Police positive action to give youngsters summer fun

Six major fun events during the next three months are planned for this years annual West Swindon Under 5s Festival. The first takes place on Friday 17 June with the opening of a brand new play area at Tumpy Fields on Shaw Ridge with a picnic and balloon launch hosted by Brampton Bear. Named after the nearby housing area, Brampton Bear is described by his creators at Thamesdown Council's Community Forest team as a 'wonderful little bear who enjoys adventurous play and having fun.' Members of the Brampton Bear Club are being being invited to the picnic and membership is free to any children under 11 years. Parents of under 5s who would like to receive an invitation should drop a line to Julia Castle, Leisure Services, Thamesdown Borough Council, Civic Offices, Swindon by 10 June at the latest.

Teenagers are going to get the chance in June to burn off excess energy in a new initiative being organised by Swindon Police. Area team sergeant Terry Cuss is organising free transport from different parts of West Swindon to Lydiard Park for weekly softball games, starting on 9 June. Explaining the project, Sgt. Cuss said, "there were conflicts between residents and young people in Freshbrook last summer and a lot of people said 'somebody should do something.' So, we're doing something. "We've chosen softball because anybody of any age or ability can play. There's no age limit, but essentially were aiming this project at the 11 to 16 age group. Youngsters are welcome to make their own way there. Parents can also come along, so long as they join in."

Inspectors from the government's Office for Standards in EducationOfsted - have given Greendown, West Swindon's secondary school, top marks for the quality of education on offer. The main findings of the report say that Creendown is good school with high standards of achievement. The quality of teaching and learningis high and pupils are motivated. There is a strong and effective ethos in the school and pupils demonstrate high standards of behaviour. The school is commended for its effective management and development planning. The report states that standards of achievement in 85% of lessons observed are average or above in relation to national norms, with 19% being above average. The quality of pupil learning is unusually high, with 94% of lessons being satisfactory or better. Pupils are generally well motivated and make clear progress. Satisfactory is a positive term for Ofsted in that it meets their demanding standards. The quality of class teaching seen is also high, with 94% achieving Continued on page 2

Teachers are skilled, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and deliver classes which are nearly always purposeful and well paced. There is good spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils who have a clear sense of the positive values which permeate the school. There areclear school rules which are understood by pupils and these support the high standards of learning. The learning environment is orderly and purposeful and staff pupil relations are good. The few instances of bullying are dealt with quickly, using clear policy guidelines. The report says that Greendown has made considerable improvement, particularly in the last two years, through great efforts by its staff and effective leadership of its headteacher. The inspection during the week 18 to 22 April was conducted by 17 inspectors who visited 20% of the lessons, a higher proportion than usual. Formal interviews with staff and governors took place to assess the organisation of the curriculum, care of the children and management of the school. Thirty children of all ages and abilities were interviewed and their work intensively scrutinised. A senior Her Majesty's Inspector also monitored the inspection on behalf of Ofsted.

As with many other schools, Greendown is criticised for not conductinga daily act of collective worship. Specifically, the report comments on the difference in past GCSE exam performance between boys and girls. Girls results are well above national averages whilst boys are below. The report is pleased with Greendown's progress and plans for the future. Mayor Doreen says farewell This year Thamesdown Council's Mayor Making Day was moved from a Thursday to Friday, so Doreen Dart was given an extra day to fit in another hectic round of visits. And after nearly 700 engagements during her year and a day in office, the popularfirst citizen would be willing to start all over again. But unfortunately Doreen won't get the chance to continue her high profile presence around the Borough as Deputy Mayor, as she was ousted from her Blunsdon council seat in the May elections, a victim of the Government's unpopularity nationally, and the lack of a third party to split the vote in her ward. "1 had an idea what to expect as Mayor, but I didn't know about the varied range of activities I would visit or the deep commitment of people around the borough," said Doreen. "It was a pleasure to visit all the voluntary groups and businesses who invited me to their events. Everybody I've met has been so generous in thought, word and deed. "And they're so talented. Dancers, singers, bands, choirs, sportsmen and women. It was lovely to visit mothers with their tiny babies at PMI-I at Christmas, and also the five people who turned one hundred during the year. Town's first after school club reaches five years Speedway star John Jefferies and Swindon Town players Andrew Thomson and Chris Hamon joined parents and children to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Toothill's After School Club, the first of its kind in Swindon, at its annual general meeting on 4 May. Toothill After School Club chairperson Harry Dodd said the club had come a long way from a campaigning group of mums and dads with a vision to provide group care for children with working parents. "Our four paid staff care for a daily maximumof 30 children, five days a week. Despite a £5,000 cut in grant from Thamesdown Council, with a further cut expected next year, we have made careful use of our resources and have able to weather

the extra pressure this has brought. It has meant we have been able to concentrate on the day to day care for the children and organising special activities like a Christmas trip to the Superbowl and an outing soon to see Torvill and Dean at Binningham." He said two aspects have not changed at the club, a constant waitinglistand management committee made up of volunteer parents. Toothill After School Club meets at Toothill Farm Bodiam Drive and cares for children aged 5 to 12. The cost is £2 a session and £1.75 for siblings. Gold Card holders are entitled to a reduced rate. Country flavour brought to bee keeping bobby's beat New Westlea beat bobby PC Matt Bayliss looks like a village bobby of fond memories, straight out of the 1950s. But appearances can be deceptive and after 20 months duty in Swindon town centre he knows how to handle drunks turning out of pubs, and has had the training to use a shield effectively in a riot. His father was a policeman and Matt grew up in a country village police house in Warwickshire. But his entry to the police service has been that of a mature entrant at the age of 37, after 18 years working on railway computer systems. Matt is the first to acknowledge that he doesn't fit the TV image of the young, aggressive copper, but then he believes programme makers have a narrow, unreal view of police work. "I wanted to get away from computers into a more practical, socially relevant job," he said. "I suppose I bring some of my village background to my work. People have a right to be safe and secure in their communities. I'm pleased to make my contribution."

Westlea After School Club celebrated a successful and busy year at its third annual general meeting on 12 May with a talk from Joan Simons of the WiltshireTrainingand Enterprise Council. Spirits were high as the club has achieved a strongorganisationaland financial status. Club chair Julie Bailey said Thamesdown Council had demonstrated its support for after school children's care by increasing its annual grant. A two week holiday care scheme at Easter had been well used and there are plans to open forfour weeks during the summer. The club, which meets in the Sunshine Room at Westlea School, caters for 30 children each day and there are a further 30 waiting to join.

Elderly residents deprived of comfy outdoor seat Thieves stole an oak seat sited in the garden outside the common mom at George Tweed Gardens, Shaw Village Centre at the beginning of May. It was purchased and donated by the family of a deceased resident and had an inlaid brass plaque in the centre of the top rail.

School adopts Hercules 302 Children from Brook Field School were shown round a Hercules transport aircraft at RAF Lyneham on 27 April, as part of a project on flight. Brook Field pupil eleven year old Katie Colbert describes the visit. At 1.30pm we were ready and rearing to go to see our adopted plane at Lyneham. When we arrived we had a special guided tour around Lyneham until we reached our plane. We were then allowed up to the cockpit and fired questions at Mr Querzani wand he fired answers back. As it was our plane we were even allowed to sit in the pilot's, co-pilot's and engineer's seats and Mr Querzani even turned some things on so we could see them. When we had done that we went to the back of the aircraft and the back door was opened. We were allowed to go to the end of the door and then we shut it up. We were shown where the parachutes were before we got off the plane and saw another Hercules taking off. We were told that wherever this plane goes we will hopefully be sent a postcard. Unfortunately we only had an hour there before we had to come

Community Association calls readers to meetings Haydon Wick Community Association desperately need a good turnout for two important meetings coming up. The first is an Open Meeting on Monday 20 June at the Haydon Centre from 7.30pm to discuss the role and aims of the Community Association in the future. Writing for children Popular childrens author and illustrator Mary Rayner will be joining Haydon Wick Writers fortheir meeting on Thursday 16 June at the Haydon Centre from 7.30pm when the topic is writing for children. Versatile Mary is best know for youngerreaders' favourite Garth Pig but she writes for older children too. Her recent novel, 'The Echoing Green', was inspired by her Chiseldon base and she has illustrated many books for other writers such as Dick King-Smith. Green Goddess works out with Brownies and Guides Over200 guides and brownies were joined by TV's green goddess Diana Moran recently for the county finals of their sponsored Kim's Game at the Haydon Centre. "It was a tough memory test," said trainee district commissioner Sue Love, "but all the girls did very well and we raised a lot of money for the Children's Society." The game involved memorising items on a tray for two minutes, 20 items for rainbows, 60 for brownies and 100 for guides, and then recallingwhat they were. The girls proved so good that a cheque for £3,000 was received for the Society by Diana Moran. "Diana was really nice," said Sue, "She mucked in with the children and told us that the experience of hiking with guides and rangers when she was young had helped her on her recent walk through the channel tunnel." The eventbrought togetherguides and brownies from all over Wiltshire. "The girls often don't appreciate how big the guide movement is until we have something like this," said Sue. A campfire and sing-song rounded off the afternoon celebrating the end of a successful contest.

Feast of a festival Matt Holland reflects on some of the highlights of Swindon's Festival of Literature in May "Just what we needed!" was the verdict from one festival follower, a school teacher, on Swindon's recent first Festival of Literature, which ran from 6 to 14 May and staged most of its events at the Link Arts Studio. "Swindon coming of age" was the way another enthusiast assessed this new venture sponsored by the Swindon Chamber of Commerce. To entertain and inform in a way new to Swindon was, in fact, one of the Festivals main aims. And when certain authors and performers were first approached, their initial reaction was to say, "I've never actually been to Swindon before." So they got a new experience too. One new particularly 'hot potato' for the week was Clive Ponting's reassessment of Winston Churchill. He raised some tricky questions and invited the Swindon audience to have their say, which they did, in a mature and rational way. Not so much tricky as magical was the evening at the Link Studio with veteran songster and storyteller Robin Williamson. From the moment he came on stage and plucked the first string on his beautiful Celtic harp, the audience, ranging in age from five to eighty five, was spellbound. He told tales of old mixed with jokes for today; sang songs of love and baleful ballads; and strung the whole evening together in a web of melodic and instrumental delight. We clapped for more and got an encore. Another occasion that had the

What are Saturday Mornings made for? The MOM Cinema Local children's author Mary Rayner with Henty and Florence Barrett audience clapping for more was the Children, Parents and Books day, once again in that flexible venue the Link Studio. Author/illustrator Korky Paul kicked the day off with wild portraits of children, those who dared draw the first line; and rhymester John Foster rounded it off appropriately for FA Cup Final day with a burst of soccer sonnets. The Festival's finalflourish was to launch a Federation of Children's Books Group for Swindon, a group that will provide much needed information and support for parents who are keen to find the right reading material for their children. A total of over 700 people attended the Festival's twelve main events and a further 1,000 plus primary school children enjoyed visits from poets and storytellers. This augers well for the future of literary events in Swindon.

Karate in Haydon Swindon Wado-Ryu Karate club have just started a series of new classes at the Haydon Centre. Classes on Thursdays from 8pm10pm are designed for over 16 of all grades. In North Swindon, half the 40 reported crimes were thefts from vehicles, so all the recent advice regarding security is very relevant. Many homes have burglar alarms fitted, but there can be problems if they activate accidentally when you are out or on holiday. This can cause extreme annoyance to neighbours and if we are unable to contact the owners or anyone with access to the house, it may be necessary to damage the wall box, or even ask the Environmental Health Officer to break in to switch the alarm off. Please ensure that a neighbour or friend knows how to deactivate your alarm and that person's name is lodged with the police station.

"If ever there was somebody who was 'gobsmacked,' it was Nathan." Nathan has been totally obsessed by Ferraris since he could say 'car' and his dream was to ride in one. His mum had put the word around her friends and work contacts and within two weeks was put in touch with Ferrari owner Chris Munday from an Old Town based company

who was only to happy to help out. Nathan's half hour outing, after a close inspection of the car, included a very quick blast down the M4 and back again. "It was fantastic," said Nathan. "It was so powerful that you're pushed right back into the seat and it was really noisy because the engine is just behind you. "I like them because they go fast and they look so good. People stare at you as you go by." Nathan's first ride in a Ferrari has now wetted his passion even more and his sights are set on a drive in the top of the range Testerossa. Designing cars after leaving school is his goal, for Ferrari who else?

Celebrating 150 years of faith From Nujaz Rahmani (age 12) from Grange Park and the Junior Youth of Thamesd own Baha'i Community On Monday 23 May it was the 150th anniversary of the Baha'i faith. In these 150 years the Baha'i faith, founded by Baha'u'llah (Glory of God) in Iran, has become the second most widespread religion after Christianity, with members in more than 200 countries. It is also the world's eighth largest organised religion. Baha'is believe thatthewholeworld should be thought of as one country and men and women and people of different colours and creeds should be treated the same. We believe in peace and unity of all peoples. There have been Baha'is in this country since the beginning of this century. The Baha'is celebrated this event around the world on Monday and I took a day off school. I spent the day with my family and other Baha'is in Thamesdown. I feel quite special thatl'mata young age when this event took place and I can't wait until the 200th anniversary of the faith when I will be 62 years old and I can tell my grandchildren about Monday23 May 1994, the 150th anniversary.
