Swindon will be represented at the historic handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China at midnight on 30 June. Morris Mo, chairman of the 300 member Swindon Chinese Community and partner in the HK97 Takeaway at the West Swindon Centre, has travelled to his birthplace to witness the end of British rule in the east. HK 97 partner Tony Tang said the majority of the Swindon Chinese community had relations in Hong Kong, though he and his family settled in Britain over twenty years ago. "We all hope for the best for Hong Kong. We want

it to be just as successful under China as it was with Britain. The busy economy is the door for China to the rest of the world." Sister-in-law Joanne Tang said that history would be made live at the end of June. "We'll all be in front of the TV witnessing the handover." Chairman Mo said he booked his trip over six months ago and will be bearing gifts and greetings to several families and many friends in Hong Kong.

Training for specialists is also being provided so that they can carry out operations in the Ukraine.

On 12 June he returned as the first Mayor of Swindon with his wife Sheila to unveil a plaque commemorating the building of a £1 million extension which provides six extra classrooms, a new hail, kitchens, two libraries, a staff room and storage facilities. Salt Way presently has 362 children. The extension increases Capacity in permanent accommodation to five hundred pupils. Councillor Fanning said the school was

used as a polling station six years ago because it had just opened and there was space available. "1 am very pleased to open the extension to provide places ready for children to come to school." Headteacher Sue Butcher said, "we have been using the building for some months and we are delighted with the light and airy fa-

cilities. With the landscaping complete, there is a wonderful environment in which the children can learn". Salt Way staff used the ceremony as an opportunity to organise a cultural day which included professional poetry readings, magic and puppet shows and a concert by Greendown School musicians.

Open air tribute to Greenmeadow stalwart Members of the Ramblers Association and friends of Mick Whittingham, from Helmsdale, Haydon Wick, who died last year aged 79, came together on 20 June to remember his efforts to improve the environment. A bench was unveiled in his memory at Mouldon Hill, near Woodhall Park, which is being developed as part of the Great Western Community Forest. Phil Claridge, speaking on behalf of the Ramblers Association said, "Mick was a founder of the North Wilts Stile Unit in 1989 which built stiles to give people access to their local countryside. Lydiard Tregoze was the first parish he worked with to open up paths which had been unusable for years. Despite being in his late seventies, he worked a day each week on repairing and building easy-to-use stiles. During his time, he helped put up between 700 and 800. "He was a remarkably enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer and we feel the bench at Mouldon Hill will be a lasting reminder of his work."

School land secured Another battle has been won to protect a field for future school expansion. A scheme last year by Wiltshire County Council to sell the strip of land adjacent to Haydon Leigh School on Westfield Way for commercial development was killed off by planning objections and the transfer of responsibilities to Swindon Council. The area may be needed to expand the school as the northern expansion grows. Now Swindon Council has dug a trench around the site to prevent travellers setting up camp again. One group were evicted in early June and a second left on 15 June, just before a court order came into effect. Local councillor Kelvin King said he was very pleased at the success of the campaign to stop commercial development. "It keeps options open for the school's needs. I was disappointed that the travellers occupied the area, but I hope the trench around the site will prevent them moving in again." • Don't be conned on the doorstep. Story page 30.

Freshbrook Playgroup is NOT going to close. Despite an increase in numbers of children registering for school due to government policies, the Freshbrook Playgroup managing committee are keeping it open. Chairperson Teresa Newcombe is very concerned about rumours circulating in the community: "we have spent a great deal of time and effort to make sure our playgroup continues to be successful and a happy place for children to learn," she said. Future ideas buried Year 5 children from Windmill Hill School contributed drawings for Rover cars of the future to a time capsule buried at the new Beefeater Restaurant off Great Western Way on 5 June. Newly marrieds nearly run out of n juice on way to rec Andy Fowler from Grange Park had to make an embarrassing explanation to bride Jenni Rodham when the fuel warning light started to blink on their way to the reception on 7 June. Andy, a team leader at the EMI compact disc factory, had cleaned, polished and be-ribboned his gas guzzling Jaguar, but forgot to check the fuel situation. The problem was solved when he was able to pull in the Coped Hall garage at Wootton Bassett, dressed in his wedding gear, complete with bride and bridesmaids in hysterics, followed by another ten cars carrying guests. Bemused looks from passers-by turned to smiles as the couple, replenished for the journey, swept onwards to their reception and honeymoon.

Spectacular week of art Freshbrook School's art week at the end of May was a riot of colour,

imagination and learning. The week focused on cultures around the world with each year group producing paintings, models, collages and drama based on study of creation myths from West African, native American, Chinese, ancient Egyptian and Christian societies. Greendown teacher Tim Noble worked with year 6 children on the ancient Egyptian myth of how Apep, god of the underworld, tried to overcome Ra, the sun god, and his father Nun. The Terrace is packed with MPs plotting with journalists. The Lobbies fill and empty as hundreds of Labour MPs shuffle and file patiently past their tellers while a handful of Tories saunter past theirs. After the euphoria of the early days, the House of Commons is settling down to business as usual. The Chamber is suspiciously full on these hot evenings. I wondered why so many MPs were drawn to follow technical and detailed debates on obscure subjects until someone pointed out that it is one of the few places in this stuffy and sweltering palace that has air-conditioning. The first committees have now been set up and the one that is absorbing the attention of most new MPs is the one looking at the procedures of the House of Commons. Most of us feel strongly that we were elected to serve our constituents and cannot understand why the House seems to operate in old-fashioned ways that often seem to preclude us spending as much

time as we would like on this task. Why do we all have to spend quite so much time hanging around until the early hours of the morning to vote when at least some of us could be in our constituencies instead? Why cannot more legislation be more precisely time-tabled to allow us to plan our diaries more than a week in advance? Why are men not allowed to take their jackets off in Standing Committees? The MPs who have already survived one Parliament shake their heads at such naive passion. Most of them visited here when they first arrived. "You don't understand," they now say. "This is

what Westminster is about." A senior official of the House diplomatically explained to me that the cut-and-thrust of debate and the opportunity to cross-examine the other side is what elevates our legislature from those in Europe which are so stupifyingly boring because all the politicians do there is come along and read out prepared speeches. In the House of Commons reading your speech is a sin second in gravity only to clapping (the approved sign of approval is a growled 'hear hear'). "You'll learn," they say as I ask them to sign a petition for reform. At the moment, the new boys and girls are enthusiastically pressing for a new working environment. But, as everything continues to settle down, we'll see if this Parliament will be any different from its predecessors in which any reforms have sidled in apologetically and left a House of Commons which Pitt the Younger and Gladstone and Aneurin Bevan would still recognise as kin to that they so adorned so many years ago.

New mobiles set to hit North Swindon West Swindon library will soon be the base for two new mobile libraries, writes West Swindon librarian Vicki Moore. They will serve areas of Swindon which do not have a library or where residents are unable to reach their nearest service. The vehicles are specially designed to allow those who find steps difficult, as well as giving wheel chair access. Both libraries have friendly, helpful staff willing to help with selecting your choice of items. The range of stock is as wide as any branch library- in fact, the only difference is that the mobile libraries move around more! Thousands make Get Active Day a success ACT/I 4 The Mayor of Swindon Maurice Fanning celebrated his fifty-seventh birthday on 18 June, by visiting groups taking part in Get Active Day. "It was a brilliant day," said coorganiser Nikki Green. "Over 31,000 people took part including elderly people in homes, special schools and local companies and 1,200 people line dancing. Disabled have new way to get around A local pony owner will soon be offering people with disabilities the chance to learn how to drive a pony and trap. Katie Griffin, who is often seen on roads around West Swindon and Lydiard Millicent driving her Shetland ponies, has teamed up with Dauntsey Vale Riding for the Disabled to start a carriage driving group. "The ponies have been tested to work with disabled people and I'm now looking for people with disabilities who would like to learn how to work with them," said Katie. "We have one carriage

which will take a wheelchair; we are also looking for volunteers to fundraise for a second." Disabled drivers need to be over 14 years for insurance purposes, but under 14s can be taken for a ride by arrangement. Helpers to work with the ponies and around the stables can be any age. If you have a disability and would like to learn how to drive a pony carriage, call Katie Griffin on 876600, or Veronica Stubbings on 731131. Bradon Forest School's year 8 five-a-side squad just missed out on the Auto Windscreens Trophy on the hallowed green sward of Wembley Stadium on 26 May. Having travelled to London on the Swindon Town bus, the Bradon team played in town colours against a school wearing the Manchester City strip in the tournament final, before the Division 1 play-off match. Head of PE John Wells said, "we all had a tremendous day, one all involved will never forget. The game was very even and it was unfortunate to lose out in the last 30 seconds. We certainly did Swindon proud and all the staff and spectactors were thrilled with the boys' achievements."

Charles Wong's last visit to Britain was a secondment with the Wiltshire Constabulary between 1992 and 1994, part of which was spent as an inspector covering the West Swindon area. The dire predictions of disorder, crime and corruption in the run-up to handover has not been borne out. "There will be teething problems, it can be expected, and people are concerned about change. But the majority are staying on because Hong Kong will continue to be a dynamic economy." Charles thinks the challenge will be to respond to the competition from Shanghai and also the need to understand China. He says the Chinese officials are extremely well educated, often abroad, and are very able administrators. After leaving Swindon, Charles was promoted to Chief Superintendant and was commander of the Hong Kong police training school before coming to the UK again.

Meeting to hear hospital plans

Age Concern Swindon holds its annual general meeting on Thursday 10 July, 2pm in the Pilgrim Centre, Regents Circus. Speakers from the Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust have been invited to attend to speak about the plans for the new hospital to replace PMH. With a decision on funding expected at the end of June, Age Concern director Jo Osorio sees the meeting as a good opportunity for representatives from some of the 200 older peoples organisations in Swindon to have a say in the planning process. "The chance to hear what is being proposed for the new hospital will be one that many people will not want to miss," he said.

Jensons Outfitters in Gorse Hill are running an exciting drawing and colouring competition aimed at primary school children, with over £250 worth of prizes to be won. The competition is open to children in the Reception class up to Year 6 with a first prize of a £25 voucher and £10 for a runner-up to be won in each year group. Entrants have to colour in a poster provided by jensons, and use their imagination to draw an interesting picture in the space provided. Health Care NHS Trust to be awarded a new qualification being developed for school nurses. Jacqueline Kirwan from Chandos Close will receive a degree in BA (Hons.) in Community Health Studies (School Nursing) at an awards ceremony on 5 July at Reading University. She had to complete a three month academic development programme in order to be accepted on to the course which started in October 1995. In order to achieve the qualification, Jacqueline was released by her employer to complete 55 weeks full time study. The Thamesdown Environmental Forum Agenda 21 holds a public meeting on Monday 21 July to consider the development of the town in the early part of the new century. The Government predicts that millions of new homes have to be built nationwide. The Forum have invited Swindon Borough Council's Chief Planning and Transportation Officer Peter Ellershaw to talk about the implications of building the many thousands of houses destined for Swindon, as proposed by the Wiltshire Structure Plan. The first ever town crier competition will be held in the Burmah Castrol Bowl in Town Gardens on Sunday 15 July at 445pm. You have to be a bit of a character, enjoy being in the public eye and have a clear voice which can be heard from a distance. It's not full time, nor paid, except for expenses. New children's group to give good foundations September sees the launch of Rock Solid, a new club for children in school years 6, 7 and 8. Audrey Hutchinson, below, from volunteers who are planning a proFreshbrook is leading a team of gramme which reflects the concerns of young people such as bullying, friendships, dealing with parents, body changes, coping with peer pressure, exams. "Young people of this age are so important and special," says Audrey. "They are going through many changes in their lives. Pressures from their peers and from commercial interests are enormous. Their confidence is on the edge, their expectations are rising, their behaviour can be unstable.

"Rock Solid will attract children in years 6, 7 and 8, bridging the gap between primary and secondary school. Hopefully we can help maintain primary school relationships which are often broken when children are bussed away to different secondary schools. "Although Rock Solid is church sponsored club, the agenda will definitely be about the young people. It will have a planned programme covering relevant topics which will be delivered through lots of crazy games, activities, small group discussions, occasional outings and weekends away." The projecthas been put together by all West Swindon churches and will be run by a team who are all registered and vetted by Thamesdown Youth for Christ. "This is the most fantastic project there has ever been; I'm really excited to be part of it," said Audrey. "Personally, I feel sure it is what God wants me to do, and I hope parents across West Swindon will feel that this project will support their families."
