Labour strengthens hold on Swindon seats in Parliament

In keeping with the national mood of support for a Labour government, voters again put their crosses against the Labour candidates for both Swindon Parliamentary seats in the General Election. In North Swindon Michael Wills increased his majority by four per cent in a reduced turnout compared to 1997. In his acceptance speech he said, "I would like to thank the voters who have chosen to trust me with their constituency for another Parliament. "It has been a privilege to represent North Swindon for the last four years and I am honoured that they have chosen me to do so again." Residents at Haydon Court in Haydon Court have helped the Prospect Hospice with its big twenty-first birthday appeal by holding bric-a-brac, book and cake stalls, as well as regular raffles over the last year to raise £354.

A proposal to provide supported accommodation for abandoned young mums and their children is being opposed by people living close to Kiln Park in Toothill who believe it will lead to an increase in noise, drug taking, criminal activity and a drop in house values.

Congratulations to Youngster promotes tennis newspaper publishers A 'tennis for everyone' advertisement in the June Link was a nice surprise for a Westlea family. A team of newshounds at Westlea School have been highly commended for their efforts in producing a newspaper in a day. Joint editors of the Westlea Express, Fleur Perry and Jawad AliShah, attended a reception at the House of Commons on 22 June with year 6 teacher Mandy Sturman to receive a certificate. The Times Education Supplement competition in March required features on local and national topics, plus sports reports. The youngsters created the Express on the school computer network and downloaded photos e-mailed by The Link for inclusion. Abbey Meads church opens doors with first service The congregation at Abbey Meads Church were joined by visitors from other local churches and representatives from Christian denominations in Swindon to dedicate the new building at the village centre on 9 June. It has been designed to provide meeting rooms for community groups, as well as a centre for worship.

Deaconess Maureen Spinks said, the church completes the facilities at the village centre and provides an important focus for spiritual life in the community." Maureen bids farewell to Abbey Meads in August to take up a position in Gloucester.

Freshbrook was still very much a building site and the village centre had yet to be completed when the school was being built. It should have opened in April of that year but delays meant that the first sixty children, under the headship of Marjorie Barker, started classes at Oliver Tomkins School. Running/walking for cancer cash

There was a magnificent turnout for the Race for Life on 10 June when 2,300 women and girls ran, jogged or walked five kilometres through Lydiard Park, in aid of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, nearly 1,000 more than last year. Swindon's Mayor Dave Cox, a keen athlete himself, welcomed the women to the event, and expressed regret that he was not allowed to take part. During his year in office he is supporting the Breast Screening Unit at PMH. Many women had written names of others they wanted to remember on their race numbers. Denise Hofgartner from Freshbrook overcame her fear of crowds to take part. "There was great camaraderie and support amongst the women. No matter what shape they were or level of fitness, taking part for a cause close to all of us was important. It was a very well organised event."

Windmill Hill top in netball and Shaw schools share soccer trophy West Swindon's annual primary schools tournament once again produced eager competition amongst the ten schools taking part. Organised for the second year by the Greendown School PE Department, the round robin tournament produced a hard fought goaless draw in the football final between Brook Field and Salt Way. It was decided to share the trophy. Brook Field were also presented with the school's league cup. Once again Windmill Hill's netball team overpowered all comers in the tournament, and they collected the league cup as well.

West Swindon Library at the Link Centre opened on 23 June after its first redecoration, sixteen years to the day since it opened in 1985. Visitors will note the new exhibition area to the left of the front door, new shelving and the disappearance of the popular book den. A new user friendly children's area will be built later in the year. Principal library manager Kristianne Drake said the refurbishment would make a visit to Swindon's largest library even more interesting. "We're bringing the library into the 21st Century, appealing to all ages and interests. Since it opened all those years ago, the library has evolved to keep up with customer requirements. One of only five such examples in the world, and the only one in the UK, the desk was made by famous Italian cabinet maker Giovanni Socchi around 1830, possibly for Napoleon Bonaparte's sister. Noel Ponting, from Ramleaze, Shaw, was surprised and pleased to see articles and photographs in The Link about a school project linked with his own history. He writes:

Smoking kills one European citizen every minute. Usually the person is a smoker, but in recent years it has been proved beyond doubt that a non-smoker can get the same cancers from breathing 'second-hand smoke'. Gro Harlem Brundtland, World Health Organisation chief, recently called for a ban on smoking in all public places. He said, "Let's be clear about it, second-hand smoke kills!" In May, a court in Australia awarded £169,000 damages to a non-smoking bar worker who contracted throat cancer. No medical expert could be found to deny that it was involuntary exposure to second-hand smoke which had caused her cancer. The insurers spent £8m attempting to deny the link, because they realised that a successful claim would "open the floodgates" to similar claims. Workers whose employers expose them to cigarette smoke are now becoming aware that they will be able to sue should they contract a smoking-related disease. Employers have no legal (not to mention moral) defence if they continue to risk their employees' health in this way. Sainsburys' Bridgemead store, almost alone in this enlightened

age, continues to risk the health of customers and staff by allowing smoking in its restaurant. The store manager, Mr Robin Ireland, is fully aware of all the health risks outlined above - my correspondence with him over the past few years has ensured that. The only reason he can give is that he fears takings might drop if he banned smoking. Sainsburys appear to be placing profit before safety in this matter, and they don't think customers mind. the increasing amount of dog mess left around in Westlea. However, no matter how much the bins are used along the footpaths and green spaces, there are still regular dog walkers who habitually allow their dogs to use every verge and triangle of grass and won't clear the mess up. I am referring in particular to those who think that Westlea Drive between Thornford and Alveston is theirs by right to keep fouling on a daily basis. Please dog owners, clear off or clean up.

My great, great grandfather John Bates was one of the last inhabitants of the village before they were either forced out or had no alternative but to leave - depending on your view of history. John Bates was an interesting character. He claimed to be descended from one of Guy Fawkes' fellow plotters and one of his sons is believed to have been the first person to land a plane in Swindon, on the Polo Ground, I think. It's popularly believed in our family that John was a bit of an agitator against the injustices

WI entertains The Mad Hatter

Freshbrook and Grange Park police officer Rob Mortimer is appealing to people to be vigilant about vandals in school grounds during the holidays.

"Schools across Swindon are being needlessly damaged and are particularly vulnerable during the long summerbreak," said Rob. "It's often bored youngsters causing the problems. Some schools have been graffitied and people getting onto roofs is a major problem. They break tiles which cost £5 a time to replace and rain damage is an extra cost. It means money spent on repairs is not being used on books and equipment." He added that because of the damage caused, schools that used to unofficially allow young people to use the sites to play are now banning them.

Peter and his wife Ro will spend eight weeks in Australia, swapping jobs, houses and cars with Patrick and Sharon Collins from St Anne's, who stayed at the Hilton Hotel by junction 16 several years ago, not realising they one day would be living and working in the adjacent community.

Church planted and growing in Peatmoor Did you know that a new Christian Church has begun in Peatmoor and Sparcells?, asks Clare Camm. SP4SP, 'Sunday People for Sparcells & Peatmoor' has been meeting since May 6 at Peatmoor Community School on the first Sunday of each month. Led by Rev Peter Knight, Vicar of All Saints Church, Lydiard Millicent, SP4SP meets from 4pm to 5 pm to chat over tea & cakes, enjoy arts, crafts, dance & drama activities, discussion and games like table-tennis and pool, ending with a time of coming together, to share in God's love through music, word and drama/dance. All ages are very welcome and a creche is provided.
