World Cup dreams go sour for Freshbrook team A group of angry parents from Freshbrook and Grange Park claim their eager football playing children have been let down by Swindon's daily newspaper, the Evening Advertiser. Shane Sturrock, 10, responded to a call in the Adver for teams to take part in a mini-World Cup tournament during June. He organised friends at Windmill Hill School into 'Windmill United' and sent off their entry form. A few days later they received a letter from Danny Robinson, Football Development Officer at the County Ground Lifestyle Centre, telling them that they had 'qualified for the group stages.' But a

Massive expansion to be discussed in public Government planners say Swindon needs to find space for between 7,000 and 9,000 new homes by the year 2011, in addition to the 10,000 already planned for North Swindon. Another proposal suggests that a further 15,000 should be built in the long term. Where can they all go? Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire County Council, are seeking a 'full and open public debate on ways of tackling the demand. Five sites havebeen identified for possible major expansion. The first option concentrates on development of the existing urban area. Suggested sites are: • Swindon's Front Garden' area (4,000 - 7,000 houses) • The area around Kmgsdown crematorium (4,000 - 8,000) • Between Lydiard Millicent and West Swindon (3,000 - 4,000) The second strategy tries to look beyond 2011 by proposing the development of a major growth area. This would be similar in size to a small new town (around 15,000 houses).

Locations suggested for this option are: • To the South of Wootton Bassett • Between South Marston and Wanborough, east of Swindon. News of Honda's expansion plans on 11 June adds fuel to the debate. A thousand new jobs will be created; more are likely as other firms follow Honda's lead to invest in the town. The benefits of such growth are huge but make the issue of Swindon's need for new homes increasingly urgent. Working Party chairman Cllr Johnson of Wiltshire County Council and Vice Chairman Peter Owen from Swindon Borough Council state, 'there is no easy answer to the problem of how best to ensure Swindon's continued success into

the next Century, but whatever option is finally chosen will be done with full public consultation and involvement. That debate should start now.' As yet, no dates for public meetings have been scheduled in West or North Swindon. Forum for the future There is a chance to see two contrasting aspects of Swindon's expansion on Monday 13 July, after the annual general meeting of the 21st Century Swindon Forum. Marilyn Beale of the Seven Fields Conservation Group will be conducting tours of the Seven Fields Nature Reserve and Penhill Copse. Alternatively, Swindon Council's principal planning officer Martin Trewhella will show people around North Swindon. Both tours start at 7.30pm and are free of charge. The 21st Century Forum is a voluntary organisation, open to anyone with an interest in conservation and the environment. If you are interested in joining the group, the annual meeting starts at 6.30pm in the Haydon Centre. Spokesman Eddie Bedwell said the evening will let people find out more about the planning of a new housing development and also the efforts being made to improve wildlife areas. The tours will return to the Haydon Centre by 9.30pm and will be followed by a social gathering in the bar.

Drop in centre for carers now open Swindon's Focus on Carers and Self Help launched a new drop-in centre for carers at its centre in Morley Street during National Carers Week in June. A carer is someone looking after a partner, relative, friend or neighbour who cannot manage without help because of sickness, age or disability. The family had been touring across Europe for fifteen years before settling in Swindon, where mum and dad John and Pauline Griffiths first met each other. Different members have developed a great variety of skills and the Circus Sardin show includes stilt walking, unicycle, rollerboarding, juggling, acrobatics and fire eating, all accompanied by side splitting clowning around. On 14 June, they took part in the Design-A-Cabaret charity evening at the Hilton Hotel on behalf of Goddard Park primary school which raised £1,300 for a slum school in Nairobi. Snakes and spiders make appearance at nursery Children attending Headstarts nursery were given a close up of some exotics creatures when Martin Murray from Petsmart at Stratton brought along snakes and spiders to see and touch. Martin, who lives in Grange Park, right, showed off tarantulas, Californian king snakes, lizards and giant African snails as part of a project on wild animals. Education minister to meet Hreod anti-bullying team Students who have come up with an innovative way to beat the school bully are to tell Education Minister Estelle Morris how it can be done at a meeting in the House of Commons on 6 July. Five members of CATS - Come & Talk group - will be travelling to Parliament with teachers and Hreod headteacher Andrew Fleet to meet the Minister. Swindon North MP Michael Wills arranged the meeting after the group wrote to him asking for Government help to spread their ideas for supporting each other against bullies by wearing turquoise ribbons.

Painting schools and playing games with young children does not sound that exciting for a 16 year old, unless of course it is in a primitive, isolated, Mexican village. Amy was one of three Ranger Guides from Swindon selected to travel in a group representing the South Western Guide Association. "I was really excited when I heard I could go, although it did not really sink in until the night before I went," she said. Although a percentage of the visit was funded by the Ranger division, Amy had to find the majority by organising fundraising events such as a table top and car boot sale. She received contributions from Highworth Lions and the Swindon Borough Council's W Little Fund. The main aim of the trip in April was to help at a primary school built from money raised by the worldwide guide organisation. "We spent our time painting equipment and also played games like pin the tail on the donkey," said Amy. "The children enjoyed it so much they kept coming back to our group for more." The trip cost less than expected, but Amy and the rest of the group decided to put the excess money towards improving the senior school in the village. During her stay Amy also visited the Sun and Moon Pyramids and attended a traditional folklore ballet. The whole experience has opened her eyes to future possibilities. "If I get the chance I would love to go again. My ambition is to travel the world."

New systems all go After just nine days closure the new library computer system has been installed in libraries in Swindon Borough and is now in use, writes Vicki Moore. All the staff worked really hard whilst libraries were closed training on the system and getting used to the new equipment. West Swindon was the first library in the Borough to go 'live in the new system, which was very exciting but also a difficult time for staff and readers. Thank you to all members of the public for their patience as queries and problems were resolved. The biggest difference for some members of the public is that they are now asked to produce their library card when they wish to carry out any transaction in the library. This may seem inconvenient, but should soon become familiar to all. After all, no-one going to a bank would expect to draw money out without their bank card. It is also safer carrying a library card than something with your name and address on it. Soon there should be public access to the library catalogue for the Borough. This will allow users to see for themselves what is available in any library and whether it is on the shelf. At first though, you may need to ask staff for guidance. Finally, there is to be another big change across the library service.

'What's next?'

t is often said that there are only two kinds of politicians those who fail and those who get out just in time. And that is just what politicians say about themselves. There is a prevailing cynicism about politics that is engrained in our democracy. So, after Labour's first year, it is perhaps not surprising that some are now asking 'is that it?' When I am asked this, I always reply, 'what more could you reasonably have expected from Labour's first year in Government?' A total of £4.5 billion of new money has gone into our spending priorities of health and education, with reforms to raise the quality of provision in both these vital areas. We have launched a £3.50 billion programme to get people off welfare and into work. There has been the biggest ever increase in child benefit, up £2.50 a week, and for the first time, direct help with

childcare. The new working family tax credit will provide for lower income families up to £150 a week for two children, paying 70% of costs. Families earning up to £30,000 a year will benefit from this childcare tax credit. An additional £900 million is being spent to invest in new social housing and repair existing social housing and an additional £380 million is being spent to help pensioners with their winter fuel bills. It looks as if the £20 billion annual deficit Labour inherited from the Conservatives will have been cleared by the year 2000. There has been a radical programme of constitutional reform, returning power to the people, away from Westminster and Whitehall with legislation being brought in on human rights, freedom of information, Regional Development Agencies and Scottish and Welsh devolution. But, of course, there is more still

to do. We were elected for five years and we always knew it would take at least that long to put right all the damage of the previous Conservative governments. So we need to see continuing resources going into our schools and the NHS. And further reforms to ensure that they deliver the highest quality services to everyone, and not just for a privileged few.

In the end, this Government knows it will not be judged by strings of statistics but by the real improvements in the quality of life it achieves for everyone, something that people will not need any help in working out for themselves. They will know from their own lives whether the Government is succeeding. We will be judged by how far we bring about real improvements in education and the health service and all our public services. We will be judged by how far we have managed to remove the blight of social exclusion and change the unacceptable situation in which a child from an unskilled social class is twice as likely to die before the age of 15 as a child with a professional father. We will be judged by how far we have laid the foundations for combining sustainable growth with a fairer society. These are the tasks for the remaining years of the Parliament. Garden society gets ready for annual show

Help for gambling addicts Local newspapers recently carried reports of a man jailed for holding up five Building Societies, 'armed' with a rolled up newspaper. The man was a gambling addict who turned to crime when his family were threatened by people he owed money to. Gamblers Anonymous is keen that people should recognise how serious a problem compulsive gambling can be. They see it as a mental illness that wrecks lives.

Support is available from the group who are urging gamblers to 'reach out for a new life.' If your gambling is creating problems or making you unhappy, you can contact Gamblers Anonymous on 512659 or 0171 384 3040 (24 hours). North Swindon to get pre-school A new pre-school in Abbey Meads, opening in September, is set to ease pressure on waiting lists elsewhere. Abbey Meads parents will welcome the news that Blunsdon Nursery School Abbey Meads will open its doors on 14 September. Pauline Webster, who runs Blunsdon Nursery School believes there is a definite need for a preschool in the area. "We had a very good Ofsted report in April 1997, so we will bring with us excellent grounding and knowledge." There will be four morning sessions per week based at the Community Centre, Elstree Way. They can take part in organised games, arts and crafts and mix with their peers. The schemes, staffed by experienced playworkers, are free. Lincoln's camp closure puts job on the line Single mother, Margaret Denby, from Toothill, fears she may have to give up work because she can no longer send her children to the Link Centre's Holiday Camp. Margaret's two children, Jennifer, 9, and Nathan, 11, right, have attended the camp for the last 5 years, enabling her to continue working through the holidays. Now that the scheme has closed, other childcare options are proving too expensive or too far away. At half term Margaret found a friend to look after her children, though even this involved a £7 taxi fare each evening. Link Centre Manager Alan Richards, although sympathetic to the problems, said, "as part of the council's savings, it was identified that it would be difficult to provide adequate staffing to run the camps." He hopes that the restrictions will be temporary. The Borough's Direct Services Organisation is currently bidding against other providers for all sports and leisure services in Swindon. If they win the contract, they

will be negotiating with the Education Department and other interested parties to re-open the camps as soon as possible. Although they recognise the importance of subsidising the service, they can only do this if the council can fund it.

North Swindon infants to bus until school is ready next year Haydonleigh Primary School is now so overcrowded that North Swindon children as young as four are to be bused to school at Moredon. The planned Abbey Meads school will not be ready until September 1999 but Haydonleigh has not been able to accept any new

children from the development area since 21 May. New pupils who move into the Abbey Meads and St Andrews Ridge catchment area will be allocated places at Moredon Infant or Junior School. Norrie Porter, Swindon Education Officer, said the situation had

The West Swindon Chippers, organised by Alison Deacon from Shaw, hold their inaugural meeting at the Link Centre on 4 July. The scheme is based on an initial allocation of 10 uniquely styled chips, nominally worth around £5 each. Members then 'buy' or 'sell' services using their chips. An hour's work will be worth between 1 and 3 chips, depending on the skill being traded. These might range from baby-sitting or ironing

Church expands Swindon Family Church is branching out with an additional venue at the Pinehurst People's Centre. The church began meeting over five years ago at the Link Centre with just a handful of people. Recently, with more than 200 members, it's been becoming a case of "first come first seated" explained senior pastor Andrew Leakey. Sunday 31 May, the official launch at Pinehurst, saw the People's Centre packed with the 200 existing members and more besides. This was made even more special when almost everyone stayed on after the meeting to share in a picnic lunch outside.

Now the Church will meet at both venues on Sunday mornings, coming together for a big celebration once a month. Church elder Mark Jones leads the new branch at Pinehurst. The Church are delighted with their new venue but retain a vision of one day having their own building, where everyone can meet together on a regular basis. They are still looking for somewhere that will seat between 500 and 1000 and could act as a community facility.

Sixty one house break ins took place and suspects were charged in 83% of the cases. In April 1997, the police only managed a 12% detection rate. However, criminals have targeted Freshbrook in April and May and there were several break-ins during the late evenings and overnight. The police would like to question a white man in his midthirties seen on a bicycle late on 3 June in the Winstanley Road area. The high detection rate is the work of the 16 officer pro-active wing of the Criminal Intelligence Unit which is coordinating information and action against known criminals. Insp Paul Eastham said the work of the unit falls within the 'Keep Wiltshire Safe' strategy. "Detection rates are at an all time high, and they may fall. But our aim is to

identify core criminals and target them so that they stop their illegal activities." Sgt Helen coundrey, who heads up the CIU, also reported a rise in distraction burglaries by criminals posing as bogus officials. There have been ten this year, 4 in early June. She said that householders, particularly the elderly, must always ask for identification from callers before they are admitted. In the first week of June, eight vehicles were broken into in Haydon Wick and good quality sound systems were stolen. The police want to know who is receiving the stolen goods. It's great to have three Last month we talked to Jan and Alan Cotterell from Abbey Meads about their first year with triplets. Here Gina Dennis talks to a family from Shaw with triplets who are getting ready to leave primary school.

Being a triplet is a real advantage so say Katharine, Natasha and Oliver Thompson, 11-year-old triplets from Shaw. "There's somebody to play with all the time," said Natasha. "You can ask questions if you get stuck on homework," added Oliver. Starting at playgroup and then school was so much easier than for most children because they had each other. "They've never had to experience going to anything on their own," commented mum, Linda. Friends tend to be shared and all three are equally happy mixing with boys or girls. Although Linda had been receiving fertility treatment, she was amazed when a scan showed she was six weeks pregnant with 1 ... 2 3 babies (the doctor looked for a fourth). She had just spent the last few weeks heaving boxes around as she and husband Nigel prepared for a move from Newbury to Swindon. Now she was being instructed to 'take it easy' and having to plan for the triplets' arrival. Natasha, Katharine and Oliver were born at PMH by emergency caesarean on the 20 December 1986, nearly two months early. Oliver, the heaviest at 41b 6oz and Natasha

needed help breathing. Katharine, the lightest at 31b Ooz, was the sturdiest and the only one of the three who Linda could hold initially. On Christmas morning, each incubator sported a stocking from which tiny teddies peeped out. "We were brilliantly looked after," said Linda.

Looking back, the early stages were tough. "You have to write off the first three years in terms of yourself." Linda managed to breast feed for six months, expressing milk so others could share the seemingly endless process. She felt continually guilty about not

at work and took off with the triplets to stay with friends in Italy. As often happens with the best laid plans, a bureaucratic breakdown saw Linda without help on arrival at Milan airport. She remembers vividly having to trail up and down the aircraft stairways for each child in turn. Oliver, the strongest at this stage, 'helped' push his sisters in their buggy across the tarmac. When the threesome started school, Linda felt a huge sense of loss. But the children themselves settled easily and have never found it a problem being triplets. Occasionally a teacher refers to them as the 'Troublesome Trio.' Mostly, their peers don't take

much notice - some won't believe that they are triplets. All three thought this would be different if they had been identical. They are now anticipating the move to Bradon Forest School in the Autumn and an increasing 'separateness.' All the children are keen on sport, enjoying football, netball, gym, dancing, swimming and rollerblading. Natasha plays the clarinet and Katharine the recorder, whilst Oliver gained second place in a recent art competition. However, says Linda, "all three have very different personalities and requirements." Katharine appears timid and quiet at first, is slow to get up and untidy, but will do anything for anyone. Natasha is finicky about food, but tidier and more assertive than her sister. Oliver explored the world with enthusiasm and was the first to walk but is very laid back; he was described as 'a bit of a chauvinist' who likes to get his sisters to do things for him: Katharine does, Natasha won't. Linda would be the first to acknowledge the initial difficulties of life with triplets. She relied heavily on support from her family at the pre-school stage. It can also be expensive - three of everything and no hand-me-downs. But she says, "I don't think there was ever a time when we felt 'this is all too much.' You reap your rewards after the first three years." Now, although she knows it sounds gushing, she feels she and Nigel gained "the perfect, readymade family."
