educational software available from Ten Out Of Ten. They are cheap (about £10 per programme), British and national curriculum linked. They have a
series covering many. subjects, including English, spelling, number, French, German and Spanish as well as Junior Essentials. Their Talking Books is highly recommended for motivating children aged 2 10 with reading. They also publish Maths Workshop, an all singing, all dancing maths programme. An alternative is the

Others to look out for are Word Munchers (like Pacman with phonics!) as well as Storybook Weaver and Creative Writer - two quite different programmes that help to stimulate writing. For general knowledge the Dorling Kindersley series is hard to beat. One final point - software for Apple computers is abundant, but you'll need to go mail order. Rainbows celebrate 10 years Over sixty Rainbow Guides and leaders came together at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw on 9 May to celebrate the launch of the first Rainbow group in West Swindon ten years ago. They enjoyed games, singing, making birthday cards and head gear before sharing a cake. Rainbow leader Jane Bowden said, "Rainbow units

Girls jump for charity Guides, Brownies and Rainbows groups across West Swindon will be skipping for all they are worth at the Greendown School sports hall on 22 June. Around 250 youngsters are raising cash in aid of the British Heart Foundation and organiser Liz Szymczak is hoping for over £1,000.
Jump rope for adults Liz Szymczak from Freshbrook has been running jump rope workshops at Freshbrook School for 6 to fourteen year olds since April. The children, who practice on Wednesdays and Fridays between 4pm and 5pm, have already been booked to do four demonstrations at local fetes. Liz now wants to start an adult jump rope workshop on Sunday mornings with the hope of forming a demonstration team. "Jump rope is great for fitness and fun," she said. "There are lots of techniques to learn, and we will design our own routines." If you are over 14 and want to join in, give Liz Szymczak a call on 486112.

You can make a dramatic improvement in understanding your partner by starting your sentence with 'I feel,' rather than 'you make me feel', or 'if only you would'. This way you will think about what you really do feel, and stop blaming your partner for problems you may need to deal with yourself. You may feel that you know your partner well, perhaps too well. But during counselling, Relate counsellors often find that couples discover surprising things about each other. Even simple things like favourite food can be a revelation. Surprise is valuable in a relationship. It shows that both partners are willing to learn new things about each other. Try surprising your partner today. Tell them something you admire about them, or a secret desire of your own. You never know, it might be a first step to taking a balloon ride, or even bungee Jumping. • Tough enough? 'There's more to life' is the title of Luis Palau's mission to Bristol and the west from 4 to 14 June. Luis Palau is a famous evangelist; he has led many missions to Great Britain and other countries, and through them many people have come to know Jesus Christ as their saviour, Lord and friend. More than 500 churches in Bristol and the west are supporting this mission, including a number of churches across Swindon. Luis Palau will be in Swindon on Monday 9 June, 7.30pm at the Oasis. He will also be at Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol at 7.30pm on 11, 12, 13, and 14 June. The meeting on Friday 13 June will be particularly suitable for young people. There will be a mega fun factory event for children at Ashton Gate on Saturday 14 June at 1030am. Entrance to all meetings is free. Do come along to one of these events. National Writers' Conference in Swindon The Fellowship of Christian Writers has chosen West Swindon as the venue for its summer conference on 5 July. Under the title How do they do that? there will be workshops on how to write biography, poetry, TV and radio scripts and how to represent good and evil in fiction.
