However Crest representative Sarah Foster said, “it is Crest’s intention to retain land for a pub/

At the recent consultation meetings conducted by Crest Nicholson, where they outlined the plans for 1,700 homes on the site, a number of residents enquired about the plans to restore the current Chapel Farm landﬁll facility adjacent to the development area, and about proposals to install a waste to energy plant to provide combined heat and power to the new community. Karen Laurence of Oakhurst expressed concerns about the odours currently emanating from Chapel Farm during periods of hot weather, and wondered whether potential residents at Tadpole Farm would be similarly affected.

Richard Fisher, Swindon Council’s Waste Management manager conﬁrmed that the current landﬁll site will be restored to agricultural land in 2016, at which point the problem of smell will be eliminated. “However if residents are concerned about odours now they should contact environmental health,” he said. According to a draft submission of the Wiltshire and Swindon Waste Site Allocations Development Plan

dated June 2011, Chapel Farm is earmarked for development of a waste-to-energy facility, with requirements for dust, bioaerosol and odour mitigation. The proposal remains despite Crest Nicholson’s opposition in

March 2010 when they stated that they would represent ‘bad neighbour’ issues for potential Tadpole Farm residents. However borough council planning ofﬁcer Ian Halsall said, “the council is promoting community wide approaches to renewable energy with preference to district heating systems, as set out in our draft Core Strategy. “We are keen to investigate the opportunities of utilising Chapel Farm as a resource to generate energy and Crest are happy to work with us on this.” • Chapel Farm will be discussed at the North Swindon Cluster meeting on 7 July. Cafes boost volunteer confidence and bring communities together

West Swindon Community Café volunteers were recognised for their efforts during national volunteer week in early June, with certificates presented by the Mayor Ray Ballman. The two cafes, based in Toothill Church and Freshbrook Community Centre, coordinated by Tina Mackie and Carol Gibbon, rely on the help of the 14 volunteers. Tina said, “there is no doubt we could not function without our volunteers - they make the cafe a vibrant place and their enthusiasm to ensure the community is better for everyone is inspirational.” She added that some helpers have been involved since they first started at Freshbrook six years ago. “Our mission to help volunteers achieve their potential means we do have a steady turnover as we encourage them to reach their goals. Everyone is trusted and shares the responsibility; some have health problems or disabilities. Working on behalf of the Institute of War and Peace Reporting, a charitable organisation that trains local journalists to gather genuine news stories and broadcast them uncensored, Brian said the trip to the Nigerian capital Lagos was ‘a bit of a nightmare.’ “It’s a good job I took some temporary kit with me because the hardware was two weeks late and broken on arrival,” he said. “We

got it working just before the first round of the election, only to find out that voting had to be delayed by a week.” “The system is still functional, and local journalists continue to submit stories each day.” Brian described an incident where a female presidential candidate ran up huge bills at a five star hotel in Lagos, before disappearing without paying. She then turned up at a TV station to broadcast her speech, only to be arrested immediately afterwards. “Yet the Nigerian newspapers didn’t

report it at all,” said Brian. Sadly the elections were accompanied by violence which was not reported on national news, but was broadcast over IVR by IWPR trained journalists. Reflecting on the importance of independent news sources, Brian said, “the protests across the Arab world have highlighted the importance of sustainable means of communication such as community radio, which is less vulnerable to shut down by the state than the internet and mobile phone networks.”

“It’s so important to know what is really happening, and it’s our job to provide the means for people to know the truth. “The next application for the IVR system is likely to be for delivering health information, and to provide a safe way of reporting incidents of gender-based violence,” said Brian. “But I am supposed to be retired.” Retired or not, Brian is available to give talks to groups about his experiences in Africa, including the time he was airlifted from a Liberian radio station that was under ﬁre. Veterans’ trauma conference takes place on 5 August

Swindon Trauma Group, established in 2009 to provide support to military veterans and sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder and Gulf War syndrome is holding its annual conference, followed by an evening cabaret, on 5 August, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the opening of Princess Alexandra RAF Hospital in Wroughton. Group chairman and Gulf War veteran Richard Hilling said, “our conferences have been very well attended in the past by forces’ veterans from the UK and overseas. “Our keynote speaker will be Frank Parkinson, who is a PTSD expert and author of numerous books on the subject. There is now an imbalance between objective external assessment and internal assessment in school, and a real risk of parents not getting the full picture.” David’s views are supported by Professor Peter Tymms, Durham University’s Head of Education who claims that teachers’ inherent bias means that their assessments could not be used as an objective measure of pupil attainment. He added, “this lack of independent and objective testing has clearly induced some parents to believe that their child is doing OK when they are not. As a result, many students who would have presented at the end of Year 2 in the past are now not arriving until much later when they are even further behind. “Also students who may have been brought to us at the end of Year 9 are now arriving late in Year 10 or even mid-Year 11 when their GCSE exams have either been part-

taken and failed, or are virtually upon them.” In 2010 only 49.9% of Swindon students attained the government’s minimum target of 5 A* to C GCSE including English and Maths. Top coach to work with up and coming stars at West Swindon’s secondary school Greendown School plans name change to Lydiard Park Academy Mark Bennett, the coach to the coaches of some of Britain’s top teams, is partnering the new Lydiard Park Sports Academy (LPSA) to develop the most advanced training programmes to be found in any school in the UK. The former Army senior physical training instructor established his company Performance Development Systems (PDS) in 2003 to develop new methods which maximise performance in different sports by empowering individuals and teams to take responsibility for their training. As such he works mainly with sports managers to change the way they coach so that the athlete takes ownership for his or her performance.

As a result of work he did with England rugby coaches last Autumn which turned a loss against New Zealand into a record breaking win over Australia, Mark is currently working several days a week with the coaching team behind England’s bid for this year’s rugby world cup. He also coaches at the National Golf Academy and is mentor for trainers at Village Hotel gyms across the country. Greendown Community School plans to use its likely academy status to re-launch itself as Lydiard Park Academy from September 2012 when it will become independent of Swindon Borough Council. Mark was put in touch by The Link with Greendown director of sports Christian Dobbs after the exclusive feature on PDS in the May Link. Christian said, “I jumped at the opportunity to talk with Mark; the introduction came exactly at the right time as we are currently taking the school’s specialist sports status to the next level to tie in with academy status. Working with PDS offers us a hugely exciting opportu-

emy pupils to focus on nutrition, conditioning, training and rest; • workshops for parents to help support their child with advice on nutrition and time-management. Christian added that some twothirds of pupils at Greendown are engaged in higher level sport and training, from age group related elite swimmers and ice-hockey players, to young people joining recreational cycling groups or training in gyms. Mark said he thought the partnership could be the tip of an iceberg. “PDS is all about education, not the kind that teaches people information to simply to pass a test then forget, but the kind of education that enriches people’s lives, increases self esteem, motivation and develops a positive attitude towards health, fitness and performance. “I’ve worked with a number of schools, but this will be the first formal, long term development project. “I’m particularly keen to work with the academy coaches and also parents to help them work out good work-life arrangements for the young people. Some are already

training five days a week, some twice a day, in addition to school work. It’s important that they have good nutrition, time-management and life-skills programmes in place to complement their training regimes so they can achieve their potential. “It’s also important to recognise sport and academic studies go hand in hand and we’ve discussed working with teachers across the academy to apply the PDS method to engage all young people in taking responsibility for their lives. “As we introduce academy sports staff to PDS, I would expect to see tangible results after a single term.” Headteacher Clive Zimmerman said, “there are many very exciting changes going on at Greendown. Lydiard Park Sports Academy will be one of two initiatives for the school’s change in status, with the other being a second special academy programme for high achieving pupils. “Enhancing sporting and academic achievement is going to have positive impacts on every pupil who comes to the academy.”

Four talented chess players from Brook Field Primary School made some excellent moves on 21 May against the best players in Wiltshire and Dorset. After a long day involving six difficult games, Kevin Zhang, Isaac Williams, Anisha Kiran and Aliriza Gorgun, pictured, all made it through to the South of England Gigaﬁnal of the UK Land Chess Challenge to be held in July in Reading. Anisha also won the Suprema Trophy for being the best girl in her age group.

Having read the appeal from Westlea Primary School governors in the June Link asking parents to park at West Swindon Centre and walk 500 yards to the school to deliver or collect children, Kevin, left, wanted to add his view that parents are causing a major danger. “We’ve lived here for 19 years and the issue has got worse and worse, except when parents heed letters from the school to park at West Swindon Centre, when things improve for a couple of weeks. “It’s so bad for the two half hour periods in the day that it would be impossible for a fire engine to get down Langstone Way to the school or to one of the houses off the side streets opposite. “People almost get into fights to ensure they can get the spot closest the school. I sometimes get an apology if somebody parks across the drive, but usually I get a mouthful which is uncalled for.” Westlea governors have advised parents that if there is no improvement in the situation, they will have to start discussing the provision of double yellow lines with Swindon Council. “I’ll support such a move; it’s long overdue,” said Kevin.

Tanya Parkinson, manager at the Sure Start Butterflies Children’s Centre in North Swindon and her team are delighted with their new purpose built premises adjoining Abbey Meads Community Primary School, after six months located in a mobile at Catherine Wayte Primary School which is now used as a satellite centre and continues to offer a range of activities. “The new centre is purpose built, offering a flexible use of space, from midwife and Health Visitor clinics to Story Active and Stay and Play groups; we’re a lot busier and we can offer a greater range of groups

responding to the needs of the local community,” said Tanya. As well as the Catherine Wayte site, Butterflies holds groups and classes at Oakhurst school. Tanya added, “more space means there is scope for more groups to be volunteer led, such as the Mandarin Mums on Friday mornings. “The brand new Swindon Twins or More group began in June and we will shortly be starting a Young Mums group.” “Our dads and toddlers lunch group is a great way for fathers to meet each other and over the summer break we’ll be running groups

A recent local authority early year’s assessment rated the preschool as outstanding, and particularly commented on the enabling enviroment which encourages children to gain new skills, and there is good leadership and management. The campaign aims to encourage a diverse range of people to come forward to meet the needs of children and young people in care. Fostering is about helping children and young people get through a family emergency or a crisis. Foster carers come from all kinds of backgrounds. The only common denominator is that they are people who are interested and committed to helping children and young people by offering to share their homes and their lives for the period of time. Cheryl Keller, assistant team manager with the borough’s Family Placement Team said, “every young person and child is unique - so we need a wide range of carers to help us to meet their individual needs as fully as possible. “As you would expect, an extensive interview and assessment is conducted. References are undertaken and there are police checks. Only certain serious criminal convictions will automatically dis-

qualify you from becoming a carer. You will also be expected to attend a pre-service training and attend ongoing training once approved. Foster carer Sandra described the experience of fostering as one of the most rewarding experiences of her life. “To see a child come into your home scared, anxious, severely neglected and abused is dreadful. However, to see them leave you, a happy go lucky, conﬁdent, well cared for child, with a bright future, is totally fantastic. Every child is different so there is always something new to learn, and after ﬁve years of fostering I am still learning and enjoying my role. I would encourage anyone to step forward and give a child a home.” Foster carers are provided with ongoing training and an allowance. Staff and the public using the West Swindon supermarket selected Goldenhar after a public vote in early 2010. Alan Holmes, grandfather of Morgan Sharpe, 4, said, “the syndrome is a rare congenital abnormality. Morgan was born with one eye, one ear, part of his jaw missing, butterﬂy vertebrae, and he breathes through a tracheotomy. ”He’s had many operations and now has a prosthetic eye, which needs to be replaced as he grows. He recently had major jaw surgery to stretch his jaw. There will be more

eye and jaw surgery and, at some point, ear reconstruction. “Despite all this he copes extremely well and has a real sense of cheeky fun.” Alan expressed appreciation for the help people give to the support group. “To be voted Sainsbury’s Bridgemead Charity of the year was great. Take a day out on the Weymouth Wizard

A new Sunday direct rail service from Wiltshire to the Dorset coast is to be trialled through the summer, starting on 3 July. Swindon’s Mechanics’ could join the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu and Battersea Power Station on a World Heritage watch list. You can vote for the building to be the UK’s most endangered building in The Victorian Society’s poll The Mechanics’ Institute Trust has been approached by New Yorkbased World Monuments Fund to apply for recognition in their Watch List for 2012. Trust chairman Daniel Rose said “we submitted our application to be considered for the Watch short list earlier this year, after I had a call out of the blue asking for information about the contribution of Swindon Mechanics’ Institution to the town, and how the trust has been working to save it.” The WMF is an advocate for historic sites and buildings around the planet, having supported over 600 sites in over 80 countries since it first published the Watch List in 1996. According to the organisation’s website, over the last 15 years it has provided over $60 million of direct emergency funding, as well as facilitating a further $150m from other sources. Should the Swindon Mechanics’ Institute be selected for the Watch List in October this year, it will join the ranks of other internationally renowned and iconic sites to have been helped by the WMF, including

the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, Machu Picchu in Peru, Alexander Palace in St Petersburg, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Ephesus in Turkey and London’s Battersea Power Station. “Even if the Mechanics’ is not selected it will shine a light on Swindon and provide recognition that we have a building of international significance,” said Daniel. “The Institute here in Swindon was one of the biggest, longest running and most active in the com-

munity of all Mechanics’ Institutions. It is also the only one linked to the very British invention of the railway, which opened up whole continents. “The site’s Grade II* listing puts it into the top 6 per cent of endangered buildings. Representatives from heritage organisations all around the world agree what an historically important asset we have here, and how it ought to be restored and reused for community benefit.” The trust is also hoping that the Mechanics’ Institute will feature on The Victorian Society’s most

endangered list this year, raising the profile of the building’s plight at a national level. But it’s relying on Swindon residents to speak up for the building on the society’s website. “If we know how highly a community values a building, then this tells us more about its importance and how it merits inclusion on the list,” said Katie Gunning, Victorian Society campaign officer. Swindon Wide ‘Renault building’ gets a playful new use

One of Swindon’s most iconic buildings reopens as the 20,000 square foot Kidz About indoor play centre in July. Designed for Renault as a vehicle parts distribution centre by Sir Norman Foster and completed in 1983 on Mead Way, Westlea, although now called Spectrum, most people still refer to it as the Renault building. With shells of cars hanging from the roof of the large glass atrium at the southern end of the structure, the floor was a showroom for Renault products. The building won the Financial Times architecture award in 1984 and featured in the 1985 Bond movie A View to a Kill, starring Roger Moore. Renault moved its parts distribution operation out the town in 2001. Since then the building has had a number of temporary uses, such as

a Swindon College art gallery and most notably as a showroom and service centre for Ford. The striking pillars holding the building up continue to be painted in ‘Renault yellow’ and from Saturday 2 July, the atrium will be filled with a huge multi-coloured play frame rising to over 6.5 metres, an astraslide, a drop-slide and a spiral slide, an indoor football pitch, a toddler play space, as well as a separate baby area, specifically built for children who are not yet mobile. At 80 years old, Pam Boseley of Haydon Wick will become the oldest person ever to abseil the 83 ft drop off the Don Rogers Stand at Swindon County Ground when she makes the leap in October in aid of Prospect Hospice. Eco-schools inspector John Burdett said he had been greatly impressed on his visit in early June to assess whether the school had continued its commitment which has won it two green flags in the last four years. “The children who showed me around displayed a tremendous knowledge, enthusiasm and understanding for environmental issues and how they are affected by the world around them. “The environment is embedded into the curriculum; all the children I talked to wanted to tell me about their projects like composting or growing vegetables, and were keen to say how they get their families involved. Mrs Brough and Mrs Jackson keep them fired up and really committed.” To achieve a green flag Peatmoor had to demonstrate involvement in: • waste management - composting everything possible; • biodiversity - revamping the school pond in the last two years;

Bird sanctuary reveals secrets on 21 July

There is a rare chance to discover one of Swindon’s secret wildlife spots in July when Wiltshire Wildlife Trust opens West Swindon’s bird sanctuary within the Thames Water compound, next to Shaw Forest. Two conducted tours of Swindon Lagoons will take place on Thursday 21 July at 5.30pm and 7pm and places have to be booked in advance. For many years there was no public access to the site and the ponds next to the River Ray Parkway became an untouched wildlife site within a mile of Swindon town centre. Over the last year with a £70,000 grant from Thames Water, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust volunteers have improved footpaths and built screens

Trust reserves officer Neil Pullen, said the area has fascinating surprises for visitors. “Because the site has been relatively untouched it has become a haven for birds and wildlife. Our aim is not to overly disturb this character so visits have to be limited to guided tours and occasional open days. At different times of the year you’ll see a range of wading birds, kingfishers, banded demoiselle damselflies and Daubenton’s bats. “Swindon Lagoons is a jewel set in the midst of the town. Even with all the physical development it shows how a healthy ecosystem attractive to both wildlife and people can be created - it’s something to celebrate.”

Irish dancers gather at Greendown

The West Swindon based Shamrock Irish Dance Academy is holding its ﬁrst ever Feis on 9 July when some 300 dancers from all over southern England will converge on Swindon to compete in age groups ranging from six to 18 years of age. The event runs from 8am to 8pm and is open to the public. Tickets at £3 are available on the door. T h e A c a d e m y, which opened in July 2010 meets at Freshbrook Community Centre on Monday and Thursday evening. Academy dancers are available to dance at displays and events. Youngsters from 5 to 15 years old looking for fun in good company can join Toothill Farm Junior Youth Club which meets on Tuesdays, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, for 10s to 15s and Fridays, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, for 5s to 10 year olds The club organises structured activities and has a range of equipment like a pool table and computer games. This summer a 5-a-side football tournament and a commando course is being organised. Scouts worried about their future Although Toothill Scouts have leased the old cow barn at Toothill Farm social centre for about ten years, renewing its lease with Swindon Borough Council is proving a headache. Although a new lease has been issued, the Scouts are not able to sign it until the council agrees to put right outstanding maintenance items that have been under discussion for years - outside rendering to stop damp in the walls, electrical and drainage checks and provision of heaters. However council director of housing Bernie Brennan said maintenance work is scheduled to take place by the end of July in advance of the lease being signed by the Scout group.

Media make-up student aims for national prize

After winnning the Gold Medal at the national WorldSkills Final last year, Swindon College is on track to do it again with student Elise Street who took first prize at the South West Media Make-Up WorldSkills UK Heat on 25 May.

Elise, from Woodhall Park, who is on the BTEC National Diploma in Production Arts (Media MakeUp) course is competing against the top ten in Britain at the national finals on 25 June. For the heat Elise had to produce a piece of art from memory on a model’s entire body using the theme of ‘Magical Wildlife.’ Students were marked on set up, personal appearance, application techniques, dramatic impact, overall effect and the finished results and the judges praised Elise’s impressive skills for a student of her age.
