This year's Wiltshire Festival on Friday 16 August and Saturday 17 August at Lydiard Park looks set to be the most entertaining yet - with even bigger cannons booked for Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. The Friday night concert will be a real classic with the full Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing a wide selection of favourites, from Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Verdi's Rigoletto and Goodwin 633 Squadron theme. It will end with a last night at the Proms collection, inclusive of cannon and fireworks accompaniment. Proms star Sarah Walker is a soloist, as is tenor Edwin Barnam. On Saturday 17 August, no less than five acts will cover several generations of rock interest over seven hours. Chart hitters Let Loose and Mike Flowers Pop share the bill with exCommunard Jimmy Somerville, 80s legend Big Country and 70s rocker Suzi Quattro. London Marathon in May when she crossed the finishing line with her father Nick from Eastleaze, who was running for the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths. Nick pulled a muscle half way through the run but struggled on trying not to let his family know about it as they followed his progress by criss-crossing London on the tube. But when he appeared, limping, at the top of The Mall, Amy slipped under the barriers and grabbed Nick's hand and said, come on dad, we'll finish together.' Nick, who appealed for support in the March Link, panted 'slow down.' His run raised £2,400 in memory of his infant son Sam who died twelve years ago. Chance to revisit Shaw Tip Five thousand people turned up to plant trees on a cold, wet and very muddy day at the new Shaw Tip country park in February 1995. On Sunday 14 July, 2pm to 4pm, there is a chance to see how the park, being developed by Thamesdown Council, is taking shape. Landscape Architect Matthew Hawkins from the Community Forest team will be taking groups on guided walks around the site which is not expected to fully mature for another 50 years. Some 8,000 trees are now thriving on the tip. Matthew and Countryside Rangers will have drawings to show where various features will appear over the next few

years, and will describe how successful planting is being achieved in difficult conditions. Shaw Tip is to be found on Mead Way, between Hillmead Industrial Estate and the Chinese Experience restaurant. The Great Western Community Forest team is celebrating the planting of one million trees since its launch in 1991. The forest area covers 150 square miles around Swindon. WI urges political action June Bradley writes We've had a busy time since the new committee was formed and we're now well into our current programme. One of our speakers was Mr Vandervelde who gave us a most interesting talk on the Jewish faith. He brought along candlesticks and platters and wearing his yomulka (skullcap) and tallit (prayer shawl), he lit the candles and demonstrated and explained the history and symbolism of the Friday night ritual meal eaten in Jewish homes. He and his family had just returned from their first ever visit to Israel which was a very significant event to them. At our May meeting we discussed the resolutions to go forward to our 1GM meeting at Cardiff in June. The first of these were to urge HM Government to reinstate a realistic living grant to students to enable them to study without getting deeply into debt. Secondly, that we view with grave concern the lack of NHS dentists and we urge the Government to ensure that NHS dental treatment is available to all. The third one was to reinstate the teaching of cookery, nutrition, budgeting and parenting skills to the school curriculum. These all provoked much lively and interesting discussion which made a very entertaining evening. Instead of our usual meeting in June we had a meal followed by a visit to the theatre. The speaker on 17 July will be Miss M Bird telling us about the work of Thamesdown Homeline. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month in the Community Room at Toothill School at 730pm. If you would like to join us we will make sure that you are welcome. If you need more information ring me on 495520.

Chippies cystic fibrosis climb "It was really hard, but we did it," was the verdict of Alan Clarke, manager of the Trawlerman takeaway on his return from completing the three peaks challenge on 22 and 23 June. He and colleague, Darren Brewer, below, both from Toothill, made a 36 hour round trip, climbing Mounts Snowden, Scafell and Ben Nevis whilst they were away. They hope to be able to present £1,000 to Cystic Fibrosis when all the sponsorship is collected.

Cushions to sprout Speeding drivers along Gainsborough Way, Freshbrook are going to be slowed down by the installation of traffic calming humps. Local councillor Phil Rashid has informed The Link that six pairs of 'Berlin cushions' are to be built between the junction at Freshbrook Way and the mini-roundabout on Worsley Road. A similar scheme in Westlea has significantly reduced driver speed.

Drop kerbs and road narrowing 'build outs' opposite Freshbrook School will be installed to help pedestrians. A raised island will be built on the Freshbrook Way junction where driver 'corner cutting' is a major safety hazard.

Andrew does well Andrew Pearson, the apprentice electrician from Haydon Wick featured in the June Link magazine, achieved a creditable fourth place in the national UK Skills Electric Competition. The top six apprentices out of the 2,000 original entrants had to undergo a gruelling four day challenge to wire up a room in front of judges and thousands of visitors at an electrical trades exhibition at the NEC Birmingham between 10 and 14 June. High hopes for bowling season It's all go at Haydon Wick Bowling Club. Over eighty league and friendly matches will be taking place in the club's third full season and members are now travelling further afield for some of their weekend friendly fixtures. All this is in addition to a variety of internal club competitions running throughout the season. Despite all this sporting endeavour the club still finds time to support charities by 'fining' players for petty misdemeanors and organising fun events for Captain's and President's days. Thirteen year old Nicholas Smith walked to Hreod Parkway School and spent the day dressed as a girl on 20 June as part of the school's annual sponsored activities day. Nick contributed £50 to the hoped for target of121,000 which will be distributed between Cancer Research, the RSPCA and CALM, the Cancer and Leukemia Movement for Children. New northern home for newts A rare breed of newt is making way for new houses in the northern development. But they are being found a new home before building can start. Great crested newts have been discovered at a secret location in the northern sector, one of the few sites in Wiltshire. They are being trapped and moved to a new pond where they can carry on what protected species do best - trying to make themselves less endangered.

Doctors decline to sign The delay in the provision of an Abbey Meads GP surgery is set to continue, even though planning permission has been given for a practice to open a temporary facility at the village centre site. The Dr G John and Partners practice has the backing of the Wiltshire Health Authority to relocate its main surgery at Carfax Street in the town centre to Abbey Meads, but says it cannot go ahead with a temporary facility until several important issues are sorted out. A spokesman explained that the practice had been led to believe that it could complete its new building by summer 1997. However, it has now been told the earliest the site could be released would be late summer 1997. In the meantime the practice would be expected to run three surgeries: at Carfax Street, Penhill and Abbey Meads, from its own resources. The extra costs to the practice and inconvenience to patients would continue for longer than is acceptable. High level negotiations between the practice, the Wiltshire Health Authority, Thamesdown Council, and the Haydon Development Company are taking place to find a way forward.

Link goes Olympic this summer The school holidays are less than a month away now, so it's time to start planning your summer with Link Centre in mind, writes Alison Bruce. Link Centre is doing its utmost to organise activities for all age groups, and particularly 5 to 12 year olds. From 29 July to the end of August we're sure you'll find something to get your teeth into and we don't just mean our Link burgers! Lincoln's Summer Camp will provide numerous activities each weekday,9.30am to3.30pm for just £5.60 per day (1.50 Gold Cards). In this Olympic year we'll be including long jump and relay races in the programme. But don't forget places are strictly limited. Registration takes place on Sunday 14 July from 6pm onwards. In the swimming pool, learn to swim or improve your technique. From 29 July to 23 August, excluding Wednesdays, the Link Centre swim school will teach you all the basics in a fun way. Registration starts: Monday 15 July, 10am onwards. Beginners (levels 1 & 2): 9am-9.3Oam Improvers (levels 3 & 4): 930am - 10am. New fitness centre to set the standard The launch of a new fitness centre over the weekend of 20 and 21 July in the town will set a new benchmark for quality and value for money in fitness facilities.

The Swindon Health and Fitness Centre is the first venture into fitness provision for the Swindon based consultancy firm Universal Fitness who have taken over the Swindon Gym in Sheppard Street. They are spending £115,000 to create the towns premier facility. Having assisted dozens of gyms around the country with development, marketing and promotion the company is applying the best practice from around the country to create a relaxing, non-threatening exercise centre aimed at people who exercise regularly, and those who need just a little bit of encouragement to get going. Managing director Phil D'Annunzio accepts the external appearance might not be great, but once inside, people will be amazed by what they find. 'If you've been before, you won't recognise the transformation," he says. "If you have not, then be prepared for something special. Have a go mum would do it again A brave mother-of-four says she would repeat her heroic act if faced with the sa e problem. Debbie Tilley from Freshbrook received a Certificate of Appreciation from Wiltshire's Chief Constable on 31 May in recognition of her courage in confronting a handbag snatcher in December 1994. "I was walking back to West Swindon from the town centre and was following a man who had come out of a pub on Westcott Place," described Debbie. "As I was coming up to the bridge over Tewkesbury Way,! heard this scuffling going on and came across the same man pushing a woman over and taking her bag. He ran away and I was concerned to help the woman who was obviously shaken up. Later I saw the same man rifling through the bag and was able to sneak up on him. I was within a few feet of tackling him when he saw me and legged it."

Good detective work by the police tracked the culprit down and Debbie was later able to pick him out at an identity parade and the man was given a four year sentence. "I don't think it was rash to do what I did," said Debbie. "At the time! was so angry to see the man attacking the woman. And it still makes me angry. Another person would have to decide what they would do in a similar situation, but if more people intervened, then fewer individuals would go around committing crime. "The certificate was a surprise. Lost opportunity for community support An old farmhouse which could have been a Christian support centre serving West Swindon people is now up for sale. The 17th Century Wick Farm, at The Prinnels, Shaw has been renovated to create three properties and is now on the market for a combined total of £425,000. In 1985 Revd. John Flory, former vicar of Lydiard Millicent and team leader for the West Swindon ecumenical church team conceived a project to convert the farmhouse, owned by Thamesdown Council, into a centre for people to go for support in times of family strife and personal difficulties. However the council preferred to sell the property for redevelopment.

John, now vicar of Box, near Corsham, says it is disappointing that the church was not given the opportunity to serve the community in a different way. "A group of local Christians formed the Jaycee Trust in 1988 because we were very concerned about the distress in the community. The economy was booming just before the downturn. West Swindon was still growing and had considerable problems - the number of marriage break-up and levels of abuse and suicide were rising. "Wick Farm could have been

converted. The Trust spent a great deal on feasibility studies, architects plans and preparing proposals. We put in a serious bid to Thamesdown Council, but at the end of 1992 we were told we were unsuccessful. "The successful bidder, if there was one, was not revealed to us. What we saw was a lovely old building boarded up and left to continue to deteriorate. Now we see that commercial considerations have prevailed over care in the community, and aesthetic considerations, which ought be safe in the hands of the local authority."

John visited Swindon in May and passed by Wick Farm, pictured pre-renovation below. The planners had imposed tight restrictions on the upgrading of the farmhouse in keeping with listed building status and he was taken back by the redevelopment. "I am surprised that the council has permitted the destruction of the essential character of the original building which we had been required to preserve." The Jaycee Trust has just been wound up by the Charity Commission and its resources passed on to the Willows Christian counselling service in Swindon.

Planning for Cannes film fest 97 Yona Kazembe works with two others as part of First Break Productions. He has always enjoyed writing, but wanted to be an actor when he was at Churchfields School. "I was told it might be difficult because there are not that many roles for black people; so I decided to write some," said Yona. 'The drama teachers were very supportive and helped me to develop ideas." Yona has had two short videos shown on Swindon Cable, but Dream Inn is his first attempt at creating pictures with words. The First Break trio spent three weeks in May at the world famous Cannes film festival checking out the standard in the short film competition. "I reckon wecan match the quality of what we saw. Now we have to raise the sponsorship to produce a seven minute film."

Kids on the street: the reaction Last month I re-stated the law in relation to the hot chestnut issue of youngsters in conflict with other residents, mainly about ball games,

writes Sgt. Terry Cuss from Westlea Police Station. The reaction broadly falls into two areas. There are those who argue that the law should be used to its full measure against such youngsters and/or their parents. Then there are those who think youngsters are not all bad, that they have little to occupy them and what we (I mean all of us, not just the police) should be doing is to provide some outlet for them and prevent the problems that way. As I have said in the past, there are good and bad examples in both of these views. The police cannot solve the problems alone, anymore than any other agency can. There are positive things that we can do and become involved with. One positive venture is just getting off the ground. It is a plan by West Swindon youth workers,

local parents and children, to provide a dedicated play area or local point of some sort near the Link Centre, providing facilities that local youngsters want. Involvement from the youngsters is of paramount importance. There is no point in providing only what we think they should want. Agencies, companies and councils need to be lobbied and convinced if such projects are to get off the ground. You can help, particularly if you can offer practical skills in construction or building trades, or simply 'brute force' when the time comes. You can also write to your local councillor, supporting the scheme. If you have had cause to complain •about, such a letter may help to ease your problem in the long term.

Youngsters from Westlea School have set out on a two year project to help plan the redevelopment of Princess Margaret Hospital. Year 5 children have visited PMH six times over the last few months as part of a wide ranging consultation exercise. In small groups, the children were given experience of different departments, from admissions, day surgery, accident and emergency. "The children were given a very realistic impression of what it is like to visit the hospital," said class teacher Suzanne Seaton. "They looked at the way people are admitted, what it's like sitting around waiting, they even had lunch on the ward, so that they could make observations from a child's point of view. It was a tremendous experience for them; the PMH staff could not have been more committed to finding out what they think." Karen Russell, PMH ProjectConsultation Director, said it was impossible to redevelop such a major facility without learning the views of the community. "We have been speaking to many interested parties - parents with young children, adolescents, people with disabilities, the Swindon Inter-Faith group, GPs and many others. Mad dogs and Englishmen Lydiard Park Countryside Ranger, Mike Paul-Williams writes

Or should that read, 'mad Englishmen and dogs'? During the past month rangers have picked up several stray animals and have had enquiries after missing pets. It is alarming to find that not all of these dogs were wearing identification tags. Under the 'control of dogs order' owners can be fined up to £5,000 if their canine companion is found not to be wearing an ID tag. An identification tag should display the dog's name and the owner's name and addressor telephone number. If a dog is brought to us, we will normally keep it for half an hour or so, whilst we wait for the dog warden to attend. So if you do lose your dog at Lydiard please report it to the ranger service or the cafe. Please also remember that dogs must be kept under control in public places and are not allowed in the play area or on the sports field. Recent warm weather has finally begun to bring many of our wild flowers into bloom. A recent guided walk to Ringsbury camp took in the wonderful sites of ragged robin, the 'not so' early purple

Great days out for the family Family trips by train are always a lot of fun and Great Western are making it much easier. The alternative is the installation of doggie bins and the erection of signs asking the public to take its litter home and asking dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead (not everyone wants him/her jumping up or sniffing around them). However, if our councillors are not interested then my hopes are not high.
