Her biggest fear is that she will discover that her mum has died. Hours of searching on the internet have been emotionally draining but Candy has found no leads. She hopes that someone reading this article has information about Margaret Mary Shepherd who will be aged around 53 now. "I've got my life but I feel this is the time," said Candy. Isambard youngsters get a realistic picture of conflict

Former soldier Billy Baxter, spoke to youngsters at Isambard Community School during a fortnight of school visits across the town in the run up to national Veteran's Day, at the invitation of councillor Steve Wakefield, Mayor of Swindon. Billy told them about his experiences serving for 21 years with the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery until losing his sight on active duty in Bosnia in 1997. While undertaking the gruesome task of collecting evidence of atrocities from mass graves, Billy wiped away tears and unwittingly rubbed bacteria into his eyes which eventually destroyed his optic nerve. The blind servicemen's charity, St Dunstan's, helped Billy put his life backtogether again and he now tours the country as part of their education programme. "My army training has stood me in good stead to deal with my disability." said Billy. "Along with help from my friends and St Dunstan's, l adapted

army skills that I had acquired." Not only did he learn to cope with everyday life, but Billy decided to get back on his motorbike and take to the track. In 2003 he set the world blind land speed record of 165mph. He also continues to ski and to ride horses and says his technique has improved since he lost his sight. At Isambard, Billy spoke about life as a soldier and what it means to be a veteran. "I tell the students what it's really like in war. What goes on in a soldier's mind: that we are human beings, we don't like killing people, we don't like going abroad and seeing nasty things. We go to help people. The students are quite amazed to learn that it's not all about weapons and tanks." James Weller, 12, was impressed by Billy's talk. "I thought that a veteran was someone old who was in the war. £8 million flood rescue plan for Haydon The risk of regular flooding to homes in Haydon Wick could be alleviated by Spring 2010 after Thames Water completes an £8 million sewer and storm water drainage improvement programme. Work on the three phase project will start in July and major construction to build larger capacity sewers in High Street and Blunsdon Road will start in December and take 15 months to complete.

We found a club in a state of some disarray and in need of urgent attention. The immediate task was to get the club off life support, into intensive care and then begin the process of steady rehabilitation. Five months of hard work sorting out the financial matters and introducing proper processes, has seen the patient now in a stable position and ready to take the next steps. These are centred on the introdu ction of a 5S strategy throughout the club which is built around: Sort out, Set Up, Shine, Standardise, and Sustain. I am confident that adoption of this approach will have positive impacts across the entire club which will be evident to everyone. The actual season ended on 3 May and at that time the start of the new 2008/09 season seemed a very long way off. But time has flown by and it is now but a few weeks before we host Portsmouth FC at the County Ground for the first of our preseason friendlies (18 July). Whilst the players may have been on holiday, the rest of the staff at the club have been busily working on a whole range of initiatives. To give readers a taste of what goes on in the incredibly short closed season period (May to August) these are some of the key topics that are being addressed:

• The stadium is undergoing a complete face lift and smarten up; • A new fitness and conditioning coach has been recruited; • The hospitality areas are being refurbished; • The 2008/09 budgets was prepared in great detail and presented to the Board on 16 June; • Designing and ordering new playing kit; • Completing negotiations with new sponsors and announcing our partnership with Britain's biggest selling monthly football magazine, FourFourTwo; • Refitting and smartening up the club shop; • New players for next season are being identified and assessed; • Development and introduction of community related projects. The management of these and many more issues has kept everybody highly motivated and there is great excitement and anticipation to see the County Ground and the club restored to its former glory, once more standing proud in the Swindon community. Uplands Special School on the Learning Campus was filled with the sights, sounds and smells of India for a foreign languages day in late May. "Being a special school we focus much more on the culture than the language," said Phil Joiner, foreign languages co-ordinator. "We try to make it as visual and as stimulating as possible and we're concentrating on the senses." r*^" The smell of Indian food fi lled the ,, air, as a buffet provided by Planet Bollywood was set out. Sedum seeded on school roof Work on completing Toothill Primary School in time for a late July handover is proceeding apace and specialists were on site in mid-June laying down the sedum roof. The February Link reported how the school will be a green pioneer in the town, with the first large sedum roof installation in Swindon. Apart from major environmental benefits from excellent insulation, temperature control, and soaking up rainfall, and reducing the off site flow during major storms, the roof will be a hive of activity. Children and adults will be able to see insect life up close colonising the roof. Headteacher Martin Cowell, below, said the whole school is getting ready for the big move. "We just can't wait to get inside the new building and we're really looking forward to observing our very own 'living roof' in action." Ms Rodbourn began her career in Ealing in 1970 before moving to schools in Colchester, Exeter, Gloucester and Chew Valley. When she arrived at Bridlewood, construction had been delayed for several months while Swindon Council deliberated over whether it should be built ahead of other planned schools in North Swindon. Bridlewood opened in mobiles in September 2003 with 53 Reception and Year 1 pupils and finally moved into a permanent building in April 2004. Ms Rodbourn has not quite seen the first intake through the school but hopes to be invited back to see the first reception children leave

Matt Holland considers the impact of May's Swindon Festival of Literature This year's festival was groundbreaking in more ways than one. Its programme cover, instead of being literary or arty, pictured an ordinary town with terraced streets, chimneys, cars, lamposts and Swindon's tallest building rising above it. Instead of being full of celebrity authors. it was full of ideas, themes and topics pertinent to life today. Also, instead of importing all its performers from far flung places, it had numerous events parading local talent. Furthermore, instead of scurrying round town from one venue to another, the festival stayed at the Arts Centre for most of its events and soon a continuous festival feelgood factor built up. The result of all this was a festival that not only included internationally-known names and prize-winning authors that was grounded in Swindon, bursting with ideas, and celebrating the work of local writers and artists.The 50-plus events were better-attended than ever before, with well over 5.000 people from near and far choosing to enjoy this annual communion of words. Highlights were many but maybe some events merita mention, if only to show the festival's variety, range, and reach.

On the second day, African author Marion Molteno made numerous points about literature. You do your writing alone, almost secretly, and then offer it to the world of readers, who sit in judgement on you. Writing is a great vehicle to help you get into someone else's life, to understand them better. Culture means sharing the same jokes: On Saturday morning, young poets from nine Swindon schools strutted their stuff on stage. Four 1 3 year-olds from Commonweal School, with a poem on the futility of political choices, won the day and walked off with a big silver cup. In the second week, on a Thursday evening, members of Swindon's many reading groups were out in force for Marina Lewycka. She spoke of sex in her books. `In life, whatever situation we find ourselves in, we get on with it, and look for someone to get off with.' After sex, who'd have thought that maths could be a hit, but it was. Un-professorial Professor Marcus du Sautoy delighted his evening audience and got them well and truly involved with his mathematical problems. The Festival Finale at the Town Hall was performed by Theatre of Motion, young, local, talented and

A summer for reading Swindon Libraries launched its annual summer reading challenge with a week of storytelling in the Old Town Bowl by former Westlea headteacher Neil Griffiths of Corner to Learn. Schools from across the town helped Neil, inset below, enact his famous book The Journey with music, props and action. The challenge runs from 19 July to 13 September. It has an Olympic fl avour with young readers able to achieve gold, silver or bronze medals for their reading achievements. Call into any Swindon library for details; it's free to take part.

Swindon Wide A good read comes to Swindon In August 2007, The Link was the first media to report the coming of Commonhead, an exciting new reading and writing venture for Swindon, writes Alexandra Martin. Two local writers. Hilda Sheehan and myself, together with Swindon Council Literature Development worker Matt Holland, announced that we planned to publish a new book of writing and illustration that would be 'a good read from Swindon.' In subsequent weeks we were inundated with contributions of poetry. prose, cartoons, puzzles, opinions, philosophy and photographs. Swindon Arts Centre 11 to 13 July Avenging hit men, traumatised teens, post apocalyptic mayhem and stunning martial arts are just some of the elements of a film festival that offers something quite different for Swindon. Festival programmer Justin Richards said, "PhantasmaGoria has something for all film fans, especially those with a passion for horror, fantasy and sci-fi movies. "We'll be kicking off with'Infestati on' which has all these elements. It's a sci-fi horror crossover, which demonstrates how low budget films can rise above all expectations. It proves that British cinema doesn't have to be all about corsets or 'Notting Hill' style rom-coms.

The festival marks out Swindon as phantastic, said Justin. "The UK doesn't really have an action orientated movie festival: sci-fi and horror is overlooked and unfairly dismissed by critics. We're giving upcoming filmmakers their chance to screen their movies on the big screen before a live audience rather than via DVD or YouTube The fesitval will screen 12 features and 12 shorts and many of the filmmakers will introduce their fil ms and answer questions afterwards.There will also be film workshops and merchandise stalls. last year and wanted to see more of the world.They decided to plan their own expeditions rather than sign

up with a company that organises voluntary work overseas. Lucy, from Wootton Bassett, studied nursing and has been helping to set up a mobile medical centre to take services to people returning

to their farms and villages. Jennifer, whose degree was in

Running club moves to the west The Slinn A11Stars running club with over 20 members attending weekly training sessions has moved its Tuesday evenings run to Basepoint on Rivermead Drive, Westlea. Over the last five years bends, shallows, riffles to encourage breeding fish, insect ponds, water meadows and a beach have been reintroduced into a 1.2 km section of the river from Great Western Way north towards the Thames Water treatment works. The project managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust (WWT) has involved contractors undertaking the heavy work and volunteers clearing scrub, cutting back trees and collecting and sowing wild fl ower seeds. Three volunteers will look after the site by carrying out maintenance work, cutting back overgrown vegetation, removing litter and talking to people visiting the site. Ted Hewer, 60, from Rodbourne discovered the project through Tire Link. "There was a story about the Costa del Ray in the second phase. The idea sounded great and I got involved so that I could bring my grandchildren to visit" Paul Shipway has been involved for five years. "Unfortunately

the heavy rains recently and the surge in the water has damaged the shingle beach which will have to be repaired. But it's fantastic to see the water flowing through the site. The noise as it flows over the riffles is lovely." "Our role is to be the eyes and ears for the area. The bird and fish life are making use of it and we'd encourage the community to discover it as soon as possible." Neil Pullen, WWT manager in Swindon, paid tribute to the project management by Jo Sawyer who has moved to a job with Thames Water. "The River Ray project shows how an urban waterway can be brought back to life and can benefit humans and wildlife, whilst still being an important means of drainage."

Air cadet marches on to replace minibus y fourteen year old In preparation for the Nijmegen Marches in Jul. Alex Cole from Freshbrook collected a medal for covering 50 miles in two days at a qualifying event at RAF Cosford in late May. Alex, a member of ATC 1244 Squadron, is now making final preparations for the famous treks around the town of Nijmegen in Holland from 15 to 18 July, marching a marathon each day. The cadets and unit commanders taking part are railing money for a new squadron mini-bus. Those who went to Cosford had to travel back to Swindon in anAAvehicle after theirbus packed up. Plan for Swindon to go into transition mode Following a recent highly successful presentation to 60 inter-

ested people at the Civic Offices, Swindon Climate Action Network (SCAN) is exploring what it means to become a 'Transition Town.' Andy Parsons, co-chair of SCAN, said, "at present, the world faces two major threats to stability and prosperity: climate change and 'peak oil'. Mankind's over-use of energy is leading to gases that are changing the climate just as the supply of oil is unable to keep pace with demand. This is resulting in the rapid price increases we are all seeing." The idea behind Transition Towns is that a more locally-based economy is developed with less inward transportation and more food grown and sold locally. Some groups are already attempting to address some of the issues, through local farmers' markets and the LETS local trading group. Energy demand is starting to be met by local production at the Westmill Windfarm. The new library and National Trust's Heelis building show how new developments can improve Swindon's sustainability without costing jobs. However more needs to be done and SCAN wants to hear from anyone interested in developing ideas. A meeting will be held on Wednesday 16 July, 7.30pm, at Friends Meeting House, Eastcott Hill to discuss ways for Swindon to become a Transition Town. Youth gutted to see their building gutted An accidental electrical fault has destroyed Sparcells Youth Club, days before the users were ready to declare it fully refurbished and fit for purpose. Luckily nobody was inside and the fire in late May happened at the beginning of the summer so youth workers can continue contact with young people in the adjacent open space and by organising trips. Hannah Fishlock, 15, said, "we'd just finished decorating a chill out room and had two leather sofas, bean bags and a TV. We're all really upset that the hard work went up in smoke." Youth worker Clare Winslow said, "we're waiting to find out from Swindon Council if the insurance will cover the repair or replacement of the building. In the meantime we're working hard to organise alternative activities; this will make the club stronger." • The youth centre on Sparcells Drive is a mobile building first installed
