Bigger & better plans for second Wiltshire Festival It's back. Another August extravaganza of family entertainment is set for three days over the August Bank Holiday weekend at Lydiard Park. The Festival follows the formatof last year's successful event with balloons take-offs in the morning, music for all tastes in the evenings and daytime arena displays and attractions. Over 100,000 people are expected to attend. The internationally-acclaimed Philharmonia Orchestra kicks off the festival on Friday 26 August with a guest appearance by soprano Lesley Garrett. A host of classical favourlies will be enhanced by a dazzling backdrop of fireworks and lasers. Saturday 27 August is a hot Soul Night with the return ofEdwinStarr, with support from Eddie Floyd, Heatwave and the everlasting Gino Washington and theRamJamBand. Smash-hit 80s band Squeeze takes centre stage for a night of rock on Sunday 28 August. The Festival will end on the

Fire crews celebrate 5 years with an all action open day on 31 July Firemen at Westlea Fire Station are getting ready for their first ever open day on 31 July. Celebrating five years as a unit and four years at the fire station on Mead Way, Westlea, the fire crews will be demonstrating fire fighting drills, road accident rescue procedures and showing off their equipment including the new hydraulic platform based at Swindon central fire station. A small house has been built in the grounds which will be fully furnished to show how quickly fire can get out of control and how fire crews deal with emergencies.

Event organiser Sub-Officer Andrew Hargreaves said the open day had a serious theme. "Whilst we're celebrating our five years as a unit, we're not organising a fete. "We want visitors to see how we tackle emergencies, appreciate the danger of fire and increase safety awareness. There will be some spectacular effects to drive the point home. Refreshments will be on sale and any proceeds will be donated to the Fire Service Benevolent Fund.

Youth show off hip-hop to Prince Youth street dance group Stone Youth II based at the West Swindon Young People's Centre at Toothill Farm have a busy month ahead.

The twenty 14 to 22 year olds are their hip-hop street dance skills in off to Germany on 9 July to showoff Swindon's twin-townSalzgitter and will also be performing in Berlin. Jonah's message

Greek studies atToothill School took pupils to Toothill Park for a day of outdoor drama on a hot sunny 23 June. There were ceremonies, sports, soothsayers and other aspects of ancient Greece portrayed by staff and pupils dressed up as warriors, servants, ordinary citizens, slaves and emperors and empresses.

Youngsters at Toothill's Oliver Tomkins junior school were entertained in an assembly by a year 3 and 4 production telling the story of Jonah and the whale. Teacher Ann Ormston said learning the story of how Jonah had turned away from God's instruction before realising his errors had prompted many questions.

Young gymnasts at Toothill School have just achieved their best ever placing in the Wiltshire primary schools floor and vault competition. Competing against seventeen other schools, the A team took seventh place whilst the B team came twelfth. Three pupils had a special mention with Alan Guildford gaining8.8 out of 10 for floorwork, Lucia Palmer scored 8.6 and Julie-Ann

Rathbone scored 8.4 for her box handspring. The school gym club taken by teacher Tessa Dean gives all children the chance to have a go at gymnastics during the year, with a team being selected for extra training before and after school. Ex-pupil Neal Miles, who lives in Toothill, helps the youngsters improve with their box vaulting skills.

Essential local service threatened Another spate of vandalism at Freshbrook Village Centre threatens the survival of the local pharmacy. Severe damage to security grills over windows on 12 June means that they will have to be replaced, increasing insurance costs. Pharmacist Sushma Patel was denied planning permission to put up window protecting solid shutters by Thamesdown Council last year, even though the takeaway around the corner has them. Permission was given for a shutter over the door, but only a grill over the windows. So Sushma uses wooden boards to protect the windows which she has to move every morning and night. These are more ugly than a shutter. However Thamesdown has a policy prohibiting shutters. It's under review, though not soon enough for Sushma. "1 am so angry about this. This is the second time the grills have been damaged. There's graffiti on the brickwork, upstairs windows have been broken and telephone wires have been pulled out. "The vandals try to destroy my business, but the council won't let me protect it adequately. And I'm left with the cost of repairing the damage, plus the utter waste of time trying to sort out the problems." Council deputy leader Sue Bates said the anti-shutter policy is ludicrous. Westlea literacy scheme spreads townwide A project to boost family literacy across Swindon,was officially launched at a reception at the Marriott Hotel on 23 June. Based on pioneering work developedbyWestleaSchoolheadteacher Neil Griffiths, the scheme sponsored by the Evening Advertiser ties inSwindon College, local business and primary schools with the aim of helping parents and children develop reading and writing skills together. Project coordinator Debs Osono, from Swindon College, who lives in Shaw said, "at least 10% of adults have problems with these basic literacy skills which block their potential and cause deep frustration. They are more likely to experience long term unemployed and be dependent on state benefits. And there is a

strong likelihood that their children will underachieve in reading and writing. "By working with parents and children, separately and together, we can help families acquire reading and writing skills and give them the confidence to use them." The Swindon scheme is based around the story sacks developed at WestleaSchool,whichwerefeatured in the February Link magazine. The sacks, made up by volunteer parents, contain books, toys, games and a work sheet, on specific themes which involve the whole family in reading, writing and discussion.

School focus on importance of healthy lifestyle

Children and staff at Shaw Ridge School spent two weeks in June concentrating on healthy lifestyles. Organised by teacher Midge McCormack, children took part in physical and mental activities to stimulate interest in all aspects of health. They had free ice skating lessons at the Link Centre, did circuit training and dance atGreendown school, discussed eating healthy foods with DaveRochford fromAsda and were introduced to the West Swindon library. Parent AnnHutchinson gave a talk on the importance of reducing

stress by following a hobby, using her children's collection of Teddy Bears as an example. Mrs McCormack said the project was a practical application of a 'Health Start' course run by Wiltshire Education Authority. "Research shows that large numbers of children do not get enough exercise and eat a poor diet. It's important to get across the need to exercise, eat healthy food and maintain a hobbies as the children get older."

Shared plans for country park Residents and representatives from canal, cycling, conservation and equestrian interests met officers from Thamesdown Council on 22 June at Brook Field School to talk over ideas for thedevelopment of the new country park on Shaw tip. Following a slide presentation showing the site preparation work already undertaken, those attending took part in small discussions to

put forward the range of activities they would like to see in the park and the facilities needed. Landscape Architect Matthew Hawkins now has the job of bringing together all the suggestions put forward into a comprehensive plan which will be presented to another public meeting on 7 September. He said that those attending enjoyed the chance to contribute ideas.

Volunteers needed to join rescue team The West Swindon based Cotswold Rescue Team is looking for new members. The team is a 'multi-role support group' which assists in prolonged or difficult rescues. It has various specialists in first aid, search and rescue, diving, caving, climbing, waterborne rescue, lifesaving and swan rescue. Building on our gowing OFSTED report Ofsted, the Government'sschoolwatchdogs,have given Greendown their seal of approval. The inspection of 19th to the 22nd of April finds that "Greendown is a good school". "The general quality of learning and, in particular, teaching, are unusually high", and "standards of achievement are generally satisfactory or better". Satisfactory' records

that lessons and work have reached the demanding standards of the Ofsted Framework and Greendown governors, staff, parents and pupils are proud that there are so many positive features to celebrate.

Points for action: "Build on existing strengths" Ofsted identify a number of detailed action points, but note that the school is already acting, or planning to act, on a number of these. The report comments on the greater than usual difference in past GCSE exam performance of boys and girls. The school is addressing this difference, and will continue to work to improve achievement, especially that of a minority of less motivated boys. The issues for action, which the school is required to address, indicate that Greendown is moving in the right directions. We are asked to extend our existing good work in matching targets to individual needs into all areas. On the curriculum, Ofsted want to see the current momentum of planning maintained. Our school budget planning is "outstanding", but we are requested to find ways to assess value for money: we have already responded by building in success criteria and a bidding process to ensure that major purchases are fully justified.

The 17 inspectors visited a fifth of the lessons during the week (a high proportion), and their work was verified on behalf of Ofsted by a senior HMI. The figures they record are amongst the highest in Wiltshire.

We are not complacent about our success, and will continue to monitor for quality, to ensure that Greendown pupils have a high quality education. For next year, we have programmed a range of areas to be checked, and are going to develop the Quality Council, praised by Ofsted, into 'quality teams' to involve all teachers in monitoring for quality.

Standards of achievement related to pupils' abilities were satisfactory or better in 92% of lessons seen, good in 42%. In relation to national norms, 85% of achievements were average or above. GCSE results were in line with the national average.

Over the year, all year 6 pupils in West Swindon's primary schools have visited Greendown's primary science laboratory, set up after requests from the schools.

Pupils from several schools have used Greendown's Resource Centre, using materials, books and technology provided by the Education 2000 project funded by WH Smith. Our bid for further development is being considered by Education 2000.

This year, 82 students have been on working trips to France and Spain, which include conversation practice.

Close involvement with parents and with the community Ofsted found that "parents are well-Informed and involved themselves in the school? The report acknowledges the work of the Parents' Council, whose meetings are always open to all parents and which has been meeting since June 1992. It "meets regularly to discuss both curriculum and whole-school Issues" and has influenced the school's sex education policy. It gives parents a chance to pass on their views about all issues affecting their children - and the school listens and responds. The Ofsted Inspectors also recognise that Greendown "is proud of being Wiltshire's first community school andbeieves the school life Is enriched by involving the community". The school serves the community, and the community in turn makes the school more than just a school. With the introduction of GNVQs and the growth of the Duke of Edinburgh award, we hope to develop our students' work in the community still further.

with colleges are strong and well formed." We are committed to maintaining and improving these strong links to ensure continuity and progression for our students' learning. Our current students working on the City and Guilds Diploma of Vocational Education have already had success in running mini-companies as part of the Young Enterprise scheme, and have made presentations of their work. The report praises quality of teaching, well-structured lessons and high achievement of pupils in vocational education. Existing plans to develop GNVQ "will serve to

broaden and extend the curriculum in the upper school for all students".

Paula remembered A tree to remember Paula Brookes who died of Cystic Fibrosis, was planted in May by her parents and sister Karen with her tutor and tutor group in attendance. Paula's tutor group and other students have raised funds for the charity including contributions from this year's non-uniform 'mufti' days.

simply being a parent oneself is not sufficient qualification for childminding. It requires conscious, planned effort and skill, as well as motivation and training. Childminding also requires support because the the role can share some of the less desirable characteristics of the traditional mothering role, including the isolation which can make mothers of young children vulnerable to stress and the poor status which saps self-esteem. Wiltshire Childminding Association employs five co-ordinators to support and train childminders. I am delighted to say that 14 registered childminders joined the committee at the annual meeting, along with four co-opted specialists. Anybody who would like to know more about the Associationand how to become a childminder can contact me on 876131. National Childminding Week commenced on 11 June with the annual meeting and closed on Friday l7June when 150 minders, their families and contacts came together for a barbecue at Lydiard Park.

The crime pattern across our area has been fairly flat this last month. There has been a significant increase in property stolen from garden sheds and garages in Haydon Wick and Woodhall Park. In at least four of these incidents, garages were unlocked. Please remembertocheck your sheds /garages last thingin the evening. Theonly upward trend in the West this month has been an increase in vehicle break-ins night in Freshbrook I expect you have all followed the recent case of the police officer in Minehead who was in Court for an assault on a 14 year old. I daresay you have your opinions on the case. I certainly don't support violence by anyone. I raise it here because to me an interesting and important sideline arises from it. The parents of the lad involved have understandably jumped to his defence following the comments made about him in the media. Swindon Duke of Edirigburgh's Award Council are holding a promotional camp for all potential and existing D of E award participants and leaders on the weekend of 16 and 17 July at Coate Water. Families get night advice Families with young children in West Swindon now have better access to health visitors following the launch of a night-time telephone advice hot-line service in June.

The six month trial until November means that families with underfives can call a health visitor and receive advice between 5pm and 9amon weekdays and all weekend. Project coordinator Sophie Morris said seven Health Visitors from the West Swindon Health Centre will use a mobile 'phone to give outof-hours advice. "An investigation byacolleague la st year showed there was a need for a service when the Health Centre is closed. "Many families experience problems with feeding and sleeping, or perhaps a minor illness. We will be able to talk over the problem and suggest ways of dealing with it; often parents just need assurance that they are doing the right thing. If the problem is more serious we will confirm the need to call a doctor."

Mates is a new group which hopes to offer support to teenage mums and mums-to-be writes Miriam Minty. Being a young mum can sometimes be quite lonely and whilst there are mother and toddler groups around, there are no specific groups which welcome very young mums. Mates will be a friendly group where young mums and mums-tobe candrop in forcoffee and a chance to chat about what interests them. We hope to have a creche occasionally and sometimes bring in speakers to talk about topics such as choices in labour or how to cope with teething and also those to do with being a young mum such as sleepless nights and how your relationships might change. The group hopes to provide a chance foryoung mums and mumsto-be to meet other people of their

own age in their own local area. The group will be run by Miriam Minty and Pam Pixton who are local community workers. The group will meet at West Swindon Health Centre on Tuesdays between 12 noon and 2pm. This coincides with the baby clinic at the Health Centre so anyone popping in to get their baby weighed or to speak to a Health Visitor can come to the group at the same time. The first session wifi be Tuesday 19 July. As it's the first one we'll be starting earlier, at 11am. Do come along and join us. One result of the better weather and lighter evenings is the greater usage of the local pathways. It is a pleasure to be able to walk around West Swindon on the pathways which take one away from the main roads and rush of noisy traffic. However, with the increased usage of these pathways goes the problem of safety. Cyclists and walkers have equal access to the pathways and this can be potentially dangerous when, lack of thought on the part of one or other, can sometimes cause an accident or a 'near miss'. Some dog owners, walking with pets, have had incidents where their pet has almost been hit by a cyclist not much fun for either the dog or the cyclist. Pedestrians also have been surprised by an oncoming cyclist, or worst still, by one that suddenly appears from behind. The problem, having been recognised on the pathway between

Grange Park and Freshbrook, was resolved by dividing the pathway and clearly marking the cyclist's route. However, this costly bureaucratic answer would not need to be implemented for the rest of West Swindon's pathways if everyone using themshowed consideration forother users. Modern bicycles do not seem to have bells as one of their features and even if fitted are rarely used to make people aware of their presence. Some verbal method of warning could always be used. Similarly pedestrians and dog walkers could keep themselves from harmby keeping to one part of the pathway so that an approaching cyclist can clearly recognise their route. So that everyone can enjoy the pathways around West Swindon let us all be a little more considerate of the other users.

q Gareth Hutchinson with his sister Judith and their collection of teddies Introduced to Teddy Bears by his grandmother, who is an avid arctophile, Gareth has been collecting teddies for almost four years. His collection includes bears by Merrythought, Dormouse Designs, Hermann, Steiff and a very special bear by Deans which has its own 'cello (Gareth also plays the 'cello). Some artist bears also feature in the collection and Mum Ann is particularly fond of bears by the American artist Sue Lain. Judith has a large collection of American bears, called the Muffy Vanderbilt collection. More than a century ago, in Geingen, Germany, a young woman called Marguerite Steiff, who had contracted polio as a child and was confined to a wheelchair, began making childrens clothes and soft toys. She sold these by mail order and in 1880 founded 'The Steiff Felt Toy Co." In November 1902 Theodore Roosevelt took a few days off from political life to go on a bear hunt. The only bear he could find was a bear cub tied to a tree. He refused to shoot the helpless creature and after a famous cartoon by Berryman appeared in the Washington Post, the name Teddy's Bear became popular for soft toy bears. The Steiff Company expanded rapidly and several of Marguerite Steiffs nephews joined the firm, the most famous being Richard Steiff. Between 1903 and 1905 the number of teddies produced annually increased from 12,000 to975,000.These years, known as the Baren Jahre, saw the now famous Steiff "Button in Ear" legally protected by patent. By 1905Steiffemployed 2,000 workers with bears being exported all over the world. In 1908 the Grand Duke of Russia

bought a rare, red Steiff bear for his daughter Princess Xenia Georgievna. During the revolution years the Princess was brought to London by hermother. When her father was killed she remained here and her English nanny made the now well worn bear, a little suit. The bear, Alfonzo, remained with Princess Xenia throughout her life and was auctioned by her family at Christies on the 18th May 1989 for ÂŁ12,100. He now lives in Teddy Bears of Witney,a specialist bear shop, where he looks down on others of his kind who have yet to achieve his fame. The history of Teddy bears and stories of this kind inspire people to start collections and some rapidly become absorbed in this fascinating hobby. Bears by contemporary artists can also be sought out and admired at specialist shows and shops where those involved in the world of bears can share their love of these friendly little creatures.
