Rich pickings in Grange Park Police organise 12 July public meeting to beat the burglars Burglaries are on the rise again in Grange Park and Swindon Police want to meet residents to discuss ways of tackling the problem. From 1 January to 28 May there were 56 burglaries in Grange Park. This represents 14% of all reported burglaries in the Police north subdivision, roughly double the expected rate for the area. By comparison, over the same period, the adjacent beat area Freshbrook had 26 reported burglaries, Toothill had 31, and further afield there were 20 in Greenmeadow. All will have caused distress to householders, but many could have been prevented. The public meeting takes place on Wednesday 12 July, 7pm, in the Drama Studio, Greendown Community School, Grange Park.

Explaining the need for the meeting Sgt. Bob Walton, Crime Prevention Officer at Westlea police station, said: "the bad spate of break-ins towards the end of last year ended when an individual was arrested, but the number of burglaries has started to rise again. We need to get on top of this problem, but we need to work closely with residents." He said the meeting will be an opportunity to listen to residents and discuss ways of deterring criminals by improving security, surveillance and developing Neighbourhood Watch schemes. "The problem is general across Grange Park; all householders should be concerned. It's a reasonably well-off area and therefore attractive to those looking for the easy opportunity to break-in.

Escape is easy by car; there are many footpaths through the area and many places to hide. "The majority of the break-ins take place during the day, often on houses where occupants are out at work." Sgt. Walton added that people need to take a good look at security measures to deter burglars. Locks on doors and windows should be improved, garages and garden sheds should be secure at all times. Householders should think about ways of making it look less obvious when the house is empty." Sgt. Walton said the public meeting was not restricted to Grange Park residents. Readers from other areas concerned about crime and property protection are welcome to attend.

Anti-youth crime initiative awaits Government backing Youngsters who hang around the Link Centre have to wait until August to see if facilities available to them will be improved. Home Office civil servants have to give their approval first. The Link reported exclusively last month that councillors on the Wiltshire County youth services committee were to discuss setting up a youth support centre in a vacant office suite on the ground floor at the centre.

The proposal has been developed by a working party of representatives from Thamesdown, Wiltshire, the police and voluntary organisations. But the idea depends on a grant application to a Home Office fund which aims to prevent young people falling into criminal behaviour. Another part of the project is to rebuild two football walls in the floodlit Link Centre coach park. They were vandalised four years ago, pictured left. Football playing outside the centre's library entrance aggravates relations with other users and managers who have to deal with an intimidating atmosphere. The walls were also a public showcase for graffiti art.

Anybody interested is invited to the initial meeting of the New Mechanics Institution Preservation Trust on 20 July, 7pm in the Emlyn Square Community Centre. In 1853 the people of Swindon raised the money to build the now derelict Institute in the town centre, and also a covered market. It housed a theatre, exhibition hall, playhouse, reading rooms and dance hall. Phil is really pleased at how the show has developed. "Jane obviously felt the call of the vampire. She's very eager and works really hard. She is playing a much bigger role than she expected. I think the show is going to be a hit." Phil and Jane performed their first booking at the end of June and have several already lined-up for Halloween. Phil expects to be very busy later in the year as Dr Aculard's show becomes known in the UK club entertainment circuit and at military bases across Europe.

Drivers follow the rules at danger junction A little bit of concrete and a few pints of paint on a road is forcing drivers to behave differently according to a We'stlea road safety campaigner. Thamesdown Council has responded to demands from local people to improve road safety where Rivenhall Road meets Westlea Drive. A two inch raised mound painted white has been laid at the I junction and this has had the desired affect, according to campaigner Phil Rashid who lives closeby. "I've been on at councillors and have written to the traffic department many times over the last two years about the problems," said Phil. "Drivers used to speed along Westlea Drive and then cut the corner into Rivenhall Road. It was really dangerous for other drivers at the T junction and pedestrians. "Now drivers are now slowing down and going round the traffic calming hump; they're taking a lot more care now. It's such a simple

solution, but it has taken a long time to come about." The council is holding consultations on further traffic calming on Westlea Drive at present. Phil also wants to see restrictions imposed on the use of Langstone Way, outside Westlea School.

Call for more Neighbourhood Watch across Westlea A Neighbourhood Watch coordinator in Westlea is calling for more people to step forward and organise schemes in their street. John Maloney from Hadleigh Close, says he wants all the houses in Westlea and Eastleaze to be covered by Neighbourhood Watch. At present twelve schemes cover about 200 homes. But there are about 1,300 houses in the area which are not covered. "Neighbourhood Watch schemes reduce the opportunities for criminals to strike because members are more aware of crime and the need to keep a look out for each other's property," said John. "The schemes means people have to talk to each other and become aware of each other's needs. They help to build community spirit through working together to make

an area safer." He said that that there was a significant rise in reported crimes during 1994 compared to 1993. For example: Burglary from sheds/ garages up from 19 to 38, burglaries from home up from 40 to 83, and theft from motor vehicles up from 34 to 72. "As you can see, burglaries from homes, sheds and garages doubled last year. We can cut these down if people look out for each other," said John. He has been reviewing traffic congestion at the beginning and end of the school day for a report and has been directing vehicles when his duties have allowed. A fond farewell from Moredon A familiar face will soon be missing from Moredon library when supervisor Mrs June Mobey retires at the end of August after 39 years of service. June first started at the Central Library in 1949 and, after a short break spent with her family, moved to Moredon library in 1964 which was then situated above the chapel, opposite what is now the Boundary House pub. The present building in Church Walk North was opened in 1974 and June become the senior library assistant/ supervisor in 1976 where she has worked until this day. Due to the phenomenal amount of changes that June has experienced in her career, in staffing at all levels, buildings and ever progressing technology, June could probably write a book of her own.

Will the crowds return for the summer season? Cinema audiences nationally are down approximately 10-12% since Christmas. Maybe the films being produced are not the sort of entertainment most people want to see. Or perhaps cinema-goers are being more selective in the way they spend their money, writes Corinne Glanville. The prospect of seeing some of the popular major film stars at the MGM in July may woo back the audiences. First Knight stars Sean Connery, Richard Gere and Julia Ormond. In a blend of fantasy and passion, the classic King Arthur story is told from the perspective of Sir Lancelot (Gere). King Arthur (Connery) promises to share Camelot with his bride-to-be Guinevere (Julia Ormond). Circumstances leave Guinevere torn between her deep feelings for the two men. Afurther threat to the beauty and tranquillity of Camelot is the menace of an evil outsider - Malagant (Ben Cross). With 800 extras, 200 horses and 300 suits of full body armour, First Knight has the ingredients to take us to a legendary time when chivalry and honour overcame evil. Batman Forever, released on 14 July, is packed full of villainy with Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent (alias Two Face) and Jim Carrey as the evil Riddler. And criminal shrink Dr Chase Meridan (Nicole Kidman) adds love interest. The great special effects are the work of John Dykstra, who won an Oscar on Star Wars. Message to young street playing footballers and their parents Long evenings, dry weather and I'm sorry to report that Westlea police station is receiving many complaints about children playing football in the street writes Freshbrook beat officer PC Mathias. This practice must cease forthwith. By all means play football but in the appropriate places. In most of West Swindon no house is more than 400 metres from a large play area. But it seems that playing in the street has become the norm whilst the play areas are hardly used. From a policing point of view: 1. It is an offence for any person to play football or any other game on a highway to the annoyance of the user of the highway. The penalty is a fine. Contrary to Section 161 of the Highways Act, 1980. Para 3. 2. It is an offence for any person, without lawful excuse to destroy or damage property belonging to another, intending to destroy or damage such property or being reckless as to whether such property would be destroyed or damaged. The penalty isafine. Contrary to the Criminal Damage Act, 1971. This would include damage to paintwork on cars, damage to flowers in gardens, damage to fences and windows of houses. With the receipt of complaints Police Officers on patrol have been instructed to obtain names and addresses of all children causing problems and forward the details to the Beat Officer responsible for the area. The result will then be a formal report after seeing the child

together with a parent. A formal caution will be given. Any further complaints involving the same child or children will result in official action. There should be no need for any official action. I hope parents will properly advise their children that they should not play in the street bearing their safety in mind. Think how you would feel as the driver of a motor vehicle having just injured or even worse, killed a child playing football in the street? Thamesdown Council tenants should be mindful of their Tenancy Agreement: Nuisance to neighbours. The tenant must ensure that members of his/her household do not cause nuisance or annoyance to other residents. This agreement also covers the playing of games in the street, kicking balls into neighbours gardens, or against other residents' homes and generally making excessive noise in the street. It boils down to the fact that we must all be mindful of other people. What is good for us is not necessarily good for everyone. I'm sorry this article has been a bit of a moan, but it is better that everyone is aware of the position. Lets have a good summer with complaint free, injury free holidays.

Getting ready for the new Ranger Centre at Lydiard Country Park Steve Upton reports

Despite the recent unfriendly weather, the park has still been busy. The rangers are delighted with the number of local schools making use of our education service. The orienteering courses have also been in great demand by youth groups and families. The rangers are always pleased to offer advice to organisers of this type of activity. A new information panel has been installed by the lake observation platform and our new Ranger Centre will open at the end of July, next to the cafe. It will contain a

variety of displays and information to help our visitors gain more enjoyment from our facilities. On 16 July at lOam, a guided walk of local ancient woodlands will begin at the Visitor Centre. It wil be a gentle 6 mile walk which will be led by a ranger, and return to Lydiard at around 3pm. On 30 July we will be walking from Wootton Bassett around Clyffe Pypard, again, commencing at lOam. Further details on both these walks are available from the rangers on 771419.

Meet your local firemen Westlea Fire Station invite Link magazine readers to visit us on Monday 3 July between 7pm and 9pm writes Sub Officer Payne. There will be tours of the station, our appliances, demonstrations, and a chance to meet everyone and ask questions. Refreshments will be on sale. Since my report last month, we have responded to a further 100 incidents, 2 of which proved to be particularly difficult. On 7 June both appliances responded to a reported explosion on an industrial estate in our area. A man had sustained very severe leg injuries and our personnel as-

sisted the scene paramedic, Des Davis from Swindon Ambulance Station, who did a first class job in difficult circumstances. The other incident proved to be somewhat technical. Two lift engineers were trapped beneath a lift which had collapsed during maintenance work. Both men had been working in the lift well when the cable snapped. A discarded scaffold prop in the bottom of the shaft saved the engineers but caused the lift car to twist and jam. The counterweight also crashed down hitting one of them. Working with our colleagues from Swindon and paramedics, the lift was secured from further movement by ropes whilst the trapped men, one with possible spinal injuries, were reassured.

Leading fireman Neil Chamberlain from Westlea cut a small hole in the lift floor using a chainsaw. Props were then passed to the engineers who placed them in position under the lift car. Neil widened the hole and Sub Officer Cohn Hodges from Swindon went down below the car and with guidance from the paramedics assisted the engineers to safety. The Westlea Station personnel look forward to seeing you on Monday 3 July and talking to you about our work and fire safety in general.

The club which meets in the Westlea School community room, is the first of its kind in Swindon and aims to help working parents cope in the early morning. Parents were invited to stay for breakfast on launch day. Single parent and mother of two Patricia Weatherburn said that opening a morning session was a great help. "It was usually a rush each morning to get ourselves organised and into school before 9am. The girls were never very interested in much breakfast. Now I can drop them off and get to work shortly after 8am and avoid the traffic. "The club is really helping us. I feel assured that Katie and Lucy are being cared for on the school site and will be in class on time. Some of my work colleagues are quite envious." Seven year old Katie said she enjoys attending the club in the

morning and now eats more breakfast. After school club playworker Cherry Hobbs said the breakfast club is open between 8am and 9am and can cope with thirty 5 to 11 years olds. The cost is £1 and must be booked in advance. "There is a waiting list for the after school care sessions but there are spaces available at the breakfast club," she said. "We serve cereal and toast most mornings and we have a full large breakfast once a week. The children are able to play games, do some artwork or watch television before going to school Club chairwoman Yvonne Deeley said the breakfast club is being backed financially for one year by the Wiltshire TEC to assist working parents. The after school sessions are supported by Thamesdown Council.

I see my daughter two days a week and take in McDonalds, swimming, the MGM, picnics in the park and have big fun as if we were in Disney Land.
