to the Wiltshire County Council seat in contention on the same day. Maureen Caton (Lab) was returned to the council for the Moredon Ward with 1472 votes in a 28.4% turnout. Elsewhere Bob Pixton from Freshbrook was returned to Thamesdown Council after a three year absence, this time representing Whitworth ward. Freshbrook resident and former councillor for the area Sue Bates, now representing Gorse Hill, was elected as the first woman leader of the council after Tony Mayer decided to retire from representing Haydon Wick. And next year Swindon will take over all local government responsibilities from May 1997. All council seats will be up for contention in May 1996 for the new 'shadow authority.' It should be a busy year for the political parties as they try to impress the electorate of their credentials to run the new unitary council. Songs to remember VE Day A troupe of Townwomens Guild songsters performed wartime favourites at Toothill Community Centre's yE Day party on Monday 8 May. Musical director Joan Furlong played and sang the numbers at forces dances when she served in the WAAF between 1942 and 1944,

but had difficulty finding the words for her group to sing this time around. She did not celebrate on yE Day 50 years ago. Instead she went for a long walk thinking about her husband Lesley in Italy with the RAF. She did not see him until he was demobbed in 1948.

When children at Toothill's Oliver Tomkins Junior School heard that former teacher Bridget Osborne had a twelve week premature baby, they decided to contribute part of their Lent collection to the PMH Special Baby Care Unit. Mrs Osborne visited the school in early May to tell the children about her experiences and to show off baby Joanna who was 2.2 lbs at birth. Parents, staff and children at Toothill School spent several day during May sprucing up their school grounds. The school has started a ten year plan to develop the school grounds into an outdoor learning environment. Thousands of trees are to be planted and pathways and flower beds created. Flower beds were dug on National School Grounds Day in early May. Two further digging days were held during BT Environmental Week from 22 to 26 May to spread topsoil on the beds. Muscle power was again in evidence on 25 May when a pile of woodchippings were wheelbarrowed and spread on a new path leading to the school' pond. Three tables and benches were also moved into position to make an outdoor classroom. Although they look like wood, the furniture is entirely plastic and very heavy to deter thieves.

Grange Park residents have ignored an invitation to take part in Swindon's first large scale recycling project. High ratings for Westlea school A report on Westlea School by inspectors from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) is described by Wiltshire County primary school advisor Ian Bennett as 'one of the very best inspection reports ever.' The inspection, carried out in March says 'Westlea School provides good education for its pupils and plays an important part in the community. The headteacher effectively leads a team of highly

committed, conscientious teachers, support staff and governors. The school receives excellent support from many adults in the community which extends the educational opportunities it can provide.'

One hundred and twenty four lessons were observed and the inspectors found that teaching and learning was satisfactory or better in 100% of all lessons at Reception and Key Stage 1 (infant) level, 79% of which were good or very good.

Last village centre plans nearly ready Plans for a village centre at Roughmoor should be public in a few weeks. They were expected in May but were delayed. The long awaited village centre, next to the Chinese Experience restaurant on the north side of Peatmoor Lagoon, will contain a pub, convenience shops and a site for a community centre. Thamesdown Council first displayed proposals for a village centre at public consultation meetings in 1990. However the recession dampened interest from potential tennants. Now that the last two hundred houses will soon be built at

Roughmoor, a developer and teneants are ready to commit themselves to the facilities. A council spokesman said last minute commercial problems had arisen. 'Were disappointed that the plan has not been submitted. I expect it to be put forward for consideration by the planning committee in a few weeks." He gave an assurance that there would be public consultation as part of the process of obtaining planning approval. Building work could start in the summer and the village centre could be open within twelve months.

With summer arriving and thoughts turning to holidays, it seems apt that the Garden Society will be popping overseas for the subject of the next meeting at the Haydon Centre on Tuesday 27 June, 730pm. Members should be in for a fascinating evening as guest speaker Mamie Beasant is giving a talk on life in Saudi Arabia. The meeting is open to anyone interested in the society.

Record cash raised Well done to Emmanuel Church Women's Thursday Group who raised a record-breaking E1,350 for charity during 1994, a best ever total for the group. Last summer the group donated £200 to the Wiltshire Children's Holiday Scheme to pay for a trip to Cricket St Thomas theme park. At the groups Christmas carol service cheques for £575 were presented to both the Swindon Healthy Hearts Scheme and the Sadler Unit for handicapped small children. An athlete from Hreod Parkway School hopes to capture a national title in July. Year 11 student Adrian Jefferies, pictured above, has developed a talent for triple jump and has dominated Wiltshire Schools competitions over the last two seasons. He took fifth place in the English School championships last year, jumping against boys a year older. A member of Swindon Athletics Club, Adrian broke the Wiltshire under 17s record on 13 May and is aiming for a top placing in July's national schools championships.

House builders in the northern sector are celebrating the first 100 sales since the development was launched last August. Forty families have moved into the Abbey Meads area, most coming from within or close to Swindon. The Haydon Development Company is

currently drawing up plans for a village centre to serve Abbey Meads which will include convenience shops, a community hall, health centre and floodlit all-weather sports surface. Some 10,000 homes are to built over the next 15 years.

Players and supporters from rival West Swindon football clubs based at Greendown School travelled to Melksham on Sunday 7 May to meet in the final of the Mid-Wilts Youth League cup final. A single goal saw AFC Greendown under lOs take the cup from league winners Shaw PC. AFC Greendown under 12s also reached their cup final in the same league but were beaten 4-0 to a much stronger league winning Corsham team. In the Vale League, AFC Greendown under us lost their final in extra time against Stratton youth.

West Side United, another club based at Greendown also produced cup final teams in the Swindon & District League. The under 12s Saturday team completed an unbeaten season, winning league and the cup competitions. The Sunday under 12s came sixth in their league. The under 13s were runners up

Satellite sixth in the west set for September opening College, school and business cooperate to develop technology education Swindon's New College and Greendown Community School are set to launch education into the next century with the opening of the West Swindon Technology Centre at the school in September. The project will provide high quality information technology education to students of all ages. New College principal Mary Sellars welcomed the agreement to develop educational opportunities. "This level of cooperation between a school and a Further Education College is unique in Wiltshire and possibly the coun-

try. We are confident we will be teaching the kind of skills needed in the future. This is a very exciting project which will benefit the whole community." Twenty computers and engineering equipment are to be sited at Greendown and New College staff will teach information technology and General National Vocational Qualification courses in West Swindon. A one year GNVQ Intermediate Level Engineering will be the first course and further technology courses will be developed.

Greendown headteacher Ian Matthews said, "there is a national need to improve technology and science education. This initiative creates continuity between school and college and will allow sixth form education to take place in West Swindon. Roger Ogle, chair of Greendown governors, said, "The opening of the West Swindon Technology Centre in the school's tenth year will provide quality technology education for the 21st Century."

Ofsted spotlight on Ridgeway Ridgeway School has been complimented by inspectors from the governments Office for Standards in Education for providing a good education and having a good reputation in the local community. An inspection team visited the 1,335 pupil 11 to 18 school during the last week of April. The report says that 'standards achieved in relation to age are at least satisfactory and frequently good in all subjects. Those achieved in PE are particularly good.' The GCSE results for the last academic year are significantly better than national averages for year 11 pupils and are an improvement on those of the previous year.' GCSE results in the sixth form are disappointing, but A' level passes are better than national results. 'The quality of learning and teaching is good with many examples of very good practice. Attitudes are very positive and pupils are motivated to learn.' The school is an orderly community in which relationships are good.' However the report states

that 'attendance for the whole school is not satisfactory.' The school is congratulated for managing its finances skilfully and providing good value for money. But the large number of mobile classrooms are regarded as a significant drain on resources. Their use, particularly during poor weather, is identified as a Health and Safety problem. Other points of action include the need to improve the pastoral system so that all teachers give it an equal and high priority. The balance of the curriculum for all pupils also needs to be addressed. The report says there is some good practice in matching pupils' tasks to their ability, but this needs to be uniformly implemented across all subjects. Mrs Christine Gale, chairman of governors at Ridgeway, said: "We are delighted with the outcome of the report. It identified much we already knew and we feel strongly that the school can go forward with a great deal of confidence to the challenges which lie ahead."

MGM manager wants Movieola ideas If you missed a movie the first time around, or are frustrated because foreign language films are never shown on the big screen in Swindon, the MGM at Shaw Ridge is at last catering for minority tastes in anew Movieola programme. The cinema is now showing highly regarded 'arthouse' titles, acclaimed foreign movies, and recent sell-out films that quickly become classics beyond the marketing hype. Movieola will be a feature of Thursdays at the MGM. Each film will be given at least two screenings. Ann Billingham, Swindon Bike Group coordinator, frustrated by the delay caused by the circus in the background A new bicycle route between West Swindon and the town centre was due to be built round the edge of Wootton Bassett Road Park during May until the touring Russian circus set up camp at the beginning of the month. Wiltshire County Council were ready to send in contractors to construct the cycle path to join up with a link already built next to Robert Le Kyng School, Westcott Place, in time for National Bike Week in June. But Thamesdown Council had booked the circus, followed by a fair. The new path will be the last section of a safe route between Lydiard Park and West Swindon avoiding main roads through to the Brunel shopping centre.

Tree 'massacre' inToothill Park Irate residents who live next to Toothill Park were upset to see Thamesdown council workmen cutting down thirty foot tall trees close to their houses in late May. Gordon Hayward from Edgehill, Freshbrook said: "The council tell us the trees have served their purpose. But it's unneccessary to remove such large specimens. It's an absolute massacre." A council spokesman said the trees being removed are poplars planted for 'rapid growth' effect. Removing them will allow the

slower growing, but longer living, oak and ash planted in the same area to flourish. The council is preparing public information explaining its woodland management procedures.

Caught by fire Take precautions writes Sub. Officer Perry Payne from Westlea I'd like to start with a thank you to all those who kindly supported Westlea fire crews in raising £75 at our charity car wash in early May. We all certainly enjoyed the day and I'm pleased to say the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund and the children's ward at Princess Margaret Hospital will benefit from the proceeds. Since my first column in last months Link magazine we've responded to 60 incidents from Westlea Fire Station which have consisted of 23 false alarms, 15 emergency special service calls and 22 fires. Amongst the emergency special service calls we've assisted persons trapped in vehicles at road traffic accidents, shut in lifts, with fingers trapped in machinery and also one person who was trapped in a pedal cycle. Unfortunately, amongstthefires we've attended were several house fires where the occupants were trapped. I'm sure we can all imagine how terrifying an ordeal this must be and will share my concern in trying to prevent such fires occurring. The national media recently reported the tragic deaths of 5 people, including 4 children, in a house fire in Hampshire. It is against this background that I'd like to offer some fire safety advice. I hope everybody has at least one British Standard approved

smoke alarm on each floor. If not, please buy them. The value of the early warning cannot be overstated although the best form of protection against fire is prevention. If, in spite of precautions taken, a fire occurs it is essential for everyone to know what to do and how to get out safely. If you discover a fire which cannot be extinguished immediately and safely follow these procedures: 1) Get everybody out of the room where the fire is and close the door. 2) Ensure everyone gets out of the house. 3) Call the Fire Brigade by dialling 999.

4) Do not attempt to re-enter the house.

Westlea Police Station is now your local There is growing concern that a number of callers who want to report incidents to the police at Westlea are still going to the Central Police Station rather than to Westlea writes PC Peter Mathias The Westlea Station covers the police area north of the Bristol to Paddington railway line and this includes the whole of West Swindon and the Haydon Wick area. We are open Monday to Saturday, 8am - 7pm but closed to callers on Sundays when you will have to visit the town centre station. The custody area is now 24 hours operational and the traffic department handle all traffic matters here. The Intelligence Office will also be located at Westlea soon. The control room staff will transfer in the autumn. On the crimefront, burglary continues to be a problem in our area. The main targets are electrical goods, jewellery, money, credit

cards and cheque books. Please ensure that your electrical items are postcode marked and record all serial numbers. Theft from motor vehicles is also a major problem. Please remember to park your vehicle in a well lit area, do not leave valuables or mobile telephones in view and where possible remove the radio cassette player. Finally, if any property is offered to you for sale please leave a message at the station. You do not have to give your name and address. Remember, one day a call to the police may result in the recovery of your property.

Claire started to avoid sex as it just seemed like one more thing to do. Steve, on the other hand, found he wanted her more, as a way of reassuring himself that their love was still there. This caused a great deal of tension between them, resulting in tears and arguments. By the time they came into counselling their son was approaching his fourth birthday. The counsellor encouraged them to talk about their feelings. She also helped Claire to work out ways in which she could get more support from family and friends to ease the strain of looking after the children. Steve began to see that he had to back off sexually. They both realised that they needed to spend more time together as a couple, having fun, going out, and showing each other non-sexual affection. The counsellor helped them discuss the various ways in which this might be achieved. After six months of counselling

their lives were much improved and less stressful. Quite naturally, their sex life started to go well again. Steve joked that Claire was now too interested. Talks on diabetes Fighting fragile bones The Thamesdown Group of the National Osteoporosis Society will be taking part in a national awareness week between 26 and 30 June to draw attention to the problem of osteoporosis. Thinking of Swindon 20 years hence Freshbrook resident Sue Bates reflects on her new position as the first woman leader of Thamesdown Council Like many people living in Swindon, I moved from London because of my job and wasn't sure what to expect. Now, 15 years later, having just been elected Leader of the Council, I am giving thought about what kind of place we all want Swindon to be, not just next year, but in 10 and 20 years time. Of course, not all decisions are made by the Council alone. Consultation is important. Everyone who lives here should be able to contribute in some way and I believe that residents should use the Council and their local councillors as a means of making their views known. There are other ways, of course, but councillors are easier to contact and, most importantly, are regularly up for election, which makes them accountable. Living in West Swindon and being a councillor for Gorse Hill means I daily see the 'new' and the 'old.' The similarities are stronger than the differences, but there are differences such as the striking lack of open space in the central areas compared with West Swindon. On the other hand there is a wider choice of shops in Gorse Hill. Jam aware of the large number of primary age school children in West Swindon in portakabins, and that many pupils have to be bussed to secondary school. In practice, this means that money is being spent on transport which could be re-directed towards improving education. Having been a governor of Oliver Tomkins School for the past 14 years and as a parent of an 11 year old, I know that there are long-standing education problems in need of attention. Another related issue is youth provision. West Swindon has quite a wide range of community buildings, but the facilities need to be available for young people more regularly. At the moment some buildings are not being used fully and one priority will be to get people together to see how things can be improved. Thamesdown Council has never pretended that there will be a bottomless pit of money available when we become a Unitary Authority. But certainly there is some scope for

improving co-ordination to make the best of what we have got. This applies in West Swindon particularly because of the large numbers of young people living there, but is equally true in the rest of the Borough. With the northern sector well underway, we must learn from the past and plan for the future. These are just some of the issues we have to deal with over the next couple of years. My priority is to ensure that all residents have a chance to feed their views into the debate and I welcome suggestions as to how they think the system can be improved.

Finding common threads in the town Team Spirit was the message recently at Swindon Town Football Club for the launch of the next Common Purpose programme. It's an educational programme which involves decision makers in Swindon from private, public and voluntary sectors who come together for nine highly participative days during the year. They examine the issues affecting their community, the aim being to produce better informed leaders and encour age collaboration between sectors. Where else would you find a sculptor, vicar, M&S store manager, bank manager, police inspector spending time together focussing on what makes Swindon work? They are just five of the 35 participants of the current programme in the town. Issues such as employment, health, education, transport and the environment have all been brought under scrutiny. Common Purpose programmes have been successfully run in Swindon since 1991 and recruitment is taking place for the September start of this link-forming initiative. There are now over 100 graduates of Common Purpose in Swindon 3,000 nationwide. The closing date is 9 June.
