Abby's dinosaur could be on the way to Isle of Wight A five foot high model of a dinosaur was due to go under the hammer, with items donated by local and national celebrities, politicians and football clubs, on 27 June at a fund raising event in aid of the cancer appeal set up in the memo ry of Abby Smith from Middleleaze who died of a brain tumour in July 2002 aged 3. The fierce looking deinonchysus owned by Rachel Carter from Haydon Wick was first featured and offered to the highest bidder in the April Link. In a response to a letter from Rachel's father The Link received an offer of £500 from the Blackgang Chine attraction on the Isle of Wight. Les said things moved quickly after he was asked to undergo further tests. "I was then told my bone marrow was compatible and went to London for the marrow to be taken under anaesthetic. It has to be used within 36 hours; all I know is that someone in America had received the transfusion." The trust manages one of the world's largest registers of bone marrow donors and every year thousands of young people with bone marrow diseases like leukaemia reach a stage when only a

Are there 7,094 people willing to support the case for a directly elected mayor?

WORRIED ABOUT DEBT?

Just before the local elections in early May, Swindon Council quietly published a notice that 7,094 people on the register of electors - 5 per cent of Swindon's electorate - is the number required on a petition to call a referendum on whether the council should be run by an executive, led by a directly elected mayor. Fewer than 30 per cent of Swindon's voters turned out at the elections a couple of weeks later, leaving no party able to exert decisive control over Swindon Council. Lack of clear leadership has been identified as contributing to the poor performance record of the council. Past editions of The Link have suggested a politically strong mayor might improve the running of the council. Two years ago, the council carried out a consultation exercise asking for views on options prescribed by central government for administering council business, including the directly elected mayor option. As we explained at the time, the process was flawed because of the way the government determined the choices and the fl acid attempt by Swindon to raise awareness of the issues. At the time community activist Martha Parry wrote in The Link, "the leader of the council is the choice of a party political group. The benefit of directly electing a mayor is that all voters across the

A worship room opened at the temporary medical centre when it moved to the village centre last year. Building work on a Co-op neighbourhood store and six smaller shop units has started and construction of a church linked to an aided primary school is about to commence. The June Link reported on the successful planning permission for the permanent medical centre and building work should start in July.

New classroom at church school on its way Youngsters at Oliver Tomkins Infants School in Toothill have been getting behind a big campaign to raise £12,000 by buying 'bricks' for a new classroom, toilets and cloakroom which will be ready in September. Children and their parents purchased £550 worth of bricks in the first part of June and the school governors were hoping for a big boost at the school fete on 21 June. As a voluntary aided school, the governors have to find ten per cent of the building costs over a five year repayment period. Headteacher Penny Summers said, "we'd like to pay off the loan as quickly as possible so that we can focus on other needs."

From Victoriana to mobiles as head prepares for new North school The headteacher of Swindon's newest school is used to working in small schools in cramped conditions, with a small budget. Having come from the 300 hundred year old East Harptree church school in the Chew Valley, south of Bristol, with four classes, Jane Rodbourn will open Bridlewood School in two mobiles next to the site off Lady Lane in September until the permanent building is completed by Easter 2004. The school was planned for completion at the beginning of the academic year but Swindon's School Organisation Committee could not agree whether it should be built before other planned schools in the area. However, the Government Schools' Adjudicator agreed in February that Bridlewood should go ahead and building

work started in March. Ms Rodbourn acknowledges that she has been set a challenge. "A school very quickly becomes an important focus for a community and my aim is to create a strong feeling for Bridlewood. There has been a lot of uncertainty over the last few months and I know that sending a child to a new school is

a leap of faith for many. But it's very i mportant that the children are not affected by these con-

cerns.

Last October The Link exclusively revealed that former West Swindon pharmacist Ken Schofield was planning to open a branch of his Park Lane pharmacy. Now with permission, builders should start on the vacant plot next to the Phoenix Surgery at Toothill Village Centre in mid-July. Ken said, "the new facility will make up prescriptions and offer a full range of over the counter medical products. We're looking forward to renewing old contacts."

Meetings for minority group Weekly support and social meetings for elderly and disabled people and their carers have been launched at the Link Centre, thanks to a grant from the lottery funded Community Innovators Millenium Awards Scheme. Salas Khan and Syed Naqvi made the bid to trial a nine month pilot project for Swindon's Pakistan Welfare Association. Sixteen boys are appealing for sponsorship to help support their newly formed football team FC Abbey Meads. The boys have already been playing together for two seasons as

part of Blunsdon Football Club and have just had a very good season in the Swindon and District Under 9's league. However, as the majority of the team live in Abbey Meads their parents decided it was time to 'go it alone' and set up a club to represent the expanding northern development area. Chairman Dave Mulley explained. "We held a meeting and unanimously decided we had the dedication of the parents and a strong enough squad to become a successful team in our own right." The club has affiliated to the Wiltshire FA and has joined the newly formed North Wilts and District Minors League. Swan sanctuary benefits from e-book A Swindon e-publisher who got her first publicity when The Link wrote about her in February has produced a new book, this time with help from youngsters who attended her workshop at the Swindon Festival of Literature children's day in early May. I was interested in your story of the air raid on the gas works in 1943. I was eleven years old when I witnessed the raid. Our family were due to catch an early train to Paignton that morning for a holiday. I remember my mother saying the night before that the hooter would probably wake us all up. Well that's what happened. It was decided to wait for the all clear before we set out. I was ready to go, but with noth-

ing to do I went and stood by our front gate. I was looking down Hughes Street towards the gas works when I saw an aircraft flying towards me. I didn't know what type it was because I could only see the front. Then I saw it release its bombs so I ran through the house to the shelter in the back garden. Between the backdoor and the shelter I saw the explosions; needless to say I dived straight into the shelter.

As a young mother with an 8 month old baby I regularly walk through the West Swindon shopping centre and more often than not this will include a trip to Martin the newsagent where the local post office is situated.
